I always order them on wine lists in restaurants and I have had 2 of the ones you tasted today but I don’t buy them to own as I would have to drink them by myself and the cost is a lot for 1-2 glasses.

Cut GV some slack Kahuna; he just got over being sick and the Sunday Jets game probably didn’t help his recovery any. This Sunday won’t be any better.

Gary, thanks again for Facebook birthday wishes.

QOTD: Nope…I’ve never heard of Barolo wine before. It will certainly be the next type of wine I pick up next time I’m at the store!

Same thing with Dolcetto – never heard of it before until one episode….now I can’t get enough of it.

QOTD: only had one barolo. It was $20 by the glass at Rao’s restaurant (Caesars Palace, Vegas) and I thought, what the hell. It was truly awesome and worth the price.

Great ep GV – I have wanted to start trying Barolo and this was a great intro to the wines. I have seen the Giacomo wine you tasted in a few shops and hearing your flavor descriptors for me tells me I would probably not like it – thank you for saving me $60. The first wine, however, seems like its a little more in my budget and more my style.

    QOTD: Haven’t had a Barolo.

    HEY Gary
love the Barolo – probably the favorite is the Rivetto “Leon” Barolo. Most likely because I visited the winery while I was in Piemonte this summer so they have a special place in my heart. The “Leon” Vineyard is their top dog but their other Barolo “Guilin” is real good too and not as expensive. I have had the Oberto, but not the 2000, I think it was the 2003, as I can remember really good. Also the Oberto Dolcetto d’ Alba is steal.

    See ya

I must have, at some point, had a Barolo in Italy last year. Sorry I just don’t recall. But I do now remember that it is made with the nebiolo grape (spelling?)and that it has a brownish hue. Thanks for another informative show.

    I’m too cheap.

Favorite recent Barolo is also a 2000. Guido Porro. Kermit Lynch out here in Berkeley is the importer. Under $40 too, which is nice.

    Orion Slayer

I did not see the origianl episode, so thanks for redoing this. Ever since reading about Barolos in “The Wine Bible” I’ve been interested in them!

QOTD: The only Barolo I’ve had was a 2002 Damilano. The bottle was on the discount shelf ($16.99, normally $30) so I tried it. I was surprised that the wine wasn’t more tannic. The flavor was good but I’d like to try that $100 Barolo you had on the show today!

  41. October 30, 2007

Gret episode…this is becoming one of my favorite regions….so damn good!
QOTD – Shit yeah….I am a Barolo lover [Thanks Joe G for the gentle nudge ;) ] Favorite Barolo has to be Liciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2001. I had this at the epic Buffalo WLTV offline!

I had a Barolo in a wine tasting class I took in January, so it has been quite a while and the amount that I had was just a smidgen. Since then, I started a wine tasting group and were are working our way through France and will soon be going to Italy and Spain. So I will be adding it to the itinerary. For anyone who wants to learn more about wine, start a wine tasting group. I have been hosting it for only six weeks and I am amazed at how much I have learned so far! Plus you meet new people who like wine!

  46. October 30, 2007

i thought you said no more barolo episodes. but why not, they are beautiful.

QOTD: of course. i have a few in my cellar and i have my eye on a few more for later drinking. the problem is that most that are begin consumed now are are just way too young. it is really hard too to decant a wine for 5 hours at the resto. on that note, they surely have the possibility to be monolithic in their youth which leave people with the feeling of ” don’t get it ” feeling.

QOTD: I got a few bottles of the 03 Ghisolfi Barolo for an Italian dinner last week. Rated 92 by WS. It was overall good but the mid-palatte to the finish a bit too earthy. I am putting the extra bottles away for a few more years (recommended after 2010) before I open the next one.

  51. October 30, 2007

  55. October 30, 2007

I’ve wanted to try some for a long time and again, you never want to pick a wine in the above $x price range and have it be bad, or moreso, a miss. But I’m certainly going to do some homework and search a few out!

Not to start the smack talk…but…GO SKINS; don’t break my heart two weeks running.

