Managed to stay in character…even while tasting- sans batting an eyelash- bring on the daytime soap opera star…General Hospital & Days of our Lives could use a bit more wine sensibility in their stories, don’t ya think?

1st to actually watch and then comment?

    Sir Chunk-a-lot,

Gary said “Womaen are always in control”??!!!???? Are you sure Liz wasn’t standing behind him with her hand up the back of his shirt?

It’s been many moons from CKChood but as I dimly recall the only thing better than peeing on oneself was having someone else do it for you.

Rowing your boat? That’s one the help is for (that and holding the umbrella).

Hey, isn’t that a WLTV TEE shirt under the jacket? I say bring the couch back and set the nerd on fire.

QOTD about 65/35 red to white, but lately it’s been a lot more whites. Probably cuz you’re turning me on to some killer whites, and it is summer time. Nice outfit. Can I choke this alter-ego with that tie?

    Great show Sir Gary!

lol…What a goof ball!! Just be yourself Gary and to h**ll with the rest…

Guess I’m not much of a wine connoissuer to admit this, but for me its about 90% red to 10% white.

  24. July 27, 2007

    CindyW

QOTD: a few months ago, I would have said 99% red, but my husband and I have been exploring whites and are finding more that we like. So. . . probably 70% red, 30% white now.

  25. July 27, 2007

    gustasopher

re: QOTD – I go through phases of drinking reds and whites. I’m in a red phaase now, but just exited a great white phase where I tasted a lot of French, Spanish and Italian whites for the first time and really enjoyed them.

Nice episode- very funny & very Wine Spectator. The Pretention & and the whole “I just came back from quail hunting” attitude was on point. Keep it up and Please Sir Gary V. II, do pay us another visit soon to remind us how we need not be. Cheers.

Truly outstanding work snobby Gary. What range Lord V has shown us. Perchance a spot on inside the actors studio or masterpiece theater is next. I can’t wait to collect the change from under the couch cushions and on the car floor to taste some of Charlemagnes wines. Maybe the Vatican will lend me his coat to wear while I drink.

    Sir Gary,

    QOTD
    65/35 R/W

You are the only British wine critic I’ve seen use the outlandish, vulgar American 100-point system. What would Michael Broadbent, Jancis Robinson, and Andrew Jefford (my personal favourite) say if they saw this show? Methinks that they would reject your Fellowship. I think that you, SIR Gary, should swithch over to the much more sophisticated and British 5-star system used by Decanter, the world’s greatest wine magazine. Another alternative would be the 20 point system enjoyed by those who are sophisticated and educated enough to read La Revue des Vins de France. One the whole however, you are a very welcome addition to what is otherwise a brash show which undertakes the very un-noble task of opening wine up to the “commoners.”

  35. July 27, 2007

Bet you didn’t have to blow into a paper bag after this episode Gary, your GP will be most pleased.

I enjoyed seeing the calmer Gary… infact, the themed Gary show is a concept waiting to explode:

    Count Gary tastes wine (Dracular)
Pop queen Gary V tastes wine (Brittney Spears)
    Senater Vaynerchuck Tastes (politician)

    I would watch.

    His Royal Highness

Muffy and I partake of reds over whites, 75% of the time. It’s primarily because we’re quite enthralled with the 100 cases of the 2000 Chateau Le Pin that our friends gave us as castle warming gifts during one of our recent wild boar dinners. Quite an intoxicating wine and food pairing, I must say!

  43. July 27, 2007

Haha, I love the way Gary ever so slightly raised an eyebrow and fought off a smile after saying he was going to smoke a very excellent pipe.

QOTD: Probably 60% reds to 40% whites. We drink a lot more white in the summer because of the types of food we cook. Friday and Saturday is almost always red because tend to cook big ol’ steaks or hefty pastas.

  44. July 27, 2007

Its good to know that Sir Gary is a sporting fellow and likes to shoot crows. I could only wonder if he would state that at wine could smell like “A shot crow.” :)

Along with that superfluous jerk-off Gary, Louis Jadot is one of the most over-rated brands ever. I’ve never had a Jadot that I thought was worth the price. Although the real red Corton is far superior :-) , I would like to try a corton charlemagne at some point.

