Good show Gary. Except the end there, where you didn’t choose me. So sad. Ah well, such is life. Or at least my life.

QOD – Next contest winner joins you on your next WineLibrary buying trip.

  15. December 6, 2007

    Jeff

Viral marketing contest… Something wild (sane, but wild) and crazy (see first bracket) you do to advertise WLTV to people. Whether it’s putting a banner on your car, wearing a WLTV shirt to work on casual Fridays at work, etc. Photo required to PROVE it! My suggestion… think outside the bottle and the widgets! Keeping the widget-love out there GV, deserving. Happy H-days to you!

    PhilB

    Congrats to the winner!!
I’m so glad a fellow Canadian will be the co-host!!! Can’t wait to see that happen!!

QOTD: Man, this contest was already so cool…. But I say it’s one thing to have the winner flown in to NJ, but the next contest winner should be able to choose a spot anywhere on the planet and have GV to go with him or her to that spot to shoot the show!

Best wishes from Paris to all the fellow Vayniacs!

    Yeah Canada!!! in the house!!!
QOTD – What about a vayniac t-shirt contest……get us all working on the next one

  18. December 6, 2007

    Jeff

QOTD: The winner receives some free wine from WLTV, since that $500 bottle of wine was such a big hit! Who wouldn’t want some free stuff!

    I love this show!

  22. December 6, 2007

    JK from WV

Gee, I wish I’d have won!!! I was practicing the intro and everything. Oh well, life goes on.

QOTD: Next contest: A really kick ass bottle or two of bourdeaux. I’ll let you decide which ones and how high on the price ladder you’d like to climb but something that would let us ordinary poor people get a taste of the good stuff. How about a red and white set? Maybe something that’s aged well and ready to drink. Keep up the fun!

  23. December 6, 2007

    HuskerJamie

Gary, Thanks for the kind thoughts about Omaha, it’s been a tough day for everyone in the area.

QOTD: How about a wine and dinner package with the Mangenius? No cameras allowed.

  24. December 6, 2007

    mattlock

Great show as usual. Loved the contest even though I didn’t enter, it was still fun to watch.

QOTD: Maybe a photo contest of some type that involves wine and family.

  25. December 6, 2007

    waibeans

QOD: free tix/hotel to WL supertasting.. Or go to a wine producing area of choice with GV and do a tour.

keep the contest itself within about spreading the thundershow.. got to keep the movement growing :)

  26. December 6, 2007

    DHerbie

    Congrats to the winners!

QOTD: Best holiday photo that incorporates WLTV. But I don’t like the voting situation so I say send a holiday photo in with WLTV somewheres and get in another drawing.

Great episode by the way, some of my grad school friends are from Valpolicella and they constantly talk about their region’s wine. I unfortunately have struck out each time I get a wine from that area.
    Cheers

    What a great show…Hay Gary whats a Brew-HA-HA???

QOTD:What happened to the first question whats under the football?? I say it is a WLTV wrist band??

QOTD:UMMM I am not sure??? I have to think about this one???????

  29. December 6, 2007

    Daniel

QOTD: I think the contest should be a crazy wine-naming contest. That would rock my socks off.

  30. December 6, 2007

    Billr

CONGRATS both of you two on your wins….. Nice show….. Is there a iPod under the football?????

QOTD: What should be the contest….Hmmmmmm How about a treasure hunt in Cyberspace? Say you ask a easy question of a particular website each day at the end of your show for a week or two or three or four. Or maybe a question a week say on Wednesdays for a month of shows. Then, the answers to all of those questions would be sent together in an e-mail to MOTT (not MOM) and those people that have all the right answers would go into a spit bucket for a final drawing. This would keep the viewers going strong.

  31. December 6, 2007

QOTD: Write a short essay on what you have done to change the wine world for the better.

  41. December 6, 2007

    Barry

QOTD: My best guess is that there is a paper football underneath it.

  42. December 6, 2007

    Taylor

Had me nervous with the first wine, but it turned around hardcore!!! The Zardini sounds awesome!
QOTD The next contest should be something along the lines of either send a clip of our own opening for the show or a contest to see who can come up with the most creative thing to put on the board.

PS there’s nothing under that jets football

  43. December 6, 2007

    amgryger

QOTD: There was a video contest, so maybe a “Changing the Wine World” essay/short fiction contest.

  44. December 6, 2007

    eightfifteen

The next contest could be a production of an intro.

By the way, what kind of wine pairs well with canuck?

  45. December 6, 2007

    Gary,
i’ll leave a better response to QOTD later, but here in the UK it’s 11:15pm, and i have to pick up my mom from the airport at 6am tomorrow morning. But…..
QOTD: what ever happened to the Vayniac Cab label contest?!?!?!
or who can put the biggest winelibrary logo on anything. eg, i could paint it on my truck, or someone could paint it on a wall.
i keep being told that size matters.
i’ll give a better response when i’m back from the airport tomorrow
    love the show

  46. December 6, 2007

    GrapeStuff

    Rats…oh well, next time.

QOTD: Sticking with the user-generated content idea 0- how about having people post 10 different tasting notes on ten different wines and then picking a winner at random.

    Cheers, GV.

  47. December 6, 2007

    Jimmy S

it’s a smurf under the jets deal!

next contest – you create the ability for us to create our own widgets with our data. widgets could include “now drinking xyz wine”, “last wine drank”, “last 5 wines drank”, etc – with the ability to link to your site if you carry the bottle.

  48. December 6, 2007

    KVolk

    QOTD(1): under the football is a Thundercat….
QOTD(2): The next contest should be how many referrals a vanyiac can get for sending people to watch the Thundershow with first place being a trip to a vinyard with the G man!!

  49. December 6, 2007

    Jprva

Since I love Amarone, I had to order three bottles of the Zardini. I hope it lives up to my expectations.

  50. December 6, 2007

    Kipp Bodnar

QOTD: I contest to make an intro song for WLTV

  51. December 6, 2007

    Daniel

Great show and congrats to the winners!

QOTD: How about winelibrary.tv video spoof contest, and i dont know how you could get any better than getting to co-host with you for the prize.

  52. December 6, 2007

    E

No you can’t, because 2008 is a leap year.

Speakin’ of the Obama shoutout, there’s a thought: what should I drink on caucus night? (After, mind you, not before).

I’ve had mixed results with Allegrini: loved the La Grola and the first bottle of ‘01 Palazzo della Torre, but the second was a little green, a little fruity, but not a lot of anything. A bottle full of meh.

Is that Vilm-O under the football?

QOD: well, someone’s got to do the label on that Vayniac cabernet, no?

  53. December 6, 2007

    Colin

GV – Under the pigskin? A thundercat. QOTD – A WLTV jingle.

  54. December 6, 2007

    Bryan Bell

A wine tasting contest with viewers home made wine.

  55. December 6, 2007

    Lindsay

I am relieved you didn’t like that Allegrini. I actually really enjoyed the 2005 and thought it was a great deal. The 2006, though, went down a little in price and a LOT in quality. I was super bummed.

QOTD: I would say host a tasting party with a Wine Library TV theme (like we did in Madison last week!) but I don’t have a blog so that would rule me out. Have everybody take a wine-related photo and put it on flickr. That’s free and relatively easy, and we could vote for a favorite and draw another name out of a hat.

I am apparently a member of the CKC. Didn’t know college kid vayniacs had a club!

  56. December 6, 2007

    ecola

Qotd: A great contest would be for WLTV to take a road trip to a Vayniac’s home and tape an episode.

  57. December 6, 2007

    angryphoton

Gary, congratulations on doing your 365th show. AT 28 minutes average per show, thats around 170+ work hours. That’s like 4.25 work weeks worth of time. Thanks for all the effort.

What’s under the football? My guess it a new Vanyiac Scwhag like a corkscrew.

QOTD: The new contest should be about making a new WLTV t-shirt. complete with a famous Gary quote and graphics.

    AP

  58. December 6, 2007

    jcprice

great show, as always. one quick warning though, i’m in engineering school so I learned this the hard way…playing pencil break with structural engineers or physics nerds brings on a completely new dimension of the game. it becomes intense very quickly.

QOTD: Since you’re a family guy, how about a some sort of family oriented contest, with the holidays coming up most people will be near their families…maybe something like best photo with your family containing at least one WL related object in it, say a poster or wristband or anything. Also, I know it would be hard to put together, but something where the viewers can vote for it would be cool and help people who watch WLTV to get to know each other better. just my two cents…

  59. December 6, 2007

qotd next contest winner recieves……………………………………wine wine and more wine like a limited but insane amount of wine……..

  60. December 6, 2007

    BethB

Great show.. whats under the football…hmmm..a cork to one of the wines you drank tonight. As for the contest, it should be a label design contest for the Vayniac Cab that you are making.

