GREAT SHOW! Looking forward to the rest of the week.

QOTD: I gotta give props to Cova in Houston. It’s a high end wine store that is also a tapas and wine bar. They have an obscene amount of wine by the glass and always have a few VERY high end kind of things. I’ve had Insignia, Ornellia, and 01 Brunello Riserva’s by the glass there. It’s an amazing concept

enjoyed that episode. I still feel the majority of restaurants use their mediocre wines to pour by the glass. A 15-20 bones glass of wine is not a sign. bargain
QOD-Wooden Angel in Beaver,PA. Good wines by the glass, and an excellent cellar with Ridge zins back to the 80’s

neat idea taking the show on the road…

QOTD: that’s a tough one Gary… I guess I’d have to say my favorite is Delmonicos in Syracuse. It’s my favorite restaurant right now, so I tend to always have a good time there and the wine and food always taste great! My second choice would probably be Rosalies in Skaneateles NY. They’re very much out of my price range, but when I get to go there for business we always have a great time – their wine selection is always awesome.

Cool show Gary, but what happened with the $800 bottle of wine from yesterday??

QOD – A little Italian eatery in Vancouver, WA called La Bottega. Great food and a small selection of very well-chosen wines by the glass. Thankfully, $15/glass is not the norm out here in the boondocks!

Excellent show!!! Nice bar……but is $15 the norm for wines by the glass in NYC? Prices are less here with a pretty good selection available at many establishments. Either way it’s nice to see you out and about……….

Love the theme for the week. Glass lists in NYC are a great source of interesting, food-friendly, off-the-beaten-track bargains. (Well, they’d be bargains if you could find them at retail.) A few months back there was a discussion in the forums about how many grape varieties you’d tried, and I was SHOCKED at the number of posters with otherwise serious wine experience who had barely tried anything that doesn’t come from California or Bordeaux or Australia. Meanwhile, with some memory jogging from the linked checklist, I counted up above 120 varietals before I quit. Drinking by the glass in NY restaurants was the source of nearly all of them.

QOTD: Hearth/Insieme. If you could set something up with Paul Grieco either this week (if possible), or maybe when Terroir opens in a month or two, that would make for a KILLER episode.

Or since that’s a touch obvious for any local wine geek, let me also give a shout out to Franny’s in Prospect Heights, where the beverage program is as deceptively serious as the food. Have had some awesome wine by the glass there.

QOTD: There are only three I’ll drink wine at – Olive Garden (national chain), Portobello (grill in Elk City, OK) and the local Italian restaurant, Adamo’s. Of those three, I’ve drank wine more often at the Portobello.

Hard to say what my favorite restaurant to drink wine because I usually drink beer when I am out to drink.

I would say Proof in DC is up there for wine, they have the enomatic pouring system which is kind of cool to see.

QOTD: Incredible timing for this question. I just saved an article about a NY Italian restaurant that serves 50 wines by the glass: Barcibo Enoteca. As it’s very near Lincoln Center, my friend and I are going to try it for our next Metropolitan Opera event in April.
In Albuquerque, one of our favorite restaurants, Vernon’s, has a liquor store attached and lets you bring in a purchased bottle for a $15.00 charge. This is the best deal we’ve found. We can finally get a decent wine with dinner without breaking the bank or relying on the putrid yet overpriced wine by the glass offerings at many places.

  42. December 11, 2007

    Marc

QOTD: I like making friends with the flight attendants on long-haul flights. They usually bring the good stuff from first class back to my lowly economy seat. Otherwise, I rarely buy wine by the glass at most restaurants because it’s been open for a week and isn’t worth the price.

  43. December 11, 2007

    Kirk

QOTD: I would have to say my favorite restaurant would have to be 58 degrees in Sacramento. I went there in the summer of 2002 and had a wonderful time with their selections by the taste, glass, and bottle. I look forward to another night there in the near future….

  44. December 11, 2007

    spyder47

Thanks for the road show. I like places that have a decent selection of wines by the glass, but generally these are the higher price-point restaurants. Otherwise it’s the $5 “house red”.

Great little comedy bit at the end too … I’m ROFL! Good job Mark E.

