Just last night at the restaurant, one of the other waiters and I were discussing how we hate how people think of champagne as just “special occasion” stuff. I pour it on my corn flakes just to make them that much more special.

Best of luck Eric and Amy! I’m not much of a champagne guy (though I’ve probably never had a 95 pointer either), but it was interesting to watch your evaluation. Congrats on the Time article. QOTD – not sure. Maybe one of my coworkers.

Good luck (and congrats) to Eric and Amy…

    Congrats on Time magazine…

QOTD – No one. I’m not a rub it in people’s face kind of guy. But it’s all good.

Good luck Eric and Amy! Let’s get Danica into the world and starting down the path to that day she picks up her first glass in the new, changed world of wine.

Big congratulations on the article GV! I can almost taste it.

QOTD: Carissa M, that lovable gal.

Whoever they are (Eric and Amy) congrats and good luck…having a baby is an awesome thing. Been there times 2 and still love it.

Way to bring the Thunder on a Friday. I’m off to check out the t-shirts. I will definitely be sending the link to my family just to make sure they continue to watch the show. I took home a bottle of the Torre Muga 2003 Rioja and when we all sat down to drink it I made sure we watched your review of it.

    Congrats Gary V.

Waaaay back in 6th grade I liked Peter Frampton before his breakout Comes Alive album hit the charts. He made a splash and look where he’s at now. Side Guitarist in the All Starr Band. Gary no matter how famous you become don’t let it get out of control. No shiny tight pants. Forget the big hair. Don’t loose yourself, man. Keep it simple. Keep it real.

    Love the show.

QOTD: It would have to be Papa Paul in New Jersey. 2005 futures baby!

Nice, I don’t have any champagne on hand but I’m going to pop a sparkling shiraz right now. Not that one need’s a reason but I can think of three, being in the final four, Erik’s impending fatherhood and the validation of the Times article.

QOTD : I’ll spread it around alright but only to bring more into the fold.

So is Erik going to take the little one to Transformers on Tuesday or is a little too soon?

Congrats to Eric and Amy! Great article in Time. QOTD: friends and co-workers.
I know this might be a redundant question since you drink white wine at room temperature….but do you also drink Champagne at room temperature?

Everyday is a day to celebrate! Congrats Gary v!

Mmmm, huge champagne fan. ‘96 vintage is crazy good. Better than any of the ’90s or ’88s I’ve had. Should check out the ‘96 Comtes de Champagne (Taittinger). One of my all time favorites.

QOTD: Not ’til I get the shout-out or the Old World Côte de Nuits episode I’ve been begging for.

QFGV: WHEN WHEN WHEN?? My b-day’s Aug 11th, do I get the shout out then?? Poppin’ a birth-year special bottle o’ wine. If I invite you to the college kid party so you can relive your youth and you get a healthy Vayner-pour, will I get the shout out then?!?!

  22. June 29, 2007

    Shad

Best of luck to Erik and Amy. QOTD: I will actually be sharing this with my wife who rolls her eyes when I get excited talking about wine. Sometimes the changes have to begin in the home. Maybe I’ll finally get her to watch this and the other “sparkling” episodes since that is the only wine she will drink.

Congratulations, Gary! Will the Vaynernation change? For good? For ill? Is this progress? Decline? We’ll all have to stay tuned.

BCWinesArein, I was going to ask the very question you did of Gary–do you also drink your sparkling at room temperature? Must be the air in Vancouver.

And Gary, do know that with this added attention will come a lot more criticism. Thicken your hide, my friend. In the meantime, enjoy your well-deserved attention.

congrats again gary. QOTD: to be honest, i wasn’t going to email anyone. but i have a feeling i’ll be saying “wine librarytv? gary vay-ner-chuk? i’ve been watching him since he was quiet and nervous on camera” a lot. remember us lowly folk when you’re famous.

    Brandon

    Big congrats GV…Time is huge.

