Ian, nice job. But Gary, don’t scare us like that! Ian was just a little too good for comfort. At least you know you have a good stand-in when you’re away, though.

I’ve been in love with albarino since 2003 myself. I’m hoping CA gets the message and experiments with it some more. Glad to hear about your involvement with this one…looking forward to tasting it.

Ah, the BIG news…very interesting. I am intrigued. Sign me up for being a part of it. Well, as much as I can be from NJ/NY. I mean, why the F not? Looking forward to maybe meeting some more Vayniacs…

I’m either firewalled out here at work, yeah still….
    or bandwidth issues.

But I take it from the comments that we have a new host on WLTV?
And perhaps a wine club akin to ‘Les Amis du Vins’?

    I’ll try from home later…

  70. August 30, 2007

    Robert R.

I almost made the top 5. But i watched the episode first. Great show GV!!!! Seriously for a second i thought there was a new host.. ;) Im exicted about Vayniac Cab.

    Gary, Man….
You’ve always been a hero. Now you are truly a bruddah! Purple feet and everything!!! I hope I get a chance to grab a drink with you when you are working on the wine. It takes a lot of beer to make a great wine!
    Cheers!

Wow! That’s fantastic news. It’s definitely not what I expected, but I’m excited to see what comes of the Vayniac wine. I’ll definitely be buying some :)

Excellent call!!! Does anyone in the US do barefoot pressing?

  78. August 30, 2007

    BruceP

Thought this might be it. You let this idea slip when i saw you that tasting night about a month ago in Napa. Sounds like a lot of fun. I’ll be in. Already doing a Crushpad wine for Russian River Pinot Noir, but there’s always room for Cabernet as well.

Please don’t hold the kick off the last weekend in October! I have to be down in L.A.

  79. August 30, 2007

NASCAR Wine? Is that even possible? If you can take a case of beer into the track, can you take a case of wine? Might need it in a plastic bottle. MD 20/20 anyone?

  83. August 30, 2007

    Dapolousa

GOod job but I think this is for me… no more watching for me. Sorry Gary but you were the personality. See ya on the website.

  84. August 30, 2007

As for Albarino, at its best is it bracing in acidiy: perfect for seafood and not so much for a walk-around wine.

And what about Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne?

  85. August 30, 2007

    Orion Slayer

AWESOME!!! It will be great to “make a wine” with Gary and the Vaniacs! Dude, even if the wine turns out to be a PaZZZZ, the experience will more than make up for it. Thanks, Gary. Beyond any expectation.

Watching the multiple false announcements was like watching the end of “Murder by Death.” If you watched the movie, you know what I mean.

  86. August 30, 2007

YEEAAAH!! Now the real question! What do I get in reward for posting the first comment on this momentous occasion?? Now that I watched the episode I can lave a real comment. What a great and unique announcement,I would definately love to get in this if I can afford the flight out on my CKC budget. We should commision an artist for the label ala Mouton-Rothschild..just a thought. I don’t know if 500 cases is going to be enough for the Vaynernation. Now, to get back to my homework after I just spent the last three hours refreshing the winelibrary page.

  98. August 30, 2007

    Roo

Wow. In my biz that’s what we call a “deep tease”. Neat idea gary – good luck with it and thank GOD you’re still doing the show (although I must admit I squealed like a little girl when I thought you were going to the foodnetwork…oh well…)

Love the Napa montage. Love albarino too. Oh heck, love it all!

    Awesome idea GV!

I can’t wait to be a part of the process and share in the experience. I am not disappointed at all!

I still think you would be awesome on Food Network!

  101. August 30, 2007

    Gustasopher

Pretty cool but somewhat of a letdown b/c (1) i can already make and bottle my own wine at a local store–no this doesn’t include picking the grapes, barrel sampling, etc.; and (2) Napa is way to far for me to travel to pick and crush grapes for some wine. Just to be clear: this is SOMEWHAT of a letdown not a COMPLETE letdown. It is a new idea in the wine world.

  102. August 30, 2007

    TomW

GV, You are the man! what a concept. I might have to make the drive over from las vegas. It only about what 7-8 hours? I think its worth it.

Gary, no disrespect to the other guy but don’t ever kid about you being replaced as the host of WLTV. You scared the crap out of me.

About making our own wine… that ROCKS! I’ve been looking for an excuse to come out to the West coast. I’d love to help with making the wine. I’m totally in for buying some of it.

Oh oh oh… and that Black Pig sounds good.

Ian, you did a FANTASTIC job! I feel as if I know you, as many times as I’ve emailed you. :)
Gary, congrats on the Black Pig. Another wine I must try; especially if it goes well with chili. Fall is around the corner and so is October and so is San Fran!! yes!!
I must go and open a bottle of something!! Cheers!!

Awesome announcement. I have been making wine for years, have helped a couple of new wineries on harvest day, but have never participated in the entire process of a commercial venture. I’m all in.

Michael Brill has been so successful, what a great partner.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (with a thousand exclamation points)

Another idea, another page in Vayniac history, way to go. To be part of the inaugural release of this wine would be a feather in any Vayniac heart. Good luck to all who participate as I’m sure it will be history in the making. You the man Gary…………

Almost NEVER. Your the greatest and I know that 500 cases is going to be gone in a flash. Just unbeleavable…………

    Great news, Gary!!

I don’t mean to be a douche, but is there any chance that you could hook up a special kosher-run of the Vaynerchuk-Chuck? That would make it a true community wine.

  126. August 30, 2007

    Run PMC

Nice, though you teased me. I thought MA opened up for shipping. Yeah right, our tight a$$ puritan state. ;)

DUDE!!!!! GARY!!!! This is a better announcement then i could have ever imagined!!!! I will be at every party and every step of the process along the way. Hell you can even stay at the inlaws house with me when you go to Napa to pick the grapes. I am super excited and will be buying this wine for sure. I wont be one of the top 5 to purchase because i am not a baller (i wish i could) But i will buy the most that i can. I cant wait to meet you and speak with you about the “wine world” it will be fun. I have helped my best friends family pick grapes and go through the whole wine making process. And if you ask me the vino turned out great. It is worth all the hard work, sweat, and tears in the end!!! I cant wait to be a part of this!!!! Thank you a TON Gary for doing what you do day in and day out and for coming up with something this over the top and great. The vaynernation appreciates it!!!!!!