  45. December 11, 2007

QOTD: Are you kidding me! I live in Wisconsin, I’m not as spoiled as you New Yorkers are. The only restaurants we have are places like “Applebees”, “TGI Fridays”, and other lame places with bad food and lousy selections.

Il Chianti Ristorante, Saratoga Springs. Come in August , watch some famulous horse racing but leave after the 8th race so you can get a table at this fabulous restaurant, whose chef and also its owner were born and raised in Italy.

I just fell off my chair laughing at that last clip!!!

My favorite wine bar would be L’Ombretta. A nice Italian wine bar on the west coast.

    Nice show Gary.

You left Andre hanging with the handshake there. You need to tighten up the third component of the handshake. Ask some guys around the store…they’ll tell you. (And probably chuckle that I pointed this out.) You at least came correct with the knuckle mash at the end.

I always find wine pricing very interesting. $15 a glass when the bottle costs $25–likely $15 wholesale. Figuring that you get 4 glasses per bottle, we’re talking $60 for a $25 bottle. Yet another reason I love Wine Library, and why I am often reluctant to order wine when dining out. The more I buy, the hard it its to accept the 300-400% markup.

Nevertheless, your visit to Shellys was a flashback for me. I went there a few times when I worked/lived in New York.

QOTD: In DC, maybe CityZen or the Blue Duck Tavern. I had a great wine and food experience at Farallon in San Francisco.

    Thanks for the show!

QOTD: I work right next to Morrell Wine Bar. It’s located in Rockefeller Center and has a great wine by the glass list. Ask for Will behind the bar. He’s very friendly and knowledgeable. They have by the glass some higher end wines (2003 Pontet Canet) as well as some fantastic yet more obscure wines from the Loire Valley and lesser known regions of Italy. It has been a great source of my wine education.

WLTV-On-Location: Informative episode, and it’s fun to see guests and a different setting. Good stuff.

QOTD: Hmm… Sometimes I like to drink wine at a restaurant because that restaurant serves amazing food. Other times, it’s because I simply enjoy the ambiance—the restaurant is just a great cozy comfy place to sip a while. I’m not into the habit of choosing restaurants solely for their wine lists, and I don’t have a favorite wine bar.

No matter what restaurant I’m at, if something enjoyable catches my eye when I glance over the wine menu, and the place has a great atmosphere, and I’m with good company, and the food is tasty, then I’m a happy lady.

Panned vintages: I’ve been experimenting with this off & on for a while. I love to spend significantly less money than I would for a raved-about vintage, plus these are wines I can drink now or soon. Sure, sometimes I bring home a bottle of not-so-good wine, but when I open a good or great wine wearing a “bad” year on its label, I get stupidhappy.

    End clip: Hilarious.

  76. December 11, 2007

Interesting episode. We don’t get out much.

QOTD: As I said, “We don’t get out much.” However, we have had wine at Java Monkey Coffee and Wine Bar (we were there because Carl’s band had a gig there). We need to get out more.

Nice episode, I just enjoy learning all I can about the many aspects of wine. Had no idea that 2002 was a supposedly bad year for wine from Italy.

Interesting theme but with all the noise as though you were in a kitchen tasting 80+ rated wines at $14-$19 a glass was not one of your better efforts. Did he say that he charges $30 a glass but wouldn’t make any money? He’s kidding right? Only in NY. :(

QOTD: Elizabeth’s Cafe and Winery in Duck, NC (Hands down the best wine restaurant I visit each and every year)

Great location show! MORE! MORE! MORE! Now that the money’s rolling in, spend a little extra for a wireless mic on Mack. And we’re sure Mott can splice in an orientation shot with you outside the digs (maybe even a Google Earth kmz link).

QOTD: any restaurant where kids aren’t allowed.

Very enjoyable episode. QOTD: We rarely eat out, but we do enjoy the food at Becco’s, paired with the selections on the $25 wine list; they’re excellent values and we’ve always enjoyed the staff’s suggestions.

I really enjoy having wines by the glass at Salute in Midtown Manhattan

Good Italian food and some interesting Italian reds by the glass.

