Hey Gary I am going to have to disagree with you on the Arnoux C.D.V. I thought this wine was very enjoyable and evolved into something special after being open for a few hours showing a wonderful strawberry shortcake component, just lovely vanilla, red and dark fruits with that great earthiness. I think I had a great bottle and you had a bad.

Welcome back, Gary. Does dinner count as a wine tasting? If so, my next wine tasting will be in about half an hour. We’re having chicken curry and I figure to bring up either a Gewurztraminer or a Viognier.

    MW_DM,IA

My questions to you: On the OneLastThingToSay page(I couldn’t see the whole video, you mighta covered this) there was the wristband form. I already filled it out about a month ago, do I need to do it again or do I just trust the system? Oh, and I forgot to call the number (waited until end of episode and followed link) was that important?

QOTD: Usually on Friday nights, local friends watch old off-air cartoons on DVD to lighten mood.

QOTD: Well of course I will be having wine this week, but our next tasting will be our regular Friday night at the WIne Cellar here in Richmond, followed that same night by a dessert and wine pairing even at a local restaurant. HELLZ YEAH!!

    SEe ya

    KyleLikesTies

Good show, as usual; too bad none of the three wines ended up being an 95-pointer, but the Beaujolais looks interesting. I’m not a big fan of sour wine, but for USD6, it’s at least worth a go.

QoTD: A local specialty grocery that has a decent wine room is hosting a tasting this Saturday; how can anyone say “no” to a few free sniffy sniffs / tastes?! I’m going to try to convince a few fellow GSC’ers to come along.

  47. October 8, 2007

    Dominus

Brew-yee, Brew-yeeeeeee, no “l”s but one has to love “pancake covered paper and worm guts” love it.

Actually, i just stopped and bought a 6 bones Chard from Australia (Kilda) on my way home and surprisingly, i won’t dump it down the drain!

Again, I understand your pain with Jets. There are soooo many horrendous teams out their and I wonder if “parity” is a good thing. If the Jets wins ONE game, please, please, beat the Redskins. They are talking Super Bowl in this town. Unbelievable.

QOTD: I will be attending a wine tasting with some real “pros” (a wine pro/chef friend and fellow foodie from NM who I have yet to meet but email now and then) at the end of this month. I will be totally outclassed but it will be so much fun. Maybe I can use the “worm guts” description?

Go Colts and the Tribe tonight and last but not least, the Pats are cheaters.

    Cheers!

QOTD: This Saturday. “Wines of the World” BYOB at my house. No California, Washington, Oregon or any “American” wine allowed. (We all tend to be California-centric here). I think it’s going to be a blast.

  68. October 8, 2007

Hey GV, I think the Niteline directors cut was your best regular TV appearence yet. You knocked it out of the park!

FWIW, being a Broncos fan isn’t so hot either – worse home loss ever yesterday (41-3 ) to the Chargers! Aaaaargh !!!!!
….. at least we have the Rockies !

QOTD – Tomorrow nite – here at the house – going to break out a new Oregon Pinot out for the 1st time with some pork shish-ka-bobs. Can hardly wait !

Oh.My.God. Your video string is absolutely HILARIOUS, but do not EVER nerd it up in such an “elegant” manner again or you’ll have to move to Wine Spectator where that tree-up-the-ass (no, scratch that, not tree, FOREST) attitude is acceptable, haha. :-)

Your jump the shark video is the funniest thing I’ve watched in a long time, I laughed so hard, I scared the crap out of my cat, sitting on the beck of my chair. Scratched the hell out of my neck trying to run away.

Anyway… You just keep doing your thing the way you do and screw what anyone else says. You are one of the most fun people to watch, and hun, if you ever start charging for your videos, lessons, or information, I’ll be right there, credit card in hand, because you are THAT great and the amount of knowledge, teaching, insight, and info you have given me is worth more to me than anything you could ever want to charge.

    Gary, I adore you!

QOTD: Next organized “wine tasting” – our monthly group in late October or early November.
Next taste of wine – a 2002 Kenwood Yalupa Shiraz (rough nose, silky smooth body, a bit too green on the finish) one second after I hit the “add comment” button below.

Man! The Jets can’t give my beloved Redskins a little help? Could you try to help us out when you play the Cowboys and the Eagles? Of course the ‘Skins will throttle the Jets’ sorry asses.

Gotta love the Cru Bojos! Keep the faith buddy!

QOTD: Probably in Laurel MD.? Why?

QOTD: Might go to the Ottawa wine festival (Nov. 2)
    Cheers

Sometimes watching your show kills me. Trying to find a Beaujolais at $12 here is hard, nevermind $6. While you’re changing [sorry...WE're changing] the wine world, can we change that too?

QOTD: Wine tasting is in my dining room Saturday mid-day. Got a wine scored 98 by RP in the lineup. Looking forward to it.

QOTD: I had a wine class tonight and we went through 15 Italian wines. Next monday would be my next one I guess.

