Sadly I have not tried a Barbera even though I have been trying different wines and expanding my wine horizons. The only thing I’m waiting for is to come across a Barbera now.

I love the Italian wines expecially the ones from Sardinia (Argiolas).
All the “B’s” should be tried but the more expensive ones are fantastic.
Will give Barbera a try, but only from Italy. Gary, you have saved me
more and expanded my palet more than any other.
    GREAT EPISODE !!

YOU ROCK!! So glad to see the old GV back and pumped!!!

Will seek out the Massolino…love the dark & juicy!!!

QOTD: YES YES love the wines from that region..been stuck in Italy for a while now, can’t think of a better place to drink wine!!! They are fabulous…never have been let down by any of them. Opened a Ripasso Valpolicella last night and can’t stop thinking about.

Your the best GV!!!! Want the big ass glass for sure!

Gary – Loved the swirl thing you did with the Massolino. My suggestion – hold all the wines up like that. The light on the white wall in the background really brought the color out in the wine. Also, sounds like I should really try a Barbera. Can’t wait.

Loved the Barbera show. Three good wines that that doesn’t happen to often

QOTD: No, do I want one, yes. Now all I have to do is find one.

GREAT GREAT GREAT EPISODE. QOTD: not yet, and what am I waiting for? Gotta go find one tonight. I have ADORED Italian wines when they’re dark and thick and tannic, but I’ve also had a lot of thin light acidic vinegar crap coming out of Italy too, so I’ve tended to do more of my ‘exploring’ in Spain & Portugal & Chile & Argentina, which are seldom disappointing. Italian wines in my price range are much more of a gamble, and disappoint me far too often, so that’s probably why I haven’t tried a Barbera yet. But these sound like ones I’d enjoy, so now I have a recommendation I can trust. Gonna go find one of these TO-NIGHT.

Nice with some northern Italian wine since I had so many this monday on the Gambero Rosso thing.
Love the area and Barbera and Nebbiolo and truffels (it’s that time of year).
Found the Fontanafredda here in Sweden for $10, so i will buy !

    QotD: Yes lots of them.
I’m waiting for my Chicago / NYC trip in januari !

BARBERAS!! YES- thank you for introducing this often-less-than-appreciated Italian grape to the VAyniacs!

QOTD: I’ve only tasted one or two Barberas at the Italian ristorante at which I work, and unfortunately, the by-the-glass selection that we offer of this varietal have only added to the unfortunate reputation of Barbera as being a lighter, acidic, forgettable version of Multipulciano or Barolo. I have yet to taste a solid wine from this category at a modest price point, but along with my quest for a solid & affordable Docetto, I’ve not ye given up on seeking out a Barbera for myself! Thanks again, BIG G.!!

We actually do a really good desert styled Barbera at Bonny Doon. I don’t think I have ever had a traditional Barbera though.

    Great episode Gary!

Yes I like Barberas, I think the best I’ve had was Elio Altare Barbera d’ Alba. I would drink the Barbera with a nice gnocchi with wild mushrooms and truffle oil. yum yum!

haha after the big rant he tastes the wine and actually swallows! That’s the first time I have ever seen him drink instead of spit. “its good to drink wine”
    nice compliment

ABSOLUTELY I’ve had Barbera, love the stuff, in fact last year I got really high on some 1996 vintage Barbera from the Oltrepo Pavese region in Lombardia. And to those who say Barbera can’t age well, I say HUMBUG! (Check Winespectator, every Barbera review has a “drink now” recommendation for even the highly scored ones – PHOOEY!) I like it old-school, w/little or no oak aging, and real tobacco and earth coming through, and it WILL go 10+ years!

And here I thought they would all be sold out, but not quite.

Yes, the last WOTM on the forum was a Barbera. Nice enough stuff. And I have this bottle of California barbera that I am not quite sure what to make of, but it’s 8 bucks at the grocery down the street, so it’s got that going for it.
