    GV,
Have not tried a Carmenere but will have to. Sounds like a decent value.
Kahuna, you are a techno-philistine. Welcome to the 21st Century. Bad move on selling Apple by the way. Should split soon and will be around 100 again in another year or so. Never underestimate Steve Jobs, or GV for that matter.
QOTD: I would wait in line for 3 1/2 hours in 88 degrees with 90 % humidity; but it was worth it: iPhone ROCKS!!!

Chile, yup, I like that country – Spain, (normally) my favourite – Chile, yup, I like that country.

iPhone, hmm, not sure my company will go for it.

    Gary,

Feeling the pain as you announce that you’ll go anywhere…in the United States. Ouch! And a day after Canada Day, no less. Think you’re funny by freezing out the Canadians, eh?

No need for the i-Phone as I’d be too lazy and/or stupid to learn how to operate it, and my wife would take it from me anyway.

Carmenere is a great grape. Thanks for the show.

Big G at it again. I was wondering about the Montes Syrah. Nice job covering that.
I’m going to throw out a Big Shout Out on Los Angeles being your next City to visit. I know you were here not to long ago, but it is the Entertainment capital of the world and your shows are bringing some great entertainment as well as valuable information. Ya know what I mean? Ya fell me? LOL
QOTD. For one of them there Iphones I would buy you a drink my friend. : )

Interesting on the Montes Alpha, definitely makes me curious to try it out. I think I’ll add it to the next tasting.

QOTD: Not pay $500, and not use a carrier I disagree with on moral grounds. But I do look forward to the next generation it inspires,.

What would I do for an iPhone? Not much. I drop my phone on the ground from fairly significant heights at least 2 or 3 times a day. An iPhone would be trashed in about a week.

  32. July 2, 2007

    dmhoro

Taste some mourvedre wines please!!! I just tried this grape for the first time and it’s great. I looked for a WLTV episode on mourvedre and didn’t find anything. Some Sonoma County wines would be quacktastic…Cline Cellars maybe?

    Thanks!

  33. July 2, 2007

    Matty Matt

Fake sour flavor? Like sour patch kids. Given your love of candy surprised you didnt go there.

Had a great time Thursday night and Kahnua’s being a bit salty today.

  34. July 2, 2007

    Madrone

G, have you ever considered adding the retail price of the wines in an episode in the box labled “Wines tasted in this episode”? That would add something to the “quick” view of the vlog page

QOTD – not interested in iPhones. I make and take about three calls a week and that’s it. Don’t need a new gadget at all.

  35. July 2, 2007

qotd- i will tell you what i wont do like wait in line 4 hrs in the heat like i saw people do the other day near times square – clown shoes. other than that buisness fun show today wish it was longer so we all could see some other value wines, but i guess with all the newer viewers its kind of risky to put out a 25-30 min show huh? keep up the good work!!

LOVE your show…it is truly important work you (and your production team) are doing. Wine needs this.

p.s. bring up the iris a bit for me…this ep. was dark (fitting for the carmenere)

    QOTD: Absolutely nothing.

QOTD: Nothing. I’ll wait to see what Palm and RIM have to offer in the coming year or so.

Gary – though the JETS won’t play in Indy this year unless there’s a playoff game, you’re always invited (along with other Vayniacs in the vicinity) to my place for good wine and debate. You must be football fans, however!

Gary, Wow! In Time! I hope all this national publicity won’t make you too big for your britches. ;) (to quote my Grandma)
Congratulations to you and your family!

QOD: Nothing. AT&T service isn’t available where I live.

QOTD: I’d root for the Jets for one week especially if they are playing Tom Brady, the wuss.

Good show and congrats on the TIME article.

    Cheers!

P.S. The Fort Ross Chard was a big hit this past weekend. Verrrry nice bottle of wine.

  47. July 2, 2007

    TimInFL

Man…I fall into the category of really liking the Montes Alpha…The Syrah was always a good goto wine when I couldn’t figure out what to buy. But…Now that I am now a seasoned Vayniac…I just buy something that makes sense. Win Some Lose some….Kind of like gambling on 40 yr Old Pitchers…I just happen to have 3 on my Fantasy Team….Ouch!

