Stop drinking wine! You’re beating up on your taxed immune system. If you are healthy enough tomorrow you should do a show, do one that doesn’t involve drinking or tasting anything with alcohol in it. Alcohol is the worst for you when you are sick.

Do a show on wine crackers, wine biscuits or goofy wine designed foods or something. Feel better!

I also like a nice Roasted Butternut Squash Soup, a solid Chicken Tortilla Soup, and any sort of Mushroom Soup. That would be my top 5 soups.

Here is a repeat of what I wrote on Monday…………

My sick day drink is a whole lot of hot tea with a hand full (3000 mg) of vitamin C. I repeat the vitamin C in 12 hours. Plus one tablet (not two) of Sudifed and 1000 mg of tylenol initally times one dose and then repeat one tablet (not two) of Sudifed and 325 mg of Tylenol with a hot tea chaser every six hours for a total of three times. This always makes me feel well within the day and I am up and going strong without any additional medication for days to weeks except for my daily dose of 500 mg of vitamin C. What a concoction…..but a good sick day one.

  65. October 24, 2007

QOTD: too many to pick just one. But you might want to try a homemade soup with kielbasa, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, corn, PLENTY of onions and garlic, and black pepper, and chipotle pepper powder. Maybe throw in some black eyed peas or navy beans too, if you’re in a bean mood. Easy to make, good for what ails ya. Try it – you’ll thank me. Get better.

Favourite soup is surely Pho Bo – Vietnamise Beef Noodle soup, ideally cooked up at a Saigon street stall that uses the pavement for a chopping board and charges around five cents a bowl (tipping does seem appropriate). Those guys work so hard, display so much dignity in the midst of serious adversity… and make such good soup, it’s humbling. Check http://www.noodlepie.com/ – great blog with a Pho Bo recipe on the front page. Good luck with your new site and get well!

  69. October 24, 2007

Get well soon Gary. I’m still trying to shake a flu that I’ve had for several days now. I went back to work today after taking two days off. I was out of it by 11am.
QOTD: sorry to toot my own horn, but my favorite soup is what I call “Coast Guard Soup” which is a variation of a Portugese Kale soup. It’s beef based and it also has Lingica, (a Portugese sausage) potatoes, carrots, celery, green beans, parsnips, onions and a few other secret things. I also dig a good Italian fish stew, leek/potato soup, turkey soup and others.

  85. October 24, 2007

U wish my wife was yours

    Hope you’re feeling better.

I don’t like cats like I don’t like those Facebook and MyPspace sights so the world will have to do without on more cat.

My idea for an episode it to taste the secondary wines of the higher priced wines. For example, I just learned the other day that the maker of Amon Ra (which I really liked) has a lower priced label. The same for Chateau Lafite Rothschild. They have some kind of 2nd Cru that I tried a while back. I think you get the idea.

QOTD: My favorite soup was a Lobster Bisque we had on Celebrity Cruises one time.

  86. October 24, 2007

    The Doc

Since you are in the area Pal’s Cabin cream of mushroom is as advertised, absolutely fantastic. Otherwise New England clam chowder is the bomb when done right. As for the Ms. lobster bisque is a must, or italian wedding soup. Get better bro.

  87. October 24, 2007

    Capt M

Flu doesn’t go away in one or two days. See you next week, Gary. Wine does not taste good AT ALL when you have the flu. It’s time to take a few days off of wine. I recently was wondering myself.. Gary has not had a flu since I started watching WLTV way over a year ago. I had it TWICE this year, for some reason. QOTD: Lobster Bisque, which doesn’t go well with flu either. Very hot little pot of lobster bisque with a glass of chilled crisp chardonnay or pinot gris.

  88. October 24, 2007

    John Witherspoon (J DUB)

    HEy Gary

Yeah, I’m still coughing lightly and have some nose stuff going on. It’s basically a two week deal, Gary, 4 days of which get you feeling pretty low. So, hang in there. I felt much better today. so, I got my flu shot to avoid the really bad shit that’s on the way.

  90. October 24, 2007

  96. October 24, 2007

    mrzitro

    QOTD: my mom’s chicken soup.