I’ve never tried a Barolo before but I have one in my cellar right now. It’s a 2001 Barolo Serralunga by Paolo Manzone, and I hope to pop it open in a few years. Hopefully it will become my favourite style of wine.

    amgryger

QOTD: I’ve said it many times before, but I will say it again. Nebbiolo is my favorite grape. I’ve only ever had one nebbiolo wine that was a complete let down for me. There is something about its flavor profile that I respond to in a way that transcends normal flavor experiences. So to answer the QOTD, I don’t think I can actually pick a favorite.

Nice show. Always good to see old world juice (even when they’re from new-world-type vintages).

QOTD: Have had a few (not too many). Most memorable was the 1996 Francesco Rinaldi Le Brunate which I loved.

  72. October 30, 2007

QOTD: I have a couple of Barolos in my cellar that are a couple of years from hitting their stride, so I’m still a Barolo virgin. Today’s episode makes me even more anxious to drink one, though.

    carnyc

    QOTD:

Yes, but only two Barolos thus far:

    1) 2000 Massolino Barolo Margheria (from WL) – this was fantastic w/ a huge porterhouse!
    2) 1993 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito – drank this a few months ago at a BYO called “Nook” in Hells Kitchen w/ lamb chops…was still goin pretty strong but was more elegant than the Massolino.

It’s not my favorite wine, but it’s hard to deny its quality.

BTW, any of you who live in NYC have to try Nook. No corking fee, very reasonably priced and very good food!

    Great episode, thx!

  77. October 30, 2007

    Will "Ha Ha" Shatter

Actually opened a ‘98 Gaja Sori Tildin several months ago over an amazing dinner, not a barolo but mix of nebbiolo and barbera, bought from friend at a drastically reduced price, a steal at the $120 it cost me, the wine was in a major dumb phase and was not impressed with it, especially for the price, even at what I paid. Give me a Brunello di Montalcino anytime….brother, pair with boar, venison or osso buco, absolute nirvana, and buy two for the price of a nebbiolo equivilent!!!

The last Barolo I had was the 03 Vietti. It was really very tasty, and at $40 seemed like a steal, though it was still too young. In another couple of years I think it’ll be fantastic.

    Russ J

Nice move with the 2006 jersey, GV.

QOTD: Barolo’s are some of my favorite wines. I have not had tons of them, due to the prices, but I have had a couple dozen or so. Favorite was a ‘95 I had a couple of years ago at a Battali place in NYC. Don’t remember the details, but it was outstanding.

  82. October 30, 2007

    John Farrin

Have never had a Barolo before. On your recommendation I ordered 3 bottles of the 2000 Oberto Barolo Vigneto Alberella so that I can answer the question of whether I’ve had a Barolo. You’re a very good salesman, and I appreciate that having been one myself :)

    Thanks for the continuing education.

I’ve had a bunch of Barolos. Amongst my favourite wines, although I do not drink enough of them.
Paolo Scavino is my favourite producer. His Carobric (1999) and Bric del Fiasc are amonst my favourites.
Also had an excellent 2001 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis at a recent WLTV offline which will lead me to try other Sandrone offerings..

Definitely have had some Barolo. That last wine looks awefully tempting. In any case this was a great episode. I love it how you describe serious wines w/o being serious. For Halloween you need to break out the Sir Gary outfit.

A Barolo that rocks that is not too expensive: Guido Porro Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco 2001
Has wonderful plum and cherry that lasts for days on the finish.

    Autoproxy

QOTD: No favorite Barolo for me, although I’ve tried about 8 or so. High single digits. I find them to actually be priced on the high side, but I guess that can still be a value. Just not my kind of value.

  98. October 30, 2007

    Garret Nagle

Today’s show is classic. You didn’t say anything that will be remembered till the day you die, but this is exactly the kind of episode I would introduce to someone that is into wine, but hasn’t been exposed to WLTV. Your style of delivery today was very accomodating to both the CKC crowd, and people of a more traditional or stereotypical wine background. You weren’t a fruit bomb today (Gary is Sorry.com), nor were you an old world dirt bomb void of any entertaining value. You hit the sweetspot of balance today by not being over the top, and not being a serious Sir Gary kind of guy (I like sir gary but I don’t like the real Sir Garys at every wine tasting).

Don’t get me wrong, I like the outrageous Gary too, but the balanced Gary is my favorite.

