yes, I’ve had barbara. Spinetta makes some good ones, though most over $20 I think. love em.
I’m all about barbera and also dolcetto now. I’ll throw in Cahors as to round out my trio of underrated wines (even though the last one is french.) How ’bout a cahors episode?

QotD: Yes but admittedly it was a California Barbera. It was damn tasty, though. Will definitely look up Italian Barbera next time I’m purchasing

QOTD: I’ve only had Barbaras at wine tastings. I’ll have to get one for dinner.
When you come to dinner does everyone lock their cats up? They should.

This is what the Thunder Show should be about. Wine wine wine…

I have had one Barbera (Technically I had two of these at a restaurant)

1998 Icardi Barbera d’Alba Suri di Mu vineyard. Paired with osso buco. Remember it being very earthy. Great stuff.

    Need to have some more.

  20. November 8, 2007

    Alex Haag

Live cats? So that’s what those guys in Italy are eating…

QOTD: Nope, haven’t had a Barbera. And what am I waiting for? Where do I start? Time in my schedule to see American Gangster, this semester to end, oh, and this weekend to begin!

Throw the Vietti Tre Vigne in the bunch as well – all fabulous. Barberas, Barolos and exceptional Chiantis just make me proud to be an Italian-American. Some of the best sub-$20 juice you can get out there.

  24. November 8, 2007

    Shane

Ok, now that I watched….QOTD: No, not that I know of. I was waiting to get a nice live cat meal lined up to pair it with, but apparently I could go with something like Inky Spaghetti.

Your Knicks board cracks me up. I just feel sorry for you. Jets and Knicks. Glutton for punishment. Come down to Texas and we can cheer of the Cowboys and the Mavs. Get a taste of that sweet victory.

Was reading this article today (http://scienceblogs.com/cortex/2007/11/the_subjectivity_of_wine.php) and it made me wonder whether you’re the only guy out there who knows a damn about wine these days. Keep up the good work GV!

  26. November 8, 2007

Yes a couple from Amador Co. CA. and I liked them I guess I need to try some Italian Barberas as well.

Wow Gary, you were really on a roll today! I love Barbera, thanks for putting it back on my radar screen, it’s been gone too long.

Best one I ever had was a 98 Hastae Quorum. Not cheap ($75 retail) but a great barbera, loads of dark fruit although the acidity has started to fade recently on the wine. I think it has probably seen its best days by now.

  30. November 8, 2007

    Will G

Wow, can’t remember the last time you liked every wine in the episode. Nice!

QOTD: Never had a Barbera. I’ve been waiting for someone to yell and scream at me to try one…it’s just never happened.

Thanks for the episode Gary. Unfortunately, the Massolino sold out in three seconds flat, but I did get my hands on a few bottles of the other two.

QOTD: Yes, I’ve had Barbera D’Alba a few times at enotecas in the city, but most were not that great in my opinion. Looking forward to trying these out!

  40. November 8, 2007

    RandyB

I love Italian wines. Great ep!

QOTD: Are you kidding me? Take a look at my wine cellar. Those wines to the left of the long-term agers are over half barbera.

QOTD: p1) so far, the Barbera d’Asti by Vietti is one of my faves – Vietti also makes a nice Arneis.
p2) still waiting on you to ship to Washington. . . what is up with that?? show some love! You must think we are spoiled by our connection to Walla Walla, and therefore refuse to spoil us more. hmmph

    C-Fiddy

    Hey Gary,
Discovered your show last week. Been lurking since then, told a couple of friends to check you out. I’m addicted.
Anyway, Barbera! Yes. California State University Fresno has an Enology department that has been producing it’s own wines and most are fantastic. Even their $4 Tailgate Red is tasty on a weeknight. Seems like every year though, their Barbera is winning awards all over the state, so I’ve been drinking theirs, but now I’ll have to branch out to some of these. Hey how about a whole show on Fresno State? Check them out! http://www.fresnostatewinery.com

  44. November 8, 2007

    ev

Now Gary, how do you REALLY feel about the Massolino? No holding back now. qotd-yes

  45. November 8, 2007

    Scott

There isn’t a red wine from that part of Italy I haven’t enjoyed… barbera, dolcetto, nebbiolo, barolo.. Gary’s right… they’re all magnificent! I’ve been to Alba a couple of times while I was in college, I tried to bring home as many of these bottles as possible while managing to fit my clothes and books in my luggage. They are too good! Man I’m so glad to see these wines on your show!

  46. November 8, 2007

    Dr T from N. Carolina

Well, I’ve had Barbara d’asti, which I really like, and Barbara from California, which I haven’t. and, in this saw we learned what wine goes with raw cat. . . .

