I’m curious, is this a big seller? Otherwise, I’m not sure what the rationale is in carrying it unless it’s something you needed to take along with some package.

With Amarone, I find that you quite often get more bang for your buck with smaller producers, especially the ones that haven’t been discovered by the big magazines yet. Some of my personal favorites would be Le Salette, Begali, Bonazzi (who does some interesting Amarone-style wines with other varietals as well, e.g. 70% cab 30% oselata) or Antolini. That being said, great episode, can’t wait for the ripasso show! Who cares if it’s summer ;)

Enjoyed the Monday show if not the Friday one. We have 1.5 L of Bertani Amarone 1990 that we’re saving for a special occasion – specifically one of our friends is promising to have an Italian wine party. I e-mailed the winery to find out more about the Amarone and Cavaliere Bertani himself (I think) responded – of course he feels that it is fabulous, though young, so I hope it is.

Interesting show. Never have had the opportunity to taste an Amarone.

QOTD: I know you don’t carry it but Wynns Coonawarra Estate “Black Label” Cabernet Sauvignon. It gets rave reviews for QPR (rated 90-92 with a price around $10-$14). Think they are on 2005 now but 2003 and 2004 are all I’ve come across so far.

Made my way to the hallowed halls of Wine Library for the first time. Picked up 2 cases of mixed bottles so we are excited about all the new wines to try (normally we never pick up stuff like Muscadet or Beaujolais). I do have to say that I was extremely disappointed in the Bon Bon Rose after the positive review you gave it not too long ago. Tasted like completely flat cheap rose champagne or even watered down red wine vinegar with a touch of fruit juice. I would probably give it a 78. Hopefully the remainder of the 2 cases fair better!

Finally comin’ out of “lurker” status for this one.

QOTD: Gary, in your quest to bring back Merlot, I’d be interested to see you taste the Twomey Cellars Merlot 2003. I’ve visited their tasting room twice, and have really enjoyed trying their wine, but only recently pulled the trigger on buying a bottle from Wine Library since you’ve got such great pricing. Twomey employs “the soutirage traditional, a labor-intensive approach used by classified growths in Bordeaux.” (More info on that technique on http://www.TwomeyCellars.com)

Excellent show idea today. When I first began my entry into wine two years ago, I was focused entirely on Italian wines – mostly because I was about to travel to Tuscany and I was already obsessed with anything Italian. Since getting plugged into WLTV however, I have greatly expanded my wine worldview, but there’s always going to be a place in my heart for the great Aglianicos, Super Tuscans, Brunellos, Barolos…etc. of the world.

One thing that caught my interest today was that you mentioned how much you like gnocci and exotic meats such as wild boar. But looking back a few months, you mentioned you weren’t a big fan of Italian quisine. That’s an interesting contrast, because in Toscana, they are really big on roasted game such as boar, pheasant, rabbit, duck, quail, and even pidgeon.

And let me tell you about the cheese! (you probably allready know everything I’m saying so don’t feel like I’m lecturing you) One of the greatest marriages of flavour in my opinion is that between aged parmagiano reggiano and porcini mushrooms or truffles. There is an almost haunting element of nuttiness and earthiness in this flavor profile that cannot be truely expressed authentically with anything other than an Old World style Italian red wine. (sour cherry heaven)

So, with that said, I prefer Northern Italian quisine myself, and I think you would probably too, if I’m correct in guessing you’re not a huge fan of the heavy tomato sauces smothered on pasta in Southern Italy, or perhaps in New York – there is a big difference between “Americanized” Italian food and authentic Italian food. At its essence is creativley combining ingredients in a simple fashion, letting the main ingredients’ true flavors shine through without having to compete with heavy sauces or excessive seasonings. And in Toscana, it’s all about rustic meat like rabbit stewed all day long in Brunello di Montalcino!

And this leads me into the QOTD: I’d like you to taste the “Pieve Del Vescovo Tezio 2002,” even though you have rated it, but not on the show itself (keeping with the Italian theme). If you refuse, you cannot refuse “Chateau La Vieille Cure Fronsac 2003,” 92 points Robert Parker – Bordeaux… TWENTY TWO BONES!!!!!!!! (but not in your store)

Good show Gary, not great, but good. I cringed when I saw you taste the last bottle. It reminded me of tasting Sour Patch Kids for the first time when I was 7 years old.