    Sir Gary,

I appreciated how elegantly polished and refined your style and delivery was today on the show. It could not be appropriatley deemed anything else but “The Elegance Hour,” because wine should be refined and proper.

And because I am someone who is unfortunatley of piss on status, I could only ever dream of being as elegant as you are, because after all, isn’t masculinity and being a man all about elegance? But of course!

And what about this nonsense of drinking wine with hamburgers or while watching American football matches. Wine should be consumed with a pipe, perhaps a shotgun while in the woods, or with the womenfolk.

It’s quite sad to see those pathetic people drinking yellowtail shiraz, and thinking they know what’s best for their own palate. Bullroar as I say! Wine should be taken very seriously, and it is dangerous for most people who are not as educated or as elegant as us to make their own decisions about what wines they like to drink, because their palates are not as sophisticated as ours are.

I hope you can continue trying to change the wine world and bring it back to its grandiose status, because people need to trust our palates, not their own. And what about this cat pee nonsense!

Perhaps the piss ons should continue drinking this wine instead of saving their money for white burgundy, or perhaps continue foolishly drinking these rediculous New World fruit “bombs.”

Anyone with any wine wisdom and elegance knows that the only good and propper wines to drink come from the Old World, and should not be consumed without food.

Keep the torch burning my brother, and perhaps you could join my pipe and wine based secret society someday – similar to the Skull and Bones or the Knight’s Templar, or the Illuminati for that matter, but rather than have purely political adgendas, we focus our underground networking and secret objectives on controling anything elegent.

    Respectfully yours,

Duke Garret W. Nagel III of Holland

    Outrageous!Fantastic!

GREAT idea. Hard to believe you do this without rehersals. I like the Character idea! I made my staff watch with me today and we’re all laughing. GV looking through the spectacles and through the bottom of the glass at the camera was hilarious!

Corton’s….I haven’t had many. DO they sound like something to seek out for that price point?

    QOTD : 97% Red

  54. July 27, 2007

    Sassodoro

QOTD: Probably about 70-80% red and 20-30% white.

Sir Gary is a very interesting character, but I’m not sure he quite captures my image of British-accented upper-class snobbery. He seems too overtly hostile for that, as opposed to merely being shocked and repelled by the unrefined tastes and manners of us lesser mortals, if he acknowledges our existence at all. I also picture somebody who insists on maintaining silly niceties. Insisting on a “proper rinse” had the right tone for me, except that this isn’t just a silly nicety. Maybe Sir Gary could hold out his pinky when he raises the glass to his lips, or wear a tastevin around his neck, or stuff like that.

Sir Gary, though I love your wealth of knowledge and accomplished palate, I hate your pompous attitude. Our Gary would never lord his knowlege over us and speak down to us. So what if you have so much money and can afford to buy $100 wines without blinking!? Like Gary says, wine is for celebrating relationships, not separating us! ;)

QOTD: Probably 70% red to 30% white, though it would be cool to be able to drink a white and a red every day (730 different wines a year!)

  64. July 27, 2007

QOTD: Yearlong, about a 50/50 mix. During the summer, it skews towards white with a 75/25 white bias. During the winter, there’s nothing better than getting cozy with a nice red, so its probably 75/25 red. All this is not considering Rose, which is probably about a 10-20% addition during summertime.

Sir Gary cracks me up, especially since you can see the real Gary coming through. Any other great characters in the plans?

