Mama Vaynerchuk: I guess considering all the other stuff he has eaten I should’ve known he’d eat the darn gum…. sorry.

Pats are gonna get a spankin’ for the sidelines hijinx, taking away draft picks…. harsh… but I’m sure you would prefer them forfeiting the win.

Conrats on Ellen that show will be off the hook!

I took you up on your free shipping today, my cart had 2 cases of wine about half of which were at the single digit price point (I’m exploring, pal, I’m exploring). I forgot the lurker shirt (hey I used to be one) and called back to add to the order. I was told some of the wines were low in stock. I have an Amon Ra 1.5 liter and a Penfold’s Grange still in the cart now, it should be interesting to see what they’ll replace.

Can’t wait for the contests to fill out the 10, hopefully there’s no video involved (there’s too much talent in the Vaynernation for a po’ boy to compete).

QOTD: Carina Cellars Seven Percent 2005 and Patrice Rion Bourgogne Rouge 2005 enjoyed them both (and that’s all that matters)

Wow, really happy you discovered two good whites under 15 bones.

QOTD: Too bad you weren’t asking what are the last six wines you tried. The last two are a 2004 Twenty Rows Cabernet and a 2003 Jacobs Creek Reserve Shiraz.

Okay I’ll let you in on the last six. Did a vertical of Gaia blends, 1999 through 2002. And GW, just so you know, the 2002 had a screw top.

2005 Pillar Box Red (one of the best wine values I’ve ever had [the above wine was a great value also], purchased cases of this stuff and still find a few lost bottles in local stores from time to time. Avoid the 2006, it’s half the wine the 2005 is)

    – ‘02 vache pinot noir from cienega valley, ca – the nose made me smile, for the first time I sort of got a hint of that bacon you talk about

Hey, thanks for giving me a new inexpensive white to try. I’ll have to stick that Stickleback into my shopping cart. QOTD: aw, shit; do I dare answer this? Do I lie? ok, most recent was a Baccari’s Monferrato Dolcetto, and before that… *cringe* a Sutter Home Muscat. Yep, I should’ve lied and said anything else. Hey, I was curious. And no, I will never make that mistake again. Now you’ll never respect me. *sigh*

First time to comment, but I’ve been lurking for a while. Gary, thank you for doing this. YOU bring the thunder. Along the lines of value, could you do an episode on Cote de Blaye claret? I was brought up on these wines and would like your take on this area of Bordeaux.

I work at ‘Crown Wine & Spirits’ in Ft.Lauderdale,FL. We have wines open to taste, everyday. The other day it was ‘Chateau Ducasse’,lovely lovely. Also, a surprise ‘Estancia’ Sauvignon Blanc. Very delicious for it’s 9.99 price tag. A creamy lemon curd flavor, much like the lovely ‘chateau Ducasse’. Really nice. I also think of the ‘Amanya’ sauvignon blanc I had a while back. Delicious. Those are the last two wines I had.
Thanks, Gary !!!! I always learn from your shows. It’s great fun,too !

Oregon Pinot Gris, I’m seeking that out now. I just had Wine by Joe Pinot Gris this weekend and thought it was excellent.

QOTD – A Pio Cesare Dolcetto, becaus after that episode I had to try one. Glad I did. And at this very moment a Valkenburg Gewurz, also a first for me. I’m discovering I have a real aversion to the oak monster and enjoy old world wines. Gary has been THE instrument of this discovery process. I’m a wine newbie and watching this video blog has taught me enough to conduct my own tasting experiments and discover what I like/don’t like. Without what I’ve learned here I’d be flying blind.

  76. September 11, 2007

    fatherthechair

Encouraging episode, will give both the whites a try. Kind of cheating sneaking the 90 point comment in there– I sympathize, it must be torture not to give scores all week, but thanks!

QOTD Innocent Bystander Shiraz/Viogner (really liked it) and a pretty nice Pinot Noir whose name I can’t remember, at a restaurant in Westchester County, NY called La Crémaillère. It had a blue label.