  48. July 2, 2007

    Elliot Essman

An iPhone? What would I do with that? For the same money, I can buy several cases of wine.

Tech is a tool. When it facilitates dissemination of ideas, as with WLTV, it is laudable. In itself, however, it means nothing.

Tech brings along both value and novelty. Best not to confuse the two.

  49. July 2, 2007

    Sean

There isn’t much I wouldn’t do for and iPhone, probably wouldn’t trade my 23 year old bottle of pappy van winkle.

  50. July 2, 2007

    SoCal

QOTD: I would rather buy more wine :)

  51. July 2, 2007

    wildebeest

    Yay! SF glass!

Gary, I went out and bought the June 25 issue of TIME, but I can’t find you in it. Am I blind, or did I get the wrong issue??

QOTD: My opinion of the iPhone is mixed. In a way, I’m indebted to the thing for supporting my family (my step-dad worked on some of its patents), but I’m not really very eager to own one. Of all the cell phones out there, it’s really the only one I’d want, but I’m not a big fan of cell phones in general. In fact, for now, I’d rather not have a cell phone at all. So, in short, I wouldn’t do much of anything for an iPhone.

  52. July 2, 2007

    caleb

qotd-absolutely nothing. waiting for prices to drop and potential glitches to be fixed…already heard the OS-x system drains the hell out the battery. Money better spent on wine, just like so cal and others said!

  53. July 2, 2007

    Larry

Cool show and hope to get ou to the Wine Library on the 5th.

    QOTD: nothing at all

    i’ll stick to my blackberry.

  56. July 2, 2007

    Matty B

QOTD: save money for it. What do I want out of a phone? Long battery life and a great signal worldwide. I’ve gotten pretty close… so I won’t be switching just yet. Maybe if some amazing third-party apps come out for it…

  57. July 2, 2007

    wine lush

QOTD: I’d buy wine instead. I’ll buy it when the upgraded model comes out and they’ve worked out the bugs and it’s on special from ATT for $150.00.

  58. July 2, 2007

    half century

right on Kahuna! people are sheep.
I second the shout out to Mike and Sue, Thursday was FAB
hey Gary how about a white Rioja EP?

  59. July 2, 2007

    E

What am I going to do with an iPhone? I can get a case of good Bordeaux for that! Actually, I can get a case of cheap Bordeaux too, probably, and I love me some cheap Bordeaux. And by the time it worked for VZW anyway, everyone would have one, it’d cost $50 and the Bordeaux would be ready to go.

Speaking of which, there’s an idea: great under-$20 Bordeaux. Can’t never have enough of that. Maybe even the white kind.

  60. July 2, 2007

    JC

QOTD; I’d destroy it in no time, maybe if I was a suit … Happy Independence Day!

  61. July 2, 2007

    Bossman

QOTD: an about face and march out the door, the latest trends and fads do little for me. I’m not one of the “me too” crowd, I’m still using a portable cd player every day. All I own is an iDONTREALLYCARE attitude for Apple stuff in general, the world is already too dumbed down and I find pandering to the lowest common denominator insulting and condescending.

Of course, my outlook doesn’t force me to make value judgements on others either, everyone’s experience is different and everyone has something different to float their boat, I don’t judge nor care to be judged.

(P.S. – I THINK I’M TURNING INTO KAHUNA WITH TACT!!!!!!!!!!!)

  62. July 2, 2007

    Wave

Is it just me or is Kahuna just a little out of line? Bi-polar perhaps. YO GV!!!! That clown is dissing you.Ban his ass!!! He probably makes these posts from his blackberry!!! Or maybe he thinks he is the OAK MONSTER!!!! And he is tired of being picked on! qod.I will wait for the iphone2

  63. July 2, 2007

    mbannon

Good episode Gary – what happened to the lighting, though?

