QotD – What would you like to see baked inside of a pie? Candied Yams….. I know it sounds gross, but just think about it….soft yams with brown sugar baked inside of a flakey crust and marshmellows lightly toasted on top…..come on…you know that sounds delicious!

    Sensei,

Very cool EP and Eric seemed like a great guy. I will definately look for the book!!

Suggestion – you need to watch where you place the bottles when you have a guest. Most of the time Eric was peaking out from behind them…

We have liked NZ wines for a while now and love a NZ Sauv Blanc when floating in our boat. One most have a screw cap and they are very refreshing when it is hot. You are correct that some have gone over the top in the grapefruit characteristic, but still many good ones at good QPR. We usually choose an Alsacian Sauv Blanc or Sancerre for serious food pairings. (Hoppers have come a long way with the guidance/wisdom of our Sensei!!…:)

Have I thanked you lately for all your energy and for making this thing happen?? I guess I just did!!

    Cheers,

    Hopper

QOTD – bake this inside a pie – take pineapple salsa, mix it with a bit of sour cream, and then bake it in the pie on top of some grilled chicken, peppers, tomatoes, a little onion, and some 3 cheese mexican blend. That’s what you want inside a pie.

Now when I think of New Zealand Meat Pies I think of Flight of the Concords. Almost anything baked in a meat pie is great. I like Shepherd Pies that are meat pies also. but you need a New Zealand Pinot Noir for those.

You know how this guy is awesome? He is a Cubs fan!

QOTD: Cherries, cherry pie is the best.

  73. December 7, 2007

    William Bedard

QOTD: You know, a lot of things taste good baked into a pie. I’m just as big a fan of all the “fruit” pies that are our there as I am of the mincement and various meat “pot pies” that also exist. It might be easier for me to think of something that I -wouldn’t- want to see baked into a pie (which would probably sound gross, anyhow…). Agreed, great question.

G-V-N-C: Gary, a couple of comments. First of all, I have to agree with previous comments, the shows with visitors are very good. I like the conversation as well as the different take on whatever wine is being sampled. I definitely wouldn’t want a visitor during a “varietal” show since I really think it would break up the focus on the wine. However, for those types who think you’re “obnoxious” or whatever the “Gary-haters” are calling you these days, I think it breaks it up a bit and might make you a bit more palatable for those types. I like you fine the way you are. Second comment is about scoring. As you well know, drinking wine is a very complex sensory experience. One of the things that I like about your show is how much effort you put into trying to describe exactly what your smelling or tasting at the moment. However, no matter how hard you try, we can’t read your mind to know exactly what your experiencing. By scoring a wine (and more importantly, being in touch with how a particular reviewer tends to score a type of wine…), it helps us to better understand the degree to which you’re enjoying some of the more subtle aspects of the wine. If you (and everyone else…) didn’t score using a reasonably standardized system, that extra information from the review simply wouldn’t be available.

  74. December 7, 2007

    Fred Schechter

    QOTD:
I could be wrong (probably am) but Asagio, maybe a spicy pepper, and Andouille sausage?
    (eh,, why not)

  75. December 7, 2007

    chenrys

Enjoyed the show. Glad you had Eric on with you.

QODT: Hmmm….maybe ham and cheese. …or blueberries. Actually, fruit and/or cheese sounds good to me.

  76. December 7, 2007

Great show – I’m actually a big fan of Eric too! I guess I just like rooting for the young guys in the wine world – especially if they’re down to earth.

QOTD – Apples. I know that’s a lame answer, but Christmas is coming up and my Dad will be making his famous Apple pie. It may or may not be the best in the world, but it’s by far the best apple pie I’ve ever had!

Duale – just bought some through WL and my wife and I are drinking it right now with a pizza hut pizza. And our baby girl sleeps…….oh how Friday nights have changed! (Always for the better)

    Eric A.

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for all the great comments. Was really exciting to be on WLT — I was actually kinda nervous… Anyway, if any of you are in NJ, I’ll be at the store on Saturday from 1-4pm. Would love to meet you. If not, send me an email eric@crusheric.com.

BobM: Thanks for respecting mi cajones! In truth, I think one of the reasons the book worked out well was that I had NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING…WHATSOEVER. So it was as much naivety as balls, but let it be our secret:

sky: Yes, NZ really IS that beautiful. Every morning I’d look out the window at the vineyard and the mountains beyond. And the sky at night — you can see EVERY star. I never got sick of it. If you go, take at least two weeks and travel around the South Island. It’ll blow your mind.