  47. November 8, 2007

    PASO WINO

Gary, Oh boy you were en fuego today. Great show.

QOTD: Yes, I have had a couple Barberas, but only from CA. I need to try some from their native land of the World Cup champs. Viva Italia!!! I am waiting for my girlfriend to get out of the shower so I can go eat some lunch. I am so hungry I am about to eat my arm.

    Thanks GV!!

  48. November 8, 2007

Dammit Gary!! Where’s the Michigan wines you mentioned on Monday? I’d better not be let down tomorrow…

QOTD: I’ve had a number of Barbera bottles before….though I can’t remember whether I’ve ever had any d’Alba bottles.

I know I’ve had plenty Barbera d’Asti before, though. Mixed results, but mostly decent in my experience.

  50. November 8, 2007

    PFORTY

    QOTD: YESSSSS!! And love it!

QOTD Part II: Waiting for my rehearsal to end so that I can have some wine!!!

    Hey Gary,

New Vaniac / Long time suffering fan Jets here… Great show! I’ve been trying to catch up on all the old episodes. Absolutely love the show – the energy, the commentary, the Jets bucket… The show is a great way to break up my day in the office. Can’t wait to get to the store and try out your recommended wines. Keep up the good work!

  52. November 8, 2007

    Jeeezzzz Gary !

I think I’m getting closer to my long requested Rosso Di Montalcino show.
Barbera Alba certainly does remind me of spring flowers— like Lilacs.
Makes me want to cook up some pasta and Meata Balls……
Next show try to show a little enthusiasm will ya.

QOTD: Had a Barbera last month as a part of the WLTV forums WOTM thing. Not quite my taste, but not horrible.

  56. November 8, 2007

    Bill H

So I’ve been lurking for about 5 months now and this episode got me excited enough to comment. Do more with the Italian wines, I don’t know too much about them but after watching I’ve tried a few lately and 4 out of 5 have been home runs. Also, wines for Thanksgiving?

    QOTD: Yes

  57. November 8, 2007

    QOTD: Yes, lots. Love ‘em.

  64. November 8, 2007

    Garret Nagle

    Gary.

Today’s episode is compelling me to go out and buy a Barbera d’ Alba right now. Today’s episode is one of the best, if not the best pre-taped episode. I haven’t had a Barbera because my palate has been having a field day in Rhone, and in particular, the wonderful summer home of corrupt Popes of the past.

Thanks again for keeping this going Gary. I just thought of a new analogy for you. GV is to the wine world what Ron Paul is to the entrenched political system of today in America.

You’re really going to like that, or hate what I just said, but it was from the hip.

Enjoy LA and get some shut eye before your health declines.

    Garret

  65. November 8, 2007

    KyleLikesTies

QoTD: Nope, never had barbera, although I’m very interested now. The “meaty” component sounds incredibly appealing … I am *usually* vegetarian, but I occasionally buy some meat, and I love the meat-juice-blood flavour (I usually can’t even wait until it’s cooked and eat some of it totally raw.) … -and- A wine that brings that along with dark fruits and excruciatingly-dark chocolate?!? Sign me up. What am I waiting for? The next time I go to buy wine!

  66. November 8, 2007

    Dominus

QOTD: Of course I’ve had the Barbie! Unfortunately, they are all sold out! Geez, I guess I need to go to my local COSTCO! :)

Great show, let’s go with Grenache for an episode. I’m having a Craneford right now which is quite yummy.

    Go Colts!

  67. November 8, 2007

    KyleLikesTies

P.S. I have to agree with everyone who’s praising this as one of the best episodes: It’s great to see you so enthusiastic … even when our friend the Oak Monster makes a cameo.

  68. November 8, 2007

    TomB.

Finally!!!!! A Barbera episode! QOTD: Yes, one from Cali, and several others from its homeland. It seems many american wine drinkers are missing out on these nice dry, sour cherry, food friendly reds. I’ve found a few good ones at Costco, interestingly enough. Sorry to plug a competitor, but your nice that way..

  69. November 8, 2007

    cumpari

QOTD: Love the Barbera! Great show. I’ve had the Fontanafredda not too long ago. Outstanding bottle for the price.

How about a New World Barbera show? There are some good ones coming out of Washington — Woodward Canyon and Yellow Hawk, both located in the Walla Walla Valley.

  70. November 8, 2007

    Badger Ann

If I’ve ever had Barbera, it’s been so long ago that I’ve forgotten what it was like. I guess I’m waiting for my next shopping trip to my local wine merchant!

