    QOTD:

    1) 2000 Graticciaia (Vallone) – This is chocolate covered blueberries on the nose all the way. More of the same on the palate with beautiful mouthfeel and structure; a big wine. Please find this and stock it in your store…please!

    2) El Nido (Clio) 2004 – Another monster, much more new world but tasty as hell. Paired beautifully with some stinky French cheeses.

    3) Some 2001 Tempranillo from Rioja – man I wish I remembered the name of this one, but it was off the charts for the price. Rich and complex, long finish, A+!

Good episode. Nice to see some excitement for once. Especially after the lackluster $7 wines.
QOTD – 2000 Lynch Bages (or any vintage of LB) – cedar and lead pencils with black fruits. Yum.
2004 Roar Santa Lucia Syrah. Lots going on.
    2004 Kistler Sonoma Pinot.
Three wines I have had recently that rocked my boat.

Have had the pink wines and while I have confidence in my manhood to drink the pink, I have not found any one that I would put as a favorite.

oooh, i agree with Dr Frank’s Rkatsiteli, also recently experieced Lamoreux Landing Dry Riesling and Silver Springs’ Tri-Dition (i’m way too geographically close to the Finger Lakes). Silver Springs also has a wine video blog that i just noticed today.

Lurker here, love the show and I’m loving wine more all the time:

    Current favs-

Cheap wine: 2005 La Vieille Ferme Côtes du Ventoux 7 bones at the local wine shop

Expensive wine: My favorite local winery Koenig 2003 Cuvee Alden 50 US dollars, which I can’t afford, but was tasting at Koenig this weekend (again) and talked the wife into buying a bottle

Sparkler: In memory of the late Dr. Manz whom owned a winery in Spokane, WA, he recently passed away and made the first sparkler I really liked: Mountain Dome Brut

Thanks for a great show Gary!

  46. October 10, 2007

QOTD: 1. Jackson Triggs 2005 Ice Wine (Can you do another ice wine show???); 2. Benton Lane 2005 Pinot Noir; 3. Baron Lafite Rothschild Pauillac Reserve Speciale(2003).

  47. October 10, 2007

    Saftig

It never fails when I watch the show that I picture sweet, patient Mrs. Vaynerchuk, Gary’s Mom, and how she must have struggled to keep up with young Gary, the Human Triple Espresso.
QOTD: We were stationed in Germany off and on for 10 years, so German Rieslings major big in my world, a nice German Sekt also lovely and for some reason I always have a couple bottles of Concannon Petite Syrah about. I’m a simple girl, who needs yet another wine refrigerator.

  48. October 10, 2007

    Dominus

NOW THAT IS A THUNDER SHOW!!!!! Wow, I will be showing this at my dinner party this Saturday night since it was sooooo exciting and informative. I just hope everything isn’t sold out tonight so I can showcase these wines on Sat.

    QOTD
    My Tremendous Trio
    1. 1988 Dominus (doesn’t matter which vintage actually)
    2. 1985 Opus One
    3. Any good German Riesling or Oregon Pinot (Cristom comes to mind)

    Cheers!

    Pastafari Pirate

Great episode, GaryV! Love to see that exUUUUUberance you had goin’ on! (make sure you pronounce every ‘u’.)

QOTD: My favorite 3 wines I’ve had recently…..
    1) ‘Mocali’ Brunello di Montalcino (can’t remember the year, but thinking it might have been 2001). WOW. I was stunned. (Way out of my price range; this was a treat from my brother-in-law.)
    2) Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel – I’d had very little exposure to Zins previously, but this wine single-handedly may have gotten me started on a new Zinfandel obsession. Now, I want to try every last Zin out there, and primitivos too.
    3) Castano Hecula – Perhaps my favorite casual (price-point) drinking wine. I am in love. No, I am in lust. OMG, Hecula, where have you been all my life? Marry me!

  50. October 10, 2007

    canadian-kid

favorite 3 wines right now…i just recently drank these and i was blown away…

    chenrys

Great show, Gary! I want to find that last one, for sure. Sounds like something I would love.

QOTD: Frogtown Cellars’ Testimony, we opened this yesterday and I had forgotten how much I like it and a local vinyard. OVZ from Lodi – Oakridge Winery – an excellent Zin and Santa Ema Reserve Merlot from Chile – very chocolatey (don’t know how to spell that).

  52. October 10, 2007

    E

Way to hold off on the 2004 Bordeaux love until I had a chance to grab a few. Attaboy.

You know what sounds interesting for Thanksgiving, is that orange ten year old Lopez de Heredia rose. Got some? Anyone know where I can find some of that for an amputation-free price in downtown Chicago?

Speaking of which, on my last roadtrip I picked up some Monbazillac … I was thinking it was a southern dessert wine but I guess it’s more a white Bordeaux thing.