QOTD: yes, I have had Barolo, and in a week will be opening a 1998 Batasiolo Vignetto Cerequio single vineyard Barolo. I’m worried it might be too new world in style as I’ve heard about Batasiolo, but we will see!

  99. October 30, 2007

    Dave Grega

Yup….had a Barolo….sell Barolo….love Barolo!!! Piedmont is my favorite region…I have been noticing that quite a few vintages have Incorporated a new world side to their flavor profiles…I think there is something more than just hot vintages going on here! My favorite is the 2001 Per Ellen Barolo by Cascina Adelaide (new producer…check them out they are up and coming) the Per Ellen got a 94 in either WS or RP I can’t remember but I know that I gave it a 93 my self….I whole sale it for around 75 a bottle…great stuff…bought a case for my personal use….

QoTD: Nope; I’ve always been too intimidated to spend 40, 50 (or more) bones on a bottle of wine. It’s certainly something I can’t afford to do too often as a GSC’er, and everyone’s told me it’s ill-advised to buy a “low-end” (40, 50USD) barolo rather than a great cab or merlet at the same price, but the Oberto under 40USD and with a pretty great recommendation from GV himself sounds like one I may have to try … when I get my next paycheque … which is probably tomorrow!

  101. October 30, 2007

    Oh, I forgot: I second the motion for Sir Gary to make another appearance :~}

  102. October 30, 2007

    Andy

QOTD: Have not had a Barolo yet but it sounds like something I would love based on your description of the flavor profile. Embarrassing side note, had never heard of Barolo wines before this episode, I’m just getting into this whole world. I just ordered my first case from the Wine Lib yesterday (major props and thanks for the shipping deal), and have not reached Italy in my roomates copy of The Wine Bible so the exposure level is low. Thanks for getting us (me especially) stoaked on wine, I may have to seek a bottle of this out when my CKC budget allows.

keep tasting, as I just get started

My favorite Italian wines are amarone’s and Barolo’s. My most recent favorite was the 2000 Damilano Barolo which I snagged a case for about $30 a bottle!

    Hey Gary
I’m new to your show and new to wine , love your show.
It is awesome. Any information or introductions to wine for newbies is appreciated.

Great episode, GV! I saw a nebbiolo rose at the store today. Didn’t buy it. Wonder if it could possibly be any good?

QOTD: One of the very first “fine” wines I ever had (about 20 years ago) was a Ceretto barolo and I loved it. I haven’t had all that much barolo in the intervening years but I like it lot when I do get a chance to drink it.

QOTD: O-for-Barolo GV. Never tried one. Will be picking three up later this week to give them a whirl, however.

Never had a barolo. I have 2 in my cellar, a Massolino 2000 (GV rated!) and a Silvio Grasso 1999. One day I’ll get super curious and pop them.

Never had a Barolo, so I do not have a favorite.

Why is it no one ever smells or tastes grapes in a wine????? Kind of makes you wonder about the raspberries, cherries, etc.

I have never had a Barolo. I have the 2000 Oberto Barolo Vigneto Alberella in my shopping cart! We have to try new things. As my mentor [ Gary ] says.

I don’t think I’ve had any Barolo. I have had Nebbiolo, by itself without much time for it to breathe, that was a bad idea. I definitely relate to the idea of not wanting to gamble on a pricey varietal. It’s a catch-22 too because if I do see a cheap one it makes me wary of whether or not it’s any good or a good example of the varietal. I’ll eventually bite the bullet but I still feel like there’s a lot of less expensive wine for me to explore.

Way to hit the big leagues. I’m very much lusting after that Cerretto.

Great Barolo Show! It looks like the fuzzy Gary is back.

QOTD: Yes, had one 3 years ago. I remember it was a great wine & the next day looking Barolo up on the internet to find out what the heck it was. I learned Barolo is from Piedmont and that there were other wines from Italy besides Chianti & Bruenello. Haven’t had one since because of the price tag.

Tremendous show, THANKS!! QOTD: I’ve never tasted Barolo, although I have one in cellar. How can I get one of the new wristbands?? I’m a hard-core, long time, pure love Vayniac. I did send two pictures with the old wristband. I’ll send 10 with the new one.

