    Top 13!

Looking forward to South African wines. I was there for work last fall, and had an opportunity to try a bunch of different wines, with the exchange rate being a huge help. It was awesome. The John X Merriman has been nice in the past – hopefully it lives up!

Nothing else by Boekenhoutskloof? Especially after raving about the $7 Wolftrap?

Gary, I’m disappointed. I’ve personally gotten their Chocolate Block in NJ, albeit not from you guys. I’m glad you reviewed new terroir, but I’m disappointed that you missed the chance to see other, higher-end, offerings from the maker of one of the best value wines ever on WLTV.

    Hey Gary,

I haven’t tried many South African wines but I’ll probably pick up the 2 you recommended and try them out.

Another terrific show. Guess it’s time to move beyond Goats Do Roam (branding genius}.

QOTD: Steel-cut oats (first love was Frosted Flakes!)

I have been enjoying S. African wines for a couple of years now and it is still easy to find many good values in their wines. I have several pinotages that I especially like and some great chenin blancs.

I’m a new viewer and this is my first comment- and have been watching for about a month. I really like your show.

Tell the people more about the grapes. More education. Do the Vaynernation knows that Chardonnay is made from Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir, Cab Sauv is a clone combo of Cab Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, Vidal is the combo of Ugni Blanc and Rayon d’Or which is a Vitis Lambrusca grape. Maybe the Vayniacs would find it intresting to know some about the difference between the “European” vine, Vitis Vinifera and the “American” vine Vitis Lambrusca and how the to are important to each other. And there is a new law for grapes that are combos between Vinifera and Lambrusca (e.g Vidal).

    QotD : I like granola

Whoahhhhh new intro…..what will be next?
Great episode Gary, I’ll admit this is a region that I have kind of given up on after about 10-12 bottles that did not do it for me…I’ll have to get back in if you think things are on the up and up
QOTD – Gotta be cherrios….simply the best!

    QOTD: Barbara’s Shredded Spoonfuls. Yum.

I love South African syrahs. Little disappointed that you didn’t taste any of these. I got hooked on them on visits to South Africa for work a few years ago. At their best, they are a perfect balance between Cornas/Cote Rotie and Washington/California. Remember th huge South African guy that GV had on WLTV about 10 months ago. He owns Luddite vineyards in South Africa. His wines are beautiful. Chris Williams at Meerlust also makes some beauties. If anyone ever gets the chance to head over there, please do. It’s a beautiful wine country.

Whoa, production value meets WLTV. Nice job, just don’t go all Hollywood on us. What’s next, editing of the videos? Second takes? And when are you releasing the 5 DVD box-set with special bonus DVD that answers burning questions like “Is Gary really pouring that wine on the floor?” and “What happens to the $2-$100+ bottles of wine that Gary uses two glasses of?”

QOTD: I’m not a big cereal eater. I like Bear Naked granola though.

No “addiction” but often have Cheerios with a banana. My favorite would be Cinammon Toast Crunch. If I have an addiction, it is FREE SHIPPING deals…

I’ve been on a huge granola kick lately – made some of my own recently. I tend to go through phases though. I used to really be into Cinnamon Toast Crunch until I started to watch the sugar intake.

    Totte:

Chardonnay is made of Chardonnay. Chardonnay is the offspring of Gouais blanc and an unidentified grape, most likely Pinot noir. Cabernet sauvignon is not a clone but the offspring of C. franc and S. blanc. This means it may be a natural crossing. When you cross two vinifer species the result is a crossing, not a clone. The blending of V. vinifera and V. lambrusca (or V. riparia) to create a new species is called a hybrid.

Good job on the Pinotage birthdate. 1925 per Wikipedia (which we all know never lies…)

And who was it that Kastner zoomed out to capture on the left of the screen?

QOD: Frosted Mini Wheats. Can’t get enough of the little sugar bombs.

Okay Gary, I must address this first:

PALETTE – What artists (people like me) use to pick colors for pretty pictures
PALATE – What food/wine critics use (people like you) use to refer to the sense of taste

Question of the Day: I’ve always been addicted to Corn POPS. It was a treat for me as a kid, but recently I’ve been getting into healthier cereals like Cheerios, Rice Krispies (the plain kind) and Total. All with a sliced banana, of course.