    Recent highlights:

2005 St Cosme Deux Albion Cotes du Rhone
    2004 Librandi Ciro Rosso (!)
2001 Baron de Ley Rioja (incredible after a few days in the fridge)
2000 Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot (surprisingly quiet & restrained, and it’s f—ing merlot!)
2006 Ruffino Orvieto (surprisingly good sub-$10 white)

  53. October 10, 2007

    Dr T from N. Carolina

From Hurricane Katrina through just this past month, my ‘table wine’ drinking was almost entirely nice, but not really memorable. The two exceptions were dessert wines saved, which I enjoyed last winter and early spring:

Warre’s 1976 Colheita (Reserve Tawny), bottled in 1996, a really lovely tawny
    Royal Tokaji 1993 Tokaji (6 Put.s)

    “T”

QOTD: 2001 Guigal Gigondas (Southern Rhone), 2004 Gargiulo Aprile Super Oakville Blend (Napa Valley), 1997 Vina Albali Gran Reserva (Valdepenas, Spain)

The drinking age should be lowered to 18. I’m 15 and therefore I need to wait 6 more years until I can legally drink wine, despite the fact that my aunt and uncle own a small winery in Healdsburg, Sonoma County…not that the law is stopping me from anything.

BTW, my parents really likes the 2005 Fleur Des Pins Graves!!!!!

  74. October 10, 2007

    CindyW

Very nice episode, GV. I enjoyed hearing about your faves. Haven’t posted in a while, but I thought I’d add my favorites to the list. I followed your format, and have one dessert, one red, one white (sorry, no rose). These are wines that I like enough to have purchased several bottles.

White: 1990 Poniatowski Vouvray Aigle Blanc (fairly easy to find online, about $20)
Red: 2004 Montes Alpha M (all bazooka joe bubblegum and blueberries on the nose, mmmmm…. could sniffy-sniff this all night long, way more expensive than my usual but I don’t care, $76)
Dessert: 2004 Tittarelli Dulce Natural (amazing pears, finish of hot cinnamon,$19)

Posting this so I can read what others have posted. :)

  76. October 10, 2007

    The Fanjestic

My Favorite Bottle is always the next one….but these would be my top 3 of recent -

    3. Four Vines Naked Chardonnay 2005

  77. October 10, 2007

2004 or 2005 Greg Norman Limestone Coast Shiraz

    Senor Sangria

    Hey Gary,

It was great to meet you on Tuesday at the tasting. Now I know why you spit when you taste wine. If you don’t you’d have a nasty headache the next day with the amount of wine you taste each day. I have to tell you I woke up with a pretty rough headache today after the tasting. Though we had a great wine.

QOTD: I don’t have a favorites wine list but i’ll share with you a discovery from the tasting yesterday. Urbans Riesling 2006 (http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=34069) was a great wine at a FANTASTIC price. You talk about smelling wines. This one brings the THUNDER. Its not something you can drink all day long but it is truly enjoyable.

    Cheers,
    - Rick

Got into a long discussion about this with my husband (BlankJeff), so I thought I’d add his favorites.

white: 2001 Helfrich Gewarztraminer Steinklotz Alsace Grand Cru (like fresh apple juice, with some notes of grass)
red: 2003 Stina’s Cellars Cabernet Franc (for price point and non-put-downable drinking, from a little-known Washington winemaker)
desert: 2000 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos

QOTD: Three wines of late that I have really enjoyed are

    1) Marziano Abonna 2000 Barbaresco
    2) Edmunds’ St. John 2004 Rocks and Gravel. Possibly the best/most interesting wine for $15 that I have had in a long time.
    3) I am planning to open a Torres 1989 Gran Coronas Mas La Plana on my upcoming birthday. I have had this wine before, within the last year, and have 5 bottles of it left and I am completely into it. There’s nothing really special about 1989 for me, these bottles were just an opportunity I came across and couldn’t resist.

QOTD: Current faves are Burgans Albarino, Robert Mondavi Napa Cab, and Franciscan Magnificat. Haven’t drunk enough of them to be swift enough to pick vintages.

Mr. GreenHead is a Panther now, huh? That guy can really hold a clipboard, you know. At least the cats didn’t go looking for Chris Weinke to come back, which I thought they might do. You could then have heard the sound of one franchise’s fan base imploding. Kinda like the Jets right now. Ooh, that was mean wasn’t it? See, I’m not really that nice after all…

Those three sound delicious, I may have to include one or all in the surprise I’m planning for my two lucky friends.

