Great to have you back Erik. Hope things are going well with the family.

This is the first episode that Sarah and I have watched together and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Not for the wines that were tasted or the theme of the episode (although it was a good one). You’ve had a ton of comments about your intro ‘rant’ and all we could do was nod our heads. It’s good to know that there are more people out there like us. People that just want to enjoy ourselves, but at the same time enjoy some excellent wine (and maybe learn a little something). Which brings me to the question of the day…

QOTD: Sit me down at the Chef’s Table at a 5 star restaurant. Alone. Feed me beluga caviar, perfectly seared foie gras, black truffles, and any of the most expensive foods that can be prepared. That’s….that’s…garbage…

I feel that it doesn’t matter WHAT you’re eating, but WHO you’re eating with. You can feed me grilled cheese heated on a radiator, and so long as I’m with someone that is near and dear to me, THAT will be my ultimate meal.

I’ve have hundreds of my greatest meals ever. Each one is unique, spent with someone who is special to me, and I look forward to the next.

heh, I like the “hater grater” idea. Maybe you could even save all the shavings and have some kind of celebration when the pile reaches a certain height.

    Dear Gary,

Your approach to wine and community remains an inspiration. You are the Obama of the wine world, while Parker and Spectator are its Hillary Clinton. In other words, you’re changing the world, and motivating others to take part in the change. Those who love the status quo will inevitably balk whenever you make any headway, but that only proves that they see you as a genuine threat. I’m confident that what you are doing is good for America. You’re not defiling something sacred; you’re sharing something wonderful with the masses. And I will continue to be your advocate wherever I go.

Gary i have the first technological advance idea from the “Changing the wine world labs”.

Go out to office depot and get yourself a crosscut paper shredder. Print out a big sticker that says “WLTV Hater Grater” and slap it on the front. Now every time you get one of those lame hater mail letters slam it into the hater grater on the show. It will make you feel better and show these critics of the new style just “a little bit” of what we are about :D .

Great show! Nice to include a little lightening with the THUNDER! QOTD: Thick rib eye, some sassy, garlicy, cheesy pasta, and chocolate lava cake, with a bottle of 2002 Quilcita Creek Cab…with my wonderful wife who is very good company, but doesn’t like red wine. (I get to drink the whole bottle!!)

    Gary –

Lurker coming out into the light here. ADORE your show – do not even think about changing and good for you for “sticking it to the man”.

I too am glad you gave some props to Washington State wines. I “developed” a true appreciation for wine while living in Yakima. Hell, nothing else to do in Yakima than partake in some good Yakima Valley wines –

Interesting idea about the muscat as G.Marnier – one of my favorite drinks is a “Blueberry Tea” – 1 black tea bag steeped in 1oz GM, 1oz scalding water – all of it “resting” on top of another glass of hot water. I’ll try replacing the GM with the muscat – might work?

    Keep it up.

Gary, YOU ARE MY HERO!!! Thanks for the Walla Walla praise…I’m going in September and having been to Napa twice now, I can’t wait to make the comparison (but I’m secretely biased toward Walla Walla as I LOVE MY HOME STATE!)

Good rant, too. Don’t let the a-holes get you down, keep on keepin’ on!

Gary, I would just like to say that I have been a VAYNIAC for a while now, well 7 months, but anyway I did spend my time reading books and scores, then I took “The Test” with Four Master Sommeliers teaching, and what I learned (other then wine) was that we “Sommeliers” are trying to get a way from this noses in the air, stuck up Better then everyone way that people who e-mail you are trying to turn you into. DON’T CHANGE!!!! If they don;t like WLTV then whay the HELL are they watching??????? I don’t get it, also why are they wasting your time by filling up your e-mail box with that !^%#@#? I was going to e-mail this to you but I know you have to read that crap first then get to the real fans but hay man keep up the GREAT work.

    Nothing but love!

    Go Vikes!

I love it when you talk dirty…I mean, when you freak out. That was up there with the tasting glass simpsons plastic cup rant. Nice job calling out the douchebag wine snobs with the stick up their ass! Wine isn’t just THEIR world anymore it’s EVERYONE’S world.

QOTD: Anything with truffles, 1990 La Tache, and the fam.

[sigh] I LOVE YOU. Thanks for sticking up for your peeps. :)
LOL– that third button popped; niiiice!
Seriously, this may be my favorite episode to date! There’s something fantastic about your attitude. I am loving it. Thanks for giving it.
QOTD: Oh lord… ok: Filet Mignon with a blue cheese topping and cabernet reduction sauce, with baked sweet potatoes – brown sugar and butter- and grilled asparagus. If I had to choose a wine I’ve already tasted and liked, it would be ‘04 Eric Kent Kalen’s Big Boy Blend Shiraz. And the person: Sara L., my homey in Chicago, because she really knows how to enjoy a meal, and she’s my BFF.

