Finally, I’ve been asking for this episode. I’m tired of wasting money on people who pour my good wine into their empty beer glass just to drink some more! :-)

Best Steak:Porterhouse steak w/ crumbled gorgonzola at Cosimo’s on Union in Newburgh NY
Worst Steak: Over Cooked strip steak at a local steak house.

    WE LOVE BEEF!

Best: Bleu cheese crusted filet mignon.

Worst: Tried some of my friends when he got it at the diner at 3am a few days ago, that was pretty horrid.

Best steak: A filet mignon from the Costco in Maui. It was prepared by my friend who is a chef at Domaine Chandon.
Worst steak: Chicken fried steak, with extra patty, from Coco’s in San Diego. It actually wasn’t that bad at 2am, but the next morning i was cursing it.

INteresting show. I have never had a box wine. Nice to know they dont all live up to the reputation of being bad.

Best steak: I think it would have to be a filet I had cooked up for me and my wife about 13 years ago. I had marinated it in orange juice and some other things. And it just turned out to be the best steak I have ever had. I havent had one better cooking myself or at a restarant since!! :) I have had close to that good, but nothing toping it. The planets must have been in line or something on that night.

Worst steak: This is a harder question. Hard to remember having a really bad steak!! Maybe it would be the way WAY over cooked rib eye I had on vacation in FL once. I cant even remember the name of the place. But the seafood was great.

Best steak at Glatt A La Carte http://www.glattalacarte.com (and by the way they have a grate Kosher wine bare and wine by the glass)
    Worst steak…? ……My mother in-law’s.

Best steak ever…..Creole rub Ostrich steak.

    Yes, ostrich.

QOTD: The best steak was at a steak house called Vic and Anthony’s in downtown Houston. It was a great meal with colleagues and the food was exceptional. The worst steak was at a local steak house after they did renovations – they lost the feeling the restaurant had and change their cooking methods.

We once cooked a whole beef tenderloin (which we had gone to one of those free-range, grass-fed, cows-happy-to-be-slaughtered, ranches to pick up) in a salt, thyme and flour crust. After baking, we removed the crust and enjoyed the most tender and flavorful steak I’ve ever had.

There have been so many bad steaks over the years that its hard to point to a single incident. Once I discovered that there is a relationship between price and quality, there have been far fewer horrible steaks. Of course one has to eat far fewer steaks to afford the very good ones.

    Best Steak:

A huge ribeye, BBQ’d at our campsite after dusk in the Australian bush, not far from Ularu. Large red “Roos,” and I mean large, attracted by the raging fire and the smell of food, moved very quietly into the flickering shadows behind us that had been thrown off by the flames. Sensing movement, we turned around only to see the orange and red flames reflected in their open eyes and fur. Eery.

But the beef, well, we tore it apart with our hands and ate like medieval kings…

    Worst Steak:

In an English pub in London back in 1979. It was after midnight when we rolled in and we were starving. But try though we did we just couldn’t eat those godawful steaks…not even if that meant causing an international incident…which it pretty nearly did. The steaks were so bad that we finally had to ask the waiter what it was…he looked at us in disbelief and asked: “What do you boys think it is?” Which was a very bad move….

GV, thanks for the ep. Glad to see that there are occastionally some decent wines that come from a box and might be worth a try.

QOTD: Best and worst steak, hrm…

Best: Filet from Bern’s Steakhouse, Tampa FL (which coincidentally, has one of the largest wine cellars in the US, or so they say. This restaurant is incredible!)
Worst: The Golden Corral, that was a mistake I will not repeat.

    Thanks as always!

Great show, I have always been curious about boxed wines but been to shy to actual buy one. I guess I should just do like you say and pick one up for the hell of it, but after that thoose rave reviews I am still pretty weary. Best steak I’ve had was a New York cut at Ruth Chris in SF. They have quite a selection and I have been meaning to go back…Maybe If I go in and sport an $800 bottle of wine I’ll have an excuse to go agian. Worst Steak: I remember a summer evening when I was proabably 10 or so and my mom made Stroganoff for dinner…it is usally my favorite dish….It has noodles, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream and usally a nice tender meat…For what ever reason the meat was overcooked and super tough…I had to chew and chew and chew it…My mom would not let me be excused from the table until I finished the my plate. I remember sitting at the table for about 30 or 40 min complaining about that horiable meat…I chewed it all up and spit it in my napkin…I then tossed it out the kitchen window when she was not looking…I remember telling her the story yrs later and we both got a good chuckle…Cheers…..Happy Holidays…. Adrian

Best Steak: Honeymoon, Ahwanhnee Hotel in Yosemite, they have this amazing table at the end of the dining room that looks out on Yosemite Falls, there also happened to be the most beautiful person in my life sitting on the other side of the table, and i had the best Filet Mignon ever, (was not 21 yet, did not get to have wine). Worst Steak: let me count the ways, more steak is bad then good, unfortunately, I had a Filet Tip a few weeks ago that was terrible, it had the old blood flavor infused in the meat, that nothing could take away, even a great bottle of Barbera. Mind you I love my steaks a little bit mooing normally, but this was not rare, and thank god, we probably would have got sick. (This was at someone’s house, we had to eat, at least I brought the wine).
Great Episode: I would probably pick up a box wine to try, especially at the price points mentioned. I would probably be disappointed, and wished I hadn’t but, at least i am trying stuff right.

Very interesting episode. You know the first thing I thought was that maybe they needed some time out of the box to air out, just as we do with bottled wine. Just a thought. Steak, now that’s a favorite subject of mine. The best i’ve ever had is a porterhouse at a great restaurant called pompeii in Philadelphia. The bottle of Monsanto 1997 Chianti Reserva is what made me fall in love with wine. The worst would have to be the one I had the last time we went to Sam Seltzer’s, it used to be one of our family get together spots but it’s just gone to hell. As far as chain places go, Longhorn has killer steaks. Anyone have an idea of why wines are tasting astringent to me lately?

Best Steak: Kobe/Wagyu steak at a place in chicago called Yoshi’s Cafe, rare, just unbelievable. I’d never had Kobe and compared to how it’s abused in meals all over the fancy restaurants this was just fantastic! Nothing too special done with it just letting the meat shine.

Worst Steak: An overcooked steak (I sent it back and the second one was cooked even FURTHER) from a fantastic steakhouse which I won’t shame. I don’t know how they screwed up Rare twice. It was upsetting.

    Nice show.

Best steak – American Kobe strib rare off the home BBQ grill. Not the most tender but the best flavor.

Worst – Omaha steaks filet mignon given to us as a gift several years ago. No flavor and a streak of gristle running through them.

The worst steak I had was at Peter Lugas in Brooklyn. And the best steak is at Strip House on 12 street in Manhattan followed closely by Sparks in midtown.

Great show, thanks for the input on boxed wine. Enjoyed the show!
QOTD: Best steak is hands down the Rib Eye. Worst steak (if there is one) would have to be a chuck steak….not the best cut of meat.

    QOTD:
Best steak was a NY Strip that I had at a wedding rehearsal dinner.
Worst…in college we would make a weekly trip to the Ponderosa for the cheap steak and the all you can eat salad bar.

I had the Cuvee de Pena when it first came out and thought it was a pretty decent wine. Tasted it one year later and thought it was one of the worst wines I had ever tasted. I definately think that the packaging affected the taste after awhile.

QOTD: Best Steak – Ribeye on the grill this summer; worst steak – completely overcooked steak at a friend’s cookout this summer.

  23. December 12, 2007

    pete c

Best steak- ribeye at Capital Grill in Chicago
