Love the Rant. Go ahead, call me a freak, whoever you are, I’ve got a TON of wine to share with all the other freaks, so we will be enjoying 30 Year old Beeranauslese Eiswein without you!

QotD: Raw clams on the half shell to start, no sauce except for some lemon on about half of them. Homemade pierogies, about a third each of potato, cheese, and cabbage/mushroom sauteed in onions and butter. For wine… Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, doesn’t matter what kind. Dessert, apple pie with vanilla ice cream on the side and some d’yqeum. With my wife.

Tell all those people to SCREW OFF, Gary!

Don’t criticize the man with his own vlog and thousands of fans! MUA HA HA HA! Beat that, SNOBS! YEAH GARY, you piss all over those morons comments!

I don’t care if he didn’t use my idea, that intro was worth it!

I’m not sure I was ever in my “grand-pappy’s grand-pappy’s grand-pappy’s thought processes”?

I love the caution you throw to the wind with your stetment about Walla Walla…watch your back in Napa, their might be some haters out there!

Beyond the tasting notes, I think the best descriptor for the wine are: PAZZZZ, Seek It Out, or Expense Account Time!

“Not the best dessert wine I’ve ever had, and definitley not the best…” CLASSIC GARY! Interesting way to pull out a steal angle for the CKC/Hard Alcohol Heads! YOU ARE RIDICULOUS!

    Hey Gary,
Just keep on doing what you’re doing man! We’re the ones having all the fun and we’ll keep on having a good time, with or without those folks! That said from one of your most loyal fans, devoted customer, and an original “old school” Vayniac (not to mention the one who coined the term VaynerNation;-) Maybe you should be more concerned about the guys from Napa after the Walla Walla comment!
QOD With my family and closest friends I would love to share a meal of juicy, medium rare prime rib eye grilled steaks, a dirty Jers grown tomato, vidalia onion and blue cheese dressing salad, and rosemary roasted potatoes with Barolo, Amerone, Bordeaux, or Washington State Cab! No room for desseert after all that, but if I did have room, I’d have some late harvest riesling or ice wine with a piece of warm apple strudel!!! I think I need a nap now!!!

This is your show not anyone else’s, so they can go take a wine bottle and stick it….well you fill in the blank. The reason that I started drinking wine is because someone is not stilling there nose in the air and has that wine bottle jammed in their….well again fill in the blank. I agree with you about a wine pallet trust your own pallet no one else can tell me what I like because who is Robert Parker anyways? Is he someone special? No just another wine snob that wants me to like everything he says is good. Well that my opinion and I am sticking to it.

    Loved the rant!!!
    One of my favorite shows.
QOTD: Oysters on the half shell for app. — followed by fresh mozzarella and tomato salad w/basil. A nice medium rare Rib eye and a good bottle of shafer Hillside Select Cab. Follow that up with some tiramisu — Friends and Family all the way.

  25. August 7, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

Who cares what anyone else says. Vayniacs rule and so do you Gary. Where else would you read a review of a wine that says it tasted like Grand Marnier? Cheese seemed like a bust as a wine pairing though.
Never could get the site to come up today so I watched on Quicktime as well.

The wine experience is different every time. Sometimes it’s the wine, sometimes the food and the wine but always is the companions because that is what wine is for to me…the sharing part.

    Karl Laczko

Hey Gary, you upset my Sarah, she needs to hear your animated and excited intro every episode, now she has a sad face after the low grade intro…. not good. :(

Yeah, we know us Vayniacs don’t know s**t about wine, I mean I’ve still not reached my 60th Variety on my Century club application, I still can’t recall all the Premier Cru Vineyards in Chablis and can only remember 7 of the 13 main varieties used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, how thick am I?

Sarah’s happy now, you came back to normal. She says that anyone who doesn’t like you or your show should switch off and leave the good bits to us.

Nice VaynerQuotesâ„¢, decent defense, fairly good offense, nice to have you back….

  27. August 7, 2007

    phermented1

GV you are insane. Way to stick it to the snobs.

QOTD: Dinner with my wife would include oysters on the 1/2 shell, steak tartare to start. Then a salad of watercress, arugula, beets, stilton and hazelnuts followed by standing rib roast with horseradish crust and butter poached lobster. Finishing with shortbread cookies, bittersweet chocolate and some cheeses & fruits.
Wines would include Weil Rieslings, Brunier’s Vieux Telegraphe, Mayacamas Cabs, and Sauternes.

Awesome episode. The best in a while.

Gary your the man! But, But, I will admit that I prefer the classic Gary. At about episode #50 you caught fire. I think it was after you decided that keeping WLTV on the net was the way to go, it was like you had finally figured it all out. I think the style from those episodes feels more sincere (I’m up to like #110). Sure it’s still wacky and little over the top, but it doesn’t feel over-produced. Don’t get me wrong the content is still the bomb, but the newer shows feel a little too Hollywood. I realize that it’s probably the direction you need to go to expand WLTV which is unfortunate. Maybe it’s just me. I’ve always preferred the independent films to the Hollywood blockbusters.

I hope I don’t come across as some sort of ass, but since it seems to be topical I thought I’d share my opinion.

    Great episode!

First, you do not have to defend yourself to anyone! You have always stayed true to who you are I am quite shocked to see my wise Master go off like that (even though it was hilarious!) You need to remember the teachings over our ancestors and live by this old chinese proverb………..F#@% em if they can’t take a joke! And if that does not work you can have them sniffy sniff my ass!…:)

Great episode and love the cheese pairing and think it is a great idea.

QOTD – just had that meal last fall. Paris with my sweetheart Mrs. Grasshopper at Le Bofinger, beautiful steak w/ bernaise sauce, with the most excellent frites and green beans and a bottle of 1994 Cos Estournel. Was an awesome meal with my awesome lady!

Sorry, forgot the QOTD (DUH!)….Ultimate dinner? Slow cooked Lamb Shanks in a balsamic Vinegar & Rosemary sauce served with a young(ish) Ribera del Duero Roble or Crianza. No-one but Sarah on the guest list I’m afraid.

(Oak monster ripping of faces, that’s not good. Any reason why only the Quicktime worked today?)