  77. September 11, 2007

    Terry Funk

Nice show Gary, I’m liking these value wine shows too.

QOTD: 2006 Mirassou Sauvignon Blanc – this was actually pretty enjoyable, nice aroma, nice melon flavors, with grapefruit and pear on the end
2005 Peter Lehmann Clancy’s Red – one of my all time favorites, silky, smooth new world wine…just delicious

  78. September 11, 2007

    Kopi Luwak

Interesting note re: A to Z. Good value, but they don’t actually make wine. They’re more like negotiants – buying up bulk from around the Willamette Valley and throwing their label in it. However they recently bought up Rex Hill, so as of this year (07 vintage) they now have a winery to make some of their own wine.

My last two wines with notes:

2003 Dehesa de Rubiales Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León – What the hell is Prieto Picudo? Whatever it is, it’s kicking my ass tonight. I was expecting typical Spanish New World style, but this ended up being an Old World job. At first, it was incredibly vegetal. Like a bloody mary. Massive celery action on the nose, sprinkled with spices and cocoa. As it open up, it becomes extremely complex with more flavors than I can describe in this drunken state. Don’t let that deter you. Pop it, give it lots of air. Try it over a long evening. This is one of the most interesting wines I’ve had in a long time.

2006 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Gobelsburger – A good example of Riesling done in a dry style. Tasted slightly cooler than room temp. Very crisp and clean, with petrol on the nose. Vibrant palette with apple and nice mineral notes. Great acidity. Should pair beautifully with shellfish. A bit one dimensional but well-made and very pleasing.

Love the value episodes! I enjoy comparing tasting notes, because these are the wines I drink. I thought the Bogle Pinot was a solid value Pinot.
QOTD; The last 2 wines were a 2005 Burga’ns Albarino which was good with grilled jalapeno marinated shrimp, and a 2005 Castle Rock Pinot Monterey county, which was nice with grilled wild Coho Salmon.

2003 Pepper Bridge Winery Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley is dark ruby-colored with a lovely perfume of pain grille, scorched earth, red currants, black currants, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a medium-bodied wine with a broad core of ripe, layered fruit, and good integration of oak, tannin, and acidity. It narrows out just a bit in the finish. Give it 3-4 years to round out and drink it through 2030. Tel. (509) 525-6502; http://www.pepperbridgewinery.com
    \\
1997 Andrea Oberto Barolo Vigneto Rocche

The 1997 Barolo Vigneto Rocche boasts huge quantities of glycerin, which, combined with high alcohol, low acidity, and jammy black cherry and blackberry fruit, makes for an opulent texture and viscous mouth feel. It is a freak as far as classic Barolo goes, but a delicious one. Layered, thick, and almost over the top, it is a knock-out, dramatic effort that will be immensely popular. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020. No known American importer.

QOTD: 2003 Chateau Montelena Estate Cab. Really a beautifully balanced wine that reminded my of my trip to Napa this spring. What a beautiful winery they have at Montelena. 2004 Ferrari Carano Cab. Also good, but very different style. Reds at Ferrari are really underrated, in my opinion.

Great news about the upcoming TV appearance. Lately I tried a new Lebanese wine: Syrah Cave Kouroum vallée de la Bekaa 2003, for 20$ CAD (probably 15$ in US). This is a relatively new winery (http://www.cavekouroum.com) and I was really surprised by the quality of this wine at this price point. The wine maker claims an aging potential of 20 yrs!! To me it was a 90 pointer (see it on Cork’d). I also tried E. Guigal Chateauneuf-du-pape 1999 and I was totally excited when I knew that it was WS wine of the year for 2002..So my expectations were very high to the extent that I was a bit disappointed with the wine..Of course it was great but I found the finish kinda short for something of such a stature..
    Cheers

    QOTD:

2004 Montesecondo Toscano Rosso: an awesome wine for ~$15. Very nervy red fruit flavors of cherry, raspberry, and cranberry. Great with food.