QOTD: I’ve had a few, nothing over $30. I’ve typically been a little let down. Raisin and plum flavor profiles aren’t my bag, and I find that’s what they’ve delivered. Maybe I’m wrong.

I’m into Italian wines though. So many cool and underrated regions and varietals. I’ve found some treasures.

Recently in Piemonte on a terrific epicurean tour (hint, hint, Gary) and had a 1998 Bricco Rocche Barolo Riapo that was simply delicious. It had the copper brown rim in the glass described in this episode. What impresses me about Barolo is how much the nose reminds me of truffles. I mentioned this to a sommelier at a restaurant there and he said Barolo reflects the soil as do the truffles that grow in this area. I did not like the Barolos aged en barrique as this seemed to overwhelm the nebbiolo grape. The wines aged en botte (large Slovenian oak casks) were much more to my taste.

Alright Gary, I’ve got to call you out on this one, because combined events T&F is my sport. Dan O’Brian (who dominated the decathlon for about a 7-8 year stretch, and STILL holds the USA record, and the 3rd best point total ever) didn’t qualify in ‘92 due to a tactical error on the pole vault; and Dave Johnson probably would’ve won gold but he suffered a stress fracture in his foot early in the first day at Barcelona, and competed the final 7 or 8 events with a broken foot — and STILL managed to win the bronze. Meanwhile, Dan was in a stretch of winning 3 consecutive World Championships (arguably just as important as the Olympics, to us track people) and of course won the gold in 1996. Google up the best decathlon scores for each year in the past few decades, and you’ll see Dan (& Dave) absolutely dominating the sport for nearly an entire decade. These sorts of ‘disappointments’ are the nature of the sport; this year at the WCs, Bryan Clay looked on pace to possibly break the world record, when an injury forced him out. Completing 10 events at a superlative level of effort is actually quite difficult to do without either causing injury to oneself, or committing a tactical error SOMEWHERE (as Dan did).

Whew. Sorry for the rant…. I love that sport (and hope to compete in it again, on the Masters T&F circuit), so I got to stick up for my boys.

QOTD: Never had a Barolo (yet). *whimper*

QOTD: Yes, I’ve had a few, maybe two or three during my time in culinary school. Of course, being bombarded with over 100 wines to taste in less that three weeks, one can lose track. Now that I have to pay for the wines that I try borolo can be a little out of my price range.

I am surprised at how many have not tried a barolo, I hate to admit you were correct in your assumption GV.
Barolo is the predominant wine in my cellar.

QOTD.I am almost embarrassed but I have the 2000 Ceretto,I wasn’t planning on trying any for a number of years but after today’s episode my have to rethink and ease into them.
My favorite is probably the 1983 Luciano Sandrone but I have a son of the same vintage which may color my judgement. The times we have shared one are some of the happiest family memories I carry with me.
I would HIGHLY RECOMEND, for any of you younger vayniacs to lay down a few bottles from your children’s birth year and the year you were married. It’s history in a bottle…
Oh, back to the QOTD the 1995 Le Vigne Sandrone is a heart stopper too.

Gary, Jeff George called me and wanted me to tell you that he’s here for you. You know, if you need an extra quarterback or anything.

I picked up a Barolo last fall I think, but it’s still in the cooler–waiting until I can find myself proper supplies for a quality osso buco. So no, I haven’t had one per se.

QOTD: Barolos are one of my faves, even though I haven’t had any high-end ones yet. I have a couple of bottles of 1996 Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo Le Brunate from a previous WLTV episode. Haven’t popped one yet because it may be a little young.

Hey Gary, I actually got to taste the 2000 Oberto Albarella with my wine buyer, the vendor and either the importer or someone associated with the winery, whatever he was Italian, and we tasted them in little 2oz plastic cups and I remember it being really pretty and we were in the process of bringing it in, but ended up taking Oberto Barbera D’Alba which was very nice also as a QPR, but now I’m really gonna try to push bringing the Barolo into our shop. So that and another one of Oberto’s Barolos and another one I tasted at work were the first Barolos I ever tasted. I have never bought one, and today was the first time I have got the chance to taste a Brunello, and a 2001 none the less, and it was pretty good but I think I like the 2003 Corte Alla Flora Vino Nobile de Montelpuciano better than the Brunello I tried and it was only $22. Great wines though. Right now I re-visting my old school wine days of last year and drinking the beautiful delicious Cali New World Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir with 78% Pinot and 22% Mondeuse grapes which is quite intriguing. Such a delicious wine. I give it 91+, not as good as the 2005 Fixin I had last week which was free and a 93+ and a baby.

