I feel uncomfortable surrounded by all this wood, and the spit bucket – IS NOTHING SACRED?

Nice to see a new addition to the Thundercats collection, even though it is the most irritating character of the lot.

Nice episode Gary, and as for the QOTD – I think so, don’t you?

Sorry to hear about the Baltimore Raven’s rout of the Jets, 33-0 sounds like a lot.

I’m on board. Like’d the montage. I’m not a big fan of overoaked wines these days. Sometime back I read an article about, dare I say the name, Kendall Jackson’s first VR Chardonnay. The story goes it was flawed and in an attempt to somehow make it drinkable they over oaked the juice. This caught on and became the poster child of overoaked wine. It’s kind of ironic that they struck gold with bad juice and lots of oak. Why everyone else jumped on the bandwagon and produced over oaked monsters is a mystery to me. I embrace well balanced wines that respect the fruit and don’t try to manipulate it too much.

  38. August 22, 2007

    Robert F

I’m not sure I want to put that much wood directly into my mouth. A little bit is fine, though.

QOTD: Maybe one foot on – It depends.

    Wine Noob Here!
Just got turned on to the show. I’ve been an huge fan of whiskey for a few years and I’ve been branching into wine to broaden my horizons. I can’t wait to get into the backlog of shows and find out what I can learn and enjoy. See you all on the forums!

The best #59, Julian Peterson, going to help lead the Hawks back to the Super Bowl.
Yes the Ravens beat the Jets 33-0 in pre-season. What I think everyone is missing is that the Ravens ended up having a horrible season afterward, while the Jets made it to the second round of the playoffs.
The Vikings should take no joy in their pre-season mean-nothing victory.

    Interesting episode, Gary.

I could use some help in understanding the food matches that work (or don’t) with oaky wine. I’ve read some specific advice, such as avoid oaky white wines with egg-based dishes or smokey-flavored foods (e.g., smoked fish). On the other hand, I had an oaked Chardonnay with a frittata and it was fine. Are there any principles here (e.g., match acidic food with acidic wines)?

Way to keep balance in the show, GV. Maybe you don’t party with the Oak Monster as often as you used to, but you can still enjoy the occasional dance. That’s a good lesson for all of us, I think. Thanks.

On board and ready to blast off! By the way, is it just me or does Snarf resemble the oak monster? Maybe he IS the oak monster. It can’t just be a coincidence that he showed up for today’s show.

    bossman

Nice eps., not a huge fan of the oak but there’s room for everything to different extents (there’s a Robert Young Scion in my cart now).

I don’t know there Vaynerchuk, that’s some pretty slick production in that montage, I’m on board alright but if we start getting simulating lightning strikes and crashing thunder sound effectgs and get away from the birds and phone ringing in the background I’m gonna have to rethink this whole thing.

    Open the FedEx!

I’m as On Board now as I was at the Hamburger Choo-Choo in Huntington, L.I., where a little train brought your burger from the grill around the counter to where you sat. Toot-toot — fun times!

While keeping an open mind, nose & pallette for the Robert Young, methinks the bottom line will still be:
    Me love Cookie Monster.
    Me no love Oak Monster.

Oh wait, I *do* have Cotchery! Ah well, Jennings wasn’t getting anywhere, someone was gullible enough to drop him for a homer, and Pennington’s on the bench, so why not?

alright, I’ve been lurking here for a couple of weeks now (since I read the article in Slate). Guess I should come clean, come out, and be down with Vayniac Nation. I’ve watched maybe 30 or 40 episodes since finding this site, absolutely LOVE the reviews. Sort of a wine barbarian, I don’t have a very discriminating palate (coffee, however is a different story), but I can recognize the 2 extremes: know what’s nasty, and what’s extremely good. The 70% in between tastes very much the same to me.

Anyway, I’m enjoying learning much more about wine, expanding my exposure to new tastes, and being entertained by GV, you da MAN. (But…. just wait for Sept 16th. Caw! Caw!)

    There. De-Lurked, officially. Dealwiddit.

Gary … I went to a wine tasting last year that featured Chilean wines and the host (who was a Chilean winemaker) said that they were still finding carmenere in their vineyards where they thought they had merlot. Said that because they thought they were picking merlot, the wines were tasting a lot younger/greener than if they would have picked at the right time for carmenere… anyway, I’ll stop rambling.

QOTD: If there’s still room on board, I’m in …

Perfect timing on the oak episode – I was just thinking to myself that I’ve a lot to learn in this arena. For instance, the red meritage from Walla walla I’m currently drinking finishes just like an oakey chard. It’s got me scratching my head, but I think I can chalk it up to my oak association prejudices. Isn’t wine interesting?

