Nice episode. I´ve completely changed my mind on Rhone the last year and a 03 Guigal Saint Joseph Vigne de l´Hospice was the wine that did it.

QotD : I most often do. The last wine I had with some Gary V. was 05 Tim Adams Semillion. To young, oaky and disjointed. Not like you at all :)

If we share some vino in the city you´ll def. get my Thundercats. And how about that link ?

Also, I’m very impressed by Fairview’s Goat Roti as a low-cost alternative to genuine Cote Rotie (which is even more expensive here in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.) Nice bacon fat action!

QOTD: I usually enjoy a nice cold one after work, which is when the newest eps. of WLTV are available, so I don’t normally drink wine while watching. Though it has happened from time to time. I normally drink wine from dinner-time on, which is usually around 8:00 for me.

Welcome back, Gman, the “family” missed you as well.

Still trying to come up with something unique for an intro, but I’m good for it, eventually. Better I owe it to you than cheat you out of it.

However, I can’t really focus when distracted by the sweat running down my wrist, ahem.

Brandon M., sounds like you better get used to the Thundercats.

I also jumped on an auction of Thundercats, won it but the seller is traveling so it may be awhile until you see them. I sent you the link in case the seller is swallowed by a sink hole or something….. oh joy, more email! Better I owe them it you than cheat you out of it

Day late and a dollar short on the advise to Jen, Vayner, well at least she got an In-and-out out of the deal.

QOTD: Why, of course, do you think I post such astutue thought provoking comments without an assist? (Better I owe it to you than cheat you out of it)

Finally a foray into the great white north, let me know if you need any help getting something set up….we hope to see you on Sept 29th as well in Buffalo!
QOTD – As often as I can…I usually watch when I get home so it gives me an excuse to pop a bottle.

  43. August 15, 2007

    Brendan McGuigan

Really interesting episode, Gary. I did a blind Syrah tasting for some friends a few weeks ago, and we did both the 2003 Brune et Blonde from Guigal, as well as his St. Joseph’s of the same year. They were a great deal at Wine Library, but alas, the Brune et Blonde had not survived. I left it in anyway, so people could see what a wine gone bad tasted like, and in the end it placed near the bottom of our rankings. People were awfully surprised that the $20 St. Joseph’s outperformed it so much. Seeing this really makes me wish we had been able to see the Cote Rotie really shining through. Ah well, next time.

QOTD: I’ve never drunk wine while watching WLTV, mostly because I don’t like sitting in front of my computer while drinking. Maybe someday.

  44. August 15, 2007

    Andy

I tried e-mailing you about your visit to Los Angeles, but I got the away auto-response. Maybe commenting will be more effective.

They’ll open anything as long as you order two glasses and they charge wine store prices, so it’s the polar opposite of Bin 8945. They don’t have much in the way of food, but there’s plenty of places to grab a bite in walking distance. Good public parking too.

QOTD: I usually watch WLTV in the afternoon while I working, so I do not imbibe along the show.

Great episode, and coincidence of coincidences, I had the 2003 Brune et Blonde the other day, and agreed with Gary 100%. Anyone in the Boston area, Legal Sea Foods carries the 2003 Brune et Blonde on their list for $59. That’s right, $59. You’re all welcome.

Never have tried Cote Rotie but I can seek out the lesser priced one to start!! all it takes is one to get you hooked!

QOTD: 75% of the time I open a bottle, but its not as good as what you try. Just having a Petit Bistro Pinot Noir now. Smooth but nothing fancy!

Will start scouring the area for Thundercats!!!!

GV: If you come to Canada, make sure you come to Montreal. Forget those other Canadian cities, Montreal is where it’s at for fooding, copious wine consumption, and everything else worth doing. QOTD: Amazingly, no – It’s usually a dry run here, with juice consumption served before bed as a nightcap while watching “The Daily Show” or whatever else is on the tube (Conan re-runs?….).

Great and informative show! Thanks for the 411 on Cote Rotie.

Have family in Idaho – you’ll have to mention which city you’ll be in… there are only about two to choose from in that state!

