I had the Kim Crawford last weekend and entirely disagree with Gary. Good acidity, good structure, maybe a little too much going on in the nose but enough positive complexity in the palate to place it at a higher level. I’ll buy it again.

I love the jet lagged, tell it like it is G.V. Put these prima donnas where they belong.

I enjoyed your rant about the K. Crawford Chard and I completely agree with you. It is one of the major reasons I have gravitated more & more toward Riesling. I can think of an instance that a “butter bomb” is a good food match though – Vichyssoise!!

    Gary,

Excellent show, and I love your honesty. Keep it up buddy.

    QOTD: to the top :-)

I bet Lindemann’s Bin 65 can take that Kim Crawford Chard any day! (and for $5 bucks.) I certainly like Babich, Matua and Shepherd’s Ridge better than their Sauvignon Blanc.

Great Ep GV but let’s take it step by step.
    1. Yea on Virginia wines. Even sent you some. What more can I do? If I need to make an appointment and drive over with a case for a tasting I’ll do it. Let me know.
    2. I’m with you on the prototypical, over-oaked butter-monster chardonnay.
    3. Surprised you took your teaching hat off. I think you normally woulda told folks that Monastrell is Spain’s name for Morvedre.
    4. QOTD: I’m going to help make more wine.

Hey Gary - I thought the eps was still good. Every wine can nnot be good. I find the tasting of different wines very interesting. Its fun to try somthing different and new. Sometimes you find a winner and at times you don’t, but just keep trying.

QOTD - I am going to Tuscany on Thursday for 19 days. I will have to catch up with you when I get back.

Actually, I almost like it better when you slam a wine, so I thought this episode was a great comeback…well, except for the messed up bottle. I think I wouldn’t watch this show if you loved that crappy, overdone style of Chardonnay. I don’t mind that style here and there when I’m in the mood for it, but 91 points? 17 bucks? Geez louize…

QOD: I think right about now I am going to go outside, down the street and finish off my lunch break by getting some coffee.

Congratulations on your Jets victory yesterday. Freakin’ Bears…34-10!?!?!

    See you later,

Glad to see you’re back at home to do new episodes this week! I saw you on Ellen, thanks for putting up the video on facebook! Great show with her- too bad she didn’t get to try some nice terroir!

QOTD: Eventually I’m going to France. But right now I going to the couch to do some homework.

And “Mecrack” really, what’s with all the hate? I think you’ll find GV has plenty of fans out there.

GV, stay away from whites….I don’t drink them unless I’m out of reds and I’m not drunk yet.

QOTD Bed. I just got to work but I’m already thinking of being back home…with a glass of over-rated Cali Cab.

You are soo bicoastal now. I can’t wait for the live Vaynercab barrel tasting show…

Nice runback for a touchdown in Miami. I’m bummed the Skins couldn’t run it in from the one…

It is reassuring to see that even the experts can rate some dogs highly. It also makes me think that bottle variance or barrel variance is a common thing. The best control would be to taste the same bottle at the same time and have everyone’s opinions and impressions submitted in writing for review. I have had bottles of the same wine tasted within a month of each other and was wowed once and not so much the second time… Is it me or the wine? This makes me try it again and again to decide thumbs up or down.

You were tough on Kim, I like his eyeglasses a lot. Is he a one hit wonder with Sauvignon Blanc?

The best finds are wines that haven’t been rated and you went with your gut and purchased them and felt so smart when they were much better than you expected. Of course the odds do work against this happening too often as you have demonstrated many times. I am going to try a Castle Rock Cabernet because I saw you taste their Pinot Noir and I couldn’t find it. Fame by association.

Your montage was funny. At some point you have matured because the early shows have a more cherubic look. Is it the constant wine spitting or the fame that has etched these features? Did they make you up for the Ellen D. show? Tell us what is was like. Limo?

You have single-handedly changed my wine world and I consider you my brother.

Tragic comedy: I added a bottle of that monastrell/petit verdot blend to my WL shopping cart a few days (a week?) ago. Haven’t checked out yet though. Was VERY excited to see it on this episode’s list, then crushed after watching the episode. I’m still interested in trying it because, well, I recently learned that I like monastrell and I’ve looked for more petit verdot wines to try. Eh, one bad bottle won’t stop me from ordering unless there ends up being a multi-bottle problem.

QOTD: Tomorrow? Wherever something catches my interest. (Hooray for vacation days!) The day after? Back to the office. (Boo for 2-3 hour meetings!)

Kim Crawford: I haven’t tried the chardonnay but a couple of my friends have. One of them loves oak (he’s a Toasted Head fan—need I say more?), the other hates it. I’m sure you can guess which one of them raved about the Kim Crawford and which one wanted to scrub his tongue with a brillo pad + bleach. Consequently, I won’t be drinking that chardonnay anytime soon.

Speaking of chardonnay and oak: I’ve been recommending the Four Vines Naked chardonnay left and right. People who’ve tried it and reported back to me have had nothing but good things to say about it. It’s gone over especially well with folks who, like me, blew $30 on the Mer Soleil Silver—which is a good wine and all, but overpriced, especially when compared to the Four Vines. I drank a lot of Naked chardonnay this summer. I’d say I’m 100% for the unoaked chardonnay revolution if I didn’t like the Mer Soleil (not Silver) chardonnay so much. A little oak = good. Toasted Head oak = nasty.

Back to Kim Crawford: I wonder how their pinot noir is? Maybe I’ll go to a local wine shop to pick up a bottle while I’m semi-aimlessly wandering about tomorrow.

Love the rant, Gary. Do you ever get the feeling that when everyone on the planet tells you, “you have to try this…it tastes just like _____!” from the moment you smell it, to the moment you are spitting it out of your mouth, you are thinking “WHAT IN THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING???” It was almost predictable. Of course, I was ready, and I loved it!