  98. December 11, 2007

    Palmer

QOTD: I’ve had my best luck by the glass at Dominick’s on Beverly Blvd in L.A./W. Hollywood. A great variety of Italian wines by the glass that have all been pretty good.

  99. December 11, 2007

    Social Project Brian

Great episode, Gary. Too bad though that Andre didn’t put up more powerful wines. But I guess the point wasn’t to show off great bottles. Every sommelier can brag about certain bottles. You were getting a man-on-the-street view. That was cool.

QOTD: Best restaurant to drink wine? It so depends on the mood and the company. I’m in SoCal, so I’ve enjoyed the Los Olivos Cafe (yes, the Sideways restaurant), Mastro’s Steakhouse, AOC Wine Bar, and beyond that, it just depends on good stemware, proper serving temperature, an interesting selection of wines by the glass, and a lucky food-wine pairing.

Really neat episode………….Looking forward to more of the same.

Also, whatever happened to the follow-on Sherry episode??

QOTD: Danial’s was my favorite, but sadly they are no more. At present, I really don’t have a favorite as most of the local restaurants we go to just have the run of the mill stuff………nothing really different.

  101. December 11, 2007

    jbailey

We have a new wine bar/retail place in Austin called “Fion” which is great! You can pick a bottle off the shelf and taste by the glass, you just need to buy 2 glasses. You can move onto another bottle if you choose, or purchase the bottle with a nominal corkage fee. Great concept and it really seems to be taking off. The staff is very knowledgeable and the atmosphere is very “Texas” casual. We love it.

    That’s funny.
And I admit it. I’m too cheap…correction…WAY TOO CHEAP to pay the markup restaurants ask on their wine. I am NOT their target market. And call me crazy, but I’d rather blow $100 getting a $90 bottle, and $10 of food cost at home than getting an okay meal and a $25 bottle [marked up out the $@$] at a restaurant.

qotd: no restaurant in particular. honestly, most restaurants with bottles in my budget end up offering boring wines, and the restaurants with the good wines want way more than i’m willing to spend. nothing like being able to get a bottle of $8 cotes du rhone for $32 to make you ask for a beer.

but really, for $100 i can have a few friend over on a friday night, crack a few nice bottles and make a really good dinner. thus i do most of my wine lovin’ at home, with friends and family, and i’m perfectly content to keep it that way.

cool episode, and it seems like andre has a good thing going, and is playing with some interesting wines. cheers! also, gv, you’re on a roll with these good episodes lately, man. thanks a bunch

QOTD: I must admit that I have been studying the wine lists at my favorite eateries, and since I am still developing my palate, I was relying heavily on the scores of the wines. Gary, thank you for the show. I was able to take clients out tonight to a French restaurant, and for the first time, not be intimidated by the choices… had a 2002 Domaine Nizas Cotes Du Languedoc, excellent QPR because you said excellent values were to be had from the south of Fance. There was a good flow in this installment of WLTV and its nice to see you changing the wine world at nice NYC restaurants. You are so lucky to be able to choose from so many fine establishments. The rule for the price of a glass is one half the price of the cost of the bottle. So if the bottle is $20 then the glass should be $10. This works as long as the bottle is consumed or three glasses at least are served. These are general guidelines and are at the whim of the proprietor. It did not make sense to me that these wines were chosen as aperitifs. If these were meant as a preview to what you could pair with the seafood menu then I might agree. The traditional pairing with fish is a high acidity wine because it cut the fish oils cleanly and enhances the flavor. Pinot Noir from Oregon is a natural pairing with wild salmon. I was surprised to see Nebbiolo as a fish wine but I could drink a good Barolo by itself or with chocolate or Parmesan cheese or just some good bread…..We used to serve a Dover Sole au Chambertin as a special which had the delicate meat of the flounder tinged purple from the Pinot Noir sauce. Coq au Vin is a chicken in red wine production. Some chefs will drink their favorite Bordeaux with everthing so again it’s your call and rules are meant to be broken. With fish I still like Meursault…

QOTD There is a little tapas restaurant in Frederick, MD called Isabellas that will pour just about anything on their list by the glass and you can graze on the tapas until you are satiated…
Thanks for listing one of my all time favorite wines Muga as the wine of the year.