Damnit Gary, you made me spit wine all over my keyboard! I must say you and the oak monster make a cute couple. I’ve never liked much oak but in the last week i’ve had an 04′ numanthia with alot of oak that’s very well integrated that was extremely delicious. I’ve also had a barolo, an 01′ brunello riserva and Ribera del duero riserva that were so over-oaked and tannic that I couldn’t even drink them. That’s never happened to me before. What a waste of $250!

  122. August 23, 2007

    JTS_Brown

Good to see you embracing your inner wood. it was quite a cathartic show.

my favorite #59 is one of the Browns finest…. Mike Johnson. Solid linebacker for years and if the Browns could have ever beaten the Broncos, he would not be a secret. Mr. Johnson, I have not forgotten you.

Gary, remember Bernie throwing for 489 yards against the Jets in the 1986 playoffs? I don’t want to get banned from the site but that was a great memory from childhood. Double OT game ending with Mark Moseley’s FG. 23-20. Of course, Elway ended the joy with a 98 yard drive that I will never be able to forget. You may have seen it. Unless, of course, you’re headless!!!

enough of that… Great pics with Mr. Oak Monster. you guys make a great couple. Glad to see you made up.

Gary likes the wood in his mouth, and sniffing toe fungus? Hey, not like there’s anything wrong with that. You know who else likes wood? Termites. I enjoy drinking fruit, not tree bark. But I can’t entirely bash the oak, seriously. I do enjoy the creamy vanilla chardonnay from time to time – especially if my wife puts a gun to my head and forces me to eat at California Pizza Kitchen. (Hey, just kidding, CPK TCB, know what I mean?) Bottom line: Gary, your working life is wine, you’ve devoted yourself to teaching us about the noble grapes, and massive respect to you for that. It’s a massive hobby for me now, and you’re a big reason for that. Thanks, and keep wining!

Never had the Clos Apalta but i’m a huge fan of chilean wines. So i was very happy to see that you lined up that wine in this episode, specially at the end. So bad it didn’t delivered. Maybe the 04’s are a bit austere. I had the Don Melchor 04 and it was really good. Maybe i should stick to that one or the Alpha M.
    I’m an oak monster fan.

Interesting episode, but let’s be honest – excessive use of oak is a New World prevision that has been hoisted on us by Robert Parker in an attempt to completely eradicate the notion of terroir. No more olive branch – PLEASE!

Who’s the blond chick wearing the WLTV shirt in the ad link for View more schwag? Can you have her on the show? She’s cute!

Gary, have you ever tried the Del Datto (sp) wine? All 100% new oak, and by far the iggest oak monester in town! Also has anyone out there been to their winery? They do some coo stuff and it’s worth a trip = all tastings are barrel samples and we are talking about a large selection of – digfferent of oak and grapes. What is cool about this s they allow you to pick and choose any sample you liked, before they start their blending, to creat your own, specific to your tast, bottle.

QOTD: so on board i’m a crew member!

Very entertaining episode, thank you Gary!

I very very rarely get excessive use of oak in
my wines, it’s my choice because I don’t like to
drink wood. So I’m with you there and I think you
were always right saying over-oaked wines are
    just faulty.

About being on board – sorry but I think I’m not.
I tend to disagree with your tasting-notes mostly
(only concerning the wines I know obviously).

But, I love your show and watch every episode and will

Hey…don’t speak ill of the Redskins. It just means you’re still jealous we raided the Jets for players a few years ago. Still miss Randy Thomas and Santana Moss? Of course, last year w/ Brunell showed that if you have a weak-armed QB then Moss isn’t much of an asset, so I guess Chad doesn’t really need him.

QOTD: On board? Sure, why not. I’m on board like all those Jets players wanting to go to a real franchise with the BEST fans in football.

We ate in Santa Fe last night and had dolcetto d’alba and dolcetto gratinata.
Both were great. The retaurant maintains a fragrance free environment so they gave us the sniffy sniff as we entered. It would have seemed awkward but we knew one of the waitors from home – both waiters were really nice. My wristband picture is almost on the way and another Vaniac surprise may be coming too.

Gary, I love you but surely 89 points can’t be a pass?? You have scored wines 89 in the past which have been extremely good wines – this to me is the flaw in the 100 points system; it’s just not consistent and suggests that anything below 90 points is not good. Sorry but that’s how I feel! I think that wines should not be scored at all but just described – it’s just a number and they don’t mean anything to me.
