    BAROLO!!!

QOTD: I’ve unfortunately only had one Barolo, but given my modest, recent college grad budget, I’m lucky I’ve had one at all. We sell it at the Italian restaurant in which I work, and it’s a 2003 by Stefano Farina.

QOTD: I have only had a handful of Barolo’s but of them my favorite one to date was probably the 1997 Stefano Farina Reserva that I had with a little Taleggio about two weeks ago. I have a half dozen 2001’s stored away in the cellar for a few years down the road…and I am very excited to see how they progress in the years to come.

Now can we expect to see a 2000 Barbaresco show? Or maybe a 2002 Burgundy show…I like seeing some aged wines on the show. Thanks for a truely great show…and all of your effort to keep so many of us entertained. Good luck in buying the Jets….

I’ve had several, but not in a way that I could really dig in and appreciate them. (Have enjoyed them at large high-end wine tastings). I’ve never bought one….would consider buying tha Albarella now, though.

    Very good show Gary!

QOTD: Yes for sure, I was on a small Barolo tasting last week.

QOTD: Gary you nailed it. I haven’t had a Barolo yet, though I have wanted to try one. The biggest issue is the price they are and not wanting to buy a “loser.” When I only purchase 3-5 wines a year that are over $30 due to my limited means, I want to know that I am buying a wine I will thoroughly enjoy. I will seek out the Oberto, but find that wine prices in Hawaii are often significantly higher than on the mainland. Thanks again Gary.

QOTD: OF COURSE! ONE OF MY FAV WINES ON EARTH :)
funny that you didn’t make a final statement about the 2000 vintage hahaha
thank you Gary, I love this kind of episodes! :)

Great show. I have never had a barolo but will now. I have my dayoff tomorrow and will take a trip to Spec’s here in Houston. I will probably try a lower end bottle (under $20) and if the descriptions are tantalizing enough maybe even a $50 one. I am always ready to try new things.

Have only had one barolo in my life. It was a bottle of Pio Cesare 1998 at a restaurant in Las Vegas. Talk about kicking up the price point…

Will have to have some more. Have always enjoyed chianti and would like to try more Italian wines. Also, I have had a number of nebbiolo wines from both Washington and Oregon that have been very tasty. So I figure with the extra knowledge of the grape from the wine makers in Italy, it should be that much better.

I’ve never tried barolo but from what ive seen today and other episodes on this wine, you make it sound very intriguing and interesting. Your wine recommendations are usually right on the money. You Definitely inspire me to try different kinds of wine that i have usually pass by without looking at during my trips to the local wine shop. Keep up the good work gary

Never had Barolo but anyway I’m new to wine drinking,
I was looking at the prices and it seems a little high for my wallet.
im in the under $20 range :) maybe later I will get me one to try it out.

Thanks Big G, Love the episode. I’m giving it 93 points, could have gone a little higher, but it only had really 1 good QPR.

QOTD: Yes and it’s Parusso Barolo Mariondino 2000.

QOTD: I haven’t tried Barolo. They, at least the ones on today’s episode, appear to be out of my price range. My palate is still developing. Only recently have I come to appreciate red wine, so I don’t think I’m ready for this wine at these prices. If there’s a really good Barolo under $20 I’d love to give it a try. I totally dig on the “try everything” philosophy.

QOTD: 1998 Teo Costa Monroj. I think a lot of it has to do with the story behind it like you said a couple episodes ago. We have a friend whose daughter used to live in Italy and I gave him $25 to have her bring us a bottle of wine when she came back to visit. She gave the Teo Costa wine to him to give to us and I put it in the cellar. Last year my daughter was supposed to have a graduation party but we had to postpone it because she was sick. We live in St. Louis and our friends had moved to Louisville, KY. Since they hadn’t said they were coming we assumed they weren’t so we didn’t call them to tell them it was postponed. The door bell rang and there they were! It turned out great because we got to sit with just them and their granddaughter and catch up on things. Our daughter was feeling better and joined us as well. I remembered the wine and popped it open. It was fantastic! We sat there drinking the wine and talking for the next 2 hours! Second place goes to an older vintage (don’t remember exactly) Vietti barolo that also has a story but I’ll save that for later.

we need more barolo and brunello episodes, man I always say that after you do a barolo episode, :) . Yes, I’ve had barolo’s(though I haven’t had any barberesco’s ironically). I absolutely love them, unfortunetly they aren’t easy on the wallet. I just love the flavor profiles that they bring and they are so interesting. I’ve only had young ones though, so I’m looking forward to 2012 when I pop my first 99 Scavino.

QOTD: my favorite barolo is the 01 La Spinetta. That one just really opened my eyes big time on barolo and has really made me want to drink more of them when I get the chance

the best barolo I have ever tried wasn’t even a barolo per se – the 2001 Gaja “Sperss” – 96% nebbiolo, 4% barbera, which puts it outside the DOCG of Barolo… unbelievable. A little more affordable is the 2001 Prunotto Barolo which is showing unbelievably right now.

QOTD – I can’t remember having a Barolo. They have somehow seemed intimidating to me for a few reasons – including the price, the necessity to decant, and the need to cellar them for a few years before enjoying them. I guess I have to start seeking them out more…

pretty clever software. It deleted my entry as “mikeyra”. QOTD, I love Barolos, but haven’t tried a real high-end one. I have two bottles of 1996 Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo Le Brunate from a previous WLTV episode. Haven’t popped one yet because I read that they still may be a little young.

So the user name from my previous post and the Jets have something in common–no D. BTW, a friend told me that he saw a sign at a Jets game that said J(ust) E(nd) T(he) S(eason). Lets hope that the Kellen era brings good tidings.

QOTD: Never had a barolo, GV. In fact, the only time I’ve heard it mentioned was on ‘Sex and the City’ (Yes, I watch the re-runs on TBS, and I dont care who knows about it), when Carrie was dating the Russian guy. He kissed her after she drank a sip of barolo and commented “Yes, I think we go with the barolo for dinner tonight.” I’m less of a man for knowing that quote, arent I. I dont care.

Got a Barolo in the cellar sitting next to a few Amarones that are aging. Still haven’t had one of either, but I’ve made the purchase!

Hey Gary, I actually got to taste the 2000 Oberto Albarella with my wine buyer, the vendor and either the importer or someone associated with the winery, whatever he was Italian, and we tasted them in little 2oz plastic cups and I remember it being really pretty and we were in the process of bringing it in, but ended up taking Oberto Barbera D’Alba which was very nice also as a QPR, but now I’m really gonna try to push bringing the Barolo into our shop. So that and another one of Oberto’s Barolos and another one I tasted at work were the first Barolos I ever tasted. I have never bought one, and today was the first time I have got the chance to taste a Brunello, and a 2001 none the less, and it was pretty good but I think I like the 2003 Corte Alla Flora Vino Nobile de Montelpuciano better than the Brunello I tried and it was only $22. Great wines though. Right now I re-visting my old school wine days of last year and drinking the beautiful delicious Cali New World Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir with 78% Pinot and 22% Mondeuse grapes which is quite intriguing. Such a delicious wine. I give it 91+, not as good as the 2005 Fixin I had last week which was free and a 93+ and a baby.

Gary, Jeff George called me and wanted me to tell you that he’s here for you. You know, if you need an extra quarterback or anything.

I picked up a Barolo last fall I think, but it’s still in the cooler–waiting until I can find myself proper supplies for a quality osso buco. So no, I haven’t had one per se.

QOTD: I’ve only had Barolos at wine tastings. Will keep my eyes open for one.
I was interested to read the inside story on Dan and Dave. Very educational comments.
