AOTD: This weekend, is a curveball.. I have a cousin’s wedding (always fun and amazing) AND my elementary school reunion! quite random, but thats what facebook is all about. an ad-hoc 12-year elementary school reunion.

Hey G-man, how about doing some Champagnes before Xmas and and N-Years. Maybe you could run the range of “value” to “break the bank offerings.” I’ve been seeing some local press on the NV Mumm de Cramat and NV Henriot “Brut Soveraign.” Any insight would be appreciated.

QOTD: This weekend? Decorating the xmas tree and sipping wine somewhere along the way.
    Have a good one.

    Good Show/Episode,
It’s always nice to know what you, Gary, think about wines that people love.
I wonder if there are people who like wines until you say you don’t like them, then they change their minds, silly people.

QOTD: This weekend, i have nothing planned, but i’m up for suggestions… anyone?

  17. November 30, 2007

    Matthew L

Ahhh…the constant struggle to break the $10 price barrier for good wine. A lot of these wines tend to have a good nose but disappoint once you tip the glass.

QOTD: I’m going to my son’s basketball game tonight. My closest, like-a-brother, friend is flying in from California Saturday. I can only imagine what we’ll get into through Tuesday. My wife will probably need those little strings with a ring at the end, like on a window shade, to keep from rolling her eyes into the back of her head.

Have a good weekend everyone! What are you doing Gary?

    Oh…how’s the weightlifting/bulking up going?

Bummer that the under $10 wines didn’t turn out to be stars. It is so cool finding killer wine for around $10. At thanksgiving we had an $80 and $10 bottle tie for the #1 spot in our annual blind tasting.

QOTD: Going to my sister in-laws to install some light fixtures, nephews birthday party, soccer game, catch up on work, and WISHING I WAS AT CRUSHPAD.

It would be interesting to taste the Earthworks Cab to see what Gary means when he says “Hi-C” and fake fruit. It would be cool to tast the Sauvignon Blanc to see if I like it.

Fun and quick episode…..where is the lay back Friday couch?
This weekend my fiancee and I are dog sitting for my Aunt, writing 3 papers for our Hinduism class ( one is on Yoga and one is on Tantrism, so it isn’t all bad), and working 16-18 hours.
It’s FINALLY raining in So Cal, so besides all that…I’m just going to be chillin inside and staying warm…..If I had a Halo I’d be on there.
    Have a fun weekend!

I don’t believe there is a Parker review for the 06 Panarroz Jumilla Red. He gave the 04 a 90 and the 05 an 88. Jay Miller does the Spanish reviews now for the Wine Advocate and he didn’t review this wine as far as I can tell. Please let me know where Parker reviewed the wine you drank.

Just glad you take three cases of the Panarroz home, I’d have to fly to Jersey and “kick your face in for drinking more than two cases of anything”. Just Kidding. Would be fun to see an episode on Corbiers or Vayqueras. Two more s.rhone appl. that bring enormous amounts of thunder for the money.
People need to check out the Priorat region in Spain also. Big time thunder.

QOTD: We have a major snowstorm bearing down on us this weekend (10 inches plus in Minneapolis). Just staying in and kicking back in front of the fire with a little bit of Port. Tonight the wife and I just had a 2003 Turley Ueberroth Vineyard Zin. Probably the best bottle of wine I have ever had. The only problem with it is that at 16% alcohol it is impossible to finish the bottle and remember it at all. Which I guess is a good thing because then I get to savor it again tomorrow. It is borderline port in itself.

Also getting all my HAWKS gear pimped out for the SEATTLE/PHILLY battle this weekend, it should be a real treat since the Hawks and Eagles are BOTH Bordeaux N Rhone in my eyes.

When I turned up the volume just after I pressed “play” to play your video, I didn’t realize I had the Black eyed peas in i-tunes going. For a moment, I thought you were going to come out in giant satin shorts and a cape. I’m really glad you didn’t. Just enjoying current format.

My husband and I enjoyed some Bandol Rose this past summer. We’ll keep our eyes out for some more Bandol. Thanks for that show.

Cheap 90 pointers always seem to draw a lot of controversy!! Is it because sometimes wine critics are pushing the limits of “value wines”?!

