Perfect timing on the oak episode – I was just thinking to myself that I’ve a lot to learn in this arena. For instance, the red meritage from Walla walla I’m currently drinking finishes just like an oakey chard. It’s got me scratching my head, but I think I can chalk it up to my oak association prejudices. Isn’t wine interesting?

Gary … I went to a wine tasting last year that featured Chilean wines and the host (who was a Chilean winemaker) said that they were still finding carmenere in their vineyards where they thought they had merlot. Said that because they thought they were picking merlot, the wines were tasting a lot younger/greener than if they would have picked at the right time for carmenere… anyway, I’ll stop rambling.