  61. December 6, 2007

    sky

scratch that ….now i agree with ecola……a wltv ep. filmed at the winners house or cellar or favorite restaurant……

  62. December 6, 2007

    Leftcoast

Great show. I think there is a bottle of old balsamic vinegar under the football. (odd-I know)

QOTD- Contest should involve viewers sending in or e-mailing the name of a wine that Gary tastes blind to determine the best wine and therefore the winner. There would have to be a price cap etc. There would also have to be a qualifer round to limit it to a reasonable number of wines.

  63. December 6, 2007

    GrapeStuff

QOTD Part II: What is UNDER the FOOTBALL Question: A football player action figure.

  64. December 6, 2007

    monkuwino

QOTD: not clear if you mean what should the prize be or what to do to win the prize. But if it is what to do, here is my answer: best haiku wine review.

  65. December 6, 2007

    Christopher J

I remember pencil wars, you bring back an obscure memory from my childhood every day. I love it.

QOTD: Whoever can get the ‘tv.winelibrary.com’ link and logo on TV first. Like a sign at a football game, in the backgound of a morning talk show, etc. Could go on for a while, but it can be very fun. The winner would have to supply the visual evidence and the sign for proof. I am trying not to think of something somebody else thought of already, there are so many good ideas already, I have to get creative.

Next Contest: Invite viewers to video cast themselves doing a wine tasting in the Gary V style. Upload it to you-tube or simular video site and have Wine Library and fans vote on the best one.

  73. December 6, 2007

    Michelle R

    Congrats to the Canadian!
    QOTD (football):
I think it’s a new action figure character that you got, who’s been bad and is in hiding.
    QOTD (contest):
idea #1 who can make the coolest, craziest, most awesome biggest WLTV fan website! maybe they’ll upload videos, pictures, etc. but it should all be devoted to YOU!
    or
idea #2 who can sing/write the coolest, craziest, most awesome song highlighting WLTV!

  74. December 6, 2007

    BruceP

What’s under the football? Lionel the thundercat in the little Jets jersey.
    QOTD: Best commercial for WLTV.

QOTD: My first thought was a Vayniac Cab Label design contest, but since a lot of others said the same thing, I’ll keep thinking.

  77. December 6, 2007

    KNode

QOTD: What about a WLTV trivia application on Facebook? I see people with movie, tv, and other various topic ones all the time (and how they’re doing shows up in the mini-feed). But it would require people to watch more episodes of WLTV to know the answers.

  78. December 6, 2007

    Tony Viviano

QOTD: 2 tix to the Superbowl baby!! –Guess I can’t legally say that. The BIG GAME baby!! Cowboys and Pats. Woo-Hoo!!

  79. December 6, 2007

  81. December 6, 2007

    Dr T from N. Carolina

QOTD 1 A paper football autographed by a Jets player

QOTD 2 Produce the Front label for the Vanyac Cab. WL staff pick the top three to five finalists (any info required by law for the label can be posted), then the Vanyacs pick the winner. The winner gets the grand prize. One person who voted for the winner is chosen at random to get a bottle of the Vanyac Cab (or pick until you get to one who can be shipped the bottle or who is willing to come pick it up). (Or two contests, for Front and back label!)

CONGRATS WINNERS! GV rocks again with the last minute bonus iphone?!

Q: Under the football is a paper football (triangle folded)?

    QOTD: GOLDEN CORK WONKA HUNT!
1- Set a range of dates
2- Give us hints as to what the item is going to be.
3- “GOLDEN CORK” a few of said items.
4- Put secret item on sale (cheap, and with free shipping) for a limited time. 1-item max purchase.
5- Golden Cork winners get amazing prizes and love.

  83. December 6, 2007

    Craig MacDonald

QOTD #1: Under the football is a corkscrew with a WLTV logo…the next schwag.
QOTD #2: Contest: Pick three wines and predict how GV will rate them in a blind test. One entrant is drawn to choose the wines, and if that person predicts correctly, he/she wins! (Note: this contest could be entered by anyone who drinks vino, whether they’re tech/video/internet savvy or not.)

  84. December 6, 2007

    Sarah L

QOTD: I think the “butter bandit” is lurking under the footbal.

  85. December 6, 2007

    melissa vv

QOTD: Hmm… What if the winner of the next contest got to go on a wine buying/tasting trip to some major wine-producing region (either in the U.S. or overseas). I’m not sure how big you want to go with the next contest, but a trip to some place in France, Italy, Argentina, Australia, etc. would definitely be a pretty big deal for most people.

  86. December 6, 2007

    Shane

QOTD: World Pencil War Championship for pink slips! Or T-shirt Design Contest or Vayniac Cab Label Design Comp or Table Football Playoff to the death! Whatever.

  87. December 6, 2007

    Kirk

QOTD: I agree….host a tasting party. Video tape it…and send it in. It could be an alternate airing episode for WLTV when Gary has busy days….the prize? The winner should be flown on a 1 week (7 days 6 nights) trip to wine country travel of their choice. Burgundy, Germany, Spain, Australia, wherever!

  88. December 6, 2007

Gary, The contest should be to see how many people the vayniacs can reference to the show. Thanks for another freat show.

  89. December 6, 2007

    RDaneel

I like the idea of the contest being the label design for the Vayniac Cab – should be a fun project with (hopefully) an online vote from all the purchasers to pick the winner…

    Social Project Brian

QOTD: Contest idea: I think people should send in pictures of themselves dressed as the Oak Monster or the Butter Bandit, and you pick the best one, or better yet, let the Vayniacs vote on the best one with their comments. (And you decide the prize – but everyone here loves great wine, hint hint.) Think of the photo montages you could do with all the runner ups in their best OM / BB poses…

  95. December 6, 2007

    CindyW

I’ve recently become addicted to valpolicella superiores, so my new task is to track down some of that zardini!

QOTD: how about a bottle-decorating contest? Or, it could be a contest for best one-sentence description of a wine. Oh, wait, that’s the contest, not a prize. Hmmmm, you know what I’d love to do? I’d love to visit a wine critic during a day of tasting, to see how the process works and to get a chance to watch a pro taste and spit. Another idea of a wine-geek type prize would be a weekend seminar or sommelier class.

  96. December 6, 2007

    chenrys

Another entertaining and educational show…we haven’t tried Valpolcello and we will have to soon. You use Firefox on a Mac, alright! Congrats to the winners,BTW!

QOTD: Next contest – are you asking about the prize or how you win?
For a prize, the wine of your choice, maybe. What about “What’s under the football”?

  101. December 6, 2007

    Social Project Brian

I like the Vayniac Cabernet label design contest idea too. But…. I sorta think designing that label should be a privilege reserved for the Vayniac Cab family (the bottle buyers, the Crushpad members). Fence-sitters and WLTV lurkers who only surface for contests shouldn’t get to weigh in on such a momentous, historic development in the evolution of wine. But that’s just my $0.02. I could be wrong. I’m often wrong. In fact, I’m probably wrong about something somewhere at this very minute.

  102. December 6, 2007

QOTD: I think under the football is a small Oak Monster Figurine

For the competition, how about a case of the Vayniac Cab, a $500 gift Cert to Wine Library TV and a trip out to the Crush in March (or whenever it’s going to be)

  103. December 6, 2007

    Robert Rittenhouse

QOTD: Whoever has the biggest WLTV viewing party!!!
    Under the football: Vayniac Wristband

  104. December 6, 2007

no ideas but I’m sure I’ll enter the next contest. I only recovered last week from the heartbreaking Veoh contest loss!!!! It took real courage to get back in the saddle and enter this contest. I’ll think about it and post later.

  105. December 6, 2007

    William Bedard

QOTD: How often are you wanting to do a contest? I think the co-hosting contest is a really great idea and you should definitely repeat it each year (at least…). If you want to go “contest-crazy” and have something almost always running, maybe you could consider inviting someone on a tour of a winery. I’m sure you could arrange it but whether you stuck with one in the US or opened it up to overseas would depend on how much work was involved (I betting quite a bit…)

G-V-N-C: Great show, Gary! I appreciate the props to those struggling with loss and I also appreciate you putting yourself on the line with the “varietal” shows. It’s a great way to help budding vino-philes expand their pallets.

  106. December 6, 2007

    Marc

QOTD: You should give away a unique experience to “Taste the Culture of 5,000 Years” by giving the winner a China Wine Tour experience from http://www.chinawinetours.com. Visit the cultural sites of China, and some of the wineries that will become well-known throughout the world within the next 5 to 10 years. (and there is no lead in the wine!) ;)

  107. December 6, 2007

    Danny C

    Congrats to Canada!

GV: Great show, I like how you roll, keeping promises, keeping things on a level playing ground! I dig it!

