man I feel like I was on the loosing team at half time and the coach just gave us one those speeches that make you want to go out and KILL the other team. I AM PUMPED! :)

In fact, every wine I have now is something different. And being a newby is part of that, but also rev. GaryV. :) The last time I had the same bottle of wine was to share something with friends and family I had at a tasting.

Great rant, classic WLTV moment. I do buy off-the-shelf cases, though. What's the point of finding a value wine if you don't actually buy some of it to have around and enjoy while feeling good about how little you paid for it?

QOTD: No way I'm BUYING 365 wines in a year, but I'll try as many as I can get my hands on. I frequent three different local wine stores just to get in on three times as many free tastings.
  • Adrian aka AnGkEr
What a rant.....wow....brilliant and fantastic. GV at his best......
QOTD: If I have the bones...you bet...
  • Dessert Wine Nerd
Wow.... Thats a rant that ranks above any of Dennis Millers, because he pre-wrote them head of time. That one was straight from, the hip/heart and full of passion. Gary kicking ass and taking names, perhaps? That brings me to the QOTD: I would really like to, and will do my best, but even buying cheap bottles of wine I cant afford to go 365 in one year. One day my wine dreams will come.......
  • Withnail
Awesome! Perhaps some good did come from your hiatus.
  • Kevin W.
That rant was awesome. It kind of reminded me of old school WWF. When the wrestlers would have their short interviews/rants. All GV needed to say was ohhhhh yeahhhhh!, and you would have Randy the Macho Man Savage. Once again awesome rant, and if I could afford it I would try 365 wines in a year. GV you are great.
  • Todd Smith
Wheh... that was awesome! Awesome rant! Amen! Ya'll better be listenen.
  • Awesome episode, thanks for linking it up on twitter. Have the badge on my site. Usually I can't afford to try a wine every day but I just spent the holidays at home and my dad and I went through quite a few. It's so much fun being a total noob and figuring out what I like and don't like.
  • Kristen
Way to go GV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was a super cool episode and even better because it was on my birthday!!! I'm totally down with trying new wines and there is nothing better to me than spreading the Wine Gospel (WG anyone?) and seeing repeat customers buy NEW things...and then come back and say, "hey, that was really good!" Or recommending someone to try a glass of the Albarino instead of that Riesling or Chard! Thanks for this ep, it was really great!
  • Rico
    yeah yaaaa!!!!!!!!!
    lets change the wine world!!!!!!!!
  • Daniel Rymer
QOTD: Even at $10/bottle average, that's a $3650 investment. Do the free tastings from a plastic thimble cup at total wine count? :) If so, I'm there GV!

Side note, I hope the upgrades you're doing to corkd don't cause me to lose the huge list of wines in my shopping list. I can't wait for the weather to cool down some (it's been 100F+ the last few weeks) so I can ship some new flavas my way.
  • Nick H
What a great show, How great is it to see you try a style or wine region that you have talked up and not be let down, Definitly will seek out the Sauv and Chard.

An emotional end to the show, Brilliant. How can I get one of those wristbands

    Nick from NZ
  • QOD: Only way I'm trying that many wines is if you plan more wine tastings for your Vayniac nation otherwise I simply can't get through that many wines by my lonesome
  • mcj
QOTD: 365 is a bit steep, but I definitely plan on ordering some WL cases once it's not so @#$# hot out this way :-)
  • Reverb
Hey I have recently got into wine tasting and wanted to try the Vino Casablanca Nimbus Estate Sauvignon Blanc, but can't find it anywhere. I live in Eastern lower Michigan, around Detroit and can't seem to find this anywhere. I love close to Whole Food, World Market, and Trader Joes, but I can't get it at either place. Any other suggestions on where I might be able to find this thunder wine?
  • LT
I just bought the Nimbus Estate last night...unaware you had reviewed it a short 2 weeks ago, but am now excited to try it. I am, however, a little sad that you paid $10 and I paid $12.
  • OMG! That was without a doubt, hands down the coolest rant/inspirational speech I've ever seen/heard in my life.

Seriously, you're new motto should be: "We're mad as hell, and we're not gonna take it anymore!"
  • gary,

i'm a poor college student that would love to try 365 bottles of wine in 365 days. the thing is, I'M A POOR COLLEGE STUDENT. if i come to your shop, what can ya do for a brotha? are there free tastings anywhere? should i use part of my financial aid on wine? help!
  • Neil D
    Oh . . . my . . . god.

That was epic, you were giving me the chills there Gary.

We all should scream at the top of our lungs like that. There is a lot wrong in the world, and we should all go out there and teach people what we know and love. Gary, I admire you because you're out there, screaming, telling people what's wrong (in the nicest way possible), and I will DEFINITELY do everything in my power to try as many wines as I possibly can.
  • DanM
Catching up on episodes and boy was this a good one. Thanks Gary.

Did anyone else feel like the episode was a snowball rolling down a hill. More volume as it went along and at the end it crashed into the ski chalet?

