Fruit-bombs: My favorite! Can’t find the Mollydooker shiraz locally, might have to place another WL order. (Someone has GOT to add fire coming out of Gary’s mouth on this episode!)

QOTD: Lane Kiffin! Love what I’m reading about his energy and drive. He had to cancel the last week of voluntary camp because he was pushing so hard. The Raiders are coming back!

    7 days until training camp!

I picked up some Two Left Feet from a local shop where it was $16.21 I believe, very surprising to me.

I may save a few and try one now that you have given it the go, I hope you didn’t do that just to save face with Sarah and Sparky, or their blue-eyed boy ;)

I’ll be watching on the book of faces.

Hopefully we get to see some good stuff manana. I think I made some good suggestions.

….and that didn’t impress me at all (the wines, you were OK Gary, especially the Doomwatch “SNIFFY SNIFF”!). At least the Shiraz blend was solid, but I’ve never bought a 16% ABV wine before (not including the fortifieds).

QOTD – Most OTT? My facial hair – going thorugh that mid-life phase I think.

Nice Facebook episode, at least these were better than the basic MDs. How the hell do you leave a comment (nice to see A J there, definately CJC domain).

Good ep. More wines that I cannot find in Maine. At least they’re pazzz’s for the most part.

This weekend I’m driving through New Hampshire and Mass, and I’ll be looking for wines featured on WTV that cannot be had in Maine. Hmmmm, should be most of the wines you’ve covered. Keep in mind that is more of a commentary on the state of the wine markets in Maine, not a comment on what you’ve been covering.

Okay, I swore I wasn’t gonna be one of those people who left a comment before watching the show… but… I couldn’t believe I was one of the first people to see it, so I caved!
    ANYWAY—
My one comment, before I check out Facebook, is: I, for one, would appreciate you comparing a wine to a deep, complex, interesting blonde — you know, just to balance out the amount of times you liken a frivolous fruit-bomb to a fun, party blonde. Maybe the next time you taste a wine that is both fun, easy-drinking, yet complex, deep, and elegant, perhaps you could make a reference to how it might be like a REAL blonde? How ’bout showin your blonde Vayniacs some love for a minute?? It’s just an idea….
QOTD: The most over-the-top thing about my life is — I don’t know… going out every week at least once to see the same band perform the same songs over and over again and loving it? I guess that’s the closest thing. Otherwise I’m rather by-the-book. :) Much UNlike a fruit bomb… LOL!

  28. July 19, 2007

    portman

    Oh yeah….

QOTD: I’m too mellow to find anything in my life right now that’s OTT. I’m working on it though. As we get closer to the opening of my wife’s restaurant, then I’ll have something in my life that’s OTT.

And another thing…. I struggle to keep up with your ep’s each week. Between work, life, kids, WTV, etc. I’m sorry my man, I will not create another account to see bonus coverage. I do not have the time for it, and I am comfortable with that decision. If I miss out on the bonus coverage, then it is my choice and my lost opportunities. If my life changes enough in the future to allow time for the extra coverage, then I’ll be glad to let you know.

….and I’m really surprised. Given the press these wines received last year, I was expecting a lot more. I thought you were going to taste the whole family, so never mind about my Boxer comment from earlier (although I’m really curious about this one).

I have to say as a Myspace user I am a little hurt right now :( But I’ll get over it. The most over the top thing in my life right now is definitely my girlfriend. She throws life for a little loopy loop from time to time but hey, we both love wine so it works.

interesting episode! dude, i could totally see you feeling the pain (it’s hard to dis’ people you know). but hey, i think some of these wines are far too young (dunno if they’ll change over time, as you said). kinda surprised you didn’t taste The Boxer, since that was the 2005 bad boy–i actually brought that to a party and people were (subtly–you know how people amble up to a bottle to get more?) fighting over the stuff. anyway, good stuff. heading to facebook now, bro . . .

  33. July 19, 2007

    Cam

Good show! I love when you review the really over-hyped wines. It’s good to get an idea of whether they’re really worth the time, trouble & cash from someplace other than WS.

QOTD: Gee, I dunno. How crazy my fiance and I are about each other, I guess. Seriously. We work together, we live together, we’re together almost 24-7, and miraculously, we don’t want to kill each other (most of the time).

Meh. I never much cared for the Marquisdooker hype anyway.

And I thought Facebook was strictly a CKC thing.