QOTD: Okay, a short little story here. In May I found myself in a limousine taking my first tour through the Napa valley tasting wine and generally getting happy. In a very good mood, we rolled into a tasting room at…well…I’ll keep the winery confidential just to protect them…let’s just say it rhymes with Clos du Sal. Anyway, we get this snotty “I know everything there is to know about wine…and you don’t” clerk. Not wanting to let this kill my buz…er…mood, I tried to make small talk. I asked said clerk if she’d ever heard of this wine vlog I watched on the internet called WineLibraryTV. Her response, “I guess I don’t have so much time to waste on some [stupid] internet TV show.” (She didn’t actually say stupid…but given her attitude you didn’t have to read minds know she meant it.)

That being said (thanks for getting that into my vocab GV) who am I going to email with the Time magazine link. That wine snob out at Clos du Val…oops…I mean Sal.

    Big ups GV…

  29. June 29, 2007

qotd: i emailed the story to my dad who likes to make fun of me by asking “how’s your wine guru?”

Yeah the bubbly ain’t for “special occasions” only. IMO life is a special occasion. QOTD pretty much noone because if they have not caught on by now there’s little hope (but I’ll keep trying).

Grats on the Time article!!! You deserve it! You have come along way from that little, quiet, polo shirt wearing, non-yellin’, pussywillow of a man from episode #1.

Huge congratulations to eric and amy, you’re lives are about to change completely, and I mean that in a great way. Big ups on the Time article. You really deserve all the love you’re getting. I mean the store, winelibrary.com, and of course WLTV, you’re obviously very dedicated and have put in a ton of work. I feel excited myself, it’s like i’ve been a part of something special and new. My tastes and knowledge have grown exponentially.

    Gary,
First time I’ve seen you do the bubbly. Never heard of any of those, but will check them out. I usually do Vueve (spelling??).

QOTD: My best bud Dirk got the nod. I’m trying to make him see the power of the force!

  42. June 29, 2007

Great news all around today . . . celebrations are definitely called for. Today is the kind of day you stick hard in your memory so you can quickly recall it the next time you’re down. Positive thoughts going out to Kastners!
I e-mailed everyone in my family the link to the Time magazine article when I woke up this morning, to a few friends too. Super stuff!

  43. June 29, 2007

    amgryger

Congrats to everyone! Not a huge fan of the bubbly either, but I’ll agree with Tom T. that life is a special occaision. I opened a 2000 Marziano Abbona Barbaresco this evening just because it seemed like the right thing to do.

QOTD: Probably won’t gloat to anyone about the article, but I’ll keep doing my part in the wine revolution by making my friends drink amazing wines they’ve never heard.

  44. June 29, 2007

    Larry

Congrats on the Time piece. If the bubbly is an everyday kind of thing why did you wait until today? Wish I could have been there last night – hopefully I will next time. NYC always rocks!

  45. June 29, 2007

    angryphoton

congratulations on the article, great episode as usual.

is it just me but isn’t it a nice coincidence that the “little” champagne in today’s tasting was the winner? just goes to show you

    That transplanted Napa Valley Dude

Hey Brandon, I know the folks at clos du val and they are not the least bit snotty. You were probably acting like an ASS. BTW, I’m drinking their 2004 reserve chardonnay right now and it is awesome!

QOTD: emailed the Time magazine article to a my best friend. I have to confess, though, that for us. . . your NPR interview was much more impressive. We both listen to NPR at least once a day, while Time is what we read when waiting at the dentist’s office. Still, mucho impressive!

  50. June 30, 2007

    Loke Uei

Excellent Article Gary! Keep up the good work!

also, am I too late to suggest that you make a trip to Seattle, WA for a wine get together.

  51. June 30, 2007

    Mike Erdely

Congrats Erik & Amy. Hope all went well.

