QOD: Gaglioppo from Calabria! It’s always fun to run across something totally new to you, and this was it. Looked different, smelled different, tasted different and it was all good.

QOTD: When I was little I wouldn’t eat shrimp even though my mom kept telling me to try it. So one day I tried it and then I became like Bubba, eating shrimp left and right and my mom had to limit me. I used to hide the shrimp tails under my plate so she didn’t know how many I ate.

This is my first post. I used to be in the wine retail biz myself.. I discovered this site about a month ago and think that it is GREAT! Ultimately the quality of a wine, any wine, is what you think it is. I might think you’re crazy or right on, but it’s not about what I think or Gary thinks, it’s about what YOU THINK! To Mr. Diallo I say: keep on tasting, thinking, reading, comparing…and above all stick to your guns. That’s wine appreciation!

A short but sweet episode. My new discovery is Moulin Touchais coteaux-du- layon wines (100% chenin blanc, slightly sweet). As a fun fact Moulin Touchais are the only winemakers in the world who give a CENTURY LONG GUARANTEE ON THE LONGEVITY OF THEIR WINES.
    Cheers.

The new thing that I have enjoyed the most is fish tacos haha, I have also tried a Rioja for the first time and I was shocked at how smooth it was. This was a great show I have to say and for that I will share a little story with you.
When I was a little kid (around 10-12) our family moved to a larger house in the same city. One of the nice things about this was that my mom was able to cook more as we had a much better kitchen. Because of this she started to collect cooking magazines, and i can remember as a kid reading “Food and Wine”. In it there are all sorts of articles about different dishes and wines and I out of all of the different issues there was one in particular which stood out. Now I can’t remember the issue number I will get it to you latter, but it was the one on cruse ships and different wines that were served on premier cruses. The thing that stood out from this was an image of a bottle of Penfolds shiraz on which the article focused. For some reason that picture stuck with me and after all these years I finally had my first bottle of Penfolds shriaz and it was great. I shared it with some friends and it actually hadn’t dawned on me just how long I had waited to have that experience, but it was great. I have no idea what the wine was rated or who else liked it but it was great to me, and I feel that I am lucky to have had friends that I was able to share that with. I also feel that if it was not for listening to and the help that all the people here have given me that I would not be able to appreciate wine for myself. It happens too often that people tell you to like this or like that or try this or try that but I know that you will always encourage us to try something different and follow the beat of our own drums. So I know I have said it before but I want to say it again “Thankyou” for being my friend and i hope you have a great weekend.

QOTD-Joie, “A Noble Blend”. In Canada it’s Above $20.00, and if you look at the current currency rates (only 3 cents off the Green Back), you would pay only .60 cents less than we would, and the wine is only available here because it’s produced here. Awsome juice, created by Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn in Okanagan Falls, BC, in the famed Okanagan. Vinified to be reminescent of a Gentil, it’s craxy fruit. When in Vancouver, it can be found in all the good food haunt’s. Get when in Town.

QOTD: Pedro Ximenez, either you love it or you hate it but its definitely worth a try. It’s not going to break the bank either way. Thanks again for the free shipping.

Besides Argentinian Malbecs, shame on me, I recently fell in love with corn-nuts. My girlfriend hates me…

Great point! I’ve recently had a few wines that i’ve gotten on clearance becuase they were at the end of their supposed drinking range. Alot of them still had nice tannins and explosive fruit. Now white wine on the other hand, I try to stay on the 2006’s. I can’t believe you were even thinking about leaning towards a team lead by Kyle Boller! That’s insane! QOTD: Best new thing ever with regards to wine is my discovery of the incredible wine values of Spain and Portugal.

QOTD: Going to college hockey games. Fewer fans makes it more intimate, and it’s a fast, fun game.

oh yeah – another good “new try” (though not my ‘best’, *ahem*) is a Torrontes that I sampled tonight at the local wineshop’s wine tasting. Gimenez Riili (or is it Rilli?), from the homeys in Mendoza. Dry, tangy, no sugar, a zingy little citrus, maybe lime. I am generally NOT a fan of whites (and rarely buy them) but this was so nice, that I bought a bottle of it. My very first Torrontes…..

