I agree with ktw, what a week of WLTV.

That was the best rant I have seen yet, talking about bringing the thunder. This will get my Digg (My #1)..

Before the weekend is over I will find a wine I have never had before and give it a try!

That was a classic episode – Gary you’re on a roll this week man!

QOTD: I’ve had around 50 different wines since starting watching this show, nearly 3 months ago – including gewürztraminer, insolia, arneis, douro wines, blaufrankisch, zinfandel (rare over here), lots of SB, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, malbecs, carmenères, CDR, chenin blanc, syrah & shiraz, all sorts of funky blends (The Wolftrap!), Priorat, Penedes, Cigales, nero d’avola and Pouilly Fumé. Before, my wife and me were drinking cab sauv, merlot and chardonnay 80-90% of the time.

Though I won’t pledge myself to 365 (it’s still alcohol, as fun as it is let’s not overdo it), I do plan to keep up my new habit of trying different things. Currently in the cabinet: mixed 16-bottle case incl. viognier, French malbec, primitivo, etc. Plans after that? Maybe 1-2 bottles extra of what I really liked of what I bought until now, but definitely another 15-bottle mixed case. Got some wild stuff lined up for that one in fact, getting really enthusiastic just thinking about it – grüner veltliner, 4 rieslings from different places incl. a ‘cordon cut’ from Clare Valley, some fantastic IGT wines, petite sirah, etna rosso, torrontes, etc.

See, now you got ME all pumped up as well!

P.S. Wine is not just broken in America…

Gary, LOVED the rant at the end! You were pumped, and now so am I. My stock is very low from last weekend’s tasting at the beach, so it’s time to head out to WL. :-)

    I loved Press Your Luck.

Wow, an unprecedented rant. I’m scared right now.

    QOTD: No problem.

I think I tried 365 last year, and it was a fine year indeed. I shall do the same this year, and every year hence.

Forgot to mention, QOTD: I accept the challenge.

Gary, Great rave at the end of the episode. I whole heartedly agree. Taste, Taste, Taste. Taste the good stuff. Taste the bad stuff. If someone opens a bottle and says it’s corked, I say: “Let me try”. Not all corked wines smell the same and I want to know when and in what way a wine is bad not just good. Sometimes it’s not bad, just interesting…

Second thought: I read a few comments here that say something like “Whoa, drink a bottle of wine a day”. Gary, said “Try 365 wines”, not “finish the bottle”. A friend of mine who is a winemaker regularly has several open bottles on the counter. Some get finished, some for cooking, others get dumped.

Lastly, Another friend of mine in the wine biz once told me, one of the things he loves about wine is “That you could have a different wine every day for the rest of your life and never have the same thing twice, what else in life offers that breadth of experience”. I’m pumped.

I’m with you Gary. Bought 2 mixed cases from different stores in the past 2 weeks. Included reds from Austria and Bulgaria just to try them. With wine tastings I will definitely try 365 wines per year. Have some wine and chill out on the weekend.

QOTD: This is is one of the benefits of actually working in the biz. I will take that challenge absolutely. Could you possibly recommend some supplements? I have for awhile now felt a loss of energy, perhaps occasional lethargia. And yet you Mr. G-Man seem to have all the energy in the world. I’ll take what your sniffing. Bill-O watch out G-Man’s comin’.

Umm…it’s impossible for me to try 365 bottles a year. I’ve been trying to try 182 bottles a year!:)

    Definitely pumped after todays show!
    Great motivational speech!
I like to compare the wine world to the Internet…. Everyone started with AOL and are slowly living without it and trying new services.
Like wise; everyone starts out with Yellow Tail, but someday they will be able to live without it too and refine their palettes faster and be more diverse in their tastings.
Your video blogs definitely help us out!

    Just a thought :)

    365 bottles a year? What’s wrong with 500?

Leaving second comment/question. That officially takes me out of “lurker” status, as far as I’m concerned. What’s the restaurant in NYC w/ the #1 wine program? Thanks.

YOU BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE AT THE END. I FELT LIKE THE INDIAN IN THE POLUTION COMERCIAL. TIME BEFORE LAST IN YOUR STORE I BOUGHT 32 BOTTLES–NOT ONE THE SAME. IT’S GREAT FUN OPENING SOMETHING DIFFERENT-LIKE OPENING A PRESENT. LAST TIME IN THE STORE I BOUGHT A BOTTLE OF THE ONES I LIKED AND A BUNCH OF NEW ONES TO START OVER AGAIN.

    Great episope

I am not a Chilian wine fan, but I did like your comments on the Sauvignon Blanc. I love SB very almost any where in the world, so I plan to look for this one. Just don’t push SB to much so the rest of the world find out how good it is and the rices start to go up.

My wife and I taste at least 365 wine a year. Usually we drink about 4 bottles a week at home or with friends. We are also very lucky that here in Denver there is a locate wine store that puts on a wine tasting 10 time a year for about $25 and distributors have about 120 wine open to taste. We also go out to California for the Russian River Barrel Tasting weekend in the begining of March. So my wife and I are very open to tasting many different wines.

JW – It’s “Press Your Luck” and in one of the earlier WLTV episodes there was a whole string of comments on it, there’s actually quite a large cult following. One of these days I’m going to find the HD that has the PC version I wrote to teach myself Quickbasic back in the 80’s, graphics necessarily will pale in comparison to today’s but it functioned just like the game show (unlike the original I don’t know if anyone can detect a pattern as I don’t recall how far I went in randomizing the lit squares). Tomarkennite!

Man, that question really got you going? Trying to average one bottle a day, yet not losing my ´job. It’s a thin line to walk.

Great show Gary. Love the intensity!

QOTD: About a bottle every other day; not to mention tastings and dinners. Hmmmm. More than I thought?

  23. July 14, 2007

    FTboomer

Damn! Loved the passion on the Rant. I wish I could drink a bottle a day. I’m lucky if I can drink a bottle a week. Not really ready to step up to being an alcoholic in the poor house just yet. But your point is well taken.

The most I buy is 4 bottles of any one wine. Gotta try a few due to batch & bottle variation, cork or cooked potential and aging.

    great show!

    best rant yet!

QOTD: with a couple of tastings a year and a few WLTV dinners plus a few bottles a week at home I bet I am closing in on 500 a year

WOW Gary great episode. Your were raging there at the end, it was fantastic, I think the soapbox may have caught on fire!! Great to see you back on the couch mixin’ it up. HERE HERE – TASTING = LEARNING

Good job putting the badge hypertext on the site, it made it SO easy to badge you up.

QOTD: I AM SO READY FOR 365 WINE, the revolution is here and now baby. BRING THE THUNDER, the storm clouds are rollin’ in. My only deterrence would be that I do like to have beer some nights so it may be 335 wine or something like that. haha

Great PASS YOUR LUCK game show reference, the old show (early 90’s) with the whammy characters rocked, that new show with the all fancy digital whammies is just not right.

    KEEP BRINGIN’ IT.

    J DUB