QOTD: Never had a barolo, GV. In fact, the only time I’ve heard it mentioned was on ‘Sex and the City’ (Yes, I watch the re-runs on TBS, and I dont care who knows about it), when Carrie was dating the Russian guy. He kissed her after she drank a sip of barolo and commented “Yes, I think we go with the barolo for dinner tonight.” I’m less of a man for knowing that quote, arent I. I dont care.

pretty clever software. It deleted my entry as “mikeyra”. QOTD, I love Barolos, but haven’t tried a real high-end one. I have two bottles of 1996 Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo Le Brunate from a previous WLTV episode. Haven’t popped one yet because I read that they still may be a little young.

QOTD – I can’t remember having a Barolo. They have somehow seemed intimidating to me for a few reasons – including the price, the necessity to decant, and the need to cellar them for a few years before enjoying them. I guess I have to start seeking them out more…

  150. October 31, 2007

    ChrisK

the best barolo I have ever tried wasn’t even a barolo per se – the 2001 Gaja “Sperss” – 96% nebbiolo, 4% barbera, which puts it outside the DOCG of Barolo… unbelievable. A little more affordable is the 2001 Prunotto Barolo which is showing unbelievably right now.

  151. October 31, 2007

    Kdawg

we need more barolo and brunello episodes, man I always say that after you do a barolo episode, :) . Yes, I’ve had barolo’s(though I haven’t had any barberesco’s ironically). I absolutely love them, unfortunetly they aren’t easy on the wallet. I just love the flavor profiles that they bring and they are so interesting. I’ve only had young ones though, so I’m looking forward to 2012 when I pop my first 99 Scavino.

QOTD: my favorite barolo is the 01 La Spinetta. That one just really opened my eyes big time on barolo and has really made me want to drink more of them when I get the chance

QOTD: 1998 Teo Costa Monroj. I think a lot of it has to do with the story behind it like you said a couple episodes ago. We have a friend whose daughter used to live in Italy and I gave him $25 to have her bring us a bottle of wine when she came back to visit. She gave the Teo Costa wine to him to give to us and I put it in the cellar. Last year my daughter was supposed to have a graduation party but we had to postpone it because she was sick. We live in St. Louis and our friends had moved to Louisville, KY. Since they hadn’t said they were coming we assumed they weren’t so we didn’t call them to tell them it was postponed. The door bell rang and there they were! It turned out great because we got to sit with just them and their granddaughter and catch up on things. Our daughter was feeling better and joined us as well. I remembered the wine and popped it open. It was fantastic! We sat there drinking the wine and talking for the next 2 hours! Second place goes to an older vintage (don’t remember exactly) Vietti barolo that also has a story but I’ll save that for later.

  153. October 31, 2007

    In Vino Veritas

QOTD: I haven’t tried Barolo. They, at least the ones on today’s episode, appear to be out of my price range. My palate is still developing. Only recently have I come to appreciate red wine, so I don’t think I’m ready for this wine at these prices. If there’s a really good Barolo under $20 I’d love to give it a try. I totally dig on the “try everything” philosophy.

  154. October 31, 2007

    Greg B

Thanks Big G, Love the episode. I’m giving it 93 points, could have gone a little higher, but it only had really 1 good QPR.

QOTD: Yes and it’s Parusso Barolo Mariondino 2000.

  155. October 31, 2007

Never had Barolo but anyway I’m new to wine drinking,
I was looking at the prices and it seems a little high for my wallet.
im in the under $20 range :) maybe later I will get me one to try it out.