    Bossman

I almost forgot my QOTD for you:

I saw Tim’s write up and pics from the Napa trip in the forums (GV – way to do a Vayniac right, Tom F – way to represent!) notable was the most curious absence of Lizzie in the pics, as such, please chose below:

    1) Exceedingly camera shy
    2) A closet vampire (did she make a cameo in the intro under the veil of darkness?)
    3) In the witness protection program as a material witness to an incident involving the CHP and an un-named Jet’s loving, champagne sippin’, wine-rating, Thundercat-begging, net-loving, wine vlogging dude who is changing the wine world with his little itty bit (or something like that).
    4) All of the above

  60. August 15, 2007

    Corvette Tony

Great show! I’ll be picking up a couple bottles of the Guigal with my next order.

QOTD: I’ll have wine about 50% of the time while watching. Today it happens to be Sharpshooter cab.

  61. August 15, 2007

One more query, Tom F. instead of Tim F. in my last post?

    A)Sour grapes Freudian slip
B)”O” and “I” are adjacent to each other on the keyboard(and we all know what they say about big fingers)
    C)Laptop keyboard
D)Sun was in my eyes and I tripped over a rock

    Thanks for playing.

    Gary,
I just discovered WLTV last week while vacationing in Napa and am absolutely delighted with your videos and insight. I am a relative newcomer to wine, still trying to taste enough to even know what it is that I like or dislike; your videos have demystified for me the things I’ve read but only partially understood in WS and similar magazines. Yesterday I watched the two episodes of your visit to Bordeaux and found them fascinating and especially informative. I am looking forward to future episodes!
    Thanks,
    -j

FYI: per wikipedia, “On June 5, 2007 it was announced that Warner Bros. have optioned the rights to make a CGI animated feature film based on the ThunderCats cartoon. It will be an origin story expanding on the events of the first episode.[1]” Better buy your dolls before the market bumps.

A Cote Rotie episode, I have been waiting for this since the start of WLTV!! I have spent $50 plus on wines, so it is not the cost, but for some reason have just never pulled the trigger on a Cote Rotie. I am now motivated to try one.

QOTD: not normally, I tend to watch stop-and-go while I am putting the kids to bed

  76. August 15, 2007

Great show on an interesting region.

QOTD: Almost always and today I was trying your recently reviewed Four Vines “Naked” Chard. For 8 bones, it can’t be beat.

Can we get the gravatars back?

    Cheers

  77. August 15, 2007

    Marc

QOTD: Usually not. I usually watch WLTV while eating one of my two-to-three dinners for the night (I’m trying to put on some weight). But maybe 10 percent of the time I’ll be having a glass with that dinner.

  78. August 15, 2007

    Marc

Oh yeah, while you’re getting ready for a trip to Idaho, how about going to the other state that starts with “I”? We’ve got our own Iowa grapes and Iowa wines; I wonder what you’d think (to be honest, I’m not a fan in general, but you might be).

  79. August 15, 2007

3rd – Come to Buffalo, go to Ontario and I am sure we will find a way to convene a quorum of Vayniacs. Cleveland will be represented.

    Gary, Gary, Gary …

I ALWAYS drink wine while watching WLTV. I try to make it the same region as well. PLEEEEEEASE do more advance notice of wines so we can taste them with you!!!

On today’s show… Shame on you for stacking the deck in Guigal’s favor by making it the only 2003 in the group — tsk, tsk. I agree with your scoring of it, by the way, but the others might have shown better in ‘03, too. Not only is it a better year; but it’s got a year of age on them as well.

Also, sorry if I’m complaining, you missed a great opp by not explaining Brune et Blonde.

Thanks for a great show — true to my name, I’m an old world fan and the Rhone seems to be the place that’s holding on to terroir better than most.

How about a Graves (red, of course) show?

QOTD – almost always. I eat my dinner, drink my wine and watch Gary V. One of the best 30-minute segments of my day!

  101. August 15, 2007

    Grapedigger

    Cote Rotie rocks!!

I watch WLTV late in the evening (10-11 PM), so mostly I drink my wine before that…
    Cheers..

