Have found South African wines very hit or miss, some have been awful. Not sure a couple years later that they have gotten any better. QOTD-Honeynut Chex http://www.winelx.com

    To Lindsay:

The Wolftrap tastes exactly like that to me too. I have tried to get Gary to review it, but no luck. I am always confused when I see the scores and reviews for that wine. I guess what Gary says is true, “trust your palette”.

QOTD: someone mentioned QPR for cereal?… GV Bran Flakes (I eat this almost everyday) is about $1.40 a big box from WalMart. It’s not fake or a sugar bomb… just bran in flake shapes… nothing fancy 😉

  • Cocoa Pebbles. It’s my Chocolate cereal flavored crack cocaine.
That last couple spoon-fulls in the chocolate-crack-milk…….mmmmmmmm!
Not to be confused with fake-ass coco-krispies.

P.S.- I never lost faith in the Mer-lott grape. If you can find it: Willis-Hall 2003 Merlot (Columbia Valley AVA) It’s a terrific (and award-winning) example.

I haven’t tried any South African wines. I’m currently on a roll with New Zealand Pinot Noirs and Spanish reds. Regarding the Spanish reds, Jay Miller’s ratings have hit the nail on the head with every one I tried.

QOTD: A mix of spoon size Shredded Wheat, Basic 4, Wheat or Multi-Bran Chex and All Bran cereals with Silk brand vanilla soy milk.

Good show gary, dig the value in South Africa. Check out De Trafford. Will have to pick up a pinotage next, and see whats crackin’. I love trying new varietals.

  • GV and CM – As a former theatre lighting dude – I’m digging the lighting this episode. Very dramatic – keep it up! Oh – and thanks for tasting some SA wines…

Always love those South Africa wine shows. Kudos! QOTD: Cereal? Well, I am NOT a big cereal fan. I do oatmeal (good for that cholesterol problem, you know). However, my wife is a cereal connoisseur and her favorite is Cheerios.

    GVNC:

Just got back from two weeks in Portugal. Drank a lot of vinho de casa tinto. It was awesome!
Great wine. Less than 10 euros a bottle at restaurants. Gotta love that. QOTD: I’m a yogurt man.

  • Mr. Ambassador

Interesting variety of South African wines which were sampled today. Can you address what exactly has changed with the Washington State liquor laws over the last month which no longer allows you to ship to this destination? I still enjoy watching WLTV but I’m really frustrated that I can no longer receive any Wine Library shipments…

QOTD – My three favorites, one of which is always in the cupboard: Golden Grahams, Cracklin Oat Bran and Captain Crunch with Crunchberries.

I liked the sound of the Rustenberg, Cab Franc is a fave too. Shame about the Pinotage, I still have high hopes for that grape and, like you, respect S.A. winemaking, they have more to offer.

QOTD – Cereal or Serial? If Cereal then none, I don’t eat breakfast (although Muesli is OK). If Serial then Heroes is good.

  • Great episode. More on Pinotage in the future.

I don’t eat cereal. I usually have meat for breakfast. It reminds me I am on top of the food chain.