QOTD: My three favorites are all made by friends locally. They probably wouldn’t be “high-point” wines but they’re my favorites because they’re made with love for the rest of us. If you’re interested I could try and convince one to slap a label on one of the bottles…

Lurker here, really been enjoying wines by Ste. Chappelle out of the new Idaho appelation. Great Rose and a dynamite Cab Franc Ice wine, along with the Reisling Ice Wine. They also have a soft red wine and soft Chenin Blanc, amazing. Didn’t know souther Idaho was so good. Also had a Melbac from Argentina, very nice. Otherwise I am a big Benton-Lane Pinot fan. Love the Oregon Coast.

I can’t think of a third…oh yeah, I tried that Altesino from a few months back and loved it. Good recommendation.

Good to see you again, Gary! Please, allow me to expound…Yesterday I tried to watch, and for some reason, couldn’t get the video going, so I was MAJOR bummed. Anyway, I am always entertained and enthused by your show. Great wines today, I will seek them out. That’s pretty much for this month – bound to change almost imminently.

    The Celebrator

Can’t wait to try some of the Fleur Des Pins – I’ve started seeking out a lot of the wines you’ve been tasting and must say, you’ve been spot on.

    QOTD:
    - 2004 Sequoia Grove Cabernet (GV: You were right, this wine went to charm school. I told a friend of mine who is a master sommelier and has his own wine store that the SG was better than 04 Don Melchor, he laughed at me… and then he tried it, and I laughed at him.)
    - 2005 Numanthia Termes – not as good as the Numanthia Numanthia, but for $20 it’s good enough to buy two – one to drink and the other to bathe with.
    - 2004 Hacienda Monasterio Ribera del Duero – if I had a show like you, GV, this would be the wine I would tell people “this is why you watch my show.”

Thank you, Gary, for changing my wine world.

    Social Brian

Gary, Social Brian here, formerly TagWorld Brian. :) Great to see you getting back to old school WLTV sort of. Maybe you’re able to get out the other energies on youtube, FB, Ellen, Conan, Nightline, Time, etc. And now you’re able to focus 100% on the wine again. (And the Nightline piece was excellent. Excellent. I’m glad you won’t get pigeonholed in the mainstream media as the “guy who eats dirt and sucks stones.” You got to explain the WLTV philosophy, and it was great to hear. And the WineLibrary operation grosses $60M a year? No wonder you spit D’Yquem. :) Seriously though, it’s been a great ride over the past year.

QOTD: I had a wonderful Nebbiolo last week from Cascina Adelaid…This producer has only been making wine since 2000 but is already putting out 90-94 point rated barolo wines. The Nebbiolo I had was from Langhe, just a great mix of old world and new world…can’t go wrong with this one…so I bought a case! here is a link to a write up I did on it…I liked it so much I made it the “wine of the month” on WINE16.COM

    http://www.wine16.com/id10.html

P.S ….did you give a point score on the last wine from Graves? I bought A six pack…thanks for the heads up bro!

  140. October 11, 2007

    Chris

Pink wines: always taste ‘em, hardly ever buy ‘em. As in, maybe (maaybe!) once a year. Last weekend I had one at Moshin (Russian River, Sonoma) that I snapped up some of. Great stuff! Here’s the deal, though: the rose on their own label is listed on their site as sold out…but what we had was a side label, maybe only in the tasting room (and now I don’t remember the name), maybe the winemaker’s side work. But it was just fabulous, maybe the best CA rose I’ve had–100% Pinot, and it shows. $12-13 or so, and well worth it!

  141. October 11, 2007

    Oregon Jim

    Gary,

Went to a tasting today for Zerba Cellars in Walla Walla. Just fabulous Syrah in ‘03, but they had a bad freeze in ‘04 and are trying to recover. It’s coming along, but not there yet. I told Mark the winemaker about your show. He said he would check it out.

‘05 Capitelo Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. $33 and a great qpr. New winemaker originally from NZ.
‘04 Archery Summit Arcus Estate Pinot Noir. $68 and really good, but qpr is so-so. The ‘03 got 95 WS.
‘03 Benziger Family Vinyards Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma. $16 great value! Nice with a steak. I think these are the folks who sold Glen Ellen after making 11 jillion gallons of white Zin for the world. Made a tidy sum and now their kids just lay back and make nice wines.

Poor Chris. He’s frustrated by your failure to score the 2005 Fleur Des Pins Graves. You can’t get soooo excited about your favorites that you forget to score them (yeah, we know, trust your own palate). QOTD: I have been REALLY enjoying South African Pinotages. Found a really great QPR at the store for only $7.99 a bottle – - Nederberg Pinotage. Really enjoying it, especially for the price.

QOTD: I always talk about my modest budget, so here are my 2 recent favorite wines purchased for 9.99 OR LESS: 2005 Chateau Hauts-Cabroles Bordeaux, 2006 Chateau Beauregard Coteaux Du Languedoc, and one above the $10 pricepoint: La Cuvee Mythique (Syrah, Grenache, Muvedre, Carignan) from Languedoc (2004 or 2005). Cheers.