QOTD: The answer would be, a shrimp dish, with a riesling and my girlfriend.

Plus, Gary, thanks for sticking up for us. Despite what the nye sayers might say, your approch to wine HAS brought me closer to the wine world. The stuck up snobbiness of the elite, virtually drove me away from every beginning to get into wine. I’ve turned from worrying about selecting the right wine at the store, and being too afriad to ask the dumb questions, to unafriad and just trust my own pallet. As always, keep up the good work. I enjoy every aspect of your show.

Perhaps my favorite episode of all time…and that says something, cuz I’ve been a geek here since day one…kinda. Could be cuz you rocked out sans twitter, old school…could be that Eric(k?) is back in the hizzy…or perhaps that there was no episode on Monday. Absence does make the heart grow fungus, doesn’t it? Anyways, the angst was dope- enjoyed it very much…much like my current hate towards Michael Strahan for holding out- what up depleated G-men?! Whole friggin’ platoon is droppin’ like flies…yoowwzah!

Holy crap… Strong words from GV… get em Garry!

  40. August 7, 2007

    Shadowbird

Way to stick it to the snobs, GV! Give them some cheese with their whine!

QOTD: A tomato-sauce pasta (probably penne) with mushrooms, a bottle of raspberry wine, and my girlfriend. I’ve had two out of the three…

  41. August 7, 2007

    CindyW

Agreed — Washington wines are rocking the world. And I don’t just say that because I live here. :)

QOTD: I think I may have just had one of the best wine, food, and company experiences. It was last Friday night, at the Seattle Vayniacs get-together.

  42. August 7, 2007

    msb2ncsu

You knew the backlash had to be coming, GV. You took it well, my friend! Just be sure to ask for their tasting notes when they sip on the Haterade.

Great episode today… the impact of cheese is something that really interests me because we rarely taste wine on its own.

QOTD: NY style pepperoni and garlic pizza with a completely unassuming bottle of wine (like the Ruffino “Il Leo” you suggested) all enjoyed on the couch next to my wife while we watch a really bad romantic comedy that she wanted to rent. Close to midnight, when the movie has ended, we watch Sportscenter highlights while we force down some delicious tiramisu even though our stomachs have no room for it. We then stumble off to bed, glad that we took care of business before watching the movie. It really doesn’t get any better than that for me.

BTW, Thundercats lived on Third Earth but originally are from Thundera.

  43. August 7, 2007

    GrapeStuff

Great ep. GV! Gotta love how you brought the th..Th..TH….THUUUNDER to all those snoobs (snobe and newb combo)

…QOTD: Would have to be my gf and either a) the lamb entree from Fresh Cream in Monterey with a nice red, say Pinot Noir from an artisan producer in Cali or Oregon b) since you said it I haven’t stopped thinking about it – Sauterne and foie gras, seared or c) just an OTT fruit-bomb to quaff on its own. Jeesh, i think I could go on through the letter Z with food and wine pairings, but I’ll stop here.

That’s right….time to bring the battle to the streets and take all the morons out!
QOTD – Just had my favorite dinner with my wife for our 5th anniversary. It was at the Old Prune in Stratford Ontario oldprune.on.ca
I had lamb with a 2000 Pichon Baron. Appetizers were Hamachi with a white bordeaux. It was sublime!

Gary. My Man! That was fabulous. Again, way to take the “opinions” with a grain of salt. Much like everything else in life, if you dont like it, dont do it. If you dont want to watch WLTV, then go f-ing scratch. The VaynerNation wants you to keep everything the way it is, which is why we all love this show and the movement you are bringing to the wine world. Keep it up.

  54. August 7, 2007

Coincidentally, I dissed a wine snob this weekend. I asked this wine store owner if he watched WLTV. “Oh, is that the guy from Jersey?” “That’s him.” “Oh [sigh] no, I haven’t seen that.” He was clearly pained by the interchange, so I looked around for a second and walked out of the store.

YOU ROCK GARY V!!!!!!! BRING THOSE SNOBS ON AND US VANIACS WILL BEAT ‘EM UP, CRUSH THEM AND SPIT OUR WINE OUT ON THEM!!!!!!;-)

QOTD: Rare leg of lamb, garlic mashed and an El Norte Bodegas.

  56. August 7, 2007

    Autoproxy

I loved hearing that story of the $9.99 bottle of wine that was the “star of the evening.”

Of course many people aren’t going to like you – the ones who get off on feeling part of an exclusive club of people who know all about premier crus and grand cru wines and find “lesser” wines distasteful will of course dislike the fact that you’re trying to make their world more accessible to people. I say just ignore them. Let them hate the “vulgar” masses. They’re the ones that miss out on the good wines, at the good prices…whether it be a $10 value or a $45 value.

QOTD – Sancerre, some sushi, and it’s a secret who’s my company at the dinner.

  57. August 7, 2007

    Barry Bashing? Uncalled for.
You’re show is entertaining and informative. I like it, but the Barry comment joke or no joke was in bad taste. Thats just my opinion.

  61. August 7, 2007

    Neil

Wave on! Gary V and the Vayniacs will destroy the critics in their towers! But seriously how is bringing the enjoyment of wine down to a level where people aren’t intimidated a bad thing? Gary is doing a great job expanding people’s horizons – EPH – and if you have ever met him know that he is actually quite a humble person in real life. Get him in front of a camera though, and it’s another story. I think the critics are focusing on the delivery and not the message. I find the delivery entertaining.

Oh yeah and don’t forget WLTV is free and has no advertisements. If you press the play button, you automatically consent to Gary’s house rules which include the love of wine, trying new wine, the love of family and from September forward, the recognition that the NY Jet’s rock Gary’s universe.

QOTD: The perfect meal would be:

    1.) With my wife, Julie.
    2.) A bottle of decent Bordeaux, let’s say Lynch-Bages.
3.) Steak Frites or Coq Au Vin with some buttered noodles.

  62. August 7, 2007

Great show, Gary…not really sure how anyone thinks you’re ruining wine for anyone…in fact if they can let wine be ruined by a show they aren’t even obligated to watch then they should really consider not drinking anything at all. If people enjoy your show, then great, but if people don’t it shouldn’t influence the degree to which they enjoy wine in their private lives. If anything we can be thankful that you’re hear so we have more people to talk about wine with rather than just obsessing over it’s enjoyment by ourselves.