Hey, when are you going to taste Virginia wines? White Hall Vineyards has been rocking the house the last few years.

    QOD – Don’t want one.

  64. July 2, 2007

    mas

Have been looking for a good example of Carmenere – will seek that out, thanks.

QOTD: nothing. Keep ‘em. I’ll pick one up for free next year as part of some new offer from ATT, T-Mobile, etc.

hot chocolate & a few squished lightning bugs on your hand… I sense a t-shirt design

  67. July 2, 2007

    GlassRunnethEmpty

QOTD: What would I do for an iPhone. Um, laugh at the people who clamoring for it since these same features have been available for years. Apple just seemed to market it. Have fun…..today’s toy is yesterday’s technology.

  68. July 2, 2007

    G In RIC

Interesting episode. I have definitely looking for a few more value wines from areas of I have not explored before.

QOTD: I would sign a two year phone plan and at most pay $100. I would defenitely say that the iphone is a modern masterpiece of technology and design. But I don’t have much use for using the internet on my phone or listening to itunes on my phone. At least not enough for that much money.

I am sourounded by computers and technology most of the day. The few minutes I am away from it is precious, I don’t want emails and viral videos interputing that. But maybe that is me.

  69. July 2, 2007

    Cameron P

Another great show. You’re a lucky bastard getting an iPhone. Some good themes lately, though I’d really like to see another obscure varietal/region show (it seems you haven’t done one in a while). Perhaps Valle d’Aosta or Jura? Seems like they have good values coming out of them lately.

Also, you’re correct, Flight of the Conchords is awesome. The best is when Jemaine sings “Can someone please remove these cutleries from my knees.” You should have them guest on the show and do a New Zealand tasting:)

  70. July 2, 2007

    aktormedic

QOTD: I would love to buy one at 95% off on the secondary market when people discover that they suck…and if you drop it once it will shatter…and that they are stuck with 100 dollars a month for 2 years…..and that the battery life is approximately 22 minutes!!!

  71. July 2, 2007

    TROC

I’ve got to keep reminding myself that a value is not a value if you don’t enjoy the wine. Usally an extra 5 bucks is well worth it. When you do find one like the Babich SB, its like hitting the lottery. Thanks for that pick.

  72. July 2, 2007

    CNW

I’ve had the Montes and the Silva and hands down the Silva beats the crap out of the Montes.

Gary, You NEED to come to Virginia and do a show. I already told you… I’ll hook you and the wife up with great spa packages on the house. Please pretty please….it would be fun! Besides, you love to give your adoring fans new and interesting things to try, right?

QOTD: Well, my husband and I want iphones pretty badly BUT I am waiting till the next generation so all the bugs are worked out and some of the hype goes away. In the meantime, I will just be green of all those who have them!

  73. July 2, 2007

WHOA — Lightning bugs! Man, does that take me back to my childhood in New Jersey. I’ve never seen even one here in SoCal. Thanks for that, Gar’.

QOTD — What would I do for an iPhone? Not too much, for some of the reasons given in this link: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/hughes/14081

Here’s my QOTD: Who stood in line for how long to get you yours?!

    Bill V.

  77. July 2, 2007

    amgryger

I appreciate the value wine because a huge component of my personal wine culture is drinking it with meals on regular basis and decent value wine serves this purpose well.

The only time I tried a carmenere it was thin and tannic. Maybe I’ll try a different producers of it one of these days.

QOTD: I’d say thank you if they gave me one.

  78. July 2, 2007

    CampingLisaB

QOTD: I am not a big fan of the iphone…however…I’ll take your old phone since it needs a home!

I actually have that Montes Alpha Syrah 2004 and opened it this morning to drink tonight. I like it… I would however like to try the first one..

Great to see you in TIME Gary!

Good episode we’re all in search of the value..QOTD Not very much,It’s all I can do at this point in my life to keep up with Myspace, cork’d, watching all the episodes, and my daily comments . I love the show and some may say the iphone would simplify these afore mentioned task. But right now it seems like tech overload for a computer illiterate like myself..I’m just settling into computers at home I need a little while before I take one with me..Keep up the good work.Later

  81. July 2, 2007

    TimF

I was just catching lightning bugs with my son the other night.