2005 Barmes-Buecher Cramant d’Alsace: a very interesting sparkling white made with Alsatian grape varieties. Not at all like Champagne. Apples, earth, and sweaty/oyster mushroom charateristics with a creamy mouth-feel.

QOTD – Los Lirios Malbec from Argentina and a Petite Sirah from Rosenblum – I think Heritage Clones or something. Oh actually a Valpolicella that will remain nameless because I always trust Andy at Cafe Emelia.

So happy to hear you will draw names for the trip to Cali for the Vayniak Cab thing. A very cool gesture.

    Congrats on the Ellen show!

OTD: 1 – 2006 Alamos Malbec – actually pretty good first night, better second night. Slightly mollified my distaste for Malbec. Will try the ‘05 Pascual Toso Maipu Mendoza next.

2- Friends brought a Gray Fox Chardonnay ‘06. I shuddered, but was quite pleasantly surprised. Not what I’d call oaky, label makes no mention either way. We all enjoyed it, so all’s well.

QOTD – I’ll give you the last three
Strub NB Kabinett 2005 – rich, peachy, but not enough acidity to cover the sweetness
Vionta Albarino 2006 – Crisp, but with weight on the mouthfeel, without the oakiness. Has a slight bitter nut skin flavor. Good deviation from the standard whites.
Bogle RRV Pinot 2005 – Pop & pour. Average, not bad, not that smooth, kind of thin. Not up to the hype. Maybe would have improved with air.

tomorrow – making a Thai dinner, having Christoffel UW Spatlese 2005. That will be some good stuff!

Thanks for doing the budget wines this week – those of us who don’t have expense accounts (i.e. the self-employed) really appreciate it! Not that I don’t like to splurge once in a while…

QOTD: Tegernseerhof 2006 Zweigelt Rose (from Kremstal, Austria) and Ipsum 2006 from Rueda, Spain (60% Verdejo, 40% Viura) – both were new varietals for me – yay for exploration!

    QOTD –

2004 Plum Creek Riesling from Colorado. You should see about getting wine from this producer. Fooled everyone at a blind tasting who thought is was a Mosel riesling. Bought it in Winter Park, CO. Really nice.

Pazzzzzzz! Thin, bitter tannins, the type of wine that (to me) gives grenache a bad name.

    2. 2005 – Lirac Alain Jaume “Clos de Sixte”, Rhone

QOTD: From Wine Library – 2005 A.P. Vin Pinot Noir, Gary’s Vineyard: a wonderful pinot. It reminded me of a cherry compote, or of the cherry sauce I make for my cherry pie – flour instead of cornstarch.
2003 F.LLI Giuliana Amarone dela Valpolicella – I think it was the most fun wine I’d ever had – I added some to pureed strawberries and it was great; then the next day I added some to pork chops in a crockpot – equally great.

QOTD: 1. Last evening was a bpttle of Pine & Post 2004 Chardonnay. My wife liked it more than I did.
    2. Tonight was a bottle of McGuigan 2002 BIN 3000 Merlot. We had it with a Texas size steak and it was okay after about the third glass for me but this one my wife did not like.

Comment: Gary, A little story for ya. I always swollow my gum also. Everytime I do though I think about my Aunt Ina whom always swollowed here gum for some 37 years and then had surgery to remove a recently found tumor in her stomach. When they sent the tumor off to pathology to see if it was cancerous they found that it was mostly made up of a rock hard substance that they later determined was gum. TRUE STORY….That was at age 42, she died two years ago at age 76. I still swollow every piece of gum I put in my mouth, I just don’t eat it that often. She was my favorite Aunt.

I’m with you on the Bogle pinot noir: not a fan. But I like Bogle’s petite sirah a lot. The Heartland Stickleback sounds interesting. Coconut, eh? Hmm.

QOTD: Last night’s wine was Guigal 2003 Cote-Rotie because (1) it’s one of my favorite reds and (2) a visiting friend had never tried a non-Australian shiraz—and I told him, “Are you kidding? Here, drink this!” And now he’s hooked.