QOD: the prices I ran into trying to find some decent Bdx the other afternoon. 45 bucks for a two thousand frakkin’ TWO Chateau de Pez? C’mon now, that’s just crazy talk.

Think you may find my TN’s of the 05 COL interesting:

2/16/2007: Decanted for 3.5hrs. The color on this is dark cranberry alomost to the point of black. The nose is filled of blackberry liquor, spice, vanilla and chocolate covered cherries . WOW!!!…the palate on this is explosive, extremely extracted fruit showing blackberry, blueberry, spice and vanilla. The alcohol is apparent on this wine both on the nose and palate and no doubt at a whopping 16.5%. The COL is balanced and surprisingly quite approachable at this early stage of life with no apparent heat or harsh tannins that usually accompany at such a young age. The finish on this goes on forever.
This is a very very dense wine…war paint comes to mind. I have only once before encountered a wine as dense and extracted as this , the 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico also rated way up there as a 98 point Parker. This wine gives the term “over the top” a new meaning, pushing the limits of wine into the grey zone IMO. This by all means falls more into the “fruit cocktail” category. The best analogy I can think of is comparing this to being at a cross road. There is a road in front of you and another to the right and left. The road to the left is wine country, the road to the right is cocktail country and then there is the road that this wine travels which is the road straight down the middle.
I can appreciate this effort and it’s potential but also see it going into a realm that takes it into the wine twilight zone. The density alone on this makes it hard to drink more than one glass. My wife and I finished a bottle over a steak dinner and struggled to do so. The alcohol level also shows it’s bold face letting you know that you just drank a 16.5% alcohol fruit cocktail. There may be a time and place for this style but to me not one that I would want to frequent. I have found this one of the hardest wines to try to rate. I am giving this a 90?. I use the ? and will explain. While an effort like this is in itself an amazing accomplishment I am not sure exactly where in the wine world it belongs. I think the name is quite appropriate as it is a “CARNIVAL” alright, just not sure for me that it’s The Carnival Of Love.

I tried to find the bonus footage on Facebook and couldn’t find it. It looks like a lot of young people and I just don’t know where all this is leading to. I don’t need 800 “friends”. If Gary wants to be a DVD, fine, I don’t know if I’m buying…I’ll just stick with WLTV.

    Jay Curtis

    Hey Gary,

I can tell you why some of your vaniyacs have left….. At the start of your run, you had given us the hope of a new way of looking at and learning about wine. Well, quite honestly, aside from your over the top attitude (which I do not mean as a negative thing at all) it’s just the same thing over and over. You sit, you smell and taste wines, you dress up your notes in fancy analogies and you yell a bit. That’s all fine and good, but all we’re learning to do is appreciate your palate instead of learning how to develop ours.

Also, there is a good chance for these programs to teach us about wine as an entity rather than focus on how one particular wine scores. The Amarone episode yesterday was a perfect example. It could have been a stellar episode on what Amarone is, that is to say, what grapes go into it, what region it is produced in, how the grapes are picked, processed and vinified and the expectant results from a classic example (ie.. flavour, body and bouquet profiles as well as cellar potential and what to expect from bottle age). Instead, you asked us to google it if we’re interested?! Not kosher, man.

These things, in my opinion would really put you right at the top as most sources are just satisfied by telling you what they think is a good wine. I would love to know how to tell the difference from a classic Pauillac and a classic St. Julien just by the nose and flavour profile. I would also love to be able to pick out the single classic Sonoma cab from a blind bunch of great Napa cabs. Difference between Merlot and Cab. Why blend? How does temperature in the vineyards affect the final wine? What are the key components for a cellar worthy bottle? Can you really taste Rutherford “dust”? Why do Chilean wines often have a sanguine flavour? Is it the soil? Why is poor soil good and good soil bad? These are things you often here about, but never have explained by wine snobs.

Anyway, that’s my reason for not watching as often… I think others probably feel the same way.

  62. July 19, 2007

    JonE

Facebook?! Why don’t yah just do a show on e-harmony! This is not too cool for school G-Man.

As for the episode way to be the necessary giant killer. Now I wonder since Parker hasn’t put out any new ratings that perhaps he tasted the new vintage and thought the same as you. It will be very interesting to see the big mags way in on this.

QOTD: new computers systems, over-the-top all weekend long.

  63. July 19, 2007

    Stéphane

    Good show, enjoyed the extras.

QOTD: I don’t much enjoy over-the-top things, but I suppose you are the exception!