P.S. I am going to buy some of the black pig too :)

Finally, the dream come true. I have a degree in horticulture and always dreamed of working in viticulture.

Even though I don’t live in CA, don’t have lots of “bones”, I am withdrawing some from my nest egg, finding cheap airfare, leaving the Midwest behind to join in the fun. I want to get down and dirty in the vineyard, the crush …. gotta take a breath, so excited.

Get those fall dates so I can make plans.

Knew there was a reason for my purple passion!

No QOTD? How about this: How long will it take to sell out of all 500 cases? 10 minutes? 3 minutes? Awesome episode today, although I thought your big surprise was going to be that your brother turned 21 and was going to be your new cohost. Sorry AJ, maybe you can start a Liquor Library TV show so you don’t compete with Gary.

  138. August 30, 2007

Gary, this idea of yours is Phenomenal! Good luck. I’m in for at least a case now that we can have wine shipped to Indiana without fear of the secret police (read: ATF) busting down the door for having a case of vino shipped to our door!

    >He didn’t buy the Jets!

BUT this is a good step. A lot of money on the wine product end of things. You’re going to own the whole channel Gary… great way to make enough to buy the jets. Just try to get in there before that little J.E.T. kid comes of age.

Seriously… great announcement. Congrats to the Crushpad folks. They have a great service/thingy going on, and this will get them some good exposure and USE.

’still looking forward to those Cork’d updates. We need something to put a little fire under us at WineLog ;) BTW, I got a wristband. My cats love playing with it.

    Peace.

Great idea! Though I’m sad everything will be happening out on the West Coast – how about a second launch party for your friends in the NY/NJ area??

I feel like this is going to get sold out pretty quickly… hope I make it in for at least 6!

Sweet. Great idea. I’m excited. If I could, I would go to California for the crush, but sadly cannot. I will buy some though.

So a little story about the big lead up…I’ve had a pretty stressful week and was kind of sick of waiting around with bated breath for a big announcement from a guy who tells us not to listen him almost every other day, so I said to myself, I’m sure I’ll find out about it in good time, and left the office to run some errands before going home. I got in the subway at 34th St and half way to 23rd I realize that I was the last one out of the office and forgot to lock the door so I have to turn around and go back. When I got back to the office, I figured I may as well turn my computer on to see if the show was up yet, and it was completely worth it.

  148. August 30, 2007

    Greite

Disappointed??? No way. This was one time that the event was worth all of the anticipation leading up to it. This is a great idea.

Way to go Gary V !!!!!!

Won’t be able to make it to CA for the crush, but I’ll be ordering some bottles.

  149. August 30, 2007

Garagistes! Count me in! Great concept and an interesting way to see the wine process from beginning to end. It’s a bonus if you live in the bay area. My wife and I have visited Sonoma and Napa during Crush (actually going there this weekend). There’s a whole lot of work that goes into the bottle and the whole valley smells like grapes. Gary has sourced some good fruit so it should be some fairly decent juice. Communal wine is a concept that I’m sure Beam Wine Estates and Constellation Brands hopes tanks. We’re making our own, wheter they like it or not. Sure hope it doesn’t suck!

  152. August 30, 2007

    VinoVixen

GV-this is awesome….great idea. Donald Troup should be jealous he did not think of it first…..pre-sell the wines to generate revenue….initiate Vayniacs to work the harvest…..Funny enough, I was in the process of contacting wineries in my own state to volunteer for the harvest season. I was also planning a trip to Cali in the fall. I can only image how fun and exciting this will be. Cheers!

  153. August 30, 2007

As a frustrated wanabe winemaker I would jump at the chance to do something like this. I know there are ‘programs’ you can take which run one thru the wine making process but this would be much more fun being with people that are a bit off…if you know what I mean! Can’t wait for the details.

    Good job Gary.

cool.. great idea. you can count me in for some of it. I’ve been dying to get back out to Napa/Sonoma. Maybe this is the reason I needed. More than likely, I won’t be able to get out there for the early Feb/March event since I will have a few week old baby but maybe for one of the other dates. Congrats on all of your success. You look like you are living your dream. It shows. We all watch your show because of your enthusiasm. It shows. GO COLTS!!

Great show. I think this idea will turn out good for everybody. Good luck. I can’t wait to purchase some and try it. We just returned from Napa and San Franciso but we’d love to return again for this special occasion. Kudos on a brilliant idea! Because with a little bit of you and a lot of us – we’ll turn out a spectacular “Vayniac Cabernet!”

  163. August 30, 2007

Congratulations to us! Can’t wait to get my hands dirty. I’m just wondering how there’s going to be any wine left to bottle after all the Vayniacs get into the barrel samples…

  164. August 30, 2007

    Taco John

Great idea, and good to see it’s something in keeping with the theme of the show. I’m certainly buying at least a bottle, maybe I can get in for a case. I need to start drumming up some interest where I can be the point person for a ton of wine…be one of those five.

  165. August 30, 2007

Wonderful concept, and one that validates the WLTV logic. Really impressed with your creativity and passion. Looking forward to being a component of the final effort.

  167. August 30, 2007

    Jake

Definately will be getting some of that Albarino. Congrats.

The Crushpad-Vayniac-community-wine-project seems cool. Definately in keeping with the idea of wine bringing people together, and it may be another step in “changing the wine world”. For one thing, the project will more than likely get some press. It would be nice to get into the vineyard and get your hands dirty and really be part of the process, although I could probably have that experience much closer to home in some of the vineyards around here, I don’t know.

But how much fun would it be tasting and blending and creating a bottle of wine with Vaynerchuk!

  168. August 30, 2007

Snooze (j/k)…I’m going to go watch the Giants game.

    J Crazy

ROCK AND ROLL!! Yeah! Now this is what I’m talking about. BUT?? How can a kid from over here in Japan get invovled. I’m definitely buying some cases but let’s think of how all the Vayniacs living over seas can get involved? I’m sure all the International Vayniacs, let’s call them IVs, are super excited as to how they too can be involved in something so special.

