All your fart and poop talk reminded me of the Jets, and whether you’ll be extending FS to the teams (if there’s more than one) that beat up on them this season. Or is that no longer sound business now that you’re at “Dancing With The Stars” viewership levels?

QOTD – the ‘99 L’ecole Syrah is what opened my eyes to WA. Still one of my favorites.

    Love from New England…

QOTD – 1994 Woodward Canyon Dedication Series Cabernet Sauvignon

However…There are three wineries on the up and coming that I feel will eventually deliver an even better experience. Just have to wait 10 more years to see if they develop in the bottle the same way as the WWC.

RULO – Kick Ass Syrah at a mindblowingly reasonable price.

STEVENS – Cabernet blends are the way to go (424 and XY)

BOUDREAUX – Completely off the grid winery up in the mountains. His Cabernet Sauvignon will rival Quilceda Creek, Leonetti and all other chalengers in the not too distant future.

267 – until barrel tasting party OR blending party for the top 5?

Great ep. GV – been looking for some Washington Cab Sauv and Syrah to try and think I just found a few thanks to you!

QOTD: I have been looking for something just like the 2004 Delille Doyenne Syrah.

Man, I have to go to the bathroom after watching this show. QOTD: 00′ L’ecole Cab from WWV. I wasn’t expecting much, then, my wife and I tasted it and WOW did it change my mind on washington state. Glad the L’ecole was featured today.

Never had a Washington wine that I can recall. I just “migrated” to an Oregon wine (the Benton Hill Pinot Gris which I like) so Washington state should be next.

Gotta love any show that gives you a fart in a glass and the host goes back for a second whiff. QOTD: not any Washington wines come to mind. I guess I’m waiting for about 6 weeks till I fly out there with my girlfriend to tour. Besides the wines tasted, any suggestions for stops??

QOTD: I had a 1987 Cold Creek (Chat. Ste Michelle?) Cabernet Sauvignon

    memorable.

Hmmm: lets see, Greatest Wa State Wine ?
Well the 2003 or 2004 Waterbrook cab for $17 cant be beat.

But If ya wanna spend some bones a $40 J Bookwalter Cab is pretty much the cream of the crop $

    AND NO POOP !!!!!
Unless you wanna add some of your own (lol)

    Poopalicious!

Funny, a reviewer on CellarTracker (which I hope to not be using after Corkd is done with its upgrade) described the syrah’s bouquet as a, “Wonderful nose of red flowers and macerated raspberries” What?!? No poop? Ah, the joy and mystery of wine.

QOTD: Many very good ones–but no one that stands out as my fav.

  27. September 4, 2007

    Chad

QOTD: Washington wines all over the place with Chat. Ste Michelle. Their reisling is my house white refresher and they have some excellent red wines in the mix. I’ve also had a few pinot noirs from Wash., but names fail me.

  28. September 4, 2007

    Fun ep.
At a recent Vayniac tasting in Seattle we shared some Washington thunder: a Sorenson 2003 Cab Franc, 100% I believe; a 2004 Silver Lake Cab/Merlot blend out of Rattlesnake Hills; a 2003 Betz, their Clos de Betz blend, from Columbia Valley; and a 2003 Reininger Syrah out of Walla Walla. All serious wines, all interesting approaches. Washington is producing distinctive, unique flavor profiles harder and harder to find in Cali. Good juice.

  31. September 4, 2007

    Autoproxy

QOTD – First one that comes to mind is Eroica. It’s obviously awesome, and a crowd pleaser.

  32. September 4, 2007

    Chad

QOTD (now that I’ve listened to the question): No favorites stand out. I know I’ve had at least a handful of great Washington wines, but I can also remember a few dogs, too. Will have to get a couple for the weekend.

Thank you for differentiating between “terroir” and “vegetal, earth flavors.” Great episode today.

QOTD: Terra Blanca 2002 Reserve Syrah. Concentrated? Oh yeah! Blueberries all day long. Steve-O, you know what I’m talking about.

TKS GV for putting yourself out to tape some shows for us this week, You da’ Man!

QOTD: I’ve had a couple Cayuse and will be getting more sent to me in a month I believe… I’m a sucker for those big Syrahs…. But poopy diapers?? not too sure ;-)

Gary — Pepper Bridge 2001 Cab. Got it from Woot for $30/bottle, $5 shipping for the lot. If I knew how much I liked it, I would have gotten more.

  37. September 4, 2007

QOTD: I’ve had many really good Washington wines, the most recent stand-out was the 2003 Chateau Faire le Pont Syrah. I’m also a big fan of the Vin du Lac wines.

    Orion Slayer

Great show, you don’t fail to deliver the fun. I don’t know who else could sniff a dirty diaper with a smile on his face! ;)

Good luck to your Jets, but the Patriots are going to be unstoppable this year on their trek to their third Super Bowl victory. I hope Randy Moss is able to play.

QOTD: I’ve only had one Washington state wine, Columbia Crest, and wasn’t to thrilled. What I’m I waiting for? Nothing, really. There is so much wine to try and I’m only coming up on the end of my first year into wine. But it’s a great thing because I have SO much to look forward to!

When I see Robert Parker or Jancis Robinson describe a wine as smelling like a fart, then I’ll KNOW you’re (I mean we’re) changing the wine world.

QOD – As a WA resident, I’ve had a lot of good ones, though lately I’ve been too hit with sticker shock to pony up the dough. Most memorable to date has been a Leonetti Merlot that I would have pegged as Italian in a blind tasting. Great juice.

Thx for the tips on backwater wineries MagmumGourmet. Widgeon Hill is another WA winery that is totally under the radar (probably because it’s tiny) but is making terrific reds.

