    Hello Gary Vay———————————ner——————————————chuck,
Love your show however, I’ll now confess, ’til now I’ve just been a lurker :( But, hey! This show #331, ripped my lurker-nose-bleed-seats binoculars out of my hands and thrusted my fat a$$ down on the 1st row at the 50 yard line of the Super Bowl of the wine-world AKA: THE THUNDER SHOW, right where I belong, where the REAL action is!! My former favorite episode was the palate training episode(#148), But now it’s #331!!! Keep up the good work G-Vay, no more “lurker” for me – i’ve just been DRAWN IN!!

Favorite wine Irreverente 2004 from Portugal…also Crios – Rose of Malbec…very yummy…and for the whites – drum roll…any Prosecco. I order this more than anything.

If you have a chance to do the Irreverente review…I’ll be the first to watch!

Gary, wow, those supertastings really jack you up.(in a good way)You were bringing it NY/NJ style. This trio of wines were all new to me which is always fun. Bordeaux is always getting dissed as too pricey and poor quality second tier wines but I love them. ( all 5,000 chateaus)I am travelling through NJ to RI this weekend and will try to make it by the store and buy a mixed case of some of the wines you said brought the thunder that I haven’t found locally. Someone told me today that the Supreme Court ruled last year that if a shipper has a license to ship alchohol that the states cannot interfere. Some California vineyards will ship to Maryland and others say they can’t right on their websites.

I totally agree that there are very nice Rose’s out there from the Languedoc/Roussillon/Provence area that are dry and quaff-worthy and food friendly. We all just get stuck in a rut and Rose is close to blush which is to the left of quiche….One of my customers who has an impressive cellar was in Provence this Summer and having dinner outside and the host poured an inexpensive local Rose and everyone was floored by the quality and wanted to know what it was etc. Since you can make Rose from any red grape you choose a lot of styles are possible. The price is attractive too. One of my best Rose experiences was at a Greek restaurant where I was grazing on Feta cheese , Calamita olives and Taramosalata ( whipped fish roe) and pita paired with Rodytis Rose. It was perfection.

Save me a bottle or two of the ‘04 St. Emilion please.

If there is a time to drink some dessert wine then Thanksgiving is the time. Your suggestion is a home run IMO.

Someday it would be cool to get Parker in the same room and duke it out blind with your palate vs. his. I must say that I tend to agree with him most of the time but no one wants to live in a wine world Oligarchy.

I really enjoyed it when you were among the stacks of cases with the names of some of the world’s best surrounding you.

Since you have been travelling quite a lot lately bring us something back that you discovered and relate something that was unique because you know we’re interested.

QOD: I thoroughly enjoyed a ‘99 Margaux Pavillon Rouge, Trefethen ‘02 Cabernet Sauvignon and an inexpensive ‘05 Tempranillo from Alberto Furque, Argentina.

    Go Skins!

it takes a special kind of wine critic to compare a wine to someone he went to 8th grade with.

    QOTD-
the first three bottles of wine I’ve actually consciously bought legally, as opposed to just buying crappy mass-produced Australian stuff I would buy in the spring (pre-21= Alice White Chard, Yellow Tail, you know the names…)

The Caymus Conundrum 2005- the wine that made me realize wine was something worth learning
Beringer 2004 Private Reserve Chardonnay- the first over 90 point wine I ever had and realized that wine could be truly great. was absolutely fantastic with a cigar.
2005 La Rocas- first GV-recommended wine. couldn’t have been happier.

QOTD: No awesome wines for a while. I was loving some homemade wine in Italy. I was drinking the colombia crest 2004 merlot at 4$/bottle for a while (great parties!). I was liking the BV brand wine 2005 with dinner for a while. My favorite is whatever expensive wine I buy for my Dad as a treat and then he shares it with me:).

Loved the show. Keep up the good work, I’ve been watching solid since ~May now.

I still plan to get my photo in with the wristband…my bad. I wear it to the bar and then forget my camera or visa-versa.

    Himmmmm
QOTD: I have learned over the past few months that I am really liking the sweeter wines. My favorite three in the past 60 days are, BV’s Muscat de Beaulieu, Duck Walk Vineyards 05 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer Aphrodite and finally (which I drank last night and was surprised to see it on the show today) La Chapelle De La Negly 06. I think I am turning in to a winnnnnoooooo at times. What fun….. Thanks for the show, GREAT

Hmmmmmmm, kind of a toughie. Been lucky enough to try a few mature vintages to add a few bins to our wine list. Winners for me recently:

1/ Robert Jasmin Cote Rotie 1990 (shame we won’t see the name anymore, rest in peace)
2/ Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 1997 (anything for this vintage should be amazing, but this stood out)
3/ Ch Pichon Lalande 1990 (tried again last week after 2 years since the last time, still blows me away, love this wine)

Fair enough these might not be cheap but when you get them free as samples they offer great
    value!!! ;-)
More realistic: on a recent trip to NZ loved the Brookfeilds ‘02 Syrah from Hawkes Bay, and a wicked painting on the bottle. The Rusden Cab Sauv from Barrosa is up there as a favorite at the mo and the Cline “ancient vines” Mouvedre, go the Rhone Rangers and nice and easy for you Yanks to get hold of.

A-Rod a shoe-in for MVP but out the playoffs already, makes me sad. Better find some more wines to cheer me up.

    C-Lo:

As long as you use some of the next wine to rinse out the residue of the previous wine you should be OK. This is more a practical/pragmatic issue.

There is something called an ISO wine tasting glass designed for tasting multiple wines.

While there is much to be said for the effect of various size bowls on the expression of a wine’s aromas, their shapes have a more nuanced and arguable effect on the falvor of wine.

Consilience makes a good Zin Port but its fom Mendocino fruit. Although they try to focus on Rhone varieties, Brett Escalera, their wine maker (formerly of Fess Parker wines) is really skilled with with Zinfandel as a dry table wine. Too bad its not a bigger player in the line up.

    Taylor

I’ve only had three wines, but the best out of them was the Innocent Bystander 2004. I loved it! It was also my first wine, so that probably skews things.

  22. October 11, 2007

    MD

My favorites from the last month…nothing too special, but they have earned the “MD thinks you don’t suck” award.

    1) Apex Chardonnay 2005 – just discovered it this month. Awesome quality for 15-ish bones (case price). Drinks like a $50 Chablis, in my opinion.

    2) Michel Sarrazin Givry “Champs Lalot” 2005 – Cherry, lavender, and acacia nose…light, but great structure and medium length. This was paired with a duck and sweet potato stew, and I thought my head was going to explode due to the high amount of awesomeness in this pairing.

    3) Charles Joguet Chinon Les Petites Roches – funky barnyard, fertilizer, and vegetable flavors. It completely hit the spot with the stinky cheese we were having that night.

    Washington 101

3 best wines tasted recently: (Ok really 5)
2004 Alexandria Nicole Destiny, Quarry Butte & Merlot – These are all extremely extracted but really well balanced wines.
2002 Zefina Sangiovese – Huge explosive fruit flavor, ripe tannins, smooth
2005 Darby Syrah – White pepper like I’ve never been able to detect in a wine before.