  170. August 30, 2007

    Marz

Outstanding, Gary! I think the buildup matched the event! Somehow I will be a part of this. I’ll at least buy one more bottle than Chris Mott ;)

  171. August 30, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

F Yeah, GV. I’m in too. Can’t wait to see the price (hope it’s $40 or less per bottle, in keeping with the Vayniac, communal feeling). Don’t know if I can make it to SF for the barrel tasting though. Maybe you could arrange for a barrel to go on tour to a few major cities around the country for participating Vayniac tastings – sort of like the Stanley Cup of wine. Probably wouldn’t help the sediments, but maybe just part of a barrel – or a mini barrel or something. :)

  172. August 30, 2007

    macca

The big news is pretty awesome Gary. Definitely in. I may be jumping the gun here but this would be an awesome opportunity to test out the whole cork vs screw-cap thing and see what the difference is over time. There’s my $0.02 for you.

Gary, I love the idea! The question is: How is it our wine? Are we going to be making money off of it too? Hahahaha. Yeah, right. It’s YOUR wine with a little bit of us! Nonetheless, I am cool with going to Napa and getting my hands dirty. Me and Jorge will design the label, I am pretty sure we’re gonna win the contest. Cheers, G.V. Always loved u, always will!

  187. August 30, 2007

Community wine = fantastic news! I love the idea of focusing on the process and community interaction in addition to (or maybe even more than) the resulting wine.

Haven’t read all the other comments yet, so what I’m about to say may be a repeat, BUT: Wouldn’t it be great if (server/bandwidth capacity permitting) the barrel sample tasting was a WLTV live episode–and folks who had barrel samples shipped to them could taste along with you and those lucky enough to be there in person?

And speaking of barrel tasting: I’d LOVE to have that opportunity. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and I’d enjoy it the most if it involved a barrel of juice I had a hand in making.

And about having a hand in the making: I was just telling a coworker, “Geez, I have all these ‘07 vacation days to use up between now and my birthday… I need to plan a cruise or a coffee plantation visit or, I dunno, a week of running away with the circus.” Now I can add “a few days makin’ wine” to my list. Fabulous! We’ll see if I manage to take any time off.

Even if I can’t get hands-on involvement (because I’m in Chicago instead of California), I’m definitely in for hands-off involvement–and at least 2 bottles (heh, probably more) will grace my home.

No disappointment from me. The announcement was worth the wait!

  188. August 30, 2007

    Brant

Fantastic idea!! As an addict of the show from almost the beginning this is definitely a great idea and has been worth the wait. Nice payoff. I’ll say this for GV the guys a marketing genius and right now he is firing on all cylinders – I’m definitely in for at least a few bottles. But since I’m from the northwest he’ll regret not using Walla Walla fruit. Nonetheless, this is a homerun and congratulations.

Good stuff, Gary — and for someone who lives around the corner from Napa, I’m excited about the potential to be involved in most of the process. That being said, really thought you might throw your support to one of the unheralded varietals, like, say albarino (something about which I am in total agreement, though people probably think both of us are crazy.) Perhaps that is down the line once the cab serves as a proof of concept.

Macca, if you want to see the diff. between cork and screw cap, go to winespectator.com. Michel Laroche (from Domaine Laroche) talks with WS’s editor, Bruce Sanderson, about the exact same wine – bottled with a cork and a screwcap. (You may need to be a subscriber to watch the video.) It was a side-by-side of 2 bottles of Laroche’s Chablis St. Martin 2002. They tasted both, and said the screwcap retained a lot more fruit and freshness, but didn’t age with as much complexity. They don’t think a screwcap would be a great closure beyond about 5 years, for wines that require longer ageing, because oxygen transfer is a necessary part of the process, and that’s what cork is best at. Who knows….

Forgot to comment on today’s wine! Love Albarinho, one of my favorites. However, I think you’re wrong when you predict big things for it here in the U.S. Not enough of it planted over here. All the fad wines have solid vineyards stateside. Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot, Syrah…

Nope, mark my words – the next Big Thing will be Viognier.

Outstanding GV; congratulations. I’ve gotta say that if anyone is disappointed by this announcement they are a serious tool, seriously.

  232. August 30, 2007

Also, great production on the vineyard footage and announcement.
I had to watch this episode AGAIN it was so good.

Great news Gary! I’m interested in this new community wine. Even though I am in the East, not on the west coast, I can’t wait to follow the Vayniacs wine journey….

  234. August 30, 2007

    portland guy

Guess I’m a ’serious tool’ — while I think the project is most interesting, it doesn’t match the hype. Not sure if anything could have. Judging from all the positive responses, I guess my drizzle on your parade won’t dampen your enthusiasm.

  235. August 30, 2007

    PapaMike

Should be fun! Can’t wait for the deets.

  236. August 30, 2007

    OH what!
    NO Ian?????

Damn just love the hands flying all over and he is cute!
Then Tooooo bad you didn`t hook up with the food network…….
But then again like I told my DH this vineyard that you get in the states even tough you are not found of California wines is this big surprise so I guess I was On the money!
OR,,,,,,,,,, should I say YOU are on the Money no wait IN THE MONEY! You lucky Bastard! Can I say That? Did I say that out loud? Well, this worked because you pulled me back in! And I oh OHHHhhhh so want a part! I need to build up my body it `s going down fast. So put me to work!

  237. August 30, 2007

Community wine?? How cool is that? Didn’t see that coming. Innovative. Kudos. I’m in.

Always good to see part of the Wine Library team. IAN.

EXCELLENT! Even better than any possibilities I could speculate. Count me in! May the Flying Spaghetti Monster bless you Gary. Arrrrrrhrhrhr!! I’m so excited, I’m going to contain myself and not make any avian allusions to Sept 16th. (This time.) Way cool. And thanks for the wristband – just got it today! Photos to come shortly.

    Ivan C.

Great news, it’s great to see projects like this, which get the people involved. I’m curious to see what the price of admission is for this venture. Also, it’s great to see you push albariño; I’ve been enjoying it for a few months now, and I find it to be an incredibly versatile wine.
    Salud!

