I’m glad St. Julian is showing up. The vineyard is not far from my hometown, and I would pass it regularly on the way to my grandparents. The problem I’ve had with St. Julian is that make all those candy and fruit-type wines. You make me proud to give my home state another chance.

You love the factoid that St. Julian’s is located in Paw Paw, Michigan! :D

QOTD: 2005 Wolftrap – would have NEVER picked it up, but did so on your recco – have had half a case and it has been an absolutely STUNNING QPR every time. Just had one last night in fact. The complexity this wine brings for under 10 bones is incredible. Big UPs GV!

Went to Sherry Lehman to pick up a neutral red for a “smell off” I am hosting at my wine tasting group tomorrow night and Franc Debouf offered to autograph a bottle of beaujolais nouveau, so what the hey, I bought it. I like fruit juice.

Great show, glad to see you didnt go too hard last night beign the B-day and all.
QOTD I know it’s already been said, but the Black Pig Albarino, Loved and thanks to you I tried it.

    Lawrence Leichtman

Weird sound stuff in the begining. The last Beaujolias Nouveau I had was 2005 and I spit it out so fast I couldn’t imagine anyone fighting over it unless it was to get it to the dumpster. The number of wines I have tasted because of WLTV is huge. Probably 20 or more bottles of wines I had not tried and I liked most of the them. I think the biggest benefit was getting out of wine ruts more so than newer wines.

QOTD: Lindaflor Malbec. I really hadn’t givien Malbec a try before then.

You should ask another question: What wine have you stopped drinking since watching WLTV.

QOTD…. I’ll try just about anything now pre WLTV I just stayed with what I knew Merlots, Cabs ,Zins and Pinots now when we go to tastings I seek out new and different wines. Thanks

Nice show today, more mellow but still a good one. It’s no shocker you’re calmer after yesterday’s energy-blitzkrieg.

    Gary,

It’s a good thing that you intend to taste some more wine from Languedoc. Personally I’d be happy if you tasted the reds from Domaine Léon Barral in Faugères: Cuvée Jadis or Valinière. They rock!

Pillar Box Red, had it the past two nights with my girlfriend (did the whole cork, refrigerate overnight, then bring back to room temp with tepid water to drink the next night thing) but it was WAY better the second night, maybe this would have done well with decanting or letting it sit longer? anyway, pretty good bottle for pretty cheap.
Thanks for the shout out on Michigan wines, I have jogged past/ through one of the vineyards where they grow those very grapes, good to know they turned out well. But whats the score on that bottle?

QOTD: This was never on the show per se, but the Lopez Heredia Vina Tondonia Rioja Crianza Rose. The other wines you have done from Lopez Heredia got me interested in this producer, and before WLTV I probably would not have bought a rose.

  53. November 15, 2007

QOTD- I got a whole lot of wine I’ve never tried in route from wine library and I’ll let you know if those turn me around. But most recently, your Alamos Malbec recommendation got me looking more seriously at this grape.

  54. November 15, 2007

    A-Gar

Great show today. Definitely going to have to start “asking away”.

QOTD: Without WLTV, I may never have given white wines another chance. In the past I have not really liked/enjoyed/appreciated whites, but since watching this, I’ve tried a few that were recommended, and most were good. So thank you GV and WLTV, for expanding my knowledge, expanding my palate, and expanding my heart. (Is that too much?) :)

  55. November 15, 2007

    Simon D

I probably would have to say Dolcetto, although Albarino is probably a close 2nd. However, I LOVE both of these now! Both of which, I tried after seeing them on your show.

  56. November 15, 2007

    chenrys

Enjoyed the show. We would have opened our bottle of Michigan Riesling if we had checked what you were drinking first. It’s not the same one you tried but still encouraging.
Wish we could get orders shipped here….darn.

QOTD: Probably several wines but Primitivo most recently.

  57. November 15, 2007

    Orion Slayer

Whoa! My head is spinning with such variety of wines today. But I LIKE that feeling! I tried a couple Beaujolais Nouveaus today (neither were the George Douboef) and they were better than last year’s, to me. But then I like fruit bombs (and the Raiders.)