Tonight I’m drinking Vinos Sin-Ley 2005 Monastrell No. 4 for the first time. I’m new to monastrell and man, the more of these wines I try (1st one I ever had was the Juan Gil 2005, just 2 days ago), the more I realize how much I like them, especially at these prices. Monastrell is my newest wine discovery.

  144. September 12, 2007

QOTD: Just finished the Peller Estates 2004 Cabernet-Merlot (British Columbia, about $14 CAD) – I think by Cabernet they meant Cabernet Franc, ’cause it was all vegetal, dry and astringent (so no, not the ‘good’ vegetal, GV). Horrible stuff.

Just opened the Bleasdale 2004 Langhorne Crossing Shiraz-Cabernet (Langhorne Creek, Australia – about $13) – a good value, but I remember it being better. Sort of fake fruit, cherry cola and cinnamon components with a way-too-hot finish and a smearing of bitter tannin.

I gotta get the lady to tape Ellen for me! Congrats!

glad you tasted the bogle pinot noir. i had it 3 days ago while at a pinot / red burgundy tasting, and I actually thought it was very pleasant. yes… a bit light compared to alot of the super extracted new world PN’s, but i found some nice fruit and none of the eucalyptus notes you mentioned. it was one of the crowd favorites and a great deal in my humble opinion.

I gotta admit, I’m liking the lack of point scores so far. Though it would be nice to not have it mentioned every so often what you *would* have given a particular wine that has impressed you, GV. Consistency is cool. :P

I’m really liking the pass/fail system as to whether or not the wine you’re tasting is worth the declared dollar price. It drives home the fact that scores are indeed rather irrelevant in such a subjective field like wine tasting. As a person who buys wine when my budget allows for the luxury, I’m more interested in getting a good value for my purchase rather than a sample of mediocre and overly-hyped wine.

And I’ll STILL be willing to try out any wine that is given multiple Z’s, if only just to see for myself why it got so many of them. :D

Thanks for the value wine episode. Bargains are very interesting. On the other hand, my last wines have been at the more middle area: last night with a visiting family from France, we contrasted a Chateau Talbot 2000 with a Penfold Coonawarra Shiraz 2004, bin 128. Pretty amusing with the new vs. old world contrast. I don’t have to tell you which one my Antibes friends liked better! Actually, I agreed as the Talbot really had a lot of interesting flavors to play out. Tonight I went out alone and enjoyed a couple glasses of Girardin 2003 Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots with bruschettas. Really smooth with a dusty finish. Nice wine from the Beaune area. Hi, Gary. Great line of shows you are doing this week. This is what make WLTV so GREAT – helping us to fine bargain wines that are excellent values. Although I know your views with respect to wine scoring, some of us have a lot of respect for your palate and, I for one, would like you to continue scoring the wines you taste.

In that regard, I’m looking for a good QPR Pinot Noir. I went through the WL listing of the 100+ Pinots you have in stock and found the you have only rated one that is $48 bones. How about doing some more?

TREMENDOUS!! Even the birds are on fire every day! QOTD: Incidently, two australian shirazes. Last night, Yellow Tail Shiraz The Reserve. I found a word for it: Popular. Not ordinary, but popular. Showing the obvious somewhat artificial and sugarfied characteristics. The previous wine was the Slipstream shiraz/grenache blend. Cherry cola and peppery.

    Last two wines:
Exlibris Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Columbia Valley. Very nice!

Michael Joseph Collection Grand Vin de France Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 OK

Have a great trip out to Cal!

    Great Show.
    QOTD:
2003 Langwerth Von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spätlese — enough said, love it with sushi.
2001 Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Reserva — A little too oaky right now, came around a bit the second day.