QOTD: Breast of Duck with red cabbage and cranberries, rosemary sauce over potato pancakes with a young red Burgundy; not much for dessert, but likely a simple beerenauselese with fruit. Company: If I was really gonna suck up I’d say you, but instead I’ll just go with a couple of my closest friends

  65. August 7, 2007

It just gets better and better!

qotd: Ossobuco alla milanese, Gaja Barolo, K&J.

gv: awesome show today, man. you actually made me laugh out loud a few times, which means it’s really quality stuff. the ladies bangin’ liquor in the 70’s! gold!

oh and keep kicking against the pricks!

qotd: well, let’s go with two scenarios…

this friday i’ve got a date with my wife at one of the best restaurants in the city. tasting menu, nine courses, wine paired. this could be mind bending. (my b-day present!)

if i could set up my own? i’d get the gang all in… parents, friends, everybody who means everything to me. and i’d do a massive array of wines and small dishes to sample along with them. like blow a G on wines, cheeses, fruits, meats, pates, the whole friggin’ bit. and i’d crank awesome tunes and we’d hang out. dare to dream. some day it’ll happen though!

  67. August 7, 2007

    Dusty

ha. way to stand up for the Vayner-nation. we got your back!

good to see that sometimes the wine doesn’t necessarily always enhance the wines. tried that for myself the other week…with a very similar outcome. i probably wasn’t quite as animated, but it was still fun.

  68. August 7, 2007

    Orion Slayer

What a frightening beginning to today’s show. :O

I’m so glad you don’t let the complainers change you one bit.

QOTD: My favorite meal would be a Thanksgiving meal with a great big turkey and all the trimmings paired with a really oaky Chardonnay like I remember when I first started drinking wine. I’d want all my family and my wife’s family there!

For a red, I want one of my wife’s great home-made pepporoni and olive pizzas with an over-the-top Zinfandel, shared with her as we watch the sunset on our backyard porch.

Gary, Now that you have made the big time(Conan) I think you will have to get used to the idea of negative comments and feedback. It is human nature for people to react this way to your fame. I also wanted to say that your viewers should not ask you to change the format of WLTV because the show is perfect as is.

    Robert.

PS: I love California rolls and Riesling for dinner with my wife Elizabeth

    Jen Loves Wine

Great episode – had to laugh about the little old ladies hittin the J&B and Bailey’s. I’ve never had a Muscat, and I am not necessarily sure I want to try it now after that….

QOTD: Any meal, any wine as long as I am with my sweetheart, Jason. If I had to narrow it down — I had stewed lamb dish over grits at a restaurant recently and LOVED it — so that and a great Cabernet Sauvignon. I like Quintessa, Togni, and Arietta.

  77. August 7, 2007

    life's too short...

here’s the thing: it’s called FUN. and is a perfect, scientific method for training your palate? prolly not. is it FUN to watch you and Conan stuff cigars into your mouths at high speed? A decided HELL YES. here’s the thing #2: that fun you showed on Conan is the fun that represents the *new* wine world. the inability of others to recognize that simple fact? well, they represent the less than fun wine world. they represent wine “sports” and traditional wine snobbery. they’ve forgotten that pedantics and stony reverence is not the only way to “live the wine life.” there are plenty of PhDs, doctors, and other professionals who count themselves as vayner-nauts. there are also working-class folks, too. there’s no discrimination. i say good riddance to fair-weather snobs who “used to be your friends.” screw that noise. you’re either someone’s friend or you’re not. an appearance on conan that basically mirrors a previous WLTV episode shouldn’t make or break any bonds that weren’t there in the first place. good on ya, my brother, and keep fighting the good fight.

They are running scared! How dense do people need to be to see that wine is meant to be enjoyed? Wine is not an institution, and it will never be. It is a part of life. Thank you Gary, for being brave enough to enjoy it with us.

Stick with the new tag line, “like it or not!”. I LIKE it!

Great show, Gary! I love the food-wine pairing stuff. Wine snobbery isn’t only about the wines. It’s also about the food-wine combinations (e.g., “Red wine with fish,” said James Bond in the movie From Russia With Love. “Well, that should have told me something.”) And WE (with a little bit of YOU) have to change that, too.

By the way, a paper by Madrigal-Galan and Heymann entitled “Sensory Effects of Consuming Cheese Prior to Evaluating Red Wine Flavor” was published last year in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture. (The abstract can be found at http://www.ajevonline.org/cgi/content/abstract/57/1/12 .) Quoting from the abstract, “Some attributes, such as astringency, bell pepper, and oak flavor, significantly decreased when the wine was evaluated after tasting cheese. Only butter aroma was significantly enhanced by cheese.” Very interesting.

QOTD: Dinner with my wife. Otherwise, I’m not sure. I like the sound of Martin’s idea — Ossobuco with Barolo. Some of the most profound food experiences I’ve had were truffle-Nebbiolo combinations in dishes that were very simple. One was a truffled not-quite-hard-boiled egg on toast with 2001 Pio Cesare Barbaresco. Another was a pasta with shaved truffles and a 1999 Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo.

My ultimate dinner would have to be First course: Smoked Duck and fois gras salad served with 2001 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux-Monts. Second course: Asiago cheese with Yukon potatoes and baby spinach served with Vino Verde. Third Course: beef wellington served with Frenched carrots and potatoes and 1961 Petrus. Fourth Course fois gras pate crackers, and 4 year aged cheddar cheese with 1986 d’Yquem. Fifth Course: pecorino cheese with honey on top sitting on top roasted hazelnuts served with 1995 Krug Brut. Great Episode Gary. I am with you 100% people make fun of me all the time because I am a big vino verde fan but wine is about being true to yourself so I like what I like and I trust my pallet who cares what snobs think. I tell everyone here at UMASS Lowell that I know about your show and it is catching on! Do the show the way you want bro I think that it is good to keep it real. I love the show! Hey Gary,

I am with you all the way on a big rasberry to all the critics who wish to preserve an elitist (imagined or real) vino attitude. But please lighten up on aligning yourself with the ckc (college kid crowd). I know you are a numbers guy and the majority of those face-twitter-book hits come from that demographic. But I was hooked by your challenge to develop a personal palate. Your theatrics are awesome but your shameless beggin’ for love has worn thin with this older, non-fratoid. Your audience must be more varied than your critics suggest.

    keep the thunder comin’

Hi, I’m a freak who knows nothing about wine!