    John Witherspoon (J DUB)

    Good show dawg!

Jazzed to try all 3 of those puppies.

QOTD: Since I have been all over the place lately and under the school of not drinking the same wines all the time I will list the last 3 wines I have had which all rocked and I would drink again.

Imagery 2004 Sunny Slope Vineyard Merlot, Valserrano 2001 Rioja Reserva, and 2005 Vietti Barbera d’Asti.

Keep rockin’ the episodes. Megan and I really wished we could have made it to the super tasting. If we lived in NJ it would have been more realistic.

QOTD: Top 3 wines? No such thing, just a long list of I’d-definitely-drink-that-agains. The most frequently purchased is dodgy too, as it’s too heavily weighted by the crappy local off-licence and supermarket where I fall into buying at the last minute. So here’s a list that’s not very meaningful:

    – Sean Thackery Sirius Petit Syrah $70ish (try and find it when I’m in CA)
    – Chateau Meaume Bordeaux Superieur 12 (think we’re drinking 2003 these days)
    – Wither Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 15 (2006, I’d say)

Again,as always, excellent show G!I can feel the force of vaynernation.

    2. Castello del Poggio Dolcetto (Gary, you were right, i had a bad dolcetto, but this one rocked my socks and kicks butt with pasta),
    3. Jackson-Triggs Late Harvest Vidal… yum!

Gary, thanks so much for a great episode! THIS is why i love WLTV… not only did you recommend three wines that sound delish, but two of them I can actually afford! You’re the best Gary! Spasibo!

great show (i’m catching up on episodes this week while i take care of my dad) and i whole-heartedly agree with rose for our upcoming holiday and i love that right bank (like you do, you do know plminer and i attended an amazing CB & Ausone tasting in LA 2 weeks ago?) and of course $7 Sauternes-like wines! BTW, isn’t Sauternes IN Graves?

QotD: i’ll go with 3 recent bottles that stand out in my memory including the 2005 Etude Rose of Pinot Noir, the 1990 Cheval Blanc and the 2005 Brogan Cellars “My Father’s Vineyard” Pinot Noir i just had @ Stella’s in NOLA.

    Great Episode-

    1) Rosso Del Conte 2002 Tasca d’Almerita – from Southern Italy, made from indigenous varietals, fantastic
    2) Domaine des Lises 2005 Equis Crozes Hermitage – the son of Alain Graillot, making silly good wines for great prices, a true rising star
    3) Bodegas Riojanas Vina Albiuna Rioja 2001 – tastes like old school Bordeaux

Thanks for another great show, Gary. Unfortunately, the Fleur des Pins is sold out at Wine Library. I will search for the other two.

QOTD: 2005 Sea Smoke Southing. Had it with wild salmon and butternut squash risotto. Terrific!
2000 Ch. de Cruzeau. It’s drinking well now. A relative bargain.
2003 Treana white. Really tasty. 2004 is available now. Good QPR.

My QOTD: How many WTV viewers imagine swishing the wines with you? (I find that I do.)

  165. October 11, 2007

    G. Tweeze

GV, Keeping the show freshy fresh…I like it. Nice to learn what wines you consider the “new hotness”, as I like to say (you can use that if I get a shoutout). QOTD: Kenwood 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, Vivieros 2005 Cab Franc, and Root 1 2005 Cab. Changing direction for a second, I can’t figure why, but it seems like negativity is creeping into your world, which for me, is hard to imagine. I’ve been watching since July, and honestly, I love everything about the show. It’s a great 10-20 minute break from work, I learn a ton, I’ve started building my pallete, I’ve thrown a couple wine parties, and I tell everyone I know about the show. Life is good. But I got the impression after following your rants from site to site the other day that there are people out there who are trying to bring you down with their cynasism and negativity. As I said, I can’t figure why. How someone can look at what you’re doing and have something bad to say? All I can say is brush that dirt off your shoulder and keep doing what you do. There are plenty of people that truly enjoy and appreciate this show.

  166. October 11, 2007

Gary, new to the site and really new to wine. I love it though. We have a small group here in Austin, and have wine night once a week. But mostly store brands. Reading all these posts I feel very inexperienced. But can’t wait to try some of the wines you’ve suggested.
So with that here are my limited knowledge faves I’ve had recently
    Stag’s Leap 2004 Merlot
Estancia Meritage (not sure of the vintage)
2005 Centennial Vineyards Bong Bong Savignion Blanc

Hey so I’m from Tx, gonna have to disagree w/your Thanksgiving game prediction! :-)
This site is fun, I will be visiting daily!