  64. July 19, 2007

    Bossman3078

Thanks for doing these, on paper my style but after seeing that I’m not so sure, guess I’ll have to follow your advice and see for myself.

Yeah…. bring on nana Vaynerchuk, but please keep the peeing on yourself off-camera(and, preferably, behind closed doors).

Vodka on the chest as a child, eh? I knew there would be a logical explanation somewhere (delighted to hear it wasn’t being dropped on your head).

Leave facebook to the CKC, don’t be dragging us over-the-hillers into there, they don’t want it and it just makes us more ornery (unless of course you’re going to drag them onto the A.A.R.P forum)

I simply set up an account on one of these things at your direction, mind you, and received 4 emails from people wanting to be “friends” 3 of them were from now dead accounts and one of them was a provacative invite from an account with a pic of a gorgeous girl who was my daughters age wanting to be more than virtual friends(and I’m sure the 3 dead ones were similar in nature). Now I pretty much know what’s what and I know I’m not going to have any 20-somethings coming on to me (neither virtually nor in meatspace).

Aren’t you concerned a lonely WLTVer isn’t going to recognize the Nigeria address on the wire transfer risk losing a good customer!

Thanks but no, I get enough spam, amazing financial opportunities, offers for Viagra and whatnot in my own inbox without having to “seek it out”.

Thanks to whomever provided the link for the download.

It’s all good though, you follow your demon and I’ll pick and chose the path I elect to go down. More power to you.

    italianwinelover

Wow! Jay Curtis you really hit the nail on the head….inquired about alot of things that I’m interested in. I’m not a CKC and I appreciate learning about new wines and why and how they get so good. So far as you can tell, Italy is my fav! I trust my palate and encourage others to do the same! I would love to know why bad soil is good for wine and good soil sucks!! Face book??? what is up with that…obviously want to reach a certain audience..I’m not that. I’m not a wine snob, but a wine diva who loves learning about wines, talking about wines, like to recommend good wines, drinking wines and learning what makes a good wine…I don’t really think face book is the place to do that, at least I wouldn’t look there for info.

QOTD: Over the top—-my son hands down, 14 years old, paper route, cuts grass, runs cross country, volunteers at the local hospital!!! He is totally over the top and I love him dearly, not to mention he makes me very very proud!!!! Difficult to find a 14 year old these days that is so caring…some day he will make a fine doctor, for that is what his dream is!!!

GV come back to your roots and enjoy the good stuff!

Jay brings up some valid points and great ideas. We love the show and your opinion on wines. We’ve learned your pallete and can interpret what may fit ours. We are changing the wine world. But there is room for a little bit more education. Don’t be afraid to share the knowledge you’ve garnered over the last decade. There’s a reason you can blind taste several wines and nail down their variety, origin and sometimes vintage. Many seasoned wine drinkers can do this. Your predominant viewership is not that experienced. Let’s share those “secrets” with them as well. It’s part of de-mystifying the intricacies of this whole wine thing. Don’t take this as a request for you to go all technical on us. You understand what we are trying to say.

Facebook? Sorry, pal, but I ain’t going there.

QOTD: Any Australian wine Parker scores higher than 92.

Randy Italian Lover and Jay C I am sure you can understand “PHASES” as someone who does a show 5 days a week and has done close to 300 shows and dealing with wine “education” all day, I am in a stream of less content on that end, but I promise like I have in the past, it comes in waves, stick with me and Jay when I said “Vayniacs not here anymore” Lucky to report the exits haven’t been that bad, that being Said I want everyone here, I will bring the education thunder back I promise :) I’m sorry to anyone I disappoint, it’s tough doing this much content sometimes. :(

i wonder what would happen if you redid the tasting, reversing the order of the wines you tasted, gary? that size of a wine (if you want to call it that) and alc level can put a lot of spin on the palate. by the time you get to #3, one’s taste buds have to be fairly singed i would think. that said, i tried 2 left last fall and thought it should be labeled a port, then we could sit back and enjoy it for what it’s more like (though i agree, it’s fairly one dimensional…ie better real ports out there). i noticed some time ago that in the microbrew world, there are brewers out there using super yeasts to get their beer up to 19%+, just because they can….is that what sparky and sarah are doing? i just don’t get their target, unless they are cynically creating frankenstiens for the sugar hungry american public? i’ll take my 13% barbaresco any day over this stuff. cheers!

    GARY!

