How the hell do I leave a comment when no one has left one yet, my computer doesn’t have a place for it until one is made. I’d be first all the time–end rant.

I CAN’T TAKE THE SUSPENSE!!! Guess I’ll find out the end to the big mystery count-down later on in the week….

I would say at least %50 of my wine sales in restaurants and liquor stores is based on label design. For shame…for shame.

QOTD: Met those guys at a wine tasting I was conducting… the whole “tasty taste” “sniffy sniff” thing… haven’t had any major meetings since then, but I’ve been encouraging all of my colleagues to jump on the Vayner train!

Gary, you caught me. I’ve been lurking since I read about you on slate. Love the show. As for the I-phone, have people send you a list 3 or 4 of their favorite underrated or best value wines within a certain price range. Then you can do a show where you taste a couple. Give the i-phone to the person with the best find. This will be a good one for the CKC’s trying to impress their lady or gentleman friends, or anybody for that matter. The only problem is you might get a lot of repeat wines. In that case, I recommend cutting the i-phone into pieces and sending the pieces to the people who sent in the same recommendations.

in regards to your love of petite verdot, i recently drank a 2005 eastern australian wine called ‘yard dog’ that was very petite verdot heavy (46%). a fun, if not outstanding wine.

I sure missed the Thundercats craze: don’t understand it and can’t say that I want to.

QOTD: I had turned my wife on to WLTV and her parents live in Jersey. On a reccent visit they ended up driving past Wine Library on the way to lunch. “Stop,” she screamed, “that’s ‘THE’ Wine Library!” Her parents must have thought she was nuts, but at her insistence they stopped and went in. From what I understand the store is immense. Her dad got sucked into the excitement of the moment and ended up buying a case of Bordeaux futures. My wife ended up buying a WLTV shirt for me. At any event, my in-laws probably think I’m nuts…

Speaking of nuts, sitting in front of a computer last Friday with a bottle of Sonsierra Rioja and a truly delicious bottle of Lindaflor Malbec from Argentenia while watching the WLTV taste-along with my wife, Julie the lurker, was perhaps the geekiest thing we have ever done. That said, I was a bit surprised about the light turnout in the comments section. Gary, could it be that you scared them all away with the “singing”?

My six year old daughter has a really great impersonation of Gary V when she talks of aromas of dark cherry, tobacco, cedar box, excellent mouthfeel and a thirty second finish.

Awesome show Gary, thank you – Pauillac and St.-Julien are two of my favorite apps. in Bordeaux.

QOTD: when I went on vacation, I took about 2 dozen wines with me for my family and in-laws. I know it opened their eyes to other varietals out there – I know it led to at least one WL order for you if not two at this point, and I’m sure I added at least one viewer/lurker …

  44. August 27, 2007

    AppellationMan

More viewers, eh? You could always challenge Robert Parker (or James Laube. Could you imagine him in Clay-mation?) to a “Celebrity Deathmatch” and broadcast it as an alternative to the Super Bown Half-time Show (nobody wants to see a bunch of prancing back-up dancers anyway.) And then, if you get picked up, you can send me the iPhone. If not, I won’t be disappointed; I just want to see you rumble with Parker.

  45. August 27, 2007

    jivieman

great show – always good to learn about french wines – they are not talked about as much (even with all the great ones)

  46. August 27, 2007

For the iPhone give away have viewers do a Scavenger Hunt of sorts: sign up for a Corkd account, leave a comment on WLTV for 5 days in a row, send/e-mail in a picture with a WLTV t-shirt or wristband (I’m still waiting for mine wink-wink), etc.

Also, I’m a bit surprised Pend d’Oreille Winery receive a Gold Medal for the Idaho Wine Festival. I’ll admit they are one of the best winery in Idaho but its only because they typically use grapes from the Columbia Valley in Washington State.

  47. August 27, 2007

QOTD: Here is my idea, just give me the IPhone and I will use it to call everyone I know to tell them about WLTV. Come on GV…..I need you to be a Lion-O not a Wilycat.

Hey, just found this place yesterday and have watched about the 10 past eps since then. Good stuff…sorry I missed the first 280. I’m just starting to get into wine seriously, and I think it would be cool to have a pairing contest for the iphone give-a-way. Choose a wine that we can all get our hands on pretty easily, then have an episode where you try the top pairings people come up with, or the ones that intrigue you most.

or, the thunderbirds idea is pretty good too. an iphone could probably fill up your desk with t-birds. in any case, keep up the good (read: entertaining) work.

Great show Gary, I will try the Chateau Pichon Baron 2004 and the Chateau Pichon Lalande 2001. How about a show or some advise on “2005 Bordeaux Buying Strategies”, i.e. what would you buy if you had to fill out case for $300, $600 and $1,200?

No funny WLTV stories sorry :-(

Excellent ep! The 300’s are off to an great start.
For the I-Phone Giveaway, how about collecting the names of all those who leave comments during the course of one or two week’s worth of shows, put them all in a spit bucket, and pull out one, the winner!

    AndrewB

I showed the video of when you attempted to do the live show and showed it some vendors and they were like these idiots don’t know what they’re talking about, like they were really mad about it. None of my other wine co-workers really care about WLTV, the’re just like whatever, so its pretty much my own thing in my world.

QOTD: Sending an email to my friend with the WLTV link for a great episode (un-oaked Chardonnay). At the exact same time getting an email from her with a link to the Slate article about WLTV. We called each other and laughed at the singularity of the moment.

St. Julien has been my favorite Bordeaux area, but Pauillac is a very close second. In two weeks we are having a wine tasting/dinner at the house for the Bordeaux/Sauternes region. We are going to taste the differences between Left and Right bank. (I still get them confused.) We will be opening mostly 1999s. I have the 2003 Arche Sauternes for dessert. (saving the 1990 d’Yquem for a special day)

GARY – When will you taste the Arche again (last one was corked)?

I will be on the look out for the Pichon’s in Oklahoma. They will be very expensive as we have a three tier system in the state and everyone wants a piece of the pie. Wholesale/Distributor/Store

GARY – idea for the I-phone: if possible (technically) see who has left the most comments across the 300 episodes by a certain date. Those that are new can go back and add comments; those that are vanyiacs can compete as well.

Great show today-already ordered some for my cellar!

  55. August 27, 2007

Great show today! Got a soft spot for the left bank. My wife and I had the pleasure to hit the Pichon Comtesse estate in BX this spring on our honeymoon, was able to taste the ‘01 and LOVED IT! Unfortunately with the dollar taking a beating I wasn’t able to take back my weight in the wine. Your prices are better than if I could have shlepped it back on my own. Glad I waited…must check the accounts soon. Looking for some more nice bottles to round out the cellar, must add the Baron and Comtesse, especially at your prices!

Very informative episode. I have only had a few chateau level Bordeaux’s on the low end, but it would be great to try these. I’m here sipping my lowly Frascati.

Nice episode – still trying to expand my taste of French wines.
Long time lurker and unfortunately, only an occasional viewer as of late (such is life). Was waiting for the opportunity to comment on your “extra special” large tasting glass. In an episode a long time ago you mentioned that you get a lot of comments on the glass but weren’t sure where to get one. I don’t have a perfect solution locally but I saw a lot of these in the shops of Montalcino advertised as Brunello tasting glasses. If this has already been discussed then so be it, like I said I have been only occasionally viewing these days.
Going to have to pay attention on this iphone now that a 18yr has a solution for all of us non-AT&T users.
Any chance on a Carmenere episode? These wines have been seriously hit or miss for me (the hits keep bringing me back).
    Cheers

GV. Nice episode, wish I could afford those wines :-(
QOTD; I was introduced to WLTV by my brother, I had dial up internet so he copied about 60 episodes on a disk, and gave it to me for christmas. I have been a fan ever since. Wine lovers need to watch this blog, if for no other reason THE HONESTY. Who else can pan Opus 1, but Gary. I don’t always add my 2 cents, sorry, I am not that busy, just lazy. You rock! I wish I had your work ethic.

  66. August 27, 2007

    Robert F

Hey, I just noticed that “new to wine?” badge on the right. That’s a fantastic idea! (although I’ve already seen all of those episodes).

Pauillac was the first appellation I really fell in love with. I’m still reeling from my trip there last spring visiting various Chateaux (about 3 weeks after you were in Bordeaux). Can’t afford the big boys since I’m in the CKC, but I’m building up my cellar with second wines like hauts de pontet, haut bages averous, croix de beaucaillou (not paulliac, but oh well), reserve de la comtesse, etc. Maybe I’ll jump on the boat and splurge for a REAL 2005 paulliac.

    GV,
While at the CMS class in W Palm Beach, I made acquaintances with several of my classmates. I ran into a guy who owns a place in Miami that’s a fellow Vayniac. He asked if I had ever seen this wacky guy Gary Vaynerchuck on WLTV before. LOL. After the blind tastings we would state which wines had “brought the thunder”! As for the iPhone: give it to the guy about to open a French restaurant with a huge Bx list… in October… in Mobile, AL… Thx.

great episode, I’ll probably be in Bordeaux next spring, I’ll have to save some money to be able to afford a couple of cases of the wines presented in todays show. By the way, a big thanx to GV and his crew for sending me the WLTV Oak Tees. Just gave away one of them as a gift to a friend, who was really happy about it. He had to put it on right away when we tasted an Oak Monster wine ….

I’ve been thinking a lot about a system based on number of comments to give away the iPhone. The main problem with giving out gifts based on user names is that you cant verify true identity. Perhaps if you started a user/password database and start forcing people to login to post a comment, then you can verify a person’s identity. Unfortunately i can’t think of any bullet proof way to offer the iPhone based on the current comment system that isn’t susceptible to fraud. Hell, too many people would just try and claim to be Brandon M, or some other person who posts all the time.

I had thought of identifying people by IP address, but too many people have dynamic IP’s or watch the show and post from multiple locations.

Also, im concerned that creating contests based on comments will generate lots of generic pointless short comments by people trying to fluff the numbers….

