First sick day that I can remember. Wow! GV, don’t knock yourself out just to get back to the show before you’ve recovered. We’ll muddle through until you get back. QOTD: lots of soup and lots of different juices: orange, apple, tomato…whatever liquid strikes you as palatable.

  11. October 22, 2007

3rd! Sorry you’re feeling under the weather, Gary V. Hope you’re feeling better. When I am sick, nothing makes me happier than an orange Gatorade, or perhaps some Ruby Red Squirt. Or chicken broth. Mmm. Actually, those are all great any time.

By the way, I went out on a limb today and bought a bottle of wine of a varietal I have never tried before, just for you. I’m not going to tell you what it is until I taste it and see how it does for me.

    Feel better,
    Aaron

I feel sick too after finding out the socks won the pennant. QOTD: These are two things I drink when I am sick. 1. Ginger tea, made from fresh ginger boiled in water with some brown sugar. Totally clears the nose and helps the cough. 2. Whiskey. This kills the germs, helps the cough, and lets me forget the socks won the pennant.

  21. October 22, 2007

    Chris From NY

I think that Gary got that terrible disease Jetsitis. The symptoms are sore throat(yelling at the team)Nausea(rooting from your belly for a hopeless team) and the worst, suicidal thoughts, because even if you jumped off the empire state building the mess that used to be called your body would still look better than the jets defense. Good luck

  31. October 22, 2007

    Suzanne

Don’t know what kind of sick you are, but rest and liquids is pretty much the way to go, unless of course you have some sort of brain injury or electrolyte disorder, neither of which was evident in the video, but you never know. Feel better, anyway!

    Bundydb

QOTD: Sprite/Gatoraid Get a little sugar and/or electrolytes that you need esp if it hurts to swallow or you can’t hold much on your stomach. Chicken soup is awesome too. Drain off the noodles and the meat chunks if you are on a liquid diet for the time being. Once when I was sick I tried a plain can of chicken broth, and I don’t know if it was a bad brand or what, but it was horrible, lol. And when I was in school, if I had to miss a day, I would always watch one of the Star Wars movies (episodes 4,5 & 6). It was a bad year if I got to watch the series a few times each semester.

Hey Gary sorry to hear you’re under the weather. In our family, if you had a sore throat & cold Mom would reach for ginger ale, saltine crackers, hot tea and the classic chicken soap. The soup was mostly broth. I have friend who swears by zinc lozenges too. Hope that helps.

  71. October 22, 2007

    BobM

    Hey, Gary-

I don’t blame you. The way the Jets lost would make me sick too, if I were a fan. Looking at the glass as half-full, however, you can be glad you’re not a Cleveland fan.

Anyway I, like the rest of your fans, wish you a speedy recovery, and we’re looking forward to the next episode of WLTV.

    ImFeelingFitTony

Feel better Gary; tonight’s Californication was a darn good one and next week should make it a nice little debut season- hope that helps the cold just a little.

QOTD- Any kind of herbal iced tea. Green preferably with a little bit of mint for kick, or maybe some hot herbal tea, the kind that you can get your nose in and see some immediate sinus relief (chamomile, mint, or even a mild fruit flavored rooibis)

    QOTD: Hot Buttered Rum

I hate getting a cold because I can’t smell my darn wine. The spices in hot buttered rum will get through most anything (plus, the butter adds some texture).

    Buttered Rum Mix:

1 stick room temp. unsalted butter
    1 cup brown sugar
    1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
    1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
    1 pinch salt

Mix all together until everything is evenly distributed.
    Refrigerate until solid.

    Instructions:

Put approx. 1 tbsp. of mix into a mug
Pour in 2 shots of Rum
    Top-off with hot water

    Feel better soon, my friend!!!

I drink lots of water, sometimes fizzy water with lemon or lime, when I am sick.

Broth is good, especially Miso Soup. Mmm.

Emergen-C packets (I like the Cranberry ones best) are good. You dissolve them in a small glass of water.

Usually it takes a lot for me to get sick, so when I do I get hit pretty bad. In those cases I like to eat some saltine crackers and drink some 7 up and water….Gatorade is always good and so it hot black tea with honey, but i was raised with the 7 up and I stick by it.
    Hope you feel better soon!

    wildebeest

QOTD: It depends on what kind of sickness I’m dealing with, but for a nasty cold I’m constantly pouring water, Airborne, and Emergen-C down my gullet. Sometimes a nice hot tottie really hits the spot too (or a hot buttered rum)! I hope you feel better soon!