I’m bummed that I’m missing the super tasting, but my son is home from college and my wife would be pissed if I took off to NJ to the super tasting since we need to bring him back to school tomorrow.

GARY— I am relatively new to view your videos, and I enjoy them.
I am a ‘competitor’ of yours ( I own 2 of the ‘Canal’s’ discount liquor stores’ in South Jersey). I, too, am lamenting the poor play of my favorite football team(Eagles), but wanted to drop you a note. First of all, you are ENTERTAINING! I don’t always agree with your ratings, but you clearly have the passion that excites people, and if you can get people to drink more wine, what a better world we’ll have. I’m especially thrilled that you focus on inexpensive wines, as we have to get novices interested in decent wines at good entry level prices. After they get into wine, they’ll eventually ’stretch their legs’ and try wines of better quality and complexity. Hopefully, I’ll run into you in person at one of the tastings. Continued success,

    Dr. Bob Maro

Gary, I freakin laughed my butt off going to all your sites. Hey, just so you know, you ARE appreciated but use out here! Keep it up, you are awesome, inspired our group of friends to try something new and we love it!

QOD: Actually, having my own little wine tasting right now as i’m typing this, Marquis Philips 2005 Vintage Sarah’s Blend- pretty good, nice heavy finish, oaky infused in with old, sun-ripened cherry. Just tried the Cavit Collection Pinot Noir 2006- it SUCKS! mildew toes and rotten grass. Going to the Charleston Wine tasting in November, catered by a five-course meal to boot! Keep the thunder Gary! We miss it!

QOTD: Next wine tasting is when I can scrape together ten bucks to buy a bottle from a grocery store.

Funny story: tonight someone brought over a bottle of zinfandel to my apartment. After I had a sip or two and they asked me if I liked it. Without thinking I said that I thought it tasted quite smoky, with the smell of cooking fat in the background, like someone dropped some on a campfire log.

Right after I finished the sentence I laughed to myself. I’ve been watching the show so much your way of describing wines has rubbed off on me. I hadn’t realized it until now though.

Great to have you back.QOTD Ft. Thomas Ky. Liqour Direct every Friday and Sat. free wine tastings. Have not mised one in a long time have probably tried 300 to 400 wines there since i’ve started going great. Thanks Gary and WLTV crew.

GARY- the facebook video and nightline spot were each fantastic!! I’m so glad I’ve been on board with this project for so long and get to enjoy seeing it get more and more (much deserved) attention each day! Cheers, and keep up the flow!

QOTD: Well, I recently found a quality local wine shop here in LA after my move from the east coast, and was able to get 5 or 6 wines of relative quality for just above the price of the large production, one-dimensional, overly fruit-forward California wines that dominate the shelves at all of the grocery stores out here. SO, my next tasting will be here in my apartment with a few friends of my mixed bag of Spanish, French, and Italian reds (even though all of them were still under $10 bucks!). I’ve popped 2 so far, and I can’t tell you how happy I am with the quality after picking them, consulting with the wine shop owner, and knowing that they taste every wine under $50 before they make a purchase.

Here’s to the new Kellen Clemens era, may it Start soon. So sorry about the Jets. I grew up in chicago so I am still a bears fan. Have to say it was nice to see we beat GB this week.

The Nightline piece was top notch! I thought your answer, ” it’s not about wine or business, it’s about life…” really showed class. Thanks for stepping outside the box. I’m glad to be a (small) partner in changing the wine world. Bottle by bottle. Friend by friend.

QOTD: NOt sure, but if we try a new sparkler tonight that’ll be like a tasting. right? Hey what kind of sparkling wine goes with…just kidding.

QOTD: Usually head to Liquor Square in Syracuse friday or saturday each week sicne they do free tastings. Other than that, my wine club meets on the 19th at Lakeland Winery near Syracuse. Don’t know if I’m going to make it though since I’m moving to a bigger apartment at the end of the month and will probably be packing.

Thanks for giving the under $7 wines a try – I’m on a tight budget and there’s plenty of under $10 wines out there, but it’s hard to weed the gold out from amidst the crap. Thanks Gary! Maybe next time will be better. Just one more reason why scores are misleading!

Good episode, Gary. So sorry about the Jets. Down with number 10!

QOTD: At my apartment next Saturday night. My parents are going to be in town for the first time in several months, so that will be fun. Along with a few friends as well, we’ll be tasting a couple of whites and a couple of reds from $10 – $50 or so – should be fun. I’m especially looking forward to the 2003 Vinoce Mt. Vedeer Red.

QOTD: Since I am watching this on Tuesday morning, I am cheating on the QOTD…”my next wine tasting is”…was last night at the West Orange Manor Super Tasting on Monday, Oct 8th… It was great meeting you last night and we had a great time!

My friends thought I was nuts when I was telling them that the wine tasted like grass, green apple jolly ranchers, dirt, vegetables, etc.

I agree with your comments about Brouilly. If people haven’t tried good cru beau, they need to…unless they are big oak and fruit aussie freaks.