Gary, that is amazing, this will definitely change the wine world, absolutely revolutionary, can’t to be a part of it.

finally you told everyone GV… i thought this was going to be the surprise… Thank you for letting all of us in on it back when you where in Napa for the WITS… do you know how hard it was not to tell!!!

Anyway, this is a pretty cool deal… I hope to be able to participate when I have time and am not busy with my own wine! Harvest is crazy here already. Pinots coming in next week as well as Chardonnay.. The Sav Blanc is fermenting away! 2007 is gonna be a good year!

[...] Totally cool news from Gary Vaynerchuk on Wine Library TV today: he’s launching a “community wine” where many aspects of the wine’s end result will be determined by the folks involved. [...]

That is great news. That is a great idea. And I would like to get involved. I am going to go after that wine label hard. Count on great images for the label and promotions. Very exciting. Look forward to tasting the creation.

Awesome announcement – have to say I was betting on the food network, but maybe in the future ;)

Wish I could order some of the wine (Canadian) – imagine it will be great.

  250. August 30, 2007

    Shadowbird

I could have never imagined this! If I have to have it shipped out to me to taste, I want to be a part of it in some small way. This is definitely changing the wine world…and I like it.

  251. August 30, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

So, looking foreward to hearing specifically how we can participate. 1/2 case seems like a good deal to me.

Great surprise! I have read quite a bit about Crushpad and even thought about doing it myself. This will be a nice introduction without the significant cost. If it works out, who knows where this can go?

  256. August 30, 2007

    Vincenzo

Gary, AWESOME announcement. I’m excited. Count me in. Awesome job on the fake outs. I believed at least 3 of them. I was yelling at my computer, laughing, and calling you a jerk all at the same time. Cheers!

I am sooooo going to Napa next year!! This is very exciting…Congratulations Gary!

  258. August 30, 2007

    Trish-da'-Dish

I’d love to come, and then go to work to brag about “my” wine that I flew out to California to make! Even if I end up not being able to make it out there, I’ll be buying at least 4 bottles (1 to archive unopened, as the first-ever Vayniac wine ever made–Another to try out/drink on—2 for bragging rights, to bring to parties, so that people can try out MY wine :-)

  259. August 30, 2007

    davidB

Awesome, love the idea and once again you are putting forth some effort and doing sometghing for others, very nice. I’m in for bottles and if I can figure a way to get to SF and Napa I’im in fo that as well. An amazing opportunity to get involved in wine making, which I believe a lot of us have thought about doing at one time or another. Kind of goes back to that QOTD a whiel back doesn’t it???? For that I thank you.

  260. August 30, 2007

    SamIAm

Woo-hoo! I am now particularly happy to live in Northern Cal. What a novel concept, Gary, that fits in so well with your manifesto.

bad ass. i’m sold. sign me up. very cool thing you’re doing. i don’t know gary…you say only a little bit of you…..but you’ve done a heck of a lot to promote and change the wine world (wltv, conan, the community wine, the list goes on and on). you’re a great man.

Hey, GV, feel the excitement? I do! Everyone is impressed with this idea (or is just plain brain dead). Great idea. Can’t wait for additional information. Forget naked feet – lets just crush naked. Thanks for making my day.

Gary I am dying here… Way out in door county, WI in a cabin on vacation, sipping an 03 chateau sandpnnet…but I can’t get the episode on my iPhone over this very spotty edge connection. I have to stand on one exact spot to get amy signal at all!

since I cant watch I’m trying yo glean the announcement from the comments. So far I’ve got some kind of project with crushpad…of which I am familiar due to alan baker and that can only be very cool!

But then something else about ian doing some or all shows? love you G-man but also mad props to ian as I’ve found his notes spot on in the past

We head home tomorrow and I’ll be able to see the episode then. Wish this iPhone could pull it down! Alas connection is very spotty (we’re way out in the sticks here) and no flash on iPhone of course . So long for now!

  267. August 30, 2007

    PDXVino

Excellent. South Africa has tons of co-ops and it’s a wonderful experience being part of the wine harvesting, crushing, blending, etc community. Far more affordable way to own part of a mini-winery. Great idea, likely will catch on, hopefully in Oregon/Washington. Thanks Gary for the opportunity!

  268. August 30, 2007

GV, well done. I think this is fantastic! Maybe I can get out there from MI.

  271. August 30, 2007

    Rick W.

Great Idea!!! Good luck and I hope you make some good wine. I think you should of made your own wine Gary, to many egos involved can make for a long harvest. We trust your palate let us do your label and name the wine.

  272. August 30, 2007

    EvilHomer

WOW WOW WOW…Road trip baby…Vancouver to LA to make wine…Does it get any better than that!!! GARY IS DA MAN!!!

  273. August 30, 2007

    Mike S.

Its kinda funny, after seeing what the unveiling was, it was the only thing that makes sence! A wine show? Naaaa. A jets purchase? Naaaa (not big enough) A new host? oh, you know it ain’t that (no offense).

    This is the Boooooomb digidy!!!!!

A wine, OUR WINE, Absoulutely Brilliant!

It is the only answer that goes with your theme. It now seems so obvious. I am down with the new CAB.

I was actually came accross crush pad online 2 months ago and thought that that was the coolest thing in the world, but I didn’t have 10G to spend on my own brand, plus I don’t know !@#%$ about wine, but I’m trying Gary, i’m trying.

I look forward to being a small part of the process.

    Worth the build up……………

    Mike

I couldn’t be happier to see somebody replacing Gary on WLTV. It’s about effing time. I had to run an errand, so I only caught the first minute or so. Did I miss anything?

A Vanyiac cab sounds awesome. Cheers Gary!

Awesome! I can’t wait for the label design contest.

  281. August 30, 2007

    Bossman

Awesome! Better than any expectation (and that’s saying something with the build up). I’m in and I guess I now know how I will use the airline voucher from the canceled Bern’s trip. Hoping to raise a glass with you, I owe you a drinky-drink.