QOTD: I tried Pouilly Fuisse and really liked it. Before the show where you talked about it, I was turned off to Chardonay. Then I tried a pouilly fuisse and the funny thing is that it tasted more like the way I remember (and liked) Chardonnay to taste. Keep challenging us!

  58. November 15, 2007

    Mike L

Awesome show! I was enlightened and entertained.

QOTD: I have to admit Black Pig Albarino was an eye opener for me and my girlfriend. We tore that shiz up with some broiled fish and shrimp earlier in the month. Delish!

I think I has some shopping to do now…

    Gary-

Two questions. Is the St. Julian dry or off-dry? You didn’t mention it in the show, and I think it makes a difference in food parings.

Second, have you had any Beaujolais Nouveau that you liked? Aren’t they all pretty one-dimensional?

  61. November 15, 2007

    BrianS

I think Gary just regurgitated some wine!! Gary, you’ll have to teach us the art of tasting wine that way.

Excellent show GV! Thanks for answering my question on “Ask Gary”! I will go smell the hell outta those veggies!

QOTD: Temparnillo. I love that grape….plus the Albarino is amazing! That’s my new favorite go-to white wine!

  63. November 15, 2007

Gary, that’s weak sauce. Why do you always pick the absolute worst BN to taste? You guys must have a few others in stock. You believe in public humiliation?

QOTD: Actually, I don’t recall any in particular. I’m a relatively new vayniac, and I don’t get to buy wine all that often. You did turn me on to Argentine Malbec, however!

BTW, how do I get a nice custom avatar like some of you have? I haven’t been able to find that anywhere.

  66. November 15, 2007

Next time the Pax bug bites you have to try their Rose its fantastic, much darker in color than a typical Cali Rose. It’s basically baby Pax with a solid left hook.

QOTD: As someone said previously the Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rioja Crianza Rose 1995.
Your review was spot on, and the essences of tea in it were uncanny. Big ups G-Man.

  67. November 15, 2007

    CindyW

QOTD: I probably would have eventually tried these, but your descriptions encouraged me to get some sooner. Recently, I’ve fallen in love with sancerres — yum! I also was very curious to try pinotage after hearing you talk about the grape, and how stinky pinotage can be. So, when I was at a wine-tasting and a S. African pinotage was featured, I was prepared for the dirty garbage can smell…and a few sips later was raving about the deep, dark flavors in the glass. Very cool! :)

I like the way you describe the wines! I can almost smell and taste the wines from your description!
YES, there is such a thing as blueberry stew! Over here, we have something which we call blueberry soup but it’s more like a stew – it sounds like a delicious syrah!

    canadapete

QOTD-DISS – I went out and got a CdP (which I generally love)- Domaine font de Michelle, Cuvee Etienne Gonnet – which you put on pedestal and it was totally underwhelming! Very disappointed and missing some serious bucks. I entertained the idea, maybe a bad bottle, maybe too young, but in the end still not bring the thunder. I have your last chance to prove yourself in my cellar – the terlato shiraz-viognier which polarize you against RP – so I am really hoping you come through on that one.

  72. November 15, 2007

Had the Duboeuf while watching the ep.
Sorry G – you are way off. 67 points? That is a solid 72+ wine and I can see it maturing into a 73-74 point-type wine by next week.

QOTD: I went out and splurged on a bottle of ‘94 Dow’s, never expecting to notice a difference with the usual 30$ bottle of port. The result? Amazing!

    Keep up the great work.

    happy belated b-day!
QOTD:well i don’t believe you did this wine on WLTV but i would have never tried the Rhone Rebel 2005 Cotes du Rhone GSM if i had never watched your show…if it were not for you i would have never known about this fabulous wine store that is only 1 short hour from my house in nj and i would have never spoken to the kindest gentleman at wine library (and i’m sorry i don’t know his name) who took this $5.99 wine off the shelf and put it into my cart without my consent, promising that i would like it. well i did and heck, it’s cheap as hell too, which i love.

QOTD: That’s easy! The last six bottles I ordered from WL, which were also the first six I ordered, thanks to the fact that AZ was finally opened up to shipments and GV handed out a free shipping offer a couple of weeks back. I’m drinking the Nec-Otium Pinot Grigio right now, thanks to your glowing recommendation and I agree – an outstanding QPV.
Guess what I’ll be doing tomorrow. (Hint: it has to do with the next six bottles!)