Ellen? How cool are you? I see Howie Mandel is on the same show, I cant imagine you two together in the green room, it will be nuts! I made sure it is set on my TIVO…cant wait to see it.

you said the Heartland Stickleback was light in alcohol.
I grew up with Rieslings and the majority were about 7.5%!!
I like lite(low alcohol not taste) wines, they burn less on the mouth.

1984 Sichel Riesling QUALITATSWEIN 8.2% by vol (alcohol)

light and very fruity – nice for a twenty yr old table wine ($3.99)

QOTD: Jackson-Triggs 2004 Hate Harvest Vidal (yummy yum yum, esp with fruit danish) which is one of my all-time faves and Salmon Run Rainbow Rose (also yummy)… although the Salmon Run was the last of 17 wines I tried (all Dr Frank and Salmon Run) at a wine tasting on Friday, which was an awesome time!

Great show Gary! I’m glad you liked a few of the affordable wines today. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for those! (although with free shipping… maybe I’ll just order them!)

Can’t wait for the Ellen show! I’m not as much a fan of hers as Connan, but I’m sure it’ll be awesome!

  177. September 12, 2007

    C-Dub Hammerhead

QOTD: 2003 Sanctuary Cabernet Sauvignon (first time I tried it… I was very impressed. Our server recommended it and I watched her sell three bottles of it in the hour I was there). 2004 Ehlers Estate Korte Ranch Zinfandel… I had to bring the hammer in for my birthday. This is my all-time favorite wine. I know I haven’t been in the game very long but I would put it up against any other of “the people’s grape”. It’s extremely difficult to find but well worth the search if you enjoy your vino chewy, peppery, spicy and meaty with an explosion on dark fruits on the back palate.

  178. September 12, 2007

    Charlie Wasabi

QOTD – Torbreck 2003 “The Factor” Shiraz … OMG! I’ve never had a wine with a never-ending attack before, but that had it – so I had to buy it ($$$ ouch!)

Chateau Talbot 2000 – lovely Bordeaux, but after the Torbreck monster – it wasn’t a fair fight.

    Wow The Ellen Show…kewl!!

QOTD: Cloud 9 Composition and Mumm Napa Brut Reserve 25th Anniversary. Very nice, very very dry!

Nice to see you exploring the value price points. Have you ever tried the Concannon Pinot Noir? Very nice for the price and I think Five Rivers make a decent one to. Although I really like the Benton Harbor!

    Have a fun trip!!

QOTD: Last two wines were Peter Lehmann ‘Futures’ Shiraz, Barossa, 2005(?) and a Taylors Late Bottled Vintage Port 2000; both pretty good. I’m glad you enjoyed the ‘Stickleback’.

    2004 stuhlmuller cab equally impressive

The last two wines I drank were:

Caduceus 2005 Nagual de la Naga
    E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone

The 2005 Nagual de la Naga was wonderful. A sort of Super Tuscan/Brunello, full of fruit and a little mystery. I don’t know if you’ve ever had it or heard of it, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s from Caduceus Cellars in Arizona, the wine is only available via website or if you go the the Page Springs Tasting room. Check it out, let me know if you’ve had it or are interested!

Actually 3 this week so far. Ramey 2002 Hyde Vineyards, 2000 Chateau Leoville Poiffere, Ferrari Carrano Trease 2003. I think 2000 and 2001 Bordeaux will be some of my best value buys in the last 3 years.

  191. September 12, 2007

    G. Tweeze

QOTD: 2006 Chateau St. Jean Fume Blanc ($12) and 2004 Carneros Shiraz ($11). Both very nice.

Good show. I’m really liking the theme this week, mainly bc this price range is right in my wheelhouse…not a balla yet, I guess. But like Gary said, there’s a lot of great value in the $10-$15 dollar range.

  192. September 12, 2007

Excellent news on the 2007 VCS front – really brought the thunder today! Great idea to make a forum section, the VCS link, as well as adding 5 random vayniacs to the blending (and your even paying for peoples’ tickets!!) Definitely impressed GV, you totally brought the THUNDER!

CONGRATS on the Ellen appearance! She is hilarious (already have it set-up on TIVO).