Question of the Day: If you want to really bring some “Thunder” on Friday, I quadruple-dog-dare you to taste out some Cakebread Cab. Either that, or have you done a “tribute to screwcaps” show….I think it would be an awesome show to show the wine world that there is nothing to be afraid of when it comes to screw-caps. If you so choose…. “Layer Cake Shiraz” would be an excellent screwcap to taste. If you don’t think it brings the thunder, my lurking will stop, and I will post everyday…..until you get cancelled….

Hi Gary. Please taste the Forth Cabernet Sauvignon Trois Enfants 2002 . This is a fantastic small producer in Dry creek. I enjoyed the 2001 so much I contacted Jann and Gerry Forth and they envited my wife and I to stop in to their winery so we booked a trip from Ohio to Sonoma / Napa and meet this great couple. This wine comes from a small 10 acre vineyard in Dry Creek. They would be thrill if you tasted the wine. The 2002 is more approachable than the great 2001. I have 10 bottles of the 2001 left. Plan to take some years on this one.

    Tommy Vernieri

I’m with you on the gnocchi and the boar. There is an awesome Italian restaurant here in Charleston, SC that gets wild boar from North Carolina and it is delicious. They also have a solid wine bar where I have tried some of the pricier Italian varietals by the glass without dropping $50 on a bottle. Another thing that I’ve had there and loved is the Allegrini Recioto (a dessert wine with awesomely rich fruit).

QOTD: I would like to see you taste a wine that I have had before and can remember (my wine memory isn’t always so great). I’d also love for it to be something that I can easily get again to see if I recognize any of the aromas and flavors you call out. My wine experience has hardly any overlap with the wines you’ve tasted so I’d like to see if your palate matches up with mine at all or if you’re just full of baloney.

Wine Library doesn’t carry any of these (what’s up with that), so I’ll give you a bunch of choices, but pick the ones at the top.

Clay Station 2003 Malbec – I though this was a solid value; it’s a Calilfornia Malbec so that’s a bit different too.

Jessup Cellars 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon – This would be my first choice but it’s probably hard to find on short notice.

Arrowood 2004 Cote de Lune Blanc – This wasn’t one of my favorites but I feel like it’s one of the whites that I’ve had that was complex and accessible at the same time.

Robert Mondavi 2005 Private Selection Pinot Noir – I feel like this fills a spot in the value Pinot Noir category. It’s probably not characteristic of Pinot Noir though (I don’t know), so maybe that doesn’t make your grade.

Anakena 2005 ONA Red Blend – I really like this. It’s not expensive, it’s from South America, and it’s a blend. I feel like it’s a bit of a one-dimensional fruit bomb but I still like it; I’m curious to see what you think.

DeLoach 2004 OFS Pinot Noir – This wine was awesome; it doesn’t really fit my criteria because shipping charges from California push it beyond what I’m willing to pay for a second bottle, but what the heck.

QQTD: “La Granacha 2005 Signargues Cote Du Rhone” This is something that I tried when I first started tasting wines(which is not that long ago). I remember it being a bit bitter when first tasted but after 3~4 hours of decanting, this wine became a complete cherry juice. I don’t know if I was just mistaken, like you said, I should trust my palette but I just need little clarification that what I felt was true or not…. I would like to see you live by you mantra when blow everyone away by presenting something really unexpected.

What about the one that been blabbing about?

Familia Deicas Premiere Cru Garage is an Uruguayan Tannat that will reset (or set) all the ideas about this country. As if anyone has any set idea about it. It is a wonderfully bold, elegantly full and particularly interesting wine. A modern wine with an old world appeal on its spices and earth tones. A pleaser for “Neworlders” as well as the open minded old world fans. I found a distributor on the US: http://www.truevineimports.com
(and i’ll not stop bugging everyone before you try this one)

But again, must be a hard wine to find.

QOTD: Castell Del Remei Gotim Bru 2004,
    WL Code# 28578
    WL Price $9.99
    Jay Miller Score: 90 pts

Ok- the reason that I would like to see you taste this wine is because I recently had it, enjoyed it VERY much for its cigar box, smoky character without overbearing fruit, with some reserved yet solid tannins on the finish. NOW I looked it up on WL to see that you’re selling it for UNDER 10 BONES and Jay Miller gave it 90 pts. Being a 2004, it might be just right to start drinking, and it is a well conceived blend of 60% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet, and 20% Merlot. There was a bit of noticeable oak after its 10 months of barrel aging, and I’d love to see if you think the O. Monster showed up here.