QOTD: Here’s the next contest…we (meaning the vayniacs) create a WLTV Mixtape. Everyone gets to send in one suggestion for a song to be placed on the mixtape. We send the song, and a reason why we think it would be appropriate. Be it about wine, about GV, about the show, about Mott, whatever. You select the best 15 tracks suggested and then those 15 peeps wine something. Or if you’d prefer, people can select all 15 songs and you pick the best mix (15 prizes might be a bit too much). I think we all need a soundtrack and this is an intereting way to bring people, music, and wine together for the big shabang! Let me know what you think either way. I got nothin’ but love!

  108. December 6, 2007

    Jusstin E

The oak monster is under the football!!!!!
QOTD: A great prize would be a case of 2005 Bordeaux!!!!

  109. December 6, 2007

    Robert Howells

The next contest should be a wine blending episode where the vayniacs decide which varietals to blend together and what percentage ratio of each to add. Gary would pick the winner in a blind tasting. The winner will receive a free seminar featuring GV.

  110. December 6, 2007

    Ant'ny

QOTD: Either a trip out to the CrushPad or 1 of every bottle of wine in the Wine Library! Contest to design the next WL schwag.

    Under the football… Knicks tix!

    Peace!

  111. December 6, 2007

    James Freiwirth

Good episode, some great values to be had with Valpolicella.

    QOTD: New wristband?

  112. December 6, 2007

    Rich S

The next contest should be a stump GV in a blind tasting contest. Entrants choose 1 wine from WL, submit them to whoever will orchestrate the contest (obviously not Gary), and then that person will choose 3-5 wines that will be included in the blind tasting. Whoever’s wine stumps GV, wins. There could be multiple winners.

  113. December 6, 2007

    mikey lennon

QOTD: Each month the top 1 or 2 or 5 of the last month rated by Gary on Wine Library TV goes to the winners house for a year.

  114. December 6, 2007

    JC

A solid show Gary, good job! QOTD; I have no idea, my mind is oatmeal, tough week!

  115. December 6, 2007

    Kevin

Ah. Nice to see a Canadian take it. :)
Two Qotds? Football thinger guess: staple remover.
Contest idea: Flight and accom. out to the final shindig involving the Vayniac Cab?

  116. December 6, 2007

    Spinner

QOTD: Discount a cellar from Washington Valley Cellars? (hehe). They were awesome.

Under the football? A mini thundercat?

  117. December 6, 2007

    Mike L

Congrats to the winners. I’m really jealous of both! Great show, too. I keep on adding and adding and adding to my WL cart.

QOTD: 1. Paper Football. I also rocked at paper football and won 3 championships in my school. If I ever meet you, I’m challenging you, GV! That’s right, I’m dropping the gauntlet. That makes sense right? Also pencil fighting. It is on! I have a big A$$ Husky with your name all over it.

QOTD 2. Grab bag contest. Submitters have a choice of sending in pictures with your schwag, blogging about how WLTV has changed our individual wine worlds, or a 5 second clip of us saying whatever you need us to say to make some sort of montage, be it an opening bit, a closing bit, or whatever you want. All of these can help get the word out to more people and it allows you to use everyone’s material to better your show.

I know now why you have your show for 365 episodes and I don’t. I can give you a week of creativity tops!

  118. December 6, 2007

    Steven Wyatt

Ok here is the winning answer for the QOTD:

The next contest is to see who can do their own thundershow (posted on youtube, whatever) Difficulty: no wine, but rather other things that are worthy of the application of a sophisticated palate.

I call dibs on cream soda. Oh you dont think cream soda can be as variegated and urbane as wine? See, you clearly NEED my submission.

Also, Im going to go with an action figure under the football, and since that probably isnt specific enough, ill go with an action figure villain.

  119. December 6, 2007

    orion

    Good show today.

QotD: Good contest would be a quiz of random facts including all the episodes of wltv with a limited amount of time to complete so new viewers couldn’t go back and watch them all (or maybe not, so that they can…)

  120. December 6, 2007

    KC

QOTD: Best 100 words describing your first wine experience.

  121. December 6, 2007

    Rajiv A

QOTD: The craziest wine-related experiment. People would put details of their experiments on their blogs, with links to WLTV. Examples: Peynaud’s distillation – separates tannins+acids from water+alcohol. Tasting wine under bizarre conditions – super hot. Actually I have a better idea – the craziest time/location for a wine tasting! Ex: Tasting Bordeauz at 13,000 ft! Or Tasting at night in the snow.

Under the Football: Robert Parker’s amputated million-dollar nose and palate. No seriously: a small carving of the Oak Monster.

I’m holding the first group tasting of the Princeton Tasters club tomorrow – Wish me luck!

  122. December 6, 2007

    Jon A.

I almost picked up a bottle of valpolicella today, I guess I should have. Congratulations to the winner of the contest, and good luck everybody in the next one (whatever that may be).

QoTD #1: I’m guessing a cork from a nice bottle of sparkling wine (play it regionally safe).

QoTD #2: It would be neat if for the next contest everybody mailed in a cork (favorite wine or otherwise) with their name on it and then Gary pulled the winner from a huge bucket of corks. Or maybe if we get enough he’d have to jump into a pit of corks, like those plastic ball pits they have at Chuck E Cheese, etc.

  123. December 6, 2007

    David Dadekian

Next contest: go to a Jets game with Gary and do an episode from there.

  124. December 6, 2007

    Neil

I agree with other posters – a new wristband is under the football.

  125. December 6, 2007

    Randy

QOTD: The one (and there can be only one) person who has the best forum post, best ask gary (both here and on facebook) question, friended up on all possible Web 2.0 lemming-ware sites, sends in the best intro and best fan video, able to answer by memory which episodes hold the most quotable Gary flavor profiles, and in all other ways the most gushing fan-boy (or fan-girl, we do keep it equal opportunity folks) of Gary and WLTV of all time. I’d just like to see the person explode on camera when they get to bask in Gary’s presence. :)

  126. December 6, 2007

    Paul M

QOTD: (Football) – under the football is a fake superbowl ring for you to keep on your desk as a goal until you can buy the Jets and get a real one

QOTD: (Contest) – Photo contest with best/funniest picture with a WLTV wristband … this way you will actually get people to finally send you picture with the wristbands

  127. December 6, 2007

    Fred Schechter

QOTD For the contest,, create a GaryVee and the gang series of thundercats.

Vote for Mott as Snarf!!! (Panthro?)

Come on,, you know you see it!!

  128. December 6, 2007

    Greg Ztolg

Great show. New wine for me. I bought some. Thanks, and I will let you know what I think.

  129. December 6, 2007

    tarheel17

    QOTD: Contest idea…hmm….
Throw out a list of 10 wines you’ll taste on the show. Whoever guesses your favorite wine of the ten (when you taste them, a day or week after announcing the 10) wins. Or, rather, of the people who guessed your favorite, draw a name.

Who am I kidding, I just want to be in the running for the next contest. I’m sure someone else has a better contest idea…

  130. December 6, 2007

    DaveyDonut

Sweet… you know I love Valpolicella! I’ve had plenty of Mazzi, but not this particular one… generally very good! The Zardini sounds incredible! Too bad I’ve blown my wine budget this month ALREADY… but I’ll think about it.

QOTD1: I think there’s a Vino-Seal glass “cork” under that Jets thing. Answer number two, and you KNOW I’m right, so I should win by default… I think the table cloth is under the Jets thing! You’d better not deny my prize…

QOTD2: The contest for the “bigger” prize… dang it, I can’t think of anything good right now and I have to head to dinner (one of those expense account dinners.. we’ll see what’s on the wine list!). I just wanted to comment to be sure I could compete. ;-) I’ll post again if I think of something good…

    David

  131. December 6, 2007

    DaveyDonut

Dammit… I just watched your review of the Zardini and I had to buy four… couldn’t resist… I love Valpolicella… and this sounds awesome. That wasn’t a very long hold out.

    David

  132. December 6, 2007

    Robert F

QOTD #1: Under the football is one of those wine magnets :)

QOTD: The next contest should have two finalists, then for the final prize they will have to battle it out in a double blind tasting on WLTV.

  133. December 6, 2007

    Michael

    QOTD:
some kind of photo contest would be cool. it could be judged or you could just draw a name from all that participate. plus, you could make a great webpage of all the entries.

  134. December 6, 2007

    ryptide

QOTD1: It’s a smaller jets football. A football matryoshka! Or…. just to throw something out for all the physics/astronomy nerds out there… It’s just footballs all the way down.

QOTD2: Maybe an intro contest? Maybe a contest to create theme music? Wine tasting in the strangest places contest?

