I don’t remember having one, but I have two in my cellar that I got in Italy. I will try at least one before the end of the year. Thanks for reminding me that I need to drink these.

GV- you hit it with the Barolo entry question. I told my wife the other day that we need to venture into that territory soon. It would be great to hear about some ’starter’ Barolos that wont break the bank – if they exist.

    - Maybe the bric del Friac´s by Paolo Scavino will improve over the years adn be even nicer!

I Love Barolo! I have a cellar full of them, mostly 2000 and 2001, so none that old. My favorite has been 1998 Mauro Molino Barolo Vigna Conca. I had this for my anniversery at Coach Insignia, in Detroit. Gorgeous nose on this wine.

    Great episode GV.

I have had a few barolos and I have been big fans of all of them. My first experience with Barolo was at Da Benito’s in Union. They have a really good wine list over there, and you can find some under-priced italian gems mixed in with some overpriced CA cabs. I had a ‘98 Pio Cesare Barolo for like 65 bucks a couple of years ago that really impressed me. I ended up meeting pio boffa at wine library a year or two ago and he signed my a bottle of his 2001 barolo that i bought. i look forward to popping it in a couple of years.

I got very lucky and my local market sold me 2 1997 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Calamandrana for $4.99 each. I used my handy dandy Pocket PC Wine Guide and saw that the values were somewhere around $33 so I picked up the last 2 and drank 1. Nice floral notes with a rich ruby red color. I sipped this wine for close to 20 minutes and every taste had a different aspect to it. Blackberries, chocolate, cherries. It was fantastic. I look for good deals like this on Barolo as I can but not easy.

    Thanx Gary

    Hi Gary,

I can see it now:Ben Stiller in the fantastic new comedy film “There’s something about Barolo”

QOTD: No but I have had Aust. Nebbiolo. Only 1 good one as far as I am aware.

    QOTD:

Had a 1996 aldo Conterno Bussia on Tuesday night (my birthday). They are classics and there is nothing like the nose of an older Barolo.

Have had one or two Barolos, none have stuck yet, the cellar has exactly zero. Recently I tried a Barbaresco that I enjoyed: Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2003. I don’t quite know the difference between Barbaresco and Barolo, both use nebbiolo, so is it a regional diff, or is it a production difference. I’m sure I could google search it, but I’m feeling lazy today.

QOTD – No, so far not had one. Got an Ascherivini in the cellar, but it’s a 2002, so at best I’m hoping for a basic intro into the style rather than anything more.

QOTD: Had one once in a wine tasting class a few years ago, and have wanted to try it again ever since! Very delish. A little above my price point. However, I have seen some at Total Wine (Cherry Hill & Delaware) for under $25. But I’m hesitant to try those. But now that I know the 2000 vintage is good, I’ll see if I can snag one of those that’s not too pricey.

QOTD: I’m a big fan of Barolo like you, G.V. My favorite Barolo that I had this year was Franco M. Martinetti Barolo Marasco 2000. Soooo floral, graceful, absolutely beautiful wine.
