‘fess up, this is calculated right? Yesterday I add RY Scion to the cart, how could I not add Domaine du Castel today to do the comparison? You’re a shrewd one, Gary.

I’m afraid you lost me with the Tot Ser (must be either sports related or Belarusian in origin).

Did you see Continental dropped sponsorship on Byrne (he he) arena?
I dunno, WLTV ThunderDome sure has a nice ring to it.

QOTD: Babies and young kids, we connect on some level (probably has to do with similar maturity levels).

I’m doing the tasting tomorrow solo, I’ll leave instructions to the fam to lock up the keyboard in case I REALLY like both bottles.

QOTD: I am fascinated by the fact that you can’t stop making comments about the GMEN. Sounds like a little jealousy.

Very disappointing to hear about the Woop Woop. The 2005 was excellent; scored a 88 with Josh Reynolds (Tanzer). For a while it was an everyday mid-week drinker for us. I tried the 2006 which was very disappointing – sounds like 2007 is even worse – I almost feel like buying it – to see bad it is.

I’m bummed that the aglianico sparkler didn’t step up. Could have been a great and interesting little wine.

I’ve had Woop Woop Chard before, but didn’t think it was that bad. Although, I’m sure I did not have the 07. Maybe it’s a bad year?

qotd: the weather in NYC right now. What gives?

    Have a good #300 Gary!

Holy hell, what was Liono doing to that other Thundercat on the spit bucket…looks like you are running a burlesque thundercat party, you know where they all get back together after a while and just go crazey….
QOTD – What fascinates me is how anyone cannot love the Toronto Raptors…Gary, there is a Raptors T-shirt coming for you to wear on the show. :)

Thanks for redeeming Kosher wine by whipping out the Castel. I’m afraid the damage was done two episodes ago, though.

Premium kosher wines can be found at less threatening price points. Keep your eyes peeled for the new single vineyard Yarden 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s flying off the shelves in Israel and would be very popular here in the US as well.

  38. August 23, 2007

    Loweeel

QOTD: Petite sirah, wacky varietal-specific roses (e.g., petite sirah, alicante, mouvedre), and ISRAELI WINE. Thanks for the love to Castel, but that should just be the beginning! Many other AWESOME Israeli wineries are out there that BRING THE THUNDER, TANAKH-style!

Had my first ‘07 last week from South Africa (Graham Beck Waterside 2007 Chardonnay) and I know it was better than that Whoopy thing.

    The others looked good though.

QOTD – History, especially Ancient Greece & Rome and general military history.

By the way, whatever happened to that Sherry episode you talked about a few weeks ago?

QOTD: Ummm…. How come I like olive oil but hate olives? Why did neither the original native Americans nor the first European settlers to the deep southand Texas not say to themselves “F$%@ing Hell!!! It’s really hot here, let’s keep going until the weather improves”? Why did the NHL think they could sell hockey in Nashville, Tampa, Pheonix, Atlanta, but that teams in Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Quebec City wouldn’t work? I could go on, but….

  58. August 23, 2007

    JonE

Mass production cheap Australian is really starting to tank as the numbers go up up up, same thing with cheap Spanish stuff. Its a shame to see really, because even three years ago Woop Woop seemed very servicable across the board.

QOTD: the idea of heaven, wine marketing (in a sick sick way), the way people walk.

  59. August 23, 2007

    Grasshopper

    Sensei,

#300 tomorrow, congrats and thank you!

QOTD – well aged first growth bordeaux, I have never had one and I an very fascinated to try.

Had a good chuckle on the RLE “Rotten Lemon Explosions”…..:)

Someone recommended a spoof on the movie 300 for tomorrow…Thundercats vs. The Spartans…my money is on the TC’s!

Great show Gary. I am really excited about tomorrow #300 and we get to drink along. It should be a blast.

QOTD: how in spite of our “intelligence” we humans are so often motivated by such base emotions as fear and greed, anger and love, etc. It causes us all to do some pretty irrational things at times . . .

    Cheers

Great show! I’m a newbie and I have to say, I gave you a shout out at my interview for a new job at a cafe/wine shop. So not only did you get a new viewer, but I just got a call back today and I’m hired! Thanks and keep up the awesome shows.

Okay, you got me. Sparkling Aglianico IS fascinating.

So: the Le Pousseur, is that French or is it actually California with a French name?

  65. August 23, 2007

    Toke-Dawg

    Hey Gary,

Great ep. Thanks for finally whipping out the Castel. Finally featuring on of many Israeli AND kosher wine that bring serious thunder. Hope that all of those who were discouraged two days ago will reconsider.