For the record, I would destroy you in pencil fighting. I owned my schools in pencil fighting. We also used to do this one where two people would spin quarters around, guess what it would land on and the winner got both quarters. I used to clean up in that one too.

OHH! Maybe the contest should be a pencil fighting or paper football tournament!

  135. December 6, 2007

    Joel Smith

QOTD: For the next contest have us do a video tasting our favorite wine or do a WLTV intro video!!

  136. December 6, 2007

    Cliff and Darcey

DAMN! Darcey and I really wanted to hang with you for a day!

QOTD: Contest idea: a little complex, but … brown-bag three (or more) wines similar, then have a show where you taste them, describe them, and rate them, but you only give us the names/vintages of the three wines and we are to match them up correctly. All who answer correctly are entered into a drawing. The prize? A trip for two with you for a week to the wine-tasting region of 1.France 2.Spain 3.Italy or 4.California (only one, of course, unless … ?).

Thanks G V-N-Ch for all you do!
    Keep it up.

  137. December 6, 2007

    Cliff and Darcey

I forgot … under the football? Your new Vayniac wristband!!!

  138. December 6, 2007

    Justin

QOTD: Does this mean the question of what is under the football thing is going to be a question another day?

I think the next contest should be sending in pics of your wine collection, whether it is a cellar or just a few bottles. This would be a lot easier that the last contest but could be very neat or compare cellars or lack thereof.

  139. December 6, 2007

    MARSHALL

QOTD:You should take a tour of the entire country, starting in New York and ending in Southeren California with two or three lucky vayniacs. You should only go to local cult wineries, and try the “under the rader states” like Michigan and Colorado, etc. ANND!!! document it on video, like the great beer documentary “American Beer.” BRING MAHT.

  140. December 6, 2007

    Harley Stan

Congratulations to the winners of today’s contest!!!

QOTD- a WLTV trivia contest with some obscure questions like first appearence of Jet spit bucket, or which episode featured a Strawberry Shortcake bucket, make them hard so every one has to research all 365 episodes just to get into the drawing. You could make several versions of the test so not everyone has the same questions and send them out via the Forum personal message tool. Then on top of that everyone gets an additional entry for every episode the comment on from the start date forward. We get a chance at really cool schwag and you get a ton of hits to your website, more registered forum members, and lots of comments. I think it would really bring out the lurkers.

  141. December 6, 2007

    Mike Z

Good show today… Congrats to the winner in the Great White North (Canada); peace to all those who need it.

QOTD #1: Under the football is… keys to the store (Wine Library) for a private $500 shopping spree with Gary!
QOTD #2: Next contest- a limerick contest about the best wine you ever had. GV, Mr. Sasha V, and Mott can be the judges to pick the top 3 and the Vayniacs vote for the final winner…?

  142. December 6, 2007

    Chris

QOTD: The prize for the next contest should be a tasting tour with Gary of several vineyards in a region.

Attending a Jets game with GV is a good idea but the football season would most likely be finished by the time the next contest ends.

  143. December 6, 2007

    Cassie

Okay I’m thinking….the contest should be the best public service announcements for the Oak Monster. You know how they have PSA’s for like, smoking, etc? Like that. Its a kind of out there idea so I’ll try to think of something better.

  144. December 6, 2007

    Obama_Man

    Gary,

    1) Thanks for the HUUUUUGE SHOUT-OUT! we’re so pumped up right now!
    2) For the contest:
You should delay delivering the score for one or two wines during an episode and leave it up to the viewers to guess what you scored the wine based solely off of facial expressions! You can even do it for numerous episodes and narrow it all down in the end. Of course, it will increase comments AND viewership!

    Best,

    Arthur
    &
    ObamaNYC!

  145. December 6, 2007

    Julava

    QOTD: Two contest ideas.

    1) Best cork sculpture, lego style. Of course, you would have to provide a topic/theme just in case anyone already has some sort of giant thing already made.

    2) A scavenger hunt. Since everyone can’t be in one location, make it a virtual one. In other words, register a bunch of domains. The first clue forces you to unscramble something, put together the name of a second domain, that gives a different clue to go to the next, and so on.

What’s under the football? New wristband perhaps.

  146. December 6, 2007

    Cassie

Oh, ALSO! I think the winner should get to taste rocks with Gary. That’s my dream anyways.

  147. December 6, 2007

    Malphas

QotD: When are we going to start working on labels for the Vayniac Cabernet? That would be a contest I’d be thrilled to jump in on.

  148. December 6, 2007

    Yiannys

QOTD: contest should be like a scavenger hunt…..You put out the first clue during the show. Then you could use different aspects of different websites the clues could like add up to reveal like a wine. It would be hard work on your guys’ part but I think it would be a lot of fun…
And I got that Idea from watching The Totally Rad Show with Alex Albrecht. They did a thing on the Rocket Race….

    Eagles Rule!!!
    YD

  149. December 6, 2007

    OrionSlayer

Congratulations to the iPhone and Guest host with Gary winner!

QOTD: The next contest should be for we Vaniacs to send in short video clips of a group of people saying: “You, and a little bit of me, changing the wine world!”

  150. December 6, 2007

    Kelly In South Dakota

We all send Gary one bottle of wine and he picks the best for the winner.

  151. December 6, 2007

QOTD 1: Figurine of Marcus Dell Gastineau

QOTD 2: It’s time for the homemade wine contest

  152. December 6, 2007

    Jason S.

QOTD: A trip with you to Bordeaux for barrel tasting.

  153. December 6, 2007

    BillyD

    QOTD football: a million pesos

QOTD contest: make a video about your favorite wine related experience, winner is drawn at random, and WLTV will open with the best segments

  154. December 6, 2007

    djs

Contest should be guess want wine is in a brown bag (with a few clues from Gary). Under the football is a GV bobblehead.

  155. December 6, 2007

    Mike Diz

    QOTD: Nothing is under there.
QOTD: Label contest. My brother will win!

  156. December 6, 2007

    familydoc

QOTD: A photography contest- one picture to summarize your relationship with the person you love the most- family/friend theme after the openning today. The prize should be that Gary and Mott come to the town where the winner lives to taste wine and maybe visit the local wine shop or winners favorite winery.

The other QOTD: Under the football is a picture of Gary’s wife.

  157. December 6, 2007

    AdamT

Trivia contest is the way to go.

  158. December 6, 2007

    Yankee Fan

    Qotd 1: Paper football!!!!!!!

  159. December 6, 2007

    TommyBoBo of WI

:-) I think there is a cork under the football

The next contest…hmmmm…..Maybe the Forum poster that gets the biggest number of comments on their entry for the Month of January??? Obviously Kahuan, BrandenM, TimF, and many other regulars would have a leg up… but I would actually like to see these people on your show. They have been very supportive you and the show and think they should get a chance to get their 15 minutes of Vayniac Fame! think about it :-)

  160. December 6, 2007

    Adam J

You keep upping the ante with all these contests.

QOTD 1: a snarf action figure is under the football.

QOTD 2: Submit a story or a video about how you would spend a perfect day.

  161. December 6, 2007

    TGatesman

QOTD#1: Lion-O is under that football sporting his ever popular Jets jersey.

QOTD#2: I don’t want to be that guy that copies someone else but I really like Jon A’s idea about sending it a cork. It would be awesome to see how many corks you would get from all those Vayniacs

  162. December 6, 2007

    prplhaze

QOTD #1: A newly designed WLTV wristband.

QOTD #2: The next contest is to fly out to pick up the very first official bottle of the Vayniac Cab, along with a week in San Fran.

  163. December 6, 2007

    Tommy Vernieri

Question of the Day: I bet you’ve got the next piece of WLTV schwag hidden under there.

The Other Question of the Day: The contest should be what I said last time around. Ask the Vayniacs to get their friends together and host tasting parties. The host and all of the friends post some sort of tasting note or blog entry about it and link back to WLTV. The host sends you some links to their friends’ tasting notes to enter the contest (it counts as long as there are at least two friends involved).

The prize should be that you fly out to the winner’s town and throw a big tasting party with them and their friends. Wine and cheese provided by Wine Library and Gourmet Library.

Oh, and I should get a few extra entries for the awesome idea.

  164. December 6, 2007

    Hamid Z

QOTD: A possible contest could be like a “Raising Wine Awareness” competition of some sort… not really sure on the details, but you’re a pretty creative guy.

Also, I have no Idea what is under the plastic football… not corks, that can’t contain the Iron Sheik either, and you’re wearing a wristband, so… I believe it is the counterpart to the BigAssGlass, the SmallAssGlass!

  165. December 6, 2007

    antony

Hey – just knowing that my name was in that lunch-box doubled my Thursday night excitement. The next contest:
Who can dress up their pet to look most like Gary. Nah… Most interesting use for an empty wine bottle… Erm… Best video of a wine inspired son, dance or variety routine. I could customise my escapology routine.

