Favorite recent Barolo is also a 2000. Guido Porro. Kermit Lynch out here in Berkeley is the importer. Under $40 too, which is nice.

    Never had a Barolo, unfortunately.

QOTD — I confess, I have not had a barolo. The only Nebbiolo-based wines I’ve had were from the more northerly Gattinara area, and I didn’t like either.

I must have, at some point, had a Barolo in Italy last year. Sorry I just don’t recall. But I do now remember that it is made with the nebiolo grape (spelling?)and that it has a brownish hue. Thanks for another informative show.

    HEY Gary
love the Barolo – probably the favorite is the Rivetto “Leon” Barolo. Most likely because I visited the winery while I was in Piemonte this summer so they have a special place in my heart. The “Leon” Vineyard is their top dog but their other Barolo “Guilin” is real good too and not as expensive. I have had the Oberto, but not the 2000, I think it was the 2003, as I can remember really good. Also the Oberto Dolcetto d’ Alba is steal.

    See ya

glad to see you coming up with some _good_ wines GV. Seems you were on a dry spell for a while in finding some exceptional wines. Its fun to see a GV with a smile on his face ;) Next time try to find some cheaper ones, tho 140 is wayy out of my range, LOL

Great ep GV – I have wanted to start trying Barolo and this was a great intro to the wines. I have seen the Giacomo wine you tasted in a few shops and hearing your flavor descriptors for me tells me I would probably not like it – thank you for saving me $60. The first wine, however, seems like its a little more in my budget and more my style.

    QOTD: Haven’t had a Barolo.

QOTD: only had one barolo. It was $20 by the glass at Rao’s restaurant (Caesars Palace, Vegas) and I thought, what the hell. It was truly awesome and worth the price.

Gary, thanks again for Facebook birthday wishes.

QOTD: Nope…I’ve never heard of Barolo wine before. It will certainly be the next type of wine I pick up next time I’m at the store!

Same thing with Dolcetto – never heard of it before until one episode….now I can’t get enough of it.

I always order them on wine lists in restaurants and I have had 2 of the ones you tasted today but I don’t buy them to own as I would have to drink them by myself and the cost is a lot for 1-2 glasses.

Cut GV some slack Kahuna; he just got over being sick and the Sunday Jets game probably didn’t help his recovery any. This Sunday won’t be any better.

Have had several lower priced ($12-20 range) Barolo’s and have never been disappointed.