  40. September 4, 2007

QOTD. I have some Dunham cellars 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon that is about the best Washington wine I’ve tasted.

  43. September 4, 2007

Good show! QOTD: Chat. Ste Michelle Merlot and Waterbrook cab. are the only one’s I remember being decent.

  44. September 4, 2007

    Karl Laczko

I liked the description of the Cab-Franc, even though you did try to play it down, and the Cab-Sauv sounded delicious but the Merlot did nothing for me.
The Syrah came across as the best of the bunch by far, some of those smell descriptions, Oh Boy!

QOTD – Only had one, Ste. Michelle Cab-Sauv (a present). Not bad, looking for more examples of the State. Washington Wines sound great, but not so easy to get over here, but I’ll keep looking.

Another good epsode…a good weekend of episodes, including Vayniak Nation Communal wine, etc.

Please explain, e.g., Robert Parker/Stephen Tanzer/etc. reviews a 200x Bordeaux which costs $20-30, says good things about it and rates it an 87 or 88, and you review the Chatter Creek Cab Franc for the close to the same price, give it an 89, and tell us to pass on it. I always thought an 89 was a fairly good score. Is there any correlation among 89-rated wines that are Bordeaux, Cabs, Temperanillos, Chardonnays, etc., which cost $15, $20, $35, etc? How can we interpret similar scores across wine varietals and price? points?

  47. September 4, 2007

QOTD: It’s a tough one. Lots of good wine in Washington, but if I were forced to choose, I’d pick Cayuse (2003 and 2004) Syrah. One of the only Walla Walla Valley AVA wines to make it out of the freeze.

  48. September 4, 2007

    Rani H

    Great show!!

QOTD: I have yet to really get into the Washington state wines yet. Been planning on it and I believe after this show I probably should go out and give them a whirl.

QOTD – 2004 Cadence Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, just an amazing wine, with so much going for it, especially aromatically….Gary, if you haven’t had it, ya gotta try it!

QOTD Reininger 2002 Syrah. Good stuff at Reininger. -K

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the state that’s named after my hometown — WASHINGTON, NEW JERSEY, BABY!!!!

So Delille PeoplePoop scores a 91, eh? Think I’m gonna pass on that one.

QOTD: That’s the great thing about this show – I’ve never really thought about Washington State wines, but now I’m interested in the Pepper Bridge. I’ve gotta try a wine that’s “so delicious, it seems artificial!”

    Man, I LOVE Washington wines!

QOTD: Anything from L’ecole 41! I don’t think they’ve made a bad wine to date that I’ve tried!

  53. September 4, 2007

    east3rd

Rats! When I saw that today’s show was on Washington, I was hoping to see a Sineann Cab on the list. I’ll have to seek out the L’ecole, though.

    Aktormedic,

We just had that 2004 Cadence CdC at a blind tasting of Washington wines. It was the runaway winner. Washington Meritages are something of a style unto themselves, but they rock.

  55. September 4, 2007

    wlburk

    Good episode.

QOTD: Not yet familiarized with Washington State wines.

  56. September 4, 2007

QOTD: “I don’t want to walk back from Moscow to Pullman!” (a little football trivia Gary, when Washington State and University of Idaho used to play years ago, the losers would sometimes have to walk home (at least that was the running joke)).
Figured that’d be a good whine.

Can’t wait to try some Washington wines,, may skip around the poop for a bit though.

  57. September 4, 2007

    Snarf

QOTD: love WA State wines, availability is sometimes an issue.

GV, you made a comment something to the affect that “you have to know what you like”. THAT is the best wine advice you or anyone can impart upon people. Finding out what you like is the journey…

  58. September 4, 2007

    Louisiana George

QOTD – 2001 Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot – $10 per bottle, drinking fantastically right now, like a well aged $30 bottle

Sitting on some 2002 Col. Crest Walter Clore that may trump the Merlot – I hope so!!!

  59. September 4, 2007

Goose Ridge syrah and Vireo meritage blend. Not bad, not bad at all.

  61. September 4, 2007

    randyb

Nice show Gary. Washington state does produce some winners.

QOTD: CSM Dr. Loosen Riesling 2006 is probably my favorite wine out of Washington that I have had recently. I have also had a couple of outstanding syrahs over the past few years, one was a Cayuse and the other was this limited distribution Duck Pond syrah which was a real surprise given the average quality of their everyday stuff.

  62. September 4, 2007

    Eric S.

QOD: Haven’t had too many Washington wines, but I remember a 1999 Andrew Will Merlot that I really enjoyed. I remember that it had some barnyard POOP on the nose as well!

  63. September 4, 2007

    Talley

Gary, thanks for doing a Washington wine episode! I’m in Seattle, so it’s great to see some wines that I can find at my local wine shop.

Regarding the burnt match smell on the Pepper Bridge: I think I heard recently that sulfur dioxide (which is what gives burnt matches their smell) is used when bottling wine to aid in the aging process. I know very little about how that works, or why it’s used . . . but is it possible (or likely) that the burnt match smell on the nose of the Pepper Bridge is a result of SO2 addition by the winery at bottling? Would that then be considered a flaw or an “overuse” of SO2?

QOTD: The L’Ecole 41 Syrah 2004 really pleased me. I look forward to trying their cab now as well.

  64. September 4, 2007

    Greg B.

Big G, Nice one. A friend just moved up to the Seattle area so I’m looking forward to visit him and do some tasting up there.

QOTD: I have not tasted a lot of Washington Wines, but I just picked up a 2000 Leonetti Merlot and I’m getting the feeling that she’ll be bringing the Thunder.