    2 – Chateau des Charmes Gewurztraminer 2006

WoW! Great show, GV! I’ve had a lot to comment about lately, but my 2 cents worth kept ending up in your spam box. The MottMan fixed it for me, so I’m back in business!

I did try to comment on Tuesday’s QOD: I think sometimes that the kindest deeds I’ve sometimes done have been simply keeping my mouth shut. I tend to be blatantly honest and sometimes people don’t want honest; they want to hear what they want to hear. So, in order to avoid hurting someone, I shut up! I guess that’s a “back door” good deed.

    Loved your enthusiasm today!

Hey Gary…I guess I fall into the category of the “once-in-a-whilers” as far as posting goes. Any way…3 of my favorite wines (and I’m not going to include wines at tastings, rather wines that I actually have bought more than once and that I’m happy with pretty much for any vintage):

Bandol Rose, Domaine Tempier (I’m not just saying that because you had a rose on the show, I love them). Any of the Burgundies produced by Jean Grivot have always been good to me and I always love a good Tawney Port, any producer, I’ve not had one I don’t like.

That’s me in a nutshell, of course there are tons of different wine that I adore though. OK…take care man.

    GO BEARS!!!!

    1) Hoegaarden (pronounced who-gar-den) a Belgian White Beer. That with a slice of yellow lemon (not squeezed or anything just let is float in there).

    2) Samuel Adams Honey Porter. Gotta say its one of those awesome beers that just won’t let me down.

    3) Warsteirner Oktoberfest. Grab it now while you can cause it won’t be here for long.

My 3 wines of the moment… Well, honestly, still haven’t made up my mind on a favorite wine out there, but I’m still lovin’ the Tocai Friulano along with other dry whites. So when I found this wine, it combined pretty much everything I ever wanted into one bottle: Tocai Friulano, Pinot Bianco and Riesling.

The 2006 Ronco del Gelso Blanco – Latimis, from Friuli Isonzo

#$@%-ing beautiful. My 3 wines of the moment, shoved into one bottle. I’d be amazed if you’ve tried it before Señor Gary. If you have, you know the awesomeness the bouquet has to offer on this wine. It’s a $25 wine, and for what you get, it’s damn worth it.

Great job as usual. I’m feeling your pain in the NFL this season as a Falcons fan. Can we get the Birds and the Jets to square off in a bout of the crappiest NFL teams/starting QBs? QOTD: How about the three wines from the super tasting I absolutely loved and am going to buy up. Thats much more interesting .
    1. Yves Cuilleron Saint Joseph Blanc “Lombard” 06 (simply amazing. I’m going to search out his condrieu’s. I don’t see how they could actually be better)
    2. Demeter Tokaji Furmint “V” Vareschilo (who knew a dry Tokaji existed, much less could be this good!”

QOTD: Favorite wines that I have more of: Ridge Montebello (1999 and 2000), we actually got tired of this at a wine dinner – 3 vintages served; too much of a good thing for us.
2003 Smith and Hook Grand Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Cabernet Sauvignon – lots of fruit,
2006 Black Pig Albarino – Gary will have to tell us more about his involvement with it. Very different, refreshing white. I like the frizzante.
I think this counts as a good deed: I didn’t complain that much when my modem went down for 2 days. Not sure my husband would agree.

Hey Gary, I’m still here and I Love the episode like always. QOTD: My three wines are.

    1. EOS Chardonnay its a good inexpensive wine.

    2. Sterling Cab. or Merlot ( older vintages like 1994 and up.)

    3. Bordeaux like (Chateau beausejour Becot 1988) and some other Bordeaux.
That is what I am drinking right now. and their good.

Steller episode. Interesting that you went with the Rose.

Question for you. When are you going to talk more about the Vayniac 2007 Napa Cab ordeal?

    Aaron J

I had an awful Sangiovese last night, a wine which I normally wouldn’t try. It was a WA state 2002 vintage by, well I won’t mention the producer, but it had to do with a Fox. Anyway, it was only $11 so it wasn’t a total loss. I decided to down the whole bottle anyway. Naturally I awoke with a headache. But then I moseyed on over to WLTV and it made me glad that I’m now drinking a wider variety wines. I love this show Gary! Keep on inspiring.

    C-Lo

Question for you: why do you always use the same glass even when switching from a rose to a red to a dessert wine? Does it really matter what glass you’re tasting out of? As far as the QotD, I’m a poor, poor graduate student in Indiana so the wines I usually rock are cheap and I’d be embarrassed to admit to you what I drink. However, my two favorites right now are 1. 2004 Cline Cool Climate Syrah and 2. Consilience Zinfandel Port out of Santa Barbara. Word.