    What happens in 58 days?

QOTD: Um, yeah, I’m not really into the whole “cellphone” thing. I don’t think it’s going to catch on.

  88. July 2, 2007

    Capt M

Cool episode. First two wines have a beautiful color. QOTD: Absolutely nothing. Not interested. I love Apple, and I Looooove technology, but I believe that the iPhone is the ultimate ’status symbol”, so much so, that it’s ‘irregularly’ insane to throw in another $600 besides the other cool gadgets that we are ‘obliged’ to have (the iPod included). I don’t have a Nintendo Wii, nooo.. I was even more stupid and bought PS3, and I’m almost sorry that I did. Should have toned down my stupidity level and settle for a Wii. But with iPhone, it’s not happening to me (again), nosiree!

  89. July 2, 2007

    SteveW

QOTD: I-Phone is OVERRATED, I Give it a major Pazzzzzzzzzz with 10 Z’s.
It has a terrible QPR, I would rather spend the money on wine.

  90. July 2, 2007

    Jen

QOTD: Are you offering me one? ‘Cause I originally poo-pooed the idea, but if someone was going to hand me one for free, I’d say, hey, that’s neat! Let’s see, so if you said you’d give me one for free, AND you’d pay off Sprint for my early termination fee, AND you’d give me a year of free service INCLUDING unlimited texts and internet… I’d do a full out video of my “Vayniac” contest entry, all the verses, and include the scene [from Flashdance] where she pulls on the cord and the water dumps on her, but instead of water, of course, I’d use wine. That’s what I wanted to do originally, but couldn’t make it happen in time… but I would, for that iPhone.

  91. July 2, 2007

    wirelesswine

QOTD: Absolutely nothing. I appreciate how well Apple can hype a product, but form factor aside, most other devices are already ahead of it.

GV- your other phone is 10X better. But you may remember that I’m biased!

  92. July 2, 2007

    mikeyrad

QOTD: enter a contest maybe, but certainly wouldn’t pay for one yet. Congrats to Gary for the Time article, and of course to the Kastners for their new bundle of joy.

“Smells like your hand after catching fireflies” – Come on Gary, can you try to think of something original for once. What wine doesn’t that apply to.

QOTD – Probably wait until the next generation.

My .02; I hate how people let brand names define who they are.

Just a BEAUTIFUL episode, Gary. BEAUTIFULLY executed, BEAUTIFULLY shot and the audio was BEAUTIFULLY functioning.

Seriously though, glad to be part of the VanyiacNation. It’s a beautiful thing.

QOTD: I’ll pay the $1,000 an unlocked iphone is going to cost here in Mexico whenever they figure out how to unlock it! And no, I wouldn’t wait at least 6 months until out third world cellphone companies decide to bring it over locked to their networks… I love Apple but Apple Mexico sucks!

It’s so cool to see coverage on wines we can actually get here in Mexico. I’ll try the Montes Alpha for sure, and I hope I can get a hold of the Los Lingues. For good chilean, I’d love to see you taste Don Melchor from Concha y Toro, it’s an excellent Cabernet. And of course Mexican wines! PLEASE!! There’s some very interesting stuff down here!

GV, love the three wine format, keep it up. It’s good for the short attention span that me and my fellow ‘Nintendo Generation’ peeps share.

QOD: I will not buy an iPhone. I do not want an iPhone. However, I see the iPhone as a step in the right direction for the future. It packs a lot of features for communication and multimedia into one slim device. Honestly, I think we need a major leap forward in battery technology before ANY of these devices can really do what we want them to do ALL of the time. We also need a faster, cheaper, and more widely distributed network to run these devices on. We need to be on one network, THE network, and that network does not yet exist. We need to be interconnected on a personal level and not limited by whatever corporation we favor at the moment. This product is a good start, but it’s only a starting point. There will be much better and even more intuitive and innovative products in the not so distant future. So, I will not run backwards through a cornfield naked for an iPhone, ever.