QOTD: 2003 Ballast Stone Petit Verdot

For $10 (on free.winelibrary.com) that stuff was awesome. I just picked up some Ken Rasmussen PV from Wine.Woot! and I’m pumped about trying that. I’m slowly trying more French wines too, very excited to see a Bordeaux in the pack.

Thank you for the free shipping! I’m really trying to not buy any more wine this month but that Coume del Mas Schistes sounds right up my alley. Out of my normal price range but I’m going to go for it anyway.

You know, I’ve never had beaujolais nouveau before tonight and frankly, it tastes like dirty wet socks after a rainstorm. It’s even doing to my tongue what the wet socks do to my feet.

Oh well, I knew I probably wasn’t going to like it, and at least I know how wine can smell like socks now. :)

Since watching your show I have started trying wines from many more regions.
One of the wines which I tried because of the Wine Library TV is the Mabileau Bourgeuil St. Nicolas.
Love the wine. I enjoyed bothe the 2005 and the 2004.

I also started trying other Loire wines which I am not sure you reviewed. A great one I recently tried was the Jasnieres. Great quality for the price.

    Thanks Gary

Let go of the un-impressed traditions, 100% agreed! I tried Beaujolais one year and didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. Now I know how much value I can get with just 10 bones, I would not waste it on other Beaujolais like wines.. Thanks Gary and the WLTV.—I watch and I learn.. :-) .

Nice ep. A wine that was totally off my radar before your show was the Boudreaux Cabernet from Rob Newsom. I have 5 bottles of the ‘04 Cab in the cellar and loved the one we took out to dinner (review in the forums, corked and CT).

  101. November 15, 2007

Good show Gary. The St. Julian comes from my neck of the woods – the winery is just down the road from where I grew up! Thanks for showing some love to Michigan! QOTD: without WLTV, I never would have tried the Berco Do Infante Estremadura Reserva, and I never would have realized what a love affair with wine looks like! Keep it real.

  102. November 15, 2007

    Pastafari Pirate

QOTD: Oh, man, 2 dozen or 3 dozen great wines that I would’ve never tried — would’ve never even heard of — if it weren’t for WLTV. But I will narrow it down to one that I truly adore most, the greatest QPR ever, the kickassingest $20 wine in history, Castano Hecula.

#100 – The Lurkers only come out when you threaten to quit – and nobody shows up to say thank you for the free shipping? BUSH LEAGUE!!

Gary – great show, Hope the B-day went well, THANKS FOR THE FREE SHIPPING! The Fort Worth Jerks will be buying their Thanksgiving Tasting wine from you – we even got the Thanksgiving wine pack! (I’m getting the wristband – as long as I win the drawing)

Basically every bottle I have bought so far I wouldn’t have without the guidance of wine library!
As I sit here writting this I’m drinking the Villa Fanelli Primitivo Zeta which I actually like more than the Felline Primitivo Di Manduria 2005 which you rated higher – which just goes to show that you gotta listen to the taste profile and not the scores!

Oh by the way – before we cracked open the Villa Fanelli, we finished the Berco Do Infante Estremadura Reserva 2005 which you nailed right on the head!

Don’t worry – we don’t just buy the cheap stuff – we’re just testing to see if our palates can really tell the difference between high and low priced wines. So far we can, but there have been some big surprises. My wife does a better job than myself – I can’t even compete.

Thanks again for the free shipping – that really helps the wallet of a vayniac with a $100 palate and a $10 wallet. (Maybe it’s closer to $50 and $25)

QOTD: Pillar Box Red 2005. I loved your description of it a long time back, sounded exactly like something I would enjoy, and it definitely was. ESPECIALLY with it rolling in at less han 10 bucks.

Oh, and the Hermit Crab viognier as well. I really wasn’t a big white wine fan until I saw your review, thought it sounded interesting, tried it, loved it, and came back with renewed faith in white wines and have since found a few more that I really adored.