A wild boar! Nice. Yum gamy! Coming to Boise huh. Wish I could make it there but it’s like a 6hr drive! Enjoy Idaho G!

Yes, let’s hope so. I seem to have ended up with the Jets DST in my draft, plus this blond fella … Penningford? Pennebaker? What’s his name again?

I hate it when you really love a wine like that Guigal, because I know it’ll be all gone by the time I get around to watching the show.

That last wine didn’t look too blanc to me.

I’ve had Goat-Roti, but not Cote-Rotie. I have, however, had Idaho riesling. Yes, it smelled like potatoes. Yes, it was better than I expected.

QOD: yes. Not ALWAYS, but yes. In fact, right now I’m enjoying goat cheese pizza with this:

    http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=29830

    I can’t believe it’s not Gamay!

Love that stinky cheese and old world wines. What’s with the new sign off? Sounds confrontational. What happened to “a little bit of me”?

  106. August 15, 2007

    JamesN.

QOTD; if my schedule allows it, I try to have a glass of wine while watching WLTV. Tonight I am drinking the Nimbus Sauv. Blanc that you reccomended with inexpensive goat cheese & a mixture of fresh herbs from the garden. The rosemary thyme and basil are good with the wine, but the dill & sage are good with the cheese, but they make the wine bitter. I am still training my palate, I have found some winners some losers, but mostly I am having fun.

I’d be honored to host a Sunday afternoon tasting for the Vayniacs at my place in LA!!! Can we make it happen?

QOTD: Usually I’m watching at work, but if I can wait until I get home then I’ve got a glass next to me for sure. Lately it’s been the outstanding QPR T. Solomon Wellborn Pinot Noir (second label from Tantara) that I bought a case of for $17/bottle. The bouquet is EXPLOSIVE! It would be a Gary V fave for sure.

  108. August 15, 2007

    wannaBconnoisseur

I’ve never had a Cote-Rotie, but I’ve been wanting to, may have to splurge on the Guigal.

Q – Usually drinking something when I watch in the evening, not always wine though, sometimes a cocktail or beer.

  109. August 15, 2007

    monkuboy

QOTD: I usually watch WLTV after dinner and thus after wine. But I drink one Kirkland bottled water while I watch and I find myself chewing and rolling the water around in my mouth in synch with the tastings. The advantage I have is I don’t have to spit it out.

  110. August 15, 2007

    BobMac

QOTD: I don’t think I’ve ever actually had any wine while I’m watching the show. Sad.

  111. August 15, 2007

    Abby

Gotta say I’m a new addict. Love ya love the show!

QOTD: This is my second show. First show, it was a mixed drink. Tonight, a syrah. Both times, I got off work and just NEEDED to sit down and have a GOOD laugh. DONE! I’m feeling a routine coming on.

    Thanks a ton!
    Abby

As a proud disciple of the church of Vaynerchuk it would be an honor to meet up in LA! Keep us posted about where and when. Great show today Gary! Way to bring the thunder!

    Jerry the 2THDR

QOTD: I drink wine before and during my evening meal. Then I watch TV and fall asleep. When I wake up (9-10PM) I go the the computer for e-mails and news. I get to WLTV between 11 and 12 and drink only water to stay alert for your gems of wisdom. Jerry the 2THDR

  114. August 16, 2007

    Robin

QOTD: Only if I watch right after dinner. Not that often.

Looking forward to Cote Roties. I want to know what liquid bacon fat tastes like.

  115. August 16, 2007

    Mudd

    QOTD: Sure, sometimes.

Hey Gary, I too am a yard sale/auction/estate sale guy. I’m curious to know what’s your biggest find at a sale? Not necessarily the craziest thing but biggest value?

  116. August 16, 2007

    ChrisR

Thanks for mentioning the good and bad vintages for the Cote Roties, you should keep doing it on the days your do single varietals. As always, you rock! Got my bottles for the TASTE-ALONG next week, so you’ll have at least one Arizonan (and a couple of his buddies) watchin’ along and tastin’ along!!