  71. November 8, 2007

    TimF

    QOTD: Absolutely.

  72. November 8, 2007

I’ve had a decent Barbera from Michele Chiarlo and a very good one from Prunotto.

  73. November 8, 2007

    Deano

Great episode gary I think i might seek all three of these out they all sound great!!

    QOTD:
-Havent had one yet and I dont know why I havent :(

  74. November 8, 2007

    Nathan L

AWESOME! It’s great to see an episode with no disappointments. QOTD: I love barbera! Piedmont is probably my favorite wine region. I can’t think of another region in the world with the combination of world class wines and values found in piedmont. Keep spreading the word because barolos, barbarescos, dolcettos, barberas, and even ribolla giallas are all some of the best, and most unique, wines around!

  75. November 8, 2007

    Dave Canada

I’m tired……feel your 120 from yesterday but have a killer tasting tonight and saturday!!
QOTD- Yes…..for you to make it up to Canada…

  76. November 8, 2007

    A-Gar

QOTD1: Never had it, but plan to now. This is why I love your show.

QOTD2: I am waiting for another double-blind tasting. Get them to pick out some really interesting stuff for you to try. Maybe even (dare I say it?) some Yellowtail, just to quiet all the people who think it is “not that bad”.

Loved the show, keep it up.

  77. November 8, 2007

    Rice

QOTD: Barbera – Boeger.. scared the hell outta me cuz I think it was corked… gonna have to buy a real barbera from Italy ;)

What I’m waiting for?… what else but CHRISTMAS!!! Wine for everyone!

  78. November 8, 2007

    Palmer

QOTD: I had a 2005 Molino Barbera d’Alba a while ago that was absolutely phenomenal. Velvety mouthfeel, lush dark fruit, really nice wine – I ordered a glass of it at first, then went on to order and drink two bottles with my girlfriend and another couple with dinner. I’m on the Barbera boat for sure.

Best episode in a little while I think; Barbera seemed to really spike your energy level.

  79. November 8, 2007

    JimmyP

Another lurker coming out of the closet…been watchin’ for about 4 months and lovin’ every espisode! I’ve never had Barbera…but am now very compelled to try it!

  80. November 8, 2007

    JonE

G-Man you gotta pop some beta-blockers, you might hyperventilate the next time.

QOTD: Ofcourse Barbera, she tasted so good. Pretty, perfumey, and easy going down.

QOTD2: I am waiting for bigger allocations. So I don’t always get the “what the #$%k am I gonna do with 2 bottles huh?!! Thats just a #$%king waste of time..” Ahh the biz, it’ll drive yah to drink.

  81. November 8, 2007

    John Witherspoon (J DUB)

QOTD #1: YES – LOVE THE BARBERA

    QOTD#2: NOTHING!

  84. November 8, 2007

    Craig MacDonald

QOTD: No, never had a Barberra. But you can bet it’s already on the list for my next WL order! Thanks for the heads up!

  85. November 8, 2007

    DG

QOTD: NO, waiting so I can legally drink.

  86. November 8, 2007

    Kristen

“It’s nice to drink wine that isn’t Yellowtailed.” Hear hear, GV, I concur with your statement. And now I feel like I am the one that should bring wine to parties and family gatherings so I am not subjected to Yellowtail or Beringer (people who are well meaning, but not too educated in the wine world…I’ll recommend your show)! But I dunno, I can’t quite recommend live cat to my family or friends! :o )

QOTD: Yup, I’ve had 2 Barbera D’Albas during a Piedmont tasting at work (us employees get to booze too- and for free! Plus there was a Dolcetto in the tasting). I need to get into them more, but there’s so much wine at work to try. I’m truly working on it!

  87. November 8, 2007

    Ole Ole

YES! Tried the LaGhersa Barbera d’Asti (superiore) Vignassa, and loved it. It was 2000 vintage. Tasted like some good Bordeaux blends of twice the price. I agree with Gary… this stuff seemed to have wonderful balance of fruitiness and earthiness or vegetable flavors, and then a meat-juice or stew kind of mouthfeel (don’t recall a meat juice or bloody flavor).

Is this all recorded the same day (”Knicks”)? Gary’s mood or “explosiveness” is changing from flight (show) to flight so much so that is seems to be on different days.

    Cin-cin e ciao.

  88. November 8, 2007

    Cma82

LOVE Barbera…its actually dominating my modest cellar right now. Great wines at that price point. I was first introduced to them at Otto in NYC, they have one by the glass on the menu that I’m really in to.