Been watching the show since the early days (an Amarone episode somewhere in the 30’s) and have watched you become more animated and use stock phrases and cliches. “That being said . . . ” I still enjoy the show as you “bring the thunder” and it is always “intriguing” and I’m “super excited” to see what you’re going to “give a whirl” after a “sniffy sniff” . You do get to act “over the top” but you bring the heart and come across as sincere, bring energy and excitement and make wine tasting fun – something that is missing in many other wine tasting circles. So, thank you.
    That being said. . . QOTD . . .
dinner includes a warm King crab salad on belgian endive with a 2004 Kistler Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, a mushroom risotto with parmagiano reggiano cheese and shaved white truffles paired with a 2004 Williams Selyem Russian River Pinot. Secondo Piatti is a grilled veal chop with a 1999 Tignanello or 1997 Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello. Dessert is chocolate mousse with a Fonseca 1994 vintage port.
Dinner is with my family and friends, and Gary V. as I expect him to bring the wine (along with the thunder).

If that’s not the dinner . . . then a slice of pizza from Stromboli’s on University Place with a bottle of 1989 Lynch Bages.

I wont bother defending myself and my knowledge to a bunch of douche bags….its playing into their hands…lets just all watch it slip away from them on person at a time….
QOTD- Lake Placid Lodge, Cote Rotie Wines…ms. winter

QOTD: At the beach, my girl, my homies, my close family for a BBQ. It’s 110 degrees, we’ve had some Asahi Super Dry to make us smile and are laughing at whoever brought the 7 dollar Chianti in the wicker basket, chilled it to almost freezing and then served it up with the burgers and hot dogs. But, that’s a perfect match of good food, good wine (hey cold chianti and grilled burgers at the beach when it’s 110 is perfect), and good peeps.
That’s what life is all about. Besides, the chianti (purchased by the case for the bbq) can be used as sun screen lotion, too.

    The show rocked…

Glad to see you taking up for us, I would like to know how someone could generalize about the wine knowledge of all the Vayniacs. I know I didn’t take a test, did I do it in my sleep or something.

I think blending is becoming more popular, I know here in Virginia the wineries that really produce outstanding wines, have the skill of blending down to the art and science of it.

At Woodland Vineyard this year we are starting to do some blending based of input from Megan and I. I think that we came up with some stellar blends.

QOTD: That is a tough one, The person, My Wife Megan; The wine, Dry Creek Zin; The food, homemade veggie deluxe pizza with feta on top.

    Explanation:

THis wouldn’t be my number one meal and wine combo of all time but Team MJ (MeganJohn) makes a delicious veggie pie and with a great, not too over the top Zin, it is a great date night here at the Witherspoon house.

From Top 10 to . . . well, my office connection was a disaster.

Great, great show, rant and all. I was surprised you did not mention that Owen Roe makes world class Pinots from Oregon with a great QPR. I love the label so I will try some of his Walla Walla but please, better than Napa? Good luck this weekend.

QOTD: My trifecta will take place at Chateau Boyer (Les Crayeres) in Reims, France

    Appetizer: Stuffed zucchini blossoms
Entre: Grilled Lamb Chops with Blueberry Sauce
    Dessert: Creme Brulee

    Cheers!

    Great show Gary
Loved the honesty, thanks for covering our back.
I am a sea food lover, so I love smoked salmon with a nice medium sweet Reisling with twice baked potatoes and slice of warm apple pie with a scoup of icecream. Geeeeezzzz that sounds great. To make the meal complete, I would love to share it with my Wife of 25 yrs.

Wow, you know its going to be a great episode when it STARTS with a crazy rant. Yes you’re obnoxious and over-the-top, but so are we and we love it!

Wine is fun! Gary, you make it fun, and that’s awesome! I drink wine because its fun. And yummy.

QOTD: Seafood, maybe cedar-grilled cajun salmon and a nice pinot grigio, soft and buttery but with enough strength to take the cajun.

Weird? Freak? I resemble those remarks.

Way to call out the neighsayers, doubtful any will have the cajones to go knocking on your door anytime soon lest you take them to school.

Cordials…. oh lord, I could tell you stories about adolescents, blackberry brandy, cognac, annisette and tuna fish sandwiches w/tomato (to this day I can not look at a tf&t without gagging).

Just how does one know something tastes like Grand Mariner if they’ve never had it? Are you psycho…. er, psychic?

Thundercats were a little after my time but I’m working on it.

QOTD: French Onion Soup, Steak House Salad, Baked Potato, Onion Rings, Organic Vegetable Tasting, Special Chateaubriand and Macadamia Nut Ice Cream in the dessert room. Wine? Oh the wine, where to start? The company? TampaSteve, Ftboomer and just the biggest thing to hit the ‘net since since Al Gore invented it…. oh wait that’s just conjecture, now isn’t it? ;’)

QOTD to you: Why do I get the feeling that WL is out of stock on Stonecreek Reserve Cabernet because it’s all stockpiled in a spare bedroom somewhere on the Upper East Side?