OK, that languedoc sounds like good fun. Pity I don’t have a facebook.

QOD: Rioja, all day long. Hammond pinot and Noblaie Chinon, both of which kicked all kinds of ass. I’d say Godello, but I’m saving it for a turkey-day aperitif, I think.

Wow! I love that book! I’m a waitress at a great bistro in San Jose and this book has now been passed around several of our staff members. I wish everyone would at least read her “tips” for diners, which should seriously be published in every major newspaper. If people only knew how much more fun a great restaurant can be when you know how to let the pros take care of you. Relax people! Great food + great wine + great service = experience to be savored, not controlled.

That said, thanks for keeping this up, I can’t tell you what a great resource these shows are for those of us who depend on our knowledge of food and wine for a living!

Maybe you could do an episode on real Beaujolais sometime. It’s a nice wine, I think, when it’s no longer nouveau.

QOTD: I doubt I would ever have tried an Albarino if it weren’t for you. Now it’s my second favorite white wine.

  115. November 16, 2007

Thanks for the show, Gary! Looks like another Languedoc wine that I am going to have to seek out. I, too don’t see what the big deal about BN is. So it is a rushed wine to celebrate the new harvest. Fine. I can see that. Hearing someone in a wine store say, “I just bought a whole case!” with a huge smile, is puzzling to me.

QOTD: I heard you talk many times about wines that have more of a veggie aspect vs. a more fruity component, but I really hadn’t experienced that until I went to a wine tasting for high end Cabernet. As I tasted several of these wines, I found a few that I tasted that immediately sent off veggie signals in my brain, and I LOVED IT! I found one in particular called Peju Province 2003 Cab Sauv Reserve from Napa Valley that was outstanding!

    Hi Gary,
I am watching a lot of your show and I really enjoy it.
Today the Beaujolais Nouveau comment made me a bit disappointed as it was not presented well. We all know that Beaujolais nouveau is not about a fantastic wine it is simply a wine which is made to celebrate the end of harvest and respecting all the people who where involved. Going through Carbonic fermentation it does keep the freshness and suit perfectly what is meant to match, barbecue or other party meal.
I have to say there is a lot of producer out there beside George Duboeuf who make probably better balanced fresh and fruity wine to suit the event. For saying that USA is number 3 world wide of Beaujolais Nouveau consumption…

    Hi Gary,
happy birthday — a bit late but OK with me because it comes with the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau, and your bashing comes close to my French heart — who could never understand, nor comprehend — this marketing hype of fake pleasures!
so here’s my gift : I’ve pinned down the two momentum episodes, when you revved up your coming — on episode 79, it became “…Vayner-chuk”, and on episode 111 THE big jump : “Vay-ner-chuk”. The guns where now ready to blast!
Trivia, certainly, but isn’t that part of any pleasure…

I don’t understand the whole Nouveau craze myself. I bought a bottle last year for the first time and was totally disappointed by it. It is definitely a modern wine marketing miracle. However, I have to say I think that Champagne is THE wine marketing miracle. :-) But that’s neither here nor there.

QOTD: No one specific wine per se, but I have tried Albarino because of WLTV!

QOTD: Well…I guess all in all there are not many wines that I’m not willing to try first & formost. However, I will credit my attempts to even out my cellar to watching WLTV. QOTD: I think WLTV has turned my attention to new varietals of wine that I did not know about before (i.e. Primitivo, Zinfandel, Sangiovese), but the problem is that I have a difficult time finding a lot of the specific labels here in Texas. Whenever I DO find one though, my husband makes fun of how excited I get! I have tried a couple of Mollydookers after the infamous episode and I enjoyed the Pillar Box Red that you had on one of the laid-back Fridays. I have a list of some of the more expensive wines that you’ve loved so that I can try one on a special occasion sometime.

I’m really looking forward to my Thanksgiving 4-pack! It’s being delievered today!

Thanks Gary for another solid show. Nice comment-amount yesterday ;)
I really don’t understand why Beaujolais Nouveau is still requested?
Everybody knows it’s a very very simple red, and for that effort quit expensive.
How can this still work? The only reason coming to mind is, the marketing,
the bottles look nice, and lots of customers (without noses and palates?)
who just drink the wine without giving further attention.