3 best wines tasted recently: (Ok really 5)
2004 Alexandria Nicole Destiny, Quarry Butte & Merlot – These are all extremely extracted but really well balanced wines.
2002 Zefina Sangiovese – Huge explosive fruit flavor, ripe tannins, smooth
2005 Darby Syrah – White pepper like I’ve never been able to detect in a wine before.

  215. October 11, 2007

    MD

My favorites from the last month…nothing too special, but they have earned the “MD thinks you don’t suck” award.

    1) Apex Chardonnay 2005 – just discovered it this month. Awesome quality for 15-ish bones (case price). Drinks like a $50 Chablis, in my opinion.

    2) Michel Sarrazin Givry “Champs Lalot” 2005 – Cherry, lavender, and acacia nose…light, but great structure and medium length. This was paired with a duck and sweet potato stew, and I thought my head was going to explode due to the high amount of awesomeness in this pairing.

    3) Charles Joguet Chinon Les Petites Roches – funky barnyard, fertilizer, and vegetable flavors. It completely hit the spot with the stinky cheese we were having that night.

  216. October 11, 2007

    Taylor

I’ve only had three wines, but the best out of them was the Innocent Bystander 2004. I loved it! It was also my first wine, so that probably skews things.

  217. October 11, 2007

    Arthur

    C-Lo:

As long as you use some of the next wine to rinse out the residue of the previous wine you should be OK. This is more a practical/pragmatic issue.

There is something called an ISO wine tasting glass designed for tasting multiple wines.

While there is much to be said for the effect of various size bowls on the expression of a wine’s aromas, their shapes have a more nuanced and arguable effect on the falvor of wine.

Consilience makes a good Zin Port but its fom Mendocino fruit. Although they try to focus on Rhone varieties, Brett Escalera, their wine maker (formerly of Fess Parker wines) is really skilled with with Zinfandel as a dry table wine. Too bad its not a bigger player in the line up.

  218. October 11, 2007

    christhegreek

Hmmmmmmm, kind of a toughie. Been lucky enough to try a few mature vintages to add a few bins to our wine list. Winners for me recently:

1/ Robert Jasmin Cote Rotie 1990 (shame we won’t see the name anymore, rest in peace)
2/ Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 1997 (anything for this vintage should be amazing, but this stood out)
3/ Ch Pichon Lalande 1990 (tried again last week after 2 years since the last time, still blows me away, love this wine)

Fair enough these might not be cheap but when you get them free as samples they offer great
    value!!! ;-)
More realistic: on a recent trip to NZ loved the Brookfeilds ‘02 Syrah from Hawkes Bay, and a wicked painting on the bottle. The Rusden Cab Sauv from Barrosa is up there as a favorite at the mo and the Cline “ancient vines” Mouvedre, go the Rhone Rangers and nice and easy for you Yanks to get hold of.

A-Rod a shoe-in for MVP but out the playoffs already, makes me sad. Better find some more wines to cheer me up.

QOTD: I have learned over the past few months that I am really liking the sweeter wines. My favorite three in the past 60 days are, BV’s Muscat de Beaulieu, Duck Walk Vineyards 05 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer Aphrodite and finally (which I drank last night and was surprised to see it on the show today) La Chapelle De La Negly 06. I think I am turning in to a winnnnnoooooo at times. What fun….. Thanks for the show, GREAT

    B$

QOTD: No awesome wines for a while. I was loving some homemade wine in Italy. I was drinking the colombia crest 2004 merlot at 4$/bottle for a while (great parties!). I was liking the BV brand wine 2005 with dinner for a while. My favorite is whatever expensive wine I buy for my Dad as a treat and then he shares it with me:).

Loved the show. Keep up the good work, I’ve been watching solid since ~May now.

it takes a special kind of wine critic to compare a wine to someone he went to 8th grade with.

    QOTD-
the first three bottles of wine I’ve actually consciously bought legally, as opposed to just buying crappy mass-produced Australian stuff I would buy in the spring (pre-21= Alice White Chard, Yellow Tail, you know the names…)

The Caymus Conundrum 2005- the wine that made me realize wine was something worth learning
Beringer 2004 Private Reserve Chardonnay- the first over 90 point wine I ever had and realized that wine could be truly great. was absolutely fantastic with a cigar.
2005 La Rocas- first GV-recommended wine. couldn’t have been happier.

Wines that deliver the thunder and I choose on special occasions:

    1. Aquilon 02…….. my baby, the monster
    2. Chateau ducru Beaucallou 1996……Outstanding and unforgettable bouquet experience
    3. Banfi Poggio All’Oro Riserva 1993…. took me by surprise, never expected so much quality on this baby
    4. Lewis Cellar Cab or syra… any year … Wonder how this former car racer does it without owning a vinyard.
    5. And last my favorite dessert Chateau suduiraut 01…..an explosion on the nose a seamless balance

Gary, wow, those supertastings really jack you up.(in a good way)You were bringing it NY/NJ style. This trio of wines were all new to me which is always fun. Bordeaux is always getting dissed as too pricey and poor quality second tier wines but I love them. ( all 5,000 chateaus)I am travelling through NJ to RI this weekend and will try to make it by the store and buy a mixed case of some of the wines you said brought the thunder that I haven’t found locally. Someone told me today that the Supreme Court ruled last year that if a shipper has a license to ship alchohol that the states cannot interfere. Some California vineyards will ship to Maryland and others say they can’t right on their websites.