I suspect, though, that demand will exceed supply, so make sure the mechanism is robust and fair (is there a possibility that the run can be expanded if need be not to exclude anyone interested?). Nothing would be worse then someone wanting to participate but being shut out due to circumstance.

Speaking of which I’m feeling for those in the “forbidden” states. It sure would be in the Vaynernation spirit if Vayniacs in neighboring states volunteered to purchase for others to pick up. For their largess they could receive credit for the order towards the top 5. Something like this could be organized in an easily overlooked (by WL) topic in the forums. This stuff wouldn’t be available for the protected merchant to peddle anyway, it sure would be a shame if some of the brethren Vayniacs are shut out due to silly laws. We need to find a workaround.

Ian is stellar. There never needs to be a reason for a day to go by without a WL eps. It would afford you the opportunity to take a break now and then and show him your confidence in him, he has the Vaynerchuk sensibility without being derivative and is entertaining in his own right. I suspect there’s more than a few cat’s pee and poops in him (but don’t tell him I said that). You should be secure in your success/talent (you know you’re an original) to give him a shot now and then. All the great talkshow host had stand-ins, think about it. You don’t drink just one varietal, do you?

    You done good, Vaynerchuk.

  282. August 30, 2007

    Bill I

Comin’ out of “lurker status” for this one…

Congrats Gary! I love the idea of community-made wine, and I can’t wait to see what comes out of the label contest. Great news, great announcement; I’ll definitely be buying as much as the budget will allow.

  283. August 30, 2007

    Agnes

wow you scared me there for a minute (no offense Ian!!!)
then it felt like the finally of Dancing with the stars…… or that sort of thing ( prolonging the suspense..)
community wine sounds like interesting idea!! does community include Canada?

  284. August 30, 2007

    Grape Expectations

Fantastic idea. I’m fortunate to have family in the bay area so I hope I’ll be able to actually participate as well as buy. Can’t wait to see the details.

  285. August 30, 2007

    Dominus

I thought about this a year or so ago and now, it can come to fruition. I need to take some time off and what better way than to spend it in Napa.

    I’m there.

    Cheers!

  286. August 30, 2007

    nyc621

Exciting, but very unexpected. I think it’s a great idea and can’t wait to buy a bottle. Maybe we can do a nyc tasting?!

(Is anyone else sad that GV isn’t going on the food network? I’m thinking of starting a petition!)

  287. August 30, 2007

  289. August 30, 2007

    John Farrin

THIS will be interesting. The opportunity to follow a wine almost from it’s inception to it’s completion is an experience that only comes around once in a blue moon.

QOTD: you DIDN’T buy the Jets?

  290. August 30, 2007

    Michelle

Wow! What an awesome announcement! I’m sooo glad that I live reasonably close to Napa because I’d love to be part of this wine!! You are the best – always looking out for your fans. I got to admit (no offense to Ian) you did give me a little scare. The wine world wouldn’t quite be the same without yas.
    Congrats on the big day!

  291. August 30, 2007

    Wave

The event lived up to the hype. Nice work GV. You just changed the wine world for good. The momentum created by you and the Vaynernation is steamrolling down a steep S.F. street. WOW!!!!!!!!!!

    Dr. J. L. Sifuentes

Hook me up with 10 cases please! Gary, you need some serious HELP! Thanks for the ride and I’ll see you along the way as OUR wine comes to fruition. Dr. Sifuentes.

Awesome GV. I WILL BE THERE! Can I say, in unison with all the Vayniacs, THANK YOU!

Great idea, should be a wild ride….hopefully the vintage will be a good one, but even if the wine sucks, we’ll have memories….i’m curious to hear what the price point will be….

  297. August 30, 2007

    Ookla

This rocks – I actually haven’t even finished watching the episode yet – I’m actually half watching, half typing. I don’t want to miss anything – thank you, fantastic, way to go!!!

Very cool!! Look forward to following this adventure.

  299. August 30, 2007

    Stumpy

Is that it? All that drawn out hyper-bull for so long, just for that!! Talk about overkill.
Don’t get me wrong, it sounds like an interesting project and I wish you luck but come on, it was over hyped. I just hope it doesn’t end up being another one of those typically jamy Napa fruit bombs with an overbearing oak monster, that seems to be the popular trend.
Good luck and don’t forget to include some poo, and veggy notes.

  300. August 30, 2007

    Bossman

QOTD: What the heck is TOT SER?

Oh, I almost forgot, I’m definitely in in subsequent years if you do an aussie shiraz, it would be justification to make the trek (amd I’m just looking for an excuse).

  301. August 30, 2007

    Thomas St. James

This is so frickin full of crap. You guys make most of this stuff up. I mean, who talks like this: “Vaynernation”, etc. It seems to me, that this is all about this guy’s employees writing comments….so transparent that it isn’t even funny.

  302. August 30, 2007

    addamms3

That’s a really exciting project. Good thinking. Any idea of the price point or is that the kind of thing that is calculated later? I can see getting in on the project just as an excuse to get out to California, especially if it is to supervise my people as they put together my signature wine.

  303. August 30, 2007

    sgt vino

I hope you allow us viewers in Hawaii to purchase! Great idea, great show. I may be changing my vacation plans to go to Napa now to coincide with some of the 2008 dates. I’ll just have to find a way to prolong my wife’s pregnancy now….hmmm….

  304. August 30, 2007

Great now I have two wines I have to wait for I just put a homebrew wine in my carboy to ferment last weekend and now I have to wait on another wine to come to age. Really Gary this is great news nothing that I was expecting good work on getting something like this together for everyone to get involved with.

  306. August 30, 2007

    HEY GV
    Fun episode, didn’t expect this….

    Keep up the good work.

    Winelover4ever

I have to admit that you scare the shh….tt out of me. For a moment I thought we were gonna loose the little bit of you part….. Disclaimer….. people with heart problems must skip the first minute and a half. Hey vayniacs !!!!!…..I would rather call you MANYACS……In addition to the the good humor…. this is a great brilliant idea. Involving you fans in the real stuff is like saying I’m seriuos about the wine world changing part. Now, analyzing the annoucement future succes, I have to say the odds are on your favor. You’re getting the cream of the crop, Oakville, Howell mountain, Cohn and Mt Veeder vineyards, get out of here, this Cab with a little bit of everybody will be something good to talk about, ahhh don’t forget…… whether “THEY” like it or not……..count me on crazy Gary little dude…

  310. August 30, 2007

    Boris Jazbec

Gary, What a awesome idea. Though I live in Canada I will find a way to buy a few bottles of Vayner 2007 Cab Sauv.