I haven’t seen anyone else suggest this:

If you have the common cold, take zinc gluconate (aka coldeeze) to reduce the length of time you are sick. I use the sugar free ones (white tablets) instead of the nasty tasting lozenges.

If you have the FLU, too bad. If you have really bad symptoms, see your doctor. He may prescribe Tamiflu which may help you from getting a secondary infection in your lungs.

I’m not a doctor (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express), so ask your doctor about the zinc 1st.

  97. October 24, 2007

    t_moderne

QOTD: Best soup I can remember was a ginger infused beef soup that I had in Europe. Otherwise, I’d have to go with either good old chicken soup or a really hearty minestrone with sausage and pasta.

Brunswick Stew! It’s got beef, pork, and chicken, with potatoes, corn, and other stuff. Broth is thick, and super flavorful. Great for a cool evening or just to make that bloody cold go away.

  115. October 24, 2007

    Die-Lon

I second Alex’s idea with the Pho. Fantastic Vietnamese soup with incredibly large portions for cheap. Maybe put some Rooster sauce and some mint in there. It’ll clear you right up and send you off to make more Wine-Library TV.

    Shedding my lurkerism.

You do look awful, but I bet you could make yourself look that way when you were 12 and you really didn’t want to go to school.

Soup– Cuban black bean soup… also good for all sorts of ailments.

  117. October 25, 2007

    Lee Ritscher

Potato leek soup. It’s good for you, with lots of high anti-oxidant leeks and onions, and no phlegm causing cheese or dairy products. Sounds like you could use a batch. Poor thing…

I hope you feel better soon, but take it easy man! :) Being sick isn’t all bad. It can be a nice change from the hubbub of everyday life, and it brings a tenderness that, if embraced, can be somewhat pleasant.

    GET BETTER BIG G.!!!

QOTD: I think I gotta go with a throwback to my childhood: Chickerina. I don’t know who made it, but it was basically a version of Italian Wedding soup with tiny spherical pieces of pasta, some green leafy vegetable (maybe spinach), carrots, maybe some diced tomato, chicken pieces, and these little tiny meatballs. I used to have it at my Grandmother’s house all the time. Great QOTD, great memories.

    Elliot Essman

Gary – soup doesn’t work as much for this kind of thing. To really get better, you need to push some adrenaline into your system by getting excited by something.

Personally, I suggest offering us free shipping with the code “garygetsbetter” which will allow you to feel the excitement and quantify that excitement with the code phrase. Your subconscious is bound to absorb this subliminal message way better than your body absorbs the (over-rated) soup.

sickGV – In one of the recent episodes you tagged an aroma in a wine and said it smelled like this black liquid stuff your wife makes you take when you’re getting sick – I was thinking then that it was probably an echinacea tincture (maybe someone said that back on the episode, I didn’t read the comments). It has a very definitive medicinal-herbal smell that I’ve smelled in wines before too. So anyway, she should be making you take that now – and you’d be expanding your palate while getting better!
Too bad you’re sick – that’s always the worst. However (from a very selfish vantage point) the 2 sicky episodes have allowed me the time to backtrack and catch up on some episodes I hadn’t gotten to – one being the Sasha FREE code! That’s what I get for falling behind…
QOTD – i never met a soup I didn’t love. Soup is great.
Finally – some old advice from my mother. Regarding colds and alcohol drinking – the cold will last 7 days if you abstain from drinking, a week if you don’t…

Someone named Lucarelli once told me that if you have the cold or flu, boil some chianti, let it cool, then chug it. You will begin to sweat out the evil spirits and retain the spirits that matter. Also, don’t do this if you are on antihistimines.

Take your time coming back, you’ve done a ton for us, we can all be patient. QOTD: I absolutely love and highly recommend a very spicy peppered chicken soup. Pho Ga Soup. See LYON IN THE KITCHEN on Discovery Health Network. A couple of bowls of the soup, (Vietnamese Chicken Noodle), and a few shots of Irish whiskey will fix you up for sure. Being sick sucks.