  156. October 31, 2007

    Jake K

I’ve never tried barolo but from what ive seen today and other episodes on this wine, you make it sound very intriguing and interesting. Your wine recommendations are usually right on the money. You Definitely inspire me to try different kinds of wine that i have usually pass by without looking at during my trips to the local wine shop. Keep up the good work gary

    MagnumGourmet

Have only had one barolo in my life. It was a bottle of Pio Cesare 1998 at a restaurant in Las Vegas. Talk about kicking up the price point…

Will have to have some more. Have always enjoyed chianti and would like to try more Italian wines. Also, I have had a number of nebbiolo wines from both Washington and Oregon that have been very tasty. So I figure with the extra knowledge of the grape from the wine makers in Italy, it should be that much better.

  158. October 31, 2007

    Jsuarez

Great show. I have never had a barolo but will now. I have my dayoff tomorrow and will take a trip to Spec’s here in Houston. I will probably try a lower end bottle (under $20) and if the descriptions are tantalizing enough maybe even a $50 one. I am always ready to try new things.

QOTD: OF COURSE! ONE OF MY FAV WINES ON EARTH :)

thank you Gary, I love this kind of episodes! :)

QOTD: Gary you nailed it. I haven’t had a Barolo yet, though I have wanted to try one. The biggest issue is the price they are and not wanting to buy a “loser.” When I only purchase 3-5 wines a year that are over $30 due to my limited means, I want to know that I am buying a wine I will thoroughly enjoy. I will seek out the Oberto, but find that wine prices in Hawaii are often significantly higher than on the mainland. Thanks again Gary.

I’ve had several, but not in a way that I could really dig in and appreciate them. (Have enjoyed them at large high-end wine tastings). I’ve never bought one….would consider buying tha Albarella now, though.

QOTD: I have only had a handful of Barolo’s but of them my favorite one to date was probably the 1997 Stefano Farina Reserva that I had with a little Taleggio about two weeks ago. I have a half dozen 2001’s stored away in the cellar for a few years down the road…and I am very excited to see how they progress in the years to come.

Now can we expect to see a 2000 Barbaresco show? Or maybe a 2002 Burgundy show…I like seeing some aged wines on the show. Thanks for a truely great show…and all of your effort to keep so many of us entertained. Good luck in buying the Jets….

    BAROLO!!!

QOTD: I’ve unfortunately only had one Barolo, but given my modest, recent college grad budget, I’m lucky I’ve had one at all. We sell it at the Italian restaurant in which I work, and it’s a 2003 by Stefano Farina.

  165. October 31, 2007

    antony

I used to work for an old school movie producer – with an old school attitude to the expense account… which meant that he wasn’t really producing movies any more. Anyway, two or three days a week we would lunch in a little Italian restaurant around the corner from the office and drink a bottle or two or sometimes three of barolo. The food was okayish – I think they were really Turks pretending to be Italian – and the Barolo was not so expensive – though still much better than anything I was used to – and I still don’t have the most developed palate… but I can instantly recognise Barolo from merest sniffy-sniff-sniff. It brings back great memories and makes me think I should dig out my old pal again.

QotD: Nope, never had a Barolo but it is high on my list [along with Amarone]. Hell, I had my first real Brunello di Montalcino last night. I’m sure there are many others like me who simply can’t afford to throw the dice [like you said] on expensive wines except for special occasions.

QOTD: It’s a bit on the pricy side for me to be familiar enough to nominate a favourite. The ones I had, I wasn’t bowled over by, to be honest, but I came to them with very high expectations from some big Borolo fans. I intend to drink more of it and get to know it on my own terms…when I’m rich!

  170. October 31, 2007

    Eben

QOTD – I don’t drink enough Barolo’s to have a favorite really, but I do like the 2003 Damilano Barolo for one that is reasonably affordable ($23-ish). I have a 2001 Damilano that I am waiting to have so I’m hoping that will be my new favorite. All in all these wines just get a little too pricey for me to drink them on a regular basis.

  171. October 31, 2007

Have been drinking and buying Barolo since the ’70s. Checked my records [something I highly recommend for new wine lovers – just throw some notes, labels etc. in a folder and keep it somewhere) and found I had 4 bottles of Ceretto Bricco Rocche 1978, paid $14/b when released in ‘83 and drank it over the next 10 – 15 years. Found it to be phenomenal. Th ‘78 vintage was rated 20/20 by the NYTimes back then. This was the price point for these wines at that time so you can see they have held their value over time. As a comparison Ch. Cos D’Estournel ‘78 was $17/b and Ch. Lynch Bages $20/b, rated 18/20 NYT – compared to their 2005s at $185 to > 200/b. Haven’t had many of the more recent vintages lately but did have the 2001 Rivetto Giulin which was OK – for newcomers to barolo who don’t want to spend a lot this is available at WL for about $30 – a good starter, ready to drink now for barolo.

