Giving a score on wines doesn’t make Gary a hypocrite. He shouldn’t be forced to be a martyr for his pro-tasting notes view as many customers like points info. I’m sure my fellow Vayniacs have also found that Gary doesn’t provide a score to say that people should buy a wine based on that, just that the wine critics have tasted a lot of wine in the category at hand and many, many others, so they can often make informed recommendations if you are aware of their preferences.

After giving detailed tasting notes, points are a good concise way of summarising the overall quality. If people find that points are a good frame of reference, best to include them.

I am in love with Owen Roe. So I was glad to see you enjoyed it. I had this wine on the table at my wedding last August. This is one of my favorite wines of all time.

QOTD: The ultimate dinner always happens in retrospect. It comes unplanned on a Tuesday night, when you go out to dinner with your special one (or ones) and it just evolves into a night of glorious food, beer, wine, music and laughter.

QOTD: Are you kidding? The ulimate dinner is whatever happens to be on the plate when my sweetie and I are having a great time, and the wine is whatever goes with it. There’s no single, ultimate food or wine. Ultimate is about the company. Different kind of ultimate when the kids are there.

And yes, great rant, complete with Thunder Cat action! Love it!

Ha ha ha ha ha… Rant for the ages. You are offically my hero, Gary. Its about time these stuffy snobs got taken down a peg. I think the two biggest factors in their negativity is that they want to sound intelligent about something, and they dont want their precious rare wines snatched up by the Vayniacs. Oh yes, we’re here to stay. And I promise to do some serious snatching…. That wasnt meant to sound dirty. Oh well. Fantastic episode. Lots of energy, and passion, and of course the great wine and cheese combo. You have to love that. Props to you and giving love to Walla Walla as well. WA is in the house!! QOTD: Braised pork cheek in red wine sauce ( I had that at a restaraunt here that KILLED) with a 1985 Bordeaux and vintage port with chocolate for dessert. I’ll take that with a special someone who will remain nameless until it actually happens.

Great episode and way to take on the haters. As the old bomber pilots said, “you know you’re over the target when you start taking flak!” In other words, it’s working, Gary! Keep it up!

I’m up to ep #288 from #1–YAY! Getting there!

Gary that was awesome! I knew you were a wine genius, funny, had tons of enthusiasm and could deliver entertaining descriptions on the fly, but I never suspected you possessed such wisdom. Your opening tirade was spot on! We’re not from the same generation. I’m 20 years older than you. I never heard of Thunder Cats. I never could understand how anybody could get into pro wrestling (although I did watch G.L.O.W. but that was hormone related). Although my toys are not your toys I can appreciate what you do. You did a good job explaining those who want you to be serious. Wine is the arena where they get to do their version of Church Lady’s superior dance, and you’re ruining it by removing the intimidation.

I love this segment. Thank you Gary for bringing the thunder again. Also thank you for standing up for the Vayniacs. I have started a new tradition where I work. We are doing a wine and cheese event every other Friday after hours. It totally brings people together and expanding their palates. All thanks to you Gary.

QOTD: My ultimate dinner is with my wife (of course). It is a nice filet mignon grilled to perfection with crumbled blue cheese on top and a port wine reduction sauce. Grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes with goat cheese to finish it off. The wine? Gotta be a nice left-bank Bordeaux from one of my favorite Chateaus from a good vintage.

I couldn’t watch you eat cheese, without eating some cheese myself. I’m having some pinot noir and manchego! yay jets.

Gary thanks for throwing down when they get on the Vayner Nation, those snob hill types. Curse them!!!

QOTD Porterhouse dressed up in Florentine style (olive oil fresh rosemary and thyrme) grilled and paired with a Beckstoffer Cab and dining with my significant other. (sides any veggie and creme brulee for dessert).

Way to blast the wine snobs, Gary! For taking up for us, I owe you. I owe you anyway for the wristbands and all these great wine reviews, right? Where else can you get this kind of quality without paying for it? No place I know of. Thanks, Gary. You are truly awesome.

QOTD: 1. Steak (preferably a ribeye cooked Medium/Medium rare) with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and a bottle of Cabernet. 2. Grilled Halibut on a bed of risotto with a bottle of Egon Mueller Sharzoff 2004 Riesling.

    Gary!
First time writer, new WLTV fan.
    LOOOONG time wine fan.
There are always desenters to ANY viewpoint. You – my man, have helped countless people explore the depths of their wine appreciation. That’s good enough for me. The youger folks can now begin to train their palate to appreciate the better things in life even if they can’t afford health insurance. First things first.

Simply stated- wine IS life. Without the frivolity and exploration of wine, life would be (more) of a singlular demention operation. I love the adventure my tastebuds take me when a nice one hits them. Food just makes it better.

QOTD- Coq au Vin. old world red and a slab of tart apple crisp with home made vanilla ice cream – with my wonderful wife (Nancy) and son Michael. That, or thin crust home made pizza with marinated tomatoes drizzled with olive oil, balsamic vinegar with artichoke hearts, green and black olives and asiago cheese. Same wine would suffice.
    Oh man, I gotta EAT!

Kudos for taking wine bullies by the horns GV! Knowledge should serve to empower and elighten people instead of intimidate them. QOTD: There is no ‘ultimate’ food and wine experiences for me, but I do have many fond memories of some of special times with great people, food and wine. I continue to relish sharing wonderful food and wine with friends and family.

    Gary,

Great show! It is always a treat.

Qotd: she-crab soup, tomato salad, filet mignon with matre d’hotel butter, asparagus with oscar sauce, creme brulee, paired with a sauvignon blanc to start and a Quintessa to finish. With my wife of course.

    Dear Gary,

Great show today — I never would have thought of the Basque goat cheese with the Pfalz wine — usually with German rieslings and weissburgunders I like an aged Gruyere (try it sometime, you’ll like it).

I’m baaaaack. Just landed from Brussels yesterday after a summer in Trier (mostly tasting Mosel and Saar wines). I have to say I’ve recently become a convert … not going to stop preaching about the Saar, but I’m loving the Pfalz wines. Even the Dornfelder Trocken and Dornfelder Roses!!

Thanks for taking a bit of time for them.

Looking forward to not having to follow you only via Twitter any longer. My girlfriend was getting pretty mad because every time we’d have dinner I’d get like 10 Twitters from you! ;o)

    Regards,
    Daniel

Hooray for Walla Walla!! QOTD: Copper River Salmon, poached or grilled, with a neat OR or Burgandy Pinot Noir – shared with my wife, of course! Keep on bringing the thunder you do so well. Thunder, hmm, that’s one thing we have very little of in the NW – sure miss that great sound! Great day – started w/Episode 288 and ended with a great Mariner win!!