It’s late in the UK. I got to go to bed. Underneath the half plastic football there’s some red table cloth, a human hair… and maybe a sock worn by some football player I never heard of.

    Thanks for all the fun,

    a

  166. December 6, 2007

    Phocion

QOTD: Contestants have to make some sort of advertisement/commercial (video) for Wine Library.

Winners get to be on an episode AND an iPhone (or a phone with Google Android on it, depending on when this competition will be held).

  167. December 6, 2007

    FTBoomer

QOTD: Best spreadsheet of Gary’s scores

  168. December 6, 2007

  171. December 6, 2007

    John P

Congrats to the winners, it was exciting….a great show !!
Gary, you got me started on Le Ragose Valpolicella and I loved it.
Now I’ll try these, except for maybe the first one. You know,
I would love to try the one you dumped, just to see how bad it was…
QOTD: A small bottle of Valpolicella
QOTH: I wish we could do a contest where you “Sniffy Sniff” the screen
    and guess the wine. LOL

  172. December 6, 2007

    Kev and Ams

QOTD: Under the Jets ball is a gift certificate for Wine Library.

QOTD 2: The next contest should be for a shopping spree at WL and dinner with Gary and Mott.

  173. December 6, 2007

    Kev and Ams

QOTD 2: The next contest should revolve around being a 30 year old named Kevin and living in northern California. =)

  174. December 6, 2007

    Andre

QOTD1: There is a dime (i.e. 10 cents) under the football.
QOTD2: The contest should be something involving using past WL episodes. Perhaps who can create the best montage video using snippets of previous episodes? That could be really hilarious.

  175. December 6, 2007

    Araldite

Under the football – Thunder Cat

Contest prize – remember the old toy store contests? Five minutes, all you can grab (wine bottles only), at the Wine Library store. Or make it a minute, whatever. You could film it and then critique their selection.

  176. December 6, 2007

    Cliff

great show gary! qotd- grand prize doing a show with you at the vineyard of the Vayniac cab.

  177. December 6, 2007

    boegemann

Under the Football: a Cuban cigar (too many peeps saying T-cat!)

QOTD: A name is selected and Gary goes to the home of the winner, goes through his/her wine collection and makes some selections, sits down with them and does the show. Of course… WL re-stocks the person’s cellar afterwards.

  178. December 6, 2007

    Bobby B

QOTD: The Thundercat ring thing that you put in Liono’s back to make his eyes light up.

  179. December 6, 2007

    J Cray

QOTD: Yo, let’s have it like “The Apprentice” or “Hell’s Kitchen” where 5 contestants run the Wine Library floor for like 2 hours each. Whoever sells the most wine, or the most of a specific “try to sell these wines” wines will win like a cheeseburger. Or a bottle of their choice up to 3,000 dollars or something like that…YEAH! Shoot yeah, the winner will get a Wine Library shopping spree up to 3K and the camera will follow them around and it will be a whole episode of Wine Library TV. That’s hot! I’m sorry if someone already mentioned something like that but my idea is the best best best!
Hey, GV, when you say “leave a comment on today’s show” you give some extra time for us Vaynerheads overseas right?!

  180. December 6, 2007

    John S.

QOTD1: Under football a new wristband Or your having a little Vayniac and there is a picture of the ultrasound under it.

QOTD2: The new contest should be a Golden Ticket(s) have it where you have to get something off the site and randomly throw the ticket inside the box or have already placed it inside of a shirt or something else where is me a luck of the draw.

  181. December 6, 2007

  183. December 6, 2007

    michelle

Congrats to my fellow Canadian! Can’t wait to see the show. Excellent show!

QOTD: I’m not very inventive, but I like the cork idea, a nice little contest for us technophobes who do not know what a widget is :)

  184. December 6, 2007

underneath the football there is clearly another smaller football.

the next contest should be an internet based choose your own adventure. contestants will have to use their knowledge of the jets/wine/new jersey/belarus etc. in order to choose the correct path from each web page. the winner is the first to get to the endpoint successfully.

under the football is a paper football

next contest… pick out a few wines and put together something like the thanksgiving package (i.e. make it available @ WL), allow a certain amount of time, and have people taste and score the wines and send in their tasting notes first, then do an episode where you taste the wines yourself and draw from someone who sent in their comments

you said when you do episodes on styles of wines you like they tend to be disappointing… how about a pv episode, see if you can break the cycle

I think there is a wine stain under the football.

The next contest should be a photo contest. The picture has to have a wine theme. You could narrow down the pics and then have a vote off by us.

    Trish da' Dish

OK, so now we’re all WLTV “badged up.” But, Gary wants more. More! More! So I’d like to answer his QOTD, “on the QT” :-) ……
The next WLTV contest should require all of us to send Gary a picture with ourselves in it, and it should be required that we all include some sort of WLTV theme/tie-in in our pictures. BUT– each photo should be required to contain at LEAST one family member, or friend, in it. And these folks should also be ID’d in the e-mail that accompanies each picture. We all know that we all doshare Gary and WLTV with our family members and close friends already (I know that I’m always bragging about how much Gary has wine educated me to my friends n’ family :-) , so why not? Gary’s job would be to combine all of our pics into a poster, or something, and create a compositesnapshot of just how big the “WLTV Family” really is….people could then buy mugs, a t-shirt, whatever, based on this group photo, in which all of us participants/WLTV family members are present (although we’d all be microscopically sized)!

  218. December 6, 2007

    Kevin Grove

QOTD: My idea comes from the wine pack that you sent out over Thanksgiving, which seemed really popular. You set up another 3 wine pack that people can buy. The contest is that they have to make a video tasting the three wines and send you a link to where its uploaded. Anyone who does it gets entered to come on your show and taste the same three wines with you. Plus after the contest is over you can link up all your favorite ones for all of vaynernation to see. You could set some limits that it has to be between 5-10 or 10-15 minutes and has to involve at least a sniffy-sniff and tasty-taste of each wine.

  219. December 6, 2007

Awesome show, Gary! I tried my first Valpolicella about 2 weeks ago, and I liked it. I think I am a bit partial to Italian wines anyway, but thanks for giving me a couple more to hunt for.

QOTD: I think that the next contest should be something to do with facebook and your ask Gary V application! I post in there every now and then, so why not? It will get a lot more people to join up. If not FB, then perhaps something to do with a photograph of a Vayniac in a some public place doing something significant wearing the wristband. I think that would be radool….

    Gary,
You were right on Nightline when you said this show isn’t about wine, its about life. You always keep things in perspective and I appreciate how uplifting watching your show can be. Two nights ago my wife and I were discussing when we would take our three month old daughter to the mall to get her picture taken with Santa. Luckily we didn’t decide on yesterday because we would have taken her a mile down the street to the westroads mall were Santa’s village is set up right in front of the von maur. It was a tough day for many of us here in Omaha as we shared similar stories about having just been there or our plans to go there soon and how it could have just as easily been us or someone we loved. Watching WLTV has been especially enjoyable the last two days as a break from the non-stop local coverage of this horrible event. After watching this episode I went up to my daughter’s room, pulled her out of her crib and just held her and stared at her in the dark for half an hour. I can’t recall the last time I was as overwhelmed by love as I was tonight.
From my family to yours (and all the vayniacs)…cheers.

Contest – Fill an oak barrel at Crushpad with corks and the prize goes to whoever gets closest to the total.

I love Valpo, just haven’t tried any lately. You can be damn sure I’m gonna get me some of that Zardini. I love that you did Valpo today. Some other ideas for episodes… Mosel Saar Ruwer Kabinetts vs. Australian Reisling; Finger Lake or Long Island Cab Franc versus Loire; Savenierres – I’ve never had one but would love to hear your take on a couple of them.

  236. December 6, 2007

QOTD: the next contest should be to travel with the WL crew to an industry tasting to watch and learn about the interaction between the wine producing and retailing businesses. What can I say GV I am a college student studying business. Gotta love a mix of two of my favorite things.

BTW, Gary could you do a show with a complete tour of the WL? I know you kind of did little ones here and there throughout earlier episodes, but a complete tour would be awesome. Some of us don’t live in NYC or NJ.

    The Original Marc

QOTD: I think it’s already been done, but now that the viewing audience is so much larger, how about contest for whomever can get the most new people on WLTV, using comments as witness.

  256. December 7, 2007

    Fiorentina!