  117. August 16, 2007

    Mason

I am going to go this weekend and look for some of these wines in town. There are a couple of stores in town that should carry at least one of them.

QOTD: I don’t usually drink wine while I watch, because I watch very late at night, and then go straight to bed. Not much time to devote to the bottle.

  118. August 16, 2007

    Claudio

Hey Gary! Wonderful to see the Cote Rotie show!

You recommended the Le Gallet Blanc to me just before the April Chicago party and it rocked my Cote Rotie snob friends!

On the Guigal 2003 Cote Rotie – glad I ordered a case from you earlier in June and it’s contently cushioned in your storage for shipping this fall!

Cheers and kudos to a great episode!

QOD – I rarely drink wine while watching WLTV.

    Cheers!

LA Sat or Sunday? My girlfriend and I would like to be part of a get together if one happens!

Thanks for the Cote Rotie! awesome!
QOTD: 50% of the time, I’ll be drinking wine with WLTV. MOST 0f the time, I’m pulling out my credit card instead!

  121. August 16, 2007

    MarkoftheGrape

First time post! Bit ashamed, as I’ve been watching for like 6 months now…

QOTD – Yep, its a habit I started months ago. I start watching 1/2 hour before bed, and have a glass of wine. I rarely drink wine with meals, prefer to just concentrate on the wine alone – unless its a steak, then pairing it with a nice Cabernet can bring tears to my eyes :)

  122. August 16, 2007

    flippy

QOTD: Almost all the time… right now trying the Red Heads 2005 “Yard Dog” Petit Verdot/Merlot/Cab from S.E. Australia. 15.0% alcohol… it burns! It’s a dark one, and the nose is pretty nice, but the alcohol pretty much eviscerates the fruit.

I’m interested to see what you’d think on wines from us Canadians…

  123. August 16, 2007

G- You hate my Niners because they know how to beat your Jets asses. You better watch the smack on SF teams, otherwise someone might replace your Araujo with Two Buck the next time you’re hanging near the Bay.

  126. August 16, 2007

Thanks for the shout out… though it kinda made me sad :( But, nonetheless… Good to have you back.
QOTD: Yes, 80% of the time.

  127. August 16, 2007

    Shinmaryuu

Hey Gary. I noticed as of late you have been torn on the whole 89 vs 90 etc point issue. Well with what you bring across in the show maybe a simpler system would be a good idea. More of a way to say ok this is worth a try or this taste like donkey pee more than 86 points which no one outside of the “wine world” really could wrap there head around. “What makes an 86 better than an 85 and should i buy it?”

I purpose a simple 5 star rating system that would still allow you to offer your opinion on purchase or not well at the same time giving the viewers room to make there own opinion on the wine itself. Here is a break down WLTV style :) .

1 Star: Pay someone on the street to take the bottle from you.
2 Stars: You’d be better off drinking Kool-aid but it might get you a buzz.
3 Stars: Drinkable but not the girl you want to take to the prom.
4 Stars: Good buy. Interesting taste at a good price.
5 Stars: Run over your grandma, sell your kidney, break the piggy, and buy this wine!

  128. August 16, 2007

    Steve-o

great show…I love learning about specific regions.

QOTD: hell yes i do…I just started work in the tasting room of a winery and we get to bring home half empty bottles at the end of the night. im swimming in the stuff!

  129. August 16, 2007

    vibemore

QOTD: Yes…not only wine, but sometimes cheese too. I tried doing the treadmill with WLTV on the ipod and it didn’t work. I just wanted to stop running.

My 2 cents on the point system = The industry standard…for better or worse…is the 100 point system. So what. Just point everybody to corkd.com. When you have your own say (as I do with my on FREE corkd.com account) in what is or is not 100 points there is a level playing field. The problem IS NOT the 100 point system. The problem IS that too many people are afraid to say what is or is not 100 points on their own. Or in Vayniac language…too many people are afraid to “trust their own palate”.

And a big congrats on Revis. (Go Seahawks.)