    Sir Gary:

Thank you ever so much for bringing wine back to a serious topic of discussion worthy of the elegant, elite class of society. It gives me great pleasure to look down at people of less fortune and sneer at them whilist drinking $100.00 per bottle swill from Corton Charlemagne. It is our tastes that matter the most and if the masses don’t agree with our precise opinions on style and taste, then let them go elswhere: perhaps a lowly NY Jets game and some cheap, ice cold, lite beer will sate their base desires. I shudder pondering the utter waste of life these lowly beings enjoy yet understand that without them, we wouldn’t be able to lock our gates, dispatch our hounds and poke at them with smoky pointed sticks whenever they dare intrude. Thank you for reaffirming our superior status and with any hope that hack of the populist movement, Mr. Vay – Ner – Chuk, will cease his over exuberant rantings of, dare I say it, cat pee and sticking one’s nose up a horse’s posterior. How vulgar! Keep up the great work, sir Gary, it’s people like us that can correct the WLTV ship.

burgundies AWESOME!!!!! gary, you might need to bring that rock licker back for another show. he brought some sweet wines with him. great to see a real specific selection. he failed to mention the big difference in the vintages though. 2003 was on fire and a lot of vines even shut down. many of the burgundies lack acidity, in particular the whites. 2004 was less than classique, but good domains made good wine. since 2003 was so hot, and 2004 was quite wet, the vines produced too many grapes and the vineyards needed a ton of care. it is evident that dom selling bottles for $80 has money to do a green harvest and manicure the vines.

Your insight is perspicacious, your pallette a battle-hardened veteran with medals and ribbons, Sir G. Reminds me of a birthday luncheon in the mid 70’s where I invited Queen Elizabeth and Henry Kissinger over to celebrate. As I eased the cork from a particularly profound Corton Charlemagne, Liz reminded me that upon first tasting a Corton, Alexandre Dumas fell to his knees and said a prayer. Hank just reached past her for the first glass. Must run. My Swiss banker is ringing me. Ta ta.

QOTD – 80% red, 20% white (maybe higher % white in summer) Love the NZ Sauv Blancs on a hot day on the boat! Plus some foods just lend themselves to a nice white. Thai food with a nice kabinet riesling or some brie with a sancerre……

My mind has really opened up a lot in the past year, though. Used to drink reds 90% of the time, but I’ve discovered a lot of whites that I really enjoy too now, so I usually pick based on whether I’m in the mood for red or white, and what I think will taste good with whatever we’re having for dinner.

    Gary,

Come back. We miss you dearly. While I am sure that Sir G has a role to play in helping himself shape the wine world in his own image, we need you to help us shape the wine world in your (our) image. We love Vay-ner-chuk! Especially on Fridays. Nevertheless, great character acting at a time when I am sure you were feeling no pain. If you plan on inviting Sir G back, do it on Mondays when we are all serious, with our business game face on. I need to feel the Thunder at the end of the week.

QOTD: I am probably 10-15% whites, although that is increasing as I learn to appreciate the non-chardonnay, non-pinot grigio (read generic safty wines) varietals. This summer, I am enjoying some rieslings and sauvignon blancs.

I say, old chap, quite refreshing to have a break from that plebian football hooligan who usually runs this show. I personally find a nice glass of white wine refreshing on the 3rd day or so of a test match. Besides, if someone bumps your arm and spills red wine on your white cricket uniform it just ruins your day. So dreadfully unpleasant, that. It will never do.

Ta, ta for now. Must go chat with the butler about which claret to bring up from the cellar to serve with tonight’s guinea fowl.

my good man, top o’ the day to you. glad to see you back, sir. the immense complexity and knowledge you bring to the table is without peer (as opposed to that pee-er GV). you need some french/german/italian/austrian classical music to start and end the show (along with a pipe, unlit of course)–the country of origin of the music complementing the origin of the wine of course.

Gary, I thought I heard you say somewhere that champagne and other sparkling wines are a staple for you, so I was surprised to hear you say 99/1 reds.

For me, maybe 90 reds/10 whites. For me, reds will probably always be the classic, more profound, more health-giving. Whites seem like an offshoot of reds but can be great in their own right. In the whites, most of the time it’s sparkling wines and champagne — nice buzz, goes with every food and occasion. Or maybe a really smooth white like Pouilly Fuisse, or a minerally Riesling.

I am just starting to taste and learn about the whites, have much to learn. Maybe I’ll start with a 10-15$ Tokaji once you find it for us!