In any case, QOTD: This is a tough one, because I enjoy tasting wine at home with friends, but in terms of dining out, I enjoy a place in Breckenridge, CO that features wine as an event, and works in appetizers around the wine. It’s called The Cellar (go figure…).

Very enjoyable episode! And great post-episode!!

QOTD: Actually, let me turn the question around; restaurant not to go to. My daughter and son-in-law in Vancouver only have wine in a restaurant on their anniversary, and always at The Keg. But this year they were hit by sticker shock when the house red went from $5.50 to $8 a glass. Of course, they have no idea what the wine was.

In the Okanagan, our favourite is The Minstrel Cafe, with great and varied menus and reasonably priced wine. Looking forward to an occasion to visit La Bussola for a nice risotto and a half-bottle of Amorone that I wouldn’t otherwise get to taste.

Yea, I really liked this episode. I got interested in the whole wine scene when I started to work at a restaurant (3 months ago) so I really enjoy seeing/hearing the thought process behind the different wine selections/programs people have come up with.

QoTD: Before I started working in a restaurant (and my subsequent plunge into the wine world) I wouldn’t ever order wine by the glass because I knew little of it, and what I did know was cheap, blah wine. And now that I’ve learned enough to be able to navigate through a wine list/make selections I’d enjoy, I don’t have the free time to actually go to a restaurant and be on the other side of the table. Some night in January I’ll be sure to go and treat myself to some fine wine and food.

Looking forward to the rest of the week.

QOTD – There is a little bistro in Redmond WA called Pomegranate that is a great place to drink wine. They don’t have much of a by the glass selection, but the markup for bottles seems to be about $5-10 over retail. Best prices I have seen on a wine list prety much anywhere. Plus, the food is spectacular.

lol, that guy at the end had me! I was thinking… “what an idiot… he’s talking about how expensive this wine is, and he pours the whole damn thing in the glass to ‘rinse’ it!”. Nice work man.

Hey Gary, there’s this great wine here in Oregon from a Vinyard on the Columbia Gorge that is great. They don’t sell it outside of Oregon and Washington because it isn’t a huge batch. Anyhow, I’ll have to see if I can get some and send you a bottle to review.

    Cheers,

    Trevor

After 368 episodes you still keep the show fresh! THanks.
QOTD: I usually bring my own bottle, but I would have to sadly name a chain and say Flemings steakhouse. 100 wines by the glass including some sparkling wines and the full wine list is available online, which I really wish more places offered.

Well, I didn’t really get into wine until I had moved overseas, so I don’t know many American restaurants where I’d like to drink wine. Plus, I’m from small-town Oklahoma so I don’t think there are many in my neighborhood. However, I do know Mercy Wine Bar in Dallas is kind of cool. They’ve got a neat ambiance, wine available by flights for tasting, and pastas and nibbling-type food. I had a nice time there. But there was also a wine bar/restaurant in Paris I love called Le Vin Qui Danse, where I sampled a lot of good French wines by the glass and had some awesome tuna and salmon tartare.

great show gary, many of your medical viewers (traditionally some of the biggest wine nuts going) will have smiled at your inadvertent “back to back nebs” joke – “nurse give this asthmatic back to back nebs!” “will the 2002 do doctor?”

QOTD Andrew Edmunds in Soho London – great and varying selection at almost cost price including half bottles – excellent for trying a bigger variety of wines during a meal. And of course the legendary Arches Wine Bar in Swiss Cottage.

Questions related to this episode – vacuum sealing and wine by the glass effective? Especially with larger selections and hence slower turnover especially at the top end. What about these closed systems that allow a vast array of fine wine by the glass – Wonder Bar at Selfridges serves Chateaux Petrus by the glass! Good or Gimmick?

It was very interesting to see another wine professional’s technique – the sniff, the taste, how he aerates the wine and chews it rather than doing the GV “bird sounds” and his spitting form.

QOTD: Can’t afford restaurants, but there’s a great BYO place nearbye: the Blue Point Grill, that has great seafood. Best meal: Small Gully The Formula ‘03 with mussels in white wine sauce and a tuna steak. Wine glasses are terrible, though. Next time I’m bringing my own.