QOTD: No stories for me. Although I tell people about WLTV all of the time, I have never met a Vayniac “in the wild.” :-(

GREAT! Now I’ve got to find a way to buy something from Bordeaux! My wife’s gonna kill me! Darn you and you’re making these look so delicious! (I think I used up the exclamation marks)

Dude, a hot plum wrapped with bacon and stuffed with asparagus sounds great. I wonder how it would be in a wine, though. Is this a vegetable bomb?!

QOTD: I have communicated with Vaniacs via email and forums, but never met one in person (I’m sure they exist!) Favorite fellow Vaniac is also a fellow Raider fan! We met on Face Book and are looking forward to a great season for the Silver and Black where we double our wins from last year!

QOTD: My girlfriend and one of her friends have a “competition” going on to see who’s boyfriend has more “boyfriend points”. They both came to the realization that we are too similar because of our mutual love for G.V.

Great episode, wish I could afford to taste them for myself, maybe when I graduate from the CKC.

A label episode is a great idea, and just another thought, how about demystifying those crazy German Riesling labels and some of the other hard to decipher labels.

  82. August 27, 2007

u r a really funny guy, I love it. I am living Germany and come from China, so what?! I love ur wine library tv. move on! buddy!

You are killing me man…I am trying to keep my wine purchases at a minimum bu that 04 Baron is on sale up here and calling my name. I have held off until now….my cellar thanks you ;)
QOTD – This is easy. My wife and a few friends always make fun of me for how I met another vayniac GregO. They call it how I met my internet wine boyfriend…..
Greg and I met in the forums and decided to meet at our local wine store to buy some of the latest release. We both wore our wristbands as a way of signifying our membership in the vayner nation (Greg thought he saw some older stuffy loser with the wristband but luckily he was mistaken). Anyways, we are now in a tasting group together, were down in Niagara with JoeG, G-Runge, Benny Shiraz this past weekend and are getting psyched about the Buffalo party (you need to confirm buddy!).

I have an email coming, but just a thought: why don’t you make a show with a vertical tasting showing the differences between a very young Bordeaux but (perhaps too )fruity (1-2 year old), one or two wine that are below the mark (3-7 years), a mature bordeaux (8-12 yrs) and a good but old one say 15-20 yrs old of a good castle. I just had a ‘57 Latour which was still as young as other wines would be proud of after 2-3 years.

Thanks for answering the other day – not sure that I expected that :-)

You can always just send me the iPhone. I have no idea why I should get it, but it sounds like a good lottery this way ;-)

Love your comment yesterday (show #300) about the strawberries from Wegman’s. Not certain how far you are from Wegamns. My wife and I have three of them within five minutes from our house. You are doing the same thing for wine the Danny is doing for food. Making fun and enjoyable.

So you read all the comments yea?? Then where the hell is my 2000 Sansonnet order??!!! ;-)
Also, any chance you make an appearance at this years WS New York Wine Experience? or am I going to have to rent a car and drive my ass down to the Wine Library without a ghost of a chance that you will be there so I can say hi? I don’t get out East too often and by God I’ll do it….

QOTD:Met Grasshopper via WLTV,, now if I can get him to come and VISIT HIS FOLKS once in awhile, so I can have he and his wife over for a glass of wine sometime…….:-)

    # 300 seemed like such an ending, a conclusion to all that had gone before.
But CONGRATS on # 301 — a new beginning, and a casebook study in episode greatness.
Gar’, you were as subdued today as you were on episode # 1 — but as authoritative and at ease as you were on # 300.
There was no gimmickry about it, no ranting, and nothing over-the-top — just you, enthusiastically imparting your knowledge — from “there’s a sincerity to this wine…it’s real” — to the peppered, bacon-wrapped exploding plum!

QOTD: Funny? Maybe not so funny, but there’s me – knowing nothing about wine, but really into WLTV, the Forums, and a big fan of GV; and there’s my wife, the wine expert, afficionado and connoisseur, who could care less about Forums, blogging or WLTV.
I can’t believe she’s not into all of this, and she can’t believe that I’m truly interested in any of it.
Together we make one fine Vayniac!

Apple iphone give a way. Get a way to rate comments by other viewers. Take the average of all rating for the comment and give that commenter a score. Collect the score for 30 days, take the top 25 add them up. That would be their overall score. Highest score after 30 get the iphone. I think commentors will get friend to visit to rate their comments.

It’s going to take exactly one dozy midnight stroll to the bathroom by Mrs. Vaynerchuk stepping on one of those pesky Thundercats left out after playtime to see the demise of the burgeoning collection. Put your toys away, Gary before you put somebody’s eye out. Don’t make me stop this car.
Love the show. Big order from WineLibrary just came in today and it feels like Christmas in August.

Awesome show today. I would love to try those wines if I had the money. As for the contest idea, how about a video contest. Like who can put on the craziest wine tasting or something like that. And then they have to post it on youtube and see who gets the most hits or something like that.

    Hey GV,
I am one of the Vayniacs that have been that hasn’t been commenting as often as I should. It is NOT because I’m taking WLTV for granted, I’ve just been swamped (school, job hunt, sick dad blah blah blah) and I haven’t been getting to watch until the eps are a couple of days old and it seems pointless to comment about an ep days after the fact. However, I am caught up and will do my best to stay that way.
You are like a big old Cadillac, comments are your fuel and it takes a WHOLE lot of fuel to make that Caddy go.
    Thanks Gary.

Watching this episode, I realized I didn’t have any Pauillac on my ‘05 Bordeaux futures order, so I just added 2.

QOTD: Well, 5 guys huddled around a computer, watching you over and over again compare a glasses of wine to throw-up or a shoe dipped in mud and poop was about where it started; now it’s devolved into each of us shouting “BARNYARD!” at the others whenever possible. But we’re all paying a hell of a lot more attention to wine now, trying new things, and learning from you every day. Thank you.

Pichon LaLande has been one of my favorite wines for years. The first one I had was a 1978 and I’ve been fortunate enough to buy a couple of bottles from a number of vintages. I have two 04’s, but have yet to taste it. Thanks for the preview.

While the first growths are obviously great I would have a hard time choosing between a Pichon and a Leoville Las Cases.

Thanks for doing the Paulliac show. May I suggest a St Julien show?

So it’s POO-yak not POE-yak. Good to know.

Here is what you do: first, anyone who wants in recommends one wine they want to see you taste. Pick four at random.

Then, the commenters who recommended each of these wines each provide you with a video telling us, the commenting public, WHY they deserve an iPhone.

Run one each on Monday through Thursday, then invite the commenters to pick a winner (plus, I guess, anyone else the commenters can cajole into commenting).

QOD: since you’re loving the Pichon-Lalande, here you go: about a decade ago, long before I knew enough for it to make much difference to me, I was invited to a benefit dinner (the guest of honor being Mme Lencquesaing herself) and several vintages of Pichon-Lalande, going back to 1959. I can still taste the pencil lead now.

Gary–Your show is great: I’ve never recommended an internet show to anyone or even watched one regularly until I discovered WLTV. Since then I turned on friends, colleagues at work and even my mother. Have they all become as addicted? I doubt it, but with time I think “word of mouth” is the best way to go about spreading the joy of WLTV. I wouldn’t get so obsessed with the number of comments. I know how you feel–I write weekly and its important to have feedback (I have people emailing or calling me almost daily)–but there is something about building a trackrecord, gaining trust that takes time. I’d measure it in years, not months. You’re doing a great job. Deep down inside you must know that; trust your instincts and keep the shows coming.

You know, speaking of expanding the Vayner Nation (did I spell that right?), have you ever thought of doing a “class” or a show at major universities? Maybe it’s because I’m just outta college or maybe because that’s how I got into wine, but I know I met some great people and learned great things at one of those gigs. There are college groups that will certainly pay to have you show up for a night to talk and taste with young, impressionable minds (the next generation of Vayniacs!). Anyway, that’s my two cents. BTW, if you’re ever in Santa Monica, check out Bodega Wine Bar… they have some fabulous malbecs :-)

Man, you get it done GV! Thanks for sharing another fun episode.

QOTD: Sometimes I ask some of our store customers if they watch the show. Some say they watch it. Unfortunately, I haven’t met someone on the street yet who openely and enthusiastically claims to be a fan. Myself, I’m proud to admit it. I suspect more wine people may be watching it than they let on. I say this because I notice how some of the customers that come into the store now describe wine in more Vaniacish way. More and more people are using words and phrases that seem to come out of the WLTV dictionary. I’m hearing “bringing on the thunder” and “oldworld-new world” more along with other words that I see on the show, but not in WS, Decanter, or WA.
    The WL influence is visible.

I’d really like to see you do the label show you were talking about. For people just getting into wine like myself, I know how labels can be misleading and it’s hard not to be biased going down the wine aisle.

#301 going strong. Ah, yeah, I’m really enjoying having to wait another
    @#$&# day, you tease.

I have no interest in the phone, but you could post an overlay of a word each day for a period of time (a week?) at different points in the show that would ultimately spell out a phrase. Then ask all entrants to email the phrase, number the emails and then pick a winner of all correct entrants out of a hat (or spit bucket). At least you’ll know they actually watched each episode (or was in contact with someone who did).

I have another package for you but I was hoping some other Vayniacs might be stepping up. Guys/gals this guy brings you this quality stuff day in and day out and you can’t scrounge up a Thundercat or two? At a minimum a comment isn’t going to cost you any time or money…… don’t be slackers. You don’t want to see Gary cry do you?

    Great Show!…very informative…how about a show comparing a $50-75 wine from 3 or 4 different regions…
QOTD:…I can’t get my friends, serious wine lovers to take the time to watch your show, I’m totally bummed that I have no one to share the show’s quirks with.

    Hey Gary,

I’ve haven’t kept up with your posts for the last 3 weeks. I’ve been traveling a ton and have had some friends getting married. It is the usual summer stuff.

