Good to see you came back…thought you might stay out in Cali and take over the show.I had the 2004 hecula and totally cocure with you that it was good, but not great. On another note…I had the Terlato Shiraz from Victoria and got to tell you that I thought it warranted a rating of 88 for me…it was interesting to see how our palates differ.

First of all, WOW, you were hilarious last night. Great props, that is awesome how much Conan got into it. I think that you/we/everyone is changing the wine world…how exciting. I have a few friends that saw you last night and called me up and were like, is that the guy you tell us about all the time??? He is hilarious! So hopefully we will have a few more vayniacs in the vayner-nation.

QOTD: http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=5628 Megan and I had this in Italy and actually visited the Rivetto winery. This Barolo is from their Guilin vineyard which is good but the Leon vineyard designate is even better, it kills. So if you carry that one, drink it, but either way it is good.

Gary, great job last night — keep going! I enjoyed the SLATE article too, even though he’s “calling you out” on some things, he really does get it. It’s not easy bringing twitter, viddler, the web, NBC Universal, the East, West, up and down coasts and the entire wine world into one big community that’s just trying to make the world a better place. Seriously… keep bringing the thunder bro.

First off I just want to remind you if you weren’t such an attention ho you could’ve had 4 Vayniacs calling you an idiot in quad and you would’ve had a great meal to boot. I hope you enjoyed the dirt and tobacco ;’)

Secondly here’s for your linky, linky link mood: http://tinyurl.com/2szpwt
don’t say I never gave you anything.

As far as building someone up to knock them down I know I speak for many when I say we’re in it for the roller coaster ride not the destination (because you know you always end up where you started).

    A few questions:

    Does Chris get combat pay?

How long before you start calling out the lurkers again?

Has anyone rec’d the new wristband?

QOTD: To counter the swelled head: http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=33618 – 92RP for 16 bones and worthy for it’s name alone

Please on the couch WITHOUT the glasses and ascot (you know a wine with such a vulgar and crass name would never pass the lips of Sir Gary)

WTG on Conan GV! The wife and I watched it when she got home from work and we were both falling out of our chairs. You nailed it for sure man! I also thought it was great to see you back today with a very business as usual attitude. I’m sure it must’ve been a very very self empowering moment and it’s nice to see you didn’t (at least not today) change your style. It’s worked thus far man, don’t change it now. I’ll post a thread to this affect in the forums also… keep the scores!

What exit did the dirt that Conan ate come from? I’m suprised you spared him the sour cherries wrapped in a bloody venision steak marinated in V8. It would be fun to see Conan on your show someday sporting the smoking jacket and ascot we saw him wear in Napa on Youtube.

QOTD: How about trying a REAL, undisputable wine cocktail like Canella’s Bellini. How about a feature of some Greek wines like a Moscofilero from either the folks from Boutari or Anastasi?

    Gary,

Awesome show last night with Conan. I was trying to imagine how that was going to go, like was he going to do a desk interview or have you do your very entertaining wine tassting schtick, but I loved the “teach your palate” format. That was hilarious!

Tonight’s show (WLTV) was awesome also. I have liked other CyT Marques de Casa Concha wines, so I’m looking forward to trying the Chard. Also picked up a bottle of the Hecula last week and will probably open it tomorrow.

Big G, Big G, Big G, Loved you on Conan, you killed it. Now for my comment on today’s show. The 2005 Concha Y Toro Chardonnay Marques De Concha. I picked this bottle up at Costco a couple of weeks ago and I feel you missed it on this one. Yes, I know my pallet your pallet, but I just had to tell ya, It tasted to me like I bit into a “old school” trash can lid. As far as the fruit goes apple and pear SKIN only. Even at this price point, I feel it was an 85 pt wine at best.

Hello everyone, I’ve been a die hard vayniac since the early episodes dodging the radars. Are there any young vayniacs out there? I’m in my 20’s, but lived in a Italian household that shared wine, bread, and cheese. I suppose they are my inspiration. I had the Hecula about three or four months ago, and it is certainly as Gary described.

I want to see Gary taste some Gaja (I just received a nice bottle of Sperss for my 23rd — thanks to my stepdad) — anyway, Gary if you’re out there, how about giving your golden words about some Cotes du Rhone (Vacqueyras preferable), Sangiovese, or my personal favorite Chateauneuf du Pape… Hell with it, I got a cheap Spanish red called Tres Ojos that will knock your dirty socks off — go buy it for six to seven quid.

I came upon your vlog from Mike Steinberger’s article posted on slate.com. I am always extremely interested in hearing from a normal person on their opinions of wine. This vlog was great and very informative and plan on seeking a few of the wines you had tasted, especially the Concha y Torro Chard. I plan on coming back as often as possible to get some more wine tips…Thanks!

Darn it to hell! I beg for more viewer choice Fridays and then I wait until Friday to watch Thursday’s episode. Go figure. Loved the Conan show…he’s by far my favorite late night guy and now combined with my favorite wine critic for lack of a better description. Anyway, hopefully you get the chance to check these out before you start taping today:

Great show. finally saw it in the Viddler version. When you offered Conan your sock with the rolled up asparagus I spit my Pillar Box halfway across the room. Still loving the Pillar Box. There is a Sauvingon Blanc I believe is Apex from France that my local wine guy has started carrying that is listed as yes $500 per bottle. Anyone ever heard of it and how does a Sauvingnon Blanc end up that expensive? I would love Gary to taste this and see what about this wine makes it so desirable.

Cool, I had a bottle of that 2005 Marques de Concha lying around, so I popped it and tasted it together with you while watching the episode. Butter and tropical fruits indeed, even though I couldn’t exactly pinpoint the mango/papaya mix. Anyhow, nice chard, I’m enjoying the rest of it now with a nicoise salad, great combo!

QOTD: like I said last time, Dr. Loosen Bernkasteler Lay Riesling ‘05 or ‘06. But you don’t carry that at WL (you should though!).

I nearly laughed my guts out when Conan orally pleasured the rock. You guys had great comedic chemistry.
I agree with the earlier comment to do away with the 100 point scoring system. I would suggest developing dollar based scoring, how much you would pay for that bottle. It would be the most consumer oriented scoring model and would truly change the wine world.
It would be much harder to do, but then I don’t get the impression that you’re a lazy guy.

Too late for me to answer the QOTD, since “tomorrow’s” episode is a couple days ago. I loved the Conan show episode one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while (I think I left that comment on your Petit Syrah episode). And I loved that he seemed to complement your energy. Shows that you’re the real deal that you could hold your own on stage with Conan!

I read the Steinberger article and didn’t quite know what to make of it. Seems like he didn’t quite know what to make of you. First let me mention that he is my favorite wine writer, and along with Gary, my favorite source for learning about about wine. I agree with almost everything Steinberger writes (love Mourvedre, Cab Franc, and think Merlot is bashed too often) except for his mercurial bashing of Sauvignon Blanc. Steinberger usually isn’t afraid to express an opinion. But strangely in this article it appears he says nothing. Like he forgot anything he learned in journalism school about having a thesis and laying it all out there in the first sentence. So that leaves me still a Vayniac and still a Steinberger fan because I trust my own opinions and palate!

Gary, I love peas too… I would say they’re my favorite veggie other than carrots. I’ve gotta try that Chardonnay… I love a buttery medium bodied white wine.