I actually watched the bonus episode first, before I looked at this one, haha. Awesome show, and the most over the top thing in my life(and most likely everyone else’s) is fear. “Fear is the most powerful enemy of reason” (al gore). The second one becomes afraid of something they can’t think clearly, and the fear becomes an overwhelming, uncomfortable, and often inescapable feeling…something you can’t get around. I didn’t mean to be way transcendental about the QOTD, but I just thought I’d contribute something meaningful :) Pumped for Friday’s show!

QOTD: The only thing that might be considered “over the top” in my life is the 9 cats. It would be more optimal to have 2, which is what I had before my husband entered the picture. He doesn’t have any preconceived ideas about ideal limits, and he can’t say “no”. Maybe he’s the “over the top” thing in my life. Anyway, “over the top” can be fun.

As regards Jay’s comments, I think it will be interesting to see how you progress with this format; a winemaker’s class would be interesting to some, but I’m not sure that that’s the point of this show.

  75. July 19, 2007

    Bill Luby

I agree with the others that Jay makes some valid comments. At some point, you have to decide just how much of the show will be pure entertainment, what the informational/educational level will be, and how you will strike a balance between the two. That being said, it is fine for some episodes to be all entertainment and fun, while other episodes can be focused on the serious oenophile.

Also consider that if someone has already watched 277 episodes — or even a tenth of that — they might be looking for more variety and a more in depth treatment of the subject. These people may have been looking for and open to one thing when they were newbies here, but perhaps they want the show to evolve along with their knowledge and experience.

As WLTV gets longer in the tooth, Gary, I think your biggest challenge will be wither you want to be a Fruit Bomb show that has the most appeal to casual win drinkers and a the CKC set, or the Old World fans who are looking for ideas about what to add to their newly expanded wine cellar.

I like the format, but I’d also like to see it grow with me and with the rest of the audience.

I’m going to dodge the Facebook controversy and tip my hat to your Dave Kingman reference. Instantly brought me back to watching WGN after school and Jack Brickhouse calling The Kong’s sky-high blasts onto Waveland – “Hey-Hey!”

Either that or a strikeout. Every time.

Oh, and I also purchased a case of The Boxer but haven’t tasted yet. Any other networking site on which we can watch you taste that one?

Gary, take it easy. I watch WLTV everyday because its fun and that is my only real expectation of it. While I do enjoy “wine education,” I’ll take the show with or without it. I can empathize with the difficulty of getting in front of a camera for 15-20, minutes everyday and presenting with new content. I couldn’t do it and keep up all my other daily responsibilities at the same time. That said, I’ve never felt the need for you to apologize to us when you miss a show or two. It’s okay if you just can’t make it happen everyday.

I don’t have a facebook account, likely never will, and wasn’t upset by the facebook tasting video. However, and I sure you didn’t actually intend it this way, I could see it coming across to some people as contrary to your position of breaking the rules when it becomes necessary to fully participate in WLTV through a third party. Just a thought.

    Keep up the great work.

QOTD: The most over-the-top thing that I did was kind of dumb actually, but hey that was 20 yrs ago and I was only 15 and feeling the “heat”…Back then I had eaten some uncooked onions along with my lunch and then realized that I’d have a stinking breath that surely won’t serve me well on my first date with a very special girl. Upon that grim realization, I panicked! Downed the mouth wash and asked my brother to verify my breath afterwards by a “sniffy sniff” and he confirmed a strong onion aroma. The time to meet my date was looming fast, so extreme measures had to be taken: Got out the Hugo Boss parfume and gave it a “whirl”! Believe me, the heat was intense, but my date went well afterwards…actually very well :-)

    Lurker coming out!

I’ve been watching and learning for the past week or so. I just found you last week on WineAccess. You had a ripping price for 2005 Seghesio Zin which I really enjoy. Since then I have enjoyed your over-the-top video productions and shared them with friends and family.

I have watched a few back episodes and I can see wher Jay Curtis is coming from. My first reaction to your show was “Wow, he’s got the wine rap down. If I just listen to him for a few weeks I’ll have some cool wine rap too.” After watching a few, I know there is more there than that, but you know you can’t be all things to all people. Your format is geared to breaking down the barriers that new wine fans encounter. If you get too deep on content, you will miss that mark.

I think what may happen is your Vayniacs are “graduating” onto more advance levels of wine aficionadoness. Which is awesome. Congrat! That is not a sign of unlove, but a sign that you have touched and influenced them to the point that they are ready for deeper knowledge. Don’t change your format to chase them. Let them fly . . .