Like the inexpensive value deals episodes A LOT!

QOTD: 2004 E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone and a 2005 Marquis Philips Shiraz. (both would certainly fall in the “value” range for me)

Great show Gary. I’ve had the A to Z Pinot Noir, but not the Pinot Gris, so good to know that it’s a good value as well.

    QOTD:
2001 Gary Farrell Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County
    N.V. Domaine Chandon Sparkling Red
(Not sure why, but this one exploded all over the place after opening, probably lost a glass worth. It had been in my fridge for at least 6 months sitting very still. Hilarious though.)

QOTD: Well, the fam was in town so they were very kind to bring a Caymus 2005 Cab. Sauv. I wanted to put it away in a dark corner for a few years but they insisted on drinking. Hmmm, silky goodness.

Then last night I had a Rugia vino rosso frizzante from La riva dei frati (cornuda). It wasn’t very good but it did remind me a lot of kir royale which I drank gallons of in Paris.

  206. September 12, 2007

    Matt N.

Great show, always interested in the under 15 bone range. The last two I have had were the 2006 Babich Sauvignon Blanc, which I really enjoyed, and a 2004 The Colonial Estate Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre, a ridiculous fruit bomb but with enough complexity to keep it interesting, so also very enjoyable.

I like this week’s theme of low priced wines. It paid off today with two stellar whites. I’m going to look for the Austrailian.

QOTD: The last two bottles of wine were a fruit-bomb, Layer Cake (Austrailian Shiraz) and a local favorite from Mt. Aukum, a 2003 El Rojo De La Tierra. This is a Rhone style wine with 65% Syrah, 33% Mourvedre and 2% Petite Sirah. Maybe my tastes are changing or maybe the Mt. Aukum is a fruit-bomb, too, because I liked it more. Gary, if you ever have a chance to get something from Mt. Aukum winerey, try it!

  209. September 12, 2007

    Karl B.

QOTD – Two wines that you recommended Gary: Giacomo Grimaldi 2005 Dolcetto d’Alba (very good wine for $13) and the Four Vines Chardonnay (which accompanies mild, white fish very well). Tonight though, I am breaking out a 2004 Chappellet Merlot.

    Karl B.

Interesting that you picked up the cocounut in the Australian white – I had an inexpensive semillon/sauvignon blanc blend (Terra Australis) from Trader Joe’s last night that had a noticeable pina colada aroma too …

QOTD: Terra Australis 2006 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc (Australia), Alma Rosa Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay 2005 (wonderul wine, not too oaky!)

Hi Gary! Love the show. Lately I’m watching it a lot during work… keeps me happy and thinking about wine when I’m tired of the grind. I wish I had Tivo so I could see you on Ellen! I’m going to have to find a way…

Last two wines: Black Box 2005 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon (decent boxed wine with 4 bottles worth for 20 bones!) and Skylark 2006 Pink Belly Mendocino rose (a lovely grenache-syrah rose).

  212. September 12, 2007

Dammit Gary… you still haven’t learned how to say Oregon. And now you even have an Oregon quarterback. BTW, did you see my Ducks beat up on Michigan last weekend? That was beautiful… I do hope Clemens starts. He may make a Jets fan out of me yet… ;-)

QOTD: Last night was the 2000 Bodegas Tintoralba Almansa Crianza (I say 88 points), and a few nights before that the 2005 Boekenhoutskloof The Wolftrap (89 points, steal for the price).

BTW, Thanks for the free shipping!!

Just put in my order for the Vayniac Cab, and totally forgot the sasha code. Oh balls. Probably wouldn’t have worked for that item anyway, I’m guessing. Keeping my fingers crossed for the drawing. Throwing a young dude like me (23) into the blending could make things interesting.

    QOTD: Last two bottles were:
X Winery Sauvignon Blanc – $10 bottle from Lake County. Wasn’t impressed.
Sant Appiano Chianti – Enjoyed quite a bit. Would like to hear your take on it.