I totally agree that there are very nice Rose’s out there from the Languedoc/Roussillon/Provence area that are dry and quaff-worthy and food friendly. We all just get stuck in a rut and Rose is close to blush which is to the left of quiche….One of my customers who has an impressive cellar was in Provence this Summer and having dinner outside and the host poured an inexpensive local Rose and everyone was floored by the quality and wanted to know what it was etc. Since you can make Rose from any red grape you choose a lot of styles are possible. The price is attractive too. One of my best Rose experiences was at a Greek restaurant where I was grazing on Feta cheese , Calamita olives and Taramosalata ( whipped fish roe) and pita paired with Rodytis Rose. It was perfection.

Save me a bottle or two of the ‘04 St. Emilion please.

If there is a time to drink some dessert wine then Thanksgiving is the time. Your suggestion is a home run IMO.

Someday it would be cool to get Parker in the same room and duke it out blind with your palate vs. his. I must say that I tend to agree with him most of the time but no one wants to live in a wine world Oligarchy.

I really enjoyed it when you were among the stacks of cases with the names of some of the world’s best surrounding you.

Since you have been travelling quite a lot lately bring us something back that you discovered and relate something that was unique because you know we’re interested.

QOD: I thoroughly enjoyed a ‘99 Margaux Pavillon Rouge, Trefethen ‘02 Cabernet Sauvignon and an inexpensive ‘05 Tempranillo from Alberto Furque, Argentina.

    Go Skins!

    Hello Gary Vay———————————ner——————————————chuck,
Love your show however, I’ll now confess, ’til now I’ve just been a lurker :( But, hey! This show #331, ripped my lurker-nose-bleed-seats binoculars out of my hands and thrusted my fat a$$ down on the 1st row at the 50 yard line of the Super Bowl of the wine-world AKA: THE THUNDER SHOW, right where I belong, where the REAL action is!! My former favorite episode was the palate training episode(#148), But now it’s #331!!! Keep up the good work G-Vay, no more “lurker” for me – i’ve just been DRAWN IN!!

It’s sad for me to say, but I’ve had a lot of crappy wines lately. I really like the Ravenswood Zinfandel, but I had that kind of a while ago now.

I’m currently in the market for better wine shops, so I hope my new discoveries work out. I’ll be making a trip next weekend to NH so maybe I’ll find something out of the ordinary there.

As an answer to the question of the day, my one, not three, but my favorite wine is, a bit embarrasing. It’s really cheap (which may add to it’s cred as my favorite), but I can always find it, and afford it no matter how cheap it is. It’s the 2006 Louis Jadot BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES. That’s the wine I really like. Sure, officially it’s cheap crap, but it treats me well.

    Hey Gary

QOTD: Samuels Gorge Grenache 2005 – tiny McLaren Vale producer run by a hospital, enthusiastic and nutty bloke. Visiting Samuels Gorge was the highlight (along with Dalwinnie and below) of the six different wine regions I recently visited when back in Australia. A trip to Samuels Gorge perhaps even brings more thunder than Wine Library TV.

Balgownie Estate Reds: Awesome, age-worthy central Victorian reds from the established but small wine region of Bendigo. Buying them in Australia they are fantastic value and offer some quality drinking, different from the usual stuff that Australia gets labelled as producing.

    Cheers

It was a really good show today GV! I was interested to see your picks (and quite happy to see that they were all from France…way to bring the thunder France!)

QOTD: For a high end wine (over $90) I would have to say, Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.
For an under $15 bottle I would say 2005 Cartlidge & Browne Pinot Noir.

QOTD: BioFach 2007 Japan, first Organic Wine Pavilion in it’s history. SERIOUS THUNDER.
    Three favorite of the show:
Biohof Pratcsh Baron: smells like spicy eggnog, very good Blauer Portugieser!!! Ever heard of that grape?

Domeco D Jaranta Rioja 200? (sorry my notes from the expo are chicken scratch) think it’s a 2004 or 5 or 6

Muster, from Asteria (Austria Slovenia border) Sauvignon Blanc that smells like paprika, very interesting, very solid and good.

SO many good wines, over 60 producers showing over 200 wines. Can you say palate fatigue for two days straight???!!!