  89. November 8, 2007

    SacramentoCharlie

QOTD: Have had some Cali Barbera but am really curious to try Italian.

  90. November 8, 2007

  91. November 8, 2007

Co-inkidinkally, I have a Barbera open on the kitchen counter right now (Calif.), and am drinking it as I watch this show.

Gary, you are so cranked up! Beta blockers would kill your joie du vin … just say no!

  95. November 8, 2007

    Kazi Indakwa

QOTD: Yes, Barbera is one of my favorites especially with pizza and pasta with red sauce.

aromatically interesting… AI! I like that.

  97. November 8, 2007

Squid ink? for real? Dude, you can eat and enjoy cheese for two weeks and take in less cholesterol than a plate of squid ink pasta. Go with the cheese. ; )

  98. November 8, 2007

    FJDR

QOTD: Yes, I like Barbera very much and I was wondering when you were going to do a show about it. Now I’ll stop wondering. Good show, keep up the good work.

  102. November 8, 2007

    Todd S

QOTD: Barbera d’Alba is a top 6 favorite of mine. That being said, it has been a while since I opened one. I probably only have a couple in the cellar right now. I will open one soon.

  103. November 8, 2007

    question

I recently went to a tasting at my local wine shop, where the owner said Barbera is notable for its low tannins. I loved the wines, but wanted to know if the wines tried on this episode were unusually high in tannin for Barbera, or were they at the characteristic level.

  104. November 8, 2007

    Greite

Great show today, Gary. It’s good to see you so excited about all 3 wines.

QOTD: Yes, I’ve had a barbera, but it’s been quite a while, and I rather forgot about them.

    Thanks for the reminder.

QOTD: The 04 Giacomo Conterno Barbera D’Alba (I forget the designation) is really awesome, but a little pricey. I’ve had a couple of Barbera D’Asti, which seem to be lighter and a little easier to drink, plus they were less expensive.

Great stuff, but I’ve never had a D’Alba, lookin forward to one. Hey Gary, when are you gonna rock some wines made by winemakers whose names are Gary like Gary Farrell and the such? just a thought…And when are you gonna do a Jumilla/Monastrell episode!!! And here I thought they would all be sold out, but not quite.

Yes, the last WOTM on the forum was a Barbera. Nice enough stuff. And I have this bottle of California barbera that I am not quite sure what to make of, but it’s 8 bucks at the grocery down the street, so it’s got that going for it.

    Craig Owen

ABSOLUTELY I’ve had Barbera, love the stuff, in fact last year I got really high on some 1996 vintage Barbera from the Oltrepo Pavese region in Lombardia. And to those who say Barbera can’t age well, I say HUMBUG! (Check Winespectator, every Barbera review has a “drink now” recommendation for even the highly scored ones – PHOOEY!) I like it old-school, w/little or no oak aging, and real tobacco and earth coming through, and it WILL go 10+ years!

BARBERAS!! YES- thank you for introducing this often-less-than-appreciated Italian grape to the VAyniacs!

QOTD: I’ve only tasted one or two Barberas at the Italian ristorante at which I work, and unfortunately, the by-the-glass selection that we offer of this varietal have only added to the unfortunate reputation of Barbera as being a lighter, acidic, forgettable version of Multipulciano or Barolo. I have yet to taste a solid wine from this category at a modest price point, but along with my quest for a solid & affordable Docetto, I’ve not ye given up on seeking out a Barbera for myself! Thanks again, BIG G.!!

GREAT GREAT GREAT EPISODE. QOTD: not yet, and what am I waiting for? Gotta go find one tonight. I have ADORED Italian wines when they’re dark and thick and tannic, but I’ve also had a lot of thin light acidic vinegar crap coming out of Italy too, so I’ve tended to do more of my ‘exploring’ in Spain & Portugal & Chile & Argentina, which are seldom disappointing. Italian wines in my price range are much more of a gamble, and disappoint me far too often, so that’s probably why I haven’t tried a Barbera yet. But these sound like ones I’d enjoy, so now I have a recommendation I can trust. Gonna go find one of these TO-NIGHT.

Gary – Loved the swirl thing you did with the Massolino. My suggestion – hold all the wines up like that. The light on the white wall in the background really brought the color out in the wine. Also, sounds like I should really try a Barbera. Can’t wait.