I’m thinking either a Provencal steak with Bordeaux (if it’s grilling season) or leg of lamb with Madiran (if it’s winter). That’s a start.

Speaking of which, I cracked one of those 2003 Sansonnets out of curiosity to see if I wanted any more … sweet merciful crap, you weren’t kidding about letting it air out all day. Nice stuff, but four hours barely seemed to put a dent in it. More dirt than I expected though, and I don’t mind that one bit.

    Dear Gary,

I loved your appearance on the Conan O’Brien show.

It was Very Funny, Entertaining, a thoroughly fun filled wine class.

I gave you a perfect score of 100, and Conan too got a highmark for being a sport; you were full of all the adjectives reserved for describing a perfect wine.

DO NOT CHANGE COURSE, STAY AS YOU ARE.

And to those upstarts, stuffy neck, snobs, have more wine and do not smile too quickly, so as to prevent cracking them cheeks

    Love Ya

I’m going to have to agree with Mudd’s comments. I’m still a huge fan and I look forward to your show everyday, but it seems to be getting a little more about the other stuff and less about the wine each day. With that said, I loved the Conan show and I’m looking forward to see where this goes.

QOTD: I’m old school – juicy filet, potatoes au gratin and an aged Bordeaux with my girlfriend.

Gary, with you all the way – never take any cr@p about your family!

QOTD: Start with an appetizer of Onset Oysters and Littlenecks with Verdicchio, Osso Bucco served on a bed of saffron risotto and roasted vegetables with a ‘90 Mascarello Monprivato, cannoli with espresso for dessert, and a Barbaresco Grappa just for sippin’. Dinner should take at least 3 hours and have my extended family present. If you’re in the neighborhood Gary, you’re welcomed!

Gary, I’ve been watching for a few weeks now and I have to say that it’s your enthusiasm, energy, and personality that keeps me coming back everyday (I check the site multiple times a day waiting for every update). FRAT BOY? Freaks that know nothing? Wine was never invented to be a separator of the classes, just the opposite. France doesn’t want people like this guy. Get used to it, jerk, ordinary people are getting educated about wine, thanks to Gary V. and I guess you’re going to have to find some other hobby to raise your self up above other people. He sounds like the kind of guy who buys a Ferrari and never drives it, just keeps polishing it in the garage. France doesn’t want a guy like you, maybe North Korea, yeah, you and Buddy Holly sipping some Hennesy watching porn. That sounds more up your alley….

    Gary,

I recently read, “Timequake,” by Kurt Vonnegut who made the following observation that instantly made me think of your naysayers, “She was acculturated! Acculturated persons are those who find that they are no longer treated as the sort of people they thought they were, because the outside world has changed…’Nothing wrecks any kind of love more effectively than the discovery that your previously acceptable behavior has become ridiculous.’”

    I feel sorry for them.

    Anyway.

    In defense of Gary-

To all the nay sayers that believe Gary’s fan are “freaks” and don’t know anything about wine: keep in mind that some of us actually work in the wine business, selling, buying, importing, and auctioning these wines. Some of us have been featured in articles, and in the vast pages of “serious” wine media.

If one finds no fun in wine, there is absolutley no point. Wine should hopefully be a joyful experience, and no matter how one chooses to express that joy it is their own choice entirely. Is there intimidation that
Gary is more bombastic than your average eonophile? Perhaps if James Laube actually showed emotion we should fear him. If Gary so chooses to share his personal opinion one can take it or leave it, but one can never fault a man for speaking up.

To all the nay sayers please look somewhere else to focus your negativity, as is most of us “freaks” are having a really good time.

QOTD: Otto: Atleast two cheese courses, pizza, Caponata, Franciacorta, Brancaia Illitraia, gelato, vin santo, espresso. With the old crew Kenny, Robby, Andy and Rose.

  109. August 7, 2007

Great episode. You could destroy Dennis Miller in a rant-off any day.

Just had my first attempt at the old Alsace-Gewurtraminer-with-a-spicy-dish. Didn’t work out too well. When cooking with Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ sauce, BE CAREFUL!

QOTD: I think I’m too young and immature for that question to apply to me. But I’ll tweak it. Best thing like that I’ve had is a couple months ago going to my girlfriend’s condo (You’d like her GV, she’s Belarussian) with my 2002 Pieve Del Vescovo Lucciaio (I’m a dryhead), eating some delicious pasta/chicken breast dish she made, and watching the NBA Draft the whole time. To me, that is (was) an amazing night.

Just how does one know something tastes like Grand Mariner if they’ve never had it? Are you psycho…. er, psychic?

Thundercats were a little after my time but I’m working on it.

QOTD: French Onion Soup, Steak House Salad, Baked Potato, Onion Rings, Organic Vegetable Tasting, Special Chateaubriand and Macadamia Nut Ice Cream in the dessert room. Wine? Oh the wine, where to start? The company? TampaSteve, Ftboomer and just the biggest thing to hit the ‘net since since Al Gore invented it…. oh wait that’s just conjecture, now isn’t it? ;’)

QOTD to you: Why do I get the feeling that WL is out of stock on Stonecreek Reserve Cabernet because it’s all stockpiled in a spare bedroom somewhere on the Upper East Side?

    The show rocked…

Glad to see you taking up for us, I would like to know how someone could generalize about the wine knowledge of all the Vayniacs. I know I didn’t take a test, did I do it in my sleep or something.

I think blending is becoming more popular, I know here in Virginia the wineries that really produce outstanding wines, have the skill of blending down to the art and science of it.

At Woodland Vineyard this year we are starting to do some blending based of input from Megan and I. I think that we came up with some stellar blends.

QOTD: That is a tough one, The person, My Wife Megan; The wine, Dry Creek Zin; The food, homemade veggie deluxe pizza with feta on top.