  130. August 16, 2007

Great Episode Gary! Cote Rotie, a “profound wine”.
QOTD: Yes, usually, i watch the show after dinner, so i’m relaxed watching you while sipping a vintage port or Tokaji, depending of what kind of wine i drank that day.

  131. August 16, 2007

    OldVinesJim

Glad to see a Cote Rotie show today. I’m attending a tasting at the Texas Sommelier Conference this weekend that will focus on the Rhone, and I don’t know much about Northern Rhone wines.

QOTD: Rarely. Like several others, I usually don’t watch WLTV until quite late (midnight or later), so I’ve already had my glass or two for the night.

  132. August 16, 2007

Love the show. Just thought I would let you know we have sherbet dip in the UK.

QOTD: I only drink along with Gary when I have his two or four pack (ordered mine from two episodes ago.. pretty excited to taste along again).

Anyone else had a problem viewing Jenn P’s Virgin to expensive wine video? says “video not found”?

  135. August 16, 2007

i love cote-rotie. was turned on to the northern rhone after experimenting with several 03 st josephs and crozes-hermitages.

QOD: yes, if i get home early enough to catch the show in the PM, say about 33%-50% of the time.

Question 1 for GV: What do you do with all the answers to the QOTDs?
Question 2 for GV: Where did Pierre Rovani end up? He was my fave of the WA staff (partic re pinots). Miss his perspective on the 05s.

A trip to Canada, eh? :-) WOOHOOO! It would be awesome to have you here! Bring the Thunder Show to the Niagara region! :-) There are some awesome wineries around the Beamsville Bench, Niagara on the Lake, and Vineland. A couple suggestions: Thirty Bench (awesome riesling); Stratus; Malivoire; Fielding Estate (one of my personal favorites); Tawse; and Inniskillin (for icewines!)

QOTD: Generally, no. I usually watch WLTV either on my iPod or in the morning while getting ready to start my day.

  138. August 16, 2007

    Capt M

Great show. I have no experience with Cote Rotie that I can recall. QOTD: I used to, once in a while. It’s actually very pleasant to drink wine while watching WLTV. Sometimes WLTV lights up my craving for wine. Maybe I’ll watch the next episode with a glass in hand. I’m also expecting the Friday, Aug 24 ep. I didn’t buy the wines, but Antonio Touriño did, and we’re going to get together for this.

  139. August 16, 2007

nice show man. I have only tasted a couple Cote Rotie’s at tasting events, would love to have one with a big steak dinner. Maybe the next wine dinner I have with my friends I’ll suggest it.

QOTD: typically no wine while watching wltv, usually watch at work either in the morning like today or in the afternoon, there is the rare occascion I am at home sipping some wine after while watching.

  140. August 16, 2007

Sadly I don not drink wine while I watch because I am usually stuck at work while I watch the podcast. If ever I am allowed to start drinking wine at work you can be sure I will make it happen!!!

Well 50% of the time I’ll be having some vino while watching (I get a little inspired) but days like today I’m watching the show in the am I have to have COFFEE! Love Cote Rotie. I just may have to grab that Guigal since I was considering buying it last month. Great show.

Wine with Wine Library TV??? Horrors no, I have to keep my focus utterly and completely sharp when watching your episodes, Gair. In fact, first I take a little nap, then I drink a Red Bull or a red eye from Starbucks, then I sequester myself into my office, take the phone off the hook, turn off the cell phone, settle in, and then just take it all in. It’s therapy.

My oldest daughter was married on July 7, 2007 (777). We included the Thudercats theme song in our father-daughter dance medley. The choice has nothing to do with WLTV, but I thought this crowd might appreciate it.

  160. August 16, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

No, never drink whle watching as I am at work always when I watch during my lunch breaks. I love Cote Rotie but I was wondering on the 2004. Don’t Cote Rotie’s like CdP go through dumb phases. That has been my experience with all Rhone reds that there is a 3-4 year dumb phase though the Guigal and the Villard didn’t show that. I haven’t been a great fan of Guigal as they seem to have gotten all new world lately and seem to lose the Cote Rotie Terroir. Villard has been consistently good but the price has been inching up steadily.