What a nice surprise. I think that you should develop Sir Gary a bit more. Sometimes I do like the education and seriousness of wine, but only on occasion. After watching this episode I went back to watch another more “lively” episode. How about an episode where cool Gary and Sir Gary are comparing wine together!

QOTD: 75% white, 25% red. I have been exploring more reds lately.

  145. July 28, 2007

QOTD: I know in the summer I drink more whites than usual, but I think reds are the most interesting wines – more to think about and talk about, more comforting, like an old friend. Difficult to come up with a ratio.

I shouldn’t watch this at night, I laugh too hard and stay up too late. I think the Oregon pinot glass is a little funny looking, actually. It is the Oregon pinot isn’t it? Restaurant series? My favorite is the Montrachet glass.

  149. July 28, 2007

    Harley Stan

Sir Gary, you really brought the sound emitted by rapidly expanding gasses along the path of electrical discharge of lightening today. That could just be the three glasses of chenin blanc talking, either way great show.
QOTD- When I started it was all red, now I try and swtich, I usually only drink one to two bottles on the weekends so since last weekend was red this weekend willl be white. 155. July 28, 2007

    Metal Dave

While many people seem to dislike Sir Gary’s pompous attitude, I think he represents an important lesson. Although wine is and should be fun, it also should be awarded some level of respect – after all it ISN’T lite beer or Pepsi – and too much American 7-11 Casualism can be dangerous as well lest wine be looked at as a fashion accessory or mere party favour. All of the nuance and history that Sir Gary speaks of actually does exist, and I think this tongue-in-cheek delivery is the perfect way to convey this concept in an inclusive manner. It must always be remembered that, in European countries, wine has been intermingled in the culture for more than 1000 years, and for them has much more meaning than a mere “beverage,” indeed for them, their wine is part of their very identity.

    Keep bringing the thunder, GV!

Hmmm, looks like the guest host is too good for the SF Vaynerglass.

Alright Gary, I’ve officially decided that you’ve completely ripped off my WineSnobberyTV idea. Oh well, I should have grown a sac and found a way to make that video a long time ago. It’s a hoot man, keep it up! (And feel free to be more mean and offensive; I think we can take it.)

QOTD: I started out drinking reds only (treating them like daily vitamins — tannin supplements, I suppose), but in the last several months I’ve been enjoying more and more whites. Right now, the ratio is probably about 60/40 (whites to reds) because I’ve been on a Riesling kick.

    QOTD: 90 red / 10 white. . . almost all champagne.

You gotta love this! Gary does a parody of Gary. What an utterly pretentious snob! The Anti-Gary!! I can’t believe he stayed in character the whole time. Great job. Must be trying to work up to a Hollywood screen test someday!

qotd: much like Dominus: more red in winter, more white/rose in summer. I try to drink all across the spectrum, really. I was becoming a red only person there for awhile, but now that I’m back onto whites and roses, reds are for rich foods ONLY! A cab does NOT go with a salad people!!!

I am liking the new character.

For me the really funny thing about this video is that compared to the tasting videos on Wine Spectator this has more energy and life and actually makes them feel like watching paint dry.

It appears Sir Givvy is colour-blind. Shame, that, given the superior lighting in this episode. Of course, he wouldn’t want to be seen as “sharing” the wine with us, as Gary is wont to do before sticking his nose in the equine anus for a sniffy-sniff!

QOTD Close to 50/50. Whites would be higher were it not for the hideuous Oak Monster.

    Sir Gary,

An outstanding episode of Viniferous delights. I will endeavour to save my pounds and pennies to be able to afford some of these one day. Remember it’s easy to get pounds… you just have to divide that lowly dollar value by 2 :)

Releasing hounds?, boating in the Himalayas?? OK, rolling with you so far….Yowzers?, nah, don’t think so.

    QOTD – Probably on about 60% R & 40% W for drinking (70% 30% in the cellar).

  200. July 29, 2007

QOTD: Used to be 99.9% red, these days it’s more like 70-red, 30-white, largely due to WLTV helping me expand my horizons. Thanks GV!!