    Explanation:

THis wouldn’t be my number one meal and wine combo of all time but Team MJ (MeganJohn) makes a delicious veggie pie and with a great, not too over the top Zin, it is a great date night here at the Witherspoon house.

It’s 110 degrees, we’ve had some Asahi Super Dry to make us smile and are laughing at whoever brought the 7 dollar Chianti in the wicker basket, chilled it to almost freezing and then served it up with the burgers and hot dogs. But, that’s a perfect match of good food, good wine (hey cold chianti and grilled burgers at the beach when it’s 110 is perfect), and good peeps.
That’s what life is all about. Besides, the chianti (purchased by the case for the bbq) can be used as sun screen lotion, too.

Been watching the show since the early days (an Amarone episode somewhere in the 30’s) and have watched you become more animated and use stock phrases and cliches. “That being said . . . ” I still enjoy the show as you “bring the thunder” and it is always “intriguing” and I’m “super excited” to see what you’re going to “give a whirl” after a “sniffy sniff” . You do get to act “over the top” but you bring the heart and come across as sincere, bring energy and excitement and make wine tasting fun – something that is missing in many other wine tasting circles. So, thank you.
    That being said. . . QOTD . . .
dinner includes a warm King crab salad on belgian endive with a 2004 Kistler Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, a mushroom risotto with parmagiano reggiano cheese and shaved white truffles paired with a 2004 Williams Selyem Russian River Pinot. Secondo Piatti is a grilled veal chop with a 1999 Tignanello or 1997 Frescobaldi Castelgiocondo Brunello. Dessert is chocolate mousse with a Fonseca 1994 vintage port.
Dinner is with my family and friends, and Gary V. as I expect him to bring the wine (along with the thunder).

If that’s not the dinner . . . then a slice of pizza from Stromboli’s on University Place with a bottle of 1989 Lynch Bages.

    Gary –

Lurker coming out into the light here. ADORE your show – do not even think about changing and good for you for “sticking it to the man”.

I too am glad you gave some props to Washington State wines. I “developed” a true appreciation for wine while living in Yakima. Hell, nothing else to do in Yakima than partake in some good Yakima Valley wines –

Interesting idea about the muscat as G.Marnier – one of my favorite drinks is a “Blueberry Tea” – 1 black tea bag steeped in 1oz GM, 1oz scalding water – all of it “resting” on top of another glass of hot water. I’ll try replacing the GM with the muscat – might work?

    Keep it up.

Gary i have the first technological advance idea from the “Changing the wine world labs”.

Go out to office depot and get yourself a crosscut paper shredder. Print out a big sticker that says “WLTV Hater Grater” and slap it on the front. Now every time you get one of those lame hater mail letters slam it into the hater grater on the show. It will make you feel better and show these critics of the new style just “a little bit” of what we are about :D .

    Dear Gary,

Your approach to wine and community remains an inspiration. You are the Obama of the wine world, while Parker and Spectator are its Hillary Clinton. In other words, you’re changing the world, and motivating others to take part in the change. Those who love the status quo will inevitably balk whenever you make any headway, but that only proves that they see you as a genuine threat. I’m confident that what you are doing is good for America. You’re not defiling something sacred; you’re sharing something wonderful with the masses. And I will continue to be your advocate wherever I go.

Great to have you back Erik. Hope things are going well with the family.

This is the first episode that Sarah and I have watched together and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Not for the wines that were tasted or the theme of the episode (although it was a good one). You’ve had a ton of comments about your intro ‘rant’ and all we could do was nod our heads. It’s good to know that there are more people out there like us. People that just want to enjoy ourselves, but at the same time enjoy some excellent wine (and maybe learn a little something). Which brings me to the question of the day…

QOTD: Sit me down at the Chef’s Table at a 5 star restaurant. Alone. Feed me beluga caviar, perfectly seared foie gras, black truffles, and any of the most expensive foods that can be prepared. That’s….that’s…garbage…

I feel that it doesn’t matter WHAT you’re eating, but WHO you’re eating with. You can feed me grilled cheese heated on a radiator, and so long as I’m with someone that is near and dear to me, THAT will be my ultimate meal.

I’ve have hundreds of my greatest meals ever. Each one is unique, spent with someone who is special to me, and I look forward to the next.

Forget about the guys bad mouthing you. Chances are they are form competitors trying to downgrade WLTV.

I see the same thing in apartment reviews around Houston. Amazing how all the negative comments seem to sound very much alike.

    Gary,

I think you are exactly what the wine world needs and I am so appreciative that you are including all of us in it! Keep rocking on Gary! It’s a new time and I think you hit it right on the nose with people trying to impress their friends with their wine knowledge. I’ve been having so much more fun since I’ve been watching your blogs and I can’t imagine having a day or two without your fun attitude to look forward to while drinking a good bottle.

    Gary, you are the best!
Screw off the snobs or pseudo snobs or whatever they are. You brought the real thunder. Sure, i follow also Wine Spectator and Parker, but you are something different and that’s what we need at this point in this rusty Wine industry. You are honest, fresh and fun. You brought some personal “touch” in this great vayniac community. I feel proud of you.
Keep up the great work. You/We are changing the wine world.

wow, calling Walla Walla over Napa! that’s a limb to walk out on! I wish I could have a little avi of just that portion of the ep. I’d like to send it to a few folks I know ;-)

Not sure Conan was the best place to cut your TV teeth, GV. Old School Johnny Carson minted this shtick more than a half-century ago. A late night show is an immediate consumable. All confection, zero calories.
Further, the distinction is not between selected nasty e-mails and your efforts. I’ve talked with numerous sommeliers around the country, all have been enthusiastic about your efforts, all are open to new approaches. The fact is that ‘changing the wine world’ is not exclusive to you. Many are straining on the same wheel.
    Not sure. Not sure.

YEAH GARY. Washington wines are kickin down Cali’s door.

How many of those critics have a top rated video podcast? Must be doing something right.

Washington wines were some of the first wines I ever drank and it’s nice to see them getting some respect!

Great show Gary, keep it up!

  155. August 8, 2007

    Hans AW

    Great show Gary.