  41. September 26, 2007

    John Farrin

Was hoping for a good Pinotage but ya can’t win em all.

QOTD: Do I have to? Okay, Golden Crisp (formerly Sugar Crisp). I know, I’m damned.

No favorite cereal, but always have a box of Raisin Brand in the house.

A few editions ago Wine Spectator featured south Africa. The article pretty much follows your thinking about the future for their wines. But after you highlighted “The Wolftrap” from Boekenhoutskloof about a year ago, I’ve been convienced about their quality and price.

Great ep! Love the educational eps with the tinge of Vaynerspeak…I’m throwing a “Wines of the World” tasting party soon, so I’ll be sure to get some South African flavor involved…

QOTD: Not addicted per se, but I used to LOVE “Oh’s” cereal, remember that? Also Grape Nuts (but only when microwaved and hot…yum) – and Frosted Flakes bring the thunder too.

I like south african wines- but it would nice to have you showcase the newer wines such as pinot noir and syrah, pinotage seems to becoming less popular.

QOTD: Whole grain irish oats. They take awhile to cook, but worth it. Also, Cap’n Crunch, but you have to let them soak in the milk a little while so they don’t rip up the inside of your mouth.

  64. September 26, 2007

QOTD: Nature’s Path HEMP granola. What can I say? It’s addicting!

I have been trying to drink as many SA wines I could find ever since you reviewed The Wolftrap (which i really really liked). How could you keep your SA QPR reccos. from us? Come on GV, share those $40-50 bottle finds with your devoted Vayniacs!

QOTD: I dont think I have had cereal for breakfast (other than oatmeal) in over a year. Wow, that really caused me to pause and think)

  66. September 26, 2007

    gordoyflaca

About the numbers: ” In 1983 I asked the journalist Sheldon Wasserman not to publish scores for my wines… in which a comparison becomes a divisive numerical term rather than expressing shared human toil. I have not changed my mind: my tiny farm producing 20,000 bottles of wine a year interests only a small number of customer-friends… I think of my hills as an anarchical arena, with no inquisitors or opposing factions, whose inner richness is stimulated by severe, thoughtful critics; I strive for a community that can still express solidarity with whoever has not been so well-rewarded by Mother nature. Wishful thiking? Allow me to dream.”
    -Teobaldi Cappellano

also refer to the recent Eric Asimov post regarding wine and context… to me, the context is so important when it comes to wine… just like people… If you know where a person is coming from, you can understand them better, love them and embrace their flaws…

I really enjoyed the new intro. Great job on that.

On the topic of merlot, it was actually the first type of wine that I ever drank and I totally love it. I’ve never seen Sideways, but just since you talk about it so much, I think I’m going to have to rent it and see what you’re talking about.

QOTD: It’s either honey nut cheerios or honey bunches of oats. I like the honey at breakfast a whole lot.

  80. September 26, 2007

    Tommy Vernieri

QOTD: Definitely not an addiction but I like Life with yogurt clusters. But DT is on the money with Irish Oats (I have steal-cut, I don’t know if that’s the same thing as whole grain), they are delicious.

    QOTD: Frosted Mini Wheats

  88. September 26, 2007

QOTD: I could eat cap’n crunch with crunchberries out of a punch bowl. Absolutely addicting, cannot get full. (Although I saw they are bringing Count Chocula back – I smell T.R.O.U.B.L.E.)

  89. September 26, 2007

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: it used to be Team Flakes, but I haven’t been able to find them in about 5 years. They must’ve discontinued them. They were a stupendous Meritage of Wheat, Corn, Rice, and Oats.

Nowadays, I tend to mix 2-4 different cereals together, never the same blend twice. If I’m in a square mood, I’ll go with Quaker Oatmeal Squares blended with Kashi Autumn Wheat shredded wheat; if I’m in a flake mood it will be Smart Start, Honey Bunches of Oats, and a healthy portion of Giant Granola. With other stuff mixed in, as I experiment with new flakes/squares.