  65. September 4, 2007

    Kopi Luwak

A long time lurker (LTL)in Oregon. To be honest, GV, it your unabashed fart analogy that finally brought me out of lurkdom. QotD: Beaudreaux Cab Sav. I decanted it for three days (THREE DAYS!)before it really opened up- but when it did, holy man, what a wine.

  66. September 4, 2007

    Norcal

QOTD: actually, it was a Doyenne Syrah! The poop totally blows off (I noticed it too at first).

Gary, great ep. Thanks for doing a show on WA state wines. I have always enjoyed them as they seem to have a flavor profile all their own.

  71. September 4, 2007

    Jeff O

Great episode. I have to try some of the better made Cabs and Merlots, I’ve been a little turned off by the not so well made versions but I think it’s time to give them a try again. I especialy want to try some traditional Cab Franc’s, they sound really interesting.

QOTD: Never had one, waiting for my wallet to fill up a little more…

  72. September 4, 2007

    ScoTT from Salt Lake

QOTD: One year ago I shared a bottle of Delille’s Chaleuer Estate 1994 and it rawked my sawks! I also tried a several Barrel Samples from Basel Cellars 2005 vintage and I can not wait until they are released; amazing!

  73. September 4, 2007

    Ahhhh the first fart reference!!!
QOTD – Gotta be Columbia Crest…..;)

    Gary,

Good show I don’t have much experience with Washington state wines, I need to broaden my vistas in that regard.

QOTD: I have had Chat. Ste Michelle Merlot which I liked.

    Have a good trip!

  76. September 4, 2007

    Tommy Vernieri

I haven’t tried enough Washington wines. Best I can recall (meaning, entered into CellarTracker) is the Chateau Ste. Michelle 2006 Riesling.

  77. September 4, 2007

    Samantha H.

So excited you did a show on Washington wines – I live in Washington and can find these guys on the shelf. Now if I could only afford them!

QOTD: Chateau Ste Michelle 2001 Johannesburg Riesling – it was the first wine I really liked and got me started on trying other wines!

  78. September 4, 2007

    Mike

GREAT episode … I have been waiting for a WA wine show. I am not sure why … but I kinda’ want to try the Delille just to see if I smell the baby poop or fart! ;)

QOTD: Tough question … I started with WA wines so I have had many favorites. L’Ecole is definitely up there … several years ago Canoe Ridge had an awesome red table wine for around $14 … it is hard to go wrong with the Chateau Ste. Michelle wines. But … how about this boutique wine??? Blackwood Canyon Vineyards out of Benton City WA. Why is this my favorite? Because I happened to walk in for a tasting on a day when the owner was walking around doing barrel tastings. He decided that – instead of a run-of-the-mill tasting – I should just walk around with him and barrel taste!!! Great wine and a lot of fun … we even sampled fresh Blue Cheese while sampling the wines!

  79. September 4, 2007

    JonE

Are giving props to Washington out of a little climate fear?? Tell the truth man, no doubt Washington makes stellar stuff but are just peeking real far into the future? Only out of love and respect G-Man, this true nerd debating here.

QOTD: Loved the last Reininger Syrah I had. But I’m really waiting on my 02′ L’Ecole Walla Walla Cab, I think that’ll fantastic.

  80. September 4, 2007

    sam

gary, what do yu do with hose open wine bottles afte your done? nd could you do an episode on fruit wines, or mead? i tink hat may appeal to pl like e wo make wine at home.

  81. September 4, 2007

    mas

I’ve always liked the L’ecole No. 41 Cabs – both Walla Walla and Columbia Valley. I might look for that Pepper Bridge as well – you’ve got me intrigued. When you find such obvious Brett notes in a wine like the Delille, however, I worry about long-term stability – will that wine just be a total Brett bomb in 4 or 5 yrs??

Good show – thanks Gary …

QOTD: tied between a 2001 Leonetti Sangiovese Walla Walla, and a 1999 Cadence Ciel du Cheval.

  82. September 4, 2007

    RieslingRon

Gary, I agree Washington wines ROCK. Earlier I enjoyed an 02 Chat. St. Michelle Merlot with steak……..great.

    QOTD: Eroica Riesling

  83. September 4, 2007

    Piper

QOTD: I have to cheat a little, but it’s Blacksmiths ‘04 Lemberger (it’s a Maine winery but they’re using Washington grapes.) A little dry, great fruit, mmm mmm good.

  84. September 4, 2007

    Kevin

Gary, if you get a moment while chillaxin’, check this post out. You’ve inspired a fantastic dish, and for that, I am indebted. http://kevinkossowan.blogspot.com/2007/09/saut-of-game-veal-with-cassis-and.html

QOTD: I’ve had one Washington Pinot Noir of relatively respectable pedigree that in a blind tasting was called out as the new world ‘wtf’. I dubbed it ‘Guns N Roses’- as it smelled and tasted of gunpowder and fake flowers. And shoes melted on a fire pit.

  85. September 4, 2007

    Frank B

Great show Gary. Love Wash. State wines. Favorite so far has been Cayuse 02 syrah. Also liked K , Rennniger, Dunham, Leonetti, Rulo and many others.

  86. September 4, 2007

QOD-Columbia Crest Walter Clore Private Reserve Meritage 1999-still drinking great great. Always love Leonetti Cellars wines

  87. September 4, 2007

    Mike D

    Gary,

I wish you wouldn’t tell people about our Washington wines!?!
Now the price WILL go up!?!?

Favor WW so far: Buty “Beast” ‘04 Cab Sauv, Horse Heaven Hills. You can’t find ‘em in stores; you have to get ‘em online or go to their “trailer”. Yeah, their tasting room is in a trailer. When I spoke to Caleb that day (nice guy, btw), he told me they pump all their money into the wine – and I believe him!
It was $30.00 buck and worth every penny! I took it to a friends for dinner and he was all smiles…

  88. September 4, 2007

    Bobinnati

No, not the numbers on the blackboard again – and a high number at that! Another nine months of anticipation……. Being relatively new to wine, I haven’t had that many Washington wines. I do enjoy the 2002 Hogue Genesis Syrah however.