Hey Gary, way to be a buzzkill. You’re always going on about how wine ought to be fun and enjoyable and how we ought to forget all the snobbery surrounding it. Well, what’s less pretentious than Beaujolais Nouveau? Marketing gimmick? Absolutely. Tastes like grape juice? At best. But are people having parties every year to celebrate the release of Opus One? No one I know is. People celebrate the B-N release not because it’s good wine but because it’s a fun idea to ring in the new “wine” from the new harvest. Because, after all, the harvest — the farming — is what wine is all about. So, hand it to Georges Duboeuf and the rest of the French B-N makers: They’ve accomplished just what you’ve been after. They’ve made wine fun — at least one day per year. So check yourself, Sir Gary. You sounded an awful lot like a wine snob today.

I actually saw a guy at my local Holiday Market buying 2 bottles of the 2007 Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau. For some strange reason I felt compelled to say “you know, Gary Vaynerchuk said that wine is really terrible.” But I could just see him saying “what the hell is a vaynerchuk?!” so I politely said nothing.

In one of the last episodes you talked about sincerre, and for once I knew what to choose on the wine list in the restaurant, that’s a big change for me!
I choose the sincerre knowing you recommended it, I was with my parents and they loved it! I loved it too BTW.

    Hi Gary:

I don’t think there’s a particular wine I’ve sought out since watching WLTV, but the early episode on why you should decant your wine (using Amon Ra shiraz) really made a big difference in how I was able to better appreciate wine.

  171. November 16, 2007

    Your friend down under

Regardless of how beajolais tastes there is still a mystique about it. There is something appealing about a wine that get sent all over the world at midnight as fast as is possible to be consumed very quickly in Europe, China, Australia, America etc.

GV – I have been watching the show for a month or so. It’s the latest in a year long wine education effort which has included a trip to Napa / Senoma (where I toured Sloan’s ultra exclusive winery by the way – an incredible experience), to barrel tasting at Dellile Cellars in WA state. I have fallen in love with Quilceda Creek and Leonetti, and discovered a fantastic winery in WA called Fielding Hills – they are making great wine. My neighbor owns two Italian restaurants in Seattle and has shared a lot of Italian wine and food with me which has been fantastic. Which brings me to the QOTD. I ordered a case of the Barbera D’Allba, 05, and broke open the first bottle last night. My wife and I loved it. I have also ordered some of the Frank Family Zin and will probably order up some of the Schistes reviewed today. I enjoy the show a lot. Thanks for the effort.

Black Pig Albarino and Sunday Morning SB are the two individual wines I never would have even known existed and LOVED without WLTV.
As far as varietals go, I admit it. Before WLTV I had tried 2 or 3 dolcetto’s and wasn’t impressed. I thought they were 8-10 dollar wines, that cost 15-20 bucks. After your dolcetto episode I gave them another shot and now they are some of my favorites. It goes to show you can’t make an assumption about a varietal from 2 examples.

Here is a little poem about beaujolais:

    Brilliant cut and shiny,
    You prepare to accommodate,
    The liquid of the ground.
    The one which,
    Gathered in good season,
    Triturated carefully,
    You will release,
    A dress,
    A scent,
    A colour.
    You border the lips,
You will return in this body,
    You’re going to exhilarate .
    Like the one which,
Attracted by the girl in beauty,
    Will border its lips,
    Then roll up its dress,
    Feel its flower,
    Appreciate its colour,
    To finish in his body,
    Finally to,
    Make her head turn.

Anyway, great QOTD. You mentioned with the Coume Del Mas Schistes we need to write it down on a post it note, on your hand, text yourself, etc. For me, having the google notebook on my browser is awesome for this. Anyway, looking there now, at the top of my “GV shopping list” for my next wine buying binge is to try some Primitivo.

Thanks for the straight talk about Beaujolais Nouveau. Tried it on Thursday myself. Yuk. Tired of hearing about the stuff. There is so much better Beaujolais out there for just a few dollars more, and so many alternate wines for the same price.

QOTD – Aglianico, I’d never heard of that grape until I saw the episode a few months back, it got me into a whole bunch of Southern Italian wines.