I’ve been meaning to grab a wine from chile! I will definitely seek out a Carmenere. It’s funny how my taste in wine has changed so dramatically from when I first started to actually TASTE wine and learn about it to now. I would’ve been all over that syrah because it’s familiar. Now I find myself going instead for the things I haven’t ever tried. I noticed you mentioned something about decanting the 1st wine for an hour or two. Did you not decant that one??? Or did you just mean, after your taste of it, that it would NEED that decanting (which you’ve done) to appeal to a larger number of people?

QOTD: meh, I don’t think I’d do anything to crazy for an iPhone. Not something I’d buy for myself however, getting one for free doesn’t sound to bad lol. Seems like it’s overpriced and overhyped.

  105. July 3, 2007

QotD: I’d say, “Hey Gary, gimme your iPhone.”

Seriously, I’d do some silly stuff maybe, but nothing crazy. Not really that interested, I’m still using the free phone Sprint gave me.

Looks like Chili beat Spain today. Too bad, because I really enjoy a nice Tempranillo. The Montes Alpha Syrah sounds good and I’d like to try a Carmenere.

QOTD: If I had an iPhone I’d get some glasses for it. In reality, I’d have to get a part time job to pay for the phone and the service plan.

  110. July 3, 2007

    Orion Slayer

I meant to ask if you’d tried the Crios de Susana Balbo 2004 Mendoza Syrah-Bonarda blend. I read about this wine and it seemed like it would be a delicious blend. Not a QPR at $17, but a nice fruit bomb waiting to explode on your palate.

Gary, I like the price range you are tasting in. I am always on the look-out for that gem in the $10-$20 range and wines you don’t find at the local supermarket. Thanks.

QOTD: Not much I would do for an iPhone. It is kind of like a Ferrari. Sure it would be cool to have but, I couldn’t afford to keep it. Rather spend the $ for the service on wine :)

  124. July 3, 2007

    J Crazy

Mad props killin that second wine. I had the same reaction when I had it. How do “they” give those type of scores to such crappidy crap.

QOTD: Yo, I’d go back to how Japan was a few years ago. Then I’d buy a phone and I’d still have cooler stuff like GPS aided Navi walker which lets me see a 3D map of where I am and how I can get to my destination (cost added to original price but still not 6 bills) and unlimited SMS text messages. Then I’d connect to the internet, email everyone, check out the forums at WLTV, listen to my iPod (apple does make some good stuff) until I get to my destination, then I’d use the money I saved not buying an iPhone (we can fast forward to the present) and buy a bottle, some appetizers, and have a great night with my lady. I’d also stop using parenthetical phrases.
C’mon, talkin about value. Instead of buying a new phone, GV, you need to buy an airplane ticket to Japan so I can show you how good the Dai gin jyou can be. Then we’ll finish off with some Wagyu beef and wine. Or sushi and white. It’s your choice…just don’t buy another iPhone.

can a vayniac backslide into lurkerdom by going 4 or 5 months without commenting?? If so, I fear the backslide and I’m just saying “hi”! I never miss an episode but I listen (i-pod) rather than watch these days so I’m never in the comment section. After listening to the marathon today – and all that great Jersey traffic racket in the background I knew I owed you a comment.
Kahuna – nothing’s changed! You may well be bi-polar but I agree with your first i-phone comment – you nailed it.
GV – TIME?! You truly have created a revolution. Right on. People are trying different things, tossing out preconceived ideas and getting LESS scared about trusting their own palates and standing up to the wine-bully.
And finally, I think the Oak Monster’s gang (which I believe you said showed up with him on today’s Spanish wine) would maybe be his Oak Minions?

I wouldn’t want an Iphone for one big reason. ATT. They suck, just got rid of them last year after 2 years of nightmare non-service and trying to use an internet browser on ATT is like a 14k modem.