Firoentina: Candied yams in a pie sounds AWESOME!

Hopper: You’re right, some NZ SBs can get over the top. But I think the best wineries there do a really good job blending every year to keep a consistent style. Hunter’s, from this episode, is a great example. Allan Scott, too, of course. You should also check out Huia if you like a bit more a of a lean, food-friendly style — that’s what those particular winemakers aim for.

RB: If you bake that pie, I’m coming over. No question.

Orion: I admit it, I’m definitely not as cool as Dick Vermeil. But I AM cooler than Dick Cavett, right?

Caren: Wairau River is a good choice. Different winemaker now from when I was there, but the stuff is still consistently very good. Strange story: the founders of that winery had to convince all their neighbors around them and the local farming board to let them plant grapes — everyone thought they were crazy, and almost wouldn’t let them do it.

Lawrence: Flight of the Conchords ROCKS! Very NZ humor.

Dave Canada: Love you too man! ;P

Mike L: Thanks man! Hope you enjoy the book!

Christopher J: that’s right… Cubs fans really are the best fans in the world. NZ cricket fans are actually kind of similar…except they can drink more. Sounds hard to believe, but trust me, it’s true.

Fanjestic: Consider me a fan of YOURS!

grace: I’m very flattered… unlucky for you the camera didn’t show anything BELOW the table! :P

Arthur: That truly is a great combo.

Thanks again, everyone! Will check back in regularly, of course, since I’m a Vayniac too.

  97. December 7, 2007

    Kevin Grove

QOTD: Mincemeat with whiskey baby! I love desert pies and meat pies but nothing can touch my grandmother’s mincemeat pie with whiskey.

  98. December 7, 2007

    JonE

No one said cat piss!! You are not allowed to do a New Zealand show featuring Sauvignon Blanc without mentioning cat piss. Get with the program G-Man. Loves me that Allen Scott.

QOTD: In Japan at some of the little french style pastry shops (I know its weird) they do hotdog croissants with ketchup baked right in, they even do versions with sausages. This should be a regular thing at every good bakery.

  99. December 7, 2007

    Hamid Z

QOTD: Assuming you’re looking for something that isn’t usually served in pie form… How about like a burrito. With rice, beans, salsa, chicken, cheese, and salsa, but please hold the sour cream.

  100. December 7, 2007

    James Roscoe

That may have been your best show EVER!!!!

  101. December 7, 2007

    Paul M

QOTD: nice pie with meatballs, sauce and cheese

  102. December 7, 2007

    Mislead Matt

I’m a newbie to wine. I’m 25, and over the past few years my older brother has really gotten into it. I only wish I would have embraced it earlier because it really is good stuff. I for one will definitely read this book, just from his pitch on your show. I’ve been watching for a few weeks now, I’m trying to ‘train’ my palette, I just want to say.. thanks Gary!

QOTD: My in-laws are Estonian, meat pies are regular munchies in their homes. Ground pork and meat with onions and breadcrumbs, deep fried. Everything hand-made, the most delicious yummies I look forward to.

  103. December 7, 2007

    KW

    Fun show!
QOTD: Have a West Indian or Spanish style meat pie.
    What’s under the football?

  104. December 7, 2007

Great show. I just added Eric’s book to my amazon wishlist. Hopefully I got it on there in time for someone to buy it for me for christmas.

  105. December 7, 2007

    Trevor M.

add a bit of jalepenos and onions to the steak and cheese… and you’ve got a damn good meat pie (never had it… but sounds awesome right now).

Kellen Clemons is from my neck of the woods here in Oregon… he’s from a podunk town in NE Oregon. I met him at a damn “pre-marriage” Catholic retreat that you have to go through before you get married a couple years back. So… he may be in Jersey now… but Oregon’s what got him there ;-)

  106. December 7, 2007

    the professor and . . .

Plminer, that sound absolutely delicious!! Gary this was one of your best, the chemistry was there and that guy Eric seems like someone really cool to hang with. Lots of fun, and it came across on camera. You should definitely invite him back.

Either that or the little Greek takeout pies you get at MDW.

  110. December 7, 2007

    Mr.Sato

You truly are reaching new heights Gary. Just stay YOU, and don’t get a big head!

QOTD: Plums, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cassis, and currants… a bittersweet chocolate topping with a little black pepper. I’d call it red wine pie.