    Nice episode :)

QOTD: Sportsman’s. It’s a great wine shop and restaurant here in AZ. They have awesome salads and sandwiches, and a lovely selection of wines by the glass, of course there’s also the option of pulling a bottle out of the store and having them pop it right there for you to drink.

QOTD: I gotta go with my current place of work: TASCA WINE BAR in Los Angeles. Fantastic by-the-glass selection (including 3-4 additional daily specials), decent bottle selection, and great old-world comfort food presented in both small and large plates. For anyone in the LA area: stop in, say hello to Dave (me), and enjoy some good wine and good food.

QotD: Posted this on the forums. My favorite currently is a local restaurant called Prime 15 in Ringwood, NJ. The food is only so-so [steak house, steak is okay, ribs are good, everything else is meh], and the service stinks [but no OMG we're leaving bad]… but the wine list is surprisingly decent and VERY reasonably priced, in some cases below market.

great episode. there’s a great new place in New Brunswick with a fabulous wine list & tapas menu – Daryl Wine Bar (www.darylwinebar.com). they do 2, 4, and 6 ounce glasses of wine, and if you really like something they also have a shop attached and you can buy the bottles at retail price. awesome.

QOTD: Unless it’s a special occasion I usually don’t order wine at restaurants (mainly because I know how ridiculous the markup is). But I have enjoyed the wine list at The Grape in Dallas on more than one occasion, so due to my limited experiences I will say that one.

  220. December 12, 2007

    Mott T Hoople

Del Posto has what I consider a great deal (for upscale/NYC/celebrity chef) – eat a 4-course dinner at the “enoteca” (bar), and for $19 you get a wine pairing with each course. The wine is all Italian, and perfect with the food.

GV, really interesting show to see what places are serving up and pricing at in NYC. Gives me good comparison to the market here in NC.

QOTD: My favorate place to sip/consume great, and fairly priced wine is a place called Enoteca Vin, downtown Raleigh NC. They offer a variety of wines by the glass at 1oz, 3oz, 5oz (or bottle) servings and are fairly priced. The place also serves up great food. Worth seeking out if you every make down here.

Here is their web site if you care to review the wine list and pricing

I live in Virginia Beach so we only have two wine bars in the area, Fire and Vine, so-so flights of wines and the WineHouse in Norfolk, interesting wines with big pours but mediocre food. No wine bars in Santa Fe where I go frequently and this is a big disappointment in a town that has such great food. In fact, few places outside of Casa Sena even have wine flights.

  236. December 12, 2007

    Dave

Interesting episode. Gary you need to get out a bit further than NYC, although as someone else commented it does provide a good price comparison, not that Little Rock AR has much choice because of the draconian alcohol laws in this state.
QOTD: Can’t answer that ’till I get home to the Barolo area and then the list is too long, not to mention I’m still discovering all the great little trattoria’s.

Best place for wine by the glass…. Repast in Atlanta! Incredible place to eat and drink.

Sella & Mosca, cannonau riserva, sardegna 03 for 12 bucks a glass, bargain any day in any city!

Perfectly selected wines but the real trick, no corkage fee on the first bottle as long as you share a glass with the chef. This guarantees the chef comes to your table and you get to meet them. Others in the restaurant will wonder who you are to rate such a greeting.

Love this place. If in Atlanta make it a must visit!

  238. December 12, 2007

    GalvezGuy

Another great show. QOTD: For me, it is Fleming’s, you can find them in most big cities and they usually have a great by the glass selection, especially big reds that pair well with a tasty piece of cow. Also a local Italian place here serves a wonderful Chianti by the glass for about $4. Definitely not that straw basket crap and a step up from Ruffino and DaVinci.

GVNC, love that you’re getting out and experiencing the non-virtual world! Nice show. “Back to back Nebs,” what the hell is that?

QOTD: Favorite restaurant to drink wine in…I’m going to have to go with two, one west coast and one east coast. On the westside it would be the Waterfront Seafood Grill; amazing wine list, fantastic food, and great atmosphere. On the eastside it would be Park & Orchard in East Rutherford, just up the road from the Wine Library. It’s like eating in a roadside diner but with one of the biggest wine lists I’ve ever seen.