As for Facebook, that’s not your market (well maybe it is and we are not). I’ll take a pass on that content. With 277 episodes on WLTV, I have a lot of catching up to do.

Thanks for what you do Gary. It’s pretty cool and you are changing the wine world.

I think people are forgetting what WLTV is all about and that is entertainment. Sure you learn a little about the wine world, but this is not your one stop shop for all the wine information. No site on the internet can ever be that, but if the shows not doing it for you anymore thats fine and GV has built a community where these more in depth issues can be discussed. I’m happy for Gary to change the format, but it shouldn’t be for the 5% of the viewer who feel they have outgrown the show. The show is still bringing the thunder, I’d score it a 93+ and for free thats a massive QPR.

I’ve found long lost friends and family on Facebook.

My 65 year old senile logic teacher is on Facebook. If he can do it, then so can you.

Gary!!!! For goodness sake. First there was the “college girls’ vodka plus fruity/potpouri drink” comment, then the fun party blonde reference. Gimme a break! I’m thick skinned…a feminist with femininity…but I have to throw down a flag on your play. You’re completely off-sides. Show your female Vayniacs a little more love than that (especially the real blondes…myself included). Until I hear you make some reference to a wine as a powerful, independent, articulate, uncompromising, free-thinking, authentic, spirited, individualistic blonde please keep your thin, offensive, stereotypical comments where they belong (i.e. off the air).

    Thanks.

comments about the wines (the ones on your “free” show, not the myface one (ha ha, my joke about the facebook myspace etc phenomenom) – no big surprise to me that the shiraz dominant wine stands up to the full blown treatment than CS or merlot – the aussies always seem to overblow the shiraz the best.

Gary I’ve read alot of the comments this evening, and everyone brings up some good points.I’ve been watching the show since about maybe 130 or so. I’ve learned a ton from it and likewise have been very entertained by it.Your definitly changeing the wine world as I know it and i appreciate it very much.As you may have read from me in the past I’m not very computer literate and needless to say it has been very difficult for me to participate in all the new formats . I’m trying my best though.I guess what it boils down to Gary is just do the show the way you feel it needs to be done..If people want to be on board great if they don’t great.I think people at times get alittle overwhelmed or feel a little left out if there not into FB or myspace or Twitter.Just do what you feel is best and realize not everone will follow all the time and that’s all right. It’s different strokes for different folks Gary Keep up the good work and I’ll try to keep up here..QOTD Gary Vaynerchuk.

GV…this is a shout out from a long time lurker and recent first time poster. I absolutely love what you are doing here!! I don’t think I totally realized it until there were two days this week where I did not have a new episode to watch during lunch. Nonetheless, there are a lot of posts today questioning what you are doing with the vlog these days and I have to jump in and say that I think you are doing a fantastic job. I have been drinking wine for a little over a year now and had it not been for your videos I do not think I would have the enthusiasm for wine that I do today. I started out drinking only sweet sugary wines and thanks to this show I have completely expanded my viewpoint. I make sure never to get tied up in a single wine/grape/etc and am constantly searching for new flavors/experiences in the wine world. It never ceases to amaze me the diverse range of flavors that can be produced from a single fruit. The world of wine is such a wonderful experience and one that I may not have found had it not been for your show. Recently, I was about to purchase a case of wine that I personally enjoy and instead decided to buy 6 bottles of my choice and took a chance on 6 additional bottles based upon the recommendation of one of the clerks that worked at the store. Personally, the wine that he liked was not what I was looking for, but that being said it was a good wine nonetheless and I feel that I benefited from considering the opinion of another person. This leads me to my point. While some people here may be waiting for you to pass on all your wine knowledge to them so that they may go about the world as Gary Vaynerchuk clones, I think it may be more useful to them to consider your opinion as a means of learning more about wine. Simply watching and listening as you describe your experiences with various wines has opened my mind to being more observant of the different flavors and characteristics that wine can offer. So, to summarize, while I think some here expect for you to hand feed a wine education, I believe that the best way to learn from you about wine is to observe your journey/tastings and apply your experiences to those of our own. In other words, learn from the best and learn from yourself. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