There are also cheaper Israeli thunder-bringers out there that are totally worth checking out, especially cabs:
Galil Mountain, Yiron, 2003 and 2004 which just hit shelves ($20;Rogov 91 pts)
    Galil Mountain, Cab, 2005 ($13-15; Rogov 88-90)
    Ella Valley, Cab, 2003 ($27-30; Rogov 90)
Ella Valley, Pinot, 2005 (about to be released; Rogov 91)
Carmel, Anything in the Single Vineyard Series($20; Generally 90-93 pts)
    Barkan, Reserve Cab, 2004 ($15-20; Rogov 89)
    Yarden, Cab, 2003 ($22; Rogov 93)
Yarden, El-Rom Vineyard Cab, 2003 ($45; Rogov 95 – The talk of the Israeli wine world and hard to get)

Very uncool comment about Marino! You must still be ticked off on all the times Marino and the fins took the jets down. I guess I can understand your bitterness. I personally think he is an egomaniac, but one of the greatest QBs ever.

Gotta say my son fascinates the heck out of me. Just to watch him learn new things and work through little obsticles he comes across.

Decent sub $20 sparkling wines are always a good thing.

    Elliot Essman

    What fascinates me? Women.

Good show, and I am glad we finally had a kosher winner. I knew it would happen. The real issue isn’t kosher, it is preconceptions. We’re all human, and we have them. But that doesn’t mean we can’t lose them.

  72. August 23, 2007

    Bobinnati

QOTD – string theory fascinates me, but then again, so does wine tasting, but on a different level. The look of pain on your face after tasting the Woop Woop was real. Sorry it was so lousy.

  73. August 23, 2007

    FredinNYC

Sorry to hear about how awful the Woop Woop chard was, especially since I’ve been a longtime fan of Woop Woop shiraz, which IMHO, in the best QPR shiraz around.

BTW: It’s LE POUSSEUR (not ‘Le Posseur’), which means “The Grower” (not ‘the Poser’)

  74. August 23, 2007

    Dominus

Glad you corrected your “Craig” slip :) though as always, I was intrigued with the show esp the Castel. I may need to spring for a couple of bottles and compare to my Reginac.

QOTD: What fascinates me? Wow, if I stayed on the subject I guess what fascinates me is taking this round berry and turning it into delectable nectar called wine. But really, I am fascinated how someone who died when he was 35 could produce the most amazing music we still enjoy today some 250 years later and of course, Im talking about Mozart. Absolutley fascinating.

I’ll be there tomorrow with my two bottles!!!!

    Cheers

P.S. Most of the stash I sent you are not TCs, erroneous advertising on eBay but I think there’s at least one. :(

  75. August 23, 2007

  77. August 23, 2007

My daughter was born on Friday the 13th, too. You’re right: It IS a lucky day.

QOTD: The things that fascinate me are usually things that shouldn’t.

  78. August 23, 2007

    Jameus

You really brought a mixed bag to the table today eh? Did you guys grab the Bonny Doon for today because of that discrepancy in scores or did it just work out that way? To me that’s just even more proof that trusting one’s own palate is always the way to go :)

QOTD: The rate at which children can learn things. They are incredible and seem to act like knowledge sponges imo. I was able to take the training wheels of my stepsons bike one day, and within about 8 rides out with me he was able to ride into the single track trails with me on my mountain bike… truly fascinating!

  79. August 23, 2007

    Zinmaster

QOTD: Old Knarled up vines that serve up grapes that can spend years in the bottle and somehow never seem to spoil. Who’d a thunk it? Thundercats and newbies unite! Zinmaster is a lurker no more!!!

Too bad the sparkling wine wasn’t a favorite. I grew up in a family that loves Champagne and we’re always looking for something new to try. I’ll be looking forward to the sparking wine episode you mentioned.

Also can’t wait for episode #300!

  86. August 23, 2007

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: the various structural patterns of tree species. *shrug* Actually, as of about a month ago, when I saw my first WLTV episode, I am now fascinated with wines. I don’t have anywhere near the ability to distinguish wine tastes (or smells) as 98% of the rest of these folks on here, but I am LOVING all the learning that I’m absorbing here. You’ve made a topic (wines) that I previously thought was dull, an obsession. So I have to give you props, man. May the Flying Spaghetti Monster touch you with His noodly appendage.

haha, nice Eli Manning imitation. (Caw! Caw! -Sept 16)

QOTD: the human condition. are we a bunch of war mongering monkeys doomed to eventual extinction? or are we spiritually and intellectually superior to any other species on earth, and are we capable of creating utopia?

QOTD: The power of the human mind, emotions, and how so many of us truely forget how great it is to have the people in our lives that we take for granted on a daily basis. I’m also fasinated how having a positive experience in a place can connect total strangers…

  98. August 24, 2007

    Robin C.