Just how drunk was the opening crew?

  161. August 16, 2007

    mas

Love Cote-Rotie Gary, I should buy more. I’ve been finding “values” (read: less expensive than Cote-Rotie) in Hermitage lately, but both are kind of up there. For me though, this is how Syrah should be done. I like some Cali versions and some Australian wines that aren’t too over the top, but there always seems to be more complexity in the Cote-Rotie.

    QOTD: Sometimes -

QOTD: I always watch at work during lunch, as do many of the peeps here, so the stronest thing I have is an iced tea (of course, when I eat out, I often hit the local brewpub for some sneaky peaky lunchtime beer).

I have become smitten with Cote du Rhone reds, and want to learn more about Rhone area.

    Thanks Gary for enlightening me….

  164. August 16, 2007

    Vinsant

Any mention of the number 33 without saying Tony Dorsett is just plain wrong. Love the Rhone and CDP. Need to try more of the nothern parts. Some of WA Syrah’s (Cayuse and Robert Karl) are co-fermented with Viognier and they are just plain yummy. Usually do not drink while viewing, too distracting. Careful in Idaho, some parts are scarier than the Oak Monster!

  165. August 16, 2007

There are some really cool little vineyards down in the Niagara region, if you wanted to try a nice bottle from BC, Lake Breeze Pinot Blanc is worth seeking out.

    Orion Slayer

Côte-Rôtie, awesome show. I went to a tasting last October where the theme was Rhone wines, only no of us brought a northern Rhone! I’ve been wanting to try one ever since.

QOTD: I usually watch WLTV at work and the they have a strict no drinking policy. They have a “working while you’re at work” policy, but it’s not as strict.

(To eBay to get a Thundrcat.)

QOTD: no, not usually. I’m usually watching it on my ipod (or now iphone) on the train, or while doing something else. One of these days I’ll have to try it. Even if its buying a bottle from a past episode, and re-watching the episode to see if I can figure out what you are talking about…

  172. August 16, 2007

    Karl Laczko

Thundercats? – OK, whatever keeps you happy. Jets?, if you must, but how about giving us non-NFL people something to insult you about, pick an English Premiership (soccer) team to “support” as well.

Mushed trout and Philadelphia cheese, sorry, you’re not selling it to me.

QOTD – Generally no, although I have a cold at the moment and a Marsala is helping me get through the evening.

Dude, if you seriously want to get going with LJN Thundercats, you’re going to be VERY busy. Collections might not just include loose figures but also carded and rare examples plus prototypes, original artwork, proofing samples, engineering schematics . . . you name it. Vintage toy collecting can be as complex and amazing as wine collecting! Check out this rare carded example:

i’ll keep my eye open for any thundercats. QOTD: that would be frowned upon since I watch right at the end of school. I teach my last class of Geometry and then as soon as they file out the door I’m watchin the show. Have fun on your trips.

    GV,
How would you compare the Aussie Shiraz-Viognier blends to the Cote Rotie’s?
    Certainly some better price points.
How do the flavors compare ? How about the cellaring time? QPR ?
I think the Vayniacs would all be interested to here about the comparison.

QOTD – Usually watch over lunch, so generally no vino. However, if I watch with the wife
after dinner, we have been know to finish off the dinner bottle while watching WLTV

    Hi Gary!
    Very interesting episode
    In september issue Decanter(UK edition)calls the 2005 Rhone’s vintage of a lifetime
    John Livingstone-Leatmonth in mentioned article finds 2001, 1999, 1990, 1989, 1985 as a excelent and 1998, 1995, 1988, 1983 and1982 as a very good once; nothing about 2003
QOTD: very often; right now 2003 Les Chevaliers Des Templiers Saint-Julien

Great episode. I have had no Cote Rotie but I notice alot more Sirah Viogneir blends out there and have tried a few and loved them. I’ll for sure splurge on a Cote soon.QOTD I am right now and would say that 60% of the time I do drink wine while watching. Thanks GV and WLTV crew.