Dude, you’re gettin’ hammered on this Facebook thing. Can’t say I disagree with the disgruntled. In general, I think you’ve gone a bit overboard with all the “____ me up” stuff. It is getting old. But I know you’ll take the punches and bounce back. Just remember man, WLTV is a special thing. Don’t cheapen it. And you don’t have to apologize when you miss a few days here and there. We all could use a break. I actually wish you’d take more breaks. I worry about you sometimes. Gary, you gotta cut back on the number of shows. You (and likely your audience) are going to get burned out! There aren’t many places that offer contnt 5 days a week. I would think a MWF schedule is about perfect (can always throw in some bonus material). With things like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Corkd, etc. you have plenty of opportunity to stay in touch with all the vayniacs on the off days. Heck, Tuesday and Thursday could become strictly blog/comment days where you could comment on cheese, other beverages, a killer meal, the Jets (especially NC State alum Jerricho Cotchery), how you wasted money on the iPhone, and so forth. Personally I find it hard to keep up with the 5 episodes a week at times (get a few behind and you have to allocate a good hour).

Oh, and I don’t mind the Facebook stuff. Its a hell of a lot better than MySpace.

QOTD: Well, the wife is still in jersey on work (going on 3 weeks now) so the laundry pile is WAY over the top.

I’m with Brandon M about all of you that complained about the V-Chuck doing facebook, or too many episodes, instead of APPRECIATING all of the daily work Gary puts into the show. TO BIG G.– Keep it up… all of it- every last video, “____ – me up” link, and whatever else you feel like doing at in the spur of the moment. This is your show, and I’ll continue to love whatever your gut tells you to do with it.
As a (recently graduated) member of the CKCs and a GARY VAYNERCHUK FACEBOOK FRIEND, I’m SO pumped to watch the bonus footage there! Good move, BIG G.

QOTD: To be honest, my choice to move away from my family on the East Coast, my current restaurant job, and my LIFE in Boston to completely relocate and start a life in LA is probably the most stressful, difficult, scary, insecure, and OVER THE TOP thing in my life right now (or in a month). I don’t have a job lined up yet, but I have contacts at a previous internship, and I gotta go to LA if I want to work in the business that I studied at Emerson College (TV production). Wish me luck.

    gary,

you are a legend. the show is awesome. its your show and you can do what you want. personally, im in the forget facebook, twitter, friend me up camp. but i wont stop watching you taste wine even if you keep asking us to friend you up. easing up on that stuff a little would be appreciated by a certain portion of the audience – though some dont seem to care. that stuff is not whats changing the wine world.

you and your show are changing the wine world…or at least you’re massively influencing my wine world. its your personality, your palette, your experience, your humor and wltv and winelibrary.com and free.winelibrary.com.

i remain shocked and impressed by how much i’ve liked the wines that i decided to try based on your reactions. anyway, i love your show. if you’re burnt kick back to less eps a week. its not all about the education, its about the tastings. and they dont all have to bring the thunder. just keep being gary and tasting some wines. really, take a break if your burnt. balance is as important in life as it is in wine. if my guess is correct, you’ll need a lot of sleep to go with that balance in 40 days when the newest vaynerchuck starts keeping you up all night.

Weirdest coincidence I’ve bumped into yet watching WLTV – I was literally at the store earlier today, and noticed the Blue-Eyed Boy and realized I hadn’t tried it yet, and thought maybe I should. I’m guiding a Shiraz tasting on Monday, and have two empty slots still, but I figured I would check around and see what the consensus was before buying it. Then I get home, check out WLTV, and lo and behold, you’ve drunk it for me. After seeing it, I do think I’ll give it a whirl, price and all.

QOTD: How did it get so close to crush already? Uh oh.

  126. July 20, 2007

These are darn young wines. I feel lured to try them out. The Facebook Bonus Episode was a lot of fun too, thanks! I’m having my Wine Tasting meeting this evening, and will post some pictures of that on Facebook as well. Please comment on some of them. QOTD: my Honda CBR1000RR superbike motorcycle is the most over-the-top item in my life. Delivering 172 hp of deadly power, it’s just too much hp pushing a 400-pound bike. Great ep, G. Unfortunately, I won’t be getting a facebook acct to see the xtra footage.

One thing I would offer is the “molly dooker shake.” I was watching a video with Sparky, and he said that they package the wine with Nitrogen and not Carbon Dioxide. I am not really knowledgable about packaging wine, but I do know that disolved Nitrogen will not come out readily unless you sparge the wine with air or intensely shake it up to release it. If the Nitrogen is left in it could affect the flavors and balance. If you DIDN’T shake each wine before tasting it, I would like you to retaste them after shaking.

    Let us know.

No shock you hated them. You actually have a palate.