  90. September 26, 2007

WOW, what a timely topic today. I just got home from going to eat at an Ethiopean restaurant, and wouldn’t you know it, I had a glass of South African red wine with dinner. I don’t know the varietal of the wine, but the name caught my attention, “Goats do Rome”. It was not the best effort but name was cool, and seeing my wife roll her eyes at me when I made the oak monster sound at her was also pretty cool too. Anyway great show today.
QOTD- Lucky Charms, been on this kick for about a year now.

  95. September 26, 2007

Arrowood steelcut oatmeal. Only the real deal. If I’m healthy for breakfast, it gives me leeway with wine, ya know?

QOTD: Life cereal. All the way. Even better than Life is Cinnamon Life. That is cereal heaven right there. If I die and go to heaven, my cereal of choice is Cinnamon Life.

I picked up a new wine today. Never tried this type of wine before. It’s a 2005 Galus Costieres Denimes from the Rhone Valley. Super excited about trying it.

Thanks for the episode. You now owe us another one, with the $40 wines that are as good as $100-200 ones.

QOTD: Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Oreos cereal all the way… and the new All-Bran with yogurt clusters when I want to feel like I’m eating well.

  104. September 27, 2007

  106. September 27, 2007

    P-Higgity

QOTD: Frosted Flakes. After they’ve been sitting in milk just a little while, before they’re soggy, when you bite down on them they get stuck on top of your molars all compacted. When you scrape them off they taste like the inside of a Butterfinger. Now that’s a cereal that delivers on the finish.

    fancy new intro!
south african wines are interesting, but don’t seem to be widely distributed in my area.
i once had a bottle of fluer du cape merlot that i hung onto for about a year and a half and when i opened it it smelled and tasted exactly like green bell peppers-nothing more and nothing less. one of the oddest wine experience ive ever had.
qotd-right now im rocking the natures path organic optimum zen. it sounds like it should turn you into a superhero; but its just ok.

    Gary,

Speaking of South African wine, I’d still like to get my hands on some Stormhoek South African “Geek Wine”! You should do an episode of WLTV with Hugh MacLeod. From what I understand, he visits NY city often. You guys could even organize a Geek Dinner which Stormhoek sponsors…

    Website: http://www.stormhoek.com

QOTD: Kellogg’s Apple Jacks and Honey Nut Cheerios

I have had a lot of Pinotage from South Africa AND Zimbabwe. There are some decent ones, though Mukuyu Pinotage from Zimbabwe also is dominated by the oak monster. With the trouble there these days I am not even sure they are still producing.

One of the great things about visiting South Africa is that South African wine is very inexpensive in South Africa. I would highly recommend a vacation in SA wine country. Stellenbosch is incredible place and if you go around September – October time frame you can see the whales in Hermanus. Cape Town itself is the most happening city in Africa.

Heh, the 90+ point wine shopper story might’ve been mine. I wanted to explain to the shopper why he shouldn’t pick wines solely on point merit (while slapping him upside his head) but the wine consultant had already whisked him and his girlfriend to another aisle of the store, and I figured it’d be creepy-stalkerish of me to pursue and follow them around the store just so I could explain the error of ways and all.

Anyway: Good episode. I’ve had only 2 South African wines, I think. One was off a restaurant’s wine list and the other was at a friend’s dinner party. Maybe I’ll give South Africa another shot sometime this year.

QOTD: Product 19. I eat it dry, by the handful. Love that stuff. Dunno why.

But if we’re talkin’ addictive breakfast food, then the answer is steel-cut oats. I put all kinds of stuff in my steel-cut oatmeal. My favorite concoctions are (1) lots of ginger, juice + pulp of half a lemon, honey, & sometimes pure mango syrup and (2) a little kosher salt, black pepper, red bell peppers, sauteed carrot slices, extra virgin olive oil, and sometimes a crumble of cheese (usually toscanello). Oatmeal is one of the most versatile foods on the planet. A little oatmeal as a side dish for steak is tasty.