I bet that the reason the comments are down is because a lot of the people on here are taking some time off and aren’t around their computers.

QOTD: Here is my suggestion for you on how to increase the comments… combine twitter and your video blog togetter. provide a text summary of your show that gets sent to peoples cell phones. you could probably even use twitter to do this. for people whoes phones can handle video have a edited version of your show (5-10 min long) they can view while on the go.

Those are my 2 cents… The idea above needs a little work but i hope you understand the direction i’m going to with it.

    Cheers,

    Rick

    Gary,

Been trying to catch up on back episodes since Conan. Still love what you’re doing.

Firstly, for your iPhone giveaway. It should be interactive…may sound stupid but review a easy to find wine (still tasty though) and have people guess your score on it. I’m sure a little too simplistic, but first thing that popped in my head.

Secondly, I think some people are scared to buy wine based on things other than labels or point scores. I know I don’t want to be let down if I’m throwing down $20+ on a bottle of wine that is unknown to me. In the same turn, it’s all about trying new things and learning what you do and don’t like. Basically, I think the show about labels would be a great one.

    Keep it up!

    Cheers,
    E

Love the show! Love the descriptions! Love the energy! Great show!

My suggestion is to do a Photoshop Contest. Take a snapshot of one of your episodes and use it as a source image. Or just have people submit any kind of “funny” wine related image so that you can choose your fave.

Love this episode. Very recently, I had the 2001 Reserve De La Comtesse, brought to us by dear friends to a tasting held in our home. I scored it 89, but I felt priviledged to try it, and very pleased by the characteristics of it. Nice pitch of the cork (not the first time it stays in the lense).

We can’t have that. I know I owe you lots and lots of my cents. (Certainly not my wine sense, as I have a very miniscule amount).

Have to tell you, though, I tried my first Petit Verdot (unblended) completely because of you and your opinion of the grape. And what do you know? It’s my most favorite wine this month! Thank you for putting the idea in my head, GV!

Because I live where I live, mid-america, wine drinkers and makers in this part of the US think completly differ then people say from Cali, or New York. So with that said, your show is bringing all differ types of wine lovers together, and tearing down those walls of “tredition” that have hurt the business for years.

LOVED THE EPISODE!! I love Pauillacs! QOD: First episode I watched was the episode JUST BEFORE the episode last August where you had to leave early due to either a ‘bachelor party’ or a ‘wedding rehearsal party’, you had a score of wine on the table, and someone comes up to you, whispers in your ear, and you announced you had to leave! LMAO!!!! That’s the episode that hooked me (although, you said in LA that many wineries were pissed! :) ) I saw that and told everyone I knew (just about :) ) to tune in to WLTV. And they have…:)

I.e., reward for directing more traffic to this site from internet communities OUTSIDE the wine ‘world’. To get more non-wine people (like me) hooked on wine and obsessing over your show.

I cannot wait to try some of the wines you had today, they seem totally up my alley.

    Grape Expectations

Here’s my two cents for today and I promise I’ll get in a dime’s worth of comments by the end of the week. Keep your head up, little flower!

QOTD: Immediately after my first post in the forums I was invited to a get together of Seattle Vayniaks and got to meet a truly great group of peeps.

Don’t think I have had a Pauillac yet so I will put it on my list of things to try.

QOTD: My oldest daughter refers to weekend days as “Daddy Days” because I do not work. And she knows that I watch “that wine guy” on my computer on work days. Occasionally when I am behind on WLTV episodes and try to catch up on the weekends she chastises me and says “the wine guy is for work days not Daddy Days, stop watching and play with me”, which I do.

Gary, borderline Lurker here reaching to you, BTW been here from day 1. Great show, thanks for reving up the education again in the show, Love it! Thanks so much for the Bordeaux show. I am very new to Bordeaux but have consumed lots of good Cali Cabs over the years and thought I had been drink great wine, little did I know. I have to tell you I ordered my first Bordeaux from WL, several weeks back, the 03 Ch.Sansonnet. So I decant the wine for about 3 hrs, pour a glass and Holy SH$%^&&*&%$t! A nose like I never experienced, mouth feel amazing and intense Blueberry and cedar, oh my God!.How could any one go thru life with tasting Bordeaux. Hook, line and sinker. Thanks so much for all you do!. “A little bit of you is change my wine life”, Thanks Scott

I hope you are reading this :P

    Iphone giveaway idea:

Pick 5-10 wines (common enough so people of diff areas can access them)so like 1-2 for each major area. Ask people to select ONE wine to taste and send in a small x word count description. Tell them what to mention: nose, taste(attack, mid, finish) emotional associations w/e. You know what I mean. They send it in.
You taste the wines, select the entries that not only nailed it, but do the very thing you do: teach you to see a specific wine in a different way, maybe even help you enjoy it more.
You can have a show with 3-5 finalists and their respective wines, and do your thing and talk about why you liked each finalist’s take.

    That would be fun. Anyway there is my dime ^^;

    Love the show.

Loving the bacon appearance today! =)

Gary, I know you have this love/hate thing with scoring wines, but as a consumer you need direction on what to buy otherwise (as you said in this episode) you buy based on labels or worse price. When I walk into a wine store, I admit I can get so overwhelmed with the choices…there are so many wines out there that scores help to differentiate between the mediocre and solid wines. I use your scores as well as other scores to separate the crap from the good juice because I can’t afford to taste everything.

Now this is not to say that I use wine scores AFTER I taste a wine. By then, I have my own “score” and I make the decision as to whether or not I want to buy this wine again. Scores just help to give me direction, then I can take it from there.

Please keep scoring and looking forward to Thursday!

Pichon Lalande is near and dear to my heart. First time that I tasted it was at the old old Le Cirque in NYC (where was that, somewhere in the 70’s, between Fifth and say Lex?). My wife and I had a bottle of the 1978 (this would have been in 1986). It was wonderful– with beef filets and venison. Glad I am on-board for the 2005.

Funny WLTV story… I had my college-age son watch an episode last year, I don’t remember what wines you were tasting, maybe Rhones, and you were talking about lizard-backs and worm-heads and poopy mushrooms and… well, he loves to taste any red now and say, “Nope, no worm-heads here. No poop.”

Nice to hear about the earthy, dirty, vegetal, graphite, etc. components of these wines. I think these qualities, odd at times, nevertheless make these wines soooooo interesting in the palate…

would have liked to have heard something about the difference between the pace at which these types of “big reds”, as opposed to many new world reds, travel through your palate- Napa cabs are often like race cars in your mouth and then they crash! A good Bordeaux slowly but surely leaves its complexity on the mid and back palate, rewarding the patient.

    G-squared!? You rock, Gary!!

New Vaniac here! Make sure to watch the latest Diggnation, Kevin does an uncanny Vaynerchuk impression. Of the wines I’ve tried so far I seem to really enjoy some of the African wines. Anyone have some favorites from that area?
The only bad thing I’ve found about wine is that there’s so many, and I want to try them ALL!

HUGE rinse on the Pichon. Thought you were skipping the rinse and going straight for the sniffy snif. This is the first comment I’ve made on any of your shows after watching quite a few Gary. Feels good to get out of the lurchbox. Keep up the good work.
ps I live in Cal. and wish your store were closer, I would order more wine from you but I get killed on the shipping. Thanks again. -Kanjimoti

GV, you want to meet the person that can buy those last two and invite their peeps over? I want to be one of those peeps! Those are WAY out of my budget but I always learn something from every episode and the forums have been great too. Between the two you really are changing the wine world.

Awesome show! I can’t wait to try a few of these.

QOTD: WLTV has completely changed my wine world, particularly with regards to oak. The oak monster and I used to be friends, but now I can’t stand him. Thank you for elevating my game.

GV– I’m new at this posting thing here — apologies if this lands here twice — I’m not the best navigator — anyway, I think newbies and long time Vaniacs should have an equal shot at the iPhone! suggest you ask lurkers to come forth NOW and win the chance to be in the game — we could snail mail you a postcard with our screen name and you could do a random drawing. just my two cents!!

LOVE WLTV and … belated congrats on the 300th!!!!!!

GV, you stopped asking for comments as much in your shows. That’s why you’re not getting as much love with the comments. Today’s request for comments is why you’re now getting tons…

Anyway, I did want to tell you that my pops turned me onto your site. You got a 59 year-old guy who couldn’t turn on a computer until seven years ago to clue me, an Internet media exec, onto your video blog. We head out to Napa/Sonoma every May. So, your site was a godsend to us!

I’ve been watching for two months (lurking), and I just wanted to say that I wish my magazine editors could develop the kind of compelling content that you do. The VH1 Behind the Vlog bit was hysterical!

    Great show

QOTD Story : My 2 year old totally blocks the world out when his favorite TV show is on. We can scream his name and he will not move. When I flip open the laptop and start WLTV and he hears “Hello everybody and welcome…..” he runs over to the computer and says “Gary” We may have to start using your voice to get him to the dinner table.

ALRIGHT alright, alright, i don’t want to see you cry either, so here’s my comment(s). (unrelated to todays show, i know, but hey- at least i’m commenting) we’ve been big fans since reading the article about you on slate, and i’ll tell you that i’ve never felt more confident walking down a wine aisle than after listening to you talk about wine for some weeks. we went into our local wine shop to find a few of your recommendations (the 4 vines chard, las rocas garnacha, and the jonsey port) which the lady working there recognized as endorsed by gary. so our cover was blown, we didn’t get the credit for picking out good wine on our own, but it was great going in there knowing what we were looking for! it was really useful drinking with you, and being told what it was that we smelled and tasted

And add me to the list of people who can’t do the swish and spit without choking themselves and getting wine up their nose… maybe you could do an episode on that, if you haven’t already…

next time i’ll try and have a comment relevant to the day’s show.