I wish I could have been at some of those parties you mentioned. Also, I definitely have to try some more Walla Walla wines. I’ve been limited to Chateau Ste Michelle, Snoqualimie, and a few others. I’ll seek them out.

QOTD: Best dinner. Every dinner needs to fit it’s context, so I’ll give the context I’m dreaming of now.

Dinner outdoors with my wife and about six good friends. We have a view of the sea and the coastline at sunset on the southern Italian coast. It could be Vieste, Capri, Ravello, Taormina, Cefalu, Agrigento, or any number of places… it doesn’t really matter.
Primo: Spaghetti ai frutti di mare with some spicy red pepper mixed in. The wine is Fiano di Avellino.
Secondo: Grigliata mista with various types of fish and definitely calamari. wine: Vermentino
Cheese: a top notch pecorino Sardo
Finish off the meal with a chilled, crisp limoncello.

  159. August 8, 2007

    Gee

Greetings from Washington state, Gary. Walla Walla red wines (Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, and related blends) need to find more delicacy and balance; the fruit and alcohol is often too dominant. I want more finesse, more terroir, and a lower price for those better wines! Hard to find a good QPR. And hard to find a nice Cabernet that can develop with age. Like from everywhere else, there’s also a lot of mediocre wine from our state. As good as Napa? Yes, there are some excellent reds from eastern Washington, but they haven’t shown me reds that develop as well as the better from Napa. BTW, I favor the old world wines.

A good meal: amuse bouche of a couple lightly seared scallops with faint mandarin orange sauce, entre of eggs meurette with that lovely and rich beef-based sauce, main plat of thinly sliced duck breast with duck blood sauce, followed by simple salad of crisp limestone lettuce with a little endive and a mustard seed vinegar dressing, then cheese plate with maybe bleu d’Auvergne, well-aged Comté, and tomme aux noix. Finally, for dessert, a plate of vine-ripe strawberries arranged on a splash of creme anglaise. Of course, we’d have superb French bread during the meal. Wines? Champagne to start, perhaps 1998 Mumm. Then that Droughin 1966 Richeborg with the eggs meurette. Then a 1982 Cos d’Estournel with the duck. And with dessert, I’m going back to finish the Mumm.

    Are we hungry now?

    Gary,
More power to you. What I like is that you aren’t trying to be the snotty uptight “wine snob” but just showing everyone what you personally enjoy about wine…and that is what wine is all about, enjoying life.

QOTD: Any good friend or family memeber, medium/medium rare filet mignon, Altamura.

Hey Gary I could tell you were excited that your buddy Eric was there hahaa.

I’d like to call YOU out on this Gary… if you have time to look at these comments after you answer your thousand emails a day.. What’s YOUR answer to the question of the day.. I’d like to know (I’m sure everyone elses would too).

    QOTD:

    - Boboquivaris Restaurant’s (San Fran, CA) Bone-In Filet Mignon (with a bit of melted blue cheese on top)

    - TANTARA Pinot Noir from Bien Nacido Valley (You guys should cary this, it’s absolutely ridiculous).

  167. August 8, 2007

    MetalDave

    QOTD:

I’ll just go main course, because my ultimate dinner would be a 12-course extravaganza.

Venison tenterloin roasted rare with reduction of demi-glace, blackcurrants and raspberries. Dream wine with it? 1945 Mouton-Rothschild

Choosing one person would be tough. My wife, Lauren. My dad. My buddy Darshan. My boss, Eamonn. My colleague, Mark. Tough one.

I love the rants, definately don’t stop them.

Since you’re such a football man, why don’t you score wines based on a 16 game season. For example, a 100 point wine is a 16-0 season. So you’re 90 point could be a 12-4?

  168. August 8, 2007

    italianwinelover

Wow what a way to stand up for us…the Vanernation loves you!!!! Keep up the great time…wine is suppose to be fun and thats what you make it out to be!!!

QOTD: I would love to have dinner one more time with my father…he always loved Italian food, brought him back to his roots. Although he would drink my uncles wine I would rather share a bottle of Nebbiolo, and since I’m a vegetarian I would want to have a grilled salmon with a holadase sauce covered with asparagus!!! But if I had to pick a living dinner companion it would be you GV…what an awesome time we would have!!!

    ROCK ON GV!!!

QOTD = Caesar salad, a porterhouse for 2, creamed spinach, hash browns and a bottle of Caymus Special Select with my Father.

but rigatoni with meatballs, sausage, bracciole in home made tomato sauce and a bottle of Reserve Brunello with my Father in an absurdly close second.

    greentox

This was the best show ever. Not the most of anything but just balanced (Equal parts angry, knowledgeable, crazy, serious, loud, and soft spoken and all genuine) like a good wine.

QOTD – 4 course italian – Mussels with a Chablis or Muscadet; pork stuffed ravioli w/ blue cheese/walnut sauce and a pinot grigio; osso bucco on polenta w/ something authoritative from Piedmonte; pears poached in chianti for dessert. All with my wife, sister and brother-in-law.

Speaking of dessert wines, I had an Pellegrino Passito a couple months ago. People should seek it out if they’ve never had it – awesome.

  178. August 8, 2007

Great show today. Gotta love the Thundercats baby! Ultimate dinner would have to be a surf and turf style with jumbo prawns and beef tenderloin, maybe a port sauce or something. Although I haven’t yet had the opportunity to try many life-changing wines I think it would be a ‘61 Margaux or something to that effect, although that wouldn’t go with the prawns but whatever. D’Equem for dessert perhaps? And shared with my girlfriend and her father (maybe that seems weird but he got me into wine so I would have to include him).

  179. August 8, 2007

At first I thought you were tired from travelling when the intro was subdued. I must say that I always look forward to the next episode because it is fresh not canned. It is hard to generalize about your audience but just from the comments section I’d say there is a wide spectrum from the wine geeks to the hedonists in training. Another appealing aspect of your show is your honesty and integrity. I have great respect for anyone that is so good at what they do that they make it look easy.

Professor Emile Peynaud changed the winemaking in Bordeaux and started the modern movement towards quality. His protege Michel Rolland is often brought in to consult with the top producers in both hemispheres of the wine world. Robert Parker changed the wine world with his prolific tasting notes and 100 point scale. His ultimate advice is to trust your own palate. It is probably a sign of Gary’s influence when he starts to receive these slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Gary could make QPR the next big thing….