I’ll tell you what I did for an iPhone — I waited in line for 10 hours on Friday so I could be one of the first to get my hands on one. No its not a crackberry but for those of us who just want a beautifully simple device that plays music, makes calls, checks email and surfs its perfect. And i can already type faster on it than I could with my Treo. If you don’t like it don’t buy one… You don’t see us trolling websites all day long bashing crackberries. :)

Lightening bugs!!! Enjoyable show as always.

Now don’t go throwing quarters at people.

And for all those people who hate the iPhone already. Think about it, you could be carrying with you everywhere you go, the entire library of Wine Library TV podcasts with you. It would be handy shopping for wine when you can’t remember which wine smelled like lightening bugs and hot chocolate.

Good show. I almost bought a Carmenere recently, but for some reason didn’t. However, I just received a case of goodies from WL today including a bottle of Summers Charbono. Ever since I heard about that rare grape, I have wanted to try it. Can’t wait to crack it open. I put my own value case together looking at all of the 90+ ratings on WL and picking out no single bottle of wine more than $17. I chose one wine that I have tasted and enjoyed in the past, but 10 out of the 12 bottles were wines I’ve never had, so looking forward to the new experiences.

QOTD: My son is a Mac Genius for Apple so as you can imagine, I’ve been hearing about the iPhone constantly. He is lucky because Uncle Steve (Jobs) is giving every permanent employee of Apple and every part timer who has been there more than a year an 8 GB iPhone this month. He has given us the dog and pony show and I will have to say, it is an impressive device. However, it’s a little too rich for my blood and I don’t like the fact that it is only on the AT&T network. Besides, I love, love, love my Treo and don’t see any reason to walk away from it right now.

Cool epidose…first time to hear about Carmenere and looking forward to try some.
QOTD. iPOD! I actually I had one (nano) and I hated it because of the silly ear phones that never fits well!! Oh yeah, I might have to pay another 40$ for a decent ear phones, not to mention about the little protective rubber casing for the ipod that cost additional 30-40$..! So I actually gave my iPOD away to a friend, for free.
    cheers,

I am a HUGE fan of Carmenere! I have been touting its abilities since I learned of them a few years ago. it is a great grape (one of the original Bordeaux grapes I believe) and totally rocks.

Haven’t had the wine GV tried, but if you want a cool grape to get into, Carmenere is the way to go. Calina Reserva is one of my favorites, and Alcanca (from Calina) is also great, and both are 8-15 US$.

Cheers GV, and kudos on the Time article.

Too bad the Tempranillo was such a disappointment. Have you had the Casa Don Juan Tempranillo? This is another Spanish Tempranillo under $10. I though it was pretty good, but I’m curious what other people think. (I think the stuff I had was 2003.)

I found Carmenere years ago while trying to figure out what wine was. I particularly like to match it with lamb. The best I have had to date was a gift from a friend, 2004 Misiones de Rengo Reserve, unfortunately it can’t be found in the states – unless you want to start importing it. I happened to have picked up a few bottles of Casa Silva a few days ago, now I am even more excited about trying them.

QOTD: What would I do for an iPhone? Wait until rev. 2 or rev. 3 to get one. The EDGE network is slow, you can’t tether it and use it as a modem and there are a few other limitations that I hope get worked out first.

Good episode, Gary. You got your philosophy across (and without yelling or getting all hyper) plus you threw out a rule that I totally agree with (two-case max). Some of the wines you liked and some you didn’t; they were reasonably priced, plus it’s short too. I think all of that make it a great episode.

I’m not saying that every episode should be like that (I like the wacky concept episodes, the marathon episodes and the straightforward themed episodes too), but I this is a great one for me to send to my friends as an introduction.

Oh yeah, come to Charleston, SC. I can’t guarantee a grand party but I’d have fun.

Just going through the archives GV for Tempranillo & Carmenere. I love searching out these sub $15 wines from Spain, Chile and Argentina. Great stuff.

I finally got on the iPhone bandwagon this past week. I’m only 2+ years late! Just got a 3G-S. Digging it. I decided to wait for the prices to come down a bit. $200 was more palatable for me.