Hey GV, looking forward to trying the Cote Rotie. I’ve heard so much about it. What’s the difference between Cote Rotie and Cotes du Rhone – mainly location? “Cote” means hillside or slope, right? So it’s just a different hilly area?

Yeah, I like a little imbibation (is that a word?) when I’m watching me daily dose of WLTV. It doesn’t usually match what you’re drinking, although that would be fun. You might be talking about Sancerre, and I’m drinking a Marquis Philips Shiraz for example. Still, it makes it more fun.

I almost never drink wine while watching WLTV. Sometimes I do have my morning tea while I watch, however. It would be odd to watch Gary taste one wine while drinking another. That would amount to multi-tasking, which isn’t my strength.

    RieslingRon

Nice show Gary. I especially like the educational area information on the wines and vintners.

QOTD: No, but that’s not to say that it’s not a good idea

QOTD: Tend to drink when watching at home, but mostly I catch you during work, and although I would love to have a glass before heading to court, don’t think the judges would dig it…..or maybe they would as some seem to have knocked back a few themselves before taking the bench…

Love the Rhone, North or South don’t care all good stuff

  190. August 16, 2007

    Mr. Cabernet

QOTD: No, I’m usually at work. But I’m looking forward to the group tasting coming up–I’ve got my two pack.

OT: Don’t drip wine onto the floor. It serves no purpose but to get a cheap laugh.

  191. August 16, 2007

    Marc Mc

Most of the time. Tonight its Marquis Phillips SE Austrailia Shiraz. No heat, good fruit with a lot of balance.

Today I’m drinking beer while watching WLTV, but we’re a day behind and I think my wife is about to join you in some Fume Blanc while we watch tomorrow’s episode. We had the Mondavi Private Selection Fume Blanc last night, so good timing Gary.

You really turned me on to the Cote Rotie, it is next on my list.

QOTD: Some times, most of the time I am watching WLTV on my iPod on the commuter bus ride home. The last few days the ride has seemed longer with out a show, glad to have you back.

  198. August 16, 2007

    wallace

Loved the fun facts at the start of the show. “Lead me to the well” Gary! good stuff. keep it up. look forward to trying out some cote roti eventually.
QOD; I usually have wine and maybe a snack while watching WLTV. unless it’s 07 in morning i usually pour myself a glass and get set up to watch the show.

It’s a relief to have you back… I was starting to get the shakes. Cote-Rotie is the “roasted slope” and pictures of it show a rugged steep terrain with old stone walls. It lies on the right bank of the Rhone river in the northern end of the Rhone region. A large colorful map that pulled down from the ceiling would be an awesome prop but might be too pedantic. The slope has two parts with different soils. The Cote Brune is brownish, rich in clay and has quite a bit of iron oxide. The Cote Blonde has a lighter color combining chalk with clay. The Brune increases its intensity with age and the Blonde is more assertive young and then fades with age. The Viognier is grown together with the Syrah and blended to round out the flavor and bouquet. Due to the steep terrain the harvesting must be done by goats….

I’m imbibing some southern Rhone Valley blend from the Costieres de Nimes called Chateau L’Ermitage. (at $12 a poor man’s Hermitage) It’s medium bodied with a %40 Syrah, %40 Grenache and 20% Mourvedre. 12.5% alch. the vigneron is Jerome Castillon ages this wine in Oak tanks for nine months. This adds a vanilla element to the berries with a touch of Cinnamon. It’s easy to drink and doesn’t have any fatal flaws and deserves an 87 IMHO. I’ll surely try his white blend next.

Our beloved Redskins are retooling the defense which should take some pressure off our sophomore quarterback Jason Campbell. The Giants lost some of their mainstays and might be ripe for picking. The Eagles always are our nemesis and Dallas has a new coach. Anything could happen…Best of luck to your sons of Namath.

