This really was awesome GV. I love Jay by the way, if I could afford him and he worked in MPLS I would drop the $75,000 for a kick ass wine room.

Seriously tho, excellent job today guys!!!

Wow – great episode. I really warmed up to it once you hit cellar #2 and started talking about the different types of wood. It was great the rest of the way.

Here lately I have been sitting back around 430 or 500 in the afternoon in my easy chair with a bottle of wine most of the time and maybe some cheese and or crackers of sorts and sip and munch until WLTV hits my laptop screen. As I watch these episodes I think to myself, “this is it, it can’t get much better than this”. Then I’ll think, “what is GV going to do today to keep my interest”. Guess what, you have come through again GV, now I want a cellar. My little 500 bottle cabinet has suddenly become hmmmmmmm dommmmmmm. Of coarse my wife is going to kill the both of us before it is all over. What an episode. THANK YOU

GARY!!!! Freakin best episode in my opinion ever. I loved the cellers. I know those people are having some good times and great wine in those cellers. One of those cellers was bigger than my apartment!!. Thanks gary for giving this awesome look inside these cellers.

  45. December 5, 2007

    tarheel17

Awesome! I loved the episode. I have total cellar envy. I just invested in my first set of wine racks (the boxes with the 4 slots of six) that should be delivered soon. So I can finally take my wine out of the styrofoam containers they’ve been sitting in for 6 months! Yes, my hannukah present to myself. 3 boxes to hold wine. And it’s not even going to hold my entire collection. Once step at a time…

  46. December 5, 2007

    DaveyDonut

AWESOME episode! I was glued to the monitor for the whole time. I am currently looking to convert a closet in my house to a cellar, so I’m trying to grab as much information as possible. Perfect timing of the episode for me! My cellar will be totally bare bones, so I will not get anywhere near even $10/bottle for the storage, but it will do the job… you brought up some interesting concerns that I’ll have to look a bit further before I begin construction… But I found the episode very informative. Thanks for doing it!

Thanks GV, that was good fun. Now if the water table wasn’t 12 inches below grade here in NC, we could have a basement for such things. Eurocave(s) to the rescue! Just not as cool as a room for 1500 bottles.
    Cheerio!

GV, nice ‘double issue’ of WLTV. A magnum show?
Mike G., I feel your pain! Will have to build a stand-alone wine outbuilding if I ever want a radool wine ‘cellar’ in ENC. Hey, it could happen! Why build a house for a freakin’ lawn mower anyway? Wine’s a much better use of that space.

Great episode! One of my favorite ones! I can’t wait to build our new house in the next 3-5 years. I’m already planning the size/location of my cellar. My wife started worrying when she saw what I was watching because she knows how excited I already am about building one of these for myself! Thanks for the great informative show.

  80. December 5, 2007

    David

    Gary,

I guess if someone has $50K to spend on a cellar, they probably have enough left over to buy $500 (or more expensive) bottles of wine left and right. But it seems to me that if your budget is limited, it makes more sense to spend the, say, $10K on wine than to build a cellar. Your thought?

    David

  81. December 5, 2007

I’m still looking for a good game room. . .but a wine room, omg. This episode was the best (so far). I love looking at all the different styles. Thanks so much for this episode.

15 year white burgundy. thank you gary for opening that one for us . on thanksgiving we had some kermit lynch and some laflaive that took two hours to open up… after being trapped in that bottle for so long they need a little breathing room and are not so steady on their legs when they first arrive…

cool episode. cool to see that stuff, but man, that dude’s basement had more bedrooms than my house. and that was the small cellar!

i’d like to see an episode where you show those “24-36 month” setups, as i feel they’d probably be a lot more in line with what most people can pull off.

    Jon A.