My wine friends that write for the WSJ once wrote in their column that “anytime you see a Barbera D’Alba, pick it up and you won’t be disappointed.” I am fairly new to the world of wine but I have followed this advice many times and have always been happy that I did! My favorite was the Oberto Barbera D’Alba Giada ‘01 that I bought from the Wine Library last year. I opened it one night not expecting anything more than a decent bottle to enjoy with dinner – but was blown away by the beautiful flavors and old world charm. Unfortunately, I only had the one bottle and have not found another since then. To this day, when I am browsing in the local wine store, I still heed the advice: anytime you see a Barbera D’Alba (they’re not that hard to find) pick one up and you will NOT be disappointed. Like you said, Gary, how often can you go 3 for 3?

Barbera rocks and deserves to be better known… We all know Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti, but I recently tried a Barbera del Monferrato that rocked VERY hard… It was from Azienda Agricola ACCORNERO… Try thier Bricco Batista 2004 : pure blue and black fruit, yet so lively and balanced… A real bomb!!

QOTD: Yep, I’ve had a Barbera from my home province of British Columbia, Canada. My first reaction was, “well, this is an odd taste.” Then it dawned on me that it was just plain wrong. Suspicions aroused, I did a little looking into the characteristics of corked wine, and they certainly matched what I was tasting. First time I had one of those. I tried the wine again (new bottle, of course) and very much enjoyed it. After Gary’s enthusiastic response I figure I need to try some of the old world versions. Quite the run of speech on the middle wine. Great show!

You have to come to Alba and drink it here… together with the local cuisine that complements each other so well…
It is a real pleasure to sit in the vineyards that the grapes were harvested from and drink the wine with the man or family that produced it. You can not say the same for many producers in the world. Here it is mostly family run, small productions. The produdtion is less science and more an art. These days with large producers there is more science in producing a good wine… and less of the art. The good thing about the wines here, is that it is still old school.
There are loads of great wines that just don’t make it to your table in the US…the production is too small…. but it sure does get consumed localy.
Great Episode and I agree with you about those wines.. and they really great value for money.. and that is just one of the good wines to come out of Alba… Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Barolo made from the Nebbiolo grape is….well will just have to let you decide that on your own.

I just got back last night from 11 days in Piedmonte, Italy, including eights days in and around Alba at the white truffle fair. Our small group of 12 people had Barbera at least twice a day (lunch and dinner) along with Barbarescos and Barolos. White truffles with at least 1-2 courses at both lunch and dinner. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Italian wines in general, but especially Barbera in the last 7-8 years or so, have taken a quantum leap in quality. I have had earlier vintages of the Fontanafredda and the Clerico and love both of them. I will look for the massolino. I have had their Barolo, but not their Barbera. I agree with you that Barbera has become a screaming value in really, really good wine in the world today. Congratulations on hitting the trifecto today.

psst…uhm…Gary likes “juice from meat”. Which is totally cool if you *snicker* like juicy meat. Yeah, I’ve had Barbera. I’ve had CRAP ASS BARBERA!! Let’s call it C.A.B. and I’ve had really good stuff. Here’s the thing: think about it people, we have a HUGE area producing wines from (insert any wine producing area in the world). There will be great wines, shiety wines, good QPR wines, etc. That’s why this movement with the vayniacs is so cool. We realize this and don’t buy a Borgogne Pinot over a Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot because of the name brand shiat but we grab a bottle of that good Monterey county stuff cuz we expand our palates and know that’s how we find the gems, find what we like.

    Hi, Gary! Sneaky wines?

Great ep! Good call on the chestnut. According to Bastianich & Lynch’s Vino Italiano, Barbera d’Alba Superiore requires a minimum of 1 year in oak or chestnut barrels. Barbera d’Alba (whether Superiore or Normale) also requires 100% Barbera grapes, not 70%. Barbera d’Asti, Barbera del Monferrato, and Barbera di Piemonte all require a minimum of 85% Barbera. (By the way, the link for the Fontanafredda and the Wine Library page where it sends you both list the wine as Barbera d’Alba, but when you held up the bottle it said Piemonte, not Alba.)

One other thing about the Barbera grape is that it is very high in natural acidity (which is part of its food friendliness) but low in tannin. You commented a number of times that the wines were tannic. That is probably because of the wood treatment, since the grape itself doesn’t have a lot of tannin. You mentioned that the Oak Monster was peeking out of the Clerico. “Traditional” Barbera (i.e., prior to the 1980s, when Braida started using French barriques) was a much lighter wine.

I just had my first barbera while rewatching this old episode. It was 2004 Pozzi Barbera. It had some rich dark flavors — liquorish meets bakers chocolate. I like the tannins biting my tongue on the finish. This is real wine for 11 bones. I like it. I’ll probably buy a couple more Pozzis and a couple of other barberas. I liked your enthusiasm on the Massolono.