Hi Gary! Good show today. The QOTD got me thinking…Have you ever done a show on the excellent negroamaro grape from Puglia? Because my wife and I just had a bottle of 2001 Duca Belisario, which was a 80/20 blend of negroamaro/malvasia nera grapes, and it was just freakin’ excellent. My first experience with these grapes and I was quite impressed. If you haven’t already, please do a show on wines like this because I want more! The second most recent wine I had was a 2005 Chateau des Correges from the Cotes du Rhone. A little skunky. Oh well, they can’t all be winners. Take care!

QOTD: 1855class-I also just tried a Novellum Chard….very good unoaked vin de pays for the price. Too bad Wine Library does not carry it! My other was the Monteviejo Lindaflor Malbec Gary did in August. The alcohol could burn your eyes! Cheers

    Great show.

    QoTD:
Wilson Gunn 2004 Shiraz – Really surprised me. Big fruit but a bit of gaminess and a crisp finish.

I am glad Gary didn’t like the Bogle Pinot Noir. I was never a big fan of it and I thought I was nuts because so many stores and people pushed it at me. It’s confirmed, I am not crazy!

What kind of watches do you wear?

  240. September 12, 2007

    Itriolo

After 8 days of lurking – my first post! I love this video blog!

QOTD: is it last two WHITES or last two WINES? I’ll give you three, just in case.

2002 Francis Tannahill “Alder Ridge” Washington White (100% Roussanne in this vintage): tasty, nutty, supple roussanne. Still tastes young.

2004 Condado de Haza ribera del duero red: opened WAAAYYY to early – years too early. Oak monster.

2005 Spaetrot Klassik: blend of two rare Austrian white grapes, zierfandler and rotgipfler. Exotic, steely, slightly dirty-tasting white. Stone fruits and spice. My favorite of the three wines.

2004 Matthews Claret Columbia Valley, youg but very bordeux esque. Onced it opened up a bit the leather and tar components blended nicely with the elegant fruit.

    Hey Gary,

Whats going on? I posted twice under this comment thread, and both posts were removed. I was trying not to be a Lurker, but I keep getting dumped. I have been downloading your show from iTunes, enjoying every show, and went to post my answer to the QOTD but nothing.

How can I go from being a lurker to being involved?

Gary, congrats in advance on the Ellen appearance. Practice your dance moves now. I hear she likes to dance.

Don’t worry about swallowing your gu (even if it is a little weird). :) My Mom told me it would sit in my stomach forever, but I read online that it’s not really true. http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/chewgum.asp

Last 2 wines I drank: 2007 Kim Crawford Sauv. Blanc, awesome as usual! And before that, a sip of truly crappy wine at a networking event in a hotel. Not even worth trying to remember the name of that turd juice.

Too funny, husband and I happened to go out and buy the Bogle Pinot Noir Monday night and then there it was the next day on here! We loved it, bit drier than I normally go but we let it sit out for a few hours- made it much smoother and fuller, allowed some of the citrus flavor to come out instead of the smokiness i initially noted. Paired with some great gouda and it’s a party. Thanks Gary!

    Gary,

Second comment of the day. On a roll and a new record ;-)

Hooray for the Ellen show! Gotta come up with something about wine and dancing….hummmmmm I know…a Vayniac wine dance. I can’t dance, so don’t know what it would look like, but I’m sure someone in the Vayniacnation could come up with one. :-) )

QOTD: Darioush 2004 Napa Cab (A few more bones for everyday-50, but worth it…YUM) and Imagery 2003 Sonoma Cab Franc (based on your recent Cab Franc show)

Have a great trip to the Ellen show!

Viva value wines! Our ’special occasion’ wines languish in the cellar while we pop a value wine every day or two.

QOTD – 2001 Argyle Brut that was great and a 2004 Foris Muscat Late Harvest that was very disappointing. No flavor just sugar water and chemical aromas.