    Gary,

I have a strong suspicion that Terra Andina that you drank is not the same wine that is sold here in Brazil. Over here, it is a really well made inexpensive carmenere (no “i” there. not Janis, not carmeniere either! :P ). I’ve been in contact with some of those wines designed for a specific market and it can be a totally different juice. Did you ever commented on the differences in wines brands (same label) for different markets? Being such a taboo topic I believe it would be perfect conversation on WLTV.

    Sorry about the Jets, mate!

I like episodes like this because they remind me to keep looking for value. I have been leary of trying wines that cost less than $10, thinking they can’t be good. Since seeing shows like this I have tried them. Even though I don’t often find a great wine, I do learn about what I like and don’t like. Thanks, Gary, for constantly challenging us to not get stuck in a rut!

QOTD: Sadly, I don’t have a wine tasting planned. I used to go at least every weekend, but with my son’s high school football games conflicting, I am taking a break. I wouldn’t want to miss a single game, so it’s not a big sacrifice. This is the school’s second year and they are 2&2. Go Pride!

Good show. I been afraid of Beaujolais b/c of the carbonic maceration and baby plastic pool/banana smell I tend to get! It was not until someone gave me a glass from Brouilly (blind) that I totally could appreciate the gamay grape. QOTD: Thursday @ my WSET class-or 17th @ our WineMeUp neighborhood wineclub. QOTD: Met some friends for wine Sunday and they want to do a wine party this weekend -so we suggested everyone bring a bottle with a brown bag and do some blind tasting.

Just went to one last week at Metro9 in Natick MA. It was a Foppiano vineyard tasting. One cool thing we were able to do was taste the Petite Sirah In like 10 different years. From 1986 to 2004. Pretty cool. The 1993 was the best.

GV you did something I do at all tastings I go to, which I find very useful: Retaste the first wine I liked at the end , after sometimes 20 or 25 wines to see if the taste and my palate has held true. I suggest the technique to all I meet.

Finally delurking here, Gary! I can’t say where my next tasting is, I’ll tell you about the last one (last weekend). We live in Berkeley, CA, so it’s easy to get out there, and we were spending the weekend in Healdsburg (Russian River/Dry Creek area of Sonoma, for the non-locals). But we got a head start, spending the night in Petaluma, and heading up to Philo for some tasting. Stopped on the way at Siduri/Novy in their tasting room/warehouse in Santa Rosa. (Someone’s gotta tell their pourer to pour first, then talk!). After the drive north, we went just a couple of places–Esterlina (atop an unmarked dirt road, 1.9 miles off the highway) and Husch. The next day, down close to where we were staying, went to old favorites Porter Creek and Rochioli, and first time in the new tasting room at Moshin (with a really, really fabulous rosé, of all things!). Then Sunday, the best for last: J. They only taste in a food pairing, always a bubbly (sometimes 2), and 2-3 others. Pricey ($25/pop), but well worth it–here’s the deal, though: club members are free. 2 bottles , 5x/year, but we “save” $50 each time, and more if we bring friends, who are also free. Makes for an amazing first or last stop of the day! In fact, besides being last this time, they’ll probably be first next time, they’s just that damn good.

Next wine tasting is today at Chateau Montelena, followed by Caymus, followed by Robert Biale (killer zins). Yes we are in Napa, bound for your neck of the woods and NYC on Saturday, more tasting there (or rather eating and drinking!!). Excited about that… going to Veritas, BLT Steak, Porter House etc. Come join us!

    Mr. Ambassador

I’m always shopping for a good value, though it’s becoming harder to find a great “everyday” wine which can both bring something interesting to the table and fall under ten-bones. The last several successful values I’ve found have all been white wines. Do you think that white “values” are more predominant than reds? We tried a blind tasting with a mix of many different price-points and the “Pinebrook Cellars, Napa” California Pinot Grigio scored better than many of the higher-priced Pinot Gris and Grigios sampled alongside. Another reason blind-tastings are fun!

QOTD – My next wine-tasting is at the restaurant in which I work. We have wine tasting parties (a pot-luck dinner for staff in which we pick a different region, variety or wine theme) once a month! A great way to learn about wine and food pairings and sample a great variety of wines with friends.

Gary, so glad you gave the 2004 Arnoux Cotes Du Ventoux a pass. I had it a month ago and it was one of the foulest wines I have had in a long time. I got a iron finish on it. Really disgusting. I was totally perplexed by the 89 point wine spectator score. QOTD: my house!

I just found your site and LOVE it. My friends and I have been trying to expand our very limited and uninformed palates. I think you will be a get source for us all.

QOTD: My next wine tasting will be next weekend at my monthly Movies and Wine night. Since I am a big dork, our theme is Vampires and Vino. Vampire flicks to watch and each person brings a bottle of red wine to taste. (Each month I have a different wine theme, either a region or a vintage or some such thing.) Heck, maybe we will plan to watch a few of your videos as part of our movie viewing! Entertaining and educational!