Like just about everyone else I enjoyed seeing the various cellars in todays episode, it’s always nice to pick out little things from everything you see to put into your ‘dream cellar.’ Until then, do you have any information/recommendations on small unit wine storage/portable cellars? This may be more of a question for an e-mail, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to cellar some fine wine and doesn’t have either (or neither): A) $16-18k (I believe the ‘cheapest’ cellar shown), or B) a house in which to build a cellar. Anyway, great episode Gary and see you tomorrow.

  89. December 5, 2007

Woah……ho-ly shit!!!! I just wet myself

  90. December 5, 2007

    Kristen

Aw lay off GV with the sweater….it had to have been chilly in those cellars! Really interesting episode GV, I’m glad you did it! You and Jay gave me some pointers to use in several years even though I’m a CKC (or a PGS- poor graduate student).

I’ll have to ask my middle class host parents in France about their wine cellar (that I saw upon entering their home for the first time). When they said “Yes, we have a wine cellar” I responded with “Well that be what rich people has in US.” [believe me, bad grammar included!] And please don’t hate on the CKC….cause seriously, we’ll be the next generation with cellars. I will certainly be one of those people, especially if I’m living in France. It seems like everyone has a “cave” over there in their homes! I think it’s almost a requirement, like having a laundry room in the US!

  91. December 5, 2007

    Kristen

And btw, were all of those cellars in the suburbs of of NJ cause I felt like they were!

  92. December 5, 2007

okay this ep will take more timethan I have right now…I’ll watch the rest tomorrow. Looks great so far ca, 10 minutes. But I gotta go to bed.

    Tommy Vernieri

I saw 40 minutes and I thought, oh jeeze I don’t know if I can watch cellars for 40 minutes, but you held my interest the whole time.

Gary, that was an amazing episode, man! Hey, my wife even watched some of it with me! By the way, she wants to know, is there going to be a contest in the future where the winner gets a cellar designed by Jay Rosen? Sign us up, NOW!!!!!

  96. December 5, 2007

    Ant'ny

What an awesome episode. I am not exactly sure that I’d define those “small” cellars as small. Those homes are probably out of my price range. At any rate… great job. I’d like to see some coverage on portable wine cellar units. I have been searching for a 36 to 60 bottle size unit, but have seen poor reviews on many of the products out there. Any recommendations!

  97. December 5, 2007

    Scott

Great, great episode GV!!! Thanks for the insights. I’m going to make my wife watch this one to show her how much we need to upgrade the half of the storage room she’s alloted for our wines.

Holy cow, Gary! What a phenominal epsode! Loved every single minute. Could have gone on longer with more cellars. IT WAS BITCHIN!!!! Jay Rosen (I apologize if I misspelled his name). What a tremendously talented man. I hope, after this episode, his phone is ringing off the hook (although, it looks like he’s doin’ just fine…:}). Thank you, Gary, as always!!

  102. December 5, 2007

    Mikey K

I was glued to the episode from the start. I don’t know anything about cellar or cellaring wine but I felt I learned a lot from it

  103. December 5, 2007

    Ben N.

One of the best episodes you have done. Thank you very much.

  104. December 5, 2007

    Corrado

Great show today, Gary. Loved seeing the cellars.

The one question I would have liked to see addressed was for the Vayniac who was just starting off and wanted to build the space for a small personal cellar on a much tighter budget (under $3k) for that

  105. December 5, 2007

    Candace

A must see episode for sure. Jay Rosen offered so much information for those thinking about cellaring. We cellar in some sort of disorganized crazy fashion. Perhaps we’ll get organized in such a nice way. Definitely food for thought. We can’t thank you enough.

  106. December 5, 2007

    amgryger

Really good episode Gary! Being that I am into wine and also an architect, I was really into this. I’m young and still renting, but someday I will be living in a house of my own design with a very nice wine cellar.

  107. December 5, 2007

    cma82

Absolutely awesome episode gary. It was like a wet dream for me. My 16 bottle little unit doesn’t even hold my good wines. And as a CKC, I can say all of those cellars were realistic for my lifestyle. I could build a cellar like that if I used my entire apartment and sold a kidney to pay for it maybe…not a bad idea!