Gary, I watched the episode last night after making a run to the wine shop with my boyfriend. After we opened the wine, we started watching episode #361 and I almost had a heart attack: we had just bought the Panarroz Jumilla (albeit the 2005 vintage)!!!!! Can you say RADOOL or what???

Gary I find that I will buy a wine because of the score, but that is just to try it. I don’t buy wine just because of the score. I prefer to buy wine that I have tasted, but you can not always do that. I even will buy a wine from your tasting reviews. I just think everyone should keep an open mind on wine and trying a wine because of a score or from some ones recommadation should not be bashed if that is not the only way to buy wine.

Gary – I’m a little confused with the 100 point scoring system. Should a “Fake Flavored” wine like this score 50 points or less? I’ve tasted it, it’s a fruit punch. Fruit juice + alcohol it’s a beverage, and that’s ok, but let’s stop calling it wine. Regarding Jay Miller, you are absolutely right. This guy is throwing 90+ left and right. I don’t dispute Parker’s palate, buy I do question his judgment selecting his partners.

QOTD: Mr. Mom for the weekend b/c my wife is working Saturday & Sunday. I am going to be drinking 2003 Glen Carlou Grande Classique, a really nice South African Bordeaux style blend that was only $13!

FWIW, we had the 2004 Panarroz, which I think WA also gave a 91. Your description of the 2006 sounded similar, however – no electronics in the 2004. We agreed w/ WA on the 2004 call of 90 pts – it was a solid effort.

The Barossa Valley does not produce California wines. That should be in Australia. Sorry to not-pick on this one. Especially for a Kool-aid cabernet.

  174. December 2, 2007

    vivaitalia

You shouldn’t tell people to trust their own palate and then say you’ll be angry at someone who likes the earth cab. I do agree high scores are being thrown around a little too much. People shouldn’t follow them solely but they are a great guide for those of use who can ill afford to spend $20 on something we’re going to pour down the drain.

  175. December 2, 2007

    Todd Smith

I’m hesitant now about Robert Parker’s (& Jay Miller’s) 90 point fruit bombs, especially from Australia. While I know they will appeal to the mass US market, those wines just don’t do it for me. The fruit extraction can be amazing, but often gets boring after 1 glass.

Hey man, I love that Panarroz. Girlfriend has had it too, says the same – loves it. Frankly I have never had a ‘cheap’ wine from Jumilla or Yecla or Alicante that wasn’t a totally kickass QPR. If I go into a wine store and see a wine under $12 from that area of Spain, I buy it. I have yet to be disappointed.

Well since I was already on my way to my weekend when you posted this I will let you know what I did. The family and I went to the opening weekend of the Advent Festival in Graz, Austria. I spent a fair portion of the weekend drinking gluhwein.

I’ve been a big fan of the Panarroz as an every day drinker for a few years now… always pick up a bottle if WL has it in stock (which probably won’t be for a while after this episode)

QOTH: bad- oral surgery good- its in NJ so I’ll leave several teeth short but a case or two richer :o )

QOTD: I went to an adorable little wine shop in Colleyville, TX (Tavoli Wines) and enjoyed a free wine tasting with my girlfriends! It was a lot of fun and I ended up taking home a really delicious Viognier. Then my husband and I had a fondue night and stayed in watching Food Network (our addiction) and playing with the dog. All in all, a good weekend.

However, could you do some reviews on Oregon Pinot Noirs? Thanks and much success!

We’ve picked up the Jumilla because of the shelf talker had the 90 point score and the ($8-10 in our local Co-op) price point. Not disappointed and friends have enjoyed it, too. I’m not sure we picked up the electronic nose but we’ll look for that next time we open one up.

The Jumilla sounded nice but I really have got problems nowadays of spending less than $12 on a bottle of wine, too many times been bitten by the cheapies (which can be quite painful! :)

QOTD – flew back from a business trip South of the Equator and then slept a lot. The family’s sick at the moment so only a matter of time before I get it too.

Much big red wine will be consumed. Plus one of her sisters is making a crapload of desserts and we are going to try like a half dozen dessert wines. On Sunday, we will go Christmas tree hunting in the woods (tree farm) and then watch the Browns beat the J-E-T-S, JETS! ;-)

Wine scores are a necessary evil! I hate using them, but at the same time I like a little guidance when trying to choose from the thousands of options out there.