Keep on rockin Gary, and best of luck to you on your book Eric, you seem like a great guy.

    Justin

I like having the guests on WLTV.

QOFT from EA: I like what Plminer said: “Brie, apple, bacon, carmalized onions and rosemary chicken.”

    Mr.Sato

Holy Crap Tim, that sounds awesome! Are you Cajun? (I’m from New Orleans, living in L.A.)

  113. December 7, 2007

    Chinon Rouge

Yo GV, your little show has more clout, creative power and originality than anything on network TV. Don’t let it go to your head but the work you and your team is doing is more important to me than the glossy stuff coming from WS mag. You should bring Eric back for another episode. He’s got the right wine dood spark and I think we will see or hear from him again. Keep it up. P.S. More sparklers please.

  114. December 8, 2007

    John Watson

Sounds like a fun book. I bet my wife would like it too. It’s going on the my iwantsandy.com booklist….

  118. December 8, 2007

don’t know… maybe i live in sydney so i find this episode bit boring…. sorry GV, just being subjective……

  119. December 8, 2007

    Evan

Great show. I actually read the book a few months ago. It was fun and educational. Made me want to drink wine rather than make it.

    GV,

How about a show with gifts for wine lovers. I am running out of ideas to tell people to buy me. What is on your wish list?

  120. December 8, 2007

  125. December 8, 2007

    Ernest_G

Argh, I did it again. Went shopping without watching WLTV first. I just came back from the book store and didn’t expect this type of episode. A great episode, I must say.

    QOTD: Ground chuck and potatoes!

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  126. December 8, 2007

Qotd: Meatpies need some spicyness with pepperoni to watch with Shiraz

  127. December 8, 2007

    Social Brian

Smokeyust – ease up on Viddler. We get it, you know how to use the widget.

Eric, great appearance! I’m looking forward to reading your book. Your adventure sounds like “Into The Wild”, but for wine. (Into The Wine?) You have the exact same goatee as Tom Klein, the guy who married my ex-girlfriend out from under me in 1993. Best favor anyone ever did for me – seriously. :)

QOTD: What would I like to see baked into a pie? Either rhubarb or olallieberry. Gary, ever had olallieberry?

  131. December 8, 2007

    Jon A.

Entertaining and educational as always, Gary.

QoTD: I would love to see some sausage, onions, and brie stuffed in a pie and baked. mmm cheese.

  132. December 8, 2007

    Withnail

QOTD: Just like some summers when I was a little kid…blackberries picked from my Auntie Thora’s yard on Vancouver Island (now the locale of some up and coming wineries) and then she would bake them into the most awesome pie.

    Karl Laczko

Good show Gary, a nice dynamic there with Eric, although I don’t think he was too impressed when you overfilled his glass!

QOTD – I loved the sound of that Curry filling, so I’d put a Thai twist to that and go for a Thai Green Curry & chicken pie – a bit of cocount, a bit of chili, a hint of Lemongrass and Lime………

  135. December 8, 2007

    joel delon

Come on gary ! you should serve less wine in your host’s glass I was impressed !

  136. December 8, 2007

    Tzahi

    QOTD-
Spicy Thai Pie, can go with: beef, chicken or vegi…
    sounds good actually, no?

  137. December 8, 2007

    Big Nick

Good to see some more young blood in the wine biz. EA……man you got a set on you to just pack up and go. That would be awesome. Can’t wait til next week Gary, let’s see what you got.

QOTD: I am not familiar with meat pies, but at this little place we go they make a homemade duck sausage that is wrapped in pastry dough and served with a maple dijon sauce. It is fantastic, and it is only meant to be an apetizer…….if they served larger portions it would be a great meal.

I bet you could make it like a Reuben sandwich with the Kraut and Corned Beef, with a side of 1000 island dressing to dip it in, that would rock….maybe I can get my wife to make that for lunch and give it a shot.

  138. December 8, 2007

    PiperJS

Hey, cool, now Gary has an opportunity to wear my last name on his t-shirt! (and no, fellow Vayniacs, I am no relation to Rowdy Roddy…)
QOTD: What I really look forward to seeing baked into a meat pie is Alan Rickman, in the upcoming movie “Sweeney Todd”! But, as that is mere cinema fantasy, I would have to say bacon, gorgonzola, onion and tomato.

