Qotd: Antrim's 1844, over 2,300 selections and I'm surprised at how low their mark ups are for a restaurant

Good show Gary! Thanks for continuing to help expand our wine world.
QOTD:We have a pretty good wine selection for drinking at home. Usually when we dine out my wife and I eat at BYOB’s so the wine choices are ours. Otherwise at restaurants serving wine we go with the food pairing recommendations.

  • QOTD – I don’t really drink wine at restaurants. It’s too damn expensive. I don’t understand why i’d pay $9+ a glass when in some cases you could buy the bottle for the same price at the store.

There’s a French creperie / bistro / bar around the corner from me (in Seattle) that has a solid and affordable French wine selection. It’s called 611 Supreme, and I love the white burgandy they offer by the pichet. Speaking of pichets, Le Pichet (a more authentic French bistro that does its own chacuterie) has great wines. They had an awesomely fun Beaujolais Nouveau party, and I really liked one of their by-the-glass selections, even though I’m not a huge fan of beaujolais nouveau. More and more, though, my friends and I end of bringing our own wine to restaurants and paying corking fees.

    Nice Ep GV,
    Wines without oak with fish?
I gotta admit for me it makes a big difference what kinda fish and what kinda wine. For whites with a substantial oily fish (like a tuna steak, chunka grouper or salmon), a well oaked chardonnay matches well. For most other fish I would agree a less oaked wine, white or red, is better.
QOTD: I haven’t found one yet. Unfortunately I live in one of the myriad bedroom communities within commuting distance of Washington DC and most of them don’t understand the concept of a good winelist or corkage fee.

QOTD: Don’t have a favorite restaurant for wine. As long as the company is great the wine always tastes better.

    Great ending!

QOTD. Some of my most transcendent wine experiences have been in restaurants. However, in Chicago, restaurant prices for wine tend to start at about 3 times the retail price (not wholesale price) and go up from there. Food without wine is a sad thing. Feeling ripped off is a sad thing. So I don’t go to restaurants often.

If restaurants in this country charged more reasonable prices for wine, people would go out more, order more wine (and food), become more comfortable with the idea of wine as just the drink you have with dinner (as opposed to the stuff you have only on special occasions), and it would really change the wine world. How do we make that happen?

Sure, there are plenty of arguments for why restaurants have to charge more for wine than retailers do, but come on, retailers have to make a profit, too. Those arguments do not account for the magnitude of the price difference.

  • QOTD: I don’t have a favorite restaurant to drink wine, since I had my daughter, I hardly go out anymore…LOL. Plus, the less I spend on food, the more I can spend at my local wine shop!!!

Yeah, Mark E! Nice ‘epilogue’ episode! QOTD: I almost never eat at restaurants. And if I do, I don’t drink wine – not at THEIR prices. I’ll eat, and then go home and drink a bottle of my own later, at a reasonable price.

  • I had a good Rueda at a seafood restaurant recently – Bodegas Naia Las Brisas 2006. Generally when I eat at restaurants, which isn’t often, I will try a wine that is new to me, when they have it.

QOTD: “Purple Wine Bar and Cafe” in Kirkland, Washington (also Woodinville and Seattle). Huge reasonably-priced by-the-glass wine list and great food. Their wine & cheese flights are fantastic.

    QotD.(As promised).

-Trois in Atlanta. Why? Because I normally do not buy wine when I go out. On a college budget, I’m sticking with water most of the time. HOWEVER, when i do go to a nice restaurant, and decide to fork over some cheddar (normally on a date with the girlfriend), I almost always trust the server/smoliers recommendations after we have placed our meal orders. The best so far? Trois.

Barberesco with fish?! Are you f@$#*ng kidding me? I don’t care how acidic it is, those tannins would freaking kill your palette.