Back to in-a-box cereal: There are days when my palate regresses to elementary school and craves sugarbombs. Rice Krispies Treats cereal didn’t exist when I was a kid, but it’s great (and so bad for my teeth) on those sugarbomb days. Other days, I crave Alpha-Bits. And then, some days I just want a bowl of Rice Chex with peach or nectarine cubes. The yogurt-covered Cheerio varieties make nice dry snacks; I keep a box at the office, and my coworkers laugh at me because hey, it’s the crazy lady with cereal in her cabinet and she doesn’t even eat it with milk, oh my!

Ellen: I finally got to see both episodes very early yesterday morning. (Insomnia’s good for something after all.) That producer segment was hilarious. Good times, man.

And: The editor in me wants to correct your chalkboard but I’m sure some other commenter has already done it. The editor side of me constantly fights with the writer side of me, in case you’re wondering. Maybe that’s why I ramble so much. Har-dee-har.

I don’t think it is fair to blame “sideways” for the merlot bad rap. i was working at a restaurant with a good wine list and when i person would sit at the bar and ask for a merlot, it was the code word for ” i don’t know anything about wine, or just some red wine that is dry” i think there are a lot of people that had a lot of merlots without any personality. today when you said it did not taste merlot, that is a shame. merlot when it is good is so charming. it can be like pinot in where it has the characteristics of the land. in gravel soil, it can taste like a norhtern rhone, in clay, it can taste silky with notes of tobacco.
i like the new intro, quite pro.

QOTD: musili. when i was a youngen, fruity pebbles made my morning. hated sugar smacks. corn pops were good too. i like the crunchy stuff now with some fresh fruit.

QOTD: So glad you asked!! When I was a kid, it was Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Rice Krispies Treats. All the way. Now that stuff is way too sugary for me, but now I do love oat bran flakes or any of those cereals with multi-grain flakes and “clusters” of some kind… kind of an ambiguous answer, but there it is: a balance between healthy and only slightly sweetened.

QOTD: I’m in Japan so it’s gotta be this salmon flavored soy bean…naw, I love this dried fruit granola cereal they have here. Top notch. And if you want some vegetable, salad, chewing on greens wine for a very very good price (about $9) you must seek out Chateau Labourdette. I had the 2003 yesterday and finished it tonight and I must say: close your eyes, put it in your mouth and you’ll swear your eating a fresh greens salad with just a touch of fruit vinegarette dressing without the vinegar taste. Not very balanced, a little harsh and short on the finish but I’ve seldom tasted more vegetal or bug sprayee a wine.

Hallelujah for your comments on points, GV. There’s nothing wrong with wines being awarded points, stars or anything else — you just can’t follow critics blindly and expect to be happy all the time. The important thing to keep in mind is that the critics tend to be consistent about their likes and dislikes, so you need to keep track of how you, personally rate wines against those critics. If you discover that you’re not liking the merlots that a critic is scoring 90 and above, then you know not to buy what that critic likes. And the reverse is true, too: If you find yourself agreeing with a certain critic, stick with him or her. Also, you have to listen to their descriptions of the wines. You don’t just go see every movie Roger Ebert gives thumbs-up to — you listen to what he says about them, and make your decision from there.

I haven’t had too many SA wines, molderbosch sauvignon blanc and Graham Beck Pinno (pinnotage), which is very unusual and I like with grilled meat and even pizza. QOTD: As a kid it was Frosted Flakes. Now it’s Corn Flakes with Half & Half (light cream).

I like wine history so thanks for the Pinotage lesson. Further explanation on the name: The Cinsault grape is also known as Hermitage. Pino (from Pinot Noir) + tage (Hermitage) = Pinotage.

You gave a pass on the Seidelberg because of the oak monster. I’ve never had a Pinotage. Should I go with the Kanonkop 2004 to show me what a Pinotage should be?

Gary does an episode on South African reds and I’m leaving for France tonight to watch the USA play South Africa in the Rugby World Cup… Coincidence? I doubt it.

Regarding the Rustenberg, have a bottle in my cellar right now and I’m very excited to open it, although I have to admit that for myself and amongst the people I know who follow South African wine, the most respected winery right now is Boekenhoutskloof. Their Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are some of the best wines I’ve ever had. Anywhere.