QOTD – I am drinking a wines from all over the world. I get mixed cases from local wine shops and ask for suggestions on good value wines. Recently they have tended to be from Spain and South America.

    2. Casisano Colombaio Brunello di Montalcino 2001
    3. Fattoria La Ripa Chianti Classico Riserva 2000

I’m going to venture outside of Italy tonight; your Chateauneuf du Pape episode has me craving some Rhone.

    Hi,

New to the show, thank you for doing this, Gary !!!

    Recent favorites:

2003 Blackstone Sonoma County Merlot — after drinking a small glass with dinner nearly every day from this bottle, and refridgerating it, it actually tasted even better over a week later. I was thus very fortunate to acquire nearly a case of this at $3 / bottle !! and that I can sit on these for at least another 4-5 years !!!

2003 Grgich Cabernet Sauvignon — one of my favorite wines tasted last night at a huge wine tasting, particularly after my pallet was rather shot when I finally made my way to it.

2004 Chalone Estate-bottled Pinot Noir — another that is young and fine, thus sitting on several bottles of it for 3-4 years.

2004 Belle Glos Cark & Telephone Pinot Noir — actually, although I have a few bottles of this, I have not tasted this since last year’s huge wine tasting. It was my favorite wine at that event.

2002 Ferrari-Carano Cabernet Sauvignon — one of the first wines that really got me into wine. Had another bottle recently, and very glad to be sitting on a few more. Same goes with the merlot and Siena.

2004 Livio Felluga Pinot Grigio — I only had one bottle in storage, and sort of wished I sat on it for a few more years, as it too developed over a week, and very nicely at that !

    QOTD? Lurker Style? You Ask?

    Ok…Domaine Richaud 2003 Les Estrambords

I have about 176 bones into this wine.

    I taste it..I love..try it again..I hate it.

Try again and find myself in the middle.

    What do I do?

I cannot find ratings on it…in English.

Who can I turn too? You GV?

Can you decipher this wine for me? or for us?

I know I am not the only one sniffy sniffing 2003 Les Estrambords

I agree alot with your nose and palate..your like some psycho unknown twin on the net.

Anyways…Other lurkers please rate..or GV if you have time Please rate.

Otherwise my fantasy and exile are doomed in my constant up and down purchase of this wine.

Thanx a million for us Grape Suckas in Seattle!!

    OK…NEWB lurker here..wanting some attention.

2003 Domaine Richaud, Les Estrambords…I like to eat those fresh organic carrots then give myself an after shave slap in the face before doing the GV “Bite the Wine(vin)” taste test.

I may be odd…which is normal in Seattle(rain monster) but hey..carrot palate stained breath is truly a new way to drink wine. I started off by eating carrots and then tasting beer. I knew I was onto something.

Sorta like..farmer Joe meets Francois in a futuristic organic Starbucks.

(BTW..thats the buzz here in Seattle) Organic wine coffee bars..Late Nite!!!!

Not that I am excited..I am just in the KNOW. So open all the veggie late night bars serving bean/grape fusions as you can. It is a whole extract Starbuck culture I wish them not to capitalize on so…..

Taste my 2003 Les Estrambords and help me define an exit strategy on this evasive wine.

Number one right now has to be the Toad Hollow Erik’s the Red blend. It is our “go to” wine for about $12. Put it up against the $30 2003 Estancia Meritage this past weekend and it blew it away. Also worth mentioning, Bridlewood 2005 Reserve Viognier- found it on sale at our local grocery. Really nice buy for $14. Also enjoying the Trevor Jones Tawny “Jonesy” port right now.

    Three favorite wines:

    - Chateau Cheval Blanc (St. Emilion) – had a bottle of 1988 once and it blew my doors off

    - Elderton Command Shiraz (Barossa Valley) – like drinking jam

    - Leewin Artist Series Chardonnay (Margaret River) – very Burgundian (had to throw in a white)

Not every day drinkin’, but good nonetheless!

Just opened up the Fleur des Pins and it’s incredible; it’s basically drinking a pina colada. Thank you so much for the tip, I’ve visited your store multiple times now (I live in Hoboken) and consider it my mecca for wine. Sincerely, Dan D.

my favorite wine is a chateau saint jean chardonnay. You should rate this on one of your episodes as i am curious to see what others think of it. I feel that it is a great wine under $20

Great…nice to see all wines tasted are winners. Just a note the spreadsheet has 2005 Fleur Des Pins Graves listed twice with 2 different price tag $6.99 and $11.99

I want to see more episodes like this. Maybe one every couple months. When you do episodes like this, you tend to do wines that you think are a good QPR. I like the educational shows, too, but every once in awhile I’m just looking for wines that someone out there thinks are a bargain, so I can target them. I give them a try, and if I agree with the reviewer, I can salt in some bargain bottles.