I’ll definitely be trying the Reserve de la Comtesse this fall and if I can think up a good enough special occasion I’m itching to try the Pichon Baron after watching this show…
I only really discovered your show last week and this is the fifth episode I’ve seen, plus I bought 6 of the Pasodoble futures based on your review of those – lurkers aren’t necessarily so bad! :)

just a quick note to say thanks Gary, you crack me up and I love how seriously you’re committed to this. I’m buying some wine from winelibrary just because of the show, so you can know its definitely working.

    Thanks!

Congratulations on #300. One of the many benefits of your show is that you are all over the map. Sometimes I really wish you had one to pull down behind you but that would be so old school.

Thanks for lobbing one into my wheelhouse. I live for Bordeaux. I want to taste every one of the 5,000 or so Chateaux before I exit the stage. Once you get to know the Bordeaux region you find that there are really two of them. The left bank of the Gironde river (Medoc and Graves) and the right bank of the Dordogne river before they join up(St Emilion and Pomerol). On each side there are distictive districts that have their own traditions. The Grand Crus were established in 1855 for the Medoc. They were divided into 5 classes of growths. The most first growths were located in Pauillac. The Segur family started many of the vinyards but wars, revolutions and other events saw these Chateaus change ownership with the Rothschilds family branches eventually becoming the prominent owners. Everyone as far back as Thomas Jefferson knew about Chateau Lafite. Next came Chateau Latour. In 1973 Baron Phillipe Rothschild lobbied successfully to become the only Chateau to be advanced to first growth status with his Mouton Rothschild…

As Gary demonstrated today the second growths of Pauillac have excellent pedigree and an even higher QPR. The description of fleshy plum characteristics is usually found in the right bank wines (St.Emilion) which use Merlot as the highest proportion with a few notable exceptions. Cabernet Franc is the biggest constituent of my favorite Chateau Ausone and in high degree Chateau Cheval Blanc in St. Emilion. The left bank (Medoc)is usually higher in Cabernet Sauvignon. An interesting side note is that Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc are the proud parents of Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2001 Pichon-Lalande was unique in comparison to other vintages. It was a blend of %50 Cabernet, 36% Merlot, and a robust 14% Petit Verdot. The PV gives a lot of ruby backbone for this wine to mature with.

The Pichon-Baron property lies across the road and has been managed by Christian Seely who happens to be English since 2001. It has a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon ranging from 65% up to 80%. The rest is mostly Merlot.

Another Pauillac property worth mentioning is the fabulous fifth growth Lynch-Bages which in good years like 2000 can be extraordinary.

The next district south is the approachable wines of finesse from St. Julien. These are not as famous or as big but have velvety rich fruit that is worth seeking out. The pricing is moderate in comparison to Pauillac.

Another classic show for the Old World guys! Thanks GV.

Thank-you for my birthday present. After all these years I am excited to find a phenomenon that I must have and share with others. My husband and I then my sons and a girlfriend. Then my sister. Her ex, a caterer.Former football coach. They bought me wine…good wine. We watch. We are hooked. We have seen maybe 4 or 5 episodes. Where have you been? We are with you now. Hey Gary, Great show. Love Bordeaux. QOTD: I went in BevMo with my oak monster T-shirt on, and one of the employees recognized the shirt and watches the show too. After talking with him, I found out he’s a lurker. I thought that was funny.

Pauillac RULES…thanks for the episode. Man, you always talk about how much you like Petit Verdot…, do not you think it’s about time that you’ve had an episode dedicated only to PV. I personally have not had a 100% PV and would like to see you trying some widely available ones with thunder potential…
QOTD: For the iPhone, I do not have a contest idea, but my suggestion is to give it as a present to the #1 fan of your show who has posted the largest number of comments so far…This person deserves it… and maybe if you announce that every 6 months you’ll be doing your statistics and rewarding the person who comments the most, then possibly you’d convert some of the lurkers..
    Cheers,
    GD

Sorry for not leaving comments, Gary. Truth is I watch the show over iTunes so I don’t have the comment page readily available when I watch the show…
Good luck with the Thundercats. Unfortunately, I don’t have anything to contribute as I was always a GI Joe fan myself…
As for the iPhone giveaway, how about choosing a random name from one of the posters in the comment section? Just pick a random show from an upcoming week and add those names in to a hat, then draw out a name. Winner! That should drive up your comments and hopefully lure some lurkers.

Just some random flotsam and jetsam, Gar. To add to the comments. Don’t really understand the angst there, what with thousands of e-mails coming in. And I find it gets tiresome trying to read all of 100+ comments for each ep.

Two guys who could afford cases of the last two wines would be Jobs and the CEO of the iPhone carrier (AT&T?). Maybe you could hit them up to donate an iPhone each so’s you could give away 3 of ‘em. And a MacbookPro, and…

So you’re moving on from the Vay-ner-chuk! How about doing the same for the “day” every time “de” appears on a French wine label? Try swallowing it as an inconsequential sort of word whisker. Hell, you Yanks are doing your best to eliminate “of” from the literature anyway. My $0.02 (CDN) contribution to “Reading Wine Labels”. (Just a “couple observations”).

    One last – Thundercats, meh!

QOTD: Clearly I’m not spending enough time talking about WLTV. I surely should have a funny story by now. Only poignant stories about T shirts I have to return but haven’t gotten around to doing it.

Another great show. Some more wines on my list to try.

QOTD: How about a photo contest for the most unusual location (maybe furthest from the Wine Library Store), display and/or use of a Wine TV Wristband or T-shirt? Of course you’ll have to weed out the scary people.

OK so here is a quick story about WLTV….

I work at a tasting room on the weekends and meet many people while doing so. Earlier this month I was pouring wine for a lady who was a local wine writer. Her and I began a fun conversation about local wines etc. I began to mention my Sacramento wine web site to her and she was very interested, in fact she wanted to link her blog up to my site. She then asked me if I have ever heard of WLTV because she thought I would enjoy the way Gary approached wine. All I had to do was hold up my arm and flash her the old school black WLTV wristband, I then poured her some Petite Verdot and said “this wine really brings the thunder!” …..TRUE STORY FOLKS

Great show can’t wait for the big announcement! Or the THUNDERCAT TAKEOVER!

Alright Gary, you win, the threat of not being able to watch you every night as I enjoy a glass of wine is too great, I can’t lurk in the shadows anymore. I have been watching since like episode 50 and even convinced my wife to comment for a while until she got a new job. How ’bout giving the I-phone to the person who guesses what the big announcement is? I mean, its gotta be a new and improved Cork’d.com right? Can’t wait, and I will use it!

Great show Gary. Bordeaux got me into wines; it was a 2000 Graves which name I can’t recall at the moment, and it was a revelation for my palate, I had no idea wine could be so good. My cellar now has wine from all over the world, and I love how a great bottle is able to seduce the senses. However, Bordeaux keeps calling me back.
    Cheers!

QOTD: WLTV is more than just a wine show – it’s a show about how to live life to the fullest. When I introduce the phenomenon of WLTV I tell people, “Even if you do not like wine you will gain wisdom.” Who else reminds us to tell our loved ones that we love them everyday? Who else can turn a beverage into a board game? Who else calls their grandma “Grandmammie”? GV: you do not just drink wine and tell people what it tastes like – you are a Life Coach!

I’ve got my parents wondering why I want to wear a wine library TV wrist band while I try odd wines from Spain while watching tasting notes on line with Gary Vay-ner-chuk …. it is an educational, entertaining whirlwind

    Gary –

Great show. Again. The Pichons rule… and it was great to see them being tasted side-by-side by someone who knows what they’re talking about and speaks my language.

You should do St. Julien next… Bordeaux rules!

Question: I have some 1975 Lalande that were actually re-corked in 1993 (it says so on the cork but the label is the same as the original Pichon Lalande 1975). It was acquired in Paris by my dad, from a reputable wine store. How often (and why) does that happen?

iPhone: include “name of WLTV member that recommended you to WLTV” as a registration question and give the iPhone to whoever gets the most votes in the next 30 days.

Good show Gary. I stumbled on WLTV a week or so ago, and big kudos! I’m at a point in my wine life where I have been seeking out old world wines-and your take on them enhances and offers a good bit of direction. keep it up!
BTW, being more of a college football junkie myself, any thoughts on what goes well with a Sooners gameday BBQ?

    Matt the Lurker

QOTD – this is a toughy. I really couldn’t think of a story, but I’ll tell you the truth. WLTV has turned me into a web blog geek and I have no interest in becoming one. Really. I spend enough time on the computer each day. I don’t need to spend more. But with the videos and the cork’d and the forms… it has sucked me in. Giant suck. Giant suck in a good way.

Geez, I used to be a lurker. Now look, I’m posting all the time. Suckity suck.

Very interesting episode, it’s interesting to hear about prime wines from the same region that are so different. Hearing about that jammy multi-fruit reduction made me drool! I can’t wait to try it, even for $65 bones. The problem i’ve had is that the bordeauxs that i’ve had have been consistently underwhelming. I can find spanish wines at half the price that bring alot more thunder. I want to second the thought of the earlier commenter who recommended a 100% petit verdot episode, I love the obscure grapes.

Fantastic show today, GV. I loved the shot with the cork in the end that stayed next to the lens! Sweet!

QOTD: I was just telling my wife at dinner tonight how I must be the only person around the city of Memphis, TN that watches the show. I would love to actually meet some people that watch and live somewhere around Memphis. I have told several of my friends about WLTV, but they don’t seem all that interested. I guess they don’t have the passion about wine that I do, but that is fine. Maybe one day I will live in a city where some other Vayniacs gather on a regular basis and we can all sit around and drink wine and talk about what makes it so fantastic!

hey gary, i’ve been watching for over a week now, and this is my SECOND post, so hopefully you’re not crying on my account.
i’ve only been drafted into the wine world for the past couple of years, and just recently have begun seriously experimenting outside of my standards (jammy jam zins, with some of your fruitier syrahs thrown in, mainly). also, i am a poor 31-year old cook in the restaurant business, so i have to keep an eye on the pricetags, unfortunately. and my palette, while great in the kitchen, still needs some fine-tuning for the subtleties of vino. anyway, just wanted to say thanks for all of the fantastic information and tips you make available to us all. it’s so helpful to actually see you taste and describe each wine first-hand – way better than a wine spectator review. i promise not to be a stranger. keep ‘em comin’!