I look forward to partaking in some way in the making of this wine.

  311. August 30, 2007

    linda

awesome announcement — and I totally agree about the anticipation being better than the actual event itself. I feel the same way whenever I’m planning a trip (especially to Paris) — the pre-stuff, the talking about it, (not to mention the necessary shopping for new clothes), and all the leg work involved is just about as much fun as the trip itself.

I’m definately in … all the best with the harvest. wish I could be there to crush.

    Linda

and will be buying a bottle or two.

very exciting chuk! thanks for all your dedication!

  316. August 30, 2007

    flavasauce

Damnit, I was hoping we were all going to get a case of Petrus!!!! I almost went white in the beginning with the Ian gag, (no offense to Ian.) Honestly this is very cool but I’d be more excited if I hadn’t worked my first crush last year in Napa and, being the main celler rat, it was kind of hell on earth. I mean my back is still kinda #$%@ed up. But for most Vaniacs this is a great opportunity to get their hands dirty and a great idea. I’ll definately buy some and come to the parties or maybe even do a little work. Just don’t ask me to do a pump over, or shovel out the must from a tank, or ……..Blending sounds good!

  317. August 30, 2007

    geespot

It’s been a couple months since I’ve posted/commented etc…but YEAH! GO TEAM! How could I not tune in to see the big 0? The Cab is a great idea and I will definitely be in on this action.

Way to go Gary V and Ian D! Can hardly wait to get the details.
    Albarino is a vino maravilloso!!

  319. August 30, 2007

    Vinovintner

Great announcement. I met Michael Brill,Stu, and the entire Crushpad crew when they came to New York in April for an open house. The Vaniacs are in good hands. You will be amazed at the quality of the wine that will be produced. It won’t be cheap, but will be worthy of the price tag because Crushpad works with you every step of the way to assure that you are satisfied with the end product. Michael is a great entrepreneur and person in general. Vaniacs, this is world class cult wine, not your typical run of the mill mass produced wine.

The most exciting thing about this project is that those who have never experienced winemaking first hand will fully understand the blood, sweat, and diligence involved with winemaking. It is hard, and laborious work. The thrill is when you open the bottle of wine which is in fact a fruit of your labor. There is no better feeling on planet earth. It is extremely rewarding and exhilerating. Think about it. You have nurtured this wonderful product. You brought from infancy through childhood, and adolescence. When the wine comes to maturity, you can proudly look back and say I remember all of the work that went into making this wine and it was worth it.

One thing that you will understand from this project is that winemakers are very cordial and proud of their work. You will experience tremendous commoradity as well. Winemaking is a combination of a little basic science and a whole lot of art as you master blending techniques that produce exceptional wines. Good luck Vaniacs.

Very cool idea but do the math. 6000 bottles and 20000 Vayniacs? Ouch, dude.

AWESOME idea!!!!! Only one problem… I’m stuck in Australia!!!!!!!! Oh well I’ll just have to order a few bottles and hope the Vayner nation decides to try this somehwere in Oz. Enjoy it you lucky buggers in the States. You’d better do a good job!!!! :P

By the way Gary I almost forgot….. the idea about the food network…. you’re getting warmer…. remember always this……. release what you really want or wish for, and you shall recieve it any time soon…”The Masters of the Secret” say.

Yes! Great idea and concept. Can’t wait to be apart of it. The only thing I was disapointed about is that I wish I knew about this six months ago so we could schedule a trip to CA to help out. Maybe next time. hope I can get at least 6 of the Vayniac Cab.

Awesome! I’ve been wanting to do a crushpad wine for a while and this is a perfect way to get my feet wet, so to speak. And since I live in the Bay Area travel won’t be a problem. :D

    Whoa!
I was wrong on both guesses…
    very cool Gary.
Although Cab Sau isn’t my favorite grape I’ll havta get a few bottles.

    About that Albarino… that should be the world’s SECOND most drunk white wine;
Chenin blanc is number one in my book (mouth; that should be).
Still, I’ll need a nice taste o’ that ‘Black Pig’.

  328. August 30, 2007

    Msquared

Did you actually say “ship out barrel samples?”. Because I’ll be able to join if that’s the case. On my schoolteacher schedule/salary, I doubt I can make it to Napa, but I’ll but a few bottles and participate in every other way I can! This is, indeed, changing the wine world! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I saw a comment from someone on overkill or something. I have to disagree. All those days of waiting could have been rewarded with some cheesy marketing-style sell out, something like a wristband factory in china or some super-special shipping discount offer from WineLibrary. This smells more like the passion an integrity of someone really into wine. Kudos and good luck.

  332. August 30, 2007

    ChrisR

Really fun! I was waiting for you to do this. And it was one of my guesses!!

I was smiling through the whole open. I loved all the fake outs. In fact I almost wish there were more. More build up. More hype. You are PT BARNUM and Arnold S. wrapped into one. Master of promotion. Great job.

I love the announcement, and I’m looking forward to participating! Not sure what people in MA should be excited about except the Patriots pouncing on the J-E-T-S. By the way, aren’t you warming the wine up when you’re holding the stem of that tasting glass? Go Ian!

I rather not comment tonight. I expected something more important, after nine months of watching daily that number on the board. I guess it’s going to be fun, but so much expectation just for this? am I missing something here?

  360. August 31, 2007

    vivaitalia

Wow Gary! That is freaking incredible! How could anyone be disappointed? This announcement far exceeded anything I came up with. The only thing that’s a downer for me is the fact that I live in Florida and am on a students budget but i’ll have to find a way to at least get to the release party. The barrel samples by mail is a brilliant idea too. I think it’s awesome that you’re doing everything you can to get all of us involved. Oh, and how about the label contest for the iphone? I think that would be perfect. Thanks so much for all you do for us.