There was a lot going on visually in today’s show with the Thundercats and the wheels of cheese. I wish we had smellerama…

All of the food suggestions were so good that I could hardly pick my own QOTD. How many courses and wines am I allowed? Who will drive me home?

Let’s see, I’ll go Old World.

Taittingers Blanc de Blanc with Petrossian Caviar.

Crab Imperial with Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne

Rack of Lamb with Chateau Ausone

    Stilton fruit and Fonseca

Hines Triomphe Cognac (if wintertime) with a few walnuts to crack.

A Brazilian Samba dancer would be nice…I mean my wife of course!

GV, do me a favor, when the OAK MONSTER makes an appearence, give us a little more detail as to what form he is taking that day, i.e. butter, dairy, vanilla, just plain wood. Thanks Gary!!

QOTD: Too many to pick just one, however all include meat, carbs, good wine with family and close friends.

  187. August 8, 2007

    EricP

Was in Walla Walla for there Spring release and while there was a lot of very good wine, anything under $40 was generally mediocre. However many of the wineries were new. Also, since their last frost kill off, it seams at lot of the grapes used are coming from other Washington AVAs.
QOTD: How could anyone just choose one? Maybe I’m just to indecisive these days.

  188. August 8, 2007

    David McWherter

Hey Gary — I’ve been sitting on this a while, but you have to try a 2005 Borsao Red Table Wine (75% Garnacha/25% Tempranillo). I got it for $8 in Ohio, and I thought it was a great valued nestle-quick bomb you might enjoy. I don’t know if it’s available in your store though…

“Ruining it for everybody”??? Just who does that jerkoff think “everybody” is? People who hate FUN???

I look forward to WLTV every day in part because of your tremendous energy. It’s great to see someone so excited about wine. I’m excited about wine too! And as someone who’s relatively new to wine, I can say that you have played a big role in taking away the intimidation factor for me, and helped me to learn a lot about tasting.

I also LOVE that QPR plays a big role in most of the shows. Most of us can’t afford to drop $100 on wine for an everyday dinner. And that’s just fine. You can get great wines at good prices, and anyone who’d turn their nose up at a wine because simply because it’s not expensive is just a fool. (And you know what they say about a fool and his money, haha.)

Keep up the good work, Gary! And thanks for standing up for all the Vayniacs!

    *hugs*

QOTD: Ack, that would be hard to say! I love so many different kinds of food. Hmmm…. I’m not sure that this is my ultimate dinner, so much as my favorite dinner, haha.

Sushi and Dr. Loosen Riesling with my fiance, Ben.

  190. August 8, 2007

    Jayhitek

QOTD: Maybe a grilled piece of thick beef like a RibEye – Solid bottleS of wine, big and Red – And probably the boys, because I will laugh with them and get to eat like a glutton without the guilt from the wife.

  191. August 8, 2007

    Loved the intro.

QOTD: L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon tasting menu, wine pairings suggested by the sommelier, I would say with my wife but she hates this kind of food, so I have to find a real foodie to go with … I went to the L’Atelier in Las Vegas and had a GREAT meal by myself.

    The Detective

For what its worth GV – I don’t think you’re an imbecile and your palate is RIGHT ON! You’re what got me into wine and now I’ve got all my friends into it too. Food tastes better in The Vaynerchuk Era – I take time out like never before to sniff and swirl my food around. Your show is about more than wine – it offers unpretentious enjoyment of all the things life has to offer. And that is a profound thing.

Got to be kidding! One of the biggest markets for wine drinkers is the 21 to 40-ish crowd. The Wine Library is innovative, informative, entertaining and approachable. It’s the wine snobs who ruin it for everyone.

Too many favorites to choose from: Maybe Boston “Lobsta” and “steamas” with a bottle of bubbly, fresh bread on the side – wicked awesome!
    or
A good steak on the grill, with grilled veggies (summer squash, zuchinni) paired with 2002 Yalumba Signature Cab/Shiraz.

QOTD: Recently made my favorite dinner in recent memory with my wife and brother in law – NY strip steaks, beet and cheddar cheese risotto (unusual I know, but wonderful), buffalo mozzarella and yellow tomato salad, strawberry rhubarb pie for dessert. QOTD: A dinner with some french friends to celebrate the end of our PhD writing…and we were all glad this was over !
Starting with foie gras and Sauternes, Château Lamothe 1986. Then some seafood and a wine I don’t remember any more, followed by horse meat, mushroom sauce, potato gratin and an excellent 1996 Château Haut Marbuzet from St. Estephe. With the dessert, a Coteaux du Layon. I will remember this for a long time !

QOTD: We like to cook salmon (wrapped in foil) in oven, some peppers over it, squeeze lemon juice and put on top some parmessan melted in sweet cream (opposite of sour cream :) – it’s amazing! Then usually we take some new world (mostly Chile’s) Chardonnay, for example Montes Alpha, could be even Chile’s Sauvignon Blanc as they are not so “screaming” as NewZealand ones are. We – that’s me and my beloved.

    Loved this episode!
    Sic em Gary!
The main irritating thing with all the haters and poncey exclusive members-only wine nerds is….
How is it ever a bad thing that more people are becoming interested in wine and trying new things?
Does it really matter HOW they are becoming more interested?

I’m sure the wine makers don’t object to having more drinkers.
I’m sure the wine publications don’t object to having more subscribers.

    yadda yadda.

Love ya Gary, keep it comin!

Good going, Gary. You know, so many people have forgotten that drinking wine is fun! Oh well, I guess we should feel sorry for these wine snobs that think that all us Vayniacs are idiots. They’re really missing out…too bad, so sad…

Couldn’t agree with you more about your bouquet comment – the nose knows, fruit is waay overrated. Wish more wine today was like the type of wine made in the 60’s in Bordeaux and Burgundy!

Hope you and my son have a great trip to wine country this weekend – he can be an actor, too, as you know.

Gary – You haven’t turned me off yet. But I must say that I enjoyed your earlier episodes a lot more. They were more about the vino.

