Sticking with Aussie wines this Thanksgiving. A Clare Valley Riesling for the white drinkers and a bottle of 05 Ares from 2 hands that I have been dying to try as well as the Angels Share. Love those Shiraz’s from down under

QOTD: Well, I don’t have much on hand now, so if I don’t get to the wine shop before Thursday then I have a Primitivo from Salento that’ll make its way to the Thanksgiving table this year.

3 of 3? I’m thinking 3 of 4, that’s 3/4 because Beaujolais is French and I know you, the GV, knows that.

Great show Gary! as always it is a pleasure to watch the show.
Question of the day: We are having a German Riesling that I recently discovered at costco, it tastes like a lemon with honey and pineapple with a hint of leeches running on your tongue and then licking a rock yum! it is only $7.99 it is very rare that I find a wine for that price that I truly enjoy. And for our red wine we’ll have cambria pinot noir & an Italian pinot nero blauburgunder(nice and dirty very burgandian).

    Salud!

Why haven’t more people commented today! I can’t not say something after an episode like this. It’s definitely scary to see an eight dollar wine on the US market from France that reaches the 90 point barrier. For someone like me, a recent CKC graduate, I can afford drinking this again and again – and not get bitter about shipping costs!

This is why almost all of my wine comes from across the pond – the Europeans are making wine that outperforms California wine in corresponding price-points, while also overcoming the exchange rate. I don’t think I have ever had a wine from California that impressed me with its structure or balance as even some 20 dollar wines from Italy. Am I just having bad luck from CA? Or is it really the silicone valley of the wine world – fake fruit/breasts and fast women without brains/structure?

On this topic, one of the most memorable wines I have ever had was the 2002 Pieve del Vescovo Tezio – Cabernet and Merlot blend from Umbria. The terroir of this wine just shined through so wonderfully to me, and so different than a California Meritage or Bordeaux. Cherries cherries, leather, tobacco, dirt….. Not the most complex wine, but so so delicious. Normally the deliciousness factor is associated with sugary wines, but this the old world equivalent – like being 3 years old and sucking on a piece of leather until your mom scolds you. I enjoyed this wine on my Mediterranean honeymoon cruise with my wife.

QOTD: As in the past, I enjoy both red and white wines in the same sitting because some dishes such as stuffing and baked sweet potatoes in maple glaze need a sweet and acidic wine to cut through the butteriness. Pine Ridge Chennin Blanc/Viognier has been good to me in the past, so I went with it this year. However, Riesling has also worked well in the past.

For reds, because there are going to be several people dining with us at my parents house, I can’t bring myself to bring a high end bottle that only my wife and I will appreciate – I’m paying for the wine. And as you showcased on your Thanksgiving show last year, I decided Sangiovese would do well to complement the Turkey. And to deal with the cost issue of serving 8 people wine, I decided to go with 2 Rosso di Altesino 2004 – the baby brunello as you put it. The last 2 years I went with CA/Oregon pinot noir, so I hope this comes off without a hitch. (Pinot seems to be the classic pairing with Turkey on Thanksgiving)

Qotd… nothing in particular, probably something non-alcoholic since we don’t really care for thanksgiving very much here. But maybe I’ll open a bottle of white port on the upcoming weekend :)

Yes, like Toke-Dawg pointed out, Blanka was street fighter. Anyway, I plan to drink Wilson Creek almond champagne or Frank family zin 2005 which I bought last weekend with my mom’s classic turkey on Thanks giving day. What about you?

QOTD: Well, it’s a work day for me so Coke or Dr. Pepper… But at least I’ll get some left overs over the weekend!

Found an interesting wine from Chile –
OOPS! it is the LOST Variety from France that makes the Chilean Merlot taste so different. Carmenere!
Looks and grows like Merlot but has a different structure kinda between Merlot and Cab Sav.

Come on, Gary, everybody knows that Blanka was Street Fighter!

The best value wines in the world right now, I believe, are coming out of the Languedoc. Great episode. Totally pumped me up.

QOTD: What’s going down the hatch with the Turkey? Well, for starters….

2006 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Drachenstein Riesling Dragonstone
2005 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette Cuvée Tardive

  16. November 20, 2007

    A-Gar

Blanka was from Street Fighter, not Mortal Combat. FWIW. ;-)

Great show. I’m drinking an Australian GSM on Thanksgiving for sure, and probably a Riesling, as well. Likely something local for the Riesling – Hogue or Covey Run.

QOTD: I’m thinking (HOPING) I’ll be drinking lots of Patz & Hall Chenoweth Vineyard Pinot Noir… because I’m having dinner at the Chenoweth’s!!!!!!! :) (Charlie Chenoweth is my boyfriend’s neice’s husband. And I’m hoping to take my post-dinner stroll through the rows of vines if I can!)

    good show.

qotd: Since I’m in the mood for merlot now, I am drinking Chateau Puygeraud Cotes de Franc 2003.

Mmm…face plant wine…grass and worms…who wouldn’t want to drink that?!?!?

Congrats on the Jets victory. The Sea-Chickens were able to pull off a victory of their own. And Boise State with one game left is looking to take down this years undefeated WAC team Hawaii for a chance at another BCS birth (small, but there’s a chance)!

QOTD: I’m drinking wine (TBD) with a little bit of beer with a little bit of wine. ;)

qotd = do not have a clue yet. We are traveling to L.A. and not bringing any food, just wine per my brother’s request (no it has nothing to do with my culinary skills). So what should I bring… The WLTV 4 pack sold out on me so now what? Any suggestions would be great..

    I feel silly now. :-&
GV, Thanks for airing my question.

QOTD: I’m going with the Frank Family Zin this Thurs. At my office Thanksgiving lunch, I brought in a Blue Fish Riesling (impluse buy from Publix)to go with the turkeys that I fried.