QOTD: My cats fascinate me – They look like dancers – every pose is graceful. Wine fascinates me – that living, changing quality really captures the interest. And Gary Vaynerchuk fascinates me – you never know what he’s going to say next. And other people and things that have the above-mentioned qualities fascinate me.

    QOTD – belly buttons…..

Hey GV, crash it up baby. Bring the thunder! Ep 300!!!

  100. August 24, 2007

    thabeav

    Fun show.

It’s tough to criticize Marino (one of the best ever) when your recent QB’s have been Vinny T. and Chad P.

A weak and inaccurate throw at the camera……THAT’s Chad P., not Eli. Eli would throw an accurate rocket…..to the free safety (Mott).

Sucks that the show won’t be live, but I applaud your restraint. It would really suck if it crashed during my party (full of potential new Vaynaics). Perhaps if you hadn’t spent the the last six months on an airplane……….
Does your family still recognize you? You travel more than Scottie Pippen.

    I miss the Iron Sheik.

Were those thundercats on the the bucket pro-creating?

  101. August 24, 2007

QOTD: I’m fascinated by history, which in turn fuels my love of old stuff! I love antiques like old books, letters, marbles, art pottery, stamps, sports cards, furniture(Arts and Crafts period!), pipes, tobacco tins, cigar bands, rugs, photos, tobacco cards, movie posters, paintings, sculptures.

I’m completely fascinated by mankind’s seemigly infinite stupidity. I’m also fascinated by how Nature, in its infinite complexity, has come to produce such stupid creatures, as well as a plane of existence so filled with suffering, tragedy and misery.

Wow, 300 tomorrow! Maybe you should open with some obnoxious clip from the movie. If only we could get a legion of Vayniacs to prance around in their underwear whilst shouting praise for Sparta.

Thanks for bringing out the wonderful wonderful Domaine du Castel Grand Vin – it’s the best wine I ever tasted. Had the 2004 w/ Eli Ben-Zaken, the master behind Castel.

Check out my article about Domaine du Castel from a visit I made to Ramat Raziel and the winery (actually when they were bottling) back in February.

Oh, sorry, in answer to the question above, I believe they make about 100,000 bottles annually of their three great wines:

The Grand Vin – the top red
Petit Castel – second label but also a winner
    “C” Chardonnay – a classic

I’m fascinated by… wine, the world, the people in it, the beauty they make, the ugliness they manifest, the sound of a cello, the colors Van Gogh used in his paintings, smoke, twins, how much time kids can spend deconstructing simplicity, this question.

    Gary,
Glad to hear you like sparkling wines so much. What do you (or anyone else) think about Martini and Rossi Asti Spumante? I know it’s considered “common” and is at a lower price point, but i’ve tried a lot of sparklings and every time it hits my tounge I remember why i love it… curious to see what you think.

And, I know I sound like a broken record, BUT some of my other favorite sparkling wines come from Glenora down on Seneca Lake in the Fingerlakes Region.

QOTD: People facinate me… I love watching people and trying to to figure out what makes people “tick”… can’t get enough! And, that’s why I love NYC so much – I dont get there often, but when i do I love it! Sit me down on any corner in NYC and I could sit there all day and be facinated by all the people.

    Congrats on 300 Gary!

Brand new to WLTV and pleased to find a website that treats wine as a beverage that brings people together. Gary, you have the right approach, spaciba. QOTD: What fascinates me? FOOTBALL, but the real football(okay, soccer), not the American gladiator version where the play lasts mere seconds, the game lasts for hours, officials can take minutes to interpret a call from tape, the players equipment could withstand a bomb blast and those bloody stupid cheerleaders. Other than that I rank it right up there with bowling for surefire entertainment.

Hey Gary, congrats on 300 eve show and for lighting the champagne spark in me.
Had a cava last night and it was great. Also loving you sharing your knowledge about wines and regions, truly fascinating! Oh, pardon me, but that’s the answer to the QOTD.
My other great fascination is cheerleaders! The world would be a much better place if all the guys battled on the lawn for a football and all the girls battled for best dancer, singer and cheerer on the sidelines. Peace through football brethren!!!!

I am sure you have heard a great deal about the previous episode you did on Kosher wines (the choices – if you were going to do 2 from the same winery, why not Golan Heights – i.e., Yarden) so the Castel was finally a choice that begins to show the strides made in making kosher wines. Deinitely 2 thumbs up.

QOTD: How quickly I was turned onto wine. I was so used to sipping the cheap garbage that my parents bought at the stores that I thought Id never like wine. I was into drinking shots and mixed drinks, then got bored with alcohol altogether. A few years later I tried some good wines and here I am with a decent collection ageing and ready to try new and exciting things in the wine world.