    Hey Gary-
Thank you for doing a Valpolicella show….This is a wint hat I absolutely love, but nobody from where I am agrees….weird.
QotD – What’s under the football? I really would like to say a eye of thundera toy, but I’m going to go with a little boring….like a random cork.
QotD – The new contest should be either basic like 1) “The Thunder Show Intro.” where we have to make the intro to your show or something random like 2) “greatest wine invention/accessory” where we have to make something that benefits wine or the wine experience somehow. Here anything goes, however, someone that invents something original would benefit wine/the wine experience more than someone who takes a corkscrew and puts glitter all over it…..unless, of course, you like that sort of thing.

  257. December 7, 2007

  258. December 7, 2007

Underneath the football? No idea. Maybe a WLTV bottle opener? Keys to the Wine Library? I like that idea.

QOTD: I haven’t read many of the other comments under me so I apologize if I’m repeating a previous idea, but here’s mine anyway. I actually have two, both simple. First, I just want to note after reading some of the ideas – I don’t think the contest should limit entry. Let’s not discourage devoted Vayniacs and/or passionate wine lovers by making the contest too cleaver or challenging.

Contest idea one: Make it to comment and maybe mention a “secret” word in your comment. Have the contest open say a week or two. Then you pick a day from that period of episodes and everyone who commented that day goes into the bucket. That way everyone has to comment daily and you get the lurkers into the habit of commenting regularly.

Contest idea two: Everyone who doesn’t already have a Cork’d account, signs up, then the contest is for everyone to review a wine, or vintage, that wasn’t already on the site. They email you a link to their review or something. That way we all benefit in sharing our thoughts on new wines and help grow the database of Cork’d.

Winner: Flies out to the Wine Library to do some sorta shopping spree, their selections are then shipped to their home. Also, they could spend the day with you (if they could stand that LOL) checking out what a “typical” day is like at The Wine Library. Maybe even make an appearance on the show.

Or an even crazier idea, you could fly out to them and do an episode of WLTV from their home, work or whatever.

  259. December 7, 2007

QOTD: The contest should be an online scavenger hunt.

Under the Football: The new WLTV foil cutter.

  261. December 7, 2007

QOTD: Corked (Cork’d?) creations contest. Each viewer creates something out of a cork (or 2, or more) and sends you a photo of his/her creation. Folks could vote on the winner, or a random winner could be drawn from a… um… lunch box. Anyone looking at these creative works of art must be able to tell that they were made from corks–no deconstructing a cork so much that no one can tell what it was in its former life.

Or maybe a chalkboard contest. Each viewer writes/draws on a chalkboard similar to the one on the wall behind you (or on a small area of a larger chalkboard, since I suspect some folks have access to big ol’ schoolroom chalkboards instead of personal boards). The chalkboard message/design has to convey a specific theme. I don’t know what the theme should be, but there ya’ go.

Or I dunno, make us record our own wine tasting videos. (I’ll be shocked if that hasn’t been tried as a contest before.)

Under the football: A… wine cork? I’m sure others have guessed that, but that’s the first thing that comes to mind. And not just any wine cork. A special wine cork. I don’t know how special… maybe one of your favorite wines. Maybe corks from 2 or 3 of your favorite wines. Or maybe it’s some fancy shmancy gizmo that I’ve never seen before. Hmm.

Valpolicella: I don’t think I’ve ever had one before. But I will, and soon–if I can find a few at wine shops.

Congrats to the widget contest winners!

And “be at peace” to the departed.

  262. December 7, 2007

    Great show as always!

QOTD: The next contest prize should be:

  263. December 7, 2007

    LeeInSC

    OOPS! forgot the contest:

Simply have a secret word every day for a month and everyone has to email the 20-or-so words in to WLTV to win.

Then the names of the folks with correct answers are drawn on the show.

Under the Jets football? A smaller Jets football?

QOTD: I’d love something a bit more graphic. We’ve done video contests, web contests. How about the label for the Vayniac Cab or a new T-shirt design?

Bring out the missionaries! Who can convert the most people to WLTV…and get them to leave comments. I know there is probably no way to tell who is commenting on who’s behalf. I just want there to be a way to be rewarded for what I’m already doing – converting the masses into Vayniacs.

  268. December 7, 2007

    Great Show!
QotD: Under the football? How about a usb flash key with all the contestant’s emails which Mott just printed the slips from.
QotD: I think next time you fly yourself and the winner to the winery of their choice to taste their favorite wine together. That would make a fun episode!
    Peace!

  274. December 7, 2007

    MagnumGourmet

QOTD #1 – Either a cork from a special bottle, or the new version of the wristband.

QOTD #2 – Make it a WLTV riddle. Pose a question that is answered in a historical blog so that people have to go back a revisit old episodes.

  275. December 7, 2007

    Mark Grapengater

    BAH! I didn’t win.

QTOD: The contest: Film your own version of the WLTV Thundershow. The Prize: 12 months of wine, hand-picked by the man himself, plus a spot on the show, tasting the 12 months of wine– or some of them– no, screw that, all of them!

QOTD: No great ideas for the contest, because I’m not into all the electronic stuff. But I thought the wine cellar episode was great and I think any of the viewers would love winning a collector’s bottle of wine.

BTY: We don’t all work for GV. Most employers won’t allow access to sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. and since I spend my entire life in the office I can’t participate in most of those things. So whatever the contest, make it accessable to everyone.

Don’t forget – - Sauvignon Blanc vs. Albarino taste off. Coming up soon I hope!

My idea for the next Great contest issssssssssssssssssssssss. “Design a wine label”

Best design wins a 5 minute shopping spree at WLTV to scoff as many bottles of wine as possible.

  287. December 7, 2007

    Lynne

Great show, Gary, as usual. My condolences to your friends’ families. Even if we all took more time with our families and friends, it still wouldn’t be enough. You can never get enough of something you love.
I couldn’t leave a comment yesterday OR watch the show for that matter as the weather here put out our satellite connection. So your contest rule STINKS!
Therefore, My great idea for a contest will just have to wait until next time.

  288. December 7, 2007

    Sharon

QOTD1: Under the football are Jets tickets.
QOTD2: The next contest could be for Vayniacs to submit the funnest or most entertaining or educational wine-related story. Winner is taken on a Napa Valley wine tour or producer visits or even better, Tuscany or Bourgogne wine tour :-) .

  289. December 7, 2007

    SS Chris

QOTD #1: Under the Football: One of your BobbleHeads fell over and the head broke off…so either a Dwight Schrute or Gary Vaynerchuk broken BobbleHead head.

QOTD #2: It seems many people are confused on this…..providing you with what the prize should be rather than what the contest should be. I believe you’re looking for the latter. I like the idea about some kind of WLTV/Gary/Vayniac Trivia Contest. Could be fun having us scour for obscure WLTV details

Another idea, outside of the contest question….lets call it a new WLTV Feature….I think the time has come for a “Vayniac Hall of Fame” if you will. Not sure how often…perhaps once a quarter you would induct someone into the Vayniac HOF….decided on jointly by you and Mott…and then, moving forward, perhaps previous HOF inductees would get a vote too. There would be some kind of prize for this. While it makes sense to keep the contests open to as many people as possible, this would be a nice way to honor your long time & loyal Vayniacs. You gotta admit…that’s a pretty good friggin’ idea!!! What say you Mr. Vaynerchuk?? :-D

  290. December 7, 2007

    Ryan D

Congrats to the winner!! At least someone gets airfare, if I’d've won it would have been just a car sent to my house, hehe.

QotD: Got a few ideas here. 1. A WineLibrary Shopping Spree. 2. A “five-finger discount” tour of Gary’s personal cellar [the discount comes in with the couple cases of wine you walk out with]. 3. Gary flies to your hometown and fully caters a top-shelf wine tasting.

  291. December 7, 2007

    Richard LeBlanc

Great show…congrats to the fellow Canadian who won the guest host contest. QotD: Possible contest: how about you reverse the guest host contest? You and Mott pick a name, you go to wherever the winner is from, you go wine shopping together and you taste the results. Everyone likes a road show every once and a while.

  292. December 7, 2007

    hugh

Next contest….a one week paid stint as a wine consultant at Wine Library, culminating in a “retirement” dinner with choice of any bottle in the store

  293. December 7, 2007

    Alex

QOTD: Best Video Parody of WLTV’s very own GV. You & Mott can narrow it down to the top 10, and then open up voting for a week or so. Prize: Gotta go with shopping spree at WL, or even better: A case of a fantastically difficult to find wine (that might get absurdly expensive though).

  294. December 7, 2007

    Pardus

    QOTD1: Nothing
QOTD2: I don’t have an idea that I don’t already see in the gazillion replies already.

Next contest…a bingo board – who fills it out first based on a certain amount of episodes – they need to try one of the wines that you have reviewed and save the recipt. Mail it in and win! Something like that – it will make people actually drink more wine rather than just watch you.

  297. December 7, 2007

QOTD: I think the prize should be a bottle of each of the wines you’ve rated as the best from all of your shows!