Take a self-critical look at the Slate article too. Still love you though.

Gary – try grilled cheese like Asiago with wine.
Cut into one inch squares – 1/2 inch thick. Crust the top and bottom and leave the inside soft. Then drink a nice red or a heavier white with it – You will be amazed at how good the wine will taste. The salt and fat from the cheese blends well and softens the tannins and acidity while briging out the flavors of the wine.

QOTD: 24 or 32 oz Angus Porterhouse with fettucine alfredo (with only the best parmesan), roasted asparagus and red peppers. With a full bodied red – Cabernet or Bordeaux blend / Or Alternatively Broiled 2 1/2 lb Maine Lobster with a parmesan / mushroom risotto, squash souffle. With a rich Chardonnay or Puilly Fuisse.

    Dear Gary,

Great show today — I never would have thought of the Basque goat cheese with the Pfalz wine — usually with German rieslings and weissburgunders I like an aged Gruyere (try it sometime, you’ll like it).

I’m baaaaack. Just landed from Brussels yesterday after a summer in Trier (mostly tasting Mosel and Saar wines). I have to say I’ve recently become a convert … not going to stop preaching about the Saar, but I’m loving the Pfalz wines. Even the Dornfelder Trocken and Dornfelder Roses!!

Thanks for taking a bit of time for them.

Looking forward to not having to follow you only via Twitter any longer. My girlfriend was getting pretty mad because every time we’d have dinner I’d get like 10 Twitters from you! ;o)

Kudos for taking wine bullies by the horns GV! Knowledge should serve to empower and elighten people instead of intimidate them. QOTD: There is no ‘ultimate’ food and wine experiences for me, but I do have many fond memories of some of special times with great people, food and wine. I continue to relish sharing wonderful food and wine with friends and family.

    Gary!
First time writer, new WLTV fan.
    LOOOONG time wine fan.
There are always desenters to ANY viewpoint. You – my man, have helped countless people explore the depths of their wine appreciation. That’s good enough for me. The youger folks can now begin to train their palate to appreciate the better things in life even if they can’t afford health insurance. First things first.

Simply stated- wine IS life. Without the frivolity and exploration of wine, life would be (more) of a singlular demention operation. I love the adventure my tastebuds take me when a nice one hits them. Food just makes it better.

QOTD- Coq au Vin. old world red and a slab of tart apple crisp with home made vanilla ice cream – with my wonderful wife (Nancy) and son Michael. That, or thin crust home made pizza with marinated tomatoes drizzled with olive oil, balsamic vinegar with artichoke hearts, green and black olives and asiago cheese. Same wine would suffice.
    Oh man, I gotta EAT!

Way to blast the wine snobs, Gary! For taking up for us, I owe you. I owe you anyway for the wristbands and all these great wine reviews, right? Where else can you get this kind of quality without paying for it? No place I know of. Thanks, Gary. You are truly awesome.

QOTD: 1. Steak (preferably a ribeye cooked Medium/Medium rare) with a side of garlic mashed potatoes and a bottle of Cabernet. 2. Grilled Halibut on a bed of risotto with a bottle of Egon Mueller Sharzoff 2004 Riesling.

QOTD: My ultimate dinner is with my wife (of course). It is a nice filet mignon grilled to perfection with crumbled blue cheese on top and a port wine reduction sauce. Grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes with goat cheese to finish it off. The wine? Gotta be a nice left-bank Bordeaux from one of my favorite Chateaus from a good vintage.

Gary that was awesome! I knew you were a wine genius, funny, had tons of enthusiasm and could deliver entertaining descriptions on the fly, but I never suspected you possessed such wisdom. Your opening tirade was spot on! We’re not from the same generation. I’m 20 years older than you. I never heard of Thunder Cats. I never could understand how anybody could get into pro wrestling (although I did watch G.L.O.W. but that was hormone related). Although my toys are not your toys I can appreciate what you do. You did a good job explaining those who want you to be serious. Wine is the arena where they get to do their version of Church Lady’s superior dance, and you’re ruining it by removing the intimidation.

Great episode and way to take on the haters. As the old bomber pilots said, “you know you’re over the target when you start taking flak!” In other words, it’s working, Gary! Keep it up!

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Ha ha ha ha ha… Rant for the ages. You are offically my hero, Gary. Its about time these stuffy snobs got taken down a peg. I think the two biggest factors in their negativity is that they want to sound intelligent about something, and they dont want their precious rare wines snatched up by the Vayniacs. Oh yes, we’re here to stay. And I promise to do some serious snatching…. That wasnt meant to sound dirty. Oh well. Fantastic episode. Lots of energy, and passion, and of course the great wine and cheese combo. You have to love that. Props to you and giving love to Walla Walla as well. WA is in the house!! QOTD: Braised pork cheek in red wine sauce ( I had that at a restaraunt here that KILLED) with a 1985 Bordeaux and vintage port with chocolate for dessert. I’ll take that with a special someone who will remain nameless until it actually happens.

QOTD: Are you kidding? The ulimate dinner is whatever happens to be on the plate when my sweetie and I are having a great time, and the wine is whatever goes with it. There’s no single, ultimate food or wine. Ultimate is about the company. Different kind of ultimate when the kids are there.

And yes, great rant, complete with Thunder Cat action! Love it!

    Andy Wileman

I am in love with Owen Roe. So I was glad to see you enjoyed it. I had this wine on the table at my wedding last August. This is one of my favorite wines of all time.

QOTD: The ultimate dinner always happens in retrospect. It comes unplanned on a Tuesday night, when you go out to dinner with your special one (or ones) and it just evolves into a night of glorious food, beer, wine, music and laughter.

    richardvinifera

Giving a score on wines doesn’t make Gary a hypocrite. He shouldn’t be forced to be a martyr for his pro-tasting notes view as many customers like points info. I’m sure my fellow Vayniacs have also found that Gary doesn’t provide a score to say that people should buy a wine based on that, just that the wine critics have tasted a lot of wine in the category at hand and many, many others, so they can often make informed recommendations if you are aware of their preferences.

After giving detailed tasting notes, points are a good concise way of summarising the overall quality. If people find that points are a good frame of reference, best to include them.
