Welcome home GV. I agree with you, new world wines seem to have a narrow quality range despite the wide price range.

Congrats on the Conan show – no, I won’t be watching. No cable TV in my house and I don’t miss it.

QOD – I like scores. Yes, they can be very misleading. And yes, people (including me) will shop by score, buying the 90-point wine before the 89-point wine. But I’ve found that reviews without scores make for very difficult shopping. A review for an 88-point wine that you really like can sound an awful lot like a review for a 95-point wine. The score helps pin down just HOW much you “really like” each one. A great example is reading Terry Thiese’s reviews. What the hell does it mean when a wine tastes like a quartz crystal with cherry glaze??!! But if you tell me that and then give it a 94-point score, well that means something. I say keep the scores. They’re mis-used, but what data isn’t?

After watching this and being told that a $50 Petite Sirah was “very good” makes me even more excited that I pazzzzzzzzz-ed on it.