All time favorites thus far have been the ’78s of Ceretto, Giacosa and Contratto. HOpe to have some new favorites with the 2000 or 2001s.

LOVE LOVE the Barolo – the king of Italian grapes always awesome…from the first time I tasted one I fell in love with it!!!

QOTD: Prunotto Bussia 2004-fabulous nose, very floral. Have a special memory of this wine so it adds to the flavor!!!

Like the rough look your sporting these days!!

Great episode. Unfortunately I am in the same boat as most who have posted, haven’t had the pocket book to support trying many Barolos, but I DO love them. Very complex. A symphony in the mouth.

My only experience with Barolo was when I got the chance to taste a Ceretto Barolo and Barbaresco at a wine event here in HK.

Great episode! Barolo became my favorite wine about the time the 1995’s were released. QOTD: My favorite Barolo is Bruno Giacosa, but there are many more that I love, such as Ceretto, Conterno Fantino, Pio Cesare, and Sandrone. I like the “traditionalist” style the best, but don’t have a serious objection to the “part traditionalist/part modernist” style. However, I do not like to smell or taste obvious oak in Barolo.

I’ve had some Barolo’s over the years…none of which I can honestly say I remember any specifics about. But…because of the higher price for a good barolo….your show is the savior! Yes, I want to try a GOOD Barolo, but, like many others, I don;t want to simply roll the dice!! Thanks for providing some info on some good ones!!

I had one recently that was a bit young – a 2002 – at Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen in Walla Walla, WA (on a whim). My boss asked 3 of us, Barbera or Barolo? – I immediately said Barolo, to which he replied, “you have expensive taste.” But he got it anyway! I have had one or two others – not recalling any names right now. . . when you work in a restaurant in wine country people offer you wine to taste all the time. Anyway we should have decanted it, it was tasty, but not life changing.

I have had, I think two, Barolos until I had the one that got me hooked….2001 Principiano Ferdinando Barolo Boscareto. Usually sells for about $59 at one liquor store by me. They had it on sale for $43 a few weeks ago……NICE. Haven’t seen it at wine libary though. I thought that was the bomb until I got a 1999 Azelia Barolo San Rocco…even better. Barolos has to be my second favorite type, second to amarones.

Recently (3 weeks ago) had a 1997 Giovanni Manzone Barolo Le Gramolere Reserva-it was like being touched by the hand of God–or some higher epiphany deity of your choice! Love barolos, and like burgundy, seek them out in the wine stores every day I have off work. Great show-thanks for trying some big hitters of a vintage that I spent too much on, but have been patient.

Great show and some fantastic advice for up and coming wine geeks; I am one and (thankfully) was told of barolos ten years ago…have been collecting and drinking them ever since…

However, I have seen some at Total Wine (Cherry Hill & Delaware) for under $25. But I’m hesitant to try those. Have had one or two Barolos, none have stuck yet, the cellar has exactly zero. Recently I tried a Barbaresco that I enjoyed: Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2003. I don’t quite know the difference between Barbaresco and Barolo, both use nebbiolo, so is it a regional diff, or is it a production difference. I’m sure I could google search it, but I’m feeling lazy today.

I got very lucky and my local market sold me 2 1997 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Calamandrana for $4.99 each. I used my handy dandy Pocket PC Wine Guide and saw that the values were somewhere around $33 so I picked up the last 2 and drank 1. Nice floral notes with a rich ruby red color. I sipped this wine for close to 20 minutes and every taste had a different aspect to it. Blackberries, chocolate, cherries. It was fantastic. I look for good deals like this on Barolo as I can but not easy.

    Thanx Gary

    Great episode GV.