QOTD: Before I even knew about the Time article, I was singing your praises at the Olney Beer and Wine tonight. Congrats on the article. Great show, as always. Thanks for the knowledge.

  52. June 30, 2007

    Totte

Congrats E & A and you Chuk for the article. Maybe a “Man of the Year” cover soon ?
I just watched the Corvina episode, fun stuff.
Have anyone compared you to Howard Stern yet ?
You are Stern of the wine world. Changing it (the radio) like he did by just beeing yourself.
“Tastes like a fly without the wings”. I dont hear RP saying those things.

I know you love the bubbles so how about an episode on non sugar Champagne, Non dosage.
I love the Andre Clouet NV Silver Brut Nature and think its a lot better than the A.C. Grand Reserve NV.

Big up for all the great work.

Great episode – grats on the Time magazine article.

Never been a huge fan of champagne (am I the only one?), but maybe that’s because I haven’t had a really good one.

    YoungDave

CONGRATS ERIC and AMY!!! All the best to bringing Danika into this world.

QOTD: I’m saying “I told you so” to everyone in my Producing for TV class that were skepptical when I submitted my idea for a potential documentary of the current U.S. wine industry with a host by the name of Gray Vaynerchuk. T explained that this guy had a huge following and would be great for this potential dicumentary and had the personality to carry the audience through an in-depth look at the current wine industry; from commercial to small, handcrafted producers. Congrats on the press, and I need to pick me up a copy of TIME to read what I already know about you and the show that I’ve been watcing daily for about a year!

Wow! SF glass with celebratory champagne!

Silly Gary, I can think of AT LEAST two other episodes where you announced that champagne was your beverage of choice.

I’ve already emailed most of my friends, but now that you mention it, I’m gonna track down the email addy of the most snobbish little wine place I’ve ever found. But what I’d REALLY like to do is completely fill the inboxes of every last person associated with Sideways. Not out of malice or anything; just for fun. The only problem is that, as I think of people whose noses I’d like to rub in that article, I’m becoming a little bit snobbish myself. So I’ll have to watch it.

  58. June 30, 2007

    Raffi

Congrats to Eric and Amy. Kids are great, I have 4 and they are a great reason to open up a bottle…especially after they’ve gone to bed.

Gary, you deserve it. I’m sure the wine snobs watch you too…they just don’t admit it.

Great line..”kick’s Dom in the nuts”…classic.

  59. June 30, 2007

    Justmarsh

Congrats GV! I think we’re all proud of you buddy. Real soon will be the one year anniversary of me watching WLTV, so it’s pretty cool to see you get all this great press.

I love Joel Stein’s articles in Time and I’m so glad he did this one. He seems like a pretty funny guy or at least his writing is that way. The longer you watch this show, the more you realize that you are just plain honest with your reviews. Sales are good, but I think we all know you just tell it as it is.

Thanks again for all the help this year!

First of all Congratulations Eric and Amy on your new addition.

I am a Champagne Guy (though I’ve never had a 95 pointer) I’m a J.Roget kind of guy. It’s always EXCITING to watch your evaluations.

Congrats on the Time article. Way to goooooooooo!

QOTD: I would have to agree with Shad, The wife rolls her eyes when I get excited about your episodes. Sometimes the changes have to begin in the home.
I finally got her to watch some of your episodes. And she’s finally starting to get into it, now if I can only get her off the candy wine..

How come so much swirling of the champagne?? I know the show is all about breaking the rules, but the whole point is to keep the bubbles in tact… why not just shake up the bottle beforehand??

  65. June 30, 2007

    Congratulations on the TIME article!

    QOTD: My wife.

  66. June 30, 2007

Agree that Champagne and sparkling wines are not drunk enough. Should we swirl sparkling wines at home or is that just a WLTV thing? I will tell my friends at our wine tasting this afternoon that they continue to miss out by not watching. Congrats on the publicity and the fun shows.

  73. June 30, 2007

    Jim H.

