best steak… Jeff Ruby’s in Cincinnati

worst steak… I’ve made some pretty aweful steaks, but there was also a restaurant in St. Louis where I had a hanger steak that was overcooked with some burnt sauce… horrible. Fortunately for them, I don’t remember the name of the place.

Interesting show on the box wines. I’ve heard the Killer Juice cab isn’t all that bad.

The best steak I ever had was at Grill 23 in Boston. It was a filet and we had it with a Hamilton Rusell pinot noir. The worst was at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Puerto Rico. I was there on business and was forced to go with a client. Wow was it chewy!!

    Best- Ruth Chris steakhouse ribeye

Worst – my grandmother cooks Omaha steaks on the original Foreman grill. Any one of those blackened jerky cuts would fit.

The Box wine idea was exciting… too bad they didn’t turn out better. I always get trashed at family get togethers because I talk down the Franzia they everyone loves… totally glorified grape juice. Not bad… just like Welch’s, but in a box…

QOTD: Best steak was a Delmonico Steak at Ocean Point Inn in East Boothbay, Maine… The worst.. easily any steak I make myself… I just feel sorry for the cow… like Beef Jerky, only not good…

I had an unbelievable ribeye at BLT Prime in New York a few months ago. I think the atmosphere of the place added to it. They served it with bone marrow which put it squarely over the top.

QOTD: Best steak: The pepper steak in Le Maurai in NYC, i love that stuff. Worst steak: i was at this wedding once and the steak they served was like wet beef jerkey, BLAH!

    QOTD:
Best steak: I had a great porterhouse at Keen’s in NYC 2006, celebrating a product launch just me and my employer. I can’t remember a better steak than that.

Worst steak: When I first came to the US and did not know the names of the American butcher cuts (I come from Sweden) I bought some of the wrong cuts, thinking it was grilled steak material. Ended up with extremely big pieces of gamey steaks, nice surface, but impossible to chew. horrible experiences. My chewing muscles ache when I think about it.

Best steak: Peppercorn & Cognac steak at V-Mertz in Omaha (Nebraska).
Worst: A NY strip from Lonestar that was at least 50% fat. Massive turn-off. They didn’t have enuf alcohol in that place for me to be able to eat it.

  15. December 12, 2007

    Scotty S.

Best steak – Fly fishing trip in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. 8 hours on a horse getting to the spot. Great porterhouse when we got there.

Great episode today! I’ve only ever had Franzia, which was my first exposure to wine (not so good)

Best: This one I cooked up last summer. The stars aligned and it came out perfect!
Worst: Probably at some chain restaurant, came out overcooked or overseasoned. There have just been so many…

  17. December 12, 2007

    Barry

Best Steak: Carmichael’s Chicago Steak House
Worst Steak: Had to be at my mother-in-laws. All my worst would come from her cooking.

Gary Awsome show, so great that you did box wines… Anyway the best steak i ever had was a steak au poivre in NC. The worst steaks are probably the breakfast places for steak and eggs.

    QOTD
Best Steak: Steak Diane at a long gone Cajun restaurant in Westlake Village CA.

I must say that the best steak I’ve ever had was one that I prepared myself on the San Juan Islands here in WA state. The worst…Waffle House steak and eggs…sorry but I had to try it back in the day.

GV…I would be watching so much more of this show, but now that you no longer ship here I’ve kind of let it go. Politics, eh.

Best steak: Some place in Austin, TX, where I told them I what I wanted, and I swear the waiter went out back, I heard a gunshot, and I’m eating sweet, rare filet mignon 10 minutes later. You be the judge…

Worse steak: Before reaching adulthood, I’m pretty sure I thought “well done” was a superlative. So, anything from that era.

Love the show, trying to get a party together for the Xmas box!

    Bill Nabasny

    Great show.

best steak ever was at a place called Gene and Georgettis Steak house in Chicago, very old school and one of the best places to go in the midwest. Worst steak beleive it or not was at Mortons, they seared it until it was black charcoal.

  23. December 12, 2007

    Andy D.

    Interesting show! Well done

Best steak: Morton’s Steakhouse in Atlanta had a New York Strip that I still have dreams about to this day. So flavorful, juicy, and yummy.

Worst steak: buddy of mine decided to get into cooking. He wanted me to try his first-ever attempt at a Pittsburgh-style steak. It tasted like a towel that had been thrown in to a bonfire for a minute then pulled back out.

  24. December 12, 2007

    Marc

Best steak ever… well the best steak recently was at my hotel, the Hawthorn in Arlington WA.. They have a filet with a smoked bearnaise sauce that is killer!!! The nastiest, was at the wafflehouse in Atlanta georgia, like a 6 month freezer burned shoe that my grandpa worn for 20 years! Bad Bad, or maybe it was just being that drunk???

  25. December 12, 2007

    Tom Y

QOTD: Best Steak House is Epoque, Sydney Australia; Worst Steak at El Raigon, San Francisco