  89. September 4, 2007

    jcbphd

All of this talk of poop and farts makes me think of a thundermug. Maybe that’s what Gary could name the “big ass glass.”

QOTD: Flying Fish Merlot, although it has been 3 years or so since I had this wine, and my tastes may have changed/matured since then.

  90. September 4, 2007

    onemore

Hmm… I haven’t had many Washington State wines. I once shared a bottle of 2004 L’Ecole Ferguson with friends and we loved it. (Note to self: Buy more!) I’ve also had and enjoyed that 2004 L’Ecole 41 cabernet sauvignon. I had a couple glasses of 2003 Hogue Genesis cabernet sauvignon not too long ago and liked it more than I thought I would.

I’ve had a few pinot noirs from Washington. Last good one I remember was a Van Duzer.

I need to explore more Washington wines. It’s been on my to-do list since early this year but, well, I can’t seem to stay out of the Rhone and Bordeaux aisles of wine shops. I’m still searching for a good US merlot (my favorite merlots seem to come from France… sigh) so I’ll probably try some from WA.

  91. September 4, 2007

Thanks for pre-recorded shows and not leaving us hanging, much appreciated.

QOTD – Have not had any but I will when a certain WL employee comes to his senses (probably sooner than that given the level of dementia).

You have the number wrong it’s 252 and directed at same said employee:

Good show. The L’ecole No. 41 Cab rocks like a quality Napa Cab and the Columbia Crest Merlot was also pretty good.

Looking forward to receiving our Vayniac Cab.

Not many Washington wines I’ve had, or none have been turn on to be honest but I’ll seek out a little more. By the way I have noticed on a few wines some black water component on the nose, but nothinng like diaper poop. Hey gary you gotta be kidding me…..ahhhh and some on the tasting as well…… might be a stinky interesting wine…. Gary sometimes I think your are a lit.. crazy……jajaja

What am I hoarding? All of my Ross Andrew, Betz and Stevens (although I did break out the 424 the day I bought it because it was so amazing, and went back to the winery the next weekend and bought more). Will be picking up my XY on Sunday…ghastly good, that. Am impatiently awaiting my Delille D2 and Doyenne Aix. My favorite WA wine that no one has heard of? 2003 Crichlow Claret. I have one bottle left and I think the guy is no longer making wine (rumor was he was making it in his garage…and it was F’N AWESOME!!) Also liked 2004 Alexandria Nicole Quarry Butte, nice red blend…uh…gad, I could go on and on…SOMEBODY STOP ME!!! :)

    Great Episode.
I love WA wines, but I might be biased as I live in Seattle.
Hard to pick one wine, my three favorites would have to be Quilceda Creek Cab, Cayuse Bionic Frog Syrah, and the Owen Roe Cab Franc.

The only time I was never carded for alcohol was when I bought a bottle of Woodward Canyon Merlot as an Xmas gift for mom less than a month after my 21st birthday. That was almost ten years ago so it was probably a mid-90s vintage. Someone mentioned that merlots have a raspberry component so mom and I thought the wine actually had raspberries in it. Knew zero about wine except for this; that wine was delicious.

I’d also have to give props to the Dr. Loosen/Ch. Ste. Michelle collaboration riesling Eroica. I’ve drank two vintages (years are cloudy) but both were rockin’.

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: I’ve tried very few from Wash (that I know of), but there was some inexpensive white from Chateau St. Michelle that impressed me once. I made it a point to remember the maker/label, but not the varietal.

Kerry Rhodes is THE BEST?!?!? Ahem, yes he is great, and one of my favorites (I did draft him as an IDP on my fantasy team this year AND last year), but…. Rhodes is still behind Polamalu, Bob Sanders, Sean Taylor, and — of course — ED REED. I’d have Rhodes tied at fifth best, with Adrian Wilson. Caw! Caw!

Holy CRAP! KRAUSERS?!? I haven’t seen one of those since I was a kid living in Jersey.

As for Washington wines – I just had my first. Red Diamond 2006 (!!!) Merlot from the Columbia Valley. It smelled like grape jam with strawberries mixed in, and tasted like cinnamon raisin and grape juice. Very fruity, and finally showed me in dramatic fashion how different New World wines can be from Old World (I’ve been drinking lots of red Bordeaux!).

    Ciao,

Interesting segment on Walla Walla. Definitely interested about that “diaper” smell that you got from the Syrah. I smelled that particular bouquet on the nose the other day, but the wine itself was awful….wondering how it could be good.

QOTD: Haven’t tried any, but will before they get too pricey although I am an old world fan, I will try and branch out cause you’ve recommended it.

QOTD: sounds like a great opportunity for a wine tasting vacation: 3 rivers.

Three of us just went to a Spanish mini-white-wine tasting at Slate Street. The Albarino was the winner. Followed at home by an Ombra red with tortilla soup and cheeses. We’ve been enjoying the Spanish wines we ordered from Wine Library. Each of the Spsnish wines we try is singular and distinct. And the last one poured is always the most memorable.

    Grape Expectations

I live in Washington and have a local store that specializes in Washington wines and they’ve always got new stuff open to taste. Some of it’s from tiny producers like Va Piano. The Va Piano 2005 Syrah is real barnyard stuff (fresh meat, smoke, pepper, wet wool)–not a blueberry or Dr. Pepper in the neighborhood.

