    QOTD: The best has to be a fillet mignon I had at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Toronto on my birthday this year. It was AWESOME! The worst… if you can even call it steak… was from a Taiwanese “steakhouse” (and I use the term loosely) that was way overcooked.

    Best Steak: The first time I had dinner at my significant other’s house. Her dad was quite skilled with the grill, and I was completely stuffed at the end of that dinner. Of course, then came “The Talk,” as I sat unable to move…

    Worst Steak: From Dining hall of my dorm in college. The kitchen was having a seriously off night, and they produced the driest, toughest, most overcooked, least seasoned, and blandest steak I’d ever encountered. I swear my fork and knife went dull cutting it. In no way did any amount of salt, pepper, gravy, or steak sauce make even the tiniest piece of it the slightest bit edible.

    QOTD: The best steak is at a little shop off the main strip in Kyoto. Kobe beef steak medalions. Rediculous.
    The worst steak is any piece of cow my uncle gets his hands on. Chars it to a crisp and then doesn’t even have the decency to offer a sauce so I’m left there to gnaw on the dried up p.o.s.

    Best steak….As an non-steak eater it would be Tuna steak at an upscale resto in the Balt/Wash area.

    QOTD: Best was Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. I ordered their standard Angus filet mignon and it was amazing. I now wonder what their Kobe filet would have been like…

    Worst was my mom’s. Thankfully my wife knows how to cook.

    Gary;

    When you felt relieved upon filling your glass, I already was expecting the worst. I can’t say that I’m a convert towards boxed wines. I’ve always believed that after a while, the packaging taints the flavors of the wine. I’ll give the Bandit a whirl with the BBQ crowd this summer.
    QOTD: Best steak: Smith & Wollensky Worst: Sizzler steak house while chaperoning on my child’s field trip. I honestly don’t think it was made from bovine beef. Anyway, go Dolphins! Can you say record breaking season? Happy Holidays!!

    Great to see you do the boxed wines. I am interested in box wines is easy to carry and very nice to carry where glass is not allow but you are allow to bring your on food and drink. Having good alternatives in wine is a real plus.

    QOTD: Two places tie for the best and both cuts were Filet Mignon the first was Boccon Di Vino, Montalcino Italy (had a good bottle of wine there too) the other was Great American Land and Cattle Co., El Paso Texas. These were extremely high quality cuts of meat that was cooked to perfection. Nothing but excellent memories of the dining experience.

    The worse … Orlando Fl. place is now out of business and I know why. It was on International Drive real tourist trap area but I was there on business late it was next to the hotel. Meat was just poor quality all the way around.

    Box wine – I would love to see a “higher-end” winery try this and see what happens. Hopefully someone does it, just like you said – markets change. Kind of like DRM free music!

    Gary:
    Do you think the order in which you taste the wines affects the outcome of your tasting experience?

    I am so happy you did the box wines, but please don’t stop there … please do more as they become available. We haven’t liked any we have had yet but hear that more and better wines are becoming available in a box, and of course the 3-liter boxes are usually a great deal, but only if you can actually drink the wine!

    QOTD: Best steak … a handsome slab one evening that came from an organically-raised free-roaming cow, cooked in our kitchen with just salt and a little garlic. Let the meat speak for itself, if it has a voice. If it doesn’t, then I guess you have to smother it with stuff, but I do prefer the actual taste of the meat to anything else added.

    Thanks again Gary V-N-Ch for all you do. We’re loving it all.

    Best stake: My Porterhouse! Just being honest, I know how like it cooked and what I want on it. 1 1/2 lb porter with Salt, pepper, splash of tobasco and Worcestershire, 8 minutes each side under my broiler. Perfect med rare! YUMMMM!

    Worst: Tayors Steakhouse in La Canada, CA. I go here several times a new with my parents and up until my last time it has always been good. With that said, last time I ordered a New York, which was cook right (med. rare) but had zero flavor, so much so I thought something was wrong with my taste buds. It didn’t taste like beef or even taste bad, just felt like I was chowing nothing.

    Interesting show Gary, the plastic in those boxes worry me a bit also…

    QOTD: My husband’s filet mignon on the BBQ. Worst: too many to choose just one…

    QOTD: Best steak- Porterhouse at Peter Luger’s;
    Worst steak- Filet mignon served on an airline (Delta, I believe?).

    The best steak I ever had was a luscious 2″ thick ribeye medium rare, from my bar-b-que, which I shared with my son and a bottle of Don Melchor 1995 Cab, i can still taste it. MMMMMMM
    The worst steak was a tasteless over priced porterhouse for two at B & C steak house, but the wine was great.

  21. December 11, 2007

    Chris

    The best steak I’ve had was a filet at Ken Stewart’s Grille. The worst, I must admit, probably came from my own grill at some point in time. I’ve gone far into the grey, well-done state a few times, especially shivering by the grill on wet dark early winter nights.

    Gary, thanks for adding a time delay to your latest giveaway. I rarely get to watch episodes the day they come out. Sometimes I’m 3-4 episodes behind. Thanks!

    My best steak would be from Ruth’s Chris steakhouse in Toronto – New York Stiploin.
    My worst steak would be from Morton’s Steakhouse in Toronto – Cajun style new york striploin. Amazing how service changes the taste of food, eh Gary?

    QOTD: Worst steak ever has been washed away from my brain cells, thank my lucky stars!

    Best steak ever: so far has been the grain-fed NY strip over hot coals in my back yard. Or maybe the Angus filet mignon at “900 East” (cooked precisely as ordered).

    QOTD:The best steak I have ever eaten was at home, a Hertiage Foods “Hearst Ranch”-14oz. Grass-Fed Ribeye. The worst was a supposed porterhouse cut at Ponderosa.

    Worst steak: hard to say. I do remember having a steak and frites in Paris at a sidewalk cafe, and I couldn’t even cut the steak. It was some horrible overcooked piece of french rubber. Back then I was too passive to complain. Now I would curse them out en francais.

    Best steak: Has so many good ones it is hard to count. Steak au poivre a la Alton Brown with a good bottle of wine shared with my wife is hard to beat. NY strip is my favourite cut though, with a simple rub of herbs from the garden and a herbaceous red wine. One meal that comes to mind is a steak tournedos at L’Oree du Bois in Chelsea, Quebec with a Gaja Barolo on a special occasion with my wife.

    Dave.