Also, I’ve lost a lot of respect for Parker as of late, he is all over the board, sometimes right on, others way off. I tasted a wine recently that he scored 91 pts and it was terrible. For the right amount of money he will give any wine 90 points, blind scoring my ass!

QOTD: Went to the Unveil the Vayniac event at crush pad in SF. It was awesome!

It seems that Parker is consistently scoring many Australian reds 90+. They are being sold locally for $25-$75. Makes me wonder. I have bought a few rolling in at $20 range, but have not opened them yet. I would like to see more episodes on high scoring value wines.

Tasting Panarroz right now on GV’s recommendation.
I agree with his nose, strabge burning motor smell. And I think it cost me $10 or $11 but it was worth it. Good wine for the price.
    Thanks GV!

Just bought a bottle of the Panarroz for under $7 — I totally agree with burned
electric motor and battery analogy — it’s like the taste of a 9 volt when you’re checking to see if it’s still good. It also has a pine note to it. BUT — after 15 minutes or so the wine opens up and some nice fruit emerges. Lots of earth as well with some solid structure. Would work well with intense chesses and meat dishes. A bit tight. I think Parker is seeing where this wine is going in time. Give it a year or two and it may well be worth the 90 point score.

And for $7 you can’t really beat it.

  221. January 31, 2008

    Jameson

Continuing… I’ve had this bottle open for a day to see if it would open up.
So far, no show. It reminds me of an empty bookcase — lots of structure but not enough content. Just not much fruit. Some dark berry notes and a cranky-cranberry thing on the top, along with earth and some exotic herbal notes and lots of that electric motor -”touch the 9 volt battery to your tongue” thing, but I seem to taste too much of the edges of the wine and not enough substance.

So I’m going with Gary and not with Parker on this one.

I bought a bottle of the Panarroz back when this ep aired and I opened it tonight, so I looked up the episode to taste along. I give it a sniffy-sniff and got this very distinct smell that I couldn’t describe. It’s so strong and unique; a little nutty maybe, but not really. Then I play the vid and you say it smells like burnt electricity and I say “Yes! Yes it does, that’s EXACTLY what it smells like… wild!” It really turned me off at first, until I realized that smell and then I was able to appreciate it for what it was. Interesting. Totally worth the 6 bucks just for that experience. Thanks.

Also, I watched the rest of the episode and decided I want some skittles.

OK — this is scary. I was driving along PCH on my way to San Diego and a big Diesel-Electric freight train was stopped with some sort of engine fire and the smoke was blowing across the Freeway. As I drive through it I caught a big wiff of burned-out electric motor — and it reminded me immediately of the nose on the Panarroz. Burning freight train engine doesn’t exactly sound appealing, but that’s one of the great things about wine — it connects to the rest of life, sometimes in the most unexpected ways!

I have been a part of 2 retail stores (DC & Nashville) and this wine has consistantly sold like crazy at both. I think this would be a great wine to revisit during your next “decant vs. straight from the bottle” episodes. I would (just as Gary does) certainly recommend that this wine be decanted or left in the glass for several hours and that you revisit it several times throughout an evening. I certainly can see some musty, even burnt plastic aromas initially, however, 2 hrs in the glass and it is a totally different wine. I have enjoyed the past several vintages of this GSM with any meat, especially beef right off the grill. I always get a strong note of chocolate and leather from this wine and was surprised not to see that on the show or in the comments. 88 points from GV is great but I think you would have been overwhelmed with a slightly cooler, decanted Panarroz.

I just tried the panarroz jumilla. when i first opened the bottle i got HUGE plum/plum skin on the nose….but after 3+ hours of decanting it went towards the chemicallyness gary described, although not all the way to baterry acid. It was fruity when i tasted it, but a little confused and all over the place is how it felt. not very settled and the tannins and took over and consumed my pallete quickly from mid to the finish. Decent drinker for 7 bones. Enjoyable with my meat-loaf, and the sweetness of the meat calmed the tannic finish. wouldnt say i’d get another bottle, but it was not the worst wine ive every had. thanks gary for the experience!