You know Gary, I have a tough time sucking air into my mouth and doing all of the gyrations that I normally do when tasting still wines. I feel the bubbles get in the way. I have to practice that more.

Congratulations all around. You deserve it!

    Cheers.

    Gary,
Congrats on the Time Mag. interview/article. It’s nice to be noticed and appreciated for the hard work. The issue of the wine bully is brilliant. Great Champagne… enjoy it for me. I had a bottle Adriano Adami Prosseco “Garbel” and Terral Sole Brunnello di Montacino 2001last night. Very nice truly enjoyed them both. Getting more into Italian wines. Re-discovered areas such as Campagnia, Alto Adige, Sardinia, and Puglia. These regions are starting to produce great handcrafted wines at reasonable prices!

Summer time backyard wiffle ball where you had to clear the clothes line to knock it out in right, you knew the smell of the inside cuz those skinny yellow bats always busted open after a couple of days hard playing – thanks for the memories.

Time magazine article was very flattering, good for you. Someday I’ll be able to say “oh yeah, me and gary go WAY back.” You know, the ol’ I-had-the-t-shirt-before-it-was-trendy thing.

Like I told you in SF, I hope ya make a $100M bucks! :-)

Great news all around! Erik & Amy, all the best to you and to Danika. Gary, way to go… well deserved! I’ve been celebrating this weekend, too—had a belated b-day last night; we drank ‘66 & ‘70 Chateau Figeac (one of each—!), ‘84 Clos du Bois Marlstone (a meritage-type blend, pre-meritage labeling). Outrageous!

I noticed that you twirl champagne around which is a NO-NO, you are killing the bubbles by doing that.

I’m with you on champagne — it’s my “desert island” wine too. (How will we keep it chilled, tho?) Thanks for the episode; I’m looking forward to your “values” tasting as well.

Many congrats on the Time Mag article. Awesome!

Actually KVine, prestige cuvee champagne should always be drunk out of a tulip shaped white wine glass, like a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc glass. The smaller champagne flutes do not allow for the better aromatics to be released from the wine and regular Champagne flutes are designed to focus the wine on a different part of your palate when you sip it. I learned this while tasting with Dom Perignon Chef de Cave Richard Geoffrey and Didier Depond of Champagne Salon. They insisted that no true champagne connoisseur would ever serve his high end bubbly in a so-called champagne flute, or, even more atrocious, a champagne coup (champagne saucer ).

Ara, I’m sorry to correct you, but you are not killing the bubbles by swirling the champagne. While some CO2 may be released from solution by swirling, it is very little and has no detrimental effect on the taste or effervescence of the wine. Just as in any other wine, swirling helps to coat the inside of the glass with a thin layer of the wine, which in turn evaporates, and helps to release the aromas. Don’t let anyone tell you not to swirl your champagne. Some champagne drinkers do, some don’t. Just the same, some sommeliers will insist that you do not ever smell champagne as you would with any other wine. I personally think that is rubbish and myself and all of my sommelier associates always swirl and sniff all of our champagnes. The aroma and bouquet of a fine prestige cuvee is half of the enjoyment.

Congrats on the new little one! I have always found champagnes and sweet wines the most difficult ones for me to analyze…nice job on these…have to try the Femme soon. Again, congrats Gary on the Times article…I already heard people talking about it in non-wine circles…you are reaching new heights of fame and influence!

Congratulations to Eric and Amy!!! I agree about champagnes/sparkling wines. always try to get my friends to drink them with lobster (especially baked stuffed or grilled). couple of friends i’ve turned onto the site have e-mailed or called to tell me about the article. gotta love it.

wow – I came to the site because of the Time article and am thrilled to have found you! You rock!! I am a HUGE champagne fan and it too would be my desert island take-along. Gary- Been out all week so I am catching up on all the episodes. CONRATULATIONS on the Time Mag score. I was sitting on a plane reading it and I about jumped out of my seat… like yeah, yeah this guy rocks! Great job!