Here’s a huge comment (and my contest idea) broken up into a few chunks; Gary, I hope that these four cents grow you into the beautiful flower that you want to become.

French wines scare me. It seems like they are generally expensive and then as they get into the $10 to $15 range I have the impression that the variation of quality is much wider than what you get from California in that price range. I could be totally wrong, I can’t say I’ve branched out much; from the 87 bottles I’ve recorded on CellarTracker, 47 are from CA and only 2 are from FR! Maybe it’s the labels, they all look the same to me and that’s just plain scary. I need to get on the ball and branch out. That said, I did try a Nebbiolo and a Pinotage (plus gave one as a gift) for the first time this week, just haven’t made it over to France yet (though I do have four bottles of ‘05 Bordeaux on the way, you’re changing my wine world).

  203. August 28, 2007

    Tommy Vernieri

QOTD: I wore my WLTV shirt to work last week (T-shirts at work? life as a programmer is great). A dude who I have never met before was walking by my desk just out of the blue and got super excited, “Man, that guy is awesome!” We ooh’ed and ahh’ed over the ‘Chuk for a bit and then he was off. Crazy to meet a fellow Vayniac out of the blue.

That’s a pretty weak story though, what would make it good is if I could get him and some of his Vaynerchuk-unaware friends to come to the delayed episode 300 tasting that I’m doing this weekend, and that leads me straight into to the contest.

  204. August 28, 2007

    Tommy Vernieri

You want a to raise the Vayner-warness of the collective consciousness but this is wine, people can’t really get it through some viral, electronic Web 2.0-me up campaign. They have to drink the wine—they have to smell the wine—anything else wouldn’t be true to the WLTV mantra, “You with a little bit of me….” The only way to have that spark is in the flesh with Vayniacs bringing their friends into the fold. People need to buy wine, drink it with their friends, and talk about the wine experience.

WLTV is a great facilitator for that experience—here’s the new contest:
You and the WLTV team pick about fifteen episodes that people can use as inspiration. They’ll be episodes that highlight a varietal, an appellation, a winemaking style, or just a Vaynerchuk attitude.
Your viewers, the Vayniacs, will buy some wine that fits into the themes of one of those episodes, drink it with friends and watch the episode together. They may taste the exact wines that you tasted; it’s much more likely that they’ll taste whatever is readily available at their local supermarket or wine shop and has some vague connection to the episode theme. Maybe they’ll all be sugary Rieslings and over-oaked Cabernets or maybe they’ll be perfectly balanced trocken gems and virgin vegetal varietals. It doesn’t matter whether the wine is “good” or “bad”; what’s important is that people will be trying wine with friends and introducing the people they care about to revolutionary WLTV way of thinking.
Having tasted some wine and talked about it, everyone gives back. To get credit for the contest and to really see the benefit of joining a wine-oriented community, everyone posts their thoughts on Cork’d or their own blogs, linking to the person who introduced them to WLTV and linking to the episode that they watched together.
Rinse and repeat. Friends introduce friends, everyone’s appreciation for wine grows, a winner is declared, and a prize that rivals the prize from the T-shirt contest is awarded to the contest winner.

Not edgy enough for you? Bonus points for people who join their friends in palate training and send in pictures or videos; double bonus points if it involves something that you can’t buy in the grocery store.

I’m eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the new Cork’d (and I really expect it to happen on Thursday), so this should tie in perfectly with that. I’m also a great candidate for iPhone since my cell phone screen gave up the ghost two weeks ago (it only shows white now) and I played with my friend’s iPhone when he was in town, getting me totally hooked (by the way the WLTV spreadsheet is not at all iPhone-friendly).

    Sup Gary,
I just fimished watching the episode on my ipod and i gotta say it was great to see u enjoying those last two wines! Well this is my first post and i gotta say i really love the episodes! I started watching after i saw you on Conan, cant believe he licked his sock! Well i told my friend Mike from NC , who is a displaced New Jersey Boy, about you since he is crazy about wine and he is also a Jet fan (What A Combo)! Well i gotta tell you i love the episodes and cant wait to see what else u gonna do.

p.s. I cant see any of the comments when i watch it on my iPod :(
Is it the same on a iPhone? Maybe you should give me one so i can find out! :)

  207. August 28, 2007

    Paulo P

the iPhone should come to South America. Gary, you would have a South American Corespondent, a voice for the WLTVN in Rio de Janeiro. An insider’s view on Local wines from someone that would, indiscriminately, flag his WLTVNC Press ID to get a free lunch at all the tasting in town. How cool is that?

    t_moderne

QOTD: How about my 11 year old over-hearing the sounds emanating from the laptop during a post dinner, evening watching WLTV, and exclaiming: “Who is that? I keep hearing this voice and it sounds familiar”. Upon seeing Gary Vay-Ner-Chuk, she asks for me to continue playing the 10 second introduction to the last 20 wine library tv episodes. Next thing i gotta do is make an audio loop of: “welcome eveyone to Wine Library TV, I’m your host Gary Vay-Ner-Chuk and this is the Thunder Show, Wine Library TV.”

alright good episode!! :) now YOU KNOW you gotta do Margaux….
I think I get the “sincerity” in a wine, that I love, that’s pretty much why I stay on French, Italian and German wine….
hmmmm damm I forgot the QOTD… sorry :( BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
PS: do not laugh at me for asking you to try a beaujolais :(

  210. August 28, 2007

GV, Thank you for going Bordeaux on us. You influenced a purchase of a Bordeaux tonight. I went with a Margaux though, the 04 Chateau Lascombes…killer bottle of juice!

Enthusiasm… Gary, you make me walking into a shop and buying a 64$ bottle of wine out of nothing! Maybe this was the answer of the QOTD? Brilliant show!

As always, a great episode. For those being Bordeaux, the prices are not bad at all. I think a lot of beginners have a misconception that Bordeaux, from an economic standpoint, is out of reach. Thanks for shattering yet another misconception and bringing the enjoyment of wine to the masses.

    Dear Gary
Have just discovered your site and love your enthusiasm and knowledge. I am from New Zealand, mainly famous for its Sauvignons and increasingly Pinot Noirs. I was recently reading Steven Spurrier in Decanter saying the Hawkes Bay Cabernet blends from New Zealand are the closest appoximation in the new world to those from Bordeaux. It would be good to see you compare say Te Mata Coleraine or one of the Craggy Range bordeaux blends with bordeaux wines in a similar price bracket, maybe some Chilean blends as well, avoiding the overblown Australian offerings.

    Matt H.

Like the episode. And I’m actually glad you omitted the Vay-Ner-Chuck. It shows you can keep yourself grounded and stay fresh. I’ve always wanted to get myself into wine and on the special occasion of my second comment I would just like to say, your site allows such a smooth transition for a lay person seriously interested in getting into the wine that it’s ridiculous. Thanks. I watch you a dime’s worth a week now.

    wildebeest

    Gary,

Today was the first day of the new semester. It’s going to be busier than ever, but I’m really excited. I’ve got a brand-new haircut, and I’ve even chopped the goat off. I wonder if you’ll even recognize me the next time I haunt a meetup.

I currently don’t have a cell phone at all, but I have to admit that if I won an iPhone, I’d be pretty stinkin’ psyched. However, I’d be happy to let my prize go to anybody who could enable WineLibrary to resume shipping to NV. That’s what I think you should use it for. And if it works, I’ll get you some new viewers myself.

I really like the wide-reciever/ballerina analogy. Sometimes your sports references seem a bit forced, but this one is a reminder of why you’re the best in the business.

Hmmm… the QOTD isn’t a question at all, but here’s a short one for ya: I went to a huge family gathering about a month ago, and I was wearing the “pickles” shirt. My grandpa, who’s really far-sighted, noticed the shirt, but was having trouble reading it. He began reading the back of it aloud, and when he got to your name, he sounded it out just like you usually do on the show: “Vayy – nrrrr – chuk” My girlfriend got a major kick out of that.

Quick note on lurkers. Growing up I watched just about every MASH episode, and every Monty Python episode (yes, I can recite every line). But I never wrote a fan letter. (snail mail, as we are pre Internet), but that does not diminish the love for the shows and the stars. To look forward to the next 300 WLTV shows I would keep the intensity Vay Ner Chuck, But maybe some more food pairings. Also a lesson on how to order wine out on the town. Gary goes for French Food episode. How about a Winelibrary secret discount with the code LURKER.
How about a go on the floor of Winelibrary and grab someone at random and ask why did you buy that bottle? Open it and taste it with them and maybe steer them to other choices (if not a great bottle).
Last if Wine Woot can have their own lable why can not the WLTV Nation?

QOTD: I started working in the tasting room of a winery recently (there’s a thread in VV about it…probably way back on the 3rd page by now) and in the past few weeks i have called in tons of my internet connections. at this point i have people in ontario wanting to import from us, people wanting to evaluate our event capacity, and TONS of people wanting to take a road trip up and taste @ my place.

This site has helped me access a key, unharnessed demographic for my employers. seriously, gary. thank you for the opportunities that your community has created for me.

    keep up the good work

Great episode.QOTD about 3 months ago I had mentioned WLTV to my sister, who enjoys wine but wasn’t what you call into it.However now on many occassions we’ve discussed episodes, and had laughs about the show and what not. I’m pretty sure she’s catching wine fever or at least a thirst for WLTV. Thanks Gary and WLTV crew.

Great episode, love wine from Pauillac, I will definitely seek out the Reserve De La Comtesse, it sounds like a winner and one that isn’t too out of the price range. As one who drinks Grgich and Caymus, etc… or should I say buy (I have a bunch in our “cellar”) I will have to buy the Pichon Baron and Pichon Lalande, maybe do a big tasting with the Grigich and one of the years of Caymus, not the special selection though.