  139. December 8, 2007

    Craig

Okay.. I was hooked. The book is on order. Perhaps a Christmas gift, perhaps for me to keep.

  140. December 8, 2007

    Jim in Atlanta

Fun show. I would like to see seafood in the pie.

  141. December 8, 2007

    Randy

QOD: If it hasn’t already been said: I want Gary’s enormous ego baked into a pie! OK, either that or a pound of the best crisp green apples that have ever grown on a tree.

Eric, cool to see you on WLTV, hope the book is selling like a New York Times Bestseller!

  142. December 8, 2007

    Micha

Huh, now we know: Wine Spectator is watching/lurking the thunder-show too! Great Ep Gary. Well done Eric!

    on a rare occasion. Yummy!!

  144. December 8, 2007

    QOTD: Rump steak!

  146. December 8, 2007

  152. December 8, 2007

QOTD: Brie and Prosciutto. I think pears need to be a part of the party, maybe a wine with a strong pear flavor would do it.

  157. December 9, 2007

    Eric A.

Thanks to everyone who came out to WL on Saturday — was great to meet other Vayniacs, not to mention more of the WL staff. These are seriously some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. The experience there is so comfortable and friendly it makes shopping for wine in NYC look about as pleasant as root canal.

Mislead: You’re off to a great start — keep reading and drinking consistently. All there is to it!

Social: Thanks man! not sure I’ve ever heard the book compared to Into the Wild, but what the hell, I’ll take it. Most people tell me it’s Kitchen Confidential for wine, though someone else went so far as to call it the love child of Anthony Bourdain and Sarah Silverman. Your comparison is a little more flattering, thanks.

Big Nick: Yup, there were some balls involved, but a lot of it was just naivety. If I’d really, truly known what I was getting myself into, I never would have done it. But in my case, ignorance sort of worked to my advantage…good thing I wasn’t writing a book about S&M or something….

Craig: Thanks man! Hope you enjoy it!

Micha: Oh yah… all the wine critics / writers out there watch and read each other, probably for equal parts education as well as looking for an opening to attack. It’s a pretty competitive space, where everyone (GV probably being the exception) feels they have to show they know more or better about wine, which is a bit annoying if you ask me. I think there’s room for everyone’s opinions, everyone’s individual tastes. It’s just wine, after all. I wish people in the biz would just drop the gloves, pick up the glasses and have a goddamn party.

Jimmy S: What’s Georgie’s Pies? Was it a store or a brand? I either got pies from the Renwick bakery or from the gas station late at night after the bars had kicked us out.

cgf: Trust me, Richard Betts is a *much* cooler guy than I am. He’s like a rock star, but more importantly, makes everyone else he’s hanging out with feel like a rock star at the same time. You well never eat better, drink better or laugh harder than when you hang out with Richard. He’s a fan of the Thunder Show as well!

Todd Smith: Yup, they’ve been on a roll. 2005 and 2006 were pretty awesome. I tried the 2007 really quickly, in a lineup of about 40 other SBs, so I don’t think I got a fair assessment. But I think 2007 will probably be a pretty good year, too. There was some frost a couple months ago, so 2008 is a big question mark right now (but no reason to fret yet since it’s still the middle of the summer there).

I realize, I never answered my own QOTD: Chicken Tikka Masala!

  158. December 9, 2007

    Big Nick

Come on Eric A. Root canals only as bad the guy or gals who do them poorly. I can give you the name of a guy who is fantastic and will leave you wanting more than one when you visit his office.

  159. December 9, 2007

    AmandaM

QOTD: Pretty much anything cause I love pie crust. It’s my favorite part of every pie I’ve ever eaten. I think it’s all that butter.

I also love cheese, so something involving that would be fantastic.

  160. December 9, 2007

    yowens

  168. December 9, 2007

I’d like to have some seafood gratin in a meat pie, oh hell yeah!

  169. December 9, 2007

  171. December 10, 2007

  172. December 10, 2007

QOTD: I had a lot of meat pies when I lived in Zimbabwe, but I always wanted to try one with lamb.

I like the change-up for Friday with the special guest! It opens the show up for more tangents but that’s what laid back Friday is all about…something a little different.

QOTD: Macaroni ‘n Cheese, with potentially some lobster or crab, Pacific Northwest style!

  183. December 10, 2007

    mike u.

People (Parker for example) don’t get why some don’t like Alsace wines. Both you and Parker have described some of those wines as smelling of Petrol. That is kerosene! So would anyone like the smell of a wine that had drops of kerosene mixed in with it?