I opened a bottle of Esk Valley Merlot/Cab Sauv on saturday and only had a glass out of it, I thought it was tight and one dimensional. last night I noticed it neglected sitting on the bench in the kitchen and popped the cork again. This wine was magical, about 4 days after opening it I couldn’t believe how well tasted. I assumed it had something to do with the sulphites managing to preserve the wine ever so slightly, with a slow oxydation. I have to admit it did have a hint of “open 2 or more days” but I kind of like it, the girlfriend loved it too.

Also a New Zealand Deutz Rose Methode from Marlborough – Just delightful, had it at a tasting beside 3 NV french champagnes – PJ, Mumm and Deutz (F). Amazing complexity, quality to price ratio beats french any day

    Mr. Ambassador

    Great show.

Have to vent though – Washington SUCKS! What’s going on here… I logged in to purchase the two cases of wine I had in my shopping cart only to find out that you are no longer shipping to Washington State (As Shakespeare wrote: “Something’s rotten in the state of…”). Still hope Sasha enjoys his special day, even if I can’t get a discount on shipping.

I really enjoyed watching you sample three wines that I’ve recently tasted; I was shouting at the screen when you sampled the Bogle: “come on, back me up – I didn’t like it at all” and sure enough, you gave it a PAZZZZZZZZ. I’ve tried the Stickleback Red and though it was a value but I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as the white. Fortunately all the wines you sampled are available at the local wine shops as I can no longer order through Wine Library (well, I suppose I could get a PO Box somewhere in Oregon).

I’ll still watch all episodes of WLTV though I have the feeling that I’ve just been hit in the gut now that I can’t receive any more Wine Library shipments (must be like your “Gary Is Sad” episode). Is this what it feels like when your NFL team relocates to a new state? When the player whose shirt you’re wearing is suspended for steroid use? When the opposing team’s coaching staff is caught video-taping signals (you know what I’m talkin’ about). Burns me up… To those of you who live in “reciprocity states” and can receive your wine shipments with no troubles, be aware of how lucky you are!

Also have to add that those Lurker Shirts are pretty cool.

Haven’t found any Thundercats for you yet but I’m keeping my eyes peeled.

Thanks again for a great show!

  270. September 13, 2007

    Mr. Ambassador

Oh yeah, can’t leave without answering the QOTD:

While watching the WLTV episode tonight I was sipping Robart Karl (Columbia Valley) Sauvignon Blanc and before that I opened one of my Ash Hollow Cabernet Sauvignons (2005 Walla Walla Valley). Every day (cheap) sippers I had over the last couple days were the Simplicity Red (2004 McLaren Vale, Australia) and Six Prong Red (Columbia Valley, WA).

Nice show, Gary. So, do you think that it easier to get a good bottle of wine under $20 if it’s white than if it’s red?

QOTD: The last two bottles of wine I had were a 2005 Amisfield Pinot Noir (which rocked) and a 1999 Chateau Dauzac (which was still rather young, but quite tasty and surprisingly fruity).

I was curious to hear your input on the Bogle Pinot Noir. I am a fan of Bogle wines, but not the Pinot in question. I was curious to hear there were so many that requested it. Thanks for you very informational input.

Last two wines I drank? Hmm, let’s see. Today was an unusual one. It’s called Man’s Best Blend, a 2004 red blend from Columbia Valley, made by Arbor Crest and sold only at World Market stores. I was inside World Market, saw it, and it looked interesting, so I grabbed a bottle. Not bad. Some pleasant banana and tobacco notes.

The last wine before that was a Columbia Crest Grand Estates 2002 Syrah. Excellent.

Hi Gary, Have just discovered you via Slate column from a few months back and now enjoying your shows.
Am now quaffing the 2006 A to Z pinot gris and find it very smooth! Also with an aftertaste of marshmallow or maybe I’m imagining.
Anyway, keep up the good work! My local wine store (5 minute walk) will undoubtedly benefit!
Don’t hate me but I’ve been a Pats fan for a LONG TIME. :-)