QOTD: After the Conan show, friends emailing calling asking if that crazy guy on Conan last night is the wine guy that I talk about all the time.

IPHONE GIVEAWAY – I have no idea how to drag the lurkers out of the dark, but I will be racking my brain for ideas because OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH do I want an IPHONE.

    GREAT EP

QOTD: When some friends were visiting recently I showed them all WLTV and people seemed to find it funny that I watched a wine video podcast. I have subsequently found out that at least one of them has been watching it since. That may not be spreading the thunder at the rate at which you are but every little counts!

Keep up the great work – I love watching the show every day.

Doggone it! I just placed an order, got my cart all cleaned out and now I feel the need to put more into it. Why are we never happy with an empty cart?
I’ve never had any “Poo-Yak”, and now I must give it a “whirl”. Sometimes gaining knowledge is expensive!

The contest: If you want to reward loyalty, give the iphone to the Vayniac who’s been a customer the longest. Course, that’s not quite fair because not all loyal Vayniacs can purchase from WL.
Beats me. Maybe a random drawing of all Vayniacs. Maybe have us pick a number between 1 and whatever. I don’t know. I hate contests; TimF would probably win this one, anyway!!! ;)

Great show…again! Just don’t let the T-Cats steal the show! ;) Pichon Lalande is one of my favorite Pauillacs even though I do not get to drink them as often as I like. I will be sure to seek out the Comtesse though.

QOTD: I visited Long Island last weekend to see friends and family and of course the wineries. I was wearing my Oak Monster T-shirt when I walked into Roanoke Vineyards. I was being served by the owner’s wife and she was talking about the reviews on the Red Blend #1 and said and I quote, “This crazy wine shop owner in New Jersey who has some kind of internet tv show reviewed it and loved it.” I said was it this guy and turned around to show the Wine Library logo on the back of the shirt. She laughed. We talked about the Conan show, and she poured me a few “extra” samples.

    QOTD:
I was watching Diggnation…when you had your cameo and thought…hmmm…what’s this about…but then my 2 byte memory completely forgot about it until the 8/17 when Kevin “pownced” me with your link and the “D-UHHHH” / “OH YA” comments came flooding back…so I tore off and downloaded your feeds :D

Gary: I watch WLTV for its educational and entertainment value and appreciate both. I have De Long’s Wine Grape Varietal Table hanging right above my iMac so I can refer to it when you discuss one of the more obscure grape varieties. Perhaps you could do a few more programs expanding our horizons into Kadarka, Blaufrankisch, Auxerrois & Harslevelu, amongst others. Let’s see how some of those wines stack up against Cabs, Shiraz, Chards and Pinot Gris.

    Gary,

Your Pauillac tasting has me looking forward to trying the Pichons. Ratings and comments help me focus , but when a wine such as the Baron brings a smile of uncontrolled sublime satisfaction – I have to experience it also. That picture could never be conveyed in any written form.

Yu can’t go way now my first vlog was yesterday! Saw you on “Uncorked” My roommate and I have been looking for a way to “train” our taste buds and I think you’re vlog is perfect for that!

So, we’re still learning how this works, do you ever tell before hand what you will be tasting? If you did, we could buy the same thing and taste with you. Then when you explain what you’re tasting, we can recognize it with you. What better way to train the ‘buds!

Of course, we can always just watch older episodes…but then you won’t get those two cents…

SOOOOO happy you did a show on Puillac, especially these wines. i just bought a bought a bottle of 1996 pichon baron (birthday present to myself) and a 1995 of lynch moussas. the lynch will get drunk in the next year or so, the PB is for my 40th in 2015.
i think you are right, the 2004 is the last good buy in bordeaux. buy up the big boys, they made a lot of wine in 2004 and it is good. it will last longer than most of us can wait.
    bravo!
a slightly new approach this season. maybe it is #301 or the french wine, can’t be too enthusiastic in france, not so cool. anyhow, good enthusiasm but not embarrassing. still watch you though. it is these kinda shows that bring me back
    bravo bravo

QOTD: everytime i tell my friends who are getting into wine little, enough to go to the wine store and buy wine there and and talk to the guy, they want the link.

Great show, Gary! Love it when you get so excited over some good wines!

I have absolutely no experience with Bordeaux. I think it’s mostly because I have no idea how to pick them out. My fiancee got a Bordeaux favorite from a coworker of mine at her wedding shower. I cannot wait to share it with her and begin a new region of wines!

If I wasn’t getting married in a couple of weeks, I’d be all over a bottle of Pichon Baron! :-)

Great, educational show. Here’s to another 300!

QOTD: Wine has been pretty much my only hobby for the past several years. However, it has always been tough to get my friends passionate about it. WLTV has helped immensely – everyone I’ve introduced to the show now watches it every day. They say it’s because you can learn a LOT about wine and start to form your own opinions about it. Keep up the great work.

  239. August 28, 2007

Great QOTD and I’ve got a good one for you. My girlfriend was throwing me a surprise party and a friend of mine was distracting me during the setup. We had been at the lake with some other friends that afternoon and I was supposed to go meet her. My friend was coming up with other things for us to do and I was trying to come up with excuses to go home (but of course without letting my boy know that in actuality I was just afraid of getting in trouble). We stopped at his house and realizing I was going to have to wait for him for a few minutes I decided to watch part of the new episode of WLTV. He had never seen it but was getting into wine. It just so happened that the first wine you were doing was one that he had drank and hated (some Pinot Grigio in a funky looking bottle), he quickly proclaimed that if you didn’t hate it he would never watch again. You proceeded to rate it 45 points because it didn’t even qualify as wine. We proceeded forget about my angry girlfriend and the party and watched WLTV for an hour until my girlfriend called my buddy and yelled at him for not bringing me on time. We were late to my party but a new vayniac was born

Ok, QOTD for the IPhone Giveaway (No, I don’t want it):

Gary V is famous (notorious?) for his graphic descriptions of wines (e.g., imagine a bomb going off in a stable that hasn’t been cleaned in 7 years, and it burns a giant pig that runs off into a vegetable patch, getting covered in cherry tomatoes and green peppers, and then you dunk that pig in chocolate sauce, bite it, and chase it with a dill pickle).

So, the winner of the I-Phone Contest should be the person who comes up with the BEST DESCRIPTION of WLTV. Gary’s show is like . . . . .

  241. August 28, 2007

    Tallman

Gary, long time lurker giving you some comment love. As for the contest, a few other blogs I read have given away stuff by having people leave 1 comment (1 comment only per person) on the contest post and then they randomly pick from that list.

While this doesn’t really reward any one person, the word usually spreads pretty quick and brings a ton of people in.

Great show GV. Great timing for this show also. I was VERY lucky to particpate in a vertical this weekend of some great Bordeaux vintages (’82, ‘85, ‘89 and ‘90) that included an ‘89 Pichon Baron. Was great to get your insight on a recent vintage. In addition to Pauilac, we threw in some others (Graves – ‘85 Mission Haut-Brion) and Pomerol. Amazing how uniquely different each area and wine can be. Now a non-lurker.

    JerseyGirl turned CNY vaniac

QOTD: I’m new, so not too many stories (yet). BUT here we go on one: My friends have been poking fun at me for watching/listening to this blog all the time… so i finally got them to watch Gary on Conan. They thought it was HILARIOUS (of course)! So, i explained to them why Gary was making Conan eat all that crazy stuff, and they got interested… and now two or three of them are learning about wine and watching the show and are on the road to becoming Vaniacs! I totally win!

On another note: Gary, I must admit that I am totally guilty of buying based on label design when I want to try something new… I’m a graphic designer, so I’m drawn to the labels that are well-designed… and I figure, if i’m trying random new wines it’s a good way to figure out what i want to get. I would TOTALLY be interested in a show on buying blind, cause region, grape and label design are usually how i decide.

    I think that’s at least $.25 worth!

    Congratulations on the 301st episode
Hers my 2 cents since I have been watching (end of 2006, but have watched it all) lots has changed
I was not al all familiar with wine. I practically knew nothing but always hade a passion for wine. As a young kid I would squeeze grapes and put them in an empty soda bottle in the seller of our house and was always frustrated to find it a week later full of mildew
Any way thanks to you Gary I now am fairly educated and trying new bottles every week as you can see in my Cork’d account. I have also planted two Riesling vines in my back yard and hope to make my own New York Riesling

As for the iPhone. As someone has supposed you should have everyone rate a particular wine in there Cork’d account with flavor profiles (all entries should be in at a given date then gather all the results in a spared sheet) then you would rate that same wine on a show and the one with the closest ratings will be the winner
You will get lots of people to go back and watch as many episodes they can to learn how you rate and you will get them all to start Cork’d accounts which I think is the best part of WLTV and last but not lest you will be sold out of that wine

Hay and what happened to the Gravatar? I miss it!

Lurker coming out of the woodwork to leave a comment, I suppose two cents an episode isn’t a bad price for such a great show. :) Unfortunately I haven’t said anything and have been watching since a day or so after the Conan appearance. Cheers Gary, you make a fantastic, interesting show even though I’m 19 and can’t drink wine yet, and don’t even know anything about wine. Keep up the good work.

Iphone challenge. Give the nation a list of the twenty or so wines that you will be tasting next week and have the nation guess your palate, we have watched you over time and now we know our palate and your palate. OK, lurker no longer! All the second wines I’ve tasted out of Bordeaux, whether left bank or right, have not been worth the $$. Generally very tannic (they’re usually quite young) or thin. They’re a second wine for a reaon. I’d always recommend paying up for the first wine.