QOTD: Stevens 424 2004 Yakima Valley Red Wine (45% cab, 35% cab franc, 20 merlot). Andrake Cellars ded.reckoning #4 2004 Horse Heaven Hills Syrah. Owen Sullivan BSH (Brick S*** House) Meritage.

Washington was not on my wine radar..well, it’s now!

  122. September 4, 2007

    the drew

QOTD – Looks like the GV is lofting up a nice little pitch for the drew to smack out of the park like Pujols baby, done. Born and raised in Washington and my list of top Washington wines is thick.

A lot of people talking about the home runs, Leonetti Cellar and Cayuse and Woodward Canon and Ste Michelle’s Eroica and L’ecole (not my personal fav) etc etc.

But let’s get into some other wineries that I think are under the radar.

Cougar Crest, not seeing a lot of love for Cougar Crest here but the Cab and Reserve Cab are solid. Absolutely friggin’ Solid.

Canoe Ridge, for the price, seriously one of the top values hands down. Late Harvest Gewürztraminer is one of the best dessert wines I’ve ever had, only topped by Sauternes.

aMaurice, that’s right. Keep this one up your sleeve GV, Ned and Co will be bringing serious thunder in the years to come. Not even at estate grown fruit yet and already some pretty phenomenal old school style wines.

Amavi, especially their syrahs. Never heard of Amavi? How about Pepperbridge? Yeah, same winemaker with cheaper price point. Amavi makes exceptional syrah. Second to Cayuse in my opinion and for what I like in a syrah.

Patrick M Cellars makes some pretty lame wines, BUT, if you are into Cab Franc, seriously seek this guy out. Ridiculous Cab Francs.

And another little place that isn’t getting much press yet but can hold it’s own with some solid wines is Di Stefano. Not my favorite WA wine but solid solid stuff coming out of there.

And my all time favorite bottle from WA, sorry Gary, we’re not revealing that little secret in a public forum. The drew has a few spades left up his sleeve and I’m 9 months away from the announcement.

  123. September 4, 2007

K Syrah for sure (several incarnations: all good). And best cheap stuff: House Wine.

    Kopi Luwak

I work in the wine industry in Oregon so I get exposed to lots of WA juice. My experience is that it seems like everything produced from Ciel du Cheval vineyards is a safe bet to be great. Obviously the best grapes make the best wine. So it’s no coincidence that the best winemakers usually end up securing the best vineyards. It’s a chicken/egg thing. Also, be warned WA grapes can get ridiculously ripe, so the wines can be New Worldish and highly alcoholic. But they can be “profound” too. Woodward Canyon. Novelty Hill. Abeja. Whitman. Andrew Will. Dunham Cellars. All of these (in good years) have been awesome. And that’s the tip of the iceberg.

  126. September 4, 2007

    Damon

Aside from the usual big name suspects from Washington, a small producer that we love is Sparkman Cellars, especially the Stella Mae Syrah. Talk about asparagus tips…Gary would be all over the 2004 for the vegetables.

So excited to see more Walla Walla wines on the show!

QOTD: One winery I’m super excited about right now is Ensemble Cellars. Cab Sauv dominated Bordeaux blends. Release One is fabulous (and sold out). Release Two is amazing! Seriously, Craig Nelsen knows what he’s doing.

But I still can’t pick a favorite. There are too many good ones out there!

    QOD:
Had a Leonetti Sangiovese 1999? about 6 mos ago.
It was one of the most extracted, intense wines I have ever had.
However, it was a discounted (New Orleans restaurant flood sale wine!) and was high to mid shoulder fill with a seepage around the cork and a syrup under the seal! I thought it wasn’t going to be good for those reasons, but was I surprised! Went to the internet to buy 2 more bottles and tried one -
turned out to be not that intense! Saving the other to either microwave or put away for a few years. Maybe the New Orleans heat cooked this wine just right. One of those one in a lifetime experiences!!! john

How funny. We were in Walla Walla this past weekend. L’ecole seemed highly over rated. We agree with the comment below about Cougar Crest. Wineries of the weekend were Spring Valley, Pepper Bridge and Rulo.

We found many wines really out of balance – subtle (read weak, for me) nose, nice mid-palate, followed by a somewhat awkward transition to a massive finish.

Our overall impression is that this is a really promising area in which winemakers are still trying to determine what grows best where. We are looking forward to a repeat visit – but not for a few years.

    Interesting.

I have trouble believing that a dirty diaper can be appealing, Gary, I guess it’s one of those subtle things that makes sense within the context of the fact that the liquid in question is still composed of grapes, and not feces…Although Pomegranate sounds good.

    Mike S.

QOTD: Never had one (as far as I know) Why? dono.

BUT I do have a question for YOU (and It’s not about the quickly approaching Temecula episode). . . . . If I wanted to try my first Washington wine, what would you reccommend it be?

  139. September 5, 2007

    Moselman

Wondered what peeps were talking about with Dr. Loosen as a WA wine! Wasn’t aware of the association. However, I was astounded to find the Dr’s riesling as a special at a local shop for $20. Yum-eee! Will have to watch for it again and take a closer look for the WA connection.

QOTD Not observed: On a ’southern’ trip across Washington a couple of years ago, we were disappointed with the choice of local wines offered in the restaurants we visited. I’d done some research and was excited about what we might get to try. Stopped in Leavenworth and Yakima, stayed over in Wenatchee and Spokane. Only in Spokane did we find a little bistro sort of place with a good list of Washington whites.

Well, I just learned of this website yesterday. I’d never even heard of Gary Vaynerchuk until about 36 hours ago. Technically, I was a lurker, and now I’m registered. I’m finishing off a Meridian 06 PN – I reviewed it at Cork’d, for what it’s worth to anybody else (I’m a novice, but I know what I like). So far, I can only really talk intelligently about two bottles of wine – both pinots – and maybe not even that intelligently, but I’m still getting my feet wet. On the plus side, my in-laws are wine LOVERS, and an annual trip to Napa is pretty much guaranteed. My next venture will be a good, cheap shiraz. And so ends this pointless comment.