  185. December 10, 2007

    daWineGuy

I received Eric’s book as a present and it was funny that you had him on the show. The book was a quick read on the train to work and I highly recommend it. Plus He has love for the Cubs, you can’t beat that. GO CUBS…. GO BEARS….

  191. December 11, 2007

    Craig Mann

I think your Digg this! button is broken. I’m running Firefox/2.0.0.11. As a half-kiwi, this episode has a close place in my heart, however one wine that you didn’t taste which I thought you might is 2004 Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc. I recommend that for any occasion. As we say, get your reds from aus and your whites from the land of the long white cloud. Kia ora.

  192. December 11, 2007

    Paul McCredie

Greetings from New Zealand, What a great episode. I’m really looking forward to reading Eric’s book. I hear the chapter about the
bar brawls is spot on – having been punched out in a Marlborough bar myself!

Like you, NZers are over the overtly grapefruit tasting Sav Blanc. Try pairing the meat pie with some wine from the Hawkes Bay next time. I can see I’m going to have to send you some myself.

    regards
    Paul

  193. December 11, 2007

    MtnCharlie

Great show Eric and Gary. I like guests. I am going to go to New Zealand… someday.

QOTD: Spinach, Feta cheese and onions.

  194. December 11, 2007

    Brandon T.

QOTD: honestly, some kind of prosuitto with beet relish, a menstrual fluid reduction, and breast milk cheese, maybe just a little pickled baby poo

  195. December 11, 2007

    ryan

The best meat pies in NZ are made in a town about midway between Arthurs Pass and Christchurch. The owner of the bakery makes the pies herself, and I would eat anything she puts in a pie.

  196. December 11, 2007

    Andrew

Awesome show, but many Australians are going to argue that those meat pies are about as Australian a food as you can get.

QOTD: My favourite pie fillings are kangaroo and red wine and also King Island Camembert (yes Gary same blokes who make the Roaring 40s) and cauliflower – especially good if bought at the bakery on King Island.

    Andrew

  197. December 12, 2007

    Rich

Very interesting…will consider purchasing the book in the future.

  198. December 12, 2007

    Wade

I dream of a meat pie filled with blood sausage and baked apples and pears.

And I would like to sell them from a cart under the Pulaski Skyway or anywhere in the vicinity of Co-op City.

  199. December 12, 2007

    AlisonD

Its always a great show when a guest is on! Not that we dont think your great Gary ; )

QOTD: How about chocolate, marshmallows and crushed graham crackers?….butter and dough wrapped around pretty much anything tastes good!

  200. December 12, 2007

    Scott

Hey, any wine called “Scott” can’t be all that bad!!

  201. December 13, 2007

    GR8Wine

That was a great show Gary and Eric. Love NZ. Nice when you have guests and they come up with great questions of the day!
Speaking of which, QOTD: Foie Gras with leaks, truffles and morels in a red wine reduction sauce.
That could be kinda tricky but if someone could pull it off I bet it’d be great.

  202. December 17, 2007

    SoCal

QOTD: Goat cheese, truffles, and duck

  203. December 28, 2007

    Dan-o

I would like a “pot roast” style beef and gravy with vegetables – potatos, carrots, celery, onions.

  204. January 29, 2008

    Sev

QOTD: In England I had a lamb and mint meat pie, right outside Windsor Castle, which was killer. Now that I don’t eat meat I guess my first choice would be a Chicken pot pie minus the chicken.

I love New Zealand wines, love them. I just get worried about producers catering their wines to the American palate. They need to do what they do best, and that is let the terroir dictate the wine.

  205. May 22, 2008

    Valentin

QOT: My favourite pie? So here is my grandma’s recipe I’m making public since our Lord has called her: Take a couple of fresh frogs, tear off their legs and put them (the legs) into a mortar together with: some spiders, flies and whatever you can catch in your cellar, bedroom or anywhere else, add some jalapeño chillies, nam plaa sauce from Thailand and palm sugar. Mix well together and wrap it up with pizza pastry. Put it in the oven until a delicious odour is filling the room.

  206. January 1, 2009

    Dessert Wine Nerd

Great show and guest. I like the guy and just might have to look into his book in the future. QOTD: Reduced ice wines into a syrup, then tossed in with a bunch of rice crispies. I dont know if that would even work……just call me a mad scientist!