  300. December 7, 2007

    MB Dallas

Gary – my contest idea: It should be something that makes people taste wine, as the main goal is to get us to develop our palate & try new things. How about taste 2 wines you’ve never tasted before (preferably varietals you’ve never tasted), post tasting notes on Cork’d, and submit them to you.

  301. December 7, 2007

    davidB

Great show and way to go Cananda – hey they need some love now and then…

forgot the football – a cork!

  303. December 7, 2007

    Grasshopper

Sensei, fun episode and I will definately try a Valpolicella!

QOTD – Since you put such high importance on freinds and family (Love you for that!) I think the contest should be about the person who can do a family/friends Holiday video and get as many members of their family involved as possible. The person who submits the best video showing members of their family enjoying wine at the Holdays wins $500 – $1000 worth of WL wine to host their next family gathering. Would tie in Family, friends and the Holidays and could be run now through the Holidays.

    Take care,

    Hopper

  304. December 7, 2007

    Grasshopper

Oh – forgot to make my guess on the football….

    Iron Man

GV, thanks for the heads-up on Zardini!! will be checking it out!

QOTD: hmmm….what would a wine lover like as a prize??? Wine? maybe? Winner gets not 1, not 2 but 3 picks (that is 3 bottles) of wine from Gary’s own wine cellar…..ok, maybe just 1, just 1 pick.

I just read through the preceding ideas. You are set for contest ideas for some time. My suggestions are already there, but with the holiday season here it seems like a natural to have folks send in pictures of family or holiday parties. Maybe prominently display a wristband, or a WLTV sign, or a picture of GV in the setting.

I also like the cork idea, could make quite a pile.

    Prize?

I think having GV travel to one of our homes and host a wine tasting party is a great idea.

My favorite wine shop in Minneapolis celebrated 75 years this year and gave away 75 bottles of wine. Needless to say there were a lot of entries, many from me. Unfortunately I have to continue buying my wine this year. You could give a mixed or solid case of ?? Just figure some way to be able to get it to Minnesota.

A vineyard tour with Gary – nice idea, pretty pricey for travel.

I think less expensive prizes can be done more often and involve more people. At some point down the road here, if it isn’t going on already, some channel is going to initiate talks with GV to host a show, and then there can be all kinds of drawings, contests, and prizes. GV can then do tasting in a different location every day.

  313. December 7, 2007

    habeen-

Which wine shop do you go to? I travel to Minneapolis all the time!

  314. December 7, 2007

    GV,
    QOTD: ?
Contest: My wife and I love to have wine tasting parties and every time we have had one…it is a huge success. Not to mention, we purchase a ton of wine prior to the event. Next Contest: Road Show: The winner of next contest would receive an all expense wine tasting with you as the guest…and your wife. Food parings, protocol and Thunder! To win, each contestant would have to describe their best idea of what the night would “look” like…that way, WL would have the opportunity to choose which one best fits what you would like to do. So…contestants get to dream about a wine tasting event, you get to choose where you would go, then, Mott could film the event and post on a future episode of WL TV.
    I think it has “legs”!

  318. December 7, 2007

    hasbeen

I have had a few wine tasting parties at my house, bringing in a sommelier to educate the crowd. I would certainly do that again and send a picture for a contest.

hey, how did my user name change before? Had to add another comment to make sure I am elgible.

  319. December 7, 2007

    Larry The Wine Guy

Idea For Contest…..Who can go out and promote more people in one week to e-mail gary by visiting WLTV’s website. The body of the e-mail would have to contain the Name And E-Mail address of the person who referred them to the website to E-Mail GaryV. The Prize….Gary arranges the winner and 1 guest to be invited to Pinot Boot Camp In Oregon by getting an Oregon Winery To Invite That Winner and Gary picks up the airfare and accomodations for the week. I think like the widget contest my idea offers a great prize but also draws more attention and support to WLTV and The Wine Library. I know I would be personally knocking on every door in my neighborhood and to every person I spoke to to get them to E-mail Gary and to mention my name!!

  320. December 7, 2007

    Smith MBA

QOTD: Ok – this is the small is the new big Seth Godin inspired contest.

The sneezer contest. You get two people to post on Wine Library everyday for a week who have not yet posted, separate IP address or whatever to confirm they are actually others. So the winner is you the person who refers the two newbies and your two buds.

So for each person over two who lists you as a reference and posts each day for a week in the comment section you get an entry. Maybe a little complicated to sort out.

I don’t know about the prize because they are usually better than what I even think of.

Also, under the Jets Football is Erik Kastner’s kid.

  321. December 7, 2007

    spaetm

    Next Contest –
I like some of the ideas I’ve read from the other comments. Having you come by for a tasting party would be great. I also like some of the ideas about tasting new wines for the entry to the contest. Although I think it should be more about tasting objects with the wines, like what you did on Conan or Ellen. Gary, make the masses eat dirt and bacon.

I’m not sure you could beat me in paper football by the way

Maybe you could incorporate that into the contest. How can you have a paper football tournament over the internet?

    Thanks for all the fun.

How many posts do you have to have to not be a lurker?

Under the football? The moldy cork from yesterdays cellar episode?

  327. December 7, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

My contest idea should not involve blogs or adding badges to websites. My site is professional as is my blog and putting anything about wine on it would have negative repercussions. I would suggest the best descriptor of a wine that you can feature but one you already know rather than a crapshoot.
This was a sad week for Austrian wines as Alois Kracher was one of the best, died way too young of pancreatic cancer (not a good way to go) and still has youngish children, and there is no one in his family to my knowledge who can carry on his tradition.
The Valpolicellas in this episode especially the Zardini will go in my collection. Thanks

  328. December 7, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

Also under the football is a new wristband.

  329. December 7, 2007

Great ep Gary. Nice to see you back to form, and being quite generous as I might add.

First QOTD: If it were a little earlier in the season I would have to guess a christmas ornament with some sort of WLTV schwagg on it. What a great gift to get or give to that Vayniak.

Second QOTD: Not sure what the contest should be, but I am sure some the ideas mentioned already would make great contests.

  334. December 7, 2007

    Juicy Jesse

A WINE LIMERICK CONTEST….beginning with “A man from New Jersey named Gary….” You’ve convinced me – I’ll have to try that Zardini.

  336. December 7, 2007

    Senor Sangria

    Fun show… OK… so 2 questions:

QOTD #1 (Under the football): Your Jets season tickets for next year! HA!

QOTD #2 (New Contest): Refer a friend contest. Give people a 3 days to see how many people they can refer. You can use the WLTV forum to validated if they have signed up since it checks your email to be valid. The person with the most referals gets a prize. Examples of prizes can be 2 of your favorite wines, free tickets to the Jets game, etc…

The thing i like about this contest is that it would promote WLTV and also get those luckers out in the open.

    Cheers!
    - Rick

QOTD: Who has brought the most bottles of wine over the last say 3 months at the lowest price per bottle. This QOTD has me a going….. Like, you would have to have the highest bottle count brought with the lowest average price. You would have to have both to win. Talk about marketing………. NO NO NO, you would piss off a lot of Vayniacs with that idea…..forget it….:):):):):):)

    Good idea though!!!!!!!

    Hi Gary,

Under the football….. An action figure…!!!

The contest……… you have one bottle of wine over a certain period of time and at a certian price range… $30-$40 for example or any bottle over $50…etc. which will have a gold sticker under the lead foil cap which you have made special for the contest and “only you” will know where it is and when it is sold etc….. and you can restrict it to Internet sales only…… or in store purchases or both.

The prize……. a First Class weekend trip to the final party for the Vayniac Cab at Crush Pad in San Francisco and a special wine dinner at Gary Danko with you the night before.

  346. December 7, 2007

    Jake Hathaway

I think there is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle under the football. As for the question of the day: I think the contest should be who can get the law passed that Tennessee residents can have wine shipped to them via mail the fastest?

  359. December 7, 2007

    Matthew L

Congrats to the winners. I am truly jealous!

QOTD: I like the iPhone giveaway, but, at the risk of being boring or redundant. I think the next contest should be the same. The idea of co-hosting the show is a great experience. Just visiting the store is fun, in itself. The opportunity to hang out with Gary, Sasha, Mott and other WL staff is a trip. To sit next to Gary and try to find Skittles in a bottle is classic.

Gary…thanks for keeping the show so fun, informative, entertaining, and a “can’t miss” part of my day.

How about a contest of who can make the most posts to cork’d? Or perhaps to qualify for a drawing, you’d got to make at least 10 posts to cork’d?

That would drive traffic to the site and your IT guys should be able to give you a list of names of those with the required number of posts.