    Back to catching up...
  • Jeff
Did you bump your forehead on the inside of my monitor? I was afraid you were going to jump out and choke me! QOTD: Yes sir!!!
  • JayZee
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Greatest WLTV rant EVER! I loved every minute of it. Keep up the crusade, Gary. The wine world needs you - and so do we!
  • J Crazy
Rock and Roll. You CRUSHED it on that one, homie.
I read a lot and I read a lot. All information is valuable but not if you don't back it up with your own opinion and the only way to have your own opinion on wine is to drink it. Like I always say, "Wine is meant to be drunk."..."I am meant to be drunk" is another less popular saying of mine, but hey.

Tasting groups, wine seminar, tasting events, etc. are great ways to economically tastes through 100s of 100s of wines each year. Attending tastings or even hosting tastins is a great way to try through well over 50 wines every month. If you're hard core and do the tastings and have a few bottles a week you could even push the 100 mark, per month. It's much easier in big cities...but start a tasting group. Mos Def.
  • damon aka unknownwine
holy crap. When I first got into wine I read alot and felt bad that I didn't taste all the things the writers did. now I just taste a lot of wine. I'm probably more in the 100-150 range of wines tasted per year. Its helped alot and its a hell of a lot of fun.
  • Pat Mc
Great show. But to add to Elliot E's points - sometimes you just need a familiar bottle of wine to be your "comfort food" - when you've had a bad day and you just don't need a crappy bottle of wine. My husband was just in the hospital for a week and when I came home at night, I kept opening bottles until I went to an old WL favorite that I knew would hit the spot. Oh and on the main WL site - way to go with that Cellar Defender feature. Perfect!!!!!
  • Denise
Good grief, Gary!!! What an episode to come back to!! I'm not sure if I should say, "Fan-freakin'-TASTtic!!!" or "calm down, man" (...this I say to the guy that suggested to me many episodes ago "maybe it's time to lay off the wine just a little, Denise!")

You are amazing. You ARE the man, Gary!!

    Denise

    P.S. Your haircut looks a little too polished...I like "rough-and-tumble Gary" better. : )
  • E-Rock
That was epic bro! I'm up to the challenge....
  • Gary.. Are you still in NY?
  • MannyPants
    Awesome
  • That sounded a lot like the Friday after work drinks really kicked in. I am almost certain that Gary pulled out the karaoke machine and busted a move after that.

I agree with Elliot Essman regarding reliable wines. 80% of wines I buy are new however for the reasons Elliot mentioned it is great to have wines that you know and like.
  • BW
Woo Hoo ! GV's on fire!
Wish I would have been around this weekend to post earlier.
To pile on to your point, I think you need to not only try lots of wines but
you have to try lots of GOOD wines. I mean, if you have never had a 95+ point
wine, how can you even conceptualize the experience of a truely fine wine ?
Not that you can afford to drink it every day, but you have to have that as a bookend
so mentally place the relative quality of other wines you are drinking. Once you can
do that, you can have your own personal rating & QPR & whn you taste something,
you will know if it is worth it's price to you & you will know where it's deficiencies lie.
  • Jim Dabbs
    Gary...brother...you are NUTS! And I love it.....bring the thunder bro....great episode.....love what you're doin'....keep it up....peace
  • Juan
Terrific show, one of the best I've seen when it comes to passion about wine.-
Chilean wines? I'm not suprised with your reviews.- I've tried them all and almost agree 100 percent.- The Cousiño Macul should not deserve more than 80.-
365 wines? The important thing here is the message, try, try and try again
  • CollegeFootballisNumberOne
    GV-
Was that a little "shoulder"? Did you just give "the shoulder" to the 2005 Santa Carolina Reserva? Go ahead, review the tape, it's there.
  • Jen Loves Wine
Amen, brother -- 365 wines -- I am right there with you!! Also, I love Merlot and am sad to see it's demise recently with a lot of vineyards -- so see what you can do about that Gary!!
  • YOU are good.
    No you are...
    No YOU are.
  • ScoTT
Holy Crap GV, that was the best rant EVER! You said exactly what I have thought for years. Keep up ranting and raving...you are changing the wine world.

Yes, Cork'd does blow a big one. I hope WL can change it....good luck on that, they will need it.
  • Metal Dave
    Nice rant.

    I love rants.

Read the rant on the back of the "Double Bastard" beer from Rogue in California. One of the best ever.
  • Dusty
bring it on Gary! i love the passion. damn, i wanna go wrestle an alligator or something right now that rant got me so fired up. WOOO! Gotta love Gary V and WLTV.
  • Christopher T
    1. Thank you for the up close of your chest hair along with the label of the Santa Carolina, that was a nice touch.

    2. As a DPGS (Dirt Poor Grad Student) I'd like to see some really cheap wines ($7-8?) which, although not at all awesome, could at least be enjoyed. That's the only way some of us DPGS's and CKC's are going to get anywhere near 365 wines a year.
