We sold our last eight bottles of Chateau Pradeaux last week. Seven of them just came back… The customer liked one of his other choices – a Burgundy – much more.

We used to work with le Galantin, and have been meaning to again for a while, but I’ve been too busy to get back in touch. Thank you for the incentive – I’m going to make time now before somebody steals our, er, thunder.

QOTD: Do Bandol Rose’s for the summer that would be a great show!
If you have the BONES! go to BANDOL in December, every year they have a festival I believe its called “Fete du Millesime”. You can try all the new releases from the vintage and get rearly “BANDOLID”.

    2001 La Bastide Blanche Bandol
The nose was very closed when first opened. Ripe cherries were all that were apparent. However, within 10 minutes, hints of licorice and oak appeared. After hours in the decanter pepper and mineral notes came to the surface. In the mouth the wine is peppery, with bold fruit and plenty of oak. Hints of chocolate and coffee are secondary as it opens up over time. Good acidity and tannins linger in a very long, peppery finish.

    2003 Domaine Tempier Bandol
This wine needs a little air and food to really show well. When I first opened the bottle there wasn’t much more than some red and black fruit on the nose and palette. However, after being decanted for an hour, it presented some nice meat, earth and wood. After four hours, more complex notes like smoke appeared. For the last glass of the evening we paired it with and a soft white Italian cheese named Tallegio and this wine really stood up and showed why it’s a classic. With food, it’s something else altogether. I’ll definitely be back for more of this.

2001 Domaine du Gros’ Noré Bandol
This is a food wine…period. I had some before dinner and was not impressed. The nose shows some nice Blackberry, blueberry, spice and tar, but in the mouth it lacked much mid-palate and had plenty of fruit and tannins, but not much acidic zing. It just left me wanting. However, paired with Jacques Pepin’s French Farmer’s Soup, it was excellent. The soup’s smoked pork shoulder and white beans set the mouth up so the wine really came alive. The lacking acidity before seemed perfect now. A great lesson in food and wine pairing.

2006 La Bastide Blanche Bandol Rosé
The best rose I’ve ever had. Strawberry, lime zest and a metallic note on the nose. Beautifully balanced and graceful on the palate. Went very well with a pesto pasta dish and the next night with a chutney chicken.

    2004 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé
    No tasting note.

Yes. I had an excellent Bandol, La Bastide Blanche. I think it was 2001 but I am not sure of the vintage.
I tried it after a year in my cellar and was sorry I could no longer buy a case.

QOTD: I have not had a Bandol. I have been looking at one for the last six months at a wine shop, but I always buy something else. Saturday, my birthday treat to myself will be to buy some Bandol. I was waiting for a mention of “The White Shadow” with the salami reference. Maybe next time.