Oh, and i’m kinda upset that you’re letting the albarino secret out of the bag. It has long been my favorite white wine and it’s so little known that the prices have stayed reasonable. Hopefully it doesn’t end up booming like pinot noir and so many others. Also I think it would be awesome if you could come up with a few things for those of us who have almost no means of making it out there. The progress tracking web site is a great touch. Man i’m pumped up, I can’t believe there are disappointed people.

GV ~ what can I say, as a Washington winemaker, I’m actually totally psyched about what you’ve put forth with the “First” community wine ever !!
It’s such a thrill to see the fruits of your labor after tending the vines, carefully watching the fermentation and then pressing out the wines, barrel aging and finally blending and bottling. I still get excited to walk through the vineyards in the fall and connect with the nature that provides such a fantastic product. It’s funny, my wife is born and raised in California and I convinced her that I’m a “Washington Winemaker” and she moved here to start a life with me makng wine and pursuing a dream. Now it looks like it’s come full circle and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of the “Greater Community” and produce a wine in Napa that all of us have a part in and can enjoy equally, because that’s what you’ve been talking about the entire time you’ve been doing WLT. I’m so totally in for at least a case or two, I figure, business write-off right ??

Fantastic move my man, Congrats ~ Max

  386. August 31, 2007

A Massive Middle Finger of Congratulatory Congrats Gary! This is huge news, extremely exciting, and it only furthers my belief in your cause. The wine industry, and I, owe you a personal thanks. Had you gone to the food network, though admirable to some, hell, maybe even admirable to most, you would have lost me as WLTV viewer and fellow Vino Revolutionary. Having heard the announcement I have to admit I do have some renewed faith in GV, not that it was lacking in the first place but damn I am really pumped now. You’re taking wine to where it belongs, whether that is to the pedestal as you call it or to the people as I call it. Thanks GV.

Awesome idea, Gary! For the Vaynernation, this is a big plus. For me, this sucks. Why? Because I live in Tennessee, the state that doesn’t allow direct wine shipping. So, unless I can get a bottle from somewhere else and drive it over state lines, I will not be able to get a bottle of the finished product. It is times like these when I wish I lived somewhere else.

GARY, you were so bumb founded that you forgot the QOTD!
anyhow, that is great. cudos. the black pig could have been the surprise in itself. despite controversy, i like the name a lot, a lot.
will stay tuned. we are seeing futures at the next level.

  391. August 31, 2007

    BobM

Okay, Gary. I’m a three-week lurker, now out of the closet, thanks to your big announcement. To answer your not-quite-explicitly asked question, I think the announcement is far more exciting than the buildup to it. Of course, since I live in the Bay Area, it has a pretty immediate impact, and
    I’m looking forward to participating.

In 1982, I made a Cabernet with grapes from Stag’s Leap, which thanks to a big helping of beginner’s luck turned out pretty good. It’ll be a lot of fun to meet the other Vayniacs and learn how to do it right.

You really got me worried there for a minute!!! Not that I dont like that Ian guy, he seemed dorky enough to last episode or two, but I just think no one could ever replace you. You my friend have a great wine tasting skills! There is no doubt about that! But over all, it is your persona and charisma that makes us all loging back onto your winelibray tv.

    Great stuff…

Could the Black Pig refer to the Pata Negra, Black Foot or Iberican Pig, that lives only in Spain and gives us the best dry cured hams in the world ?

Again I feel that I live in the wrong part of the world. I love this kinda things, Vayniac Cab. But living in Sweden makes it hard for me to contribute the way I want. But its a great initiative and I hope I´m able to come to SF next year.

I was anxious my entire work day for this damn thing. Frankly, it’s really the best answer anyone could hope for. I used to make wine with my grandfather and the chance to do that again now that he has passed is amazing. Your desire to breakdown wine barriers extends -and is fueled by- this idea, and that’s inspiring as hell. Show me an attractive price point and I’m in. Might be the youngest person there though.

  406. August 31, 2007

Genius. I can’t wait to be part of this.

I was inexplicably anxious all day (just like Matt H.). When the video was posted I only got halfway through before I had to leave for a prior engagement(my birthday dinner) – I continued to have an uneasy feeling unil I watched the remainer of the episode (to ensure GaryV was not leaving us…yet).

Gary…you’ve turned me into a junkie.

Very exciting news! I was interested in particiating in a Harlan Estates project that sounded like this one, only way out of my league financially.
You don’t need to worry about the anticipation being the best part of the game, as some games, including the wine game, never end. Every year it’s a new and different story with new sets of anticipations. I will be following this with interest, especially as I am not so far from San Francisco.

  416. August 31, 2007

That is definately very sweet. I would be interested in this. Unfortunately I live in Ireland and have no way to get to SF in the next few weeks or months. Like the Scandinavian fellows above me, maybe we can hope for something in Spain or Italy. Anyway, it sounds cool and I’m sure everyone who participates will have a great time.

Amazing! Worth the wait and such a great opportunity for the Vayner Nation. This really is what wine is all about…bringing people together, and now it’s bringing people from all over the country together. Thanks Gary. I want to buy a case, but I live in PA. Any way around that?

Gary – Wow, what a great idea. What better way to further educate the Vayniac nation in winemaking than including them in the entire process!

Looking forward to seeing more details. Count me in.

Great marketing, innovative concept, and overwhelmingly positive responses! I hope I can afford a bottle or 2! Although I won’t be with my fellow Vayniacs to participate in the process on a physical level (teacher salary & schedule), I will certainly be with you in spirit!! Thanks Gary (& WL team!) and good luck with the project!

  438. August 31, 2007

Congratulations Gary!!! You are a so better and you so deserve to change the wine world! BUT!!! Stop drinking coke and lime it will kill you! Cancer loves all that sugar.
Drink wine!!!! Oh ok there is sugar but wine makes it better!
So do you think this will be a sideways take offfffffff?

