QOTD – Aglianico, I’d never heard of that grape until I saw the episode a few months back, it got me into a whole bunch of Southern Italian wines.

Thanks for the straight talk about Beaujolais Nouveau. Tried it on Thursday myself. Yuk. Tired of hearing about the stuff. There is so much better Beaujolais out there for just a few dollars more, and so many alternate wines for the same price.

    Gary:
Congrats on all the great birthday gifts. You forgot to point out you got that shirt yesterday too. :-)
Anyway, great QOTD. You mentioned with the Coume Del Mas Schistes we need to write it down on a post it note, on your hand, text yourself, etc. For me, having the google notebook on my browser is awesome for this. Anyway, looking there now, at the top of my “GV shopping list” for my next wine buying binge is to try some Primitivo.

Here is a little poem about beaujolais:

    Brilliant cut and shiny,
    You prepare to accommodate,
    The liquid of the ground.
    The one which,
    Gathered in good season,
    Triturated carefully,
    You will release,
    A dress,
    A scent,
    A colour.
    You border the lips,
You will return in this body,
    You’re going to exhilarate .
    Like the one which,
Attracted by the girl in beauty,
    Will border its lips,
    Then roll up its dress,
    Feel its flower,
    Appreciate its colour,
    To finish in his body,
    Finally to,
    Make her head turn.

Black Pig Albarino and Sunday Morning SB are the two individual wines I never would have even known existed and LOVED without WLTV.
As far as varietals go, I admit it. Before WLTV I had tried 2 or 3 dolcetto’s and wasn’t impressed. I thought they were 8-10 dollar wines, that cost 15-20 bucks. After your dolcetto episode I gave them another shot and now they are some of my favorites. It goes to show you can’t make an assumption about a varietal from 2 examples.

Awesome show Gary! Thanks. I agree, I have been consistently underwhelmed by Georges DeBoeuf recently. Earlier years in 80s and 90s were the heyday.

GV – I have been watching the show for a month or so. It’s the latest in a year long wine education effort which has included a trip to Napa / Senoma (where I toured Sloan’s ultra exclusive winery by the way – an incredible experience), to barrel tasting at Dellile Cellars in WA state. I have fallen in love with Quilceda Creek and Leonetti, and discovered a fantastic winery in WA called Fielding Hills – they are making great wine. My neighbor owns two Italian restaurants in Seattle and has shared a lot of Italian wine and food with me which has been fantastic. Which brings me to the QOTD. I ordered a case of the Barbera D’Allba, 05, and broke open the first bottle last night. My wife and I loved it. I have also ordered some of the Frank Family Zin and will probably order up some of the Schistes reviewed today. I enjoy the show a lot. Thanks for the effort.

Question of the day…. We had never tried a Barbera unitil watching the “Thunder Show”, this evening we opened a Barbera D’Allba, 05 and it was spectacular. Thanks for helping to enrich our wine enjoyment Gary, we love watching your podcast.

    Your friend down under

Regardless of how beajolais tastes there is still a mystique about it. There is something appealing about a wine that get sent all over the world at midnight as fast as is possible to be consumed very quickly in Europe, China, Australia, America etc.