I’m totally hooked on Kashi Autumn Wheat. Allow me to quote their website:

“Abundantly Delicious Organic Whole Wheat Biscuits With A Kiss Of Natural Sweetness

Made from wholesome wheat interlaced with just the right amount of organic sweetener, our bite size biscuits will satisfy your desire for a tasty, all natural, filling breakfast. We start with whole organic wheat berries then steam, shred and weave them. When baked, the sweetener in the center makes the biscuits rise, creating a light, puffy texture and enhancing the toasty, whole grain taste.”

I wonder if this sounds like any wines you might know?

Gary – Maybe you could do an episode on wines inspired by cereals or something?

    -J

    To: Rick “the model” M

Decanting, in the old days served three purposes: to help air out some of the sulfur odors in wines and to help a wine open up. Additionally, slow and careful decanting sepratated the wine from loose sediment in a ong-cellared bottle.

Today, there is significantly less sulfites in wine, so the main reasons to decant are to help the wine open up and to separate it from any sediment.

How long do you decant? Well that is something that differs for each wine (some say each bottle). Basically you taste the wine and see how it evolves. Do its aromas and flavors change and blossom?

Some wines respond to this others do not. Some take a long time to open up and others experience a precipitous decline in their bouquet.

Somebody mentioned the Wolftrap? (Sorry — new viewer here.) IMHO, that stuff tasted seriously nasty. Tire fire time — total burning rubber. But then, I’m trusting my palate.

I’ve been pleased with a Pinotage we have at work — Warwick, I think the 2004? We had it on the by-the-glass list and I don’t always pay complete attention to vintage when I’m working. :-)

Can you address what exactly has changed with the Washington State liquor laws over the last month which no longer allows you to ship to this destination? I still enjoy watching WLTV but I’m really frustrated that I can no longer receive any Wine Library shipments…

QOTD – My three favorites, one of which is always in the cupboard: Golden Grahams, Cracklin Oat Bran and Captain Crunch with Crunchberries.

I liked the sound of the Rustenberg, Cab Franc is a fave too. Shame about the Pinotage, I still have high hopes for that grape and, like you, respect S.A. winemaking, they have more to offer.

QOTD – Cereal or Serial? If Cereal then none, I don’t eat breakfast (although Muesli is OK). If Serial then Heroes is good.

Great episode. More on Pinotage in the future.

I don’t eat cereal. I usually have meat for breakfast. It reminds me I am on top of the food chain.

QOTD: I am in a very small minority, I know, but I really don’t like cereal.

In a pinch, though, Cookie Crisp makes a great dessert.

Pinotage makes an interesting style of wine. There are many hybrid varietals in America. I would be interested in watching an American-hybrid episode.

Gary I don’t know why i discovered this only today cause you did this review a couple of months ago. But I’m sure glad you did because South African wine is amazing. I have travelled a lot and tasted a lot and I still find South African wines are the highest quality and best value for mony. But then I’m biased considering I just adore South Africa.

Enjoyed your SA program. I am a big fan of Rustenberg. The Merriman X is nice and sophisticated and interestingly different from year to year. Their Five Soldiers Chardonnay is my favorite white in the world. Splurge on it and Peter Barlow. Though Barlow is a lay down wine that will improve for many years to come.

Gotta check out some South African wines!

Yo. I went to Stellenbosch back in 1998, which is a cute little town. I went to a winery called…Rust en Vrede? It was terrific, better than some of the others I went to there. But, it was cool going around there. Beautiful wine country, very dramatic.

Never had a wine from South Africa but aside from over-oaked wines they sound very interesting and something I need to check out down the line ( theres that promise of mine once again). QOTD: Lucky charms. Classic old school. I love those damn marshmellows. Ive tried buying the cheap generic kind and its just no good. Its got to be the real deal Lucky Charms. But if not Lucky Charms, Cracklin Oat Bran. Both of those I could eat handfuls of out of the box.

Another good episode with an excellent topic. I need to try slightly pricier wines from South Africa. The cheap stuff has been awful.

QOTD: I like cereal, and I eat plenty of it. But I think if I never had another bowl of cereal in my life, I wouldn’t care. It just isn’t addicting to me.