And you`ll be rolling in grapes, drowning in wine, parting like it`s what did you say 2009…

You will have many that will or should I say to participate in this and just can`t afford it! What about shipping grapes to the East coast or to the other side of the world and we can whip up some beautiful wine!! Remember I said it first!
Is there an aerial view of the vineyard!

OK Tony! HOW many people are serious about participating?

ONE DAY YOU WILL OWN THE JETS!
AND move out of the way Donald Trump!

  439. August 31, 2007

    Mark1348

    Great idea. I’m in.

What about shipping some of the grapes used in the wine? It would be great to taste the fruit what went into the wine. You can ship grapes anywhere…

Very exciting! I want to find out more about it and see how and where I can put in my two cents. ;-)

    Gary, you ROCK! :-)

  441. August 31, 2007

What a great idea! I’m definitely in, and looking forward to future community wines from around the world. What I would really love to see is the effect of three types of oak on single vineyard, single vintage Sangiovese, or any grape for that matter. Maybe a three bottle release, one American, one French, and one Slavonian.

On the Albarino, it’s hard to accept that some of these hardcore oak and butter chardonnay drinkers would switch. Either way, diversity is the key.

    Great job on the news!

  442. August 31, 2007

    Fiorentina!

Gary…long time…no post…I guess I’ve transformed into one of those hated Lurkers, but I guess that happens with 70 hour a week. Anyways….this idea of yours is amazing. I’m definitely going to be involved in this, but was wondering…what is the bottle price? Also, what type of oak barrels are you planning on using? Are you planning on this wine being “organic” and/or vegan friendly? Will this wine be filtered or unfiltered? In addition to these wine questions, how long are you planning on each member of the community participating in the harvest? Is it 1 day, a week, or up to us to decide? Being that the Vaniac community is so large (and mainly from the East coast), is it up to each person to find their own place to stay or will there be certain accomidations provided? Will you be working with certain hotels/bed & breakfasts exclusively for this event?
Sorry for all the questions, but this is something I cannot miss and need time to plan for.
Congrats on your success Gary…you and the rest of the staff at Wine Library work hard and deserve it.

I am thrilled. I have a home in Carneros and am back and forth from LA all the time. Looking forward to the dates. Hopefully you will schedule the crush on a weekend….although I know it’s all about the grapes!

Gary, This is great news! In fact it kind of THUNDERED!

Like the MCA suggestion of artists’ labels. But surely there are artists within the Vayner Nation who could do the job. Sounds to me like another great contest, c/w Vayniac cheering/voting sections. Well, maybe GV’s favourite artist for the inaugural. Would that be Leroy Nieman, if the man is still with us?

  446. August 31, 2007

    Juxtaviews - » Weekly Roundup - 08/31/07

[...] Wine Library TV Goes Social – Gary really understands embracing the internet. First, for those who don’t know he’s for wine what Jim Cramer is for stocks. He’s passionate, he’s enthusiastic, he’s not a wine snob, he’s real, and he can communicate to the noob wine drinker as well as the true wine experts out there. Not only did he purchase social wine site corkd.com(one of the best looking sites on the web) to expand his winelibrary empire (representing NJ mind you), Gary recently appeared on Conan, was covered in Time magazine, and just yesterday unveiled his new idea — a community supported Wine. Huh? Well, you can work the crush, go through the barrel sampling, and buy the wine and work into the blending phase, design the label contest, and eventually get down and party. From one bottle to 100 cases…it can be your wine. Interesting idea Gary…very interesting. [...]

I’m in! A surprising, refreshing announcement, far from a disappointment. The food network thing would have been one though. I only watch TV on the internet now!

  502. August 31, 2007

    hermitaged

So the announcement was killer – very exciting stuff. It’s kind of funny about the Food Network stuff because I always talk about how I can’t believe they don’t have any show dedicated to wine. They even have that Thirsty Traveler guy working on Iron Chef America, but still no dedicated wine show.

So how is this going to work now that you are getting into the wine making side of things – even without “scoring” the wines, it seems like it could still be seen as a conflict of interest.

One more thing – I agree on Albarino, but I sometimes wonder about Arinto out of Portugal. Kind of versatile like Albarino, although they are markedly different, but the wine seem able to fit into several situations.

    Happy Wine Guy

Gary sells out. What a jerk-off. I wonder who will get the 500 cases? Those who are in S.F. and those that pay the most. What about the rest of the nation? Piss on them. Gary wants to play big-shot wine maker and go against all that he has been saying all along. Average guy — screw you! I make wine and you don’t. Whoever pays the most gets to blend it. I say kiss my ass Gary. I don’t want any wine made by some rich kiss up. In the mean time I will keep my inclusive attitude towards wine, help those who show interest and avoid the elitists…including new ones like Gary. What a disappointment. Make sure to charge your Mom for her one bottle, jerk.

However, I am a little bit unsure as to how this should
work out well. Many people with many opinions could possibly
    spoil the result.

Still I hope it will be a success and send you my best
    wishes for your project.

    Hi Gary,

I am still following your vlog day by day and I am thrilled by your idea. You put so much energy and as we say in Germany “heart blood” into your idea to create a real wine community.

One question, you mentined, that in the future you might end up doing such a kind of project in different areas of the world, but how can we participate now in this project? is there any chance of a least buying some botles at the end of the story here in Europe, are you going to export some cases?

    would be great to know.

    regards
    Thorsten

Well Gary, this is just so amazing. I feel part of a community, and not just a comunity in the Internet kind of way but a real community. Hello everybody. Let us create a great wine together. And you local people who have the opportunity to go there for the harvesting, dont go eating up all the grapes now!

    So excited

Just last night I was bemoaning the fact that you have to be a gadzillionnaire to own a winery and then hallelujah Gary comes along to lead his people home. Are you sure you aren’t Canadian? Goddess bless you, and how can I sign up?

I have been lurking for a couple of weeks now, Trying to catch up on the past episodes that iTunes has downloaded, wanting to have a reason to write (never know what to say), Anyway, I am here in Northern California, cannot wait to get involoved in this, Will try and make it at least one if not all events. Will help in anyway that I can. Going to go and pre-order right now if there is anything left. Being a part of changing something as monumental as the wine world is amazing, thanks to Gary for including all of us in that!