  142. September 5, 2007

    wildebeest

Oh man, that diaper stuff really grossed me out. I grew up on a cattle ranch, and it was not uncommon for me to be covered in manure by the end of the day. Manure doesn’t gross me out at all; it’s just highly processed grass. But diapers are another matter entirely. My little brothers were eight years and twelve years younger than me, so I’ve spent plenty of my childhood and adolescence surrounded by the inescapable stench of baby. It’s not the human feces that bothered me. I can handle shit, and I can handle manure. But the smell of both baby-powder and diaper-rash ointment are enough to make me sick, even to this day.

  143. September 5, 2007

    wildebeest

267, huh? Good gawd, I sure hope it doesn’t take that long for you guys to whip Cork’d into shape!

QOTD: I honestly can’t remember if I’ve had anything from WA, but I was born in Pullman (WSU). Maybe I should try to find some ‘79 WA vintage and see if it’s aged any better than I have.

Interesting show GV, ….. sounds like washington is similar to Pyrenees in Victoria with colder climate (old world) type wines…… one that reminds me is the Dalwhinie wine…. it smelled dirty but really nice, unlike real old world like rhone but with more fruits……

QOTD : Since I really enjoy dessert wines, this one is simple … Blackwood Canyon 1988 December Harvest (Riesling), closely followed by the Blackwood Canyon 1986 Pinnacle (also Riesling), which pours out of the bottle about like maple syrup. The December Harvest was easily everyone’s favorite wine when I served it at a little gathering this last spring, beating out several other wines, including the Royal Tokaji 2000 Red Label, which was #46 on WS’s list of top 100 last year.

I never pass up the opportunity to stop by Blackwood Canyon when passing through the Benton City area. It does help to have a designated driver along though, as the tasting sessions can become quite lengthy, but never boring.

  153. September 5, 2007

    Your downunder friend

My name is Tim Wilson and I am/was a lurker. If this was not bad enough I have been a lurker for 2 months… I know, shameful. Every time Gary pointed the finger at the camera his finger extended down into the pits of my soul. I have come for redemption : )

As an Australian in Sydney it is hard enough to find California Cabernet, let alone Washington State Cabernet. Sadly Australia is still very insular in its wine outlook. I think Gary needs to establish an wine outpost here and teach us Australian to look beyond $5 Lindemans and Yellow Tail (that is right, we drink it here to).

Saying that I am a little annoyed that Barossa Shiraz/syrah is always what is associated with Australia over in the States. Please, please please look at cooler climate Victorian Shirazs (such as Heathcote), cooler climate South Austrlian shirazs (such as eden valley and clare valley) and cooler NSW (such as the hunter valley)- I PROMISE YOU, there are fewer fruit bombs and far more violets and black pepper to be found here.

Finally, thank you for teaching me so much already Gary and may I say my hellos to WLTV community.

  154. September 5, 2007

    Winenerd

    Hi Gary,
The burnt match smell you mentioned, describing the Pepper Bridge Merlot is often associated with sulphur dioxide addition in the winery. What happens is that in the winemaking progress there is SO2 added to stabilize the wine ( protects it from oxidation and kills remaining yeasts and bacteria ). Too much SO2 and an anaerobic ( “without oxygen” ) storage may cause this smell which is considered a flaw. Decanting the wine for a couple of minutes will make the smell vanish. Next time you better decant this wine before drinking!
Other than that did I enjoy the show.
    Konst

my computer connection has been totally on the fritz so i missed a few shows – glad to have caught this one! through the knowledge of a few forum members i just bought a mixed case to break my closet’s WA cherry!

great show and i am peering up and to my left too late i’m afraid!

QofD: Cayuse Syrah i had @ a dinner party in Napa like 2 years ago that blew away every other wine on that table. recently had a Stevens Bordeaux blend that was just so balanced and top tier i was shocked.

    1. 1998 Quilceda Creek Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauv.
    2. 2001 L’ Ecole No. 41 Pepperbridge Vineyard Apogee
    3. 2003 K Vinters “The Creator” Walla Walla Valley (I believe a GSM)

No question Washington is my favorite region in North America, and I agree, and fear, that it might become too hot-headed, too full of itself. Still, I think the rocky terrain and soil of Walla Walla is ideal for Syrah and the winemakers there (Charles Smith of K, and Christopher Baron of Cayuse) are making some of the best terroir driven wines in the “New World.” You made it seem like Washington is soooooo “new world” which it very well is headed in that direction, however I still think it is way ahead of anything from California or Oregon as far as being terroir driven and “Old world”-esque. The wines are big in alcohol, much like Aussie Shirazs, but something makes them different (baby diapers for example.) and that difference comes from the excellent rocky terroir.

Good show! I’m now living in Washington and have tried a few of the local wines. So far so good, looking forward to trying Gary’s reccomendations; he is right on the mark with his reviews.

QOTD: Hard to say about a favorite Washington State wine. I haven’t had nearly as much of it as I would like. Locally (in Chicago), the WA wines seem to be either fairly low end or out of my price range. An inexpensive Syrah I have liked is Snoqualme.

A few years ago, on vacation in Seattle and willing to pay vacation/restaurant prices, the wines were very impressive. We were lucky enough to be in town for a winemaker dinner at Restaurant Zoe featuring DeLille Cellars — 6 courses and 5 wines introduced by DeLille owner/partner Jay Soloff. That was a memorable night. Another memorable evening was spent at Assaggio with an osso bucco and a 2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon.

