I think you’ve just convinced me to go after the Southing I saw in a store nearby….damnit. Like I need more wine!
BTW, I had the Tintoralba Crianza yesterday which has got to be my all-time favorite red wine for under $20. Thank you for recommending it, and for having such great prices that I order from WL across the country! I really have no idea how your tastes compare to mine, but half the fun of watching your show is to hear what you have to say about a wine, grab a bottle of my own (months later) taste it, and then go back and watch the episode. It’s highly enlightening, and contributing much more to my wine education than anything else I could think of. Thanks again, Gary. Enjoy Napa!

GV – thanks for the underhand throw…I’m a pro submarine pitcher so that made the episode for me!

    Hello Gary,
My wife and I are first time viewers, we really liked your show and enthusiam for wine! We love the idea about a blind tasting party and decided to plan one so thanks for the suggestion. We tend to be budget wine drinkers, meaning we enjoy our wines but on the $15 and under list usually unless its special. We have a wine suggestion and we would like to know what you think about it, the name is ‘Menage a Trois’ from Folie a Deux. It is a table wine mix of merlot, cab & zin. We have really grown to like our three-some of me, her and a bottle. So if you get a chance please do a segement on budget wines and please if you have a chance try our fav and let us know what you think. Thanks!

Gary, I think you’d find it interesting that the “dirt” taste you often like might be geosmin.

    Gary,

When you poured the TEN and dumped it as a rinse, I audibly gasped, which entertained my kids (who were watching a terrible movie while I was watching WLTV with headphones). I often tell myself, “wow,” when you rinse with expensive wines, but this was Pinot, for God’s sake! :-) .

I’m sad to say….(sniffy-sniff)….I started the South Beach diet on Tue., and I haven’t had a drop since….no vino for Trish….it’s killing me…..

QOTD: I’ll be popping a chardonnay from Goose Ridge.

I was also over in Walla Walls this afternoon tasting some wine. I mentioned Wine Library TV at Seven Hills winery and the woman behind the counter mentioned I was the second person today to mention the the program. She’s going to be checking you out. Keep spreading the word.

    Hi Gary,

    I’m a lurker, but I’m coming clean.

I generally like old world reds with more earth than fruit. This weekend, however, I had a Peter Mondavi Family Charles Krug, Yountsville cab. For me, it brought the thunder. Big fruit, but bigger thunder. Oak Monster was out eating skittles with someone else.

What say you about the Peter Mondavi wines and the Yountsville terroir?

:He stands up and slightly bows his head: Hello everyone, I am BoBo & I am a lurker. greetings ya’ll I’ve been watching for the past 3 or 4 weeks now just sitting here minding my own bees wax. I never thought what I had to say really needed to be heard but you called me out so here I am. I have greatly enjoyed watching your show no matter what others might think of your style. You have charisma and we love to see it. Keep teaching me a little about wine & I’ll keep tuning in. Awesome job my friend.

QOTD: This weekend it’s all about a very very very late harvest chenin blanc from a local winery (Terra Blanca) here in southeastern Washington. It is bringing the thunder.

It’s unfathomable that you do these shows on one take, it looks so fluid it’s hard to believe these things aren’t scripted down to the last second. You truly are bringing the thunder in the perfect storm sort of way.

However, the only thing more upsetting with you equating the deer quote with strawberries and pepper is that in 160-odd (emphasis on odd) comments none of these so-called Vayniacs corrected you: “Hit a deer on the road…let it fall down…. throw a bunch of cherries on it….” remember? You based a tee shirt on it and someone even documented it in a video.

Speaking of which TimF and the Missus get to spend a weekend in Napa with GV and Liz and all I got was having to buy 7 gosh darned tshirts?

Not to be ungracious, I’m as equally Jet’s green with envy as I am confident the Vaynernation got it right, have a great weekend guys!

I’m sure I don’t need to remind you I have a ticket to Tampa burning a hole in my pocket (and TampaSteve doesn’t strike me as the type of guy one would want to cross). If begging and pleading doesn’t work it’s not beneath me to resot to threats of physical violence as long as someone else is the inflictor (and more importantly the inflictee).

“Pull it, pull it” .. and no concerns about failing eyesight? I won’t even go down the four fingers up the punt road.

QOTD : I’m just polished off the remnants of a 2003 Pieve del Escovo Piovano (can’t you tell?) that is nothing short of kicka$$ at $7. I have to tell you I’m not listening to your sorry butt on this, you rated it an 88+ when it’s clearly a 89-, I call BS. I’m now onto a 2005 Terlato & Chapoutier lieu de Malakoff that proves to be the beginning of a lovely evening once it brathes away the heat.

Temps are hitting close to triple digits around here. I’ll be cooling down with a 2005 Nori Albariño

QOTD: We’re taking a bottle of Faust Cab, 2004 to a wedding party tonight (Sat.), but not sure what we’ll actually drink. Tomorrow we’ll open a bottle of Gilbert Gruet Grand Reserve Methode Champenoise gearing up for my birthday.

Glad to see you still like the iPhone. Must come in handy when negotiating the subway. You’ll have to demo the features.

I’m new to WLTV, and I absolutely love it! This is completely fantastic! I’m totally jealous that you get to spend the weekend in San Francisco; it’s an amazing city.

Great show! Tasting band-aids?!? Keep up on the tetanus shots, please!

QOTD: Tried Chateau Saint-Sulpice Bordeaux 2004 – not too impressed. Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2005, for tonight. Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay 2005 for tomorrow (from one of your past episodes).

Got lucky and came across a bottle of the Sea Smoke Southing the other day. Grabbed it quickly as I knew it was tough to find. I have not been into the PN’s either until I spent a few days in the Big Sur area tasting some from Santa Rita Hills and Santa Lucia Highlands.

QOTD: Kicked off the weekend Thursday night with a Belle Glos Pinot Noir – Taylor Lane. Really good. Thought tonight would be Rosenblum Zin Carla’s Vineyard to go with some pizza but a friend stood me up so I’ll end up popping whatever goes with what I’m eating.

Have a good weekend everyone and thank GV for sharing the knowledge and excitement.

Loved the show and Sea Smoke. How do you compare (or do you) Sea Smoke to Surh Luchter…I love wine…I’d love to see a show on blends like from Rudd Priority Red, etc. I’m also a big Chard fan..so there you have it.

Excellent show, GV, as always! I joined the Sea Smoke mailing list about 2 years ago and have been shipped a minimum allotment of the 2004 and 2005 vintages. Bottle shock is certainly a concern, so I will wait at least 1 or 2 months after shipment to pop any of my new 2005s. I’m definitely cellaring my rare bottles of Ten for 7 to 10 years, and I anticipate that their nose will develop exquisitely into various bouquets of perfume. I have not been able, however, to resist my 2004 Botellas and Southings. By the way, I believe that the label “Southing” is pronounced like “Sow” as in “South” because the Southing grapes are grown on the south-facing Santa Rita Hills. From my experience, the 2004 Botellas are drinkable now and for the next 5 years. The 2004 Southings, however, have always been “closed” just after popping a bottle, but they open up beautifully after decanting an hour or so. I would be surprised if the young 2005 Southings and Tens didn’t need to be properly decanted for maximum enjoyment. In fact, the Sea Smoke website (http://www.seasmokecellars.com/) recommends it.