I have had a few barolos and I have been big fans of all of them. My first experience with Barolo was at Da Benito’s in Union. They have a really good wine list over there, and you can find some under-priced italian gems mixed in with some overpriced CA cabs. I had a ‘98 Pio Cesare Barolo for like 65 bucks a couple of years ago that really impressed me. I ended up meeting pio boffa at wine library a year or two ago and he signed my a bottle of his 2001 barolo that i bought. i look forward to popping it in a couple of years.

I Love Barolo! I have a cellar full of them, mostly 2000 and 2001, so none that old. My favorite has been 1998 Mauro Molino Barolo Vigna Conca. I had this for my anniversery at Coach Insignia, in Detroit. Gorgeous nose on this wine.

Watched this today and had bought some of the 2000 Bricco Rocche ‘Brunate’ and was inspired by Gary to open a bottle tonight with dinner — very good wine and half the price of the Bricco Rocche.

Really was getting good when we finished off the bottle! Almost Pinot like with a very nice ’sniffy sniff’. First glass was lacking but it turned excellent as it warmed up. My wife thought it would have been a great match for fish — maybe the fruit in the 2000 showed through.

Thanks Gary I would have probably waited another 5 years before trying the first bottle without WLTV.

Barolo’s have long been my favorite, but they are just too high in cost for me–when I see a bargain, I snap it up, and haven’t been disappointed yet. I’ve made a few converts and we all lament the prices. Thanks for trying them.

  244. November 3, 2007

A little cheaper than Barolo – try some Barbaresco – Nebbiolo grape from Piedmont region. Not as much structure, but more enjoyable as a great casual wine. Barbarescos are much better bets than Burgundies for the price.

First great Barolo I had was a 1989 Ceretto Bricco Rocche. The Barolo we ordered at the restaurant was nowhere to be found, so they gave us the Ceretto for the same price. I think we paid $80 about 10 years ago – it was totally worth it. I later got into the wine distributor game for Italian wines. One of the wines I view as transformational, along with a 1982 Domain Leflaive Puligny Montrachet out of Magnum…Awesome.

  248. November 5, 2007

    Vercingetorix

My first Barolo was in April 2006, and it woke me up to what wine could be. Chocolate, tobacco, earth, leather – I was blown away. Never had I tasted any wine so complex, so aromatic, or so pensive. At the time, I didn’t even know enough to write down what it was. All I remember is that it was a 1997 which was bought in Italy.

  249. November 6, 2007

Barolo is my favorite wine. I’ve had this discussion with my wife several times. She prefers Barbaresco, I prefer Barolo, the King of wines.

I got hooked when we lived in Milan and visited Piemonte every month or two. My favorite is the 1995 Marialunga from Cascina Bruni, although the 1997 was outstanding as well. (Cascina Bruni also makes an outstanding Barbera). I still have a bottle in the cellar waiting to be opened. The 1997 Barolo Cannubi from Produttori di Barolo is quite good also. While my budget constraints are such that I cannot afford one of the big names (or even purchase good ones here in the states), these have been outstanding finds and values.

I can see the hills of Barolo from my one of my bedrooms. The Barolo Castle is a must visit…. with the wine tastings and the history and the cork screw museum near by, I would say it is a wine lovers dream. Not a cheap wine even if produced next door but still a wine worth exploring. This year 2007 is going to be a very good year. That is what the producers say at first glance….I guess we will know for sure in 5 years time…

whaddaya know I want to get into Barolos and my friends at WLTV have a couple of episodes for me to watch!! You guys rock.

QOTD: Just had an 03 Michele Chiarlo Barolo, and I will definitely say it intrigued me more than anything else. Nebbiolo is such an interesting grape. Have had a Gaja Conteisa, and just recently the Gaja Sito Moresco, and I’m definitely getting hooked on the Nebb.

GV – I’ve got a lot of Barolos in my cellar and have been drinking them for many years. I’ve made several trips to the Piedmonte and have to say it is by far the best wine region to visit. All of Italy is crazy about wine but this place is over the top! Italian wines and especially Barolos are made to go with food. The truffles and earthy flavors of the Langhe match perfectly. Truffle season and harvest are in October, go, you will never regret it. Once you try a Barolo and you truly study them, you’ll always love them.

QOTD: Best Barolo I’ve ever had is a toss up between a 1997 Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc and 2001 Roberto Voerzio La Serra.