I’ve learned not to put anyone down because they like eating calve’s liver or drinking jug wine that I don’t like because I believe my taste really should not dictate what everyone else SHOULD like. Personally,I really do not like being in a kitchen or dining room where the smell of calves liver is being cooked. Thankfully I do not a kryptonite like aversion to it like Fonzie did. I’m a New Englander who loves seafood and I sometimes see a similiar reaction to people who smell fish.
QOTD: I think it is important to consider within what contexts we say “over the top”. Depending on one’s mindset it could mean overwhelming, or excessive, or even adredaline pumping. I could vent and tell everyone what sucks in my life as well as what else gives me joy. The phrase “over the top” can be frustrating to me since it can encompass many things good and bad even in wine.

2)Too busy to go elsewhere to view you, but go for it, it’s ok. :-)

Just to clarify, when I said GV should cut back on the number of episodes I was not complaining. I love the show and its frequency. I simply worry that he is going to burn himself out because its a lot of work for him to keep up with daily shows. People definitely don’t appreciate the effort that goes into this venture. If cutting back to MWF shows would keep Gary around longer then that is what I want. I love this show. I’ve learned so much more about how to taste and enjoy wine without feeling pigeon-holed. I’ve always been too timid to say things taste like skittles, cherry coke, cat pee, or swedish fish but GV has helped broaden the dictionary and made non-tradtional terms common. For the first time I’m really looking to try different varietals instead of simply looking for a handful of wines to drink over and over again.

What a bunch of poops and whiners!!

Hmmmm ….. you know what ……. you folks sound like up and coming wine snobs. Better get to work on that. It takes time to develop the skills necessary for that role.

FB’d you, Gary. Still don’t know how to work it very well, but I’ll learn – saw the MD vid, downloaded the apps, too. Hey, even us more mature types are teachable.

Well…looks like I have to go sign up for another account…this show is making me become semi-up-to-date with computer type things. I do it because this wine thing is becoming a sickness…really…I’m glad I have everyone to fall on. I guess that answers the QOTD too, wine and cigars…and spoiling my son.

Based on my experience with the 05 Mollydookers, these wines will settle down with time. The first time I tasted the 05 Boxer (very soon after release) I was overwhelmed by the heat and alcohol. Now it is a much better balanced drink. Still a big fruit bomb but at least you can tell it’s wine.

apologies for offending anyone about linking to non-wine stuff.

A very interesting story about Facebook here:
    http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/07/19/could-facebook-become-the-next-microsoft/

This is coming from a highly established technology blog so don’t write it off. It just supports those people who correctly have commented that Facebook does NOT equal MySpace.

I love WLTV and GV for introducing me to wine that I never encounter in California because, duh, California is inundated with California wine. I never know what else to get and it’s usually too expensive to just randomly pick it up. So thank you for trying stuff I can’t find but letting me buy it from Wine Library with no sales tax. Huzzah.

are sassy and saucy and just plain hysterical. Continue to just be YOU
and the heck with people who want more from you. You give an awful lot
to those of us that love wine – perhaps the critics can do a show of their
    own –
My Scottish grandmother always said – if you don’t have anything nice to say……….

I too love my sauvignon blanc – daily.

I had both the “2 left ft” & “The Boxer” from last year’s vintage. Thought “The Boxer” was substantially better – much more multi-dimensional & better balanced. If this trend holds, that will be the bottle to get this year (as “2 left ft” was already the best of today’s bunch).

Sorry, just too busy to do the facebook thing – I can barely cram an episode of WLTV over a sandwich at lunch.

Wow, tough crowd, and now I feel (slightly) bad for being one of the people throwing rotten tomatoes at our man GV.

On the other hand, I think folks are reacting to the rapid “commercialization” of the show. Too many dang things to keep track of. I love you Gary, but I’ve got other (non-wine) forums to keep up with, too. Can’t spend my whole day being a Vayniac. From a couple of your posts, it sounds like you’re getting a little burned out, too.

Hang in there Gary, you’re still the highlight of my day. Just don’t sell out on me – keep it real, ya know??

Gary, great episode, I have been looking for Molly Dooker locally and have not been able to find it. I will avoid the first two but if Two Left Feet shows it face I am there. As for the Facebook thing I am not sure about it. I just finished entering my cellar into Cork’d so I could friend you up. Gary: With all the complaints about the Facebook thing, now would be a good time to thank you for what you do. To all of the people who have a problem with the Facebook thing here’s a suggestion; don’t sign up for it. There problem solved see how easy that was? And before you reply but I’m missing out on Gary tasting Blue Eyed Boy…guess what? I have a feeling that you miss out on Gary tasting dozens of wines a day; how does that feel? Appreciate the show for what it is; don’t lament for what it isn’t. Thank you Gary; YOU are WLTV. Be true to yourself and WLTV will be just fine; even better without the haters.