Champagne is a favorite of mine too. Actually we were just discussing what we should serve for our Grand Opening party – any suggestions that will bring the thunder without breaking the bank?

Oh, and Gary – thanks again for helping us change the wine world!

Hey Gary, congrats on the Time article! That’s totally cool! I’m playing open mic at my friends wine bar on Mon, and I’ll get a pic of me wearing the wristband as I rock out on my vintage classical axe. Keep up the great work. We ARE changing the wine world!

Hey Gary! I learned about your website today though the article in Time magazine! Well.. congratulations.
I am not much of a wine person as, some how wine hits me harder than any ‘hard liquor’. Nonetheless, I do appreciate a good glass of wine. Many a times I am surprised how good a $6 Rioja or Riesling, can be!
I do enjoy your style and it can get people hooked to wine!
    Cheers… Salut…

    Tasting request:
Just re-watched episode 201 for the Avaton tasting. How about trying the Parparoussis Nemea Reserve 2003? Can’t find anything out abut this one except good producer in a good year. 44 bucks makes it a hard one to consider without some input.

Hi Gary, I heard about your show a few weeks ago on grape radio and I have been listening to a lot of old episodes. Love the show, talking about wine without being stuffy makes me happy. I hope everything goes well for Amy and Eric and congratulations on the Time magazine story!

Congrats on the Time article! Loved this episode, as I love champagne and sparkling wine. I have tried most of the other Duval Leroy stuff, but never the Femme; I’ll have to check it out. I had a fabulous ‘96 Billecart Salmon after my son came home from the hospital. Try that sometime, or better yet, taste it on another celebratory episode.

QOTD: Fast forward — can’t wait to share some wine and champagne with my son when he turns 21 or so. He’s 1 now, so I have a while…

Great show, Congrats. on the Time.I was paying attention to the bubbles today and noticed that the Heidsieck lost its bubbles much faster than the other two and thought that it was interesting that you said that its flavor also disappeared like a ghost. Good luck man. People discovered you and Time noticed that.Be well.

Congrats to you Amy and Eric! I have two kids of my own and love them very much. You are in for a wild and wonderful ride. Congrats to you Gary on the Time article. Champagne is indeed in order!

QOTD: I am not a rub-it-in-your-face kind of guy, but I have been spreading the good word about Wine Library and the show. I genuinely dig what you are up to, that is, shattering the mystique that wine appreciation is reserved for a privileged class. Kudos.

Congrats again Gary! I like how the boy from Belarus had a little cry with his folks over the article. I’m sure I’d do the same if I ever had a page devoted to me in Time, and now I’d know to crack open a bottle of Femme! Hope to hear from you soon.

Awesome blog. Just saw your article in Time – oddly enough the only one I read. Isn’t Femme pronounced “Fem”…not “Femaaay.” Been a while since I spoke French, but that one was easy enough to remember.

What a wonderful time for Eric and Amy, giving birth is truly a miracle and it changes your outlook on life forever..of course in a fabulous way!!! I bought a bottle of Michael Martini when my son was born, he produces it so when your child is 21 its able to be opened! Great celebration when that happens!!! I have been watching for a while, and am just catching up on some episodes i’ve missed, but this is my first comment. No more lurking for me.

Seen how you brought up the iPhone, are there any plans to to publish a video version of your show that I can watch on my iPhone? It would be great to be able to watch your show on the go, so I don’t get so far behind. Thanks, GV.

Congrats to you, Eric and Amy. Enjoy and love this new stage in your life. Yum… the Duval sounds like being trapped in a bakery at 4 am. Thats a good thing, and so is kicking that (in my opinion) overpriced Dom in the nuts. QOTD: I dont have a lot of friends who are really into wine, so sadly sending them a link would fall on blind eyes….. Fools. Little to they know what we have in store for them.