P.s. Your free shipping is not really helping my budget

such a wine geek episode… love it. it seperates the boys from the men if one is glued to the screen. talk about trophy rooms though. and weeahhh, i have mold in my room and on my bottles. wine tastes better when there is mold on the bottle, duh.
    no QOTD?

Great episode! Although you can’t make this a daily thing or I won’t have time to do anything else. Also, it had that cribs/lifestyles of the rich and famous feel.

Great show, even though I’m looking at a much lower price point. Basically any apparatus under $100 that can store 50+ wines. My roommate I think is getting mad at our lack of counter space due to my wine buying.

    Happy Channukah Ghena.

Gary, awesome episode! I have the HDH auction book for the Verlin Dec. 1 auction. Steve Verlin seemed like an amazing collector, restauranteur, entrepreneur. I remember one of your episodes, when you told a story about him – this scary looking biker guy who walked into Wine Library, and you got to know him…

I loved the cellar topic today. About a month ago, I took delivery of my Le Cache 3800 Euro cooler (458 bottle capacity, but not even half that full yet). http://www.le-cache.com/wine-cabinets/le-cache-wine-cabinets-and-accessories.cfm?body=detail&ID=59 I love it, and love the hobby. And as I keep spending money to fill it up, I think my wife might get the idea to stuff me in there one day.

One day, yeah, I’d love to have a walk in cellar and fill it with vintage Bordeaux magnums (magni?). One day, who knows….

I live in a two room apartment, so I don’t have a wine cellar. I have a wine ‘floor area in the kitchen’, but since the wall heater is in the bedroom not the kitchen, it actually keeps pretty cool there.

Just got through the end of the show. Happy Hannukah, Sasha? Cool. I’m lighting the candles out here on the left coast.

By the way, can I just say – the Vayniac Hater Queens came out in force today on the Viddler liner notes. It was getting to feel like WHINE Library for awhile there. People moaning about the sweater, the man handholding (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the ADD… Funny stuff, some of it. But I felt some of these people were really jonesin to get their drink on.

This episode got me thinking about other concepts. How about celebrity wine cellar tours? I think Wine Spectator showed Sammy Hagar’s cellar – that was cool. (Cool. But I can’t bring myself to say “Radool.” That word would so get me…. what’s the opposite of laid?)

Ooh, here’s another show idea. How about going behind the scenes at a great hotel or restaurant, with a great sommelier. I think it would be great to see you jump in and give some tables wine advice, just for kicks. And I’d like to see you taste wines next to a full blown sommelier or wine critic, someone who can go toe to toe, mano a mano with the BigAssGlassMan.

Wish we could’ve seen your set-up, Garry! Or do you have a corner of Wine Library’s cellars all to yourself? VIP (Vaynerchuk is Pimpin’) cellar-room? Secret cellar that’s behind a false bookcase? Slide down a fireman’s pole? Vayner-cave?

The wife has been saying she wants a new house (not like we did not just build one a few years ago) so maybe I can a nice wine cellar into the deisgn. She like the episode as well. Great to see what’s possible and fun to see Gary out and about with a co-host. I would echo some other comments that it would be nice to see a storage option for those of us who won’t be spending thousands of dollars for a custom room or is this even relevant if we just are buying wine that isn’t going to sit for years at a time? Thanks and keep up the great job you are doing….best show on the net!!

I enjoyed this episode a lot. I kept waiting for Robin Leach to spring out from behind a wine rack, with red dribble all down his shirt.

Though custom-built cellars may sound excessive, I’m starting to think they’re really not all that crazy. I just have one of those mini wine fridges that’s supposed to hold 16 bottles. Within about a week I’d crammed in 20 or 21 bottles, and they all fall out whenever I open the door. This episode really showed how planning for long-term wine storage can make a hell of a lot of sense, even if it doesn’t seem like it just by looking at the 10 or 20 bottles you might have on a rack in the corner of your living room.