Guys, PLEASE learn the difference between the plural and the possessive – it’s not “cabernet’s”, and in this episode, it’s not “video’s”, but PLURAL “videos”

    Dave-from-Katonah

Hey Gary! I’m Baaaaack!! Long time no post, but Cote Rotie caught my eye. Great show. I love the 2003 Giugal I had back on Memorial Day. My TN were identical to yours with the great nose – probably due to the Viognier – and the truest syrah flavor of black raspberry and choclate covered cherries!! Totally worth 50bones!! My last bottle will never last, so I may have to buy another 2 bottles soon! I love Rhone syrah, but if you pump it on WLTV aren’t you worried the price will jump thru the roof like Oregon Pinot Noir after Sideways???? How about the less expensive St Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage? What is your other favorite N Rhone syrah producer, other than in Cote Rotie?
QOTD – every chance I get!
Question for you – you still intersted in coming up here to Katonah for a wine tasting dinner after my daughter’s bat mitzvah mishap?? We have a wine tasting group and you could be the guest taster…of a menu that we could work out. What do you think?

  208. August 17, 2007

QOTD: Sometimes i do – depends on when/where i’m watching. I had this great Carmenere tonight….

Cotes du Rhone is fabulous in 2003, so heads up for that. Question of the day: of course I always drink wine with Winelibrary-TV ;-) Tonight a simple 1996 Bordeaux. Aged well, but I am running out of them.

  217. August 17, 2007

    vivaitalia

I’ve been dying to try some cote-rotie for a long time know. The price just kind of holds be back. Now at least I have some guidelines to use. It’s so weird to me that syrah can be so earthy and austere in the rhone, and make these nuclear fruit bombs in Australia. I know you’re probably freaking out with the vikings rolling the jets tonight.

  218. August 17, 2007

    grayman

QOTD: Sometimes. Tonight it was a 2005 Littorai Pinot Noir Les Larmes Anderson Valley. You are a visionary. The future is WLTV. I’m convinced that it will one day rival the traditional networks and cable channels.

  219. August 18, 2007

    Vinacull

Boooh yeah THUNDER and another exciting EP! We are all about the Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Just can’t afford to drink them very often. Gary I fully appreciate your comments on Guigal. They are one of those that people love to bash because of their high volume production, but still is one of my all time favorites because the wines generally show so well — from entry level CdR through CDP up to Hermitage and Cote Rotie. Hopefully some day I have a chance to try one of the single vineyard La la’s from a classic vintage.

Excellent – a REAL Cote-Rotie episode, although I have to admit, whenever I hear Cote-Rotie, I think of “Sir Gary”. :-)

QOTD: If I watch WLTV at home in the late evening, then I am often sipping some wine. However, I often watch in airports, in a hotel room, or at work during lunchtime and the wine option is, um, not available.

  228. February 26, 2008

    NC Carl

Dang right I drink wine while watching.

As a matter of fact, I had the Espelt Saulo last night while watching, and I gotta say, our pallets didn’t jive on that wine. No biggie, I’m going to roll into a bottle of Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz/Vio this weekend. So I watched this episode to see what I was missing out on by not buying the $55 Guigal.

  229. June 25, 2008

    Mike Linton

Gary came out big for this one and I just don’t taste what he’s talking about. I thought it had a flat bitter cherry taste to it, with a sour dirt undertone – I threw away half of it. It may be just that this winemaker’s sensibility doesn’t agree with my palate, as I have had several poor to lackluster bottles from Guigal and don’t plan on buying any others.

Fish cheese!? No thanks, id be gaging. I have to make a plum sauce at work and it gets fish oil in it…. YUCK! I cant stand the smell. It probably harks back to when I was in 3rd or 4th grade and ate some dried squid. Fucked up my fish palate forever, I think. Ive seen the Cote-Rote wines in stores before but didnt know a thing about them, thanks again for hammering some knowledge into my brain. QOTD: I watch at all times of the day since Im trying to catch up to the current episodes, so I usually dont plan a wine pairing with the show.

Hey there G. Just going through the archives and realized I had not tried a Cote Rotie. Will definitely now!

QOTD: I always have a glass while watching WLTV. Normally after work, I pop a bottle and pour a glass of wine, let it sit, play with my German Shepherd, then go hit the gym, come home, cook a nice dinner, have my wine with dinner and watch WLTV. Always makes for a great ending to the day. Cheers!