  141. October 23, 2007

    onemore

QOTD: Hot homemade ginger tea. I chop up large chunks of fresh ginger root and boil ‘em in water. Sometimes I add things to the teapot—a sprig of rosemary, some lemon wedges, some orange wedges, a bit of honey—but usually I drink it straight up. It always makes me feel better, especially if my throat is sore.

If my illness isn’t kicking my stomach into convulsions, I’ll drink orange juice. Sometimes I mix oj with 7-Up.

And I’m a chewable vitamin C fan. When I take vitamin C tablets, I get over the worst part of colds quickly. I don’t do a lot of cold medication because most of that stuff (1) doesn’t work on me anymore (now that so many have changed their ingredients) or (2) makes me feel even worse. For instance, Nyquil is 100% ineffective for me now and Theraflu makes me very nauseous. Stupid over-the-counter meds.

    Anyway: Get well soon, Gary.

    Drink and enjoy!

    NADINE

Hey Gary, take care of that cold hey. Old grandmother remedies are the best. Herbal teas with some honey and lemon and two spoons of either whiskey, cognac or rum, should do the trick. Don’t drink alcohol as if you’re on meds such as extra strength tylenol or aspirin, the two don’t really mix well. You could also warm up some milk and add a spoon of molasses and if your stomach is not too woozy mix it up with oatmeal. The trick is to drinking a lot of fluids and resting and not over tiring yourself and to keep warm. Home made soups are good too when your sick and before going to bed you can take NEO CITRON, stuff like this and VIx VAPORUB and rub it on your chest and throat and if your sinus are congested at the bottom of nose (nostrils). If your not on meds a good cognac can’t hurt. Take care of yourself, pamper yourself, take a warm bath you know but remember to keep warm, hope you feel better soon :)

You are wearing yourself thin! Slow down. I’ve always wondered and blogged about professional wine and food critics and what they do when they get sick because they can’t taste anything. It is the equivalent of a movie critic going temporarily blind and not being able watch a flick. Can one actually give an honest review of a wine with all its subtlties with a cold? Tough one. Feel better!!

I drink tons and tons of airborne and Emergent-C (this stuff really works) when I feel even the twinge of a cold coming on and I vitamin up as well. Usually I start feeling my glands in my neck tighten and I attack it right away. It just happened to me yesterday and I’m getting panicked b/c I’m going the NY Wine Experience this week and I don’t want to have it ruined by a cold.

So far so good. It is working. Plus, plenty of sleep and absolutely NO ALCOHOL. It is the worst thing for a cold or sickness. It beats up the weakened immune system and dehydrates you as well.

In fact all this is so envigorating, I wonder why I don’t drink this when I’m not sick. And it’s lots cheaper than wine, hmmm… Oh my, you/we ARE changing the wine world.

    Get well Gary.

I like hot tea with honey… preferably made by my wife so I can stay in front of the TV watching Back to the Future.

Get well soon Gary. It was sweet of you to let everybody look at you even though you’re under the weather. Chicken soup with lots of garlic. 7-Up or ginger ale. Water if you can stomach it.
Don’t like gatorade or tea otherwise I might recommend those but I hate them.If I’m not on medication a little alcohol of some kind to let me get some zzzzzzz’s.

    QOTH: HOT TODDY’s

Burns the congestion, tension and leaves you warm and relaxed.

Gary, It seems strange that you would be sick. :( I’ll bet it takes alot to get you down. It didn’t have anything to do with the Jets losing to the Benagsl did it? That’s enough to make you sick. I hope you are soon back on your feet. We’ll miss you.
QOD: Depending on where it hurts, homemade chicken soup or hot lemon tea with honey.

Gary-Sorry you are not feeling well.I hope you get better soon! I have had about 6 colds in the last 6 weeks! Yuk! QOTD: Twinnings darjeeling tea, with honey and about one ounce of bicardi rum. :)

Know you are all better now, but I like echinacea tea, w/lemon and honey. Sprite (and not diet when I’m sick) and lots of OJ and Cranberry juice.
But for soup, I can’t do bland soup, chicken noodle makes me feel gross. If I have chicken noodle I pour some salsa in there for a kick. And a bunch of jalepenos. Tom kha w/schirraca, or pad thai. Seems weird…but I really want spicey food when I’m sick.
Glad you are all good now!

QOTD: Watermelon Gatoraid. It is very hard to find in anything other than the little single-serve bottles, but when I can find it I’m all over that stuff. It is like a liquefied watermelon Jolly Rancher with electrolytes to keep my body in perfect balance.

QOTD: Hot drinks, like Red Bush tea, NZ Manuka honey in warm water. Like RZA says in Coffee & Cigarettes: lay off the dairy products, chill the citric acid!