A wine show that I watch on the internet sometimes, but it is so much more, how can you rate the influence you have had on my wine lexicon, you have opend this book that was so forbidden until now.

I’m drinking the wine right now, it smells like jersy frizzed out super hair, strawberries, and bananas. It better with chocolate and I bet you could pour it on ice cream. Drink the shit, it’s Tradition damnit!

lit match aroma comes from sulfer, matches have sulfer, and you are detecting sulfer from bottling. It will fade with time, so I’m told.

I want a big glass, but people see it, and they all want one too, do you ignore their wants, or do yo rub it in their face and just show your superiority via over the top glass ware?

Blueberry stew, call it macerated blueberries.

I see you have a fear-the-cop complex, what have you been doing?

The free shipping for insiders, it’s very gangster, I like it.

The beaujolais nouveau sounds a lot like this very sour 2002 pinot noir from Romania that my grandmother and I opened the other day.

Grandma also makes blueberry soup, ironically, especially in the winter and whenever blueberries are in season.

Awesome episode. QOTD: Albarino- It is just fantasic. Bought the Black Pig that you showed a few months ago & it blew me away. Have had 3 other albarino’s as well, but the Black Pig was by far the best.

I agree, it’s great to see a Michigan wine. North west Michigan is some of the most beautiful wine country you’ll come across. Well worth the trip. Most wineries make a very nice Riesling. Also worth seeking out are the Penninsula Cellars Gewurztraminer Old Mission Peninsula Maningold Vineyard, the sparkling wines from L. Mawby Vineyard Leelanau Peninsula, and wines from Chateau Fontaine. For years I’ve dismissed most reds from Michigan, however, the 2005 Brys Estate Pinot Noir was a very, very nice effort.

QOTD – White wines from Campania (especially Greco di Tufo)

Good show again, Gary. I appreciate you reviewing the Nouveau. I’ve been wondering how this year’s was going to be. I haven’t had a decent one for several years at least. I’m with you, I don’t understand what the big deal is.

QOTD: Petite Verdot and Malbecs. I’ve been looking for them and trying them since I heard you recommend them.

Just had a customer at the store return an entire case of the 2007 Deboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau and lots of reports that our customers are not liking it. Take that for what it’s worth.

Great review on the Beaujolais my wife and I were engaged in Paris 4 years ago, we landed the Friday morning after the release of the Beaujolais, Drank it all during our trip and even got hammered on it a few times. We buy it because of sentimental reasons, but it sucked the last 2 years.

I live in Michigan so, I chose this episode to show to my sister-in-law (who was visiting us) your show. Her 6 year old son was in the room and watching as well. We had just finished watching the segment on ‘Coume Del Mas Schistes’. Next thing you know he took a sip of his Knudsen Organic Lemonaid and said, with the corresponding hand gestures, “this is incredible,WOW, I love it, this is serious!”

    We laughed like crazy!

I watched your episode where you tried Four Vines Naked Chardonnay.
For the price point and your enthusiasm, I went out and found it.
It is now my “house” Chardonnay – the one you always have 4-6 bottles of in the event someone drops in.

great show, though I disagree with you about the nouveau. not about the quality of the wine, because that is up to the individual palate. but about what it does for the wine world. it may be a shameless marketing scam, but it is something a lot of people look forward to each year. it is all about community for me. I get a lot of joy knowing that around the world people are doing the same thing.

QOTD: You tried the Colome Malbec, which I haven’t had, but I saw their Torrontes and gave that a try. One of the most aromatic wines I have ever had!

QOTD: A Beaujolais. Paired it with beef bourguignon (yes made with a real Burgandy *wink*) that was fantastic. They both complimented each other very well.

QOTD: I’ve bought several blends/styles/varietal wines after learning about them on WLTV episodes but haven’t got around to cracking them open yet. I must say my impression of riesling was dominated by cheap sweet german stuff. However after trying dry riesling from Germany, Alsace and NZ.

QOTD: Cult Vines Roussane. Never would have spent that kind of money on a roussane without the wine club. Great wine. Would never have tried Les Fleurs des Pins Graves, either. Spectacular value.