    Nice Pinot glass!!
I am still primarily a lurker but I’ll give you an idea for your I-Phone contest anyway: Have viewers recommend a wine that they like and that WL does NOT carry. Then, have a playoff of the top wines that you pick and the one that is the best will thus determine the winner of the I-Phone. You can have variations of this contest in the rules. For instance, only accept “regional” nominations: Texas, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, or gasp, New Jersey. Maybe you will discover some new wines that WL can carry as the result of this contest.

    gary,
love the show! the more i drink, the more i gravitate back to the old world. there is soooo much there, so interesting, complex and the second/third growths can be tremendous values….

couple of general comments — i know that you have a book in you, maybe 2, 3, 4….. anything brewing?

about the iphone. i agree with one of the others above, have a show based on suggestions of great finds. maybe its the vayniacs’ list of the best wines – sort of a WS 100 list. not just the best, but with other considerations… You taste, and you call the number 1.

    THAnks again.

ps, i am just opening a mixed case of Languedoc wines that I picked up at Wine Library on Sunday. Just searching the region…

…I was able to go to a tasting of the 04’s and 03’s of over 50 Bordeaux wines. Each had 03 and 04 to pour. I enjoyed so many of the 04’s over the 03’s and the majority of the Chateau reps did also.

QOTD.Some friends of mine telling me while “camping” they discovered and were watching vidcasts on line of some wild wine guy who does tastings on line. They loved it and couldn’t wait to tell me. My response was…You are now a Vayniac but don’t be a lurker! They still are ;)

Gary, totally enjoyed episode 301 , particularly your “intense” review of Chateau Pichon Baron 2004 and 2001. Besides giving the great detail about the nose, and flavor, I like how you matched it up to Parker’s reviews. This is important for me since very few bottles that I purchase are in the $65 to $75 range. This definitly makes it easier to approach purchasing a few bottles with less risk.

I have often let my dislike for the French cloud my palette. I seriously feel they export the expensive wines to the USA(because we are ALL rich) and keep the good, less costly wines in Europe. I am hoping your review of Pauillac can cleanse my palette so my wife and friends can get as excited as you when we uncork a ‘01 Pichon Lalande.

PS- Loved episode #122. I am a big fan of Calif-Cabs. Go Mondavi!!!

    Gary,

Top reasons why you had less than 200 comments for episode 300:

    1) Most were too drunk to post by 9 pm friday (me – we were on wine #6 by then)
    2) Too busy at Vayniac party to post (I was)
    3) Your singing. Nuff said.
    4) There’s actually only 4 people who watch the show. Your mom, Kahuna, TimF, and me. Your mom could only think of 190+ ways to say “gary is great” and “300 more.” She must really love you.
    5) Facebook crowd was too busy popping pimples and making fake ID’s.

The wines really were fun for episode 300. Thanks again.

QOTD: I love the epiosode with Sunday Mountain Sauv Blanc. -I can still remember my wife saying “he’s so obnoxious” – THEN laughing all the way to the end of the ep. The Voga episode was great too. Our research lab started watching daily after that.

    3000 more!!!

    GV,

Love the show and have watched since the first few eps…GV, Inspiration comes from with-in not from this blog….stick to your roots the ideas will flow…Don’t give away the i-phone, keep giving away your passion, that will “change the wine world”, and fuel the idea/”lack of love” void that you are feeling. I love wine and have gained so much from WLTV thanks so much!

    Gary,

WOW! What a show. I love it! I am First time Lurker, kind of sad to say, I missed 300 episodes. But, boy what a show to catch. Pauillac, presented well. I knew very little about the this wine. Maybe considered a newbie for foreign wines, but love them just the same. Domestics are a hobby, if not an obsession. Hopefully I can catch the old episodes.

And as far as the iPhone, maybe it would be nice if you gave it to me. I am a networker at heart and would do incredible marketing of your site (Which I just came across on a search and loved) amongst my friends, family, clients, and vendors (Many wine snobs, newbies and everything in between). Maybe it would go to the “Newest Viewer” of WLTV? I would tell EVERYBODY! Imagine that, anyone I come in contact with here in the West Coast or places I travel, will make a comment of my iPhone. And I would tell them who I got it from and all about your Library. How wonderful!

Don’t know if this will really happen, either way, Great Show. I’ll now continue to catch you on WLTV. Many thanks. -K

Great show! I love the additional “educational” emphasis…Bordeaux surely lends itself to an educational bias. Pichon Lalande was the second Bordeaux I ever tasted. I think it was the 1970. I loved it then…a real epiphany…and have probably bought more of it than any other Bordeaux through the years. I loved your Bordeaux descriptors. I could literally “taste” the wine through them.

Congrats on your first 300 shows! I’ll be stunned, and disappointed, if there are not thousands more.

This episode almost got me crying!

We have been to Bordeaux some weeks ago and where able to make a serious wine testing at Pichon Lalande (we have been blessed as we booked the regular but as they had a professional testing before they had far more bottles open than usual and not only the wine-tourist-stuff). We tested the reserve and the first for ‘01, ‘04 and (tadahhhaahh!) ‘05. And… we have been blasted away! We did some Chateau’s during the trip but this was exceptional. 04 is tremendous, 01 is special and slightly better but ‘05 is allready far better than the others. Belive everything people tell you about ‘05 (at least in this league). Well, and we realized we will not be able to afford this wine in the future. The Chateau refused to accept any reservations for the ‘05 and told us it will start at least with 200 € to the resellers (Gary, I hope WL can get some…).

So now for the next dinner (it will be an ‘impress your boss’ dinner) we will have open the comtesse and the baron as ‘04 side by side. I am very excited allready.

Get us more of this stuff Gary!!

QOTD: You can lead a horse to water … I’ve been trying to spread the love about WLTV like cheap wine …

I have two ideas about a contest 1) Show a picture of a vineyard and have people try to guess where it is. Give a clue each day until someone guesses the place in the comments section. Kinda of like the contest in travel magazines to identify a place from a picture. 2) taste a wine in a brown paper bag each day, you know the wine but the Vnacks don’t. Based on your tasting description alone see who can guess the wine in the comments section. Change wines each day and give the answer of the previous day’s wine.

Good episode, enjoyed it. I like the plum wrapped in bacon, sounds delicious.

Contest idea: I don’t have one.

QOTD: I abhored alcohol up until the moment I was introduced to WLTV and Gary Vaynerchuk, at which point my position changed and I became a huge devotee to the wide wide world of wine! Now I tell all my friends who like wine about it, and have gotten people from every different part of my life interested in WLTV too!

Gary, sorry I couldn’t watch yesterday and have to leave my comment late. By the way, it’s good to hear that you read the comments. We need to hear that from time to time. I know you are inundated by comments and emails and can’t respond to everything, but as you often say, it’s all about community. So we need to know that our comments are read, not just counted, as much as you need the comments to keep coming. (Do you also read the comments that show up very late? Would it be worth leaving comments when I watch old episodes from before I became a regular viewer?)

I found this episode very interesting. I haven’t been all that keen on Bordeaux lately, but you convinced me to give them another try. I certainly have enough of them in my basement. Unfortunately, we have let most of them age for longer than we should have, due to misunderstandings about what wines to age and for how long. The really high end Bordeaux will age for a very long time, but I couldn’t (and can’t) afford those. For the lesser Chateaux, I find that aging really brings out the green pepper component, and my wife and I aren’t so fond of that. I know you like that, though. I have some 1978 Lynch Bages that has massive green pepper. Come over for dinner next time you are in Chicago and we’ll crack open some bottles.

QOTD. I wish I had a funny Wine Library story, but at the moment all I have is a sad one. I have a niece and a nephew in New York who are interested in wine, but are inexperienced with it and have very little money. (They were CKC’s until only recently.) Trying to persuade them that good wine doesn’t have to be prohibitively expensive, I had Wine Library send each of them a box of inexpensive wine that you had reviewed favorably. Also, trying to make Vayniacs out of them and to start some conversations about the wine, I emailed them with links to the episodes where you had reviewed each wine. Unfortunately, a few days later their father fell seriously ill. We are hoping for a full recovery, but he is on a long and difficult road, and wine is the last thing on anybody’s mind right now.

    Hey Gary –

Since you need all those two cents, I’ll chime in FOR THE FIRST TIME. That’s right, Gary, you just won over another LURKER! Great episode, really enjoyed it. I’m enjoying how accessible you’re making wine to people who weren’t into it before.

I really enjoyed my first trip to WL a couple weeks ago, you have a fantastic store and your employees did a great job helping me out. I knew you’d have a tremendous selection of wine, but I was amazed by the gourmet department, I picked up some killer cheese to pair with wine.

One thing I’d really like to see in the stores or on the Thundershow is Richard Hamilton wines – they’re a great Australian producer with both a single vinyard reserve line at about $30, and a regular line in the $15 range, both reds, red blends and whites. I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on the Centurion Old Vines – maybe as part of an episode on “old vine” wines. I’m very interested in the effect of the age of the vines on the wine. Many of the Rioja vinyards I’ve read about recently stress the age of their plants, and I wonder how much of this is competitive marketing (because they have the old vines and other growers don’t!) and how much is fact grounded in science.

A good idea for one of the next 300 episodes? I think so!

My boyfriend is active duty in the Army with a busy schedule, so he doesn’t watch Wine Library TV. We watched an episode together one day a few months ago when he was on leave, and he loved it! He still quotes “GV” to me all the time. He asks me if the wine I’m drinking brings out the Oakmonster. I always share the new “GV” jokes with him – Our personal favorite is the Oak Kangeroo.
Thanks for such a great show.

QOTD: I don’t really have a funny WLTV story, so instead, here is the World’s Funniest Joke (according to wikipedia – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World’s_funniest_joke):

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy’s voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?”

    Gary,

I never have posted here. I often post on the forum. Since Gary is begging us to post, I am posting!

Pauillac makes some wonderful wines. I have drank the Reserve de la Comtesse many times over the years. It has been a great buy. Pichon Baron used to be cheap in the early days of my wine drinking ($10-12). Even at 60 bones it is a winner. Pichon Lalande used to be well under $20, too. I miss those days.