QOTD-I can’t say there’s a place I like to have wine by the glass; I can’t get over the price difference compared to getting a bottle outside the restaurant. I’ll have a glass or two because I like to try different wines…and come on…I can’t NOT have a glass of wine!

QOTD: I just started going to a wine bar not too long ago. It’s called Max’s Wine Dive and is located in Houston, TX at Washington and Shepherd. It is very nice and they have a very extensive selection. It is a bit pricey so I only go once or twice a month, but it’s worth it.

QOTD – I don’t really drink wine at restaurants. It’s too damn expensive. I don’t understand why i’d pay $9+ a glass when in some cases you could buy the bottle for the same price at the store.

There’s a French creperie / bistro / bar around the corner from me (in Seattle) that has a solid and affordable French wine selection. It’s called 611 Supreme, and I love the white burgandy they offer by the pichet. Speaking of pichets, Le Pichet (a more authentic French bistro that does its own chacuterie) has great wines. They had an awesomely fun Beaujolais Nouveau party, and I really liked one of their by-the-glass selections, even though I’m not a huge fan of beaujolais nouveau. More and more, though, my friends and I end of bringing our own wine to restaurants and paying corking fees.

    Nice Ep GV,
    Wines without oak with fish?
I gotta admit for me it makes a big difference what kinda fish and what kinda wine. For whites with a substantial oily fish (like a tuna steak, chunka grouper or salmon), a well oaked chardonnay matches well. For most other fish I would agree a less oaked wine, white or red, is better.
QOTD: I haven’t found one yet. Unfortunately I live in one of the myriad bedroom communities within commuting distance of Washington DC and most of them don’t understand the concept of a good winelist or corkage fee.

QOTD. Some of my most transcendent wine experiences have been in restaurants. However, in Chicago, restaurant prices for wine tend to start at about 3 times the retail price (not wholesale price) and go up from there. Food without wine is a sad thing. Feeling ripped off is a sad thing. So I don’t go to restaurants often.

If restaurants in this country charged more reasonable prices for wine, people would go out more, order more wine (and food), become more comfortable with the idea of wine as just the drink you have with dinner (as opposed to the stuff you have only on special occasions), and it would really change the wine world. How do we make that happen?

Sure, there are plenty of arguments for why restaurants have to charge more for wine than retailers do, but come on, retailers have to make a profit, too. Those arguments do not account for the magnitude of the price difference.

    QotD.(As promised).

-Trois in Atlanta. Why? Because I normally do not buy wine when I go out. On a college budget, I’m sticking with water most of the time. HOWEVER, when i do go to a nice restaurant, and decide to fork over some cheddar (normally on a date with the girlfriend), I almost always trust the server/smoliers recommendations after we have placed our meal orders. The best so far? Trois.

My fave place to drink wine is a wonderful wine bar called D’Vine in Mesa, AZ, which brings all kinds of little-known wines to the table in flights so we can sample and enjoy something other than the standard big hitters. I discovered Four Vines Zins and Jeff Runquists Zins there. Can you tell I like Zinfandels?

QOTD: Sticking with the Cleveland value, we have a number of restaurants here with GREAT wine lists such as Swingo’s on the Lake, Giovanni’s, and The Vue. An excellent Italian restaurant that has a nice Italian wine list at tremendous value is Lago in the Tremont section of Cleveland.

OK. That should have read, “Cleveland, OH and NOT NYC”. Doh! :-)

I lived in Winston-Salem, NC for six years before I moved back to the northeast. My wife and I used to eat at a restaurant called the Zeveley House. We got to know the owner and chef pretty well. Their basic wine list was OK. However, they had a reserve list that was pretty good and a cellar that had some gems in it.

They used to let me go down into the cellar, pick a bottle that I wanted with our meal and then drink away. I had picked a 1988 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe a couple of years ago along with a 1988 Leonetti Cabernet from WA.

Liked the concept for this episode and am looking forward to the next few like it. QOTD: I dont drink out too often, as the price is obviously inflated. I usually enjoy a good dessert wine after my meal, and the place where I have enjoyed wine the most is again Cafe Juanita. Just all around flawless and never any complaints of any kind.
