Hint for Gary: Pour box wines with the nozzle off the edge of the table. That way you can hold then glass and the switch.
QOTD: Best Steak – A beautiful piece from our local butcher cooked on the BBQ two weeks ago with olive oil, salt and pepeer. Worst – An over-grilled, over-cooked new years eve nitemare two years ago.

    The Doc

QOTD – Best steak ever, Plaza 3 in Kansas City, the KC strip
Worst steak ever, Charlie Browns in Fairfield, NJ

Great show. I’ve love to have you try the pinot grigio in a few weeks to see if has stayed pretty fresh and still warrants a good score.

    QOTD:
Best steak is the peppercorn steak at V Mertz in Omaha.
Worst is any steak cooked Medium Well or Well done.

The best steak I’ve had in a long time was a london broil maranaded in cheapo merlot, and put on the grill by me.

Here’s a question: Parker said something (regarding the bottled version i assume) along the lines of cuvee de pena is “the friedliest red wine in the world.” however, you weren’t a fan. Any opinions on why parker made that comment?

GV ~ As I expected, the box wine packaging is still potentially suspect ?

QOTD: Recent best steak would be thin sliced Kobe from Enjin at Lucent Tower, Nagoya, Japan. and worst would be the veggie steak my wife made at my request when I was in a vegetarian phase this past summer.(I don’t recommend fake steak, Ughhh)

Keep the thrills coming GV. Crzy OUT ~!!

    dave from Osaka (thunderball)

QOTD: (Best) Japanese Hida (from Gifu province) beef eaten completely raw with miso sauce…unbelievable.

(Worst) One I made myself not long ago. Couldn’t read the package properly and my wife comes home and tells me that it’s supposed to be cut up and put in stew not pan fried (too late!) Tasted like an old-school Nike flip-flop sandal.

GV, you think I’m a creep cause Im leaving a message only win I can win crap? Well, I just blew more loan money on the holiday four pack so don’t complain!

    ANYWAYS….

Worst steak: I tried to broil a rib eye at home…the butcher told me rib eye’s were good for broiling…well it tasted terrible.. it was the “beefy” taste, as much as that sounds weird, but I mean beefy like the smell of old raw meat…maybe the steak itself was bad, but was the worst thing ever.
Best steak: Little place in Highland Park, IL called Carlos’ … french restaurant run by Carlos and Debbie Nieto… rated number one chicago area restaurant in zagats.

    Peace my brother!

gary – thanks for *finally* doing a boxed wine show! i would enjoy if you would do a follow-up episode in the near future showcasing some other brands.
qotd; best: a ny strip prepared on my grill at home. worst: a ny strip forgotten about on my grill at home.

QOTD: BEST–I can’t remember the name of the place. It’s in Palm Springs and very much like your local high end steakhouse. Worst–sizzler and Bob Evan’s tie it up.

    QOTD:

QOTD – I’ve had Lugers, Palm, Sparks, Keens…you name it, and I love the dry aged slabs they serve up, but the most memorable steak for me was a rib eye at the Atrio Cafe in Stockton NJ that was lightly marinated in Brazilian spices. The worst was probably a thin, gray and chewy little number at a Ponderosa in Lake Charles, LA circa 1981.

QOTD: Best has to be a multi-way tie of 3 out of 4 steaks I had while in Uruguay over Thanksgiving. They know beef.

Worst is my dad’s attempt to cook a 12 lb grocery store tenderloin on the grill. He can do 3-4 lb cuts, but don’t let him get his hands on something bigger…

Thanks for the box wine show, I’ve always wondered.

    QOTD:

Best – Metropolitan Grill in Seattle, about 7 years ago. Steak was a double-thick filet, about 4.5 inches around and 3 inches tall. Don’t know how they cooked a slab of beef that size so perfectly, but it was perfect pink medium through and through. Simple salt and pepper seasoning with a splash of au poivre sauce that had a hint of cognac. Unreal.

Worst – Gaucho in Soho, London UK, 2 years ago – went there twice in 2 months to be sure. Sorry guys, but I’ll eat the marbled, sinewy crap from Outback or Ponderosa before I eat the grey shoe leather you guys were serving at that time. Twice. I had a hard time even cutting it with a sharp knife.

    Peace.

Best steak was in Tokyo with my brother’s soon-to-be inlaws. It was the most beautiful Italian restaurant I’ve ever seen. We had seven courses and a new bottle of wine with each one . . . decadent :) Worst steak? Steak-O-Rama in Long Beach, California– tons of gristle and fat. Yuk!

Thanks for doing this show. I’ve been wondering about boxed wines for a while now.

Because of finals, I completely missed the opportunity to leave a comment for the wine that Dave won, so I’m glad I decided to watch this episode of WL before getting back to my studying. (By the way, CONGRATS DAVE!!! I was totally stoked when Gary pulled your name out of the bucket. Maybe I’ll see you again at another CA meet-up.)

QOTD: Best steak ever was a filet-mignon w/ garlic at a local Basque restaurant called The Star. Because I’m in the middle of ranch country, I can get a steak at a place like The Star that would cost a fortune in New York. It’s truly unbelievable. And for less than $30 for the entire gigantic meal, it’s an absolute steal! The worst steak I’ve ever had was one I tried to make for myself. Oh man, that was awful! If that doesn’t count, then the worst steak I’ve ever had was at a local casino in the middle of the graveyard shift. Drunk as I was, that food was hardly edible. Good thing I had some cheap wine to wash it down with. Bad as that steak was, it was still better than the one I tried to make for myself!

    Michael

QOTD: I haven’t eaten steak in twenty years. so I guess the best/worst steak would be the next one I had.
BTW It would take a wine like that to have me out myself as a vegetarian wine lover from Kansas City of all places.

    Daemon

QOTD: Worst was at L’entrcote in Lyon France. Not a typical steak, and is served with more french fries then what is humanly possible to eat.

Best of all time is the filet from Gene & Georgetti Italian Steak House in Chicago IL, USA! I swear it was perfectly cooked, the size of a 16in softball and by far the most tender juicy steak ever consumed by man.

  21. December 11, 2007

Best – Some steakhouse in NYC, too long ago to remember the name.
    Worst – Hawaiian BBQ.

    Mike Cima

The best steak I ever had was a ribeye I prepared at home with a rub I had made and the worst was a NY Steak on a steak sandwich…just tough and chewy! I love watching the show and love turning new people onto it. Thanks for everything!! -Mike

QOTD: The best steak I ever had was at Joe DiMaggio’s of North Beach in San Francisco. The worst, was a steak that my former stepmother made while she was drunk. It was charred to a crisp.

    Matt

    QOTD

Best: Probably some home grilled fillet

Worst: A greasy spoon restaurant ribeye

  25. December 11, 2007

    Jaded Knight

Perhaps I can sneak this in a day late
    QOTD
Best steak: Omaha mail order steak fillet mignon as a child my parents used to get these
Worst steak: Trendy Manhattan steak houses, totally overrated (that includes the wine offering too)