As for contests and phones, I would have a treasure hunt: “Find the Phones.” Put a picture of the phone on the html page with a specific wine. Put it out there for 1 or say even 10 (or whatever number) of wines in your inventory. The first person who finds and then cuts and pastes the URL for 1, 3, 5 or all 10 (or whatever number) of the places you put the phonme picture with the wine bottle and emails it to you wins. The contest would start at a predetermined time.

Something that I have been wanting to see is the GV Score on wines when I go to the store. I was thinking a way to increase numbers would be have a Bottle Tag and/or a Shelf Tag that the nation can print out and post in my local wine shop and grocery stores that will point people to Wine Library TV for the video review of that wine. It would both give someone a score and a great informational video. I can badge you up on my website and I would like to badge you up at my local stores.

QOTD: I see one of my subordinates on his break on WLTV. As I walk by he quickly changes the webpage to something else. When I ask him what site he was on (to bust his chops), he reluctantly tells me. I laugh at his momentary discomforture, then we have an hour and a half conversation about wine (thankfully a slow day). He now has his wine shipped to work, a. knowing that there is always someone there for the signature, and b. so his wife doesn’t find out how much he spends on wine. She once called from the lobby, to visit him at work and I had a hearty laugh as he frantically hid several bottles of wine about the office.
I now joke with him when he is on vacation that I will test all his WLTV shipments to make sure they are OK for him to drink….

In any case, I’ve been mentioning your efforts to work associates, and also friends who enjoy wine.

What I’ve learned is that there are lots of wine enthusiasts out there, and new enthusiasts at that (myself included), so it’s a wonderful thing to be able to refer fellow wine fans to a great resource such as this.

    Hi Gary,

great choice of wines for the show but……….. 26 plus minutes is getting too long. Whatever happened to those 15 minute Thunder shows????

What would be a cool theme is to compare a similar rated wine from different towns of Bordeaux to compare and contrast the predominant flavor characteristics of each, say a Margaux, St Estephe, Pauillac and St Julien (maybe even a Pessac-Leognan).

Can you contact a restaurant in advance, order the wine, and have them decant it? Say 3 for 4 hours in advance? The decanting episode is key, and I’ve been tasting wine un-decanted, and decanted and have noticed the drastic changes. I hate going to restaurants and have the wine experience suffer, do to lack of time in the decanter, even if the wine is only 40$. Have you ever done this? Ever heard of anyone doing this? Will restaurants refuse? Umm.. what else, good show, enjoyed it much. And my girlfriend nailed the eggplant comment right before you said it.Loyal, ex- lurkers indiana and ces

I was cleaning out the lobby at work and decided to bring home some of the old magazines to read. Read the article about your show in Time magazine. As someone who was a bartender and server for a decade and someone who loves wine, I figured your show would be good for me to watch, and it sounded like it could be entertaining as well. IT WAS AWESOME! My Husband loved it too! We’re flat broke right now, but I can’t wait until we can purchase some of your recommendations. We’ll be watching daily, but we download the podcast – it’s easier for us that way, but that also means it’s a lot more work for us to come comment on EVERY show. So we’ll be some of those dreadfull lurkers, but don’t worry, if we ever stop loving the show we’ll let you know.

Oh well! Next time you can include another bottle in the pack for loosening up the crowd before the show. Sort of the “fluffer” wine, if you will :-P

    Keep Changing the Wine World.

These “horizontal” tasting episodes are the way to go !!! They keep FOCUS on a region and/or year, really ideal !

On a recent 04 Bdx BLIND tasting I attended, Pichon Baron 04 was “2nd place”, behind Le Gay 04 only. Cheval Blanc 04 was 3rd (too young, but will surpass both in 10 years).

    Pls do more HORIZONTALS !!!

Simply awesome show! There is nothing – I mean, NOTHING – that can compare with great Bordeaux for my palate. I loved this show!! I got jazzed watching GV get excited about the wines – it’s a beautiful thing. :-)

QOTD: My personal favorite WLTV story actually happened a couple of weeks ago. I was playing softball in a Sunday church league and wearing my WLTV wrist band. After the game, one of the guys on the other team stopped me and said, “I LOVE that show!”. We’re making friends in the wine world, too! (Important factoid: Yes, my team won the game 23-15.)

    Gary,
Keep up the amazing work. I’m learning a lot. We have about 1000 wines in our cellar. My husband is great at describing wines (he keep note books of all wines we drink and refers back to them a year later when we try the same one) but I struggle to find the words to describe. You are a great teacher for wines now I can go down to the cellar and pick out a wine I use to just pick it out by the label.

    Peace,
    Brook

    Hey Gary,

Picho Baron rules. As Estournel. I’m not a great Contesse Lanande fan, but it is also a very decent bottle.

Congrats on the episode. You have no idea how much those things cost down here in Brazil. At least 5 times more than in the US…. It’s depressing..

    Cheers,

    Eduardo

First off, GV, good to see you injecting a touch of realism into your Jets mania. Great to be a fanatic but being blinded by fanaticism gets old, and boring, fast. The wines were interesting and as always, the show is better when you truly are into the wines (funnier when you hate them, but…).

QOTD: Dinner at some friends house on Saturday. I brought the wine and this started a conversation that worked its way towards WLTV. One of my friends had a friend who interviewed “the owner of Wine Library”. I asked if it was Sasha Vaynerchuk. They said that the name sounded familiar and that he was a “total media whore”. “OK. That was GARY Vaynerchuk. He’s the guy that does WLTV, the video blog that I always watch”. No way your dad comes off like that!

    Gary,

Awesome show! No can do it (wines) like the French!

Been watching since around show #285…like to watch more…but those time constraints ;-(

Thanks for the factoids about 2004 Bordeaux and the value.

Glad to be a rookie Vanyiac!!

2004 and 2001 are the vintages the discerning buyer will pursue rather than the 2005.
QOTD: I emailed a friend to watch the last Amarone episode, went to his home for dinner that weekend. He opened an Allegrini because he disagreed with your low score and wanted to re-taste it together…yes

First time to see the show. Great show on Pauillac #301. You should offer the shows on DVD (1-100, 101-200, etc.) for review or for sale for newbies. Also you need a button where I can printout the wines for that show with ratings, pricing, and some comments. Great work.

Way to go, rooting for Bordeaux. I’m definitely more of an Old World wine gal (especially cause I lived in France for awhile), so I appreciated this show. Thanks for the tips on the solid, but not overly priced vintage years…I’ll have to search some of the thunder bringers.

QOTD: Just have to give you props for (indirectly) helping me get a job at a wine shop in Madison, WI cause I gave a shout out to you in my interview there. Just started and very pumped to be in this world, helping people choose wines, taste ‘em, and let ‘em know about your show.

    Keep on bringing the thunder!

Just checked my Bordeaux collection its at about 40% (Poy-Yack) pretty high considering there are 9 (out of 27) serious appelations in the Gironde. I almost popped my one and only ‘01 Pichon Lalande to sip along with you but since its pizza night..nagh. I’ll do a replay when I do.
I know what you mean about labels, my wife buys ANYthing that has a dog, cat, horse or crab on it. She drinks, and likes, this stuff called Blue Crab that tastes like the Kool-Aid pitcher guy took a drunken wiz in a bucket of vinegar. But then again she dunks her lump crabmeat into cider vinegar at crabfeasts, so there’s no accounting for taste. Hey! she married me. At least I don’t have to tell her to “Leggo my Margaux!”

Serious wines, serious review, I so need to try some good Bordeaux. Loved the Cork action, well aimed.

QOTD – My better half (significant other, she who must be obeyed etc) used to jump up as soon as she heard your opening lines “HELLO EVERYBODY….” and join in with the rest of the intro, it was very funny to watch. However recently you’ve been posting the episodes so late (for the U.K.) that she’s asleep on the sofa by the time you’re on.

Loved the tasting on Bordeaux. It took me back to my days there and late night drinks at the Burdigala bar asking the bartender (Jean) for his best cognac. Pauillac is such a special place. I totally relate to your excitement from the last wine in the episode. Great work!

QOTD: Gary, I’ve been evangelizing you and the show since almost the beginning. Lots more people are getting into quality wines than ever before and need a guide – a sherpa, if you will. Though I emphasize using their own palettes, I always recommend your show as fun, interesting, and informative. Here’s to many hundreds of more episodes!

    Good episode.

    QOTD: Sorry I have none.

    My 2 cents:
What about the Languedoc ? I think it deserves more
attention because there is so much good stuff there.

Whenever I run into someone from Morris County, my natural question is if they know the Wine Library. They usually do, but are also usually ignorant of the WLTV aspect. So I become a WLTV cheerleader. It’s group dynamics after all.

With this in mind, perhaps we can vote on which episodes would best get a newbie hooked. I personally think it would be one with a combination of raves and pans and some variance from Parker and Spectator.

Perhaps a dedicated, easy-to-remember URL with links to a few prime point-of-entry episodes might prove to be worth the trouble.

Thank you for the amazing show. I feel it’s fate that you tasted the ‘04 Pichon-Baron and I watched it today. It goes on sale locally today and I’ve been drooling over it every time I see it. I guess it’s time to pull the trigger.

stumbled upon your website while searching Pauillac – and subscribed immediately.I googled Pauillac because: Im a South African wine lover teaching English in Hong Kong at Lan Chi Pat Secondary School and we are involved in a Chinese-French exchange program – thanks to a famous opera singer and a great wine from Pauillac!!! Our students are off to France on May 1st and will be guests of St Jean school in Pauillac. Unfortunately I won’t be joining them although I have the honour of preparing them for this wonderful experience.
How about trying some of South Africa’s famous wines on your show? My personal favourite is Diemersfontein Pinotage.

QOTD: This funny thing happened much later on. I attended the
500th show live from Crushpad in San Francisco. After having
Gary sign my book and meeting him only once. During the 500th
show he asked if in the 2nd wine andbody could smell the vanilla.
I raised my hand and Gary replied,”Thanks, Doug.” Now I am forever
referenced in the 500th episode of WLTV.