    Hi Gary,

As for QOTD, two other vaniacs have suggested this wine:

http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=32324 (2004 Domaine La Barroche Reserve C9dP) and even though I’ve already asked for another Châteauneuf from 2004 I’ll join them (that makes us three!) I have the wine in question at home and would like to hear your opinion.

Last month I visited Domaine La Barroche and had a very nice meeting with the young (26 years) co-owner and winemaker, Julien Barrot, and we tasted from barrel the different cuvees from the 2006 harvest. A promising vintage.

Some interesting wine suggestions all around. Maybe next time it would help to narrow our thinking if Gary could suggest a varietal or a region so we wouldn’t be all over the place.

As a general comment, I’d love to see a couple of shows devoted to the $12 and under or $10 and under category, particularly the blends. Someone above suggested the Tablas Creek Cotes de Tablas Blanc (of which I am a fan), I’d also like to see the Cline Oakley Five Reds in one of those shows.

I’ve never been a huge Amarone guy, simply because the wines I’ve tried have too much of the dried raisin/prune aspect, both on the nose and on the palate. Yada, yada, the Tommasi sounds interesting.

QOTD: You used to carry the Canonica a Cerreto Chianti Classico, but your site states that it is sold out (it was the 2002 vintage). Canonica a Cerreto makes “Sandiavolo,” a wine we import for Illinois. It’s 1/3 each Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. If you can get a bottle of the 2001 vintage, I’d love to see you try it. The 2003 is nice as well. Both should be right at or around $30, and they’re rated 91 and 90 WS respectively.

    HRRMMMMM…

I don’t have much time to make picks but I’m always thinking about what you should try on the show, this could be great! I’m going to see MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN TONIGHT! at the PNC Bank Arts Center for the Tool show! Maybe I’ll see him and ask him to contact you or maybe I’LL MAKE A SIGN SAYING: PLEASE GOD MAYNARD BE ON WLTV!!!!!!!!!

Here are my humble CKC picks:

Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier which Mr. Terroir himself loves…

    https://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=31614

The ‘01 Moccagatta Barbaresco that everyone raved about at the recent NYC dinner. I personally was very dismayed and confused by why people like this wine, I’d like to hear your take!

    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=23871

I just picked one of these up and I’d like to see your impression, I know Kahuna brought this to the NYC offline as well and I think he’d love to know

    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=31601

    Good luck to everyone!

QOTD: I would like you to try a top wine from the Rhone. You have done big Bordeaux, Cali Cabs, Australian, Spanish, Italian, wines but never a top Rhone (Hermitage or Cote Roti), so let me suggest one:

    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=30365

What I really want to know is can I buy a Goat Roti, or a Shiraz Viognier, or other faux Cote Roti and get anywhere close to these wines but for half the price or are these really something special?

GARY MY MAN HAVE YOU DONE A LEWIS CAB YET?

It’s been over 4 months since you’ve done any petite sirah, which was the wooden nickel from the 200th anniversary episode (and over 3 since you did the last wine with any petite sirah in it — the rutherglen), so how about another for Friday’s episode?

My vote: One of the Turley Petite Sirahs that scores so well on Cellartracker — http://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?O=CScoreSort+DESC&fInStock=1&iUserOverride=0&Table=List&szSearch=turley+petite you guys don’t carry it.

If it’s one you carry, how about the Howling Dog Durif (which somebody else on the Ask Gary board requested as well, so it’s not just me! — https://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=7719), the Earthquake (love the blueberrries in wine like you love sour cherry — https://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=9068), the Erna Schein (93 Tanzer — https://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=32762 (), Fife Redhead (92 wine enthusiast, and at $19.99!!! — yes, I’m biased because I’m a redhead who loves petite sirah, but I have 5 bottles left in my fridge and absolutely love the stuff), or the T-vine (https://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=33098).
You know, you could do those plus the Gedeon (for the Aussie, Israeli, and American Terroir trifecta) and have just a whole Petite Sirah episode :)

As for the Bogle, I’d pass on tasting. You’ve had it before (though not on the show) as you mentioned in the petite sirah episode, and it’s not that great, especially when it’s around the same price as the Concannon. But let me be the 3rd on here to request the Redhead (with the vineyard named after Dennis Fife’s wife — Karen MacNeil).