    Andy

I’m probably 75/25 in favor of reds. At home I’m about 50/50 since I eat more white wine friendly food. When I go out and order wine, I’ve gotta be at least 90/10 reds.

  206. July 29, 2007

    QOTD:

75/25 looking at the whole year.
would love to see sir gary and “jerk-off” gary square off in a french vs rest of the world varietal tasting.
given that this might cause some severe psychological damage, i’ll settle for seeing how sir gary ranks the rhone, loire, bordeaux and burgundy wines against each other. could imagine him reveling in the pinot and the bordeaux, while he pumps the loire whites through his bidet.

  208. July 29, 2007

    Kirk

QOTD: I’d have to say about 55% red, 5% rose and 40% white….all in all it depends on my mood…as for the show…a fun watch…

ROTFLOL this is the best episode yet!

    Jerry the 2THDR

Thanks for doing the Corton tasting that I have been waiting for since Wine Library TV started. I’m still looking for one that has a viscous mouth feel. Please let me know if you run across one. QOTD: At home its 50-50. My wife puts out a glass for me when I arrive home. She alternates the reds and the whites. It takes me 3 days to knock off a bottle. She only drinks a little because she knows her place. When we go to a restaurant that allows me to bring my own wine its almost only red; better chance for a match up. When we go with others I bring both. I usually bring wine for the owner of the restaurant. Its usually at least 10 years old but not my A list stuff. Jerry the 2THDR. I was away Friday so didnot see this until late Sunday.

  211. July 29, 2007

    Jay!

Hilarious! Really makes you appreciate the “regular” Gary.

point taken. Nice to see you mix it up.
QOTD – 93.76% red and 6.24% white. do the math, it works out.

  213. July 30, 2007

    Brendan McGuigan

QOTD: Right now I’d say I’m pretty close to 50-50, mostly because I’m going through a pretty strong Viognier phase right now, and also rediscovering Petite Arvine. Usually it’s probably closer to 70% red 30% white, or 80% red 20% white during the winter.

  214. July 30, 2007

    BobMac

QOTD: I’d say 75-25 red-white. I’d drink more whites, but most of the family likes the reds. And I really like the pretentious Gary.

    thanks for the free wristband
to answer the answer of the day i would like to focus on reds (70-30) but my fiance loves the new world whites, and so I would say it comes out to 50-50 in the end. She finds many of the reds we drink, often kosher, to be too high alcohol. Which seems to be a trend right now in Israel.

Sir Gary looks like a refugee from a ’60’s musical with the staight dude ragging on the hip kids. Maybe David Spade in PCU. Great for laughs but I hope you didn’t intend for many of us to bu Corton Charlemagne to tast along with Sir Gary. Actually had the Louis Jadot from 1999 and what overpriced swill that was. Thanks for the laughs but we want the real Gary back.

I kinda like Sir Gary. I think you appeal to the pompous wine snob in all of us. Just once in my life I want to laugh at someone “lower” than me whilst smoking a cigar and swirling a wine glass in hand; especially, if I’m on my own yacht…only once though.

QOTD: I crush about 57.2per. Red, 38.8per. white and the rest is Sutter Home’s White Zinfandel. How can something be so cheap but so…pink?

    Ferrigno

WOW! never thought I’d seen Sir Gary again!!!! You know, someone posted early on something like “boring” but I have to say, NOT BORING TO ME AT ALL!!!! I like him A LOT!!! the only thing I wish is that, instead of liking “99 to 1″ reds on whites, he would LOVE OLD WORLD WHITES and KILL everyone who do thinks reds are better than whites! LOVE TO SEE SIR GARY MORE OFTEN, NOT BORING AT ALL!
QOTD: Well nowadays I’m about 75% on whites and the rest on reds. I do love em all 50-50, but as I’m drinking more often with a friend of mine who can’t stand reds this is how it’s going! On Mexico Distrito Federal we gave it a shot on a moscatel late harvest from valencia spain and the vionta albarino 06… both sucked :( sooo disappointed at the Vionta as last year I tried the 05 and thought it was much better…