GV, I agree a lot w/ Jay.Not as far s losing my viewership so much as wanting a little more than a rant(not that I don’t enjoy the rants). Seperating wine by regions ei:difference between Napa/Sonoma weather and soil/ cote ‘d beaune/cote ‘d nuit etc…I guess I want you to teach me/us more about wine than just taste spit and say yea or nay.Maybe thats not what your vision for your show is.And by asking us all to facebook, cork’d etc…etc…You risk losing your faithful to chase after having as many internet friends/fans as possible. Gary;I’ve been watching WLTV, for about a month.
I like the adrenalin rush of the show (that doesn’t mean that you need to have a heart attack in front of the camara every day),but what I really enjoy is the HONESTY of your opinions;that is rare in the wine business because is turning in to an industry very fast.
I am sure if you decide to move to an other web site or even become a “PRO” most of us will follow you, as a matter of fact I swallowed my pride and signed up for facebook…but I’m still more of a wino than a computer geek.

“That’s all fine and good, but all we’re learning to do is appreciate your palate instead of learning how to develop ours.”

People, this takes WORK you know. Fun work, but taste the wines, see if you agree with Gary, and whether or not you do, look for a trend. You don’t have to like the wines he likes, but if you know WHY you like or don’t like what he likes, that’s a help.

Taste a wine. See if you taste what Gary tastes (you mostly should). See if you like the wines he likes (you may or may not).

Or do you want him to move into your mouth?

Tried all of these Mollydooker wines at my local store. Couldn’t stand a one of them. The alcohol killed me after the first sip. OMG (oh my g-d for the non facebook generation). Since today’s episode has not posted yet, I decided to watch the infamous Mollydooker episode. Don’t know what people are complaining about. A Vlog is Web2.0 and you’re a Web 2.0 guy. If people don’t want to get with it and learn about new technologies and wine from you, too bad for being sourpusses! It’s like criticizing you for being on twitter!

In hindsight, I can see why you reacted to all the criticism with the garyissorry episode. After all the content and education you release for free!

I will admit that I do get the most out of episodes where you educate or express your point of view (such as your love of Riesling or unoaked chard’s) but overall I love watching your Vlog for you and the passion you bring. Keep it up!

Quite a review. Would of loved to see a review of Carnival of Love. I really like the Maitre D but it does stink of alcohol (initially) let this air off for fifteen minutes and it is a very complete wine. I really do believe it will be more balanced in five years. Bought a case from Sam’s in Chicago . We are all sold out here on the left coast. Love your format. Keep up the good work. You should have me on as a guest. Worked as a flavor chemist in my past life. Met people (flavorists) with incredible pallets.

I’m going through your archives and just came across this episode. I’m a bit of a lurker and this is my first comment. I haven’t read the others, so I’m sure there’re a MILLION saying this, but: Where the hell is The Boxer? It’s the GOOD $20 Mollydooker. In my opinion, it’s better than the Velvet Glove even. I don’t understand how it could’ve gotten left out. Anyway, I really, really love the show. Please (please!) keep up the good work.

P.S.- I tried to check out the Facebook vid, but couldn’t find it. Did it get taken down?

Re: Mollydooker, I found that the Marquises have put out a video describing how you must do the “Mollydooker Shake” before drinking (most) of their wines ->

Perhaps you could test The Boxer and do the Shake first!

Keep up the great work, Gary! I have learned so much from you. The wine stores in (my) surrounding towns should be grateful as well as they have all this new business :-) .

QOTD: Probably some of these red lipsticks I have that are way too OTT for me to wear. Of course Gary V. is OTT, especially in episode 275.

I’ve had 3 of their wines – 2 Left Feet – good! Boxer – VERRRRY Good! And the Goosebumps Sparkling Shiraz – KILLER GOOD!

I’ll be interested to see how my bottle of the Blue Eyed Boy Does.

Intresting wines. Too bad the first to were so high on alcohol. I’ll have to check out my local wine shop to see if they carry any, though/ QOTD: My sense of humor. I make a lot of strange and off the wall jokes at all times. Random behavior and antics…. you know, all that good stuff.