QOTD: I’ve only had one wine from Washington and can’t remember the vintage but it was a Chateau St. Michelle Cab Sav. It was back in my CKC days cira 1997 and was one of the first few bottles that really got me into wine. Unfortunately, the LCBO in Ontario Canada does a dreadful job of stocking wines from this area. We get the odd Columbia Crest Grand Estates (at $20 where I understand it’s $6 in the US) and that’s about it.

    Great episode.

Thanks for spotlighting Washington – which I know very little about.

QOTD = I’m clearly a moron for not looking into Washington…

QOTD: I have been using the Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Chardonnay (04, 05 and 06 vintages) as a house chard for a while. It is tough to beat the QPR at ~$12. Plus I don’t cringe when Grandma Boehm drops the ice cubes in the glass. For a few more bucks the CSM Cold Creek and Canoe Ridge chards are also great but I wait to find them heavily discounted.

  173. September 5, 2007

    eduardo amaral

QOTD: Have not had the chance to taste lots of it. I do like some of Hogue as well as Ste Michelle, and Columbia Crest… But L’Ecole 41 still stands at the no. 1, if my memory does not betray me.

    Cheers

  174. September 5, 2007

    Karl B.

QOTD – I stay away from Washington wines because it seems the cooler climates leave a stronger anise type flavor in the red wines that I do not enjoy. I prefer the hotter climates of Napa and Bordeaux.

The Jets will not defeat the Patriots this year, period. Pats: 34 Jets: 13

Great show. Crazy nose on that last wine.

    Patriots 31, Jets 17

QOTD: Haven’t had too many higher end Washington State wines, but my favorite in recent memory that I had a restaurant was the L’Ecole 41 Syrah, 2004 I think.

Great Episode! I’m actually heading out to Walla Walla this weekend!!

QOTD: 2002 Basel Cellars Syrah – Trey Busch (winemaker) Rules!!! His new project Sleight of Hand should be great as well.

    Gary,

Here’s a show suggestion – taste the three Long Shadows wines you have at WL. Shows the power and quality of Washington fruit when big time winemakers from around the world are willing to come and put their stamp on the region.

I’m not sure I could get past a wine with baby poop smell to it so i doubt I would enjoy that wine in any which way.
My favorite WA wine is Quelcida Creek almost any vintage. Their list isn’t too tough to get on and the prices are still reasonable. I did have a blend that was a cooperative project with an Italian winery and Chateau St. Michelle that was Cab and Sangiovese that was absolutely delicious but they only sell it at the winery and I’m not sure they still produce it.

    Steve J

    My favorite Washington State wine?

Probably a Columbia Winery Red Willow Vineyard Cab/Meritage from like 1978 or 79.

I haven’t kept up lately with the big stuff from WA. The Otis Vineyard sutff back then was damn good, too.

  181. September 5, 2007

QOTD: Chateau Ste. Michelle delivers, esp for the price.

You said the Cab-Franc is primed for vegetals, but N. Americans push it into fruits. If the “natural” state of a wine is one way, how do they make it into something totally different? Maybe you’ll be covering something along this line of questioning with the Vayniac wine process?

I’ve got to try the Delile and L’Ecole. Right down my “new world” alley! Still working my way through Oregon wines and just beginning to dabble in Washington. I’ve got my work cut out for me…

    ScottB

Great show Gary! I have a bottle of the 2004 Doyenne in the cellar. Not sure if I’m quite as excited about opening it after the diaper comments.

QOTD: I have about 10 other bottles of various WA wines in the cellar, any of which could become my favorite (Cayuse en Chamberlin, K Ovide, DeLille Chaleur & Harrison Hill). Of the ones I’ve actually tried, I like the 2004 DeLille D2 (which has become very hard to find) and some of the red blends from Cadence.

  186. September 5, 2007

oops…must also mention the 2003 Reininger Syrah from Walla Walla. Excellent wine and only about $26.

Hey Gary, 2nd time posting, so I’m not a lurker anymore.

QOTD: I know a little about Washington wines as I did a wine tour there in June. Loved SO MANY WA wines! My favorite I guess is “boutique” b/c it’s a small winery but Maison de Padgett and Horizon’s Edge – two FUN wines.

I also enjoyed Hedges, Barnard Griffin, Powers, too many to remember right now.

Having just moved out of Washington St I’m thrilled to see this episode. Kentucky doesn’t quite carry the selection of value priced wines that I could find in WA. QOTD- 2000 Arbor Crest Dionysus. Very nice Bordeaux style wine. The 2001 was very good as well.

Finally, a long overdue Washington wine spotlight show. If I can recall almost all of the Washington wines you’ve reviewed on the show have been solid scoring wines…the lowest being(correct me if I’m wrong) an 85pt 2003 L’ecole Seven Hills Merlot. I think your absolutely correct in recognizing the purity of fruit in Washington wines. I’ve also experienced earthier style wines from Washington. One of my favorites is Winemaker Charlie Hoppes’s 2003 Fidelitas Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon…can you say “loam”. I was a big fan of 2002 Gordon Brothers Merlot with hints of coffee, leather, and roasted sage leaf. In fact, I’ve enjoyed almost all of their estate grown red wines of recent vintage. You’d do yourself a favor by sampling some Washington Rieslings as well. The 2005 Hogue Genesis Riesling, for example, is loaded with honey-lemon and petrol infused peaches all with a terrific acidic backbone that would give many wines from Alsace and Mosel a run for their money…especially @

    Stevo

Great show…again. Cant say I had any that you have tried, hopefully I can find it around Hawaii. QOTD= Eroica Reisling, Dr. Loosen and Chateau St. Michelle got it right. This is the only reisling that I have enjoyed coming out of USA

I was invited to a comparative tasting of some of Washington’s NorthStar Merlots against some of the Prestige Cru wines from St Emilion and Pomerol. As such, I decided to hold off commenting until after the tasting.