65-35 red to whites though I would drink more whites if my wife liked them more. I have actually discovered that the whites give me less of a fat head and that I don’t wake up in the middle of the night the way I do with some reds (especially big tannic ones). In any case, don’t agree with the ratings (at least for the Girardin and the Jadot which I have had). Girardin’s wines for me are two open knitted. An easy fat and not very ageworthy style. The Jadot on the other hand, will take ten years at least to come into its own and which point it will be not spectacular but very very good and a real white Burgundy experience–something that no California Chard (with the exception of Kalin perhaps) can do. There are others, even some that are less expensive, but some information you have to find out for yourself (there is only so much made heh, heh).
As for the price, yup, its out there expensive. But it is a matter of priorities. If you buy a new car every five years, there goes the expensive wine up in smoke. I’d rather drive a junker and have a few bottles of grand crus in my cellar. I ain’t rich but I’d rather drink rich than drive rich.
As for Sir Gary, whatever it takes to get Burgundy on the show, I’ll take. The irony is that Burgundy is controlled by a bunch of rich farmers whereas the uptight snobs are in Bordeaux (not too many “chateaux” in burgundy!).

Absolutely HILARIOUS character once again, and I love the host change-up every once in a while. Keep it up, G. Man.

QOTD: When I buy my half case (for the 20% discount) I usually go 3 to 3, and occasionally 4 red to 2 white. I bought a rose last time to spice it up, but in general I’m probably a 60% Red to 40% white type of guy- especially since we both know that white wine is a lesser, less complex, no skin contact, bastard child of the wine world.

  245. August 2, 2007

QOD: Probably like 25+ red to 1 white… I’m trying to like whites but I just can’t get there… I find that there are lots of very good inexpensive red wines whereas I feel like the whites at the same price point have a bad after taste even if I like the overall taste of the wine

That was a fine, serious, dignified performance Sir Gary. I have some ideas for next time. You should recommend a wine for relaxing after a fox hunt with the Prince of Wales. Maybe recommend a dessert wine for when having tea with the queen. You definitely can’t sign off with Gary’s line. I recommend “keeping the wine world for those who are worthy.” After this line you should stand up; push your chair in and do a “superior dance” à la Church Lady.

Found this episode after you twittered about Sir Gary. It almost reminds me of watching Stephen Colbert – hilarious, authentically inauthentic and I couldn’t get enough. When you said the 3rd wine smelled like “Italy in the country time,” I think you meant that it smelled like “County Time [lemonade] in Italy” – otherwise, what the heck is “country time”?

I drink probably 85% white to 15% red. Two years ago it was probably reverse. I really prefer this style of Gary to the other one. Keep these coming!

Corton can really be austere. My first intro to Corton was different as well and I couldn’t see the value – but once you have a few…their intrigue hooks you! Plus, the ‘04 Jadot was a more traditional year in Burgundy. The ‘03 Vincent Girardin you were loving – ‘03 was HOT so it had all the fruit and “applesauce” which is just very atypical of Burgundy.

This was a fun episode. I enjoyed the concept. You won’t make it as an actor, but that was very enjoyable.

I’m running about 40% white, 25% red, with 35% for dessert or rose. In non-dessert wine I actually prefer red, but I almost always have my wine over dinner and white is more compatible with most of what I eat these days. I am looking forward to the weekend, though, when I’m going to grill a steak and have a massive cabernet.

Lol, a funny bit, i’m assuming that ‘Sir Gary’ is supposed to be a bit of an old school English gentleman stereotype? I’m a Brit. and very much enjoyed this, good to see Gary not taking himself too seriously and being a ’self-depricating’ Englishman (on our behalf!).

QOTD: Being in England, it’s probably 75% Red, 25% White, it’s nice to have some lightly chilled whites in our short summers but it can be hard to get inexpensive white wine that can be drunk by itself that has the killer combo of flavour and still keeping the acidity balanced so you can drink more than a glass without feeling like you’re burning your stomach!