Simply fantastic………Gary you are changing and educating the wine world; very nice.

Certainly makes my 15 square foot wine rack in the cellar, look a bit sad. However I find it good enough for my needs and budget. Because I usually only buy a case or two every few months and drink it fairly quickly. However; if I were a rich man………..

Very interesting show, I’m so envious! For now I’ll spend the $$$ on the wine.

Thanks for a wonderful episode. I want to add an idea for all of you considering a cellar but have no room at all. we added a spiral cellar to our condo in Santa Fe. It holds 800 and cost $4200 to construct. You go down instead of out and it requires no cooling units at all. but does use some intricate piping. It can be put into the floor of any room in areas without high surface water tables and ours goes down 15 feet. The wine is stored around the edges of the spiral so you can get the wines as you are descending or ascending the spiral staircase. Our is only 8 feet wide at the top just big enough for us to get in and a trap door was constructed that looks just like the floor. This is superior to the pre-made unit we bought and installed from Wine Enthusiast in our home in Virginia Beach and it only holds 440 bottles and cost $3200 + installation. The site is http://www.spiralcellars.com/us/index.html

Great stuff Gary. I have had several clients request wine rooms in new houses. We usually use an outside consultant, but now I ma thinking we may just design the racks ourselves, and now I have some specs I can provide the contractor. Badass. My next house will have a wine room incorporated in to it. The unfortunate thing i have see is that most people want the room, but won’t pay to condition it properly..but, what are your going to do?

    Hey Gary,
Very nice show. Really enjoyed it! While I aspire to the greatness of those cellars, and enjoy seeing them, my own is quite humble. It consists of about 50-70 bottles in a wine fridge under the stairs. It only varies 2-3 degrees, and most of the wine gets consumed within 24-36 months, but alas I’ve started to lay down a few bottles for the long haul. When my 2005 Bordeaux futures come in, I’ll have to figure out what to do to store those (keeping at least 20 years). As you can see, I’ve only been into this a couple of years, but we all have to start somewhere I guess.

wowwwww, a wine cellar is like my ultimate goal for a future home and those are some pretty sweet ones! I might need to give J Rosen a call in like 10 or 15 years… For the moment, I keep my bottles sideways under the bed. If you have a carpet and no money, its definitely the way to go.

Enjoyed all the wine cellars. Most important point you mentioned was how long will you keep the wines and their price point. I have a passive cellar, I don’t sell my wines and normally keep them less than 10 years. My temp fluctaution is frpom 55 in winter to 68 in the summer. My bottles have aged fine. I do use a dehumidifier to keep the humidity around 70%. I can hold around 700 bottles and it cost me around 1500 to build.

That was a great look at wine cellars! Gary, your point about wine rotation and need for a cellar was an important one to distinguish. Thanks for saving the best for last! That household not only sees wine as a legacy, but also as something to be enjoyed and shared in the present.

Amazing ep. I’ve always wanted a cellar on the main floor attached to the dining room. That is the ideal place. It is so tempting to do this but then I think, why don’t I just buy $60K worth of better wine. What would give me more enjoyment? I guess both.

  192. December 6, 2007

    Gary,
I enjoy watching your show and your enthusiasm for wine and I am going to throw a huge “but” in here. Ready? Your camera presence and good looks are hurt by your very poor posture. I am a chiropractor in addition to being a wine lover, and I am suggesting that you see your chiropractor to fix your “forward head carriage.” It is quite easy to do so with a few adjustments and some home exercise and stretch instructions. Let me know if you need any assistance.

Interesting show, it’s just hard to watch knowing the bulk of my generation or younger won’t be able to afford to fill those cellars with some of the great wines from France and California. Priced out of collecting. I have a cellar at home, but you’ve got to be on another planet to believe these are in the range of the every-day-joe. Evidence the wine world is changing, not necessarily in a good way, especially people trying to get started.