I’m not a professional by any stretch of the imagination. I was invited by a friend who had taken a position at St Michelle Wine Estates, the parent company of Northstar, and was one of the only non-industry people there.

The three flights that we tasted were:

    1st Flight
    2003 NorthStar Columbia Valley Merlot
    2003 Chateau Bellevue Mondotte
    2003 Chateau Clos Fourtet
    2003 Chateau L’Evangile
    2003 Chateau Pavie

    2nd Flight
2003 NorthStar Walla Walla Valley Merlot
    2003 Chateau Cheval Blanc
    2003 Chateau La Gomerie
    2003 Chateau Magrez-Fombrauge
    2003 Chateau Pavie Macquin

    3rd Flight
    2004 NorthStar Columbia Valley Merlot
    2004 Chateau Bellevue Mondotte
    2004 Chateau LaFleur Pomerol
    2004 Chateau L’Evangile
    2004 Chateau Pavie

The tasting was done double blind, and the 2003 and 2004 Columbia Valley Merlot was chosen by the group over the rest. It was definitely made in the old world style, and would have taken someone expecting a fruit bomb by surprise.

The other interesting thing was that in these wines, the aromas and flavors that neophyte oenophiles (including myself) sometimes struggle were amazingly obvious.

QOTD: 2003 NorthStar Columbia Valley Merlot

I haven’t seen the show yet, I think your server or mine is down. I have read all the comments. Nice to see Matthews and Whitman mentioned. I can’t believe how many folks get to taste Quilceda, Leonetti, and Cayuse! Awesome! I would like to mention a couple of wines from Oregon that are in the Walla Walla AVA. One is Le Ecole’s Seven Hills 2002 Syrah. Seven Hills is a fantastic vinyard located in Oregon, the other is Zerba an Oregon producer who grows and makes his own Syrah. I suggest his 2003 Estate Syrah. Put your hat on backwards before trying these!

  203. September 6, 2007

QOTD: Springl Valley “Uriah” and “Frederick” (Right Bank and Left Bank style blends, respectively), both absolutely magnificent. Also Long Shadows “Feather” (made by Randy Dunn) and Forgeron Chardonnay, a really clean white.

I’m a recent transplant from the midwest to the Columbia valley area. Ok so Washington state is #2 in the U.S. in wine production & 90% of you people never knew about this stuff. I dont know why it’s such a secret. I’m the guy in love with dessert wines always looking for German Eiwein. So to answer the QOTD it would be #2 Tera Blanca chenin blanc ice wine and #1 is 2004 Siegerrebe from Bainbridge Island Winery. sweet golden honey my friend.

Hysterical episode. I have had a few Washington wines over the years but since I’ve been paying attention about six months ago, the only one I’ve had is the ‘06 Chateau St Michelle Dry Rose that Gary tasted on ep. 270. Serious bang for the buck there.

  211. September 7, 2007

    Kirk B

QOTD: ‘03 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon is really stellar (Vanilla Coffee nose). Watch for the Abeja ‘05 Syrah, liquid candy! Carriage House Cab – any year. ‘04 Steven’s 424. Soo’s Creek Artist Series (any year). ‘04 Bear Ursa (Lance Bear passed earlier this year, really a loss to the Washington Wine Industry). Anything made by DeLille (any year). ‘03 Whitman Narcissa. Can anyone really pick just one?

Washington wines rock!!! Although I have had great wines form many wineries, the two producers that I buyfutures from every year for the last five are Cayuse and K Vintners. Although there are great Cab Sauvs. & Merlots, this place shines regarding Syrah! Chekc out last month’s Wine Spectator for an article onthe region.

Matthews makes a high end wine that I only know as “Red”.
They also make a lower end wine named “Claret”.

It is a traditional Bordeaux Blend – or Meritage.

im a viticulture student at washington state university tri city campus. Had a seminar from the head winemaker at pepperbridege(Jean Francois Pellet) last wednesday. He grew up in a swiss family his father a winemaker. He’s produced wine in Switzerland, bordeoux, Napa Valley, and Washington presently. New school meets old school Vaynerchuk! Your good people and for the record I agree with the tom Brady referance. We are located in the heart of the columbia valley and wanna give props for washington wine country! I wanna see an episode on cheap columbia valley cabs. bernard Griffin, pepperbridge, seth ryan, hedges (CMS), terra blanca, tamarack cellers (fire house red is fantasticand my future best man is an intern doin the dirty work in the vineyard and cellar). These are the $10-$15 columbia cabs. Synopsis: Visit Washington Wine Country (Via Tri-City) and enjoy life as a vayniac!

Loved the episode, I have to agree with the Chatter creek (their syrah is better). I have many favorites, but if pressed, I would have to say 2001 Northstar Merlot. I adore Sineann Pinot Noir (the vino-seals they use are very elegant) and so is the wine. For big reds- Leonetti (not very affordable anymore).

Best I had in 2007…? K Vitners Cougar Mountain Syrahhhhhhhhh. For 35 US dollars it was amazing. I’m also a huge fan of Fielding Hills Syrahhhhs. As a lifelong Washington resident, Im glad to see the wines bringing some thunder. Although you didnt seem to be blown away, you were at least giving them some praise, and I have to be happy for that. Im planning on doing a wine trip to Walla Walla or Yakima with my parents this year, so that should be some good times. QOTD: As I am still new to getting into wines and such, I havent tried a ton from this area. I do really like the Chateau St. Michelle Muscat Canelli though.