    BobM

    Okay, Gary-

First of all, thanks for reminding us of Valpolicellas, a wine I’ve totally neglected. One of the reasons I value your show is that you constantly remind of the great, big, wonderful wine world that awaits us.

Under the football? Hmmm. New wristband sounds like a pretty good guess. I’ll have to go with that.

New contest: I like the idea of some sort of drawing, where everyone has an equal chance. Or you could do a hybrid, where you have one of those “25 words or less” contests for people to qualify, and then draw from the best responses. The prize? Oh, hell I’m greedy. Let’s say accompanying you on a wine-buying to Europe. Maybe a little unrealistic. How about a dinner for two with you at a top restaurant that has a great wine list.

  371. December 7, 2007

    Dusty

next contest should be like the publishers clearing house. have a drawing from the people that post in the forums or that leave replies to the show(maybe have the QOTD your address (if that’s legal)) and then suprise them and show up at their house and film an episode of wltv live from their house or work.

    Trevor Mauch

    … wonder what’s under the football… huh… I have no clue.

Hey, here’s an idea for the next contest:

You know that chalk board behind you? You should pick some vinyard or winery around the world… and everyday, you have a different clue on the chalkboard that gives a small hint to what winery it is that you picked.

Or… heck… even a better way to get people to watch everyday is to simply say the clue during the episode so people have to watch to get the clue.

Only 1 clue a day… the first clues are impossibly hard… and they get a bit easier as we go… but not too easy.

But, the first person to guess it right… gets to fly there with you to do a bit of sniffy sniff on some of their wine and film an episode or two at the winery.

It would be pretty cool and would get people involved and watching everyday.

So… that’s my idea Gar… what do ya think???

  389. December 7, 2007

    Tom N.

Great show, Gary. I love valopolicellas and they are the Italian wine I drink the most of. As a matter of fact I had a Zenato valopicella tonight for dinner with Italian food – pasta and meatballs. My favorite valopicellas are ripassos, which I call poor man’s amarones.

  441. December 10, 2007

    downtnmark

QOTD: How about a prize like joining Gary at the 2007 futures barrel tasting in Washington DC? That’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing for most of us Vaniacs.

Under the football? A cork maybe?

  442. December 10, 2007

    Andy D.

QOTD: A contest based on comments will flush out the lurkers…like it did last time. I wouldn’t mind the contest having something to do with writing about wine. Or maybe just putting together the best WLTV parody (video).

  443. December 10, 2007

  446. December 10, 2007

    Valerie

QOTD: Contest for best video blog of a vayniac wine tasting that will get posted to WLTV.

Under the football is an action figure.

  447. December 10, 2007

    Marcus Pape

Love the lunch box GV! Pour out a little wine for time, family, and friends.

Who doesn’t love a good 49 cent wine?!?! WOW, 63 points…brining the noise!

Next contest… I’m a big proponent of the “wine experience”. Wine is so much more than just fermented grape juice. How you react to a wine is all about where you are and who your with. So, I propose a “wine experience” contest where viewers are asked to describe the best experience they’ve ever had at a winery (anywhere in the U.S.). Blog about it, mentioning the Wine Library TV contest (no major widgets or banner ads necessary), and the winner goes with Gary to the winery and films an episode of Wine Library TV. It would be a great experience for the winner and great promotion for the winery.

  448. December 10, 2007

QOTD: Thundercat action figure? A cork? A Patriots shot glass?

  450. December 10, 2007

    Russ J

So the QOTD was “what should the next WLTV contest be?”, I think. I suggest a creative writing assignment, a theme if you will (like that will EVER happen when a guy who terms himself “not the biggest education man” is involved!). Think of your sister, dude. She could grade them! Yes, I can hear the huge groundswell of support from the Vayniacs……anyone? anyone? Buehler?

  451. December 10, 2007

contest: design the label for the vanyiac cab

  456. December 11, 2007

    Alex Haag

qotd: I think the contest should be a random drawing. Designing a shirt or wristband or whatever eliminates those of us who aren’t exactly “artistically inclined” *cough* me *cough* I say you should make the prize a free bottle of wine once a month for a year. Although it’s not that big of a prize, it’s definitely something that will encourage people to expand their horizons. Plus I wouldn’t mind a free bottle of wine every month… :)

QOTD: For a contest, I would like something objective (drawing) rather than subjective (design a webpage / shirt / wristband). Perhaps some sort of time limited trivia quiz about WLTV based on all 360+ episodes that have occurred? You could ask questions about obscure things that were said on old shows. Announce the contests, give us like a month to review the old footage, then give a trivia quiz with someone like 24 hours to respond (long enough to compose an answer, not long enough to watch all the old episodes).

Suggested contest: send in a radool recipe with wine.

Suggested price for next wltv-contest: Oversea-Wine-Tasting Overseas (fly there, taste, fly back…). I’d love to drink some Australian Shiraz in Australia or some Chilean Carbanet-Sauv. in Chile.

Next contest – should have multiple winners 5 or so –

GV + The Mott should travel to each of the winners and do a show in their house.

    2x GV selected wines.
    2x Winner selected wines.

    Mr.Ambassador

I agree with the “Wine Library TV knowledge” idea submitted previously. It would be fun to gather knowledge, fun-facts and trivia from past episodes. Too bad there can’t be a WLTV Fantasy Baseball challenge; that would be great.

Had to make sire I’d be eligible for the next contest anyway!

YAY CANADA!!! I hope this means there will be more Canadian wines on WLTV in the near future! :-)

QOTD: I think the contest should be related to Cork’d, which seems to have fallen along the wayside lately. Maybe writing reviews and adding tasting notes to Cork’d, along with keeping an up-to-date cellar list. We really need to up the number of wines and bottles on record on that site, otherwise it will just be another “me too” site trying to be like Cellar Tracker.

    Hey Gary

QOTD: A contest about wine would be cool – describing it, favourite wine, favourite experience, favourite wine style, most unusual food match, favourite wine experience etc …

  467. December 12, 2007

    Lindsey

QOTD: I´m with Daniel O – something Cork´d-related would be cool. As for prizes (note the plural), how about a trip to have a private visit/tasting (with Gary V of course) at one of your favorite wineries?

  468. December 12, 2007

    wlburk

QOTD: I like the theme song idea….and the prize would be out of the US.

Maybe a trip to EU or AU and a chance to taste at wineries over there.

or maybe you should come out to where the winner lives, go out to a few of the best restaurants there and then tape a wine show at their place.

    JayZee

QOTD: Hmmm. Let’s see… It has to be a contest that I have a chance at winning… :-)
I guess that means it has to be a random drawing! Ha! How about a “Where in the world is Jason Hicks?” contest?!

  470. December 12, 2007

    John Farrin

QOTD: Give us low techies a chance. Perhaps a jingle or a catchphrase for a WL OR WLTV promotion.
Prize could be free shipping for a year or two.

  471. December 12, 2007

    Natalie Pilon

QOTD: a contest for the best WLTV cheer.

  472. December 13, 2007

    JoeyB

QOTD: Either a Vayniac wine label or theme song. Something that doesn’t require a high-tech mind to do.

  473. December 13, 2007

    pete c

QOTD- masked tasters from WL all tasting the same wines and giving their masked interpretations. Could be interesting.

  474. December 14, 2007

    Darold

QOTD: Easy. What do you want that you aren’t getting? Video submissions. Make it something easy, something fun. People have to send in a video clip of themselves “training their palate” with a good handful of dirt as part of a 1-3 minute introduction to the THUNDERSHOW. Expect my submission soon.

    MannyPants

QOTD: I think the Vayniac Wine Label design contest would be a good one. That or a t-shirt design contest.

  479. March 24, 2008

    Shane B.

Just got around to watching this on my iPod today (3/25/08), and wanna be eligible for the contest.

Idea: come up with a sensible rating system that forgoes numbers. Instead, something like: burn it, cook with it, give it to people you don’t like and exes, give it to people you love, pop-n-pour, store it, buy or die.

What’s the difference between Amarone and Valpolicella?

  488. July 11, 2009

    Fredly

    Adrian aka AnGkEr:
Amarone is made from the same grape varieties as Valpolicella, and it is grown in the same geographic area. But the winemaking technique is very different. For Amarone, the grapes are parially dried before the grapes are crushed. This concentrates the sugars and acids, causes chemical changes to occur in the tannins, produces a darker, denser wine with a raisiny character in the aroma and a slight bitterness on the palate. But the drying process also takes time effort and significantly reduces the amount of juice, which is why Amarone usually costs 3x as much as regular Valpolicella.
There is also an in-between style called Ripasso, where a regular Valpolicella wine is passed over the pomace (the left-over skins and seeds) from an Amarone so that it will pick up some of the raisiny character without all the weight (and extra cost) of an Amarone.