    Gary,
Love everything about your show, but your Jets will be destroyed this weekend. Clemens against the Ravens’ D? Yikesy! And I will be happy to see Clemens get beat up after last week’s game. I know you see the Jet fan cheers as support for Clemens, but it made me sick to my somach when Pennington had just finished struggling to get off the field and the fans are cheering for the backup. Sickening. Olberman was right.

Gary, me doth protest! Of the 23 bottles I ordered this week, EVERY one was a wine I have never tried before. Not just winery & label, but many of those were grape varieties I’ve never tried. So there. I love to try new things. (In fact, I’m seldom likely to try the same thing twice. Women excepted.)

QOTD: best new try? …..hmmmmm……. First post-divorce girlfriend. Damn. No one will ever measure up to her. *sigh*

My prediction for Sunday’s game? “Pain.” (a la Clubber Lang, in Rocky III) That’s right. Pain. It will hurt the Jets to play it, it will hurt for you to watch it. Did you see Rothlesburger get sacked NINE times last year? And that Bart Scott DRILL to the turf? That’s what you have to look forward to…. So get my order shipped quick, so that you won’t avenge me for your bad mood next week. Caw! Caw! Caw!

Whoa! It looks like you changed the way responses are displayed. I like it!

Regarding my SASHA order, I must say that it was a MIXTURE of old and new things. In fact, I believe that it was mostly new. And how could I pass up that Chinon? I’m astounded that it’s still in stock. I don’t have access to Chinon of ANY kind in NE Nevada.

QOTD: In the world of wine, my most recent “new” favorite is the Font du Vent Cotes du Rhone Villages Notre Passion 2003. I found a good deal on this stuff, and decided to jump, despite the fact that I’d never tried it. I’m glad I did. It’s full of the sour cherry and kalamata olive flavors I like best.

qotd … virginia cab, naked mountain’s raptor red; recently had it served up and, inspite of my bad attitude, I found it a very solid wine for under $20

But, Gary, I DID try new stuff in my order. I swear!!!

QOTD: Today I sampled about 6 white burgundies, 3 red burgundies, and one Chateau Neuf du Pape that started out totally smelling like bandaids, tape, and poopy barnyard. Then after those scents cleared, a hardcore bolt of red Twizzlers came through. The lady next to me looked at me like I was nuts, but I stuck to my guns. And tonight, I’m trying something new with dinner–the Alberto Furque 2005 Tempranillo from Argentina.

QOTD: Pax Rose!!!! Now I’ve had my share of Rose, but this was like Pax’s regular Syrahs with training wheels, absolutely delicious. If anyone can track this down I highly highly recommend it.

QOTD: two surprises, one recent(as in the past 2 months) and one from last year. The more recent one was seeing an 01 Pont De Guestres for $20. I figured, hey, 01 was a pretty solid year for Bordeaux and the wines are a good amount more affordable due to 00 being so big, so why not give this a go, well, I was extremely pleasantly surprised at it. No, this wasn’t neccessarily some big 90+ pt stunner, but, it just left a really nice smile on my face and was just fun to try out a chateau from the pomerol that I had never heard of.

The other surpise was last year, and is one of my favorite surprises. I was just randomly trying oregon pinots and saw an 03 Le Cadeau. Well, I figured, hey, why not give this a flyer even though 03 was a pretty hot vintage for oregon. Well, not only was I surprised at how great it was, I was throughly shocked, so much so that after drinking it I went out and bought a case the next day. I still think back to my first tasting of it and how special it was. It really was an epiphany. Here was this pinot that to me was exactly what Pinot was about, finesse, silk, elegence and wasn’t some of the fruit bombs that you get from california. When you add in the price for it, it was a complete winner. I haven’t had that many burgundies because of how expensive they were, and in a way I’m still searching for an oregon pinot that does to me what the first Le Cadeau did for me. maybe it’ll be a never ending search, but at least I’ll always remember that first time having it

    GV,
Sorry dude, you are in for a long season with the J-E-T-S JetsJetsJets!
How about a shout out for all of us who HAVE tried new wines. I ordered some Proseco after the show the other day. Never had that!
QOTD: Arneis baby. That stuff is absolutely FABULOUS! Probably my favorite white wine, especially for the summer.

PS: Go Panthers!!!! Jake the snake is back!