  195. December 6, 2007

Great episode Gary! I hope one day I have enough money to have a house big enough for a wine cellar, let alone the cellar and the wine itself… you know if you weren’t so entertaining I wouldn’t be spending all the little money I have on wine! I’d be far better off financially if you hadn’t given me this love of wine! Damn you Gary!!

Great episode, even though I probably wont be getting one for 20 years, I learned a lot. Mostly that I really want a wine cellar.

Another reason I liked the last one was the yellow light they had hanging in the middle of the space. It gave it more charm and personality than the more monochrome and sterile-looking cellars.

Someday.. to have a cellar like any of the ones there. Though I was disappointed to see comments like smokeyust’s in the broadcast. References to “too much sausage” and using gay in a derogatory sense. I come here for the video, not to see homophobic comments tagged into the video.

Really enjoyed the Wine Cellar show, it’s unbelievable to see some of the collections of wine and their storage! How about a show giving advice on wine refrigerators and wine racks? (Do’s and do not’s) Unfortunately, it might be a little while before I can drop 20,000 bones on a wine cellar!Love the show! Great Job!

  209. December 6, 2007

    Karl Laczko

Wonderful show – classy cellars, but way out of my price range! The average per bottle storage costs for those things are more than the average per bottle cost of my wine :)

A nice change of pace for WLTV.

I’m really glad you showed that last room and how cellars can be incorporated into other parts of the house other than the basement. It’s not very common to find basements in Texas, so I’m glad to know that a custom environment can be built to sustain the wines.

That was really great. I was getting ready yesterday to email you about cellars, particularly your own, but there is no need now. Thanks. My own cellar is in a hall linen closet, it stays pretty cool and dark all the time. I don’t really need more than twenty bottles storage at a time. I honestly don’t know what I would do with any more than that except to turn into a raging lush.

Gary, thank you for this wonderfully informative episode!

Here in the West Coast’s earthquake country, my ‘wine cellar’ consists of an ambient (but stable)-temperature interior walk-in closet. The individual bottles are encased in styrofoam, and stacked in cardboard boxes. Rock and roll!

Awsome show!!!! Thanks for all the ideas! Are any of these homeowners getting divorced? Make room for me to sneak in… :p

Awesome episode, watched the whole thing without getting up, thanks for an interesting tour.

I’ve been a little slow to watch recently – but this show was great. I’m in the middle of a remodel with cellar space included. This was a great show for ideas on how to construct that space.

Much appreciated episode. Great tour of some fantastic home cellars!

Nice episode. Gary makes an interesting point regarding the need for elaborate cellars. They’re for storing wines beyond 24-36 mos. Consider this when sizing a cellar. Keep your NZ S.B. and your vinho verde someplace else if necessary.

Great episode. Confirmed a lot of what I went thru when building wine cellar in my house in SoCal earlier this year. Not only good for storing my wine collection, but has become an entertainment focal point. Very cool (sorry for the pun) sitting on stools around the tasting table and enjoying a bottle of wine with friends.

If you’re in SoCal and interested, I recommend my designer/builder, GLR Custom Wine Cellars. He builds custom wine cellars and wine cabinets (also a very neat way to store wine) all over SoCal. He’s based in Long Beach, but travels all over LA, Orange, San Diego, and Ventura counties building projects. He’s working on a huge custom cellar in Malibu right now. Website is http://www.glrcustomwinecellars.com.

Kudos! A very nice change of pace Gary. However, even the lower priced cellars are out of my range. If I was ging to spend that kind of money I would just buy the wine and drink it.

Gary this episode is awesome!!! I have been waiting for the cellar episode. I wish i could afford to have a cellar built into the house!!!

    Gary-

Great Show! Allows a glimpse of how some of the more privileged enjoy their wine. Boy, it’s nice to dream. I’m still making do with my STUFFED 200 bottle wine cooler. Your guest, Jay Rosen was very informative and seems to enjoy what he does. As soon as I have the money (and space), and of course, permission, I will be building one of my own. AWESOME. THanks again.