Spread the Walla Walla Love! Gary I know you have some walla walla gems in your inventory, I’ve been there to NJ to see it, why don’t you bust out a nice cab blend or better yet Cab Franc 100%, they are rising in a big way, Spring Valley Cab Franc 2002 18 dollars scored 94 with the Wine Spectator crowd. Find a Walla Walla cab franc and ill put one of your badges on my site. i could over night you one as well.

I would like to see you try an inexpensive Merlot from Bordeaux on Friday’s show for those of us with shallow pockets –

    Christian Moueix 2003 Merlot
    Merlot from France – Bordeaux

Christian oversees the family’s ten properties in Pomerol and St. Émilion, including Château Pétrus and Château Trotanoy, and runs a Napa Valley winery, Dominus Estate. Does this version compare to the top wines in any way?

Interesting Amarone faceoff…Due to the laborious method of production they are very expensive. Some hit the mark and others disappoint. Thanks for calling it as you taste it. Some other reliable Amarone producers from Valpolicella are Quintarelli, Viviani, Tommaso Bussola and Serego Alighieri.

QOTD: How about something you stashed and brought us back from California?
or a New World vs. Old World with the same vigneron such as Joseph Drouhin’s Chambolle-Musigny vs. Domaine Drouhin from Dundee,Oregon. Add a Central Otago, NZ Pinot Noir as a wild card….

Great show, Gary. Good to see you just hanging out drinking some wine!

QOTD: My number one choice would be for a wine I tasted for the first time the other day. The 2004 Standish Chardonnay (Anderson Valley, not Down Under). I visited this new winery (started by Ken, Miles, and Valerie Oswald, long-time wine makers in the valley) not knowing what to expect. I had some good PN and a good PN Rose, and then Valerie convinced me to try their Chardonnay. Now, I am not what you would call a Chardonnay person. Even great Chardonnay I tend to stay away from – not that I can’t find it interesting, it just tends to sit at the bottom of my preferences. But this one was fascinating to me. And – and this is probably why I liked it so much – it tasted more like a nuanced Riesling than a Chardonnay. Some strange Finger Lakes clone. They don’t seem to have much distribution yet, but Dean & DeLuca appears to carry the wine: http://www.deandeluca.com/ViewProduct.aspx?ProductID=160208729&CategoryID=168 or you can order direct from them at (707) 895-9213 – just ask for the Riesling in Chardonnay clothing. I hope you get a chance to try this wine – and maybe even carry it at WL! And maybe I can get a case kick-down if you tell them who referred you *wink*

Yay, Oleg almost got “Garry”’s spelling close to a correct one.!!!

Maybe I’m just feeling ornery tonight but what’s with all these requests for wines not carried by WL or without the link?

Sad to say, you’ve got a snowballs chance on WL’s roof of getting these tasted.

You know Gary does run a very volatile business apart from traveling the globe to bring the best and stay at the top of his game, tasting a gazillon wines (I still say tough life, buddy), playing with every new gadget, checking out every social network on the net, cajoling to friend, twitter pwounce and badge him up, personally answering 1000’s of emails and visiting lord know’s how many web sites, vlogs and blogs (and that’s just his morning).

If I wanted him to taste something not carried by WL, the tact I would take would be to send him a bottle accompanied with a note, followed with an email and a lot of finger-crossing. I wouldn’t at all be disappointed if he never got to it. I swear the dude must sleep fast……

Maybe even a Clio to see if all the hype is true. (I sure think it is, I love the Clio)

I recently discovered a red blend called Duckhorn Paraduxx. I have had the 03 and 04 and enjoyed them both. Mostly a zin base and then cab sauv, merlot, etc.

I need to make a serious suggestion on the order in which you taste the wines…at least for the Italian ones, please taste the youngest ones first, then work up to the older ones, or taste them in order of alcohol content, lowest to highest. Just a suggestion to give the wines a fair chance.

Gary, I just got back from Valpolicella (Carlo Boscaini) where they make excellent Amarone. You’re right, the alchohol content is off the roof but I like it. The Tommasis, there’s also Masi BTW, Alegrinis are very expensive Amarones. You can definitely get those in Valpolicella for 18 Euro from small unknown wineries and beats the living crap of the big timers. In the US, popularity brings money but in Italy quality is numbero uno.