Great, great show. Thanks for bring on Jay on and walking us through this tour or cellars and storage spaces. Whether one of the Vanyniacs is ready to build, or just dreaming like me, this has to be counted as one of the greatest reasons people love WLTV. No where else have I been able to get such accessible information about wine and all the things that go along with it. Nowhere else is someone taking us on a trip to France.

Thanks for continually bringing the thunder … day-in-day-out!

    Cheers!

Hey Social Brian has a great idea…

How about having Andrea Zimmer on the show? Taste 3, 4 wines… see how your palette matches up with hers.

    I like this idea…

Someday when I win the lottery, I will be able to afford such HUGE gorgous wine rooms…….
until then………….. I am grateful just to have such great wine and such great family and friends!!!!!!!!! :)

    Taylor

Well as a CKC it would be hard to afford something like this, but a great reason to be sure to hit the books and study hard to have a nice wine cellar some day. Great episode!

  254. December 8, 2007

    Sassodoro

Hooray!! I got Mrs. Sassodoro to watch an episode of Wine Library TV!! And she even took some notes!! She has a background in interior design, and she really got into it. All right!

    JordanW

I gotta say, this was one of the coolest episodes I’ve seen yet. Someday I’ll be bringing in enough bones to build a cellar like this (and stock it?). Dream big!

  256. December 8, 2007

    Dr. Joe Herman

you should have a contest and go to peoples houses to msee their cellars. But more important then the cellars, are the wines that housed in the cellars. Loved the show and cant wait to see more

  257. December 9, 2007

    Elliot Essman

You have outdone yourself on conceiving this episode. Total value. And thanks, Jay.

    damon aka unknownwine

that was cool to see. I’m building my own cellar in a very small space under a stairwell. I’ll document cost and show some pics of the progress soon.

    Marcus Pape

Nice show GV! Pretty impressive wine cellars. Now if only the other 99.9% of the country’s population could afford something even close to that we would be in business! Let’s try to bring it down to earth next time and take a look at cellars for the average human. I for one would rather put the 10K-60K into the actual wine, rather than a place to store my wine. Best point of the show was in the last two minutes with conditions for long-term cellaring (20+ years) versus conditions for an average couple years of storage.

  261. December 10, 2007

    Andrew

    Thanks Gary

    Interesting show

WOW, great show. Jay does some beautiful work. Makes me almost wish that I had some space (and money) to play with.

    Fred Liu

Yeah, always run out of the inventroy…Whatever, maybe adapt the baby’s room into a cellar someday, of course, after the baby become an adult…I mean, old enough to sleep with some bottles…

  265. December 11, 2007

    Dave

Great selection of beautiful cellars but disappointingly unrealistic.
Showing $65K cellars just highlights and compounds the “wine for rich” attitude that prevails throughout a majority of the wine industry; from blue chip “investment” wines and vineyards to phenomenally overpriced wine tours and everything in between.
How can the average wine lover justify £22/bottle for wine storage? What happened to QPR? Surely that value should apply across the board and not just to individual wines.
Come back down to earth, where the real wine lovers live!

  266. December 12, 2007

    JayZee

Very interesting episode, GV. I really enjoyed seeing all of those beautiful cellars. Jay does great work. My cheapo (~$4,500) wine room kit cannot hold a candle to these, but I have ~1,000 bottles jammed in there now with my Breezaire cooling unit. The humidity isn’t up to snuff, but it will have to do. Do I need more storage? Ah, maybe someday. I would love to have a custom wine room that we could actually sit in and enjoy the wine. Of course, none of my wine will last 40 years and neither will I at this point (well, maybe).

  267. December 14, 2007

Great Episode, very nice. What happened to the White Burg?

I love this episode, it’s very informative… although not quite practical for my situation. Hope u can do a wine cabinet episode, too… for those of us who can’t quite win over spaces from our significant other.

    Nice… an ‘86 Mouton Rothschild…
